Birding Monterey County was named America’s “Birdiest” County by the American Birding Association after dedicated birders spotted a record 250 species on one weekend in May 2005. “Twitchers,” as these people are known, can join walks in the county’s varied habitats or go out to sea in search of shearwaters, brown pelicans and mergansers. Lake San Antonio is the largest bald eagle winter habitat in Central California. From November to April each year, up to 50 bald eagles descend on the area for some rest and relaxation.

Hiking & Walking Boots were made for walking in towns such as Carmel and Pacific Grove, where an assembly of trails offer everything from gentle strolls to strenuous hikes. At one end of the spectrum is the flat and paved Monterey Recreation Trail that follows the coastline from Castroville to Pacific Grove. Slightly more rugged are the trails of the former Fort Ord and the seven miles of trails in Point Lobos State Reserve, a 1,250-acre preserve right on the ocean, just south of Carmel. Other great hiking spots include Garland Ranch Regional Park, 541 acres flanking the Carmel River and extending into the southeastern Santa Lucia mountain range; Jacks Peak County Park, just above the city of Monterey; Big Sur, which offers dramatic hikes through redwood forests to waterfalls; and Pinnacles National Monument, which has 30 miles of mountain paths through the remote backcountry outside Soledad.
