TAKING THE REINS ON OUR NUTRITION By Morgan Mooney-Jones “How did mom do this?!” I ask myself, standing hopeless in a Kroger grocery isle which, through the course of ten minutes, has somehow become an ocean— a sea of choices. Having decided to fore go my university meal plan my sophomore year of college, I quickly gain a deepened gratitude for my mother’s cooking and provision over my nutrition all these years. Now it’s in my hands. With health care currently a sizzling hot

button on the nation’s political scene, today it is more important than ever to proactively take our nutrition seriously. Ideally the more time spent investing in planning healthy nutrition, the less time will be spent in the doctor’s office through the years. I can’t directly control decisions on government healthcare, but I can control the kind on my plate. I call it homegrown healthcare. These days, I have a better handle on my grocery shopping and related decision making, though I will always be learning. But the key there is: always learning. For me, still a college student on a tight budget, taking my healthcare into my own hands has meant making baby steps towards healthier foods as I am financially able. These include shopping for locally grown goods at farmer’s markets, making tweaks in my grocery lists (ie. weaning off my favorite cinnamon sugar raisin bagels in favor of 100% whole wheat bagels, developing a taste for almond milk, watching out for our old friend high fructose corn syrup), always evaluating and taking into account the origin and production of my food.

PIRASTRO’S EVAH PIRAZZI STRINGS IMPRESS By Morgan Jones A violinist for over 15 years, I’ve played a lot of sour notes, messed up too many solo’s, and worn out quite a few strings. In doing so, I’ve become familiar with the variety of sounds a violin can produce with different strings, and have developed an acute taste for a specific sound quality that best fits my playing style and instrument. I found this quality abundant in Pirastro’s Evah Pirazzi strings, known for their outstanding playability, exceptional response in any dynamic, rich complex sound, and exceptional projection.

BACKPACKING IN

A FALSE ALARM By Morgan Jones This past summer, my family and I embarked on what we thought would be a normal three day backpacking trip. Along with us for the first time, we brought a live GPS tracking device called Spot Connect through which we could send out pre-programmed messages to loved ones at home to either reassure them of our safety or to report an emergency. The trip was beautiful. We summited Lake Fork trail in the Beartooth Mountain range, then hiked back to our base camp at Heart Lake for our second evening beneath the stars. “MOONEY! MOONEY!” I awaken in my tent, startled and confused. Flashing lights. Someone is shouting our name. The voices come closer. Unbenownst to us, a GPS message we thought was “Safe and sound!” was scrambed in the GPS data base and actually sent out the following message earlier that day: “Non-life threatening injury. Evacuation help requested.” An 8 mile hike in the dead of night and hours later, two brave Montana State Rangers found us— not in dire need, but sleepily, blissfully ignorant of our horrible mistake!

THINK TWICE BEFORE USING YOUR GPS TRACKING DEVICE

étude: 1. a musical composition, usually instrumental, intended mainly for the practice of some point of technique. If you’ve ever been a musician at some point in your life or are at least familiar with musicianship, you understand the significance of an étude...practice, practice, practice! Perhaps you even cringe. When I think back on my prime days as an aspiring violinist, the daily discipline was difficult. Though these musical compositions may be tough to tackle, their impact on one’s technique and musical skill is monumental. Through the years I’ve found there is a beauty to be appreciated in the meticulous rhythmic process of focused practice that produces even more stellar outcomes. This concept of an étude also applies perfectly to design. This publication was created in that spirit—celebrating the process of design and the development of thoughts, ideas and interests. This is the inaugural volume of Étude Magazine. I hope that you grow to love and appreciate the process of practicing, learning, and creating.
