Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska is where cruising really comes into its own. And as travellers seek more immersive bucket-list experiences, expedition cruising is quickly becoming the fastest growing sector in the industry, with search results for sailings to Antarctica up by 50% in 2022 compared to 2019, according to Cruise Lines International Association. In turn, this has prompted luxury small ship brands to expand their fleets, with Seabourn Cruises, in particular, introducing its much-awaited PC6 Polar Class ship, Seabourn Venture. The first of the line’s two new purpose-built expedition ships, Seabourn Venture sits close to the brand’s ultraluxury sentiment, which as a result has taken expedition cruising to new levels. “Seabourn guests are as passionate about discovery as they are about travelling in ultraluxury,” commented former President Josh Leibowitz on the launch. “Seabourn Venture offers a new type of expedition experience, allowing our guests to discover the magnificence from the Arctic to the Antarctic.” Constructed by Genoa-based shipbuilder T Mariotti, the

Oceania Vista OCEANIA CRUISES Oceania Cruises unveils the first of its new Allura-class vessels, where interiors by Studio Dado channel a sense of quiet luxury. Words: Rebecca Barnes • Photography: © Nick Tortajada

T

he upper premium category is by no means a crowded place in cruise, but it’s the space in which Oceania Cruises floats quite happily. Yet this description

perhaps downplays the line’s luxurious new ship Vista, which has been designed from the top down by Miami-based specialists Studio Dado. The first of two new Allura-class vessels and with a guest capacity of 1,200, Vista is the line’s largest ship to-date and Oceania’s first newbuild in over a decade. With the design team briefed to bring a fresh perspective for the new class, the shared vision was to take a quiet luxury approach. So while the brand’s core values remain, interiors nod towards a refined and understated aesthetic, in line with passenger demand for laidback luxury at sea. The ship’s unveiling is also a landmark moment for Studio Dado. Appointed as the main architect, Oceania Vista marks the first time the firm has worked on an entire vessel as a newbuild, having designed the majority of suites and staterooms as well as the dining venues, lounges, bars, pool decks and public spaces. Oceania Vista is more spacious than its stablemates, and Studio Dado’s Founding Partner Yohandel Ruiz believes there’s a synergy between the common spaces on board, allowing them to relate to one another in a way that creates a seamless journey through the ship. “Sometimes, you can have as many as five or six architects working on a

055

VOYAGE ON WATER

ship, which can leave spaces feeling disjointed and disparate; on Vista you don’t have that because we were able to curate the entire guest experience,” he shares. From curated artworks to bespoke detailing, the designers drew inspiration from the ocean as well as the various ports of call along the route, choreographing a guest journey that leans into understated elegance without the stuffiness of the past. “Staying true to the brand was important to us, while delivering a design that speaks of the future of cruise,” says Ruiz. On arrival, the ship’s atrium is a striking space, featuring a custom-made crystal chandelier that depicts a shoal of fish. The sculptural piece is set in the centre of a dramatic spiral staircase alongside lighting and carpets designed bespoke by Studio Dado, and sectioned wall paneling mimicking the chambers of a shell. Crucially, the quiet luxury blueprint goes further than being an aesthetic masterpiece – it’s as much about how guests feel in each space as what they see and touch. And for a cruise line created by foodies for foodies, it’s unsurprising

From Sea to Sky While private aviation can transport passengers anywhere in the world, so too can a good meal. It’s for this reason, that VistaJet established its Private Dining programme, inviting chefs from around the world to create exclusive dishes to be served only on board its fleet. For its latest culinary adventure, the private airline has partnered with Greek seafood restaurant Estiatorio Milos to bring a taste of the Mediterranean to the skies. Passengers on board one of the airline’s 360 aircraft can indulge in signature dishes from Milos founder Costas Spiliadis, such as a tender lobster salad, made with fresh dill, spring onions and baby fennel, doused in olive oil and a dash of Seven Stars Greek Metaxa. And for those who develop a taste for Greece, VistaJet is offering the opportunity to take a culinary voyage aboard Milos at Sea. Curated by Private World, a division of the business dedicated to creating bespoke travel experiences, the yachting expedition explores the slow food movement, sustainable sourcing and the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean, with cooking lessons, fishing and cheese and wine tastings along the way. “We are uncompromising when it comes to in-flight dining and believe that food at altitude should taste as good as food

expertise to the skies. The award-winning mixologist has teamed up with British Airways once again to bring a one-of-a-kind martini experience to Concorde Room at London Heathrow. Inspired by the motion of flight, the Turbine Martini is a contemporary take on the classic cocktail, combining signature ingredients such as vermouth and bitters with the airline’s new gin partner, Aviation American Gin. The concoction is prepared in a bespoke mixer developed by adventure specialists Bremont in collaboration with Callum Design. Crafted from machined stainless steel, the specialist equipment features a turbine-inspired design, with a motorised mixing paddle engineered to stir the cocktail at the perfect speed of 120-160 revolutions per minute. British Airways previously collaborated with Mr Lyan on its lounge cocktail menu, with two serves specially created in celebration of the airline’s heritage. “Over the past couple of years, I have worked closely with British Airways to create a variety of unique drinks that celebrate the motion of flight, and we have taken this one step further to develop a modern version of the ultimate classic cocktail, the martini,” comments Chetiyawardana. “Using expertise from every partner, we’ve balanced the perfect combination of ingredients, aeration and temperature to highlight Aviation American Gin’s unique profile. Through our precision-engineered mixer, we created the Turbine Martini to celebrate the bespoke nature and wonder of the classic drink, with a brand-new contemporary twist.”

Style in Space It has already been revealed that crew on the Artemis III mission will lounge in Philippe Starck-designed surroundings and sip Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar champagne, so it’s only natural that they’ll need appropriate attire for such an occasion too. Fortunately, Axiom Space has it covered, having joined forces with Prada on NASA’s lunar spacesuits. Thought to be the world’s first partnership between a commercial space company and an Italian luxury fashion house, the venture will see Prada’s engineers work alongside the Axiom Space systems team throughout the design process, developing materials and styles that will protect against the unique challenges of space and the lunar environment. “We are thrilled to partner with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” comments Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space. “Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factor considerations absent from legacy spacesuits.” Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director, concludes: “The constantly forward-thinking ethos of Prada for humanity has broadened to this desire of adventure to brave new horizons: space. We are honoured to be a part of this historic mission with Axiom Space. Our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology and design know-how will now be applied to the design of a spacesuit for the Artemis era. It is a true celebration of the power of human creativity and innovation to advance civilisation.”

Dressed to Impress Since its establishment in 1933, Air France has gone above and beyond for its passengers, bringing technology, innovation and comfort to the cabin. Now, as it celebrates 90 years of flight, the airline has tapped into the worlds of architecture and design, travel and haute couture to showcase the French elegance of je ne sais quoi. As part of its anniversary celebrations, Air France has unveiled a new collection of dresses that trace its history through the medium of fashion. Created by Xavier Ronze, Costume Designer at l’Opéra National de Paris, each dress commemorates a different aspect of the airline’s identity: from uniforms, cabin interiors and in-flight dining to travel routes, aircraft technology and advertising campaigns. The collection – on display in an exclusive exhibition at Galeries Lafayette – is an invitation for viewers to explore the influences on Air France’s long history of service, with dresses fabricated from items that have shaped the company’s offer through the ages. Ronze’s creations are on show alongside a selection of the finest Air France heritage items, as well as new collectors’ pieces, celebrating 90 years of elegance in the air.
