ozemanites love their dogs. Friendly Fidos are everywhere around these parts, from hiking trails to sidewalks while their owners are in stores and restaurants up and down Main Street. Nearly wherever you go, water bowls are readily available, as are bowls of dog treats at checkout counters. Yes, Bozemanites love their dogs.

For the time being, veterinarians are advising dog owners to steer their canine friends away from areas with high dog density — such as dog parks — until a particularly nasty strain of kennel cough that hit the area last month recedes more fully. That day, of course, will come sooner rather than later. And when it does, the city’s seven off-leash dog parks will once again be a bustling social hub for canines and their humans alike.

PETS

bozeman’s finest with a great and caring staff

G

allatin Veterinary Hospital (GVH) provides cutting edge technology and professional service given with compassion, courtesy and respect. Pets are members of your family; we treat them like members of ours. Accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 2009, GVH was the first hospital in Bozeman to earn this distinction, which is awarded to only 12% of the veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada. AAHA evaluates over 900 of the highest quality standards available in veterinary medicine, including: anesthesia, client service, contagious disease, continuing education, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, examination facilities, housekeeping and maintenance, human resources, laboratory, leadership, medical records, pain management, patient care, pharmacy, referral standards, safety and surgery to ensure the best care for your pet. A significant continuing commitment in providing the best possible care for you and your four-legged family members, AAHA accreditation is a huge undertaking, but at GVH we believe it makes us stronger.

Services Computer Tomography (CT) We are excited to bring the newest and best technology in advanced 3D imaging to GVH. We are the first veterinary hospital in the state of Montana to install the NewTom 5G Vet Cone Beam CT. The technology is so advanced, that many of these machines are placed in universities, such as The University of California at Davis, or in larger cities. Why is this important? Cone beam technology allows equal and, in some cases, better image quality when compared to traditional CT scans. It exposes our patients to less radiation and is completed in a fraction of the time, which means less time under anesthesia. All of our scans can be read by a radiologist that specializes in computer tomography and results are usually available within 24 hours. More information, quicker scans and less anesthesia is a win for our patients. Montana Veterinary Surgical Service (MVSS) MVSS is Montana’s most skilled and experienced small animal surgery referral service. Dr. Mark Albrecht is the only small animal residency trained surgeon in Montana. He is one of the first 50 surgeons in the world to be trained by

Dr. Slocum to do Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies (TPLO) and the first person in Montana to offer TPLO surgeries. In addition, GVH was a beta test site for the Canine Unicompartmental Elbow Procedure (CUE) – a revolutionary treatment for elbow dysplasia. The results of that testing are in publication and show this procedure to significantly help patients with elbow arthritis. In fact, Dr. Albrecht has now preformed this procedure on two of his own Labradors. Dr. Albrecht is a member of the Veterinary Arthroscopy Arthrology Advancement society, or VA3, making him a recognized world leader in veterinary arthroscopy. Dr. Albrecht is an adjunct faculty member of the Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Gallatin Veterinary Hospital is one of the only facilities in Montana approved to directly train the next generation of veterinarians. We also host student veterinarians and veterinary technician students from across the country.

In addition, GVH donates more than $20,000 annually to help pets that can’t help themselves. On a global scale, we are helping build schools for children around the world. We have also donated services to the following shelters: ‡ +HDUW RI WKH 9DOOH\ %R]HPDQ

Pet Emergency Preparedness MYPET.COM Severe weather and natural disasters can occur year-round and, for cat and dog owners, storm safety involves some additional planning. When you have a pet, emergency preparedness becomes a great deal more complex. Whether you live in a place where hurricanes are the danger, or you're more at risk from tornadoes and wildfires, the principles of pet emergency preparedness are basically the same: 1. Make a pet evacuation plan. If you have to evacuate your home, you'll want your pets to go with you. If you don't have a car, find out if there are local emergency services organizations that will help you transport your pet. Research which evacuation shelters will allow you to bring your pets with you in an emergency, and find some additional pet-friendly shelters outside the immediate area in case you have to flee farther afield. 2. Keep a full list of animal shelters, boarding facilities, and even hotels that accept pets during emergency evacuations. Think ahead and make contact with these places before disaster strikes so that you understand their emergency protocol. 3. Identify your pet clearly. Make certain your pet's ID tags are current, and be prepared with medical tape and a permanent marker to label your pet's collar with the location of your emergency shelter. Pets should also be microchipped. That way any animal shelter or veterinarian with a scanner can identify your pet and learn how to get hold of you. For more information visit HomeAgain.com.

Register now! 4. Put together a pet emergency preparedness kit. This should include not only food, water, dishes, medication, and necessary supplies, such as leashes and litter, but also your pet's medical records. 5. Make certain you have secure transport for your pet. If a carrier is impractical, then a good leash and harness will do. It is never a good idea to leave your pet at home during emergency evacuations. However, there are times when evacuation organizations mandate that you leave pets behind for safety reasons. In those circumstances, protect your pet by taking some basic precautions. Leave them in a safe area of the house and provide them with sufficient food and water to last twice as long as you think you might be gone. Prop open or remove the toilet seat and bathroom door so that they will have a good source of clean water. Finally, post a notice on your doors that there are pets inside and include contact

information for both you and your veterinarian. Having a pet as part of your family can be a wonderful experience, but it's one that comes with a great deal of responsibility. Developing a pet emergency preparedness kit and a pet evacuation plan may seem like a lot of work, but in a disaster it could save your beloved animal's life. Quick Tip: Call local animal shelters to find out what area shelters might take your pet in an emergency. If you live in an area particularly prone to large-scale disasters, such as hurricanes, consider finding an out-of-town friend who will take care of your pet if you are displaced long term. For more information about preparing for emergencies, check out the following links: American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)

Caleb Caudle goes electric, with his wife riding shotgun BY SKIP ANDERSON

C

aleb Caudle is a rising star. It’s great, he says, that the TV show Nashville recently included one of his songs in an episode and Rolling Stone tapped him as an “Artist You Need to Know.â€? But, he stresses, he’s not terribly motivated by external validation. He knows that he’s settling into his talents as a singer and a songwriter. If he takes care of that, he VD\V WKH UHVW ZLOO WDNH FDUH RI LWVHOI +LV FRQÂżGHQFH is warranted. He has evolved into an insightful songwriter who’s also a natural-born vocalist. He’s focused and outspoken, and he embraces the Americana label critics have assigned him. On the westward leg of his summer tour, his wife will be riding shotgun as they head from their hometown in North Carolina to Seattle — stopping in Bozeman Aug. 23, to play “Live from the Divideâ€? — and hitting a half-dozen national parks along the way. You’ve been a touring singer/songwriter for nearly 10 years now. Is it what you expected it would be? I’ve been doing it full-time for only about 5 years. Before that, I was a weekend warrior. After my punk rock phase, I JRW LQWR WKH %\UGV DQG %XŕľľDOR 6SULQJÂżHOG DQG WKDW led to Gram Parsons and Merle Haggard. What about now? Who is advancing the art form forward? As far as contemporary people, I really love Robert Ellis. I really like Erin Rae, and she sings on my next record. I also got hooked on this reggae band the Frighteners out of Brooklyn. The National, too. I UHDOO\ ORYH WKHP , ORYH -RVK 5LWWHU +LV ZULWLQJ LV RQ a level with no one else, really. You’ll be playing “Live from the Divideâ€? in Bozeman Aug. 23. Will you be visiting national parks while you’re out here Montana? On this tour, we’re doing Yellowstone, Olympic, *ODFLHU -RVKXD 7UHH &UDWHU /DNH DQG RQ WKH ZD\ back we’re going to hit Badlands. Last year, we did

Arches, Canyon Lands, Bryce Canyon and Death Valley. I buy a pass every year. There’s something to be said for our national parks being our country’s best idea. It’s the only thing that’s not being ruined by man in our country. It’s a generational thing, like baseball: it goes through time and it doesn’t really change very much. It’s disgraceful that people are trying to change that. It’s all money-driven, and if that’s your number-one focus, I guess it makes sense. But it seems embarrassing to me.

The title cut from Carolina Ghost, your current album, takes a long-view look at a long-term loving relationship. There’s a real warmth and tenderness there. What was the inspiration for that song? Me and my girlfriend at the time — now my wife — we went for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway one afternoon and she was driving and I was writing [lyrics] on my phone. About a week later, I took a ORRN DW WKHP DQG UHDOL]HG WKHUH ZDV VRPH JRRG VWX྾ in there.

In the span of just a few short weeks, Rolling Stone named you an “Artist You Need to Know, and your song “Borrowed Smiles was featured on an episode of the TV show Nashville. That’s a pretty good spring. It’s pretty cool. My last record had already been out for about a year, so there wasn’t a big media push at the moment, so it felt very organic. They came to us. It’s cool that it happened organically. Nashville was a good paycheck, and I was able to pay for a new transmission, which I really needed. But, I already knew that what I was doing is worthwhile, so I didn’t need a TV show to validate me. But it was really nice and gave me a pep in my step for a day or two. But that’s a byproduct of the bigger picture that what I’m working on.

Was that your parents in the video for “Carolina Ghost? It was. I wasn’t as tight with my parents as I am now for a while. But about three years ago, I quit drinking and that led me back to having a good relationship with them again. My drinking was really a problem. So, now we’re tight. They say one day at a time, and they mean it.

Your name often comes up in the same breath as Aaron Lee Tasjan, Margo Price and Jason Isbell. That’s some pretty strong company you’re keeping. Is that a proper categorization of you as a singer/songwriter? I think so, yes. Aaron Lee Tasjan also belongs in that list of people who are pushing things. Margo DQG -DVRQ WRR 7KRVH JX\V PDNH PH ZDQW WR SXVK the envelope. I’ve known Margo since she was SOD\LQJ ZLWK %X྾DOR &ORYHU 2QH WLPH VKH JDYH PH a really hard time about using a capo when we were swapping songs at someone’s house. Hell, I still use a capo and I’m not budging on that. We’re all looking for that balance of classic, timeless music while pushing the envelope. Nowadays, genres are weird. The only question that matters is whether the song is good. We’re in Americana because we write and sing our own songs — country, as a genre, has D EDG FRQQRWDWLRQ DURXQG LW 7KH VWX྾ RQ FRXQWU\ UDGLR LV UHDOO\ EDG DQG WKH VWX྾ RQ $PHULFDQD UDGLR is really good. Margo and Aaron are really working hard right now — touring, touring, touring.

Have you been to Montana before? I have never been to Montana. I’m absolutely excited. My wife and I will be staying in a cabin in Bozeman. So we’ll be in town for a few days. I think of you as an acoustic guitar guy. But you recently acquired a Telecaster. Are you shifting gears? I am shifting gears. Because, if you’re not, then why are you doing it? The Tele just seemed right. I just played a show two days ago where I played a full show on electric guitar. It was awesome, I loved it and there will be more of it. I’ve written a couple of new songs on electric guitar, and that was fun too.
