Letter from the President Dear Mariners, The founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Blessed Basil Moreau, CSC, was the inspiration behind this year’s Holy Cross theme of Being Family, because he created the Congregation to model the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The priests are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; the sisters are dedicated to Mary; and the brothers are dedicated to St. Joseph. We embrace this theme every four years to instill in our students the importance of family—their own family, their Mariner family, the family of Holy Cross, and the Holy Family that inspires it all. The most recent, and very powerful example of the theme of Being Family is the completion of the new Athletics & Student Activities Complex this summer. The success of this project was due, in large part, to so many members of the Mariner family who supported the Campaign for Champions and helped make our dreams Ribbon Cutting celebrants: Principal Lisa Tortorich with a reality. Every student, every teacher, every coach, and every staff member is Brother William Zaydak, CSC, Provincial of the Moreau touched by the generosity of our donors, who not only supported this campaign Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross but also supported The Moreau Fund, scholarships, the arts, technology, the Crab Feed, tuition assistance, and many other vital programs of the school. We offer our deepest gratitude to all our donors in this issue of The Vector in our annual report. Thank you for all you do for Moreau Catholic High School! We have also launched our 50th anniversary celebration—a bit early, but we wanted to make sure the graduating class of 2015 had their entire senior year to celebrate this milestone. We look forward to seeing you at Homecoming on October 24, and at all of the 50th anniversary celebrations and events we have planned for the next year. Moreau Catholic continues to make an enormous difference in the lives of our students—they are well prepared for college and for life, and our alumni are doing amazing things, locally and globally. As one big Mariner family, let us all celebrate our 50th together, and keep all we love about this school strong, vibrant, and exciting! Peace and best wishes,

Terry Lee President

Al Vermeil Field, an all-weather turf soccer and football field; The Fremont Bank Pavilion, seating for 1,100 fans, sound systems and press box; an eight-lane, 400-meter all weather track; and The Mariner Café, in recognition of the continuing support from the Moreau Catholic Boosters Club. The day’s dedications included the redesigned complex entrance, the Capurro Family Plaza, in honor of Vernon

and Mary Capurro and their family’s commitment to Catholic education; and the Foxworthy Gate, in honor of the late Doug Foxworthy, Class of 1978. HKIT Architects led by Jason Shirriff, and Blach Construction led by Tony Mirenda provided architectural design and construction of the entire project.

Members of Moreau Catholic’s first graduating class of 72 boys with Diana (Straggas) DeFrance ’76: Patrick Gallagher ’69, Fr. Larry Young, Dave Donnan ’69 and Lance Mangano ’69 Adorned with the Mariner’s wheel, the Foxworthy Gate was officially opened by members of Moreau Catholic’s first graduating class including Dave Donnan ’69 and members of the youngest Mariners from the Class of 2018 including Dino Bevilacqua, Shane Knight and Sinai Ayala. Of the 72 graduates in the all-boy’s Class of 1969, Donnan said that a handful were taking advantage of the ribbon cutting to hold a reunion at Buffalo Bills restaurant in Hayward. Father Bruce Cecil, CSC, Moreau Catholic Chaplain led the procession of supporters through the gates, to the visitors bleachers, to the center of the field and finally to the Fremont Bank Pavilion, blessing each stop along the way. “This accomplishment has taken the entire Moreau community,” said Moreau Catholic President Terry Lee. “We honor our past and those people who created our legacy to benefit Moreau students of today and tomorrow.” “I believe we now have the best complex in the Mission Valley Athletic League,” said Varsity Football team captain Anthony Bailey, representing the Big

Rick Foundation. The new field “gives us a competitive edge and allows us to compete at a higher level. When we take the field this season with our green and gold, we will show what Mariner pride is all about,” he added. Al Vermeil coached Moreau Catholic football for six seasons beginning in

Coach Al Vermeil and Gordon Foxworthy ’76 1973 and led the Mariners to nine football championships and was named the 1975 Catholic Athletic League Coach of the Year. Surrounded by former assistant coaches, players and family, Vermeil called the honor “a humbling experience to see and the greatest thing to happen to a coach. It’s not about me,” he added,

“but about the players, parents, coaches and administration. I’m just a part of something much bigger,” said Vermeil as he called up individual players to recall classic winning plays of the past. Vermeil left Moreau Catholic in 1979 to join the coaching staff of the San Francisco 49ers, but calls his days on the high school field “the best part of my adult life. There’s something about coaching these young people that ignites a spark in me like an eternal flame,” he adds. “It’s a beautiful day to see the finished project,” said Board of Trustees member Ed Raney. The new complex “improves MCHS’ reputation in the eyes of our community. We have a state-of-the-art sports facility just as we have cutting edge academics, technology and library,” said Raney, who was athletic booster president five years ago when the project was launched and is now on the Board of Trustees and chair of the Finance Committee. A half dozen football players from Casa Roble High School Class of 1970 came to the ribbon cutting from the Sacramento area to see Vermeil, their

former football coach, and to honor the man who taught them much more than football. Mike Dubrey, Mark Demler, Dave Williams, Frank Gadbery and Mike Padjen swapped stories and memories of their former coach. “He showed an interest in each player,” said Williams, “and had an impact on everyone and was a big inspiration to us.” Says Dubrey, “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house” when Vermeil left Casa Roble their junior year to come to Moreau Catholic. “We’re here because he means a lot to us,” said Demler. Another former football player Steve Carvalho ’78 said he was glad to see the new football field and was there to honor Coach Vermeil. “Coach taught us about life lessons and things you could use later in life,” he said, and not just football. The “Voice” of Moreau Catholic, Peter Peabody, has called plays at Moreau football and basketball games for as long as anyone can remember. “I’m looking forward to being on the home side of the field,” says Peabody, and with the aid of the new sound system, he’s happy “the people will be able to hear me and I can catch the energy of the crowd.” “We’ve always appreciated the wonderful community here at Moreau,” said Florence Thau who came to

the event with her husband Willard. The Castro Valley couple’s two sons, Mark ’94 and Matt ’98 played soccer and ran track and cross country. The family commemorated their time at the school with the purchase of an engraved paver in the Capurro Family Plaza. “We spent lots of time watching the soccer games on the old field.” The new complex “is a really big step for Moreau,” she added. “It’s nice to see the school spend money on athletics and (the complex) is a nice addition to the campus,” said Jim Songey ’79 who spent his years at Moreau on the wrestling team. “To accomplish big dreams, you have to dream big,” said Mark Delventhal, who donated to the Campaign for Champions and attended the festivities with the Raimondi family. The morning’s festivities culminated with an inaugural lap around the track led by Alitta Boyd, Class of 2009, All-American in track who won a gold medal in the long jump and silver medal in the triple jump at the 2009 Pan-Am Games and holds the record for the 4th all-time best triple jump by a USC Trojan female. Members of the Moreau Cross Country Team accompanied her while Varsity Football players ran drills on the north end of the field and the Mariner Soccer

Olympic hopeful and high school All-American, Alitta Boyd ’09, shared a hug with Mrs. Bernie Puccini. players demonstrated their skills on the south end. The opening of the athletic field and sport complex culminates months of construction that began with the groundbreaking ceremony on a rainy February weekend and more than a year of fundraising to get close to the $5 million price tag. There are still opportunities to create a lasting impression in the Capurro Family Plaza where you can purchase a personalized stone paver or dedicate a bench in a loved one’s honor. Mariners are MAKERS Visit moreaucatholic.org, click on the banner of this photo to access a video about the Maker Lab.

By Monica Lander

Creating functional objects using today’s technology is empowering students’ creativity at the MCHS Maker Lab that has taken over the library’s second-floor balcony at Moreau Catholic High School. Learning by doing is the concept behind this latest endeavor whether they are building a robot that can carry items, programming LED lights on a costume, or discovering the capabilities of a 3D printer.

10

The Vector | Fall ’14

Librarian Jessica Simons explains that “The Maker Lab is accessible to students regardless of what class they are taking, bringing more of the technology you traditionally find in makerspaces together in one location, expanding the makerspaces already in place at Moreau Catholic including robotics, art and theater classes.

Another lesson to be learned is that there is value in both achievement and failure, says Arriaga.

Capitalizing on the maker movement and maker fairs that have swept across the United States including a stop at the White House, MCHS has designated a place “where students problem find and then problem solve,” says Anne Arriaga, head librarian. Students learn the difference between just problem solving and actual problem finding. Unlike a traditional math class where students are solving the pre-written problems with known formulas or properties, students in a maker lab have to explore and discover, experiment and develop their own working knowledge of how things work.

Academy where students begged their teacher

“Failure is not a setback, but a motivator,” referring to the Moreau Explorers Summer Paul McKenna ’83 to let them stay in the maker lab so they could take more time to figure out what they needed to do to successfully program a set of green and gold LED lights to blink on an Arduino board.

Additionally, students are also learning about innovative uses of technology that have potentially greater social justice benefits. For example, in the Robotics class students study such practical applications as prosthetic limbs and personal assistive robots. Computer teacher Gary Gongwer feels that, “In the maker lab, students have the opportunity to further build on these ideas in different formats.” Spread out like a makeshift laboratory, the equipment includes Arduinos, which can be programmed to do various functions and are used in robotics; gaming components, such as the Makey Makey; Snap Circuits and Raspberry Pi, as well as a 3D printer.

Moreau Catholic librarians Anne Arriaga (L) and Jessica Simons Because technology has become so user friendly, says Arriaga, we refer to it as “functional magic,” and “we assume it will work but don’t know why.” There is value in knowing how things work and the Maker Lab provides students the opportunity to ’play with technology’ while gaining fundamental lessons. “We’ve all experienced how much better we retain lessons we learn through play and interaction than those we encounter through rote learning” said Moreau Catholic’s Director of Technology, Shawna Martin.

“The challenge is getting everyone’s attention,” says Simons, “and educating people about what is up here in the library, and teaching students how to use it”. Librarians Arriaga, Simons, and Library Technology Specialist Connie Stanton, in collaboration with the Director of Technology, Shawna Martin, and Instructional Technology Specialist, Dominic Mendiola are the team managing this space. Open 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., students interested in working in the Maker Lab can be certified in each of the specific pieces of equipment. The Maker Lab’s demonstrations and exhibits are already attracting students’ innate curiosity to explore something with which they are not familiar.

With the use of the Raspberry Pi, students are shown the inner workings of the computer. The computer’s operating system isn’t masked, but rather every coding line is shown when the computer starts up. The students learn what the computer has to do in order to work. Fall ’14 | The Vector

Tony Avila ’83 First Marathon to benefit Janet Pessagno Memorial Scholarship The third-year Cal Berkeley student who is pursuing degrees in bioengineering and computer science added that the scholarship was “a motivator to do well in school and contributed to the study habits and sense of responsibility that I have carried over into college.” Avila had never run a marathon before but trained for six months prior to the July date. Friends, family, fellow alumni and members of the Moreau Catholic family generously made pledges and he quickly surpassed his goal of raising $50,000. Two scholarships are awarded annually to freshmen for their sophomore year based on their commitment to community service and academic standing. Due to the success of this year’s fundraiser, “We will be able to award more in future years,” according to Moreau Catholic President Terry Lee.

His mom’s life was devoted to giving back to the community and working diligently to maintain a steady stride of service above self. Tony Avila ’83 picked up that pace and ran in his first marathon to benefit the scholarship he and his siblings established in her name and raised more than $67,615. Janet Pessagno worked as the development coordinator for the Sisters of Holy Rosary and spent countless hours in her children’s classrooms and at Moreau Catholic in addition to devoting her time to various charities. When she died in 2003 from breast cancer at the age of 61, Avila, his brother, Tim ’87, sister Gina ’91 and cousin Alison ’94 established the Janet Pessagno Memorial Scholarship a year later to honor her dedication to community service and her generous philanthropy that defined who she was and how she lived her life. “It’s important that the students understand my mother was always thinking about the community and how to give back to the community,” says Avila. “She believed in ’service above self’ and the importance of giving back.” “Applying for the scholarship and taking part in community service taught me how to set and accomplish goals that were both personal and for the good of the community,” said Jonathan King, ’12, and 2009 scholarship recipient.

12

The Vector | Fall ’14

Proceeds from the marathon pledges were the most raised in a single event for this scholarship, says Avila. Thrilled with the response, he has already started training for the “Escape from Alcatraz” triathlon scheduled for next June in which he will swim, bike and run in memory of his mother. — By Monica Lander

Ways To Give There are many ways you can make charitable contributions to Moreau Catholic High School and invest in its future. Cash Gifts Cash donations, whether by check, credit card, or electronic transfer, are the easiest way for most donors to give to Moreau Catholic.

Pledges A pledge is a form of gift that enables the donor to make a contribution on a set schedule over an agreed upon length of time, usually several months to a few years. This often allows a donor to commit to an amount larger than they might otherwise be able to make within a one year time frame. The Office of Advancement has the ability to accommodate pledge payment schedules suiting most circumstances.

Stocks & Bonds Stocks and bonds are a tax-wise way to make a contribution. Donors are often able to make a larger donation than with cash and these donations usually provide savings on capital gains taxes. Depending upon your individual tax situation, you may receive an income tax deduction for full fair market value. Be sure to discuss this type of donation with your financial advisor or broker.

Real Estate Given the dynamic real estate market over the past several years, a donation of real estate may be beneficial to both the donor and to Moreau Catholic. In order to continue our mission, Moreau Catholic will consider on a caseby-case basis accepting the gift of a home, vacation property, condominium, apartment complex, undeveloped land, or other real estate.

Paid Up Life Insurance Donors who own paid up life insurance policies that are no longer needed for its original purpose may donate the policy to Moreau Catholic by transferring ownership to the school. Generally, the donor will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value. Discuss this option with your insurance agent.

Wills, Trusts, and Planned Giving Please include Moreau Catholic High School in your estate plans. Inclusion in your will can take several forms: • Designate a specific amount to be directed to the school. • Designate a percentage of your estate to be directed to the school. • Designate the “remainder” portion of your estate that is left over when all other obligations and provisions have been addressed. For document preparation, please use the legal title of the school: Moreau Catholic High School Trained financial advisors can provide you with additional estate planning options that are appropriate for your individual situation. Be sure to contact your attorney or financial advisor to discuss any implications a charitable contribution may have on your taxes and your estate. For more information or to discuss any donation, contact the

Office of Advancement at 510.881.4322.

the 5th Annual Funding Hopes and Dreams Luncheon Moreau Catholic High School is committed to ensuring that all qualified students are afforded the opportunity to become a Mariner and achieve their dreams. Our need-based tuition assistance program provides scholars the life-long benefits of a Catholic, college-preparatory education. Attendees of the 5th Annual Funding Hopes and Dreams Luncheon raised $64,450.00 after hearing keynote speaker, Sam McCracken, special guest speaker Sylvia Chacon and alumnus James Mendoza ’12 address the importance of tuition assistance in the lives of Moreau Catholic students. Thank you to our generous underwriters: the Fremont Bank Foundation, Dave Capurro ’77, Mr. and Mrs. Miguel Leon, AVT Productions and Coach Frank Knight III. Alumnus James Mendoza ’12 provided compelling reasons for supporting the Funding Hopes and Dreams Luncheon. He recounted how tuition assistance shaped his life and continues to positively impact his plans for the future.

(2013-14 Student Fundraiser $113,255.00)

Jasmyn Fletcher ’15 (with President Terry Lee and mother, Michelle) has been the top raffle ticket seller for all four years. This year, she raised $2,210.00. The Annual Moreau Catholic Student Fundraiser invites two weeks of competitive spirit for a good cause. Leaders from student government decide on a theme and select projects that will benefit from the proceeds of raffle ticket sales. Students who sell $150 worth of raffle tickets attend a celebration BBQ. Periodic incentives stoke enthusiasm as do rewards for class participation and homeroom sales.

This year’s theme of 50 Years of Staying Connected was reflected in a T-shirt and logo designed by student Michelle Zeas ’16. Cash prizes totalling $8,500 were distributed to three happy winners of the raffle drawing and Moreau Catholic will benefit from a record breaking $121,425.00 that will enhance campus technology, campus life activities and clubs, and purchase athletic equipment.
