he Climate Pledge Arena is a bold, ambitious venue that has revitalised a historic landmark, provided a spectacular home for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, WNBA’s Seattle Storm and a whole host of concerts and events. Not only that, it’s poised to become the world’s first arena to earn a net zero carbon certification from the International Living Future Institute. We’re delighted that it’s our cover story - and we’ve taken an in-depth look at the design and technology installed at this first-of-its-kind arena. Despite an ever-increasing volume of TV and digital streaming choices, there is no doubt that when experiencing the memorable moments that fans crave, nothing can beat attending games in-person. For many, the matchday atmosphere generated at a sports stadium cannot be topped, yet for others, the drawbacks of attending sporting events in the flesh is deterring even the most passionate of spectators. Fan disorder at Euro 2020, coupled with reports of chaotic and dangerous scenes outside the Stade de France ahead of the Champions League Final in May, only serve to remind us why secure and speedy venue access remains a priority. In Paris, huge queues at entry points led to thousands of fans with genuine tickets being denied access to the stadium, while others without attempted to force entry. While the finger of blame pointed to police mismanagement, some reports state that as many as seven out of ten tickets checked at the first venue perimeter were counterfeit. Incidents like this are some of the biggest operational headaches for sports or entertainment venues. Access to venues and cash-handling procedures typically involve lots of manual processes and operational demands.

Fans don’t need to carry cash with them, or reach for their bank card or phone, because they can use their wearable item to make quick contactless payments. This massively reduces queuing times both outside and inside the venue. Furthermore, because the fan wears the item, it’s far less likely to be lost or misplaced compared to cards or phones which can easily fall out of pockets or bags.

There is the need to ensure that ticketholders are quickly and correctly identified. Eliminating the possibility of counterfeit tickets being used is another. Wearable tech – the convergence of contactless payment and digital ID Wearable tech – like a key fob, ring, wristband or even clothing – solves all these problems by offering contactless payment and digital ID verification through one convenient item that goes wherever the user goes. It drastically speeds up entry and transaction times with all transactions encrypted and secured through tokenisation.

Ground-breaking mobile personalisation technology brings the convenience of wearable tech right into the hands of the customer, wherever they are, through their iPhone or Android device. It allows consumers to link their payment card to their wearable item, which can be instantly and remotely configured over-the-air with their ID and ticket data. The wearable object is read digitally at the venue entrance to grant access in a fraction of the time it would take to manually verify ticketholders.

The time is right for wearable tech to go

The wearable payment devices market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 29% between 2022-2032, with an estimated market valuation of US$13.43 billion just in 2022 alone. This is being driven by the rapidly growing Internet of Things network connecting payment applications, access control and brand consumer engagement across an expected 41 billion devices by 2027. Use cases for wearable tech in sports clubs and venues are set to be a huge part of this growth. The huge business benefits for sports venues looking to streamline costs and the opportunities created by wearable tech to forge even deeper, real-time interactive bonds between fans and their clubs, will transform live game attendance and provide a healthy boost to clubs’ future fortunes.

Manymainstreambusinesses have previously been deterred from offering wearable tech due to perceptions about high costs and complexities. Previously, any chip-enabled item, like a plastic card or other form factor, requiring personalisation or provisioning with user data, would need to go through the costly, time-consuming process of being personalised by the manufacturer before being delivered to the business or club, and then delivered to the user. But who wants to wait 7 to 10 days to receive a card in the mail? New innovations in wearable technologies mean providers can handle the personalisation of the NFC chip from end to end, without the need for the manufacturer or sports club to do anything. This saves vast amounts of money for the brand, and gets items into the hands of fans in a fraction of the time, remotely and instantly. Data can now be provisioned into a wide range of items, like collectible sports merchandise, to stop counterfeit fraud.

And business is booming; over the last year Quality has been responsible for some of the world’s most prominent OTT sports productions, including the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby Europe Super Cup tournament, the FIBA BCLA 2022 basketball tournament and the South American Rugby Federation’s Pan American 7s tournament at the National Stadium in Costa Rica. Its live coverage of the World Cup Qualifiers in Africa for FIFA’s 12 million YouTube subscribers is a perfect example of how remote workflows can benefit live production. With limited OB resources and large distances to cover, Africa is a challenging territory for live sports.

The broadcast industry has experienced some seismic shifts over the last few years and sports is where we’ve seen the biggest Inimpact.fact, live sports has always been the biggest driver of revenue and new technology in broadcasting. In recent years, OTT service providers have started flexing their muscles by wrestling more live sports broadcasting from the traditional OTA space. At the same time, clubs are developing their own streaming channels with prerecorded and live programming from a variety of sporting venues. Sports fans have never had so much choice. In the competition for eyeballs the industry’s growing confidence in IP connectivity has encouraged more flexibility, and the ability to geographically separate the production of live events has given broadcasters the confidence to adopt remote production model from stadiums all over the world. But this particular game is not new. Spanish content specialist Quality Media Producciones has been taking advantage of remote broadcasting efficiencies since 2017, and Dejero has been with them from the very start. In fact, Dejero’s EnGo mobile video transmitters were central to Quality’s first ever remote IP production in August 2017.

Dejero’s EnGo transmitters combine multiple IP networks, including cellular and/or satellite, to achieve reliable connectivity for real-time collaboration from virtually anywhere, such as a stadium in the middle of a congested city or a remote venue on the side of a mountain. “Everyone else involved in a production like this stays at home or in the office,” said Pablo Reyes, Chief Production Officer & Partner at Quality. “The EnGo is able to transmit high-quality live camera feeds in real-time, without interruption, back to the hub for packaging and distribution. 60-75 percent of the production team now remain at the hub, saving thousands on hotel bills, airfares, logistics and expenses, let alone the time it takes for a full production crew to travel there and back.

“The EnGo is incredibly simple to use – you just turn it on and go.

Quality’s remote production model meant they could cover games with just six on-site camera crew at football stadiums in multiple locations like Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. Around 200,000 people watched the live stream on FIFA’s YouTube channel as Senegal beat Egypt on penalties at the 50,000 capacity Diamniadio Olympic Stadium in Dakar, and with minimal personnel on site.

“We’re currently working with a customer to plan the live coverage of a major US sports league,” added Pablo. “With a traditional OB truck, the cost per game would average $35,000, but with our remote production model, which includes multiple EnGo transmitters, we can reduce that cost to $20,000. With 80 games in a season they could be looking at a saving of around As$1.2m.”consumers seek out more content on their favourite teams, and connectivity opens more doors for individual clubs and stadium venues to develop their own channels as revenue streams, remote production will continue to provide companies like Quality the opportunity to deliver more for less. “As more professionals are working in high frame rate 4K and UltraHD, especially for sports and prime time productions, 12G-SDI is gaining technological favor. About 90 percent of our clients working in UltraHD are using native 12G-SDI tools,” Grund added. “It gives them the power and bandwidth required to move UltraHD signal content through the cable, still keeping the flexibility to work in HD should the project call for it.”

ToolsOnAir builds its Linux systems in Vienna and the US, and ships them to customers with an AJA Corvid 88, Corvid 44 12G BNC, or Corvid 44 BNC card integrated. “For clients working in HD and UltraHD, we use the Corvid 88, as it offers eight inputs, enabling eight for HD or two for UltraHD via quad-link connection. In other scenarios, where four inputs are required we use a Corvid 44 12G BNC or Corvid 44 BNC,” noted Schabasser.

ToolsOnAir turned heads when it launched the first Mac-based client-server ingest, playout, and real-time graphics solutions for broadcast, in 2010 at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention in Las Vegas, NV. Since then, the Austrian solutions developer has expanded its line of products to support live automated playout and live closed captioning, and launched a Linux-based ingest solution. Broadcasters, production facilities, houses of worship, government organizations, and educational institutions worldwide use ToolsOnAir technology to accelerate audio and video ingest and playout for production with an assist from AJA I/O hardware.

Depending upon the customer’s preferred operating system, ToolsOnAir solutions are either built by a reseller or systems integrator, or ship turnkey. Mac customers typically acquire the necessary Mac, AJA I/O hardware (either PCI or Thunderbolt), and a Sonnet PCIe enclosure for PCI cards, and ToolsOnAir provides the software licenses. “Our Mac-based solution supports a range of I/O hardware, but we always recommend AJA Io and KONA solutions. We recently had a Norwegian customer use multiple AJA Io X3 in their setup, and I suspect they won’t be the last,” said ToolsOnAir Head of Operations Manuel Grund. “Io X3 is a perfect I/O box for HD needs with Thunderbolt 3 support and feature additions via AJA Desktop Software updates. It is modern, quiet, and has nearly everything imaginable, including a multi-viewer feature and many audio input options. It’s also easy to get started; you plug it in, install the drivers, and you’re off.”

“Overall, our customers are enthusiastic about their experiences with these cards, and we’re seeing more demand for 12G-SDI from customers working in UltraHD.”

Considering the prominent role of I/O technology in ToolsOnAir’s line of work, the company has been an AJA Developer Partner since its inception. For an application requiring easy transport, Hedrick finds the CV344 to be a perfect option. According to Hedrick, the set up includes the following gear. “The CV344 is situated on the tripod mount of a Tilta V-mount plate, which has a D tap on it,” Rob said. “I have an adapter that brings the D tap into the Marshall. The output of that also has another power connector that powers a fiber optic transceiver. So, the camera and the fiber are all powered off that one IDX DUO-C198 191Wh high-load battery, which gives us 22 hours of runtime. You don’t have to run any additional power to it, and you can have a thousand feet of fiber. The really nice thing is that with the Marshall on the plate with a battery, the whole thing fits in two or three Pelican cases. That’s really efficient.”

“Drag racing fans love content and love to watch racing,” added Rob. “In an effort to deliver more content, we started doing more non-professional sportsman races that are not typically covered at a national event. The sportsman side is broken into seven divisions with lots of racing across the country. We came up with the idea of Divisional Streaming Kits and are providing a streaming fly pack for each one of those divisional race groups so that that content can be streamed to our OTT channels. Each one of those kits will have three CV344’s in it and it will move from event to event with the divisional director. This initiative will bring us up to doing about 60 events across the association.”

As an Emmy Award-winning content specialist and tech manager, Rob Hedrick has an extensive background in live sports and television production. Rob serves as the Director of Production for The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and manages its live video solutions for broadcast and digital OTT delivery. With a network and digital broadcast schedule that includes over 50 events annually, Hedrick has come to rely on the CV344 Compact POV Camera from Marshall Electronics to help capture all the NHRA’s exciting quarter mile drag racing action.

Founded in 1951 by Wally Parks, the NHRA is a drag racing organization that sets rules in drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. Hedrick and his team have found that drag racing fans are incredibly loyal to the sport regardless of what level of racing it is.

hen the City of Seattle set out to reimagine and redevelop the historic landmark originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair, not many would have expected such a bold, first-of-its-kind venue. However, the Climate Pledge Arena is just that. Climate Pledge Arena is the region’s largest arena — an entirely new venue built under an existing roof — that cultivates the ultimate experience for fans of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, WNBA’s Seattle Storm, concerts and other events. With Amazon as the arena’s naming rights partner, its sustainable design approach meets The Climate Pledge, a global initiative that commits signatories to net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040. Climate Pledge Arena is poised to become the world’s first arena to earn a net zero carbon certification from the International Living Future Institute. Populous collaborated with the owners, a public-private partnership between Oak View Group, Seattle Kraken Hockey and Seattle Center, as well as project manager CAA ICON and construction partner MA Mortenson to bring the sustainable design and historic vision to life. The Populous design enabled the 740,000-square-foot arena to employ numerous sustainable practices and operations. The arena relies solely on renewable energy sources — including on-site solar energy designed on the atrium roof — to power the facility. Populous contributed to a fully-integrated transportation plan that subsidizes mass transit for fans. The site design provides space for electric vehicle charging stations and bike valet services, while also building strong connections with the monorail. Populous designed the facility to support water conservation systems — such as harvesting rainwater from the roof to turn it into the greenest ice in the NHL — and zero waste initiatives. These sustainable design strategies set a new bar for the global sports and events industry. This multifunctional venue in the heart of Seattle Center harkens back to its original facility, which was built for the 1962 World’s Fair. The design was centred on revitalising the landmark arena, and honouring its original design intent while activating and enhancing a pedestrian-focused plan. The former arena was a flat-floor, column-free pavilion with an entirely glass façade allowing visitors to see inside. Populous’ design preserves many of these character-defining features and draws from the firm’s vast experience of creating meaningful spaces for people to gather. In addition to the challenge of designing a carbon neutral arena, Populous was challenged to maintain the preservation of the 59-year-old historic roof designed by Paul Thiry, the father of architectural modernism in the Pacific Northwest. The new construction required the 44-million-pound roof to be suspended above the site while the new arena was built underneath. To increase the size of the arena to 740,000 square feet — approximately twice the size of the former venue — and give the venue 360-degree pedestrian access, it was necessary to dig 16 feet deeper than the previous 1995 renovation that

Populous worked with more than 30 corporate partners to create uniquely-branded spaces throughout Climate Pledge Arena. With Amazon’s naming rights to the arena, the venue features grab-and-go and self-checkout markets, and four innovative food and beverage environments featuring Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology. These spaces offer graphics and branding opportunities customized to specific partners. The clubs and premium spaces are also branded, from the event-level Verizon Lounge that features artwork and lighting to reflect the network’s coverage, to the entire PitchBook level of the arena, which includes original art as well as data-inspired graphics to communicate PitchBook’s brand identity.

The arena boasts 28,175 square feet of digital signage, the most in the world for a sports and entertainment venue. The immersive LED experience throughout the user journey displays wayfinding, events and partner promotion, and atmospheric imagery that is customisable for each event.

Each level of Climate Pledge Arena has a different colour of wayfinding signage, which harkens to natural features as the levels go deeper underground — from the light blue on the top level to mimic the atmosphere, to a muted orange to reflect the earth on the main concourse level, to a dark gray for the lower level.

Populous also designed an expansive and universallyaccessible outdoor plaza to surround the arena, providing year-round open and green space within the Seattle Center campus. With 360 degrees of landscaped plazas surrounding the venue, effectively placing the arena within a picturesque landscaped park — a first for an urban professional arena in the United States — Climate Pledge Arena is more accessible to all, links local neighbourhoods, and restores the original relationship between surrounding plazas and the building. Populous collaborated with a diverse group of Pacific Northwest artists to coordinate eight unique public art installations for the plazas, establishing playful touch points for community engagement year-round. Populous’ design also preserves the site’s longest-living tenants: 67 London Plane trees that hold landmark status from the 1962 World’s Fair. These trees maintain a massive canopy on the site, aid in carbon capture and connect surrounding neighbourhoods with the expansive Seattle Center campus.

The Climate Pledge brand is further strengthened through a 200-foot living wall with live plants and LED activations on the main concourse — a vision that Amazon and Populous brought to life — creating social media-friendly content opportunities. Egress tunnels and other LED displays throughout the arena blur the lines between the structure and the outdoors with graphic imagery.

Behind this new design lies a thorough analysis of on-ice and on-court action for hockey and basketball, spectator and athlete sightlines, and flexibility for shows and concerts. The result is a pair of distinctly-shaped video displays that place digital content in an ideal location for spectators, improving the atmosphere and connection between fans on opposite sides of the seating bowl. Setting this forwardthinking design innovation under the historic roof honours the legacy of the building, which was to showcase futuristic ideas and exhibits as part of the “World of Tomorrow” theme of the 1962 World’s Fair. These configurations each form a triangular shape with three displays each – two sideline-facing displays and one endfacing, curved display. Both end displays measure roughly 25 feet high by 46 feet wide and the four sideline displays measure roughly 23 feet high by 43 feet wide. Each hanging display configuration forms 2,720 square feet of digital space to show live video, instant replays, statistics and game information, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages.

TheArena.installation features 28,175 square feet of digital signage totalling more than 145 million pixels and dual hanging display configurations featuring 2,720 square feet each. No sporting venue in the world has more LED displays, including 173 displays outside the main seating bowl of the arena.

This includes a large column wrap, atrium bridge displays, The Climate Pledge Living Wall feature and east concourse picture frame features.

To create the faux-neon look, the insides of the letters were painted white to reflect light and then assembled in a sandwich-configuration, with one of the three other paint Withcolours.14 locations across North America, a shorter-than-usual timeframe prompted Jones Sign to build the framework to hold the 72 letters at its Green Bay, WI headquarters and fabricate the letters at its plant outside Reno, NV. With a team of certified welders, Jones Sign was able to accommodate changes and deliver the sign in record time. Installation of the crown ID marked a milestone in the construction and development of the eagerly anticipated Climate Pledge Arena and its crowning sign. With its beaming letters visually nestled among snow-capped mountains and the Space Needle, the Climate Pledge Arena’s new crown ID has created an indelible impression on the Seattle skyline.

Jones Sign Company assisted in brightening the Seattle skyline with the installation of a four-sided building sign for the new Climate Pledge Arena. The “crown ID” was installed with the assistance of a Blackhawk helicopter atop the landmark 1962 World’s Fair roof, which will covers the arena on the Seattle Center campus. Since 1910, Jones Sign Company has provided industryleading design, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of signage, lighting and architectural elements – making them the perfect partner for Climate Pledge Arena’s new sign. With a commitment to sustainability to match the long-term goals of Climate Pledge Arena, Jones Sign manufactured and installed the more than 12-tonne sign in alignment with the arena’s zero-carbon mission. In particular, the new crown ID is illuminated using faux-neon LED lighting, which uses 60 percent less power than a traditional neon sign of similar “Neonisscale. an energy hog and high maintenance because you have to change out the lights,” said Jeff Goodfellow, Operations Manager for Jones Sign Reno. “LED will last tens of thousands of hours. This is a vanguard step for the Climate Pledge movement, rather than the signs of old. It’s better for the planet.”

“I didn’t realise the excitement level until I arrived in town,” said Bob Lepak, VP of Manufacturing and Installation for Jones Sign on the day the crown ID was installed. “I really started to get the vibe with people walking by the sign [stationed on the Fountain lawn]. I haven’t experienced people being so interested in the signs as this week and especially today. It’s a privilege to be part of it.”

“Most new arenas want to have ice projection in their building if they’re doing hockey. Climate Pledge is a beautiful arena with lots of new technology and we wanted to include ice projection to create another sensory touch point for fans,” said Lamont Buford, VP, Entertainment Experience & Production, who alongside Jonny Greco, SVP, Entertainment, led the Kraken Hockey’s creative team.

“Prior relationships and experience with Barco coming through on other projects made teaming up with them again an easy choice,” said Jonny. “The Barco team wanted the Kraken to have the tools to tell our story and they were advocates for us through the entire process. The customer service from the Barco crew was more like a collaboration of creatives who wanted to see your vision come to life than a seller/buyer relationship.”

“This was the first year for the team and first year for the arena, so everything was so time compressed, especially at the beginning. It was amazing, even with the construction delays, that we pulled it off and got everything installed and operational before the opening of the season.”

Still, the arena posed some challenges for projection. Dean Roberts, Technical Operations Manager for Diversified, said: “It was a great challenge to project onto the shining ice as ice isn’t the best projection surface. The quality of video for the opening sequence is excellent as the Barco DLP projectors have everything we need – 4K resolution, 3D mapping, excellent colour spectrum and colour mapping, low latency and a wide range of lensing “Theoptions.Barco projectors have many advantages for arena installations, from versatile rigging options with motorised pitch/roll/yaw adjustments to excellent warping and blending functionality.

WWW.MONDOSTADIA.COM 029 where the projectors display a race course on ice as contestants weave their way through on tricycles, to an “impossible shot” game where a fan is given the opportunity to win $500,000 by shooting the puck from one blue line into a small hole in the goal on the other side, and for a fans’ favourite game, Bingo, where the projectors are used to divided the ice into four sections as bingo cards. “The fans get really excited as the cards fill up on the ice and the winning card lights up on the ice,” explained Lamont.

For the future, the Kraken is investigating utilising the projectors for more events. After an extensive evaluation period as well as from valuable input from Ayron Sequira, Sr. Director Entertainment Experience, the Barco projectors were selected for the Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena on-ice projection show.

Jonny Greco added: “We were aspirational on many elements of our show and trying to come out with the show we envisioned was important. We wanted these projectors to look great, help carry the narrative and tie together with the abundant technology we had in our building in a unified signal flow to create something memorable.

“Once we had projection installed and available to us for the show, it created an impactful additive element. When we had all systems go with our tentacle and wall and ice projection connected to our full light kit with our incredible sound, we had a really powerful, immersive Seattle sports fan Jonnyexperience.”concluded it would be hard not to go with Barco next time a big project shapes up on the horizon: “When you have a successful dance, you want to keep dancing with the people who got you there the first time. Barco delivered after setting realistic expectations, and when we had questions or concerns, always made themselves available as partners to help us all find success.”

“We thought that the Mezzo would be well-suited to being installed behind the televisions in each of the suites,” explained David. “We used them to provide an audio input for local TV audio, amplification for local speakers, and IP audio connection to the bowl audio feeds. Idibri was brought in to provide high-quality audio in the arena’s suites to support bowl audio extension, background music and local television audio. David Battershell, Senior Consultant at idibri, a Salas O’Brien Company - and his team decided that Powersoft’s Mezzo compact amplifier platform would be an ideal fit for such a demanding application. David was the AV design consultant for the arena’s new construction, with Idibri acting as the AV component of a larger Populous design machine.

The bowl audio feeds for the Seattle venue were designed to come from a single FOH console via Dante and stream to the Mezzo infrastructure, comprising 58 units. Local audio from TVs themselves were connected directly via the analogue inputs on the Mezzo units, while Bluetooth audio inputs (AtteroTech unD6IO-BT) were able to steam to Mezzo via DavidDante.selected JBL speakers and a BSS London DSP system to complete the audio architecture at the arena. “Mezzo was something we have wanted for several years,” said David. “Powersoft heard our design requirements and delivered exactly what we needed.”

Andrew Gumper, the firm’s President, serves as the company’s Chief Project Manager - overseeing the designers, engineers, and installers involved in company projects. He discussed the OTE project and his reasons for selecting DAS Audio.

“Overtime Elite is a completely new approach to developing the next generation of professional basketball players,” Andrew explained. “It was important to management that in addition to being a cutting-edge sports facility, the venue be outfitted with the best possible audio reproduction equipment. This is because the announcements and other information that come across the loudspeakers must not only be suitable in terms of volume but must be clear and articulate to be clearly heard by players, officials, and audience alike.

To sum it all up— both in terms of the products and the supporting people— DAS Audio is hard to beat.”

When asked about the attributes that made the various DAS Audio loudspeakers the ideal choice for the OTE project, Andrew offered the following comments: “I’ve always loved the audio quality of DAS loudspeakers. They have a very natural, clear sound and their dispersion characteristics are excellent. Further, the company’s customer and technical support services are first-rate, and this is particularly important in terms of keeping a project on schedule.”

“The basketball court serves as OTE’s primary space,” added Andrew. “The arena holds 1,200 spectators and OTE hosts games that are open to the public.” Here, the AG Production Services team deployed 32 Aero-40A three-way powered line array systems, with each loudspeaker incorporating a 12-inch transducer in a bass-horn configuration for low-end reproduction, an eight-inch transducer for the midrange, with high frequency reproduction handled by two DAS M-75N neodymium compression drivers attached to a BPS-2912 waveguide. These are augmented by 16 Aero-20A compact line arrays—each equipped with a 12-inch transducer for the low-mid range, with one M-75N neodymium compression driver for the high frequencies. Low frequency support is provided by eight UX-218A subwoofers, each outfitted with dual 18-inch transducers in a front-loaded crossfire Inconfiguration.additionto the basketball court, the OTE facility also includes a weight room, practice courts, classrooms, and offices. Throughout these areas, the AG Production Services crew deployed various combinations of DAS Audio Artec, HQ, and CL series products. The company deployed 12 Artec-326-point source enclosures, each containing twin 6-inch low frequency transducers mated with the M-26 compression driver for the high frequencies. There were also nine HQ-212.64-CX two-way, long throw enclosures, with each box housing two horn loaded 12-inch low frequency transducers with an M-78N neodymium compression driver for the high frequencies. Further, the team installed 96 CL-8 ceiling speakers—each loaded with an eight-inch coaxial transducer—around the facility.

This led us to deploying DAS Audio.”

“The new DAS sound system has been absolutely amazing,” he said. “Our client is thrilled by its performance and capabilities. Levels are consistent throughout the entire basketball court, so there is never any question about what was announced—no matter where one happens to be seated.

The installation of the DAS Audio loudspeakers took place in September 2021 and the facility opened the next month in October. Since that time, Andrew reported the project has been an overwhelming success.

At the same time Stuart Graham was mindful that the venue had been designed not only as a multipurpose space, but with a modular auditorium, that would host a wide range of events—from theatre productions, comedy, conferences and exhibitions—some of them simultaneously. He envisaged it more than a place for different production companies to plug into, and worked closely alongside Neill Woodger to fulfil this. It had been Woodger who had first directed Graham to Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre in order to demo the VTX A8,

“There was a more ample budget available for the system’s design and implementation, and we wanted to focus on the scalability of the system and that it would work within every conceivable application. With that in mind, we opted for something tailored very much towards versatility and broader functionality.”

The latest of Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG’s) 58 operator run venues, it has been equipped with a versatile JBL VTX A8 line array, installed by Glantre Engineering following a competitive tender issued by main contractors, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

Consultant on the project was Neill Woodger Acoustics and Theatre Design. Glantre’s contract as system integrator was a turnkey, covering rigging, drapes, full AV (including IPTV) and lighting, as well as the audio component—not only in the main event rooms but also the meeting rooms.

“But I wanted to challenge it [with this installation], I just didn’t want to keep going down the same route. This was our first UK arena and I thought we should reach and test new products.

However, the recommendation for JBL’s compact line array had come from ATG’s Head of Technical Operations, Stuart Graham, who had been involved in the project from the outset four years ago. “We were able to have some influence on the design and I was able to shape the technical requirement.” He noted the transition to JBL after another premium system had

Stuart subsequently heard the system again on the touring version of Carole King’s Beautiful, before auditioning it thoroughly at the HQ of British and Ireland distributors, Sound Technology Ltd., in Hertfordshire. But he said it was hearing the system again on Beautiful—the Carole King Musical “that signed, sealed and delivered the deal.”

“I absolutely loved the sound of the A8 and B18 sub, and was blown away by the quality of the box. They had much more grunt and as for the usability of the system … it was easy to put up and take down.”

Neill Woodger was happy to sign-off on the JBL solution given the technical proposals supplied and his previous experience with JBL at Congress Theatre.

He had wanted to hear the system not only with Swansea in mind but also other venues requiring a comprehensive system. Stuart’s verdict on first hearing the system was unequivocal.

In total, 38 JBL VTX A8 have been rigged in their own flying frames at the Arena. The setup needed to be flexible as, thanks to a partition wall which closes the balcony, multiple events can be hosted simultaneously; for example, a banquet for 750 on the auditorium floor can be complemented by a seminar ongoing within the Circle, with no risk of interference or distraction. It was vital therefore that the sound system needed to be quicky reconfigurable and effective across the board.

The standard ‘full arena’ set-up is therefore two hangs each comprising 12 x A8 and 6 x B18 subs in cardioid configuration forming a conventional pros arch system. An additional 6 x B18 subs are available for ground-stacking as required. Two delay hangs each comprise of 5 x VTX A8 and 1 x VTX B18, plus four further VTX A8 as front fills, and a VTX M20 stage monitor package.

In addition, Glantre dipped further into the Harman portfolio, specifying AMX video switchers to manage conference events and video distribution for 4K capability projection, as well as touch screen control in other areas, including the VIP lounge.

“Sonically the system has completely blown me away. The overall quality is outstanding and a particularly surprising element for me was just how well this system performs with spoken word style performances. The clarity and precision of vocals through the system is by far one of the best I have ever used. The system alongside the venue itself seems to be a perfect combination.“

The room can then be configured into conference mode, when the front rake goes in and the box angles change and reduce to eight a side; extra enclosures are then added to the delay arrays which are lowered and angled up slightly when the acoustic partition drops to divide the hall.

Matt Watt, Head of Sound Technology’s Application Team worked with ATG and Glantre on the design proposal and acoustic modelling. “We modelled several alternative solutions before settling on the flexible A8 design.” commented Matt. “We were limited by the curtain as to where the speakers could be positioned, and the system still needed to work as delay for front of house and as the independent conference system. A8’s ease of rigging makes the reconfiguration of these areas possible as it’s so quick and easy!”

Keith Powles, Technical and Building Manager of Swansea Arena, also added favourable comment. “Now that the arena is fully operational, I have had many different opportunities to use the system in various setups and configurations within the “Thespace.first thing that was apparent when using the system was just how flexible and intuitive it was for the user to set up, in a broad range of different scenarios—everything from conference, comedy all the way to large scale music events.

Glantre set up and optimised the entire system using JBL LAC (Line Array Calculator) and Performance Manager software, with BSS and amp config, working closely with Matt and Danny at Sound Technology’s Applications team, who were responsible for final commissioning. Glantre’s Project Manager and Senior Engineer, Tim Davies, explained: “There are a number of operating modes, both standing and seating and set up various presets as a base, with three or four different “Essentiallyconfigurations.it’saconverged network and runs on the IT hardware, apart from the lighting.”

In conclusion, Stuart Graham has no doubts about the wisdom of his preference for the JBL rig, particularly noting the speed of speaker reconfiguration during fast moving event changeovers. “JBL has a rich history and I know this was the right time and place for us to make a shift over to the brand. Longer term, once the reputation of the system comes more into play, we want to be able to offer the system competitively to certain size productions who don’t need all the investment of bringing equipment in.”

The integration of relevant, real-time data and messaging, with content designs that updated as the day passed, was also something truly innovative. Being able to live stream in video feeds from brand ambassadors using Samsung mobile phones was a great feature of the solution.

Using the latest generation Dell hardware with Nvidia GPUs, the content utilised ray tracing and advanced 3D lighting effects, permitting subtle features such as dynamic shadowing for all text and assets based the position of the sun, creating a truly pop-out dynamic 3D effect. In conjunction with the dynamic asset playout, live media and 3D camera features, this ensured that there were no repetitive content loops, and that key messaging was weighted appropriately to deliver the right messaging at the right time. The content displayed was ingested, integrated and/or synchronised with all key departments and focus areas for the event, including racing, operations, public transport, partners and sponsors, marketing, health and safety, experiential, social media, security, and food and beverage.

The CanvasPro platform is highly flexible, which proved invaluable when key broadcast partner Sky Sports requested to broadcast its live output via the display just one day before the start of Royal Ascot, which was not initially planned for. Due to circumstances beyond everyone’s control, the final timelines for the project presented a huge challenge, with the entire end-to-end solution being designed, installed and fully operational within two months from getting the final go ahead, and with on-site build works completed within three weeks in collaboration with LED installer EDS and Ascot Racecourse.

The benefits of Kappture’s technology are clear, particularly the increased speed of transactions, which, in turn, meant an increased volume of sales and revenue. In early 2022, Kappture completed a full hardware upgrade of the entire Croke Park site, installing the K1 devices across the stadium. The K1 devices are energy efficient and offer a customer-facing second screen with integrated RFID & magstripe reader. On the back of the hardware upgrade, Kappture also created a new integration to the clover device that is used by Allied Irish Bank Merchant Services. To further enrich the guest experience at the stadium, the team at Croke Park, working with Aramark and Kappture, put in place another project, with the focus being to increase the speed of concession payments, utilising the Kappture POS (Point of Sale) system across 396 terminals across the site, whilst building in a streamlined and smart cash and stock management system. Back in 2018, this work was carried out by a team of just three engineers over five days.

Fan Controlled Football (FCF) is a professional indoor American football league that began in 2021 and is the only professional football league where fans call the shots, including real-time play calling, team branding, and personnel decisions. Pullman Yards, a historic industrial complex where the Pullman Company once repaired railroad sleeper cars, is now a landmark site and the filming location of many movies and television series. Under redevelopment as an entertainment destination, ahead of the 2022 season the FCF league began construction on a purpose-built 1,500seat arena at the site complete with entertainment stage.

“We had used the Proteus Maximus in other applications and knew it had great light output,” added Todd. “Also, although the structure does have a canvas roof, because it’s built on an old rail bed, it’s not a clean environment but is dusty and dirty. We were pretty positive we wouldn’t test a fixture’s IP rating because of water but we knew we needed a closed Thefixture.”first task was to get the appropriate light levels for the games. According to Todd, the structure dictated the rigging positions, and there wasn’t a lot of flexibility. MAGNUM engaged Bob Mentele, Specification Sales Engineer at Elation, to help run foot-candle calculations and get the proper light levels. “We used the foot candles that the sports lights were achieving the previous year as our reference and laid that out to make sure we could achieve those light levels and with Bob’s help we did,” Todd said. “Light level on the field is around 130 ft candles.” The Maximus are mounted on rows of 200-ft truss on each side of the arena with 48 fixtures on each side plus 16 in each end zone. Lighting design on the project was a collaboration between Tom Marzullo, Todd Finch and Taylor Chandler. Additional to the rig are eight Elation Cuepix 16 IP LED matrix panels in the offensive end zone that are used mostly during the scoring ballyhoo look. Other lights populate the rig as well. “All of the lights are double purposed with the Maximus doing the heavy lifting regarding artistic gobo, color and FX as well as the broadcast level of lumens,” Finch stated. Although the vast majority watch FCF games online, 1,500 fans can watch live at the venue. pened in 2021, Jeddah Corniche Circuit is regarded as the “fastest street circuit” in Formula One, and ushered in a new era of F1 racing when it hosted the inaugural Saudi Arabia Grand Prix in December of that year.

Beyond the track’s impressive speeds, the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation wanted the new 6.17 km (3.84 mi) circuit to provide a one-of-a-kind racing and entertainment experience for racers and spectators. An integral part of achieving that goal was the installation of a highly-customised LED lighting system to provide for night racing.

Upon researching LED sports lighting manufacturers, the Federation found that Musco’s technology, reputation in the industry, and experience lighting other world-class F1 courses—including Yas Marina Circuit, Bahrain International Circuit, and Losail International Circuit— made the company the ideal partner for Jeddah Corniche.

A key challenge with the lighting project, however, was timing. Musco had just eight months to design and install the custom Total Light Control—TLC for LED™ system in order to be ready for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, which was to be run under the lights. With more than 2,200 TLC for LED fixtures and 627 poles spanning the 27-turn circuit—covering the equivalent of 25 full-size football

Running multiple daily shifts and adapting to frequent schedule changes brought about from upwards of 50 different vendors coordinating their work on the project, Musco worked closely with the project’s general contractor UNIMAC, circuit designer Tilke Engineers & Architects, and others to complete the installation on time. The top priority for the system is to create the safest possible setting for drivers—who reach speeds in excess of 250 km/ hour (160 mi/hour)—by distributing clean, uniform light evenly across the circuit. With patented light control and luminaire visoring technology, Musco’s LED system achieves FIA floodlighting guidelines, while avoiding the creation of glare which would be dangerous for drivers at such high speeds.

“This was a massive project that had to be completed in time for the Federation to stage an F1 event for a global audience,” said Jeff Rogers, President of Musco. “We knew the stakes were very high. But our team came together from different parts of the world and had great collaboration with everyone else involved to get it done.”

With the new system in place—Jeddah Corniche is the world’s longest F1 circuit to feature LED lighting.
