“The foundation for success in the Montini Catholic School Community is cultivated by the financial and volunteer support that we receive from our alumni, parents of alumni, parents of current students, and our friends and benefactors.”

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, ur 47th year at Montini Catholic High School has come to a close. It was a year filled with excitement and great accomplishments but it was also a very difficult year as we dealt with loss of a student and a beloved faculty member. In the fall, we lost Johnny Weiger, Class of 2016 and in the spring Mr. Bob Huntoon. During those difficult times, I could not have been more proud of our immediate and extended school community and how they dealt with these emotional events. Bob and Johnny’s deaths were very difficult for the members of our school community but we responded in a very supportive and caring way to both of the families. It is my firm opionion that these trying times brought us closer and made us stronger. Johnny and Bob will be truly missed but they will not be forgotten. Academically, this school year will go down as one of the best in our school’s history and on the extracurricular front our teams and clubs continue to excel at all levels (see table below). Our Fall Play and Spring Musicals drew sold out audiences. In the area of community service, our students out did themselves. Our students participated in many community service projecrs this past school year Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas and Easter Adopt-a-Family programs, Habitat for Humanity Project over Spring Break, service trips Costa Rica & Honduras and weekly service at local PAD shelters. As we approach our 48th year of Lasallian

Education in the Diocese of Joliet, we are very excited about our Digital Learning Initiative. This year we will be introducing, to our student body, a One to One program utilizing iPad technology. This initiative has been greatly aided and accelerated through a very generous grant from Leigh-Anne Kazma and the Kazma Family. Finally, because of the great assistance we’ve received from our STEM advisory committee (made up of alumni and parents of alumni), we are very excited about the initial stages of establishing our STEM program for our students. While our students are achieveing and our staff and faculty are there to guide them, I need to point out that the foundation for success in the Montini Catholic School Community is cultivated by the financial and volunteer support that we receive from our alumni, parents of alumni, parents of current students, and our friends and benefactors. Recently, I had lunch with a group of alumni and one comment really concerned me. Several in attendance stated that alumni and parents of alumni think the school doesn’t need financial or volunteer support - they read and hear about the campus improvements or the success of the academic and extracurricular programs.

“The perception is everything is fine and other organizations need the help more than Montini.”

truth. We rely on your support financially, as well as through volunteer opportunities. Your donations of time, talent and treasure keep moving the school and our school community in a positive direction. The support we received in our Annual Appeals and Capital Campaigns have laid the foundation for the successes we see today. However, over the last two years we have seen a decline in our Annual Appeal numbers (the number of gifts and the total amount of money raised) and this is concerning. The growth of our Annual Appeal and the success of the Capital Campaign are vital to the future success of our school and the Lasallian Mission of Education at Montini Catholic. So as we begin our 48th year of education on August 15th, I thank the members of our school community for the support and generosity that you have provided and continue to ask that all members of our school community consider how they can support our students and help advance the mission of education at Montini Catholic. “May Jesus Live In Our Hearts...Forever.” Sincerely,

Jim Segredo President

Planned Giving ENSURING TAX BREAKS When you want to support Montini Catholic and collect hefty tax-deductions, consider giving away appreciated assets that you have owned for more than one year. You avoid capital gains tax and earn a tax deduction for your own generosity. That’s a nice WIN-WIN.

Theresalynn (Haynes) O’Connor ’98 and husband, Dan, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Eden Michael. Eden joined the O’Connor family on February 3, 2013. Eden’s cousin, Felicity Joyce, daughter of Stephanie (Haynes) Foege ’02 and husband, Aaron, followed shortly after on March 8th, 2013.

So, let us say you want to make a gift to Montini Catholic of $10,000 worth of stocks or mutual fund shares. You purchased the shares for $4,000. You earn a deduction for the fair market value of $10,000 and you avoid the long-term capital gains tax. Montini Catholic can sell those shares for $ 10,000 and also not owe any tax on that sale. If you held those shares and sold them, they would be worth only $9,100 to you after paying the 15% tax on the $6,000 long-term gain.

OUR SYMPATHIES... To the Tokarski family on the death of Anne Smedinghoff, on April 6, 2013. Anne was working as a US Foreign Service Officer in Kabul, Afghanistan, when her convoy traveling to bring books to school children was attacked. To the Lydon family, including Kari (Lydon) Aldridge ’86 and Tim ‘90, on the passing of their father, Patrick, on May 8, 2013, after an 11 year battle with cancer. Montini Catholic is classified by the IRS as a “50 percent charity”. So, for any 50 percent charity, you can deduct as much as 30 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI) in the year of your gift when you contribute appreciated securities. When your donate CASH, you can deduct 50 percent of your AGI, but with gifts of appreciated assets, you derive a 30 percent deduction. REMEMBER: Keep it simple. Make your appreciated stocks/mutual funds gifts for 50 percent charities such as Montini Catholic AND keep them to NO more than 30 percent of your AGI in any one tax year. These rules can get complicated when making very large charitable contributions to your own favorite charities. So, to be sure you are on a sound footing, do check in with your own tax professional.
