Letter from the President

Mrs. Charlene Raimondi, Legacy Circle Donor Campaign for Champions

Dear Mariners, It is with an abundance of gratitude and appreciation that we present our 2012-2013 Annual Report in this issue of The Vector. Each year, we report back to our community on our fundraising efforts for the previous fiscal year. While we also take every opportunity to thank you in a variety of more personal ways, this public thank you is important for all readers to see. Each and every gift made to Moreau Catholic High School is valued, vital, and put to great use. We could not be the successful institution we are without the generous support of alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, foundations, businesses, and friends. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, teachers, support staff, and students, thank you for all you do for our school.

This issue of The Vector also highlights some amazing experiences from our alumni—reflections from the past, wisdom gained, challenges overcome, and life lessons learned. The faculty and staff love hearing the stories of our former students, and our current students are inspired by those who went before them. We welcome your story ideas—please contact us and let us know what you are up to! Moreau Catholic also welcomes two new members to our Board of Trustees—Marta Vera Leon and Ed Raney. Marta is a current parent, volunteered as a parent ambassador, and has been a wonderful supporter of Moreau Catholic High School along with her husband Mike. She will be assisting us with our admissions and marketing efforts. Ed is an alumni parent and former Booster Club president. He has been an active member of the finance and institutional advancement committees, as well as the school’s investment subcommittee. He currently chairs the finance committee, and can be found moving the chains at home football games. We are grateful to both Marta and Ed for their service to our school I hope to see more of you this year at Homecoming on Friday, October 25th. Thank you again for the support, prayers and gifts you share with Moreau Catholic High School. We pray for you through the intercession of Blessed Basil Moreau and Saint André Bessette. With gratitude,

Terry Lee President

THE FIELD

Lifelong lessons on the meaning of Hope, Respect and Family

Sportsmanship and showing respect toward our opponents and each other are key Holy Cross values.

—Coach Robert Gatrell receives a pre-game blessing from Fr. Bruce Cecil, CSC.

For almost 50 years, THE FIELD has been the largest classroom at Moreau Catholic. It is where four Holy Cross pillars—Bringing Hope, Educating Hearts and Minds, Being Family and Building Respect— were taught to Mariner athletes by legendary coaches. These same values, proven to be timeless and true, are inspiring a new generation of champions. Today’s young Mariners have the opportunity to acquire life-long hearts and minds skills, endurance and strength by training or competing on the field. Their accomplishments are due in no small part to the family of coaches, Boosters, and parent volunteers who mentor, chauffeur, staff, and fundraise and to the decades of leadership provided by Athletic Director Christine Krisman.

Never lose hope. “Life is hard. Football prepares you for overcoming adversity.” 4

—Coach Andrew Cotter

Being Family: we have each other’s backs—on and off the field.

A resurgent Mariner football team, coached by the patient and persevering Andrew Cotter and the dynamic apostle of BOOM, Rob Gatrell, is bringing hope and excitement to the Mariner community. Running Back Jason Hinton ’15, has contributed buzz to a strong team. In four games, Jason rushed for 1,109 yards on 89 carries with 18 touchdowns. Mariner home games begin with a leisurely trickle, but by sunset the bleachers are filled to capacity with enthusiastic parents, alumni and friends. The surrounding spaces are noisy with greetings, conversations, and hugs. No other space on the Moreau campus has the almost mystical power to draw such a diverse and multi-generational gathering. No other space holds as many collective memories as the field. The sentiment is best summed up by faculty alumnus Dave Baptist ’85, “Good times, good times.” Soon, a new Athletics and Student Activities Complex will replace the worn turf and the dusty track. The Campaign for Champions is in its 4th quarter of fundraising for the high-tech improvements which will include an all-weather track with eight lanes, a field lined for both football and soccer and bleachers for 1,500 spectators. The last football game played on the original turf will take place on October 25th at Moreau’s Homecoming.

Next year, a new era begins.

“You guys are my family.” —Coach Andrew Cotter Being Family, a really Big family! The Athletic Department is assisted by over 1,075 volunteers during the course of a year.

Mariner Girl Power Strength and grace defy gravity on the field Jasmine (Sowunmi) Ogle ’90 Head Coach, Rally Squad

“Cheerleading is a sport and we treat it that way in our conditioning and preparation for games and performances.”

6

The Vector | Fall ’13

The 62 young women of Moreau Catholic’s Rally Squad are the spirit leaders of the school. Their smiles and energy raise the emotional threshold of events in the gym and at football games. They are much more than mere decoration, however. They are true athletes who execute complex routines which require strength, endurance, flexibility, precision and a lot of courage. Jasmine (Sowunmi) Ogle ’90 spends six to ten hours weekly leading the young women in practice and through a rigorous conditioning regimen that targets their core and upper body. The

resulting strength gives them confidence and prevents injuries. Many members of the Rally Squad also play sports or participate in Moreau’s dance program. Sidney Nguyen ’16 and Michaela Wong ’16 (profiled on page 7) are pole vaulters. As a student at Moreau Catholic, Coach Ogle participated in Cheer and Song for three years. In addition to her work as a conditioning coach, she choreographs the routines for the three squads. The dances are edgy and dynamic and the routines incorporate much more tumbling than in years past.

Let to right: Siena Scoppetta ’17, Alexis Portea ’14, Jasmyn Fletcher ’15 and Michaela Wong ’16

As the Rally Squad’s Assistant Coach for Logistics, parent and Moreau Catholic staff member Julie Maroun supports Coach Ogle in all aspects of the program. Her daughter Jocelyn ’12 participated in 2 years of competition Cheer at Motions Cheer Gyms. Despite significant health challenges as a freshman, Jocelyn participated in all four years of Varsity Song at Moreau and was recently selected for the squad at St. Mary’s College. J.C. Maroun ’14 is on the Mariner Varsity Football team. Moreau Catholic’s Rally Squad athletes and their coaches, Jasmine and Julie,

Coach/Teacher Ben Greenbaum ’00 demonstrates a core-strenghtening exercise.

Sophomore Sidney Nguyen is deceptively strong despite her petite frame. She can dead lift more than her weight.

Clearing the Bar 9 feet above the field

As a Moreau Catholic senior, coach and theology teacher Ben Greenbaum ’00 was the Hayward Area Athletic League Champion and Bayshore North Coast Champion in pole vaulting. During his time at Moreau, Ben played 4 years of soccer, 3 years of football, ran 1 year of cross country and competed in track and field for 4 years. The practical knowledge Ben gained from his extensive participation in athletics, combined with his all-consuming passion for coaching provides “his girls” with an exceptional mentor. Ben does not use the phrase possessively. Rather, it expresses the pride he has in the accomplishments of “his” volleyball team and the pole vaulters he trains—the concern he extends to all facets of their well-being and academic endeavors. Ben Greenbaum is truly a hearts and minds coach. After finishing his degree at the University of California, Davis, Ben came back to Moreau Catholic to coach. During his first season, Coach Greenbaum mentored pole vaulter Audrey Miciano, who qualified for the North Coast Section Championship as a first year participant in the sport. Ben’s training regimen develops athletic potential quickly and this year, he has four up and coming stars: Sidney Nguyen ’16, Michaela Wong ’16, Kim Rivera ’15 and Ericka Serrano ’15.

Sophomore Michaela Wong is powerful and graceful.

Pole vaulting translates the kinetic energy accumulated from a sprint approach into potential energy stored by the elasticity of the pole. The objective is to gain as much initial vertical height as possible by jumping off the ground. It takes upper and lower body strength, balance and accuracy to plant the pole and sail above the bar. To build strength, Michaela and Sidney work through a series of exercises that Coach Greenbaum adjusts for level of difficulty and number of repetitions. The girls develop balance through walking on their hands and core strength by leg raises that flip them upside down in one movement, mimicking the motion of getting over the bar. In addition to training and competing in pole vault and performing with Varsity Cheer, Sidney and Michaela carry a challenging academic load that includes honors classes. Coach Greenbaum makes sure they stay on track with homework. Currently, the girls can easily clear 9 feet and are getting close to the school record which Coach Greenbaum thinks “his girls” might crush this year. Michaela and Sidney maintain perfect form when they walk across the floor on their hands.

Sidney performs stunts with Varsity Cheer and makes them look so easy!

Beloved Moreau faculty member, Peter Peabody, has been announcing and running the clock at Moreau Catholic athletic events for over 17 years. He has seen more games than anyone at the school. Peter is looking forward to the new sound system which will enable everyone to hear him. Although he will miss the “mud, guts, and glory” of football games played on the grass and in the rain, he welcomes the new improvements and high-tech surface of the soon to be built field which will reduce injuries and will restore pride in Moreau’s facilities. It is not surprising to learn that Peter takes special care to be fair and supportive of both teams on the field. His Holy Cross values are apparent in everything he does. Thank you, Peter!

Campaign for Champions, Gold Level Donors Randy ’75 and Rene ’74 Willet “I chose to give to the Campaign for Champions because I owe a lot to Moreau Catholic. The school took a chance on me and allowed me to attend in 1971. I played football for Coach Vermeil, one of the most exciting times of my high school experience. The Vermeil years seemed short in time but were very successful in terms of winning and sportsmanship. Moreau Catholic and Coach Vermeil taught me about discipline and how to believe in myself, both of which have left a positive, lasting impact on me. My wife and I are extremely grateful to Moreau Catholic and are honored to be MVP’s for the Campaign for Champions.”

WATER POLO Jonathan Landavazo ’14, who has played water polo since he was in elementary school, mobilized a critical mass of interest in the sport and a Mariner Water Polo Team was formed this year. Modern Language teacher and swim coach Ana Patterson recruited Moreau’s own Fr. Bruce Cecil, CSC to partner as a coach. The workouts take place four days a week and include grueling (no feet touching the bottom) drills to build endurance. Practices end with a spirited girls vs. guys scrimmage.

2012-13 Mariner Teams Ride the Wave The Mariner Athletic teams

began the 2012-13 school year with some trepidation, but also with great goals and hopes for success. The North Coast Section Realignment Committee established new leagues and through this process Moreau Catholic returned to the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) after 20 years in the Hayward Area Athletic League. During the first season of competition, Moreau Catholic made its presence known, with great performances in tennis, golf, cross country, and football. As the outstanding fall team, Girls Varsity Volleyball won the championship in a playoff game with Newark Memorial and earned an automatic berth to the NCS playoffs. Four out of the five fall teams went on to NCS playoffs, with football traveling to Arcata for the first round game. The winter season of sports was equally exciting. The Girls Basketball team was League Champion, and Boys Basketball placed 2nd with a frosh-laden team that excited fans wherever they played. Both teams hosted a first round game for NCS playoffs and played Healdsburg High, and both teams won!

Spring sports did not disappoint as Badminton placed first in the Division II playoff and went on to NCS where they placed 6th as a team. Pole Vault was the event of choice in Track as two vaulters went on to Meet of Champions, working to break the school record in the process. Baseball and softball both fared well in league then went on to NCS playoffs where both teams made it to the semi-finals, only to lose a close battle to the eventual winners of Division IV playoffs. With 2 league championships, 14 out of 17 programs going on to NCS playoffs, and Rally Squad going to Nationals, it was again a banner year for Mariner Athletics. All programs are looking forward to “Riding the Wave” into the 2013-14 school year and more successes within the league and beyond.

Not Your Ordinary Siblings Virginia Military Institute Graduates and Moreau Alumni Serve Their Country

James Bryant Smith ’98 Served as Captain in the 82nd Airborne Division

Against the advice of my Moreau guidance counselor, I applied for only one college. Virginia Military Institute offered none of the comforts of the commonplace four-year colleges, but instead promised adversity and discomfort. I visited VMI one cold October night. The dark and noisy barracks—which World War II General George C. Marshall once inhabited as a young cadet—scared me more than anything. But at the same time, I knew VMI would be my starting line, a challenge to prepare me for the rigors of the real world. I didn’t know it then, but I had already faced challenges that would prepare me for military college and beyond. Although I lived out my Moreau High School days in painful shyness and academic mediocrity, I found my calling in long-distance running, where Coaches Phil Wilder and Eric Ackerman taught me the value of mental discipline and intense physical effort. In short, they taught me how to hurt, and there would be no better training for the coming years as a cadet, an officer, and a combat leader. Early in my cadetship, I realized that if I 12

The Vector | Fall ’13

did not serve in the military, I could never live with myself knowing that the freedom I enjoyed was bought and preserved with the sweat and blood of better citizens than I. So I volunteered for an Army commission. After the September 11th attacks, it was clear that every generation has its defining conflict, and mine was at hand. Recognizing that I would have to face that conflict not only as an individual but as a troop leader, I sought and was granted admission to Ranger School, the Army’s premier combat leadership course. Earning the coveted Ranger tab after two attempts, I reported to the 82nd Airborne Division, where I took command of an infantry platoon. The catch was that my soldiers weren’t technically infantry; they were cooks. With civilian contractors to run the dining halls, the Army’s food service soldiers were free to cross-train for other roles in the combat theater, and the group I led was already the best platoon of cooks anywhere in the Division. For ten months, we patrolled Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, the

spiritual home of the Taliban, providing a “Quick Reaction Force” for other units in the area. Every one of my soldiers came home alive, but we served with several brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their nation’s ideals, and their own as well. At our final formation before leaving Afghanistan, my platoon was singled out for praise by the brigade commander and I received recognition for my own performance. But no amount of official notice or decoration can compare to the deep satisfaction and personal validation I felt upon meeting that challenge. Seven years later, and presumably seven years wiser, I am an attorney with a desk job (if that’s not redundant). In my free time I coach Moreau’s mock trial team, and I find myself wondering what distant challenges I am preparing them to face.

I realized that if I did not take the opportunity to serve and be part of something, I would always wonder and regret. So I found myself driving to Quantico to secure a set of those famous dress blues. A graduation speaker told my class that “it will be difficult for you to see VMI in your rear view mirror…” I did not have that difficulty, but I am forever grateful of the positive way in which that institution altered the trajectory of my life. Without VMI I doubt that it ever would have occurred to me that I would be interested in or capable of serving in the United States Marine Corps, and I may very well have missed the opportunity to make what has been the best decision of my life. My brother James graduated from Moreau in 1998 and started at VMI later that summer, while I was going into my sophomore year at Moreau. I was often asked whether I would follow in his footsteps, and early on I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard. But over the next two years I had plenty of fun and freedom, and by senior year I started thinking I wanted something different than the typical college. My application to VMI was the only one I turned in, and I was accepted as an early admission. I wanted a challenge, and that is certainly what I received.

Margaret Smith ’01 Capt. United States Marine Corps I had been at VMI only a couple of months when September 11, 2001 happened. VMI felt the repercussions as cadets in the reserves were activated, National Guardsmen called, and others graduated, commissioned, and deployed; my brother among the latter. I developed a sense that I should serve, but did not know in what capacity. Thanks to the inspiring Marine Officer Instructor and his Assistant, I was identified and convinced to attend Marine Corps Officer Candidates School (OCS) during the summer of 2004 — it was a big selling point that I could decline a commission after graduating from OCS. Even with VMI’s ratline under my belt, OCS was more challenging — same difficult, sleep-deprived circumstances, but instead of being expected to simply follow orders and execute tasks, we were evaluated on our ability to lead our peers and make effective decisions. Despite passing grades, I was pretty miserable at OCS and often thought about “dropping on request,” i.e. removing myself from the program. I never brought myself to do it, though. DOR is just a euphemism for

quitting. So I laughed when I could, cried when I needed to (at the end of the day, and only around peers – don’t judge me), and, without being conscious of it, forced myself to get through the next evolution. Not a bad way to get through a hard time in life, as it turns out. During my senior year at VMI I was on the fence about the Marine Corps. I didn’t know what to expect or if I would be worthy. The decision did not come to me until one of the last weekends in early spring when I had to buy my dress uniform or I would not be ready to commission with my classmates. I realized that if I did not take the opportunity to serve and be part of something, I would always wonder and regret. So I found myself driving to Quantico to secure a set of those famous dress blues. Come May 2005 I was excited and nervous to be moving on to the next challenge, and proud to be counted among the 16 cadets commissioning into the Marine Corps. It has been more than eight years since my parents pinned on my second lieutenant bars and my brother administered the oath to me. I have served in the Marine Aircraft Wing and the Division, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, worked on staff of the OCS I so disliked as a candidate, and am currently serving as a Company Commander. I sleep well feeling like I am doing meaningful work, and when I can have a positive impact on a Marine’s life that makes it all the more worthwhile.

Ways To Give There are many ways you can make charitable contributions to Moreau Catholic High School and invest in its future. Cash Gifts Cash donations, whether by check, credit card, or electronic transfer, are the easiest way for most donors to give to Moreau Catholic.

Pledges A pledge is a form of gift that enables the donor to make a contribution on a set schedule over an agreed upon length of time, usually several months to a few years. This often allows a donor to commit to an amount larger than they might otherwise be able to make within a one year time frame. The Office of Institutional Advancement has the ability to accommodate pledge payment schedules suiting most circumstances.

Stocks & Bonds Stocks and bonds are a tax-wise way to make a contribution. Donors are often able to make a larger donation than with cash and these donations usually provide savings on capital gains taxes. Depending upon your individual tax situation, you may receive an income tax deduction for full fair market value. Be sure to discuss this type of donation with your financial advisor or broker.

Real Estate Given the dynamic real estate market over the past several years, a donation of real estate may be beneficial to both the donor and to Moreau Catholic. In order to continue our mission, Moreau Catholic will consider on a caseby-case basis accepting the gift of a home, vacation property, condominium, apartment complex, undeveloped land, or other real estate.

Paid Up Life Insurance Donors who own paid up life insurance policies that are no longer needed for its original purpose may donate the policy to Moreau Catholic by transferring ownership to the school. Generally, the donor will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value. Discuss this option with your insurance agent.

Wills, Trusts, and Planned Giving Please include Moreau Catholic High School in your estate plans. Inclusion in your will can take several forms: • Designate a specific amount to be directed to the school. • Designate a percentage of your estate to be directed to the school. • Designate the “remainder” portion of your estate that is left over when all other obligations and provisions have been addressed. For document preparation, please use the legal title of the school: Moreau Catholic High School Trained financial advisors can provide you with additional estate planning options that are appropriate for your individual situation. Be sure to contact your attorney or financial advisor to discuss any implications a charitable contribution may have on your taxes and your estate. For more information or to discuss any donation, contact the

Office of Institutional Advancement at 510.881.4322.

Introducing

The Withams

Julia Ando, Director of Admissions

Campaign for Champions Platinum Level Donors

It was clear to me from the moment I set foot on campus this fall that Moreau Catholic High School is a special place. Every day, I see incredible things taking place in our classrooms, community, and in the hearts and minds of students.

“Since our son’s admissions interview with Coach Cotter, we were sold on the value of a Moreau Catholic education. Although we give regularly, the Campaign for Champions is very close to our hearts. We have been immensely impressed with the athletics program—the dedication of the coaches, the camaraderie of the players, and the impact on our son— making it easy to contribute to the Campaign for Champions.”

As Director of Admissions, it is my privilege to share with people all the benefits of a Moreau education. Often prospective students and families learn about our school from current students and alumni, and it’s this connection that draws them into the Moreau family. Our community is our greatest recruitment tool, so I encourage you to continue sharing your experiences and inviting people to come to campus. Open House on November 16 is a great opportunity to see a showcase of all our programs. I look forward to working in partnership with you and welcoming another stellar group of young people to the MCHS Class of 2018 this spring. Go Mariners!

Our Voyage to Fifty From its inception, Moreau Catholic High School has been deeply rooted in the heritage and mission of the Brothers of Holy Cross. Holy Cross Priests and Brothers traveled from France to the United States to found the University of Notre Dame and eventually came to California to establish Moreau High School in 1965. Moreau Catholic will be celebrating its Fiftieth Anniversary—commencing in August 2014 and culminating in June 2015. Information concerning all the exciting events and special projects will be in upcoming issues of The Vector and mailings.

All Saints Day Mass Friday, November 1, 2013

Intentions for Feast of All Saints Mass On Friday, November 1, 2013, the Moreau Catholic community will be celebrating the Feast of All Saints with an all-school liturgy. We invite you to attend Mass and/or send us prayer intentions for your loved ones. Please send your intentions to Diana (Straggas) DeFrance ’76 ddefrance@moreuacatholic.org or register online at moreaucatholic.org/allsaints13 by October 29, 2013. We look forward to seeing you at this special and moving celebration, or receiving your specific intentions. Moreau Catholic is honored to remember your loved ones and other school community members. Our loved ones are absent from our lives — but never forgotten.

Peace and God’s blessings to all our Mariner families.

Holy Cross Brother Gary Stone, CSC began teaching at Moreau Catholic High School in 1970 and held a variety of positions, including that of the school’s vice principal. He died of cancer in 1979 at the age of thirtynine. At his eulogy a former student of his said:

“Brother Gary’s vitality in the classroom and in all aspects of his life affected everyone who met the man.” In 1982, the Brother Gary Stone Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to assist merit scholars at Moreau. Since the fund’s inception, its growth has been the result of proceeds raised from twenty–nine years of the Moreau Golf Classic.

Submit YOUR Mariner Wave to: Dani Lorta ’89 Annual Giving and Alumni Relations Coordinator dlorta@moreaucatholic.org

Brother Gary challenged me to dig deeper in my approach to history and my role in creating it. “Still haven’t learned how to learn yet, eh Mr. Chavez?” It is an honor to write about our great shared history. Our time at Moreau bestows many gifts, yet I cannot help feeling that there is one that is easy for each of you to recognize in yourselves, no questions asked. No matter where we came from, before landing here, and without regard for where we traveled to once we left, it was Moreau High School making the difference. And to those of my fellow alumni who have just begun your journey, know this—Moreau will be your edge in life. It has been just over 40 years since my time at Moreau drew to a close along with the mighty class of ’73. We were the first “co-ed” class (was I ever glad!). I came from St. John’s in San Lorenzo with my fellow Shamrocks—Mike Hoppe, Danny Lamb, Cecil Moreno, Roy Towers, Janice Truax, Carolyn Roach, John Dilsaver, Gary Brown, Gwen Peterson, Chuck Millier, Diana Ayala, to name a few! Tuition was just under $500 per year. The football field “miracle” had just been performed in time for the first season of Moreau football and our class’ arrival. I was on my way to racking up another four years of Catholic education at Moreau. But little did I know, my Holy Cross rendition of Catholic schooling was just beginning. I went on to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Larry Merrington made it in as well from the class of 73. Mark Wurzel and Pat Behan from the class of ’72 had preceded us there. Each segment of my education has been important to the many roles I’ve been blessed to play in life. But it was at Moreau where my roots formed, took hold, and will forever be. Back then Joni Mitchell sang “…but you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” No truer

words were ever sung. I learned just how true during my first week on the Notre Dame campus back in August of 1973. All Notre Dame freshmen were required to meet with a guidance counselor. My counselor was telling me about “the most inspiring letter of recommendation that she’d ever read.” She recited some of the phrases from the unfolded page that rested on her desk. As she read, I was thinking that it would feel pretty good knowing somebody had that kind of faith in my potential.

Anthony Chavez ’73

My first week in South Bend had been overwhelming for a kid from the Cherryland! Did I have what it took to even make it there? Then my counselor rocked me by saying the letter was about me. “Your advisor, Brother Gary Stone, wrote this about you, Tony. He wrote this because he knows who you really are—maybe even before you’ve come to know who you really are. That’s a rare gift.” I heard those words 40 years ago this summer. Had it not been for that letter, I’m certain my admission would never have happened. I was a B student at Moreau and my SAT scores were in the mid900s. But someone knew it was about much more than grades and test scores. That was Brother Gary Stone. Brother Gary vouched for my ability to learn, to question, and my determination to “never

quit.” Brother Gary challenged me to dig deeper in my approach to history and my role in creating it. “Still haven’t learned how to learn yet, eh Mr. Chavez?” That is what a Moreau Catholic education offers the young ones who make it here to begin their journey into young adulthood—a gift we share. We leave Moreau as captains of our destinies— Mariners, one and all. Throughout these 40 years I have been blessed with children and grandchildren, three major career paths, and a resurgent spiritual life. My present pursuits as a writer and entrepreneur have evolved as a result of my experience at Moreau. The class of ’73 left Moreau less than five years after America put a man on the moon. Air traffic controllers were routing jets from their radar screens without computers. The Silicon Valley was pasture land and salt marsh. So much has changed. What has unfolded since has demanded that we Mariners keep up, look at life with open minds, and be willing to learn new skills. Moreau prepared us. We have all risen to challenges and obstacles unimaginable during days when our football field had no lights! All because our teachers and mentors at Moreau saw potential in us, we learned to look for it in ourselves. The future that Brother Gary Stone saw in my potential was something he seemed to see in each one of us. He knew us “one by one.” Moreau Catholic has prepared us to learn over our lifetimes. The rarest of gifts awaits all who would enter here. This Mariner knows that it’s “…only the beginning…”
