A NOTE TO THE PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE FALL

CLASS OF 2022 . . .

Commencement ceremonies are milestones in the life of a university and in the lives of its extended family members. While in the narrowest sense each graduate is celebrating the mastery of a defined curriculum of intellectual skills and content, we know that the meaning of this commencement celebration will be much broader and deeper than that. Lifelong friendships have been made. Priceless memories will be cherished. New opportunities are within grasp, some of which seemed like mere fantasies just a few short years ago. Excitement is in the air!

For those of us who serve as faculty, staff, alumni, trustees or friends of the University of Montevallo, these commencement ceremonies are a reminder that it is a good thing to include time in our busy schedules to celebrate important achievements and to reflect upon the challenges of tomorrow. Perhaps the greatest gift of a liberal arts education is its power to guide us to wiser decisions during and after those moments of reflection.

On behalf of all of us who comprise the Montevallo family, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Alabama’s public liberal arts university. You belong at Montevallo.

Chris Stewart ’92 Sportscaster, The Crimson Tide Network Commencement Speaker, Dec. 9, 2022

Chris Stewart ’92 has been a broadcaster since 1988 and has spent two decades as The University of Alabama’s men’s basketball play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide Sports Network and filled in this fall for Eli Gold as the play-by-play announcer for Alabama football. On five occasions (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2016) Stewart has been named “Alabama Sportscaster of the Year” by the National Sports Media Association.

In addition to his role as the voice of Crimson Tide basketball, Stewart served as the broadcast host for CTSN’s radio coverage of Crimson Tide football, as the television host of “The Nick Saban Show” and “The Nate Oats Show” on CTSN.

Stewart, a Fairfield native, was the recipient of UM’s Nathalie Molton Gibbons Alumni Achievement Award in 2009 and was a 2021 inductee into the UM Athletics Hall of Fame. Stewart served as the play-by-play announcer for UM Athletics during his pursuit of his bachelor’s degree in mass communication.
