MORPHOTEL ENTERED BY GIANLUCA SANTOUSOSSO Designed by Italian architect Gianluca Santosuosso, MORPHotel is a hospitality concept that offers guests the opportunity to experience a stay in a floating hotel. Based around a vertebral spine that allows the structure to adapt its shape according to the weather conditions and site morphology, the hotel moves around the world, constantly travelling at slow speeds according to the sea currents. MORPHotel can also be docked for short or long periods in coastal cities encountered on its journey. The hotel’s public areas, including the lobby

and restaurant, are located along the central axis, which also features a ‘linear park’ that serves as a connection between the different spaces. The two ends of the structure contain the guestrooms, conceived as individual capsules attached to the organism’s spine and designed to varying degrees of luxury. According to Santosuosso, MORPHotel also aims to be self-sufficient. Energy generated from solar panels and tidal flows power the hotel and is also used to desalinate sea water and filter harvested rainfall. In addition, an onsite floating farm contains a vegetable garden and space to rear animals.

A

n impressive haul of medals and a dose of British pride weren’t the only successes of last Summer’s Olympic Games. London’s hotels prospered from the influx of visitors, reporting RevPAR increases and phenomenol profit. But as the event drew to a close, there was one question on everyone’s lips: Will London 2012 leave a lasting legacy? Twelve months on and all the signs are pointing in the right direction. New hotel development is showing no signs of slowing and current performance is strong. In addition, The London Legacy Development Corporation has been established to oversee the regeneration legacy from the Games, ensuring that the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park serves as a recreational venue that helps attract more domestic and international visitors to the city.

The most significant development under way in London – and one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe – is Nine Elms on the South Bank. The £15 billion transformational area between Lambeth Bridge and Chelsea Bridge includes Battersea Power Station, Vauxhall town centre, the new US Embassy and New Covent Garden Market. The area will be home to a wealth of iconic buildings – including an ultra-modern tall building cluster – designed by worldleading architects Rafael Viñoly, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Sir Terry Farrell, Allies and Morrison and Kieran Timberlake. In addition, Gehry Partners has been appointed together with Foster + Partners to design Phase 3 at Battersea Power Station, otherwise known as the High Street. This will serve as a new town centre for Nine Elms on the South

Bank and comprise 1,200 residential units, 350,000ft2 of retail and restaurant space and a 200-room hotel. It will be Frank Gehry’s first building in London. The development, complete with new transport links and pedestrian zones, is also attracting interest from the rest of the world. Chinese investment and development conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group is the latest investor to take a stake in the regeneration project having agreed to purchase the One Nine Elms development site. Planning permission has been granted to replace the largely derelict 1970’s office block with two new towers that will form part of a tall building cluster. Designed by KPF, the scheme will include a new public square lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, as well as London’s first Wanda hotel.
