Child of America Award Each year, Carver honors leaders in the fight for educational opportunity and a just society with its Child of America award. We used this occasion to honor Dick Whitcomb with an exceptional Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2013. All honorees are exceptional role models for our youth, who through their thought, word and deeds inspire us all.
Charles Burns, the 2016 Child of America Honoree Charles Burns is President Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Carver Foundation of Norwalk. His commitment to the Carver mission began in 1975. He served as an esteemed President of the Board of Directors on two occasions. His outstanding community service through the years is devoted to helping our community’s young people. Charles and Barbra Cox initiated and implemented Carver’s first Child of America Award Dinner and Fundraiser fifteen years ago. Charles and his wife Elizabeth chaired the 8th Child of America Gala. Charles Burns grew up in North Carolina and graduated from high school at 16 years of age. He attended North Carolina A&T State University during which time he joined Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. Thus, began his life of service to his community. He earned his B.S. Degree in Biological Science with honors from A&T and completed postgraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Bridgeport. After graduating from A&T, he served in the US Army for two years specializing in research and development while stationed at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. He retired from Clairol, Inc. after thirty years having held several positions beginning as a chemist and then specializing in, and managing the company’s quality control initiatives. Charles is an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Norwalk, where he participates in the Men’s Ministry, holds a leadership position in the Rising Stars Ministry and is a Trustee, having served on the Trustee Board for over twenty years. Charles is also a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Boule). Charles served on the Board of Directors of Family and Children Services of Norwalk and then Stamford. Additionally, he served on the Boards of NEON and the United Way of New Canaan. By way of example, through the Boule he assists with raising funds and granting scholarships and is hands on with mentoring high school boys in Stamford. Through the Rising Stars Ministry, along with his wife, he leads a young robotics team that competes in the annual Lego® challenge. He also organizes activities throughout the year for his Church’s youth. Charles met his wife Elizabeth while at A&T. They have two children, Cassandra and Corey, and two grandsons, Connor (University of Miami) and Jordan (Saxe Middle School). Charles is a passionate golfer when the Carver community is not making a claim on his time and leadership! 6
Craig Glover, Gala 2016 Master of Ceremonies Craig Glover, a member of the Carver Board of Directors, is the Chief Executive Officer of Norwalk Community Health Center. Mr. Glover previously served as president and chief executive officer of a Midwestern community health center from 2011 through 2013 and vice president of a St. Louis-based community health center from 2004 until 2011. His other professional experiences include various leadership positions in information technology. Mr. Glover holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration from Fontbonne University.
