Analysing My Narrative Arc; Why Is DANCE Not In The Olympics

Section 1: Montage of archive footage. What: This sections is mainly about the opening up of my documentary, so the introduction. I want a montage of dance groups competing in different competitions and footage from the Olympics (the best bits) i.e the opening ceremony and the winners. This montage will then go to a cutaway of me (the presenter). Where: I would be in Westfield, on the bridge as the montage cuts away to me.

Westfield Bridge

Stratford Station

Why: The reasoning for opening up like this is to interest the viewers and almost captivate them, it is important that the opening is very engaging as it sets up how my documentary will be; i.e fast past, entertaining and ‘not boring’. I want it to seem exciting so the cuts will be sharp to the music. Who: The people that will be in it would be myself, the presenter and the archive footage of dance groups; I.M.D, Sorelle, Boy Blue, New Movements and Trilogy. (Selected dance groups that I know so I can gain permission.

Duration: The opening sequence/montage will last up to 30seconds with a song over the top which will be Cbat by Hudson Mohawk which is just an instrumental. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_6j2A630_Q

Section 2: Me walking towards the camera as it zooms out as I walk.

I also want references so when I

say something it cuts away to the things i.e talking about the Olympics you may see little shots of the Olympics to remind viewers. Where: On the bridge of Stratford Westfield walking towards the train station as the camera follows me there. (Compliments that the Olympics where held in Stratford). Stratford Stairs leading onto the station

What: This will be introducing my topic, opening it up with a rhetorical question, ‘Did you watch the Olympics’. I will then explain my point about dance not being in the Olympics but I will not lead on to any branches i.e I will get it straight to the point by informing the audience, was it dance? How do people get involved? Just the basic point of what dance is leading to different dance genres. I will close my introduction with a rhetorical question asking ‘Do you think dance should be in the Olympics’ Who: I the presenter will only be in it. Duration: Roughly 40Seconds with me talking directly into the camera with cutaways.

Section 3:

This section will be based on vox pops, which follows up from me asking a question directly then it cuts straight to random people answering questions. These will be short answers. One answer per person; I want more people to answer the questions rather than one person talking about. Where: I will do the Vox Pops in Stratford Westfield, as I want to keep it very Olympic related, which makes the most sense to interview those that live in Stratford where the Olympics got held. Stratford Westfield

What: The questions I will be asking will be shown as graphics before you see people answer them; you will not actually hear me ask the questions. The questions will be? What did you like about the Olympic Ceremony? Do you think Dance is a Sport (Explain) If Yes or No? Do you think dance should be in the Olympics as there was 27million views just alone from the UK that watched the open ceremony which was dance based? What would you prefer to watch at the Olympics figure Skating or Dancing? What are your opinions on the Olympics? (Above are just the main questions) Who: Random people from the age 15-30, any gender, any interest Duration: Roughly 40Seconds.

Section 4:

Cut back to me walking down gurney road towards the dance studio, this will consist of me reflecting

on everyone’s opinions and seeing how I can get the bottom of trying to see why dance is still not considered as an Olympic sport. Where: Gurney road walking towards the Dance Studio What: This will be me walking and discussing which will then go up to me filming some of the open classes you will see which leads to me introducing the first person that I will be interviewing. The first person I will interview will be Kenrick Sandy, choreographer of the London Olympics. Gurney Road

Dance Studio

Who: Myself talking, leading up to Boy Blue dancers in rehearsals Duration: Roughly 30Seconds.

Section 5: Introduction to Kenrick Sandy, which will be a montage of all his work put together (most would have previously been filmed) this will also include graphics over the top, I want the montage to also look like the montages you see on X factor before the guess act come on. Where: As it is a montage it would have no specific location but the filming I will film would be in the dance studio. Centre Stage dance studio

Kenrick Sandy

What: Montage of all the different dance footage that Kenrick has choreographed and been a part of, I will also film his open class that would be going on the same day I interview him. Who: Kenrick and boy Blue member at open class/rehearsals Duration: Roughly 20Seconds.

Section 6: Interview with Kenrick Sandy, in his office inside the dance studio. Interview will be based on the Olympics and his involvement and then will lead on to my main question. Where: Gurney Road, Centre Stage dance studio in Kenrick’s office. Kenrick’s Office

What: I will interview Kenrick in his office and have cutaways to different objects in his office i.e certificates. The questions I will ask Kenrick would be the following things. What was your role in the Olympics? How did you find the opportunity? How many dancers were apart of the entire opening ceremony (if known)? What did you think of the feedback of the opening ceremony in term of the dance element as you had incredible feedback from lots of different feedback from tabloids? (Cuts to newspaper headlines) Do you think dance should be in the Olympics? Why do you think dance is not yet in the Olympics? Who: Kenrick and boy Blue members Duration: Roughly 2minutes.

Section 7: Me talking directly towards the camera where I will then go onto my first topic. This will be about dance competitions and their similarities with sporting events. Where: Chadwell heath academy with studio set up with a green screen of maybe the Olympics behind me.

What: This will be a simple set up with me just addressing the audience with some cuts from close up shots to mid shots. I will talk about dance competitions and their will be cutaways to things I have filmed; i.e dance competitions and online sources scoring system. Who: The presenter (Me) Duration: Roughly 40seconds

Section 8: This will be another montage of dance competitions that you see on the TV often for example competitions like Got to Dance, So you think you can dance, strictly come dancing & Alesha’s best dance crew. These are all examples of high profiled competitions based dance shows that are watched by many people. So it would be a montage of these dance shows. Where: No specific place as it would be archive footage. What: Montage that would relate up to my interview with a dance group that are contestants in the dance showing competition ‘Got To Dance’. Who: Contestants Duration: Roughly 20seconds.

Section 9: This will be an interview with Got to dance semi-finalists I.M.D. Where: The interview will also be in the dance studio. What: I will be doing an interview with I.M.D but this will be more casual as the dancers are young and I will do cutaways to footage of them dancing that I would’ve f filmed the same day at the same studio. So some of the questions would be; So what does I.M.D stand for? How motivated do you have to be to be a dancer? So I know you compete in a lot of competition how do most of them get judges because it must be hard if not all dance group dance the same. What do you think about dance being in the Olympics? Do you think it should be in the Olympics? Last but not least do you think a dancer is an athlete? Who: Presenter and I.M.D

Duration: Roughly 1minute.

Section 10: Me in the studio then reflecting on what I.M.D had to say and see if they supported my point as overall I still need to have a balanced view, then go on to presenting my next topic being the online sources. Where: In the dance studio at Maryland

What: Shot of me in the lounge area of the dance studio where I will some up the interview and reflect on what I.M.D’s thoughts were of the topic. This will lead up to my next topic being the online sources and the opinions on their about the controversy of dance in the Olympics. Who: Myself the presenter Duration: Roughly 30seconds.

Section 11: Me walking towards the swimming leisure and talking about who I am about to meet and interview which is a swimmer training to be in the Olympics. Where: Newham Leisure Centre

What: This will be an interview with a swimmer called Emma who currently trains in east ham leisure centre and she is training to be a part of the Olympics. So it would be nice to see how hard she trains and what it takes to be an athlete. The questions will be things like: How long you been swimming for? What does it take to be an athlete? What do you think of dance being in the Olympics? Who: Myself the presenter and Emma Duration: Roughly 30seconds.

Section 12: At a show which is where I will close the documentary and sum up everything I have spoken about with cutaways from the performances if the night. Where: Lost Theatre in Wandsworth

What: At this point this would be the chance that I can answer the main

question which is should dance be in the Olympics and depending on the feedback I would have got I will then make my answer. Who: Myself the presenter Duration: Roughly 30seconds.
