Music Video Case Study Frankee- Fuck You Right Back The music video I have chosen to do my case study on is Frankee’s music video ‘Fuck You Right Back. I have chosen this particular music video because overall I like the concept of the video with the old footage of the ‘happy relationship’.

The concept I have for my music video is a broken down relationship. Prior to the music video starting I want there to be a mini clip of the relationship breaking down. The artist I want is a male with a female actress playing a role in the video. Throughout the music video I create I want there to be footage of the old relationship and how they was in a fun young happy relationship. I am using the music video Frankie- F your right back because it uses the concepts that I want to contain in my music video..

Basic Information from the album The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Nicole Francine Aiello born June 9, 1983 is an American singersongwriter, known by her stage name, Frankee. She was signed to Marro Records where she then left them in 2006 and immediately was signed to big management. The song I am doing my case study on is ‘Fuck You Right Back’. F.U.R.B. (Fuck You Right Back) is a song by Frankee from her debut studio album, The Good, the Bad, the Ugly. It was released as the lead single from the album in March 2004. The song was released as a response to Eamon's song "Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back)", which had been number-one in the United Kingdom for the previous four weeks. The song reached #1 in the United Kingdom, knocking Eamon's song off the top-spot and remaining in that position for three weeks. The song was also a number-one success in Australia.

Different Aspects Of Releasing Music Videos. Promoting Music Videos. All different music video's have different purposes for posting their videos and networking. A music video could be uploaded to promote either an artists new song or a particular brand. Another common reason for music videos is to make a lot of money from releasing it. Other reasons could include; to showcase an artist look(image) or music, to showcase the lyrics of a song. Frankee used websites to help her make a new single and promote herself as a new artist in the United Kingdom. By having websites that you can download songs from helps music sales raise which is a main reason Frankee’s first song was a hit. Frankee used these websites to get more money from her music video and have more publicity. By Frankee publishing her music all over the internet and on various sites would raise awareness of her music in area’s that may not know her.

Frankee’s song also is appeared on Amazon which is a website a lot of people use whether its to buy music or normal day to day stuff. The whole point of having a song on amazon will help sales.

A example of another artist who has their new single on Amazon is Rihanna with her song ‘We found love’, this is a good example of using a website to help promote a song because Rihanna’s song went straight to number 1 because of lots of people were buying/downloading her song.

Different Aspects Of Releasing

Music Videos. Promoting The song ‘Fuck You Right Back’ by Frankee was released from her debut studio album ‘The Good, the Bad, the Ugly’. It was released as the lead single from the album in March 2004. The song was released as a response to Eamon's song however Frankee decided to do a cover of the song because the first song was a success and got to number on the UK Charts. Frankee released ‘Fuck You Right Back’ because she was positive it would do well in the charts and she released this song to promote her new album. The song ‘Fuck You Right Back’ was released March 15th 2004 which was just over a month before the album got released on April 4th 2004. Frankee knew if her first single got to number one that more people would buy her up and coming album. So the main intension of releasing her song was to promote her album. The song got lots of plays on many different music channels because of the position it came in the charts. It got played on Dance Nation, Stars, Flava and Channel AKA. The song was a breakthrough which made Frankee more known to the public. The main point of releasing this particular song was to promote her up and coming album which failed to chart like her single ‘F.U.R.B’.

An example of artists that used there singles to promote their new album like Frankee is a boy band called JLS they released ‘Beat Again’ as their first ever single with epic records and they used this song/music video to raise awareness of their new album called ‘JLS’. This is a good example because the song ‘Beat Again’ went straight to number 1 which made the public buy the album making the album follow in the same success as the single ‘Beat Again’. The album debuted at number-one in the UK and Ireland. It has been certified four times platinum in the UK, where it was the sixth best-selling album of 2009.

Create Visual Representation Of An Artist Creating a visual representation for an artist is to help the artist to become more known and likable. It is an affective way of being a unique artist and getting more songs sold. Many artist dress the way there songs would come across fir example Rihanna wears a lot of different colour clothes mainly being shorts this reflects on the type of music she sells young, fun and have an element of Africa. Frankee did not have a distinctive way she dressed to her music. This could be a reason why her album failed to debut because she did not have a distinctive look which made her stand out from others. A reason why Frankee may not have had a specific style could have been because she was a new artist still finding herself and what type of music she wanted to release.

The image of Frankee in her music video shows you that she is wearing a red top as her Pj’s this just makes her seem like an ordinary girl which is why she may not have been so appealing to everyone. The outfit she is wearing does not stand out or look different. Its plain and boring which kind of makes the viewer feel the video is going to be boring as well.

Create Visual Representation Of An Artist An example of an artist that uses their appearance to sum up their music is a very famous lady known from her clothes who is Lady Gaga. All of her outfits are crazy and weird which sum up how all of her music videos are. This is effective because it makes the viewers want to see what her next video is like. Lady Gaga has used her costumes to become famous this is what makes her so unique and why people buy her singles and why she is known everywhere. This still image from Lady Gaga’s music video ‘Video Phone’ is an example of the weird costumes she wears in her music video. It helps create imagery because it gives the viewer more to look at rather than just looking at what is going on.

Extend The Playability Of A Song. To make a new music video/song become more noticed they would get posted on music channels. There are loads of music channels and some music channels play specific music genres for example Channel AKA play grime/rap/rnb and the music channel Scruzz play heavy metal/rock music. Music channels are everywhere on the internet and radio but most artist want their music video's to be shown more wider so they are shown on the TV. When music video's get played on the TV the record label pay for it to get played and every time it gets play it gets more views and most likely the music channel will keep showing the music video for at least two months, this means the artist is kept in the public eye for a long period of time.

Frankee is an American artist but by posting her music video on a promoting website like YouTube helps the artist become more known. The start of Frankee’s career ,she was only known in America but became well known everywhere by using one of the most used promoting websites in the word ‘YouTube’ helped her get discovered. YouTube also helped her song get more plays on the TV because people heard the song on YouTube first and then requested for it on music channels. Frankee’s song got 1,711,420 views on Facebook this is what helped her get her single to number 1 in more than 1 country. Frankee used YouTube to promote her single and get her more requests from music channels. An artist that used YouTube to promote themselves and happened to be successful is Justin Bieber. Just Bieber used the same technique as

Extend The Playability Of A Song. The music channel like Starz take requests from viewers to see their music video requested to be played around the time Frankee’s F.U.R.B got released many people requested for it to be Chart 2004 Position played. A lot of viewers requested for Frankee’s song to be played which lead to the song getting lots of Australian 1 plays on Starz which allowed her music video to be Singles more known as other music channels started playing Chart her song and under the spot like because it was always Norwegian 2 on Stars. By getting playability on Starz aloud Frankee’s Singles song to go to number 1 which helped her salary income. Chart This overall helped Frankee’s song get more views and UK Singles 1 more income. Frankee’s song also got played on many Chart other music channels as well. Best positions Fuck You

Music Channels

Music channels are a popular way of watching the latest music videos because it is easy to access and shows you the type of music you like. Music channels offend play a wide range of music genres. Music channels are the main response to people watching music video’s through the channels because the music channels are well known rather than a website that is not known by a lot of people. Frankee’s music video got a lot of plays on many different music channels which are free to watch like TMF which is a music channel free to watch, you don’t need sky to watch which helped Frankee’s song go number 1.

To Create Synergy with Media Texts Synergy is creating tie ins between media sectors which can help promote the different aspects involved for example a common example would be singers having a specific song for a film. So it is to raise awareness of both sectors involved and may allow artists to be involved in different sectors within the media industry. An example of a tie in is Beyonce’s Song ‘Listen’ which ties in with the film she is in called ‘Dream Girls’. This is a good example of a tie in because it aloud because it get noticed in different media sectors than just singing and it also raised awareness of both sectors. The film ‘Dream Girls’

The Single Listen

The image to the left shows Frankee’s song going to number one as a response to a pervious song that charted at number 1. This shows a different kind of tie in but an affective one because it made Frankee’s song go to number 1 in more than 1 country.

To Create Synergy with Media Texts The tie in Frankee used is different to other media texts Frankee done a response to a song from Eamon called ‘Fuck It’ the song from Eamon went straight to number 1 in the UK and in other countries, it was at number 1 for four weeks until Frankee knocked him on the top spot. Frankee may of used that song to promote herself because she knew Eamon’s song was a complete success she thought her song would follow up the same and which it did. Frankee also used this way of tying in with different music video to promote herself as an artist because this was her first song released as ‘Frankee’ and it was also the single release for her up and coming album. Frankee lied and said that her response was to his song because he was singing about her this immediately made the press get involved which made her more famous. It was said after her song charted to number 1that it was false she was not in a relationship with Eamon and his song ‘Fuck It’ was not about her. Below shows both single covers by Eamon and Frankee as you can see Frankee copied his image.

Eamon’s single Fuck It

Frankee’s single F.U.R.B

Frankee uses a certain tie in to make her music video more known. The tie in that made her music video ‘Fuck You Right Back’ go to number 1 was the first song by Eamon ‘Fuck It’. Frankee used a song which was already released and at number 1 position in The UK and down a response song to it.

To Be Art In There Own Right Many artists care about the overall presentation of their music videos, many artists want their music video’s to be memorable so they use art and graphics in their music video to make the video more engaging and fun to watch. These music video’s tend to be the most popular because they are more fun to watch because the video uses a great deal of camera use, with the shot types and the affects. The image to the right shows a good example of an artist who is an art in there own right; Lady Gaga makes her video’s very interesting which is what makes her video’s become so popular whereas Frankee does not have any specific art or anything imaginative in her music video this could be why she did not receive as many views as Lady Gaga. Comparing Lady Gag’s music video it is clear what the viewers will prefer to watch Frankee’s music video has a simple story line where as Lady Gaga’s video has a story line but uses creative ways to show the story line through dance and acting. The two print screens show the difference between each videos on how many views the each received. It is clear Lady Gaga received more because of the use of creativity

To Be Art In There Own Right Frankee may not of wanted to have any art whether its graphics or green screen because her main intension of this music video was to get across her side of the story and her point of view. The main point of Frankee's music video was to have a deep meaning and concentrate on the story however although the video focuses on getting the meaning across it still uses certain aspect which make the video more catchy. I personally feel Frankee made her music video like this to let young girls relate to it so it has that extra bit of a meaning. Here are a few things Frankee uses in her video to make it entertaining:

Graphics to illustrate

Flashbacks of happy relationships Shots as if it was a camera shot

All these different techniques used in Frankee’s music video help make it more entertaining although her music video does not contain the kind of art Lady Gaga uses she still made her video memorable through the use of the plain techniques and storyline.

Music Video Outlets; Part 2 -Mainstream TV -Music channels -Direct CD/DVD -Streaming Websites -Artist website -Streaming downloads -Illegal downloads -Record Label

Mainstream TV Mainstream TV is the most common outlet were people can watch music videos easy because it is free of charge and it is accessible to everyone. Also by watching music videos on mainstream TV They tend to show all types of music genres they don’t favour a specific genre of music. The channels are also well known by everyone which means there would be a wider audience watching the music videos they release. The main disadvantage of mainstream TV Is your music video is only played for a certain amount of time this shows that Frankee’s song did not get play’s for a long time which means if it did it could have been more successful. A good example of an artists that used a popular mainstream TV programme to launch their music is JLS, they performed on one of the most known reality TV show called X Factor. They used this to promote their new song and new album. This helped them get their music video to number one and promote their song. However Frankee did not appear on a popular mainstream TV Like JLS she performed on a reality as a guess and the show was called bnn this programme is not as established as X factor which is why her career did not take off as much as JLS. The performance she done was mainly to promote her single not her album which showed that her album failed to chart. The video’s show that JLS have more views because X factor is more known. Frankee has 14,864 whereas JLS have 95,429 which clearly shows to get your music known your need to go on the best TV Shows.

Direct CD/DVD Special Edition Many artists release DVD’s with their music videos on it to get more promotion. The main reason artists do these special releases of these DVD’s is because they know their fans will buy it because they put backstage footage and rehearsal footage that the viewers can only see if they buy the DVD. This is good because all the footage they put on the DVD cannot be seen on the internet or TV. However because the DVD has footage on it that cannot be watched unless you buy the DVD it will cost a bit more than just buying the single. Some viewers may think there is not point buying the DVD when they can just wait for it to go on YouTube. Frankee did not release any special edition CD’s or DVD’s this may be because she was still starting in her music career and she wasn’t sure if she was staying with her record labels but if she did her music would have sol more and she would have been more known. Artists that used this concept to build their salary and fans was JLS they have released a DVD which shows make stage footage of their tour and shows them performing all their songs this helps JLS to extend their salary and also helps them become more known as an established boy band. By the band releasing a DVD with their shows will help them sell tickets for their up and coming tour.

Streaming Websites Streaming website are very popular because you can watch old music video’s as well as new music video. YouTube also allows you to watch music videos from unknown artists that are rising whereas music channels apart from Channel AKA don’t play unknown artists music videos for example Bluely Robinson is an up and coming artist who was found through YouTube. YouTube helps to find new artists and help established artists to promote their music. Bluely Robinson got signed from Sony after they saw his video’s on YouTube, this is also how Frankee made her song so known. Frankee has her own YouTube account which is where she posts her new music and video’s and people watch it and like it then they re-post it. YouTube. Frankee used YouTube to help her expand her popularity because YouTube is a free website to watch video and the video are always on there for people to watch.

Artists Website Artists have their own websites so they can post blogs and videos directly to their fans this is a good way of getting them more known. By having your own website as an artist is allows you to share whatever information you want to. A website for an artist is good because it’s where they can post all of the release dates for singles/albums and it also gives them a chance to sell their own stuff within their brand. Frankee does not have an official website for her fans she has to pages one on Facebook and one on Famtic.com these two websites are not that good for her fans because they both mean you need a login to see them where as an artist website like Bluey Robinson’s website see right of page is easily accessible you don't need a login and it is also easy to find where as Frankee’s two websites are more hard to find. Bluey Robinsons website includes a;; his tracks, all information and up and coming events whereas Frankee’s websites do not promote her as an artist they mainly talk about what she does and info about her. This shows that for an artist to be more known they need a personal website. Frankee may not have made herself a specific website because she switched record labels and perhaps she wasn’t sure that her music career would be her only career. Bluey’s Robinson shows that he is promoting his new song ‘coming back’ where as Frankee’s website shoe bio’s of her and logins. This shows that Bluey Robinson’s website is more efficient than Frankee’s.

Download (illegally) One of the ways many people download their music now is illegally this is bad for the Artists and Record labels because they are not selling enough records because people are downloading it for free instead of paying. The illegal downloads are rising because it is easy to access and people can get whatever song and video’s they want for free instead of paying for them. Towards the left is an example of an illegal website that allows viewers to download their music for free. This link shows that people can download Frankee’s song ‘Fuck you right back’ is on this website for free download this is a disadvantage for her because it means viewers would perform to get her song for free than paying for it which means she will have a salary lose. This may be the reason that her album failed to chart because people decided to download it rather than buy it. The image to the left shows that Frankee’s album to buy cost $14.99 which is expensive to an album that is over 5 years old this is why many people download music illegally because its free of cost.

Record Label and Branches Within Frankee’s career she was with two record labels she was with Marro records and then left them for Big management records were she was then dropped after not getting her single to number 1. Marro records was the main record label she was with. Marro records are also the record company that produced her song ‘Fuck You Right Back’ which got to number one. Marro Records is a record company label that produces country/pop super stars. Marro Records are in partnership with many major Hollywood studios and networks. Marro Records clients include NOVATOR PARTNERS LLP and GRF ENTERTAINMENT . Marro Records is located in the offices of The Weinstein Co. Marro Records also produce films and programmes as well as music. Marro Records is based upon the entire entertainment industry.
