s your surfing skills progress so too does your wanderlust. As a kid you’ll grow bored of your local and ride your bike around the next headland, at 18 it’ll be interstate trips, then overseas to sketchy warungs, upgrading to plush digs when money’s finally made. it doesn’t stop there though, one trip is never enough. Why is that? We’re never content. relationships, careers and money are continually thrown away in pursuit of playing in the ocean. Why? Because what’s better than a surf trip with your mates? nothing. Welcome to surfing life’s Travel Bible. take a look »

politician will use it when it’s time to go public about his latest sex scandal. lance Armstrong used it, severely, for years before Oprah pinned him on her couch and got the truth. A devilishly ambiguous word, “discretion” can be manipulated to mean both restraint and unrestrained, yet, unbelievably, it is the official policy of most airlines when determining boardbag fees, always a source of depression in the travelling surfer’s life. When China Airlines nailed American pro surfer Cheyne Magnusson for $1050 in fees on a recent trip to Bali, he was incensed. As the new owner of the most expensive quiver since Jimmy slade had his boards filled with diamonds by smugglers in an early episode of Baywatch, Magnusson decided to serve the airline a taste of its own medicine, via facebook. The social surf world, rallied on by Kelly slater, who instagramed Magnusson’s angry fB post, quickly

exploded with revived scorn for the airline industry’s unbridled raping of our wallets. unfortunately, China Airlines, being the good citizen of the state they are, quickly removed Magnusson’s growing thread, causing the fight to largely fizzle out. Clearly, Magnusson’s lone social protest couldn’t spark radical change on an industry-wide scale, but what it has done is inspire fresh insight from within the surf media and among travelling surfers on the

dilemma of excess-baggage fees. We’ve compiled the best, somewhat legal, techniques for any surfer gearing up for his or her next overseas trip, combining classic tactics, new tricks, and a list of fly and no-fly airlines from around the world. Discretion, remember, is in the eye of the beholder, so get informed, stop being so goddamn complacent, and let’s beat the airlines at their own game!

airlines

CLASSIC TACTICS

stop pACking like A ChiCk And you thought you’d get a “size matters” joke here. Grow up. Anyway, it’s weight that matters most. the major airlines have all different limits for checked baggage, but most top out at 25 kilos, so forget about that massive coffin bag you bought in the ‘90s. get a two-board bag and try to get just one board shaped that will meet all your needs, because, let’s face it, you ain’t robert kelly slater. use the remaining space in the bag for a few pieces of clothing and ditch the roller bag or bulky backpack. You can clean your clothes wherever you go or just remain filthy, “outfits” are for package tourists. group Merger Companies do it when they’re facing bankruptcy, which is a similar scenario to you and your mates

planning a trip none of you really have the cash for. in this case, dust off that old massive coffin bag in your garage and put everyone’s boards together, split the cost at the ticketing counter, and use the money you saved for $8 cocktails at the gate. overCoMe stereotYpe It’s amazing what a little acquired intelligence will do for a surfer’s reputation, as well as his piggybank. When considering a trip that will include a multi-carrier itinerary, do your homework before purchasing a ticket. sometimes when re-checking bags on to a connecting airline, you’ll get stung for even more oversize baggage fees. look into what airlines operate in the places you want to visit. it might end up being cheaper if you buy your tickets separately and build your own itinerary.

feign CongeniAlitY The old classic that still works! get to the airport early and with the most charm you can muster from your airline-hating soul. A fresh ticket agent is a happy, more understanding ticket agent, and one that just might save you a lot of coin. lie Let’s face it: charm can work, but rarely. so fuck it; bite back when the timing’s right. let that anger simmer over the hundreds that were extorted from you by the airline and then, just before your trip comes to an end, crease your board, bust a fin out, break the nose or tail off ... and claim the airline did it when you pick it up on the other end.* Charm, scam, whatever, discretion, right?

new TrICkS go Without Your boardshorts are stretchier than stretchy pants. little old Chinese women are shaping surfboards. Brazilians are leading the next aerial movement. Weird new things are happening in the surf-world, folks, so why the hell are you still travelling like a neanderthal? the world’s best surf travel destinations, Mexico, Costa rica, el salvador, nicaragua, usA, Brazil, europe, hawaii, Bali, south Africa, to name a few – all have local shapers and/ or surf shops. so if any of these places are in your itinerary, just leave the boards at home. You’ll find a suitable board once you’re in country, plus you’ll never have to lug around bags the size and weight of a dead body, and a favorite of drug smugglers and grumpy Customs agents. BeCoMe A fine Art DeAler What’s in this bag you ask, ma’am? Well, four Monet landscapes, of course! We all know how much surfers like to toss the golf club argument around, but what are we doing about it? nothing! slackers, all. take a look at an airline’s website and marvel over the gaggle of other large, fragile items that fly free. Ditch the blatant surfboard bag and box up your sticks, making sure the package is within

the weight limit, then plastic wrap or duct tape that thing so no nosey ticketing agent will ever be able to peek inside. go solo This is another trick, like combining boards, that works only under certain circumstances: you must be travelling with others, and your baggage other than your boardbag has to pass as carry-on. instead of being idiots and checking in at the same time, thus ensuring the ticketing agent has a heart attack at the sight of that mountain of luggage behind you, check in separately, leaving your backpack or roller bag with your mate(s) hiding out of sight. that way you roll up to the ticketing counter with your board bag only. if you’re surfboard bag isn’t ridiculously huge, the fact that it is your only piece of luggage will sit much better with the ticketing agent and should avoid any messy arguments over weight and/or luggage count. Be An entrepreneur There are home shares and wife swaps, so why not board exchanges? Consider this a free gift to all you entrepreneurs out there: start a board-sharing organisation and promote the shit out of it online. *We’re kidding of course. surfing life • 077 • issue 296

surfers from around the world can hook up through the site and organise boards for travelling surfers to borrow for the duration of their visit. We’ll let you work out the fine print. ship it This is a tricky one. Large airline carriers, as well as private shipping companies, offer freight service, but they charge at a volumetric rate, meaning they charge by the volume your goods will take up in a package. that kind of measurement doesn’t bode well for a surfboard. Airfreight shipping does, however, begin to get attractive when you want to send four or more boards. still no cheap price (four boards with Dhl from sydney to los Angeles will run you about $600, for example), it still is a lot less than what many carriers will ding you for at the counter. pre-pAY Most airline carriers allow you to pay for your baggage ahead of time, even oversized, and at a reduced rate. it’s worth checking on your airlines’ pre-pay options before booking your tickets. it won’t save you a ton of money, but it may save a lot of unexpected hassle.

get rich OK, so this requires paying out initially, and for a quite a while, before you see any rewards. thus, the infrequent traveller should avoid this tip. But for the frequent traveller, flying Business or first could save you some coin at check-in. first off, your weight allowance goes up when flying as a priority passenger; and, second, the airline world is a heartless caste system where the bourgeois class gets perks that are considered illegalities among the peasants back in economy. if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you are poor and fiscally irresponsible, so why not go out there and get yourself a few of those milesearning credit cards from one of the airlines ... you might have 20 grand in travel debt by the time you’re 50, but damned if you won’t be flying with your feet up, a glass of bubbly in your mitt, and a beautiful, rich woman to tell your wild stories of adventure to in the next seat over.

Protest! It worked in the 1960s and kind of for the Occupy movement. Not so much for Cheyne Magnusson. there are a few heinously thought-out and designed surfboard baggage fee petition websites out there, but we say let’s do better. one letter of hatred won’t work, but thousands will. Magnusson’s original idea was to put one nasty comment on china Airlines’ facebook page for every dollar they charged him, $1050. they may have cut him off, but they haven’t cut you off yet. other than social platforms, there are websites out there that can help you fan out your rage, flyersrights.org and ipetition.com are a good start. go on then! everyone can be angry and anonymous on the web!

Airlines: the gooD AnD the uglY Lucky for us, Australian airlines have the most lenient surfboard policies on earth. the rest of the world ain’t so friendly, particularly the us and europe. here are 10 airlines to avoid at all costs, and 10 to get cozy with. Hts resort put an end to this on the 15th of March through a process of buying back the eggs and incubating them in a turtle pit on the beachfront of the resort. Guests are given three eggs when they arrive by a local villager. they then take them to the incubation area and cover them with sand. twelve weeks later the new baby turtles will race into the water and swim away.

urfing Life advises when you finish school to take a year off. Do a ski season in the US or Canada, followed by an extended jaunt in Indo or Mexico, arriving home just in time for summer. You’ll surf places you’ve been reading about in these pages for years, catch disease aplenty and generally have a greater time than you could ever imagine. And then it’s time to get serious, sorta. following a year off you’re faced with two choices ... Apprenticeship (which means if you find the right boss you’ll surf a lot), university (you’ll surf a lot, and can potentially keep travelling). Most unis in Australia have exchange programs in place that allow you to gain credit from studying aboard, and you’ll even continue to receive your much needed government handouts. so where to next? continues »
