Thanks again to all the coaches, assistant coaches and team moms for all that you do. It’s greatly appreciated! 17

ATHLETICS YOUTH BASKETBALL MCPR offers youth basketball for boys and girls grades 2-7 at local schools for the Auburn, Blacksburg and Eastern Montgomery school districts. A new season is just around the corner! We are currently in the process of securing gym space and will keep an update at www.MontgomeryCountyVa.gov/parks on the Athletics page. Gym space will directly affect the number of teams and participants we will be allowed to register, so we will let you know as soon as possible about the progress. Our league emphasizes fundamental skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and positive adult participation with the goal of providing a fun and rewarding basketball experience where young players can create a bond with the game.

BASKETBALL NOTES • Our league features less restrictive rules than others, allowing players to run up and down the court freely, helping to prepare them for middle school, junior varsity and varsity basketball in the future. • Blacksburg tentatively will practice and play games at the new Price’s Fork Elementary School. East Mont will practice and play at Eastern Montgomery Elementary. Auburn will play at Auburn Elementary and practice at various Christiansburg schools. • Teams will be selected based on a draft of all players (in that location/age group) at the first night of practices. Teams will not carryover from the previous season. • This season a new Parents’ Code of Ethics will be in place to ensure a safe, friendly environment for all. All parents will be expected to sign the new form before his/her child may participate. • There will be no end-of-season tournaments this year.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY ANGELS ALL-STARS - 2011 DISTRICT 6 RUNNER’S UP The Angels all-stars were managed by Rick Boyd and he was helped by Lonnie Raines, Booie DeHart, Mike Hinkley and Robert Ryan. The team competed in the District 6 sub-district tournament at Kiwanis Park in Christiansburg from July 24-27. They started the tournament by beating Christiansburg 8-1, followed that up with a defeat of Radford 11-0, then capped that with a second win against Radford at 10-0, advancing them to the championship series. The series was held at Harkrader Sports Complex in Christiansburg on July 1 and 2 where the Angels played a best of three game series with Carroll County who had won their sub-district bracket. The Angels took game one 7-3, but lost game two 5-0, setting up a decisive game three. The ladies from Carroll County took game three 16-7 and claimed the district title, bringing the Angels of Montgomery County in as the runner’s up. Although not capturing the title, the team had a valuable learning experience and a whole lot of fun! The girls, the coaches, the families and fans will get ready to get ‘em next year! The team - pictured below - is Adyson Huff, Emma Ryan, Courtney Raines, Skylar DeHart, Tori Boyd, Jaylin Shepherd, Lacey Bishop, Emily Scaggs, Mikayla Boyd, Rachel Harding, Leah Harrison and Rebecca Harding.

ATHLETICS MONTGOMERY COUNTY BELLES ALL-STARS - 2011 DISTRICT 6 SPORTSMANSHIP WINNERS The Belles all-stars were all Eastern Montgomery players. This team was the 2010 ponytails tournament runners-up, but moving into the Belles division made it difficult against the much older Giles County and Blacksburg teams they faced in the District 6 tournament held July 8-11 at the Carroll County Recreation Park in Hillsville. They battled valiantly before being eliminated. The girls chose to wear retro uniforms in Columbia blue, white and orange in honor of the old Shawsville High School Shawnees and were by-far the best looking team in the district - maybe even the state! The team was awarded the sportsmanship trophy for their behavior as a team and their fans. The team - pictured below - is Hailey Ferguson, Lauryn Honaker, Tayler Lewis, Abby Linkous, Mikayla Phoenix, Alexus Richardson, Marissa Rubas, Alyssa Sampson, Skylar Shaver and Dakota Shepherd. The team was managed by Robbie Lewis and assisted by Pat Richardson and Richard Shaver.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY AAA ALL-STARS - 2011 DISTRICT 3 SPORTSMANSHIP WINNERS The AAA baseball all-stars participated in the District 3 baseball tournament held July 9-13 at Veteran’s Park in Radford. The team opened the tournament with a setback to Blacksburg, but rebounded to play in a tournament instant classic with Patrick County. Montgomery and Patrick played a 9-inning thriller that saw Montgomery stave off defeat multiple times, eventually winning the marathon game 12-8. The team looked to go extra innings the following day, but came up just short in a 10-9 loss to Christiansburg. Needless to say, it was one wild ride! The AAA all-stars won a trophy for sportsmanship that was presented to the team with the best behavior by players, coaches and fans. The team was managed by Brad Hill and he was assisted by Bill Garren and Claude Miles. The team - pictured below - is Trenton Altizer, Daniel Crawford, Aaron Felty, Vance Garren, Brady Harris, Drew Hill, Austin Kirtner, Trevor Miles, Will Rakes, Alfred Sean, Chance St. Clair and Carter Vance.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY OZONE ALL-STARS - 2011 DISTRICT 3 CHAMPIONS The Ozone all-stars won the 2011 District 3 tournament held at Veteran’s Park in Radford between July 9-14. The core of this team has been doing the all-star thing since they were nine years old and they capped off their Dixie careers in style. The team lost their opener to Blacksburg, 13-7, sending them into the losers’ bracket on day one. From there out, the team defeated Radford 16-1, Patrick County 20-5, Christiansburg 19-4, Blacksburg 18-9 (in a rematch that at one point saw Montgomery down 8-0), and Christiansburg 18-16 in a crazy championship game. Montgomery belted 19 home runs and put on an offensive explosion rarely seen in this age group. This team becomes only the second district champion baseball team in County history. The team earned a spot in the 2011 Dixie Ozone State Tournament held at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem. The team - pictured below - is Dylan Akers, Ryan Albert, Tanner DeHart, Cole Epperly, Shawn Ferrell, Jake Garren, Trenton Harding, Aaric Huff, Lukas Matthews, Hunter Perkins, Adam Quesenberry, Logan Shepherd and Eli Franklin. The team was managed by David Harding and he was assisted by Alan Ferrell and Tim Quesenberry.
