Art Deco Owl Bookends by Shorter & Sons

Bookends were a significant cultural object in the early and mid-20th century. Essentially a prop used to keep a row of books upright, bookends are one the most simple and decorative machines invented. Their decorativeness captured the imagination and, like a shelf of books, reflected one’s sense of style and interests. Bookends: another chapter showcases treasured bookends held in private collections. This exhibition is an opportunity to view some fantastic pieces dating from the 1920s to the 1980s. Included are significant works by Australian art potters depicting native flora and fauna as well as dancing penguins, cheeky cats, ebony elephants, harlequins, courting couples, horses, dogs, fish and ships -you name it and in all probability it is a bookend.

Accelerate your browsing experience Ken Donnellan, Internet Technology Librarian

The next time you are surfing your favourite web site at Mosman Library, make sure you check out Google’s own browser, Chrome. Even if you are a died in the wool Internet Explorer user, give Chrome a whirl. You will find it is faster, more secure, possesses increased stability, and has a more aesthetically pleasing interface. Chrome currently holds 11 percent of the browser market. Use of Internet Explorer is dropping, down to 49 percent market share. One of the major changes you will notice is the ability to search within the address bar. This adds to Chrome’s streamlined appearance, with no need for a separate search box.

Top 5 Literary Heroes I’d Like to Marry Kate Stewart, Children’s Librarian

1. Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables. It’s a long and abiding love affair that started out in childhood and has never waned. Just like theirs. 2. John Thornton from North and South. But really only as portrayed by Richard Armitage in the BBC miniseries.

3. Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. All the steamy romance of Jane Austen’s archetypal hero but with extra zombie-slaying goodness. Win. 4. Jacob Coote from Looking for Alibrandi. It’s all about the motorbike, really. 5. Lloyd Dobler from Say Anything. I know what you’re thinking, “Isn’t Say Anything a movie?”, but it was originally based on a short story written by Cameron Crowe, so Lloyd makes the list on a technicality. Who could resist a boom box serenade? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch the film immediately. You won’t regret it.
