ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018

Dear Mariners, In this season of giving thanks and showing gratitude for all that we have, we are deeply thankful for all the alumni, parents, friends and students who supported Moreau Catholic High School during Fiscal Year 2017-2018. Gifts to Moreau Catholic make possible the unparalleled Holy Cross educational experience that is available to our students. Your support demonstrates a belief, not only in the strong education delivered by Moreau Catholic, but also in the education today’s students are receiving. Because of your experience, you are aware of the extraordinary quality of instruction provided students by the highly qualified and skilled faculty who deliver an outstanding college-preparatory education at Moreau Catholic. You understand the value of assisting the next generation of thought leaders with their learning and growth. You exemplify hope in the younger generation and in the future for which they are being prepared. For this, we are truly blessed and thankful. Unlike in years past when the annual report was included in The Vector, Moreau Catholic is moving to a digital format for the annual report. We are always looking at ways that we can continue to move toward becoming a more green, environmentally friendly school. We hope you enjoy the stories included in this edition, and as always, we welcome your thoughts and feedback. Our hearts are filled with gratefulness to all who help to support Moreau Catholic High School. It is through your partnership, generosity and faith that we can continue to fulfill Blessed Father Basil Moreau’s mission of “educating the hearts and minds” of our next generation of leaders. In thanksgiving,

Terry Lee President

For me, it was just exposure to an opportunity I wasn’t expecting, and I’d like to expose those opportunities for others. That’s what I want to do.

What brings you back to Moreau and what keeps you involved?

Moreau is home for me for a lot of reasons. My mom was class of ’78, so I had heard stories about the Moreau community. She just raved about the community here. Every time we drove by Moreau, it was a symbol of what I could aspire to, and I could share that piece with her. I graduated from All Saints School, where Mrs. (Colleen) Galloway was our 8th grade teacher. She came to Moreau with us for our freshman year. So, I knew her, and then I met Coach (Phil) Wilder, who was a major influence for me. I had heard stories about Ms. Janita Gee, Mr. Peter Peabody, and Mr. Petar Zegura, all whom I believe were there when my mom was a student. When I started at Moreau, it was the wonderful community that my mom had talked about.

Why do you still participate in the Moreau community?

There are a few key moments as to why I stay involved. When I was a senior, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The Moreau community really rallied around us. She wasn’t able to work and Moreau put together financial aid to help my sister and me. One night I had cried to a coach that I wasn’t able to apply to as many colleges as I wanted due to my mom not working and my dad taking time off to care for her. Coach Wilder and his wife stepped in to sponsor college applications for me. Colleen and Nancy Galloway, who knew me since kindergarten and coached my sister in basketball, asked what they could do to help. They took the time to make sure we were emotionally supported and to make sure that we had what was needed to continue to thrive at Moreau. You don’t forget that. My mom continued to fight her battle with cancer for 14 more years, and she passed away earlier this year. Mr. Wilder and Mrs. Galloway were at her service. A while back, I had coffee with Mr. Wilder. I said “I have to make sure that more kids spend time with you, and more kids get to enjoy the support, the community, and the challenges that I got to experience at Moreau.”

How do you think Moreau can get more alumni to be active in our community again?

I feel people go through high school and they have fond memories of it and then they move forward. I stay connected due to a very strong emotional connection to a lot of events that happened to me in high school. It has always been present for me. I think inspiring people to remember that emotional connection can be powerful. If the only interaction they have with an institution is being asking if they can get something from you, it becomes transactional. I think a platform needs to be built that creates a more holistic relationship. Recently Sneh (Dadlani ’05, coworker at Sift Science) and I reconnected. We hadn’t talked in years. We just slipped back into this rhythm that we had in high school, and I think a lot of that is returning to an emotional place in high school that we were very fond of. Reminding alumni of that will draw them back. The oneon-one interactions mean a lot to me. I enjoy the magazines that come in the mail, but the emails from Coach Wilder, or getting a call from Moreau and it is Colleen Kelly, whom I’ve known since I was a kid in CYO, is a consent reminder of that special connection with Moreau. That’s what really keeps me coming back. It is these kind of connections that will make people want to come back and do things.

You were recently in attendance at the 3rd Annual Law Day put on by the Mock Trial team. What were your impressions?

It was a great event! Joseph Ibalio ’22 was the expert witness as part of the trial demonstration. It was amazing and he blew my mind. Our moms were friends and my mom held Joseph when he was a baby, He is actually the recipient of the scholarship that I started for Mock Trial. It was really special to see. I, also, had the opportunity to connect with some other ’05ers who are married to each other and I saw Peter Borruso ’03 (Mock Trial coach). I ran cross country with Peter. It was special to see him because I remember him being just this ragtag kid I used to run with and he’s now a lawyer, doing really noble work.

Annual Report 2017-2018 | 5

You mentioned the Mock Trial scholarship. What is your vision for it in the future?

The vision is limited right now. Really, it just started after I sent Coach Wilder a text and we had coffee. I told him to let me know how I can help, and I’d like to donate. I asked how much it cost to send a kid to Mock Trial camp, and did some triangulation to determine what my ultimate gift was going to be. Mr. Wilder asked if I wanted to make this donation in the name of anybody. I said absolutely, “My mom,” and can we make this a scholarship. It’s strange, knowing your mom is sick and you know that she is going to go at some point. So it was always my vision to memorialize her in some way. I thought it was fitting since she is an alumna. This was a way that I could make sure that her efforts to provide us with a good education weren’t in vain. My vision for this is scholarship is to make sure that kids continue to have the opportunity to participate in something meaningful. My time at Moreau was supplemented and supported by a physical sport, but what I think is really interesting about Mock Trial is it’s an intellectual strengthening exercise. Coach Wilder’s cross country philosophy has always been that anyone who wants to do it can be a part of the team. When I was competing on the cross country team, it was 100+ people strong, which at that time meant that more than 10% of the school was participating in cross country! Mr. Wilder applies that same philosophy to Mock Trial. I want this scholarship to serve as a platform for anybody to be part of something that’s bigger than him or herself. Coach Wilder is really excellent at facilitating that. I joined cross country because I got a flyer in the mail before I started at Moreau. The flyer talked about how previous teams had gone to Japan and Oregon, and I thought that sounded pretty cool. This being back in the day of AOL Instant Messenger, I happened to be chatting with a boy I had a crush on and we said we would go out for cross country together. That boy didn’t last in my life, but Coach Wilder and the other coaches have. I still light up when I see those folks today. They are family. I want a student who, at 14 doesn’t know what he or she wants to do, or doesn’t know who he or she wants to be is exposed to many opportunities. Sometimes, it’s just the right mixture of environment and someone to guide and mentor them. For me, it was exposure to an opportunity I wasn’t expecting, and I’d like to present these opportunities for others. That’s what I want to do. Emerald and mother Fe (Villamonte) Maravilla ’78

Sobrato Scholars Nearing Graduation

14 | Moreau Catholic

n

In 2015, the Sobrato Family Scholarship was established at Moreau Catholic High School with the primary objective of providing financial assistance and access to a Catholic, college-preparatory education for students who might not otherwise be able to attend Moreau. Over the last three and a half years, four Moreau Catholic students have directly benefited from the generosity of the Sobrato Family. In May 2019, each will be receiving his/her high school diploma and are looking forward to transitioning to college. Caitlyn, Hailey, Jacob, and Nathalie have all expressed an appreciation for having received the Sobrato Scholarship – and recognize the lasting impact it has made on their education. “The opportunity to come to Moreau has had a great impact on my life. I have developed great relationships with many teachers, coaches, and students. It has helped me further my academic and athletic career, and I am very grateful,” Jacob said. Our students are thriving at Moreau Catholic, and our Sobrato Scholars are no exception. They have excelled in the classroom and are preparing for the next step in their educational journey, college. Caitlyn is applying for admission to California Lutheran University and the University of California, Irvine, and is interested in pursuing a career in neuropsychiatry. Jacob will be attending the University of the Pacific and continuing his baseball career at the NCAA Division I level. Nathalie wants to be a nurse practitioner, while Hailey would like to pursue veterinary studies or attend an art school for animation. The impact of a donation, like the Sobrato Scholarship, is immense and has a lasting impact on our students. Caitlyn says, “Because of donors, students are able to surpass their goals and reach for dreams that were seemingly impossible.” Nathalie adds that “Receiving a scholarship allowed me to be able to study and receive an education from a private, Catholic, college-preparatory school at an affordable price for my family, and it motivated me to excel in my academics.” When reflecting back at their time at Moreau Catholic, friendship is what consistently comes to the forefront of their thoughts. They think about the friendships they have developed over four years, the special moment of being part of the cast in the spring musical or the excitement and comradery of spirit week. These are all memories that each will cherish when they look back upon their time at Moreau Catholic. When Caitlyn, Hailey, Jacob, and Nathalie speak about Moreau Catholic, the words family, supportive, engaging and faith are sprinkled throughout the conversation. They mention how the faculty motivates and encourages each student to reach beyond what he or she thinks are his or her limits. Hailey states,“I have been pushed to grow as a student and as a person, and throughout every step of the way I have been greeted with support and an acceptance from the faculty and the entire Moreau Catholic community.” It is an endearment and commitment to each other. It is within a welcoming, compassionate environment that our students are able to thrive and excel in their studies. But none of this would be possible for our students without donors who see the value in a collegepreparatory education. Caitlyn sums up the feeling for all of our students. “I would like to thank not only the Sobrato family, but all donors in general. Thank you, from me and all recipients for all of your hard work, dedication and for believing in us.”

Barbara Hemenez The first female Board Chair in the school’s history. When looking back on her decades-long association with Moreau Catholic High School, the first thing that Barbara Hemenez, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, thinks about are the dances she used to attend here, despite not being a Moreau student. “I went to public school, but for the first 6 or 8 months of high school, I went to the Moreau dances. It was a big thing back then, a new school opening up, and it was an all-boys school at first and my class was going to be the first class of girls when it became co-ed. A lot of my friends from grammar school went to Moreau so I would go to the dances with them. I still remember the Brothers, or other chaperones, having flashlights and walking around at the dance, and they had to be able to see the light between the girls and boys dancing!” Despite not being a Moreau grad herself, Hemenez is an alumni parent, having had her son Travis ’02 and daughter Monica ’06 graduate from Moreau. Both children went on to attend Cal Poly, and Travis is now a firefighter in San Francisco, while Monica is a field biologist who works all over the state of California for environmental consulting agencies.

Hemenez began her volunteer work at Moreau in 1998 when her son was a freshman. She served as a Parish Ambassador and would return to her home parish to promote all of the things happening at Moreau to the next generation of potential Mariners. “I laugh when I tell my kids that they only went to Moreau for four years a piece, but since I started volunteering in 1998, I’ve now been going there for 20 years!” She continued in this role for the duration of her kids’ time at Moreau and eventually transitioned into being a part of the Mission Integration Committee. This group would meet monthly with current students to hear about all of the things happening on campus and use their input to make missiondriven decisions for the school as a whole. “I loved being a part of Mission Integration because it gave me the opportunity to be hands-on with the students. It always amazed me how these 3-4 students that were on the committee could come in and speak at the meetings. It was overwhelming to see how they could interact in that environment and how they portrayed themselves. They are just so articulate. I’m amazed at how the students are willing to be involved and participate in things. When I was a teenager I wasn’t doing anything like what these kids are doing.” After serving on this committee for several years, Hemenez was invited to join the Board of Trustees, where she has now been serving for eight years, the last three as Board Chair. She is the first female Board Chair in the school’s history. When asked to pinpoint what she has been proudest of during her time on the Board, she had a hard time pointing to any one particular moment. “We’ve done so many things... it’s really hard to boil it down to one thing I can point to. But I am very proud of the work we have done to be more inclusive of students who in the past would have been turned away based solely on an admissions test. We are offering admission to these kids who struggled before, and through personalization and the support in the Learning Center, they are blossoming and their test scores are off the charts. Whereas, before we would have had to turn these kids away and say we can’t help you here. So, that’s a really big thing for all of us on the Board, that these kids are succeeding here, and I don’t know how they would have done if they had gone somewhere else. I think that’s something to brag about.”

keeps her coming back year after year. “It’s the students. and the people. It’s such a great group of people, and it’s very diverse, but we’re all so cohesive and everybody is there because we want the best for the school. I look forward to it, and don’t look at it as an obligation in any way, shape, or form. I probably get more out of it than what I give. I consider it more of a celebration than an obligation. It is my choice to be a part of Moreau, and it’s one of the best choices I’ve ever made.” Her passion for Moreau Catholic is evident from the moment she starts talking, and that passion can be infectious. Perhaps one of the most important roles of a volunteer can be getting others involved in what you are doing so that the energy continues to grow, and bigger and better things can continue to happen. “One thing I think is that you need parents to be involved and active. When we look around the Board table, we realize that we were all active when our kids were there. I say this to parents all the time: Come and spend a day on campus and see what’s going on! Go into a classroom and you will be blown away by the transformations happening within these four walls.” Despite spending 20 years at Moreau as a parent, volunteer, and Board member, Hemenez still continues to look to the future and toward the work that still needs to be done. “They tell us at the Board that we are at the 30,000-foot level, so we don’t have a lot of hands-on activity, but it does allow us to oversee everything. And what we’re seeing now is that there is a renewed effort being put into getting the faculty and staff involved and listening to their input. This will help to make small changes that end up making a big difference in the long run, and I think that’s really important. I think they are really hoping to have every student leave Moreau having had a positive experience here and leave here bragging about his or her time here. I’m a firm believer in building for the future, and you have to do it one student at a time — and I can’t see anywhere else that I could imagine spending my time that is more important than at Moreau.”

Considering the length of time that she has been a part of the Moreau Catholic community, it becomes obvious that there is something about Moreau that
