THE EDITORʼS LETTER

T

he Emirates Woman team has had a busy few weeks, both on the ground in the UAE and abroad. It kicked off with my trip to Paris with Hermès to discover the latest perfume from the famed French fashion house. Then, the face of Nina Ricci’s newest fragrance, Florrie Arnold, flew into town. Naturally, we had to snap her up for a fashion shoot, and you can see the stylish results on page 84. Back in Dubai for what seemed like a split-second, I was quickly back on a jet plane, this time heading to Munich and on to Hamburg to board a cruise ship with Nivea to celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Once all aboard, the festivities started with a private show from the beauty brand’s newest ‘face’, Rihanna. Next to jet off was our favourite on-line editor, Primrose Skelton, from LOVESTYLE.com, who got up close and personal with the fashion in Brazil, while our very own Cherith Nicholl spent a week soaking up the glamorous atmosphere in Barcelona and Madrid. he month of June, in my book, officially means summer. Hello, hot weather wardrobe… and goodbye swimsuit avoidance. Oh dear... How did the ‘official summer’ get here so quickly? It just sneaks up on you, like the stealth ‘season’ in a sunshine climate. I know, I know – it’s another classic ex-pat moan; the weather here is just too perfect, too much of the time. People living in locations where all four seasons actually exist are preparing the violins accordingly. But hear me out – for many women, living in the UAE means sacrificing the little-appreciated luxury of cool, springtime preparation months when layers disguise a ‘work-inprogress’ body. Here, all of a sudden, it’s summer and the clothes we’re wearing haven’t really changed since December. The drum roll of panic towards a grand summer holiday ‘unveiling’ is lost, and it’s just not fair. Well, that’s one excuse anyway. However, I’m not really one for excuses, as this column clearly demonstrates. But this year I fear the sand timer really has run out, and the only possible solution is to investigate how one cuts corners in time (cough, and effort) when it comes to looking half-decent come beach o’clock. It’s far too late in the day to assume that the gym will fix it. I’ve explored that avenue before, getting overly excited about my new kit by Stella McCartney for Adidas – which is lovely by the way (check out the collection at www.stellamccartney.com). I even contemplated copy-catting a friend who bought cycling shorts with a padded bottom for spinning class (that’s right, think derrière à la Kim Kardashian; it’s ‘professional’, you know) but it seemed concentrating on the overall look pre, rather than post, work-out isn’t the key. I also realised that I do not enjoy the prospect of public exercise. For

those of you who feel the same, take a look at the reigning DVD exercise queen at www. tracyandersonmethod.com. Much less hassle, and something you can return to in the privacy of your living room, thus eradicating outfit panic. With the above in mind, you can imagine my delight to discover that there are some understanding beauty brands out there. Clarins recently launched its Extra-Firming Body Cream (Dhs254). Not just firming, extra-firming. It’s a luxuriously rich, thick whipped cream emulsion to rub into those wobbly bits, diminishing any signs of dry skin (another no-no when contemplating beachwear), and with regular application skin elasticity really does perk up, not to mention looking constantly luminous. More help from the French comes in the form of L’Occitane’s Amande collection, a deliciously

scented, almond-based range that includes Gel Corbes Exquises (Delightful Shape Gel, Dhs180) and Brume Jambes Legres, (Elegant Legs Spray, Dhs80). With names like this you’d be mad not to give it a try, and the meltingly fresh gel in particular leaves you feeling firmer pretty much instantly. Okay, it may look a little like baby food, but keep with it and successful body contouring’s coming right up. Who needs boring old exercise? Unfortunately, in reality, everyone does. And lots of water, of course: the regular ‘dos and don’ts’. Just enough to get the blood flowing and keep skin hydrated, mind you. As they say, the only way to see results is to select a routine (French beauty products included) with a big dollop of perseverance. I suppose that’s my problem; I’ll try anything, once. ■ JUNE 2011

disappearing act from the red carpet spells one of two things in Hollywood – a career that’s flatlining, or… a pregnancy. For Penelope Cruz, it could only have been the latter. But the 36-year-old beauty – and now mother of one – is back, making quite the red-carpet return promoting her latest movie, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. As bloggers’ hovered feverishly over keyboards and the paparazzi trained their lenses to catch a glimpse of Penelope’s first post-pregnancy outing since Leo’s birth in January, her reappearance certainly caused ripples – of the good kind. The 64th Cannes Film Festival last month saw Penelope dazzle in a tulle Marchesa dress twinkling with thousands of sparkling beads, while the German premiere in Munich saw ‘the lady in red’ step out in a flawless, floor-length Giorgio Armani Privé gown looking regal, elegant and the picture of health. If you’re going to make a return to the red carpet, this is how you do it. With all eyes on her post-baby figure, she was, to the gall of any Hollywood-haters out there, perfect. Not a hair out of place and not an inch of baby fat on show – the Spanish beauty’s got her groove, and body, back and is as voluptuous and fiercely feminine as ever. But as the gossip-hungry gawp in jealousy, all she wants to do is talk babies. “He is beautiful, absolutely beautiful,” she says of her son, Leo. “My life is completely different now – more settled and just complete.” Of course, she shares her ‘complete’ life with another Hispanic Hollywood heavyweight, Javier Bardem – her husband of a year. As for the adjustments that come with motherhood? “Nothing that isn’t wonderful and good. Bar the sleeping!” In her first big interview as a mother with US Vogue last month, she spoke of her the new love of life: “From the first second, you feel so much love. It is a revolutionary experience. That’s the best way I can describe it. Nature is very wise and it gives you nine months to prepare, but when you see that face, it transforms you completely, in a second, forever.” But it’s not just Penelope who’s been transformed,

Javier’s acceptance speech at February’s Goya Awards was even more melt-your-heart, announcing: “I dedicate this award to my wife and son for awakening my heart and smile every day.” With a new movie, and two beautiful men in her life, things are good – very good. But at 36, it’s been a long road to contentment. Born in Madrid in 1974, her happy childhood was spent curled up in a corner of her mother’s hair salon. With her nose in her books, her eyes and ears were trained far more acutely on the conversations and secrets her mother’s clientele divulged. “I always looked at that place like my first acting school, because I really saw what those women were looking for,” she laughs. “They walked in feeling one way and left feeling more confident. Sometimes it was like a therapy session for them. As for me, I pretended I was doing homework, but really I was observing – I was fascinated. It was beautiful to see them look in the mirror and feel good about themselves. It’s an act that means something – to take care of yourself and to feel comfortable in your own skin is very beautiful.” However, despite her early beauty education, it was the world of ballet, and then movies, that won her affections. “At first I wanted to be a dancer and grew up as a ballet student, but then, as I got older, I became fond of movies. My dad bought me a Betamax video player and I devoured movies. If I liked one I’d watch it 20 times in a row!” The rest is history… “I’ve acted ever since!” Penelope landed a spot on a Spanish TV series at just 14, and, with the training wheels well and truly off, found herself an agent and put herself through theatre school. She didn’t have to wait long for the big league offers to role in. “When I started to get parts, I thought to myself, ‘maybe this can work for me,’ and it’s continued until now.” Skip forward nearly 20 years and her CV is weighed down by 50 movies. Not quite a Hollywood veteran, but she’s certainly on her way. Her early career produced Jamon, Jamon in 1992. Not only did this initiate the first meeting of Penelope and Javier (who would, almost 16 years later, become her husband), but the movie – and her acting – caught a certain influential film director’s attention. Pedro Almodóvar, the king of Spanish film, had found his new muse – while Penelope found an idol, mentor and life-long confidante. In 1997, he cast her in Live Flesh (with Javier in the lead role), and after his 1999 film All About My Mother, the world sat up a little straighter in their cinema seats and Hollywood batted its eyelashes enticingly. A string of high-hitters followed… All The Pretty Horses,

Through a reputation for ambition, professionalism and passion, Penelope’s firmly ensconced herself in the camp of A-listers who directors vie to cast and who can cherry-pick their roles. “I don’t want to play myself or the same character twice. When I have this feeling of ‘I need to do this, I want to experience and understand this character’, then I take it as a sign.” The most recent ‘sign’, it seems, gently pushed her in the direction of a swashbuckling pirate movie. Step forward Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Playing Angelica, the love interest of Johnny Depp’s comedic, yet slightly deranged, Captain Jack Sparrow came quite naturally to the self-confessed ‘flirt’. “We worked together 10 years ago on Blow and we had a great experience,” she reminisces. “He’s one of the kindest and most genuine people I know. People don’t realise how funny or smart he is – the set is always a lively place when he’s there. I only have good things to say about him.” The pirate master is only too keen to bat the compliment right back: “A lot of things can be said about this creature Penelope Cruz – none of them bad.” Despite her baby bump, Penelope was committed to her role – sword fights and all. “We trained hard and had a lot of preparation. Everything was safe and they were really protective and patient, thankfully!” Now in its fourth instalment, Pirates is clearly a moneyspinner for Universal Studios, while adding Cruz to the credits will only be a bonus for the film’s bankability. It may not be an Oscarworthy role, but hey, she’s got one already and let’s face it – how many gold statues does one girl need? “Of course!” she laughs when we suggest that Javier and her keep their Oscars together. “It’s funny though, because I keep my Oscar in Spain as that’s our main home and where our family is. And when I’m there, it comes to the beach with me. I’m not joking – I wrap it up in a towel and it sits next to me on the sand!” Speaking of her Latin roots, Penelope – along with the likes of Eva Mendes, Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba – is proud to be flying the Latina flag in Hollywood – something that’s important for the actress who “loves her language” and vows she’s “always a Spanish actress at heart”. Her rich, creamy accent aside, Penelope’s dark, mysterious looks have drawn comparison to some of the industry’s greats… including Audrey Hepburn. “I have heard that before,” she laughs. “I’ve never modelled myself on her, but I have always admired her – she was a great actress and very unique.” And where does she stand on being a role model? “I don’t really see myself like that. I am not somebody who likes to give much advice, unless it’s to my close friends or family. But it’s a responsibility, nonetheless.” Away from the silver screen, Penelope professes to be one of ‘those’ women who can maintain a svelte silhouette sans diet. She says: “I don’t do any strange diets, as my Mediterranean diet is healthy enough. But a good husband and happiness helps!” A regular on the beauty circuit, she is also the new ambassador for Lancôme – a role she’s particularly proud of. “I’ve been a fan of Lancôme since I was a little girl and saw Isabella Rossellini in her Trésor ads. I’m a very visual person,” she explains, “and I’ve always been amazed by the feeling you can get from an image – how it can take you to another world. It’s magical.” Shooting with Mario Testino was also an enormous reward. “It was actually the first time we worked together and we connected as if we had been working together for 20 years. I hope we were able to create that Lancôme magic, because the brand is like a homage to all women, and it has a lot of care and respect for us.” For a woman who admits to not being “great at her own makeup”, her beauty box isn’t shy of a purchase or two. “I love Lancôme’s L’Absolu Rouge lipstick and I’ve worn Trésor and Pôeme perfumes JUNE 2011

for years. I definitely have too many products,” she confesses. “The problem is airports. You spend so much time there that you can’t help but pick up something at duty free. One more cream, one more something…” With or without make-up, she refuses to let the paparazzi intrude in her life. “I just avoid the places that call for that type of attention. I prefer quiet places.” Preparing for her biggest (yet not necessarily quietest) role yet as a mother, she promises to fight for her son’s anonymity even more fervently than she does her own. As for work, once the promotion for Pirates is over, it’s baby first, movie sets second. “I will work again, of course; we all need to work! There’s so much more I want to do. But it’s very important to have time with my family,” she says protectively.

What’s next for the woman who finally has it all? “Well, motherhood has changed me. After years of being a workaholic and always being tired, I changed rhythm and found a happier equilibrium. I will work, but for now only on one film a year.” But acting runs through Penelope’s veins, so it will never be far from her thoughts. “Acting is still like a first date to me. Every time I go to a movie set and start a project, I feel the same feeling; the butterflies in the stomach, not having control over it – because acting is like that,” she says. “That’s the beauty of it. You’re always learning and there’s always more. I refuse to get to 50 and wait at home for the phone to ring. In Spain, actresses work until they are old. That’s my plan.” As signs go, we’ll take this as ours – that although our leading lady may be taking a break, we certainly haven’t lost her for good.

DANGER A FEMALE DEMINER’S STORY IN CAMBODIA

heun Sokhon, 29, stares at the ground, surveying it slowly. In front of her in the dense Cambodian jungle lies a hidden garden of danger. Her eyes move from left to right following the head of a black metal detector over freshly cut brush. She listens intently – loss of focus could cost her life. The metal detector hums at a low pitch. If it jumps to a high frequency she must carefully mark the spot. Red signs with skull and crossbones dot the landscape, warning: “Danger! Mines!â€? Sokhon is a deminer working for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a British demining charity. She searches for landmines – facing the same threat that shattered her life at the age of 19, when she stepped on one and it exploded. She is one of the very few female amputee deminers in the world, and her courage is helping to rebuild her country. “I don’t want people to experience what I have been through,â€? she says. Born in 1982, Sokhon’s life started when civil war raged like wildďŹ re across Battambang Province, in western Cambodia. Her village was trapped between the recently ousted but still genocidal Khmer Rouge forces, and the armies of the Cambodian and Vietnamese governments. “I remember growing up, that ďŹ ghting would break out at any time,â€? she says. She recalls hiding with her mother and siblings under the family chicken cage. “But the chicken pooped on me,â€? she laughs. Her father ran and hid when Khmer Rouge soldiers entered their village. “If they caught my father and knew he was a teacher, then 62

they would kill the rest of his family. He had to quit teaching.” Sokhon was witnessing one of the last sad chapters of the revolutionary movement that devastated Cambodia. During their reign of terror from 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge unleashed one of the most brutal social, political and economic restructurings of a society ever seen. Their goal was to create a pure classless nation of farming peasants. Cambodian towns were emptied. Cambodian currency was abolished, religion banned, schools, post offices and communications were closed. Citizens were forced to march into the fields working like slaves. Anyone who resisted faced death. Contact with the outside world was cut off, and the leadership reset the calendar of Cambodian history in 1975, deeming it: Year Zero. The regime leader Pol Pot set out to cleanse all of Cambodia, first by executing anyone from the previous government, and then other Khmer Rouge leaders. His paranoia reached such a height that any Cambodian with an education could be judged a spy and executed. Neighbours were encouraged to inform on one another; children were taught to spy on their parents. Four years of terrifying misrule resulted in 1 to 2 million deaths by execution and starvation. The revolution destroyed Cambodia’s social fabric, economy and political system. And although Vietnamese forces toppled the Khmer Rouge in 1979, installing a new government, civil war continued to heap misery on the country. By 1998 that war was over. Sokhon’s youth had been spent working 16-hour days helping her mother feed nine children. Sokhon, the daughter of a schoolteacher, was illiterate. She says: “We didn’t even have enough rice to eat, so how could I go to school? Even today I can’t read or write my own name.” Her family was 64

landless – so poor they often borrowed rice from neighbours. They were reduced to scavenging for any food and work they could find. In 2002, desperation forced Sokhon, then aged 19, to make a life-altering decision. She and her mother travelled west, 75 km to O’chheukrom village, in Pailin province on the Thai-Cambodia border. She says: “Many people told me in Thailand they could earn up to three times what I made in Cambodia.” But it was a difficult decision. To secure a ceasefire Pailin province had been created as a sanctuary for Khmer Rouge leaders. In the 1990s it was covered in pristine forest, providing shelter for Khmer Rouge insurgents as Cambodian and Vietnamese forces pushed them to the fringes of the borderlands. When Sokhon arrived in 2002 the forest was gone. Khmer Rouge forces had clear-cut the trees, selling them to sustain the war, leaving a dusty landscape of scrub brush,


HMPCBM SFQPSU and low rolling hills in the shadows of the Cardamom Mountains. As the trees were removed soldiers on all sides laid an insidious barrier – the K-5 minefield – sealing off the Khmer Rouge. The K-5 minefield snakes along the entire Thai-Cambodian international border from the Gulf of Thailand to Laos. Containing up to 6 million mines, it forms one of the deadliest manmade barriers in the world, measuring 700 km long by 500 metres wide. Since 1979, mines and UXO (Unexploded ordnance) have injured or killed more than 60,000 Cambodians. When Sokhon arrived at O’Chheukrom, the Cambodian Mine Victim Information System (CMVIS) listed it one of the most high-risk villages in the country, averaging 10 accidents per year. Sokhon was aware of the danger. However, thousands of Cambodians crossed the minefields daily to work in Thailand. One February morning in 2002 Sokhon also crossed the border into Thailand. She immediately found work in an orchard clearing tree limbs. She recalls returning home, saying: “I earned 100 baht (US$2.50). My mom decided to come the next day. We were so happy!” Then on the second day, she went to collect some water pipes when it happened. “There was a huge explosion. The next second I was sitting down covered in smoke. I noticed one of my legs had gone. The other one was bleeding everywhere. I couldn’t feel anything – but I screamed.” When her mother arrived she fainted. “At first I didn’t want to live,” Sokhon admits. No longer able to help her family, she felt hopeless and asked her fiancé to call off their wedding – but he stood by her. Convinced it was true love she married

him at a small ceremony in 2003. Shortly after she left for two months of rehabilitation at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) centre in Battambang city. When she arrived ICRC staff took photo #8967 for their records. In it, Sokhon looks devastated, scared and alone. It is the oldest picture she has of herself, because as she admits: “I destroyed all my childhood photos. I didn’t want to remember how I was.” She adds that: “Losing a leg by an explosion is more painful than giving a birth to a child – both physically and emotionally.” At the centre, ICRC Supervisor Lim Horsan recalls thousand of amputee cases, saying: “They are regarded negatively by society as Chon Pika, meaning ‘broken person’. But here we refer to them as sister or brother.” He estimates 80 to 90 percent have suicidal thoughts at first. They think their life is meaningless; a burden to their family. “They know they will be discriminated against by the community. For women becoming an amputee is more difficult – they think they lose their beauty.” During Sokhon’s absence in rehab her mother-in-law arranged for her husband to marry another woman. Sokhon remembers returning to O’Chheukrom, saying: “I let him go. This was not only his mother’s desire, but all his relatives and now he himself. This was what they wanted to do. He had come to ask for a divorce two or three times.” She was heartbroken – and two months pregnant with his child. Sokhon resolved to support herself, a huge task in a village with no electricity or running water. She recalls being nine months pregnant. “The riverbank was steep and slippery. The water was too

classmates looked down on her. She wanted to give up, but says; “I tried heavy to carry – I dropped it,” she says. “I saw some women who very hard to remember everything. After a while I could remember were pregnant, but their husbands stood by and helped them with better than the others.” To everyone’s surprise she finished second out of heavy work.” She pushed herself again, knowing she needed water to 50 in her class. During graduation her instructor noted her intelligence cook food. The strain induced Sokon into labour. “I sat down and before the entire group. a minefield 20 km from O’Chheukrom. Eight male co-workers follow behind. Three are amputees and also limp. Wearing body armour, blast visors and carrying hundreds of pounds of demining equipment they step into the minefield. In searing heat Sokhon begins hiking up and down the hill, removing heavy piles of brush. She takes great care not to step over a thin red line marking the minefield boundary. She says the experience requires total clarity of mind. “I have to concentrate only on the sound of the metal detector. I cannot think about anything else, or an accident could happen.” Sokhon’s supervisor, Thor Thoeun, stands safely 25 metres away, watching. With tension gripping his face, not wanting to disturb her, he whispers: “We are always scared in the minefield. When the detector signals, Sokhon will pinpoint the spot with a red chip.” Then she will excavate to find what is underneath. If she sees a mine she will place a red triangle pointing toward the danger. Then she will blow a whistle for the supervisor to check the item. If it is a landmine it is generally destroyed in situ. Twenty minutes later a Chinese Type 72 mine is found. Sokhon’s supervisors prepare demolition equipment, delicately placing 100 grammes of TNT explosive on it. Four deminers begin announcing on loudspeakers to surrounding villagers: “We inform all of you working near our minefield. We will conduct a demolition shortly. Please evacuate the area!” On a hill 100 metres away farmers harvesting cassava disappear out of sight. Then Sokhon’s supervisor connects black demolition wire to a detonator switch. He blows three long blasts on a whistle followed by three short ones. Then he presses the detonator, triggering an earshattering explosion that booms across the valley. At 3pm Sokhon and her team descend from the minefield to their base camp, dead tired. Their uniforms are covered with brown soil and leaves, and drenched with sweat. Their workdays start at 4am and finish at 5pm. On the way home Sokhon stops at the local market to shop for dinner – she still has to cook for her family. The shopkeepers joke with her as a photographer is following her: an unusual sight in Pailin until recently. In 2002, Angelina Jolie adopted her first child, Maddox, in Battambang, and started a foundation, bringing a touch of glamour to the locals, many of whom hope to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Sokhon smiles shyly, embarrassed by the attention, but later she jokes: “I also want to be famous! Do you think Brad Pitt will come to see me?”Arriving at home at sunset, Sokhon’s daughter Sreymao, 7, runs out to greet her. Sokhon sits down in front of her

parent’s house – a bamboo hut with a sheet metal roof, and measures 5x4m. Indoor electricity comes from a car battery that powers one 12-watt light bulb and a small TV. Sokhon’s house next door has a palm frond roof and measures 3x3m. She shares it with Sreymao. Sokhon changes her black work boots for pink slippers. She pauses to put Sreymao’s hair in a ponytail and begins cooking. Sokhon’s mother, Kep Nann, sits down outside, saying: “We are so proud of her!” She admits Sokhon is the primary reason the family is slowly escaping poverty and paying for her daughter and siblings to attend school. With Sokhon’s help they recently purchased a small plot of land in O’Chheukrom where they plan to build a house.The last light of day trickles in over the Cardamom Mountains, highlighting Sokhon’s smile. She sits down with Sreymao who is busy studying her 2nd grade schoolwork. “I want her to be a doctor, but we are too poor for that. I hope she can be a nurse,” Sokhon says. Standing behind them working, far enough away that he can’t hear, is Sokhon’s new husband, Khhuan Ry. Sokhon says: “My husband gives me good support. I cannot find another man better than him. He doesn’t drink and helps with the housework. He carries water from the river. He is responsible and takes Sreymao to school. All my hope came back to me. So I opened my heart back up. ord fever is on the rise. The much-anticipated first womenswear collection under the Tom Ford umbrella has arrived on our shores. At his über-slick velvet accented saloon in The Dubai Mall, a flurry of sequins, exquisite tailoring and oh-so-dahling cocktail attire brings fashion traffic to a standstill. The power his garments evoke is undeniable, a true alchemist of fashion, he famously mixes pure 70s glamour with just the right amount of provocation. The man himself cuts quite the striking figure, too, with his dashing Hollywoodworthy looks. He is rarely seen without his statement unbuttoned crisp white shirt and beautifully tailored suit (his casual attire), an echo of his equally perfectionist work ethic. Standing firmly at the helm of Gucci and YSL as creative director, he dominated the realm of high-end womenswear for a decade from 1994 to 2004, both solidifying his fashion forerunner status and making him every high profile female’s go-to gent for gasp-inducing gorgeous garments. As the man himself professes: “My last few collections at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent were some of my best. But I was really unhappy and could not have continued… I got back into this because I love clothes. I love women’s fashion. I want to do it.” A brief departure from the world of womenswear coincided with the launch of the Tom Ford emporium and his directorial debut with the stylishly shot The Single Man. The break away was instrumental in confirming his love of the craft. “I’ve been watching fashion for the last five or six years… we’ve strayed away from real clothes. I want to make beautiful clothes for women and men

hen Rad Hourani’s slightly androgynous, all-black clad models exited the runway in Paris it symbolised the close of another Fashion Week and the industry power-players, bloggers and buyers could once again return to their respective capitals, fresh fashion fodder in hand and head’s brimming with new season inspiration. Fortunately, the fashion world is an all-encompassing marvel, transcending the boundaries of the Big Four to take in sights further afield. While French editors could finally put their feet up, organisers of Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) were finalising schedules, drawing up media dockets and shipping in sleek white seating for a plush new VIP lounge. Taking over Zabeel Hall at the World Trade Centre, the new-look DFW boasted a packed schedule featuring local, up-andcoming and international designers. Show regular Hassan Shehryar Yasin (HSY) proved a highlight on day one with a collection that celebrated traditional Pakistani tailoring and handicrafts (think embroidered cropped jackets and embellished saris), while acclaimed Indian designer Rajesh Pratap Singh closed the event with a packed out finale, showcasing signature deconstructed dresses and sequined tunics. Joining DFW’s veteran designers were six up-and-coming talents, students Azdan Zandi, Anna Guracz, Sarah Mrad, Kay Li, Sophie Wanney and Sara Al Rafai, who impressed with collections that fused an experimental use of fabrics and futuristic tailoring, confidently packaged into consistent and well-executed themes.


FASHION WEEK ROUND-UP EMERGING TALENT Six aspiring designers (including two students from leading French fashion school Esmod), showcased collections that ranged from the romantic (a la Nina Ricci) to the futuristic (a la Gareth Pugh). Inspired by the movie The Chronicles of Riddick, Kay Li presented fitted jackets with strong shoulder cuts in shades of bronze-copper, black, white and grey, while Azdan Zandi celebrated ladylike grace with simple shifts and flared jumpsuits. One of the show highlights was Lebanese designer Sarah Mrad, who offered up a wearable collection of balloonshaped dresses and skirts with bowbelt detail that celebrated the female form – a Burberry-esque body-con dress being one of the many covetable pieces to hit the runway.

MUMBAI SE PRESENTS MEHER & RIDDHIMA Popular fashion boutique Mumbai Se collaborated with four of its 32 stocked designers for a spot on the DFW schedule – Hemant & Nandita, Mynah by Reynu Taandon, Ekta Singh and, of course, Meher & Riddhima – the designers largely credited with creating Dubai’s love affair with vibrant print day dresses and Swarovski-encrusted eveningwear. For A/W11, the duo showed signature cocktail dresses, tunics and floor-length gowns in georgette and chiffon, in addition to hair bands and clutch bags from their new accessories line. “This season, we’ve been inspired by Oscar Wilde, Paco Rabanne and the 1960s,” Meher and Riddhima revealed. “Our top three pieces from the collection are the bronze silk drape jumpsuit, the metallic ‘Oscar’ dress and the colour block tulle dress.”

HSY As with all HSY shows, video imaging played a large part in setting the ‘theme’ of the collection, which for A/W11 revolved around the title ‘Voyage National’, or as Hassan Shehryar Yasin later told EW: “A journey through the diverse and rich cultural heritage of Pakistan.” Embroidery for the 42-outfit collection was produced by an organisation that aims to improve the working conditions of Pakistan’s artisanal women, resulting in eye-catching yet wearable waistcoats, dresses and jackets in a palette dominated by deep green and mustard. “The inspiration was a multitude of embroideries,” the designer revealed, adding: “Some date back many hundreds of years. Each piece in the collection has embellishment to represent a different region of Pakistan.” GAURAV GUPTA A newbie to the DFW schedule, Indian designer Gaurav Gupta was out to make an impact with flashy audiovisuals depicting water droplets, billowing smoke, fish fins and bird wings (all elements that contributed to his ‘fluidity in the world’ concept), and later showed off abstract designs in his vibrant mix of ruffle dresses, statement saris and structured jackets.

BACKSTAGE AT DFW Rimmel were in charge of perfecting the make-up looks during DFW, which ranged from experimental and downright demonic (Gaurav Gupta) to fresh-faced and girly (Emerging Talent).

air envy is running rife, with an astonishing 91 percent of women being unhappy with the natural state of their locks. Letting your hair hang loose has had a glamorous make over. Wavy hair has a natural bounce and the slight curl ensures the surface catches the light, paving the way for hair with a mirror-like shine. The secret to a true centre parting is to train the hair by pinning it down whilst you sleep. To create effortless layered waves, run an extra strong mousse and curl spray through damp hair. Once dry, opt for wide barreled hair tongs to curl the hair section by section. A sophisticated up do has come a long way since the scruffy bun. Turn yourself into the ultimate Hitchcock heroine with a high fashion twist. Divide your hair into both ‘fringe’ and ‘beehive’ sections. With the beehive, create a ponytail leaving a sizeable halo of hair around it loose. Slip the hair donut over your pony and start backcombing the entire section. Pull the halo section of hair up and over the donut backcombing as you go; the more backcombing the higher the end result will be. Secure all the hair by pulling the ends together into a ponytail at the top of the beehive. Curl the loose ends with tongs and secure with bobby pins. For the fringe, create a mass of curls using a small-barreled curling tong, back comb at the roots and sweep to one side. The key to this look is a super-strength hairspray.

For the bold among us, a Fifties inspired coif with a quiff is the epitome of style. Start by sectioning hair from ear to ear over the top of the head using a pintail comb, then backcomb the front section focusing at the roots. Run a texturising paste through the lengths of the hair and sweep it forward to create the quiff. Pull the hair across the forehead and to one side securing with bobby pins at the temple. For the remaining back section of hair opt for a sleek ponytail for a nod to true equestrian style.

For big hair with an added bounce, channel your inner disco diva and sport a halo of tight curls. The secret here is to drench damp hair in a volumising mousse from root to tip followed by a curl spray. Taking small sections of hair wrap them around a small barreled tong and pin each curl tight to the head with a bobby pin. Mist hair all over with a heavy-duty hairspray and leave to cool. Once cooled the curls will be set, remove the pins and rather than using a brush run your fingertips through the curls for a more ethereal effect. 108

hen you are on top of your game, I find, whatever your profession you act without pretense, with confidence and have nothing to prove. This is how I would describe perfumer and artisan Jean-Claude Ellena. The first ever full-time perfumer to be employed by the most prestigious brand in the world, Hermès, Jean-Claude has carte blanche to develop beautiful, sensuous scents and, like everything that comes out of the Hermès house, his creations are rich, luxurious and, best of all, timeless. Jean-Claude’s tenure began with the first of the Garden Perfume fragrance line (there are now four) Un Jardin Méditerrannée (2003), which was inspired by the Tunisian garden of Leïla Menchari, director of display for Hermès. In 2005, Un Jardin sur le Nil was created – this time the gardens at Assouan in Egypt were his muse. In 2008, Un Jardin après la Mousson came to life after his travels to India and now, in 2011, Un Jardin sur le Toit (garden on a rooftop) takes us closer to the Hermès home at the flagship boutique, 24 Faubourg in Paris, to a garden with a difference.

The Hermès garden in Paris – the source of Jean-Claude’s inspiration

In addition to housing all the Birkins, belts and bottles of fragrances, the boutique is also home to the Hermès museum, artisan workshops and a roof top garden. “During the Second World War it was a working garden full of potatoes and tomatoes,” explains Jean-Claude. “After the war, and after Jean-Louis Dumas took over the responsibility of Hermès, he wanted to make this garden as beautiful as possible and so it is white. On his travels to Normandy he brought back an apple, pear and magnolia tree to plant in the garden and these fragrances make up the body of Un Jardin sur le Toit. I know this garden well and when I came up with the idea [to use the Hermès garden as his inspiration] the family liked the concept.” Making this fragrance a truly family affair, Philippe Dumas created the artwork, which appears on the perfume box and in the advertising campaign. “Philippe is a member of the fifth generation of the Hermès family and also an artist,” says Jean-Claude. “He gives his point of view of the garden, one that is in the centre of Paris and from which you can see the city with the roofs and streets. In his mind, you can also recognise the Eiffel tower and Montmartre. It’s all imaginary, but at the centre of his attention is this very special, and beautiful, garden.” Most of the fragrances developed under Jean-Claude’s nose, are suitable scents for both women and men. “It is only quite a recent trend

to have both a male and female fragrance. This started at the beginning of the 20th century and was for economic and marketing reasons – to sell two products instead of one. But we like to give the freedom for you to choose. If you think about our approach at Hermès, it is quite unique and different. One thing you need to know is that I don’t smell the market; I don’t care what the market does. We do no tests, no focus group or any of that kind of marketing approach – we don’t believe in that. We base decisions on our sensitivity and our emotions. We share what we want to put on the market and together we decide this is a perfume we want to put on the shelves.” His father and uncle were both perfumers, so Jean-Claude was born into the fragrance world and explains: “I was born in Grasse, so I was a child of perfume and it was all quite natural. I was a bad pupil at school and my father decided when I was 16 years old to make me work in the industry.” These days, Jean-Claude develops his fragrances at his house in the South of France, aided by his two assistants, and develops two perfumes a year – although this is not set in stone. “I spend a lot of time on each perfume, but if I am not ready we are able to say we need more time – we are lucky, we can do that.” Although passionate about his craft, Jean-Claude is still humble about his work and says that the most rewarding thing about perfumery is creating: “The pleasure is there and when [the fragrance] is finished I liken it to when you make a baby, and after that the baby is no longer yours – it has to make its own life. oung, talented and beautiful to boot, Florrie Arnold, to use her full name, is not your typical twenty something. The British starlet is a singer, songwriter and now spokesmodel for the latest fragrant offering by Nina Ricci. In person, her wide-set blue eyes and mass of blonde hair give her a naïve, girlish charm. Yet, when she steps on stage, she professes to feel most alive, and we witness a more effervescent and quirky version of Florrie. Performing on stage barefoot at her exclusive gig in Dubai’s Art Sawa gallery, Florrie conjures up an image of a 1960s pixie, jumping from the mic to the drums (which she has been playing since she was six) for a jamming session with her band. Nina Ricci, a brand known for its French femininity and romanticism, shook things up on the fashion front with their appointment of Peter Copping in 2009. This year the company aimed to do the same with the fragrance house, and Florrie was pinned as the girl to do it. The brand describes the discovery of Florrie as love at first sight, with just the right amount of rock chick edge juxtaposed against her elegance and fairytale-esque quality.

s a teen, my signature scent went something like this‌ It was either A) Whatever my classmates were spritzing on. Or B) Whatever box set I’d received in my Santa sack. uch is the zeal with which women search for a miracle cure that will endow them with the body they crave, that followers of fad diets often term themselves ‘disciples’. Whether you worship at the temple of Mr Atkins, swear by the made in Miami South Beach diet, or substitute meals with copious cups of skinny cafe lattes (allegedly the path of über-stylist Rachel Zoe) but still can’t fit into ‘those’ jeans, perhaps the time has come to ditch the guerrilla tactics in the battle of the bulge, ignore the fads and opt instead for the simple method of starting to ‘think yourself thin’? Experts agree that by applying the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, you can stick to your healthy eating plan, avoid sabotaging thoughts (along the lines of continuously giving yourself ‘opt out’ clauses, such as you’ve had a bad day, or justifying that a ‘cake isn’t really that calorie-laden, is it’?). You just need to change the way you think. Jared Alden, a Dubai-based psychotherapist at the German Centre for Neurology and Psychiatry, encourages us to “use the principles of behavioural learning theory to properly change how you eat”. Jared says: “Set one small measurable goal at a time. For example, decide that for the next three weeks you are not going to drink soda, or perhaps eat French fries. You can also set positive-based goals, such 124

as promising to eat a small fresh salad every day instead. You may well have an emotional response to this, such as boredom or anger, and this could be the key to why your diets have failed in the past.” He adds: “Diets fail to take into account what we will feel about dieting and how food contains and distracts us from emotions that can be inconvenient and scary. By taking on one small measurable change you will be able to compassionately and practically engage with the emotion that has been getting in your way. Think of it like riding your bike for the first time – it will be scary and unfamiliar, with a few scraped knees along the way, but you get back up and keep riding.” Denial leads to yearning; quick-fix diets that forbid certain foods or force you to follow tight perimeters with no exceptions often lead to followers obsessing about them, or are just plain impractical in the longterm. “Diets don’t work because they rely on willpower, which works for only two per cent of the population,” argues Milan Keswani-Gurnamal, founder of The Third Eye, a Dubai-based mind, body and energy centre. “The term diet implies a short-term fix which rarely sticks in the long-run. For effective weight management, an entire lifestyle change is necessary, as agreed by nutritionists and fitness experts.” Jared agrees: “Diets do not teach us how to eat, they teach us what to eat. We may have the information about what is a good breakfast, but how do we fit

They are unsustainable because you haven’t dealt with the root cause of the challenge and so it is only a matter of time before the situation returns.” Jared calls this the ‘boot camp mentality’. “We want to be quickly over-hauled, we want an expert to force us to change and then we imagine we will keep up with that change once it is achieved. This may be true for several months, but I don’t predict that lasting change is possible by doing this. You need to learn how to eat in your real world. You need to incorporate these behaviours so your emotions can learn and by controlled by them – not the other way round.” There are several easy methods of adapting your mind to think like a thin person. Setting yourself small, achievable goal is one way, as a sudden cold-turkey overhaul rarely lasts. If you are tempted to stray, stop and think why you are tempted; is there a trigger that you recognise and can later try to avoid? How do you feel when you are denying yourself something you want? Write down your thought processes, as it helps to track your emotions and can help indentify specific triggers – such as periods when you emotionally eat, or foods you specifically crave at certain times… It has also been proven that people who have support (from friends or mentors etc) tend to better stick to their routines, so enlist a ‘support network’ to be your Mr Motivators. On top of this, a trusted therapist, who can explore your emotional state, could be an additional bonus in beating the bulge. Milan is a firm belief in dealing with the issues that lead to weight gain in the first place. “People don’t realise that experiences and traumas that happened in childhood often still affect them, and their biggest influence is in the areas of body image, proportion and height leading to issues with self-esteem, self-love and self-deprecation. Lack of self-love is often the biggest culprit.” The Third Eye’s weight loss programmes address the mind, which in turn affects the body; ‘Think yourself thin’ uses alternative therapies like dream therapy, vision boards and hypnotherapy in an eight-week programme that combines suggestion-based work with actual therapy to deal with emotional issues that might have triggered weight gain.

One of its clients identified the fact that, as a child, she was blackmailed into finishing all the food on her plate – even when she wasn’t hungry. Her parents used to evoke feelings of guilt, using the image of starving Somali children to induce her to eat – and then, as she grew older, to overeat. Once this was addressed on a mental level, she was able to change her eating habits. Laura acknowledges that there is profound scepticism among many people about using alternative therapy to deal with a problem perceived as being physical. “It isn’t helpful to get on the bandwagon of ‘I have a mental problem’ but gently becoming aware of your thoughts, feelings and emotions that are creating what you are experiencing is incredibly helpful. Knowledge is power and knowing thy self is the key to transformation.” Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor’s endorsement of Rujata Diwekar, best-selling author of Women & The Weight Loss Tamasha, has given Diwekar an elevated platform from which to preach her mantra of ditching extreme diets and instead focussing on the individual and what works for your particular body type. She promotes a holistic attitude to well-being that has gained numerous followers disheartened by yo-yo dieting, turned on by her sassy commentary and sensible approach. She argues that her book is “not a weight loss book, it’s a ‘get real’ book”. She says: “It doesn’t tell you how to lose weight, it tells you to throw out the scales and measure success or results depending on whether you have learned to listen to your stomach and eat according to your innate wisdom, versus measuring food or consuming low calorie food.” Diwekar is lauded for being one of the first authors to cover all aspects of health and well-being, rather than just listing do’s and don’ts that we generally already know about but either can’t, or don’t, follow. Put simply, we need to re-evaluate what works for us individually rather than blindly believing what the tabloids tell us is working for an all-encompassing mass of starlets and fashionistas. We need to think of food as essential nourishment, not just calories. Jackie Keller, a nutritionist who counts Angelina Jolie and Susan Sarandon among her clients, emphasises the point: “I try to educate my clients to make food their friend. Most of us think of food as an enemy that makes us fat. Successful dieters change that mindset and befriend favourable foods.” Changing your eating patterns drastically is often easier in the short term than actually changing your mind-set. The difference is that the former is more often just a quick fix that may attain equally quick results, but is rarely sustainable in the long run. Working with yourself, and/or a trained professional, to alleviate the causes of your unhealthy patterns and making a conscious decision to re-evaluate and rethink your own behaviour is the only way to overhaul your lifestyle, and thus overhaul your body. ■

THINK YOURSELF THIN: IN EIGHT STEPS 1. Respond to sabotaging thoughts: identify triggers that evoke these thoughts and minimise exposure to them. 2. Understand your hunger: learn to tell the difference between the need to eat and

the desire to eat. 3. Don‘t focus on unfairness: or on what others can eat and you can‘t – focus on successful dieters and use them as your inspiration.

4. Write it down: unless you make changes in your thinking, you probably won‘t sustain behaviourial change. Make motivational cards to help you.

5. Build up your resistance muscle: at every step try to strengthen your resistance muscle and weaken your giving-in muscle. 6. Alleviate tension: use distraction techniques to

alleviate stress associated with cravings. 7. Get planning: write a weekly food plan to avoid spontaneous decisions. 8. Eliminate emotional eating: find the trigger first. JUNE 2011

Food lovers, city slickers and high rollers gathered Zuma’s terrace in DIFC to outbid each other for the chance to take home the best cooking talent in the emirate, all in the name of charity. Guests made their high stakes offers as part of the Chefs For Japan event, with the head chefs from seven of Dubai’s finest restaurants auctioning off their services in the kitchen to the highest bidder. The charity initiative, organised by Zuma co-founders Rainer Becker and Arjun Waney, was launched to raise funds for the Japanese Red Cross to help the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit the country earlier this year. Hosted by Ajaz Sheikh, Zuma’s director of operations for the Middle East, the bidding from foodies was fast and furious as each chef was auctioned off to cater for a private party of 12 in the winner’s home. With high-end restaurants such as The Rivington Grill, La Petite Maison and Zuma, represented on the RISHIKA CHAINANI night, the selection of canapés on offer presented a taste AND NARESH CHAINANI of some of the finest menus in Dubai. However, enter the C’est Moi girls, Rashmi and Muskan, who hosted a trunk and fashion show that set new rules on how to host an event in Dubai.
