EDITOR’S LETTER

December WELCOME TO THE

ISSUE

Hello and welcome to the December issue of the Moreton Hall Directory. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! So, how are your preparations going? I say it every year, but I’m determined to be all ready well in time for the big day, it’d be nice to relax a bit on Christmas Eve rather than still wrapping presents at midnight! Maybe I’ll even treat myself to a cheeky ‘Frosty Night’ Cocktail – recipe on page 39! Let’s face it, most of us over indulge over the holiday, so if your jeans are feeling a bit on the snug side, why not enter our crossword competition on page 46 where you can win a FREE training session with PT Joe to kick start your healthy new year! Well, the thick jumpers are finally out and the heating is on full blast, it is definitely feeling like Winter – but, if you still want to look fab this season, you could try a poncho, there’s a style and pattern to suit everyone, have a look at page 58 for some ideas. Whether you are having a busy Christmas or just enjoying a quiet one this year, we would like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! And we’ll see will see you in January!

Vandalism I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween, except those of us whose houses were pelted with eggs, and the mess left on Ten Acre Field. The same mindless youths who delight in getting drunk and inhaling Nitro Oxide from balloons, which is very dangerous and can be fatal. Hopefully they will grow out of it before there is a fatality. Here’s a picture of the Nitro Oxide gas holders they use.

PREMIUM BONDS

Did you know that there is £47 million of prize money not claimed laying in the coffers of Premium Bonds, There is no time scale to claim unlike the Lotto. In the old days, mums, dads and grandparents used to buy the odd bond as a gift for a child and probably there are many of these still languishing in drawers never been looked at, you could be worth a lot of money! Check out your old bonds you never know. That said, I have had some since 1976 and never won a penny until this year when I won £25 twice.

Some of you may have noticed the fencing around the football field on Heldhaw Road has been completed and a gate put at the entrance to the car park to prevent any travellers from setting up camp. A very good job, and well done St Edmundsbury borough council, however, someone has taken the time to rip one of the gates off. This has now been sent off for repair and will be replaced as soon as possible. We are also have some fencing put up around Ponders Grove on the Barton’s another place the travellers like to camp, hopefully this will be completed very soon.

AWARDS

Not all of our youngsters are hell bent on causing problems on our estate, we have had two who were recommended for young citizen of the year and they attended the awards ceremony on the 17th November. Clementine Key and Ben Rogers were nominated for their work in getting the Skate Park project off the ground and encouraging youth to attend the youth club. Another award nominee was Mr Terry Buckle and Pam Buckle for their service to fostering, they have fostered 60 children over the past 30 years, well done both of you.

Burglaries

Over the past two months there have been a spate of burglaries on our estate, one house was targeted twice in a year. The owners lost £20,000 in the first raid, only recovering a motor cycle. Please try and secure your house against these opportunist low life especially as we approach Christmas, you don’t want them enjoying Christmas with your gifts. If possible see about getting a CCTV camera covering the front and the back of your house, these are not very expensive and can be fitted easily, you could also have an intruder light fitted up in your rear garden so when anyone enters it comes on and is a good deterrent. Anything you can do to make your house more secure is a good thing.

There are lots of events happening in Bury this Christmas, a real ice skating rink in December and many other events to help you and your families enjoy the festive season, again a word of caution when shopping keep your purse well hidden and beware of pick pockets. There is another problem, it’s called scamming, some of you may have cards that you just scan across the card machine, well these can also be scanned while in your wallet or purse so be careful with this too. Sadly Christmas is a time when the thieves do their shopping too, but not with their money, but yours.

That’s all for now, until next time take care and have a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year!, Frank Warby DECEMBER 2015 | 09

W hat’s been happening at...

ABBOTS GREEN Community Primary School It has been another busy month for Abbots Green!

And indoors it has been just as much fun too…

This month the children at Abbots Green have continued to acquire new skills in the great outdoors through their OLE sessions!

There is a real buzz of excitement building with every mention of the word “Christmas!”

Each half term every class across the school – from Nursery right through to Year 5 - devotes one day to OLE (Outdoor Learning Experiences.) During this time the whole class heads outside with their teacher to use the school’s outdoor environment as their classroom. Sessions take place whatever the weather and provide us with an opportunity to use our natural surroundings to support the children’s learning. Activities also include taking part in Forest School sessions and carrying out gardening duties. It really is wonderful to witness just how totally engrossed the children can be while they are learning outdoors. The experience stimulates their senses in a completely different way to the classroom and further enhances a variety of skills.

10 | AUGUST 2015

Our Early Years and Key Stage 1 children are busy learning their lines and rehearsing for their Christmas Shows…the sound of singing from the school hall and the classrooms is making us all begin to feel a little festive. We are all very much looking forward to their performances of “Whoops-a-DaisyAngel” and “Baubles” in due course. A very Merry Christmas from us all at Abbots Green!

Dear reader,

Pebbles takes to the wards to make a difference to Margo A senior staff nurse at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is now getting extra help at work and home thanks to a four-legged friend who has become the hospital’s first hearing dog. Margo Harrison realised something was wrong with her hearing around 15 years ago, but tried to carry on as normal until one day a patient told her the fire alarm was going off. She then decided to apply to the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People charity for her own furry friend to help make her home and work life easier. In March, she started working with two-yearold cocker spaniel Pebbles, who has received special training so that she can alert Margo to noises such as alarm clocks, the cooker timer or a knock at the door. Pebbles now joins Margo at work in the hospital’s pre-admission unit, where she acts as a constant reminder to patients to look at Margo when they are talking so that she can read their lips.

to her home since getting Pebbles, while her family no longer have to shout at her to get her attention. “Pebbles and I have built up our sound work training, and she will nudge me with her nose to alert me to noises,” said Margo, who has volunteered with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People for the past nine years. “She is in the process of learning the fire alarm and will have a different signal to practice for that, but is doing brilliantly.

“When my hearing first started to deteriorate, I took lip reading classes and did a sign language course,” said Margo, who lives near Bury St Edmunds and has worked at West Suffolk for 25 years. “I tried to carry on living in the hearing world, but was gradually finding things more difficult, especially as hearing loss is an invisible disability.

“Having Pebbles has made a big difference at work as well – my colleagues adore her and she makes the patients smile, and often helps if people are feeling nervous. She lies by my side in her uniform when I see patients, which also reminds them to look at me when they talk so that I can lip read. Not only does that make my life so much easier, but also means they don’t need to repeat themselves.

“People would be rude to me and think I was ignoring them. Like a lot of people with hearing loss, I gradually stopped doing things and wouldn’t go anywhere on my own. That is when I decided to apply for a hearing dog of my own.”

“In the future I’m planning to take her along to talks so that she can help me to raise awareness about the great work the charity does. I also hope she will help me explain to people who are on the waiting list just what a big difference a hearing dog can make.”

Although Margo is now considered profoundly deaf, she hasn’t missed a visitor

December in the woods

D

ecember finds Woodland Ways volunteers spreading wood chips on the path through Home Covert. A simple task but one which helps the people who use the path, particularly dog walkers. The path can easily become overgrown and almost invisible, such a carpet of leaves this autumn, walking through the covert is like walking on a mattress! Later in winter a mudbath is prevented by the surfacing of wood chips. Look up while the trees are bare and you might spot some mistletoe. There is some in one or two locations around Bury St Edmunds. This strange, semi-parasitic plant grows on the branches of apple trees for preference, but also on lime, poplar, hawthorn, blackthorn and rowan. It relies on its host tree for water and minerals but can use sunlight to photosynthesise via its leaves and stems. You can often see a mistletoe plant, green and flourishing, suspended in a bare, black winter tree. Mistle thrushes and blue tits eat the white fruits, the former bird may be the origin of the name, and a mistle thrush will

furiously protect its own clump of mistletoe, fighting off other birds. There are certainly blue tits in and around Home Covert, and if you see a mistle thrush you are very lucky, for these are now rare and precious. Mistletoe was our foremost Christmas decoration until the nineteenth century, when, of course, Christmas trees arrived. Just inside the gate into Home Covert stands a holly, dark green, glossy and healthy when all around is dormant. Hollies can live for up to three hundred years and this one dates back to the days when this was a wood on the farm. It used to be considered lucky to plant a holly as it gives protection from a lightning strike, now science has proven that the spikes on the leaves can act as tiny electricity conductors, so there was truth in the old belief. One ancient source lists holly as a bringer of domestic happiness and enchantment, so perhaps we should all have some in our homes over the Christmas period.

Join us at Woodland Ways... Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. Rachels Mobile Hairdressing

Fully qualified stylist providing a top quality hairdressing service in the comfort of your own home. Our speaker for November was Helen Smith who gave a talk on the History of the Chadacre Agricultural Trust. This was formerly The Chadacre Agricultural Institute and was one of the first agricultural education courses in the UK. It was founded by the first Earl of Iveagh in 1920, whose experience of farming on the Elveden Estate had convinced him of the need for sound practical training for people working in agriculture. These days it provides assistance with fees, grants, research projects and education of the public. We live in an agricultural area and it was interesting to hear how farming methods had changed in East Anglia since medieval times. In those days corn was spread by hand. These changes coincided with the Industrial Revolution and population increase. The main areas of change were the 4 crop rotation system, the seed drill, mechanisation, selective animal breeding and using chemical fertilisers. There have been times of food shortages especially during the wars. Nowadays there is fierce competition from other countries. There was an update on WI business and we were pleased to be introduced to Angela Green our WI Advisor.

Welcome to the 19th hole, a place for golf tips, reviews and everything golf related.

Welcome back, well it’s that time of the year again… IT’S CHRISTMAS!! Christmas is the time of year to enjoy time with family, and for us golfers to odd round in the less than perfect conditions. So if you’re buying presents for a golfer this Christmas or you are a golfer in need of ideas to tell your family. Here are five top ideas to help improve and assist you on course in 2016.

Golfing Items for Christmas

Golfing Winter Mittens Weathers Mitts are the best way to keep your hands warm this winter. Coming with a fleece linned inner that gives amazing comfort and warmth. MacWet Rain Gloves The ‘all grip, no slip’ glove for wet weather conditions! The MacWet Mesh Golf Rain Glove is designed using MacWet’s unique Aquatec fabric, which responds to moisture and climate change, giving maximum grip, sensitivity, feel and comfort in wet weather conditions. Yardage Device These devices in my opinion speed up rounds of golf, they give the golfer instant feedback for the distance to the front, middle and back of the greens, and also on some products to hazards as well. There are so many on the market however I have only used Bushnell products and would highly recommend this brand. Bobble Hat A bobble hat is the perfect winter headwear offering protection from cold with thermal insulation. This item will make sure your looking stylish on the course this winter. Lessons with a PGA Professional Finally if you feel either yourself or a member of your family could benefit from some guidance on their golf game then maybe some lessons would insure that there are more positive golfing stories in 2016. Please contact myself for voucher information – adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk

Coaches Corner - Master the downhill chip shots. We have all done it, hit a great shot and ended up long of your target leaving yourself a tricky downhill chip shot. Below are a few areas to consider next time your faced with this shot. Landing Area - Focus on a spot The ball will naturally run down the slope away from you, so it’s essential that ball lands in an area that will allow for this run-out. This area will often be the closest point to you but on the putting surface. Make sure you make this a zone, as hitting a single spot is hard and will add pressure to the shot. Use loft to generate spin on landing Normally I would recommend a straight faced club that doesn’t launch high for a running shot. This shot however is better being played with more loft, this allows you to be more positive through impact. This gives you the best chance of imparting spin from a higher trajectory, allowing the elevation to help slow the speed at which the ball runs out. Practice like you play Making sure you have the correct tempo for this shot is hard, so make sure your practice swings are completed at the same intensity as you’re going to need hit of landing area and allow you get this shot to finish close. I hope this helps next time you’re faced with this style of shot on the course, these areas can be used for other aspects of your short game. The short game needs lots of practice and is often over looked by golfers but time spent on this area will improve your game. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and thank you all for reading all year. If there is areas that you would like me to look at in 2016 please feel free to contact me on the email below. Quote MHD for £5 off your first golf lesson with myself.

Nicola Delglyn Osteomyologist Physical & Nutritional Therapy Hello again!

I can’t believe it is December already and if you’re household is like mine, there is great excitement waiting for the big chap to visit and bring an array of goodies for those of us who have been good this year. Christmas Carol service at school, seeing the excitement in the children’s eyes as we put up the decorations that festoon the whole house, are for me, what Christmas is all about. However, I also find this time of year a stressful one, not only considering the money that will be spent but trying to create this “wonderful Christmas” for everyone and providing an exquisite meal on Christmas Day. It doesn’t end there, organizing family visits, shopping for gifts for the whole family and the dreaded supermarket shop for the delights we will consume within a 24 hour period. Over the years I’ve managed to get a little routine together that helps me stay sane, somewhat relaxed and able to enjoy the festive season with the children and family. I’ve popped them here for you and some ideas of how you can stay healthy and well nourished throughout the festive season. Remember good healthy food is a great way to ensure you boost your immune system. Don’t let the festive season get you down: follow the tips and advice you find here, relax and enjoy yourself. Plan Ahead: Start making a list of things you need to do for Christmas early for example, shopping, food and presents, decorations, seating plans or travel arrangements. Shop Online: Although shopping locally has many advantages, High Street shopping just before Christmas can be particularly stressful, often cold and wet (in the UK anyway) and with hundreds of other stressed people trying to find the ‘perfect’ gift. Do your food shopping online too and have it delivered directly to your door. Remember to book your delivery slot early though as the prime delivery slots may well be booked early. Christmas Cards: Start writing your Christmas cards early too! Mid-November is a good time to start. Know When to Stop: Decide when you will stop your Christmas preparations and start to relax and enjoy the holiday. Work towards and try to stick to this goal, even if it is in the late afternoon on Christmas Eve. Remember that Christmas is your holiday too. Keep Calm: Play some relaxing music, perhaps seasonal carols, and burn some scented candles, incense or aromatherapy oil. Take a relaxing hot bath to unwind.

24 | DECEMBER 2015

Treatments to beat pain for Have decaffeinated coffee or herbal tea: When your body is under stress it produces cortisol which prepares you for ‘fight or flight’ situations. Caffeine in coffee and tea does too. Practice Breathing: When we’re stressed our heart beat increases and our breathing shallows, it’s all part of the fight or flight reaction. Work on reversing this process and take time to breathe deeply. Breathe in deeply through your nose, hold for 15 or 20 seconds and then breathe slowly out through your mouth, repeat for a few minutes to instantly help reduce stressful feelings. Have a ‘Great Escape’ Plan: A good idea to have some preplanned excuses to escape from proceedings if they get too stressful. Be imaginative and use things such as leaving the room to make a phone-call to a friend or perhaps checking on a neighbour. Just by having planned a couple of escape routes you’ll probably feel less stressed anyway but actually leaving the situation, even for 10 minutes, will help clear your mind and relax you. Make Time for Exercise: Christmas is, for many, a time of excessive eating and drinking and exercise can be easily overlooked. Diets are particularly popular in January! Exercise is a great way to reduce stress as it burns off hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and helps produce mood-enhancing endorphins. Try going for a walk after dinner as the fresh air and exercise will lift your mood and make you feel better. Avoid Excessive Alcohol: Most de-stressing articles will tell you to avoid alcohol altogether but, let’s be realistic, it is Christmas! However, do avoid excessive alcohol as it dehydrates your body and makes your liver work overtime to process it. Drink as much water as alcohol as this will help you to stay hydrated, feel better and therefore cope better with stressful situations. You’ll also feel better on Boxing Day. Here are 8 tips to lighten your Christmas dinner: DON’T PUT BREAD ON THE TABLE: Most people tend to use bread as a pre-dinner appetiser. The problem with this is that we tend to eat too much of it, filling us up and adding extra calories. Instead I tend to use lettuce leaves, personally I like romaine because it is crisp and refreshing and a very good source of dietary fiber, manganese, potassium, biotin, vitamin B1, copper, iron, and vitamin C. It is also a good source of vitamin B2, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, phosphorus, chromium, magnesium, calcium, and pantothenic acid. How great is that, you can use it to wrap spinach, pate or smoked salmon for a great family appetiser. If really like bread then why not try rye bread or slice a slice of bread into 2 slices

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Physical & Nutritional Therapy adults, children & athletes then toast it lightly. A very thin slice of toast is tasty with with turkey pate or smoked salmon and spinach as a festive starter. SLICE THE TURKEY INTO APPROPRIATE SIZES: Turkey is usually the meat of choice for Christmas dinner and it is a healthy choice, just look at the benefits. It is a great source of protein, has less calories than red meat and provides iron, zinc, potassium and phosphorus. It is also a good source of vitamin B6 and niacin, which are both essential for the body’s energy production. Turkey also helps to lower cholesterol levels, is low GI and can help keep insulin levels stable. It contains the amino acid tryptophan, which produces serotonin and plays an important role in strengthening the immune system. It is also a source of selenium, which is essential for thyroid function. Slice the turkey into appropriate portion sizes before serving it’s a indirect trick to discourage overeating and I’m sure your guests would appreciate having their food on their plate ready to eat. LIGHTEN YOUR GRAVY: Most people now use gravy mixes to accompany their turkey. Whilst these are convenient, adding spoon after spoon can quickly lead to lots of additional calories. Instead try making a healthy, natural turkey gravy. Take the bag of giblets that came with the turkey, chop an onion and some carrots, plus any other vegetables you desire and add them to a large pot of water. Turn up the heat and let them simmer in the pot for about an hour. After an hour, drain the turkey stock into a jug or bowl. When the turkey is cooked add the juices from the bottom of the roasting tray to this stock mix. To thicken the gravy, add a small amount of whole grain flour or corn flour to the mix. If you want you can even add pepper and other spices until the desired taste is achieved. This natural turkey gravy will probably taste even better than a gravy mix and be a lot healthier too. PILE ON THE VEGETABLES: This is my favourite and I always have loads of vegetables on my plate. Vegetables are easy to prepare and go well with turkey. However, the biggest plus point is that they’re very good for you providing lots of vitamins and fibre with very few calories. There are plenty of different choices when it comes to vegetables. You can get out the steamer and use it to prepare peas, leeks, red cabbage, roasted parsnips, broccoli, carrots, sprouts and any other vegetables you can think of. Alternatively, you can chop up some onions, garlic, pepper or mushrooms and roast them with the turkey. Whichever vegetables you choose loading up the Christmas table with them is sure to stop people overindulging on turkey and stuffing. Why not try a glaze of honey, mustard and herbs to add flavour to

simple steamed vegetables – an easy, delicious, low fat and healthy addition to the table. USE SMALLER PLATES: If you provide people with smaller plates they cannot fit as much food on them. Therefore, the chances of you and your guests overeating are significantly reduced. PUT WATER ON THE TABLE: Water does not contain any calories and is essential for keeping your body properly hydrated. Put a couple of jugs of chilled water on the table and keep them topped up throughout the Christmas meal. This will ensure that you always have a glass of water at hand should you desire it. KEEP FIZZY DRINKS AWAY FROM THE TABLE: Fizzy drinks are often full of sugar and chemicals. However, you are likely to have some guests who want to drink them. As a compromise keep them away from the main dinner table. There will still be available to people who want to drink them but by keeping them away from the table you and your guests will be less likely to keep the glasses topped up with these calorie heavy drinks. MAKE FRUIT PART OF YOUR DESSERT: Dessert is often the most calorie laden part of the Christmas meal with cheesecakes, chocolate logs, Christmas pudding, mince pies and more. However, if you use fruit then the dessert can be a much lighter part of your Christmas dinner. Blueberries and natural yoghurt are a simple, tasty, sweet treat which take minutes to prepare. Alternatively, you could make a fruit salad for all your guests. Chop up a some apple, banana, oranges, pineapple mango and mix it with some fresh fruit juice in a large bowl. Put this bowl in the fridge overnight. You don’t have to force these fruit based desserts on your guests but making them one of the choices at the table is a step in the right direction.

Ultimately, Have Fun! Remember Christmas is

one day and Christmas Dinner is just one meal. It’s your Christmas too so try to relax and have fun, laugh and be merry. If you do find others around you difficult then try to rise above the situation. If things don’t go to plan try not to worry too much, instead laugh about them and make them into fun memories that you can talk about during Christmases to come. “Remember that time Mum set fire to the sprouts!”

Have a great, stress-free and healthy Christmas break – see you next year!

Gluten-free?...

A gluten-free diet may be a fashionable way to stay healthy or even maybe lose weight, but for some people – those with gluten intolerance – it is the only way to control their bodies’ allergic reaction to gluten. Dieticians do not know the exact cause of gluten intolerance but it is often hereditary. People with gluten intolerance need to give their diet a complete overhaul and eliminate gluten from their diet. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye, and is commonly used as a stabiliser, thickener and emulsifier in processed foods. Being on a glutenfree diet means removing a number of unhealthy and processed foods from your diet; foods such as breads, pastas, pizzas, cookies and desserts such as cakes, pies and muffins.

What you need to know about gluten intolerance Gluten intolerance, also known as coeliac disease, is a digestive disorder in which the inner lining of the small intestine is destroyed by the body’s allergic reaction to foods containing gluten. Symptoms of gluten intolerance Gluten intolerance symptoms vary from mild to serious. They include: l Diarrhoea l Abdominal pain l Bloating and gas l Weight loss l Stomach upset l Fatigue and weakness l Slow growth rate (children) l Foul-smelling stools Some symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas and bloating may be caused by digestive problems and not gluten intolerance, so it is important to get this condition properly diagnosed. 36 | DECEMBER 2015

Treatment for gluten intolerance There is no cure for gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. A gluten-free diet is the only effective treatment. Go for a blood test to determine if you are really allergic to gluten before going on a gluten-free diet. Consult a dietitian who will carry out a nutritional assessment and then devise a proper meal plan suitable for you.

Complications of gluten intolerance People suffering from gluten intolerance or coeliac disease may suffer from malnutrition and small bowel ulcers. They also have a higher risk of developing gastrointestinal cancers. Look out for signs of anaemia, recurring weight loss and abdominal pain as these may suggest complications of the disease. 8 diet tips to manage gluten intolerance l Avoid all products containing wheat, rye and barley (e.g. breads, pastas). l Avoid baked foods (e.g. pies, cakes, cookies). l Read food labels carefully and avoid foods with dextrin, emulsifiers, stabilisers, corn starch, malt and modified wheat starch. l Check all seasonings, thickeners and marinades for gluten-containing additives. l Avoid processed foods and meats (e.g. luncheon meats, salad dressings, vegetarian mock meats, soup stocks). l Eat more whole grains – rice, white rice, millet, buckwheat, , and beans, seeds and nuts. l Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables. l Choose fresh meats, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.

At the Greyhound, we have a number of dishes suitable for a Gluten-free diet including gluten free Yorkshire puddings & gravy, gluten free beer battered fish and many of our dishes can be adapted to accommodate your needs. We have also just been awarded 5 stars from EHO.

Out with the old BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

E

very house has its breaking point – an optimum capacity. I’m talking about the moment at which you become aware you have far too much ‘stuff’. The thing is it all happens very slowly and subtly, creeping up on you, like a cat stalking its prey. Then one day, you look around you, and rather like that startled mouse, out of the blue you realise you have a problem. The most important part is that you have identified there is an issue. Sometimes, in all honesty, this may be 10 years too late. But, for many of us it’s about once a year we get this moment of clarity, and we have time to act before it becomes too much of an overwhelming job. Where to start? Well, the kids have to stay (so I am told…), so working back from that, it’s the mountains of

54 | DECEMBER 2015

clothes they seem to come with that is my primary target. Selling unwanted, but good condition, items can be surprisingly hard. Put them on a local online selling site for 50p each and people email you asking “what sort of condition are they in?”, and “would you take 40p?” and so on. It’s hardly worth the effort, but I am eager for them to get reused. Sometimes we find an outlet for a whole bag of clothes, maybe a niece or nephew, or a friend from the playground with a younger sibling. When this happens I become a little bit over excited, struggling to stop myself from delivering a dozen bin bags full of stuff to them the next day. Sadly, the majority has gone in the clothes bags that sit in the blue wheelie bins. This collection service is for people like me. People who dislike the other ‘charitable’

collection bags which come through the door. You know, the ones that say in almost unreadable small print “…we promise to give 5p for every 100 tons of clothes collected to…”. To be honest, if it’s out of my house/garage, and being reused in some way then I’m happy. The strange thing is we are incredibly restrained in terms of what we buy. I would consider ourselves at the very bottom of the scale, with the majority of parents buying (or being given) far more clothes than us. I just hate to think what their clothes mountain looks like. I just hope those trusses in the loft are able to handle the tonnage. So, the clear out is going well. Two things are for certain. We definitely do not need any small baby clothes… ever again, and this time next year we’ll have another room full of kids clothes to dispose of.

Get the look.. It’s often the most unlikely of trend you end up liking and wearing the most – and for us this season, that trend is definitely the poncho. They first cropped up about 10 years ago – high neck and heavily fringed – but their resurgence can be largely thanked to a stylish makeover. The current poncho incarnation has much more of a cape feel to it and has been a quick hit with the street style set. This is a must have for your winter wardrobe...

Hi!

Eek, I’m so excited! By the time you’re reading this I am probably 11! Happy birthday to me, hope you are counting down for Christmas. Oh, but before I go, hello Mrs Harvey!

molly xx

RABBITS

Another thing to get me super excited is that we have just got rabbits! One is called ‘Rascal’ and the other is called ‘Jeffery’. They are both black little fluff balls, that were born in July. Their breed is Netherland Dwarf so they should stay quite small. Already we can see that Jeffery is going to be the bigger out of the two. The reason Rascal is called that is because he used to escape out of his hutch, and the reason Jeffery got his name is simply because my brother thinks

COCA-COLA TRUCK

he looks like a Jeffery! Even though we have only had them a short time, we can see their personalities emerging. Rascal loves his cuddles and is more happier being picked up out of the hutch but is also quite a curious bunny and likes to explore new places. Jeffery loves his food and is the first to try anything new to eat. He also enjoys cuddles but isn’t so keen on being picked up. I love watching them hop around and they always come back to me for cuddles and attention! Now what to buy them for Christmas?!?!

PANTO

I don’t really know much about the Coca-Cola truck and I don’t really drink coke but one thing I do know is that when I see the Coca-Cola truck advert I know that Christmas is just around the corner. This year on Thursday 10th of December, I am heading to the Arc after school to see the real truck. Maybe see you there!

Every year in December I go to the panto with my family and the lovely Proctors, it is a little family tradition! In previous years I’ve seen Cinderella and Rapunzel but this year the Theatre Royal in Bury is showing Jack and the Bean Stalk. We always have a good laugh and give our names to the people so that we get a shout out in the interval. Better get my Christmas jumper ready! DECEMBER 2015 | 61

PAULS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Winter Beauty Honeysuckle What to do in your garden in December

Winter Beauty’ is a good choice if you want a winter flowering honeysuckle, with fragrant white flowers that appear in late winter and early spring. It makes an attractive spreading deciduous shrub that will fill the garden with its rich scent. They tolerate shade, but they flower best in full sun. It can also be trained against a wall. Easy to maintain and features thousands of tiny blooms which will last from winter to spring. If you know someone who has one then take a cutting in the summer. Ideal for use to fill a gap in the border in a cottage garden or as a hedge.

Happy Christmas to all gardeners. Perhaps you have a relative who is a gardener in your family. There are many welcome gifts for a gardener and here are a few tips to consider. • A thermal hat really helps to keep the warmth in

when working outside.

• It is worth looking at buying a range of gloves to

include the thin insulated gloves and to wear over the top the pvc hardwearing gloves. The latter not only help protect your hands when dealing with thorns but also the material keeps your hands dry especially useful in wet winter weather.

Glasswells Raises Funds for Hearing Dogs Charity Glasswells held a charity cake stall at their Warehouse Sale in October and raised £160.00 for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Charity. Staff and their families and friends baked and donated cakes for the charity stall, which proved very popular with Warehouse Sale Customers and Glasswells’ staff. The money raised will be used to sponsor Hearing Dog Puppy, Ned, a black Labrador, in his training for a year.

We support each hearing dog partnership for their lifetime to ensure that the hearing dog and deaf person remain healthy and happy together. The Charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of others to continue its important work”.

CHURCH NEWS

Christ Church

I

t is not long now! Christmas will soon be upon us. Already the church is filled with Carol Services and Concerts. Please see the posters for details. Once again we will be welcoming over two thousand people who will attend at different times throughout December to enjoy the festival of the Christ Child. It is comforting to know in the course of twelve months, that 85% of the population will come to church at least once, and many will come frequently, during the festival of Christmas. Far from all the negative publicity, the Christian message is still at the heart of the nation and at this time of year it warms many hearts in many different situations. What is the Christmas message exactly? In simple terms it is the story of how a young woman finds herself pregnant with God’s child. Her husband to be, who should have divorced her privately, decides to stand by his young bride no matter what. Compelled by an overseas authority he takes her on a perilous journey near to the capital city. Unable to find accommodation, eventually they

find a place to rest and she gives birth in dreadful surroundings. They are then miraculously supported by the poorest of people, the shepherds, and then the richest of people, the kings. News of the wonderful child is not accepted gladly by all. The local king, Herod, is so outraged he commits an act of genocide against all the young boys in the town of Bethlehem. Fleeing for their lives the new family become refugees in a foreign land and only return home years later. What is the central Christmas story? It is a story of faithfulness and understanding, a story of Mary and Joseph rising above huge adversity. It is about the wisest and richest people in the world realising the significance through their studies. It is about the revelation to the poorest of people, through angels, by God Himself. It is a story of heart-breaking hardship and yet a story of hope and miraculous intervention. As we watch the scenes on our televisions night after night, of pitiful refugees and the cruel atrocities of the ignorant inflicted

MORETON HALL upon the innocent, we can see how the Christmas story is still relevant today. This Christmas story is one of hope, forgiveness, understanding, love and, above all, the triumph of God through the most difficult circumstances. It is my personal experience over the twenty-five years I have been your parish priest, to see this story repeated thousands of times in hundreds of lives. That is what we are celebrating when we gather to sing those carols, eat those mince pies and have fun together. If your hope has been crushed, your optimism quashed and your faith is under stress, then part of the good news is that you can renew it by asking God into your life; either for the first time or for the umpteenth time. As you do, you will find that you take your part in His story and His consolation will come to you. God will intervene in your story and He will make it special and important through His Son.

With every good wish, Yours sincerely,

Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

THE HATEFUL EIGHT Director Quentin Tarantino

tbc

Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern Eight unsavoury travellers are holed up during a snowstorm in Quentin Tarantino’s brilliantly tense western. A blizzard engulfs a Wyoming mountainside stagecoach way station not long after the end of the American Civil War. Seeking shelter, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his valuable fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) arrive with former Union soldier Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and southern renegade Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins). Inside, they find Mexican caretaker Bob (Demian Bichir), hangman Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen) and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As tensions rise among the gnarly, guntoting Old West octet, the question arises: who’s going to make it out alive? Bristling with menace and loaded with characteristically smart, quotable dialogue, Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film is a claustrophobic firecracker of a western, boasting a fantastic A-list cast. It also features the great Ennio Morricone’s first western score in more than 30 years.

WHAT’S ON

THE LADY IN THE VAN

12A

Director Nicolas Hytner Starring Alex Jennings, Frances de la Tour, Jim Broadbent, Maggie Smith, Roger Allam Dame Maggie Smith stars as an eccentric homeless woman who befriends a famous playwright in this heartfelt true-life tale. In the early 1970s, playwright Alan Bennett befriended an elderly homeless woman named Mary Shepherd. In an act of typical kindness, Bennett let the eccentric Shepherd live in a caravan on his driveway, in what he believed would be a short-term arrangement. Fifteen years later, she was still there. The Lady in the Van tells the remarkable true-life story of Alan Bennett and Mary Shepherd, about their unusual and sometime stormy relationship and about her eccentric run-ins with authority. The Queen actor Alex Jennings plays Alan Bennett, with Dame Maggie Smith, in a role far away from her turn as Violet Crawley the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, as the bedraggled Mary Shepherd.

STEVE JOBS Director Danny Boyle

15

Starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels Discover the man behind the image in this candid biopic about computer genius Steve Jobs. From the pen of Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network) comes this riveting and revealing movie about one of the late 20th century’s most towering figures - Apple supremo Steve Jobs. Taking place at three key stages of Jobs’ life, from the unveiling of the first Mac in 1984, through his split from Apple in 1988 to his return in 1998 and the release of the revolutionary iMac, the film provides an intimate study of a man whose private life was often as turbulent as his professional life. Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past) takes on the lead role as Steve Jobs, heading up a starry cast that includes Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen and Jeff Daniels. And in the director’s chair is Slumdog Millionaire Oscar winner Danny Boyle.

WHAT’S ON

The moreton hall community centre Hi all and welcome to the December edition of the Directory! Christmas is nearly upon us and we are busy here at the club trying to organise many events to keep you and the family entertained over the holiday. The Children’s Christmas Party is being held on Sunday 20th December at 2pm in the hall. Disco with Lee and food for each child cooked by our lovely Chef. You need to book your child’s place behind the bar and let us know food options. Payment required when booking. Non members are £5 and Members will have to pay a £3 deposit which is returnable on the day. Due to limited spaces this we felt needed to be done this year due to some members children not turning up on day when we have had to turn away other children wanting to be there. So it will still be FREE to all members kids who come along if booked in. Christmas Eve we will be open from 12pm and having a party with music later that

night, so come along and have a few drinks after the last minute rush of shopping and wrapping presents. See our special opening times over Christmas. Why not pop along Christmas day and see if the chairman is full of Christmas spirit. Our New Years Eve Party is back again by popular demand! Tickets are now on sale behind the Bar at the same price as last year! So come and purchase yours before we sell out! Disco with Lee and Cash Prize Raffle will be held on the night. All welcome. We open 12-5pm New Years Eve, then again at 7pm for the party. We would like to wish everybody who enjoys the community centre throughout the year, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Membership renewals are available from the 1st January. Everybody is welcome to pop in the club room and see us but you may find old friends having a beer. Being a member brings it’s rewards in the form discounts of drinks.
