Local breakfast presenter with SNOW FM, Claire Humphery, has recently won an Alumni Award for merging Talent. Claire was announced a winner at presentation at Sydney TAFE on August 5. Claire holds a Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Radio Broadcasting). Claire first enrolled at Sydney TAFE at Petersham West Street, completing the Certificate Ill Media (Radio Broadcasting) in 2012, and went on to complete the Certificate IV Screen and Media (Radio Broadcasting) in 2013. After she completed her studies at Sydney TAFE, she was accepted into the prestigious Graduate Diploma Radio at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, a post graduate course with a highly competitive entry. After completing this course in 2014, she was immediately offered work at Snow FM and was the first of her contemporaries to be employed. Alumni Awards will recognise Sydney TAFE’s most outstanding graduates whose qualities of innovation, leadership and compassion have made a difference.

The Jindabyne and Berridale skate parks have just received a facelift thanks to an initiative by the Snowy Monaro Regional Council and local artist Mike Shankster. The project is part of an anti-graffiti initiative which aims to minimize tagging and vandalism by applying contemporary artwork to problem areas. Mike was approached by the Snowy Monaro Regional Council to present some concepts and potential solutions for the skate parks. Mike was eager to take on the project with the intention of minimising vandalism to the parks and improving the aesthetics of the areas. “Having a huge passion for illustration and large scale murals I welcomed a project like this and also an excuse to get out of the office. My background is in graphic arts,” he said.

“It was a honour to paint in both parks having grown up here, we live in a great community so I’m stoked to contribute to it in the best way I can.” Mike believes that a well executed piece of artwork is generally respected by taggers, in turn minimising vandalism. He also said the artworks lift the aesthetics of the parks and, giving them a modern and contemprorary theme and the region could benefit from more community based art projects. The artworks provide a unique depiction of the Snowy Mountains region and have been carried out with a high level of expertise. “The Jindabyne and Berridale pieces represent both the beauty and harsh contrasts of our regional area and wildlife in a contemporary street art manner. “The community response and feedback has been positive and I’m looking forward to the next project,” Mike said.

Canberra Airport goes international ‘direct’ September marks an exciting start to a new chapter in tourism for the region, with the commencement of flights to and from Singapore and Wellington (NZ) into Canberra, by Singapore Airlines. The new ‘Capital Express’ route will provide the nation’s capital with two direct international destination options with flight SQ292/291 operating Canberra-Singapore and Canberra-Wellington. For the first time in the two countries’ histories, Australia and New Zealand’s capital cities will be serviced by non-stop flights four times a week. “This new service linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington reflects the close ties between the three countries,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong.

“We are excited about the prospects for our new ‘Capital Express’ route, which we are confident will appeal to leisure, government and corporate travellers. We are especially pleased to be bringing more convenient travel options to customers with Canberra’s first regularly scheduled international flights and the first non-stop links between the capitals of Australia and New Zealand.” Since it was purchased in 1998 the Capital Airport Group has invested more than $2 billion in facilities at Canberra Airport, investments that will have helped it make history on September 21 when it welcomes the first Singapore Airlines flight. Canberra Airport Chairman, Mr Terry Snow AM, said the decision by Singapore Airlines to begin operations was justification of the long-term vision that Canberra Airport has

had for many years. “From day one, my family set about creating a world-class gateway for the national capital. As longterm locals committed to the prosperity of the capital region, our campaign to see Canberra become linked directly to the rest of the world has been constant,” said Mr Snow. Canberra Airport offers frequent and direct services to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast and Newcastle, and an upgraded runway is able to accommodate larger jets including the Boeing 747 and Boeing 777, as well as the Airbus A380. Canberra Airport enjoys a unique position as the only 747-capable, curfewfree airport between Brisbane and Melbourne.

If the weather is ok, you can rug up and go for a stroll around the lake. There’s nothing better than having a walk and a chinwag with your girlfriends... except maybe having a beer and a chinwag. Head to the Banjo Patterson Inn where you can get $4 schooners between 12pm and 1pm everyday.

WILD BRUMBY GIN DEBUTS WITH A Gold When Brad and Monika Spalding launched their wild brumby Gin in November last year they didn’t imagine it would collect a gold at its first ever show but that is exactly what happened. Brad sent a bottle off for judging at the highly regarded Melbourne International Spirit Competition and the result was gold in the highly competitive gin category. The awards are held in Melbourne, Berlin and New York annually and the blind judging is conducted by industry experts (buyer, sommelier, restaurant beverage director, hotelier, distributor and importer) with a focus firmly on the consumer. The competition, now in its third year, is open to all commercially produced spirits from around the world and entries are invited from brands currently being sold in Australia. ‘We’ve spent years perfecting this gin, it has been a long term commitment and it has been very carefully curated’, says Brad. Beautiful Australian native and local botanicals add subtle flavours to the product and a highlight is the citrus with origins from Brad’s family farm in the Albury region.

‘We were so delighted to get the flavour balance right and to finally get this in a bottle and out to customers late last year. ‘Customer are loving it and the feedback has been amazing - we’ve had to increase production to keep up with the demand – we’re making small batches every week now’, says Brad. National Busking TITLES

Following four years of successful Regional Busking Championships in Cooma and a first interstate event in Stanthorpe, Queensland, an Australian National Final is assured for 2017. On July 29, the formation meeting was held of the Australian National Busking Championships Association, which is in the process of registering as an incorporated body comprising eight members at this stage, headed by president Allan Spencer of the Cooma School of Music. The association has a total of four regional competitions committed and an additional six in the course of finalisation, which will result in a total of three from NSW, two each from Queensland and Victoria and one each from Tasmania and Western Australia. All competitions are organised with the respective Rotary Clubs in each regional town. It is anticipated that the first national title will be held in November 2017 with a possible 16 regional and interstate participants each providing three competitors. This will become a major Australian festival for Cooma, attracting many visitors to the Cooma-Monaro Region.

Faces OF THREDBO 2016

Geoffrey Hughes, Thyne Reid and George Freuden were chosen for their contribution to Australian skiing and the Thredbo ski resort to be the Faces of Thredbo for 2016 by the Thredbo Historical Society.

GEOFFREY FORREST HUGHES GEOFFREY FORREST HUGHES, a Sydney lawyer and an enthusiastic skier of considerable ability, was a member of the original Kosciusko Thredbo syndicate, which included Tony Sponar, Charles Anton and Thyne Reid. Geoffrey played a substantial role in the establishment of the village and the ski slopes – urging his fellow syndicate members to move quickly to establish their claim, working on the legal underpinnings and the negotiations with the Kosciusko State Park (KSP) Trust); attracting Thyne Reid to invest and take over the chairmanship of the syndicate; and being the driving force behind the first uphill transport, namely a rope tow, on the southern flank of the Ramshead Range. All of this before the age of 30. His brother, Tom Hughes QC, accepted the Award Certificate on behalf of him as he was unable to travel to Thredbo. Tom commented that Geoffrey was caste in the role as a peace maker between syndicate members and kept it from falling apart.

ANDREW THYNE REID

Philanthropist ANDREW THYNE REID, a mechanical engineer, an adventurer, a pilot and sports enthusiast, contributed to the development of the resort as the first chairman of Kosciusko Thredbo and saving it from commercial oblivion on two occasions. The first occasion was in 1957 when his money constituted most of what the infant Kosciusko Thredbo could call upon to develop the resort. It was the funds which paid largely for the access road from the Alpine Way, the original chairlift to Kareela, the first hotel and the early infrastructure of the village. The second time came when Thyne’s personal wealth could not help the original company meet its obligations complete the hotel and the resort infrastructure as required by the KSP Trust, he found a company, namely Lend Lease, to continue the development of Thredbo to become an international resort. Thyne died in 1964. In the acceptance speech by Thyne’s great grand nephew George Reid, Thyne was described as a man of humility who shunned publicity and relished the finer things in life.

GEORGE FREUDEN OAM The third Face of Thredbo this year was GEORGE FREUDEN OAM, who was recognised for his tireless service to ski safety and volunteering. Following the horrors of the Nazi invasion of Hungary in 1944 and then intolerable life under the communist regime at the end of World War II, George escaped to live in Australia using the fundamental survival techniques to get through, and which carried him throughout his life. Nobody could have imagined the impact George was to make on Australian ski patrolling when he joined the patrol in 1967. He with John Barclay, John Rumble and Adrian Studley late in 1969, initiated a meeting in Goulburn with representatives from Smiggin’s Patrol, to establish the NSW Ski Patrol Association. The inaugural meeting saw George Freuden elected as Secretary, and John Rumble as President. From 1971 as Secretary of Thredbo Ski Patrol Association, George was responsible for the rapid development of many ideas, which the patrol still uses to this day. George was a founding member of the Australian Ski Patrol Association and became its first President in 1972, a position he held until 1984. He co-founded the International Ski Patrol Federation; and he served on the legal and safety committee for the International Ski Federation. The international patrol exchange schemes with Val d’Isere in France and Canada were set up by him. His work was formally recognised through the presentation of Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and in 1992 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal. George died in 2015. George’s widow, Hilary Freuden in her acceptance speech of his Award Certificate, described him as a man who did things without thinking and he didn’t tread lightly, he left a very large footprint on a global scale as a Face of Thredbo.

People chosen to be Faces of Thredbo in previous years included Michael Milton, Barry May, Sasha Nekvapil, Leonhard Erharter, Frank Prihoda, Cees Koeman, Tommy Tomasi, Tony Sponar and Charles Anton.

Travel conditions will be improved for motorists on the main road corridor to the NSW snowfields through a number of major projects being planned on the Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road. The Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the NSW Government had allocated $20 million for the improvements which would start from next year. “This is great news for the local community and for motorists travelling to the NSW snow fields every year,” Mr Barilaro said. “Planning is already under way for the first priority project, an additional westbound lane in Jindabyne, on Kosciuszko Road from Barry Way to Alpine Way. “Work on this lane is expected to start in 2017. “Anyone who travels to Thredbo or Perisher during the snow season will welcome the additional lane as they would be well aware of the congestion

which can occur on this stretch of road. “Investigation work is also under way to identify appropriate locations to provide new overtaking lanes between the NSW and ACT border and Jindabyne to improve journey times for motorists.” Mr Barilaro said the results of the investigations will determine the best locations for extra overtaking lanes. “The geographic constraints and costs at each site will determine how many can be built with the $20 million investment,” Mr Barilaro said. “This will be welcome news for people who travel through Jindabyne to Thredbo and Perisher Valley during winter.” A Review of Environmental Factors will be prepared for the project and Roads and Maritime will keep the community informed as planning progresses. Snow cover in the months of August and September are much higher than July and October. Retired civil engineer, Brian Gunter, has analysed data collected by Snowy Hydro over the past 60 years. Looking at measurements from the last 20 years of snow depths near Spencers Creek in the Snowy Mountains, Brian has found that during August and September snow depths have been consistently over 100cm. Brian has also found that we have seen a slight decrease in snowfall over recent years. Since 1970, there has been a trend of shorter durations of high snow cover (50cm – 100cm). Brian says over the last 40 years, the

duration of 50cm snow cover has decreased by 18 per cent, and for 100cm cover it has declined by eight per cent. Since the 1950s, peak snow depth trends have also fallen by 20 per cent, from 210cm to 170cm. Since 1992, there has been no peak fall exceeding 300cm, whereas between 1956 and 1992, there were five years where 300cm fell. Daffodil Fete The Daffodil Fete is an annual event and is to be held on Saturday September 17 this year. The Fete is organised by the Berridale Anglican Women of the Anglican Parish of Berridale and the Snowy Mountains and will open at 10am in the Community Hall in Berridale (entrance via Dalgety Road and Florence Street). The Daffodil Fete commenced in 1942 when the late Canon Done and his wife introduced it to Berridale Anglicans when he took charge of the parish. Canon Done and his wife came from Cootamundra parish where the Daffodil Fete was a popular event. The first Fete was held in the GUOOF (Grand United Order of Odd Fellows) Hall in Berridale in September 1942 with daffodils brought in from Cootamundra. The Fete continued to be held in the GUOOF Hall until the hall was closed. The Fete then was moved to the CWA hall. While smaller than the GUOOF hall this limitation was overcome by erecting tents in the CWA grounds. The last move of the Daffodil Fete was to the Berridale Community Centre where it will continue for the foreseeable future. Many of the traditions of the early Fetes are still in place but over the years many other stalls have been added to the Fete format. Cakes, prepared meals, jams, pickles, honey, books, just to name a few. Of course there is always the popular White Elephant stall. In addition outside vendors have also been admitted to the Fete to increase stall variety.

Many of the families that attend each year enjoy sitting down to enjoy the wonderful morning teas that are served in the small hall and present a great opportunity to catch up with friends. For lunch the barbecue is popular. A star attraction at midday is a performance of the students of the Rosie O’Sullivan Dance Studio. As a Grand Finale we will announce the winner of the trailer of wood - still plenty of wood needed! All proceeds are shared between local and international charities. Drug Driving Roadside drug testing will now become a regular occurrence in the Monaro and Snowy Mountain region. The Monaro Local Area Command (LAC) has recently obtained the facilities to be able to conduct the saliva drug test on a regular basis. Previously a truck with the drug testing equipment was brought up to service the local area every now and then, but with the new

equipment now available to the Monaro LAC, it will become as regular as RBTs. If caught driving with a prohibited drug in your system, you will be fined up to $2,200 and could have your licence suspended for at least three months. Do the right thing and don’t do drugs or drink and drive. It’s not just your life you are risking.

Every road trip needs some good tunes. When you’re picking up your snow gear from Rhythm, grab a copy of the brand new Rhythm Records compilation CD. Five great tracks from very talented local artists, the CD is the first release of new local recording label, Rhythm Records. Founder Gunther Gorman says he wanted to give local musicians an opportunity. “There are so many great artists in the area and it is very difficult to create an album on your own,” he says, “I wanted to provide them with a garden to grow in, so that they can share their potential with a wider audience.” Gunther approached Mick and Karen Klima at Rhythm Snowsports with the idea and they jumped on board without hesitating. “Rhythm has been born out of a long history of mixing together a love of the mountains with the love of music,” they said, “Rhythm Snowsports called itself Rhythm for one reason only; music is an ever-present, driving force in our lives.” With the focus of the label being quality music, the CD brings together tracks from local artists Jack Biilmann, Cielle Montgomery, Roger McCulloch and The Barstars. Jack grew up at Pambula Beach and is now based out of Canberra, but has spent a lot of time in the Snowy Mountains. Appearing on Triple J’s Unearthed,

Jack is a talented songwriter, guitarist and vocalist. His piece Keya’s Song (Please Don’t Go) is the first track on the Rhythm Records CD. To catch Jack live, head to The Eiger in Perisher Valley on August 25 and 26. Cielle Montgomery is an ex-paramedic who comes from a music loving family in Dry Plains near Cooma. Cielle’s song on the CD is Long Gone and has an alternative country style by this beautiful singer and skilled guitarist. Roger McCulloch is from Cooma and has been playing guitar since he was 14 years old. He is the front man of The Barstars, a local band of Cooma guys that love to play music in the style of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Roger has his own track, Bought My Ticket, on the CD as well as a tune by The Barstars called Boogie Woogie. Gunther himself is also part of The Barstars as a guitarist and also has a track of his own on the CD, appropriately called Infectious Rhythm. Having been involved in the music industry for many years, Gunther has worked with big names in the biz including Daddy Cool, Sherbet and Frankie J Holden. The Thredbo Historical Society’s (THS) Mid Winter Dinner on Wednesday, July 20th in the Kosciusko Room of the Alpine Hotel is always a relaxed evening when people gather to share memories of the past and look to the future of snow sports and Thredbo, where Thredbo’s Operations Manager Stuart Diver envisages greater social interaction with the environment, and an expansion of uphill transport in the direction of Saturday Peak. During the evening Stuart announced the individuals chosen to be the three Faces of Thredbo for 2016, namely Geoffrey Hughes, Thyne Reid and George Freuden. Amongst the 79 guests were past Winter Olympians Frank Prihoda and Christine Davy who together were on the Australian team at the 1956 Winter Games at Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. Christine again competed at the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics in 1960. She was Australia’s first female alpine Winter Olympian. After retiring from skiing, Christine

became a pioneering female airline pilot. She was the first Australian woman to hold a 1st Class Air Transport Pilot’s Licence. In 1963, she received the Nancy Bird Trophy for her service to aviation from the Australian Women Pilots’ Association. In 1974, Christine became the first woman in Australia to be employed as a pilot of a passenger airline, Connair, which was based in Alice Springs NT. In 1970, Christine became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her service to civil aviation. This year the Society celebrates the 21st Anniversary of its foundation and achievements as it continues to work towards its involvement the establishment exploitation of a national snow sports museum in Thredbo and to collect, preserve and maintain its collection, and make it available to the public so as to encourage community learning, education and awareness of historical values as these relate to Australian

skiing and the locality of Thredbo. To mark the occasion 16 of the guests at the Mid Winter Dinner, were presented with a Certificate in recognition of their 15 or 20 years continuous membership of the organisation. Currently the Society has a financial membership of 225 individuals and 12 ski clubs. One major achievement of THS is the voluntarily operated Thredbo Ski Museum located in the village centre, where a representative selection of its 3,000 object collection of memorabilia, is on display between 1 and 5 pm daily (except Mondays) during July, August and summer school holidays, and at weekends in June and September. The Museum attracts over 4,000 visitors a year. Neville (Nev) Gare, who died aged 86 in May, was the first ever superintendent of Kosciusko State Park. The nownamed Kosciuszko National park, at 673,542 hectares, is one of Australia’s largest and greatest national parks. Its magnificent mountain scenery, glacial lakes, summer wild flowers, crystal clear mountain streams and winter snowfields are much loved and, as part of the Australian Alps national parks and reserves, the park has achieved the pinnacle conservation status of our country as an Australian government listed National Heritage Place. It is a conservation legacy for all Australians that Gare contributed to significantly. It could have been very different. Many people sought to exploit and modify these lands. In the history of our country, the establishment, protection, and wise management of Kosciusko State Park since 1944 is a story of courage, vision and perseverance by many remarkable Australians, including Sir William McKell, Myles Dunphy, Sam Clayton, Alec Costin, Baldur Byles and their many supporters. Gare was also one of these great conservation leaders and he established and transformed the conservation management of Kosciusko State Park. Gare was a forester. After the early death of his father, he had worked as a young child on his mother’s farm, and later as a teenager he worked on his stepfather’s farm at Galston, NSW, before being awarded a forestry cadetship to study at Sydney University. He finished his training by completing his diploma of forestry at the Australian National University in 1950. Gare’s NSW forestry work was based at Bermagui, the Styx River and Bondi State Forest until 1959, when he applied for the Kosciusko State Park superintendent’s position. In correspondence between Gare and park trustee Baldur Byles, Byles stated that “he would have to perform the labours of Hercules� in the position of superindendent. He also supplied Gare with “a list of 50 tricky tasks awaiting his attention�. This was like a red rag to a bull and in a 1996 interview with the National Library of Australia, Gare talked about his decision to take on this tough job.

“I thought of how I’d jumped when the chance came in 1958 to resign from my safe job in the forestry commission and the public service to take up that job at Kosiusko. To show that a professional forester could manage the country’s biggest national park and main snow-fed catchment for outdoor recreation, catchment protection and wildlife conservation.� Gare was a pioneer. He was one of the first professional protected area managers for Australia and though his forestery traiing and practical field experience equipped him to undertake the role, little other protected area guidance was immediately available. A lot of his work was based on intuition but he also turned to the US National Park Service as one of the few sources of information and guidance. Esttablished in 1916, the USNPS had long experience in national park master planning concepts and other matters. Gare applied its principles and slowly achieved order from an otherwise chaotic demand for use of the park. Gare also wanted to ensure that the people of Australia and other visitors could share and enjoy Kosciusko State Park, its natural beauty and its environments. His park planning followed this approach. He foreshadowed a basic vehicle access system in the park; a system of walking tracks; he provided planning for the ski resorts; and he planned an intense public relations effort to interest people in visiting Kosciusko. The development of an information centre at the park entrance and visitor facilities such as picnic grounds, fire places and shelter sheds followed this planning. Today we take these facilities for granted. His park planning also recognised large zones where natural areas were to be kept intact. All of this work took place when his employer, the Kosciusko State Park Trust, had little money; there were few staff; skiing was “taking off� as a new tourism industy; there was a proposal for a gondolier up the western face of Kosciuszko; there was an intense debate over the future of grazing in the park and there was illegal grazing. In addition, there was a politically charged showdown between scientists, conservationists and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority about proposals to build hydro-electric scheme aqueducts in the summit area. Gare died suddenly on May 7 after a short illness. He loved his family dearly, and was deeply appreciative of their enduring support. He grieved the loss of his oldest son Johnno, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Joan and children Suzee, Lindy, Pete and grandchildren Jack, Cinta and Tim.

BELOKA water CRACKS CHINESE EXPORT MARKET

Local beverage producer Beloka Water is the latest company to crack the export market into China where the insatiable demand for high quality food and beverages is driving economic growth in regional NSW. The deal is expected to generate $25 million in the first three years, with local job opportunities opening up for the region. Beloka Water is a pristine, mineral rich water bottled at the source, outside of Dalgety at the foot of the Snowy Mountains. CEO and founder Joe Commisso was planting an olive grove when he discovered the large under water aquifer under the ground at Beloka. After further investigation, he realised the high quality of the water and put his retirement on hold. Stocked in many restaurants and cafes across Australia, this the first time Beloka Water is hitting international shores and Mr. Commisso and his team could not be more excited. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said Beloka Water is a prime example of the ‘clean, green and safe’ export product so highly sought after in Asia and a great example of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement working. “Beloka Water is a top shelf, 100 per cent Australian made product with a solid domestic reputation set to take off in one of the fastest growing markets in the world,� Mr. Ayres said, “With demand for food and beverage products from within NSW set to boom internationally and increase by up to 70 percent by 2055, it’s businesses like Beloka the NSW Government is assisting to get onto the international stage.� Australia’s $544 million bottled water industry is dominated by industry giants and European

imported waters however Beloka Water is on its way to targeting 10 to 15 percent of the bottled water market. Beloka Owner Joe Commisso credits work by the NSW Trade Commissioner Cher Jones for assisting the export process through market insights, facilitated visits to Dongguan and Guangzhou, and introductions to Chinese importers. “Our success finally came after displaying at the Guangzhou ‘international water tasting competition’ where we gained the attention of suppliers, something we’ve been attempting for three years,� Mr. Commisso said. “Beloka Water is 100% Australian - everything from the caps, labels, and boxes are sourced from within Australia, and it is bottled using recycled glass, meaning the water is also developed in a sustainable manner. The idea was born, and Tuscany in Dalgety was created. This can be an issue, if they happen to be crossing a road at the same time someone is driving along it. LAOKO (Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans) is a wildlife rescue group based in the Snowy Mountains. This group of trained volunteer carers assist in the rescue and care of native wildlife in the local area. Each year hundreds of native animals are injured or killed as a result of car accidents, dog attacks and human intervention in the form of unauthorised culling. Many young animals as a result are left orphaned and the organisation assists in the raising of these orphans and rehabilitating for release back into the wild. If you find an injured animal in our area, please contact us as soon as possible on (02) 6456 1313.

Make sure the road is clear of traffic, if you can’t do this, please call our Emergency Rescue line, local Police or National Parks & Wildlife for assistance. • Ensure the animal is not at risk of attack from domestic animals such as dogs or cats, by locking them up until a rescuer arrives and takes the animal. • You can minimise stress to the animal by placing a towel or blanket over it, then place in a box (if it is a small animal or bird). Kangaroos, wombats, etc, should calm down if the towel or blanket is placed over their head. Try not to disturb the animal and wait till a rescuer arrives.

• As soon as possible, contact LAOKO’s Emergency Rescue line, your local Police or National Parks & Wildlife. You will be advised what action to take. DON’T • Try to feed the animal until you have spoken with someone who is qualified in native animal rescue. Marsupials are intolerant to cows milk. Water is better than trying to feed cow’s milk. • Remove an animal from a pouch or take it away from its mother because you think the kids would love to hand raise it. Too many animals have died slow and miserable deaths due to parents thinking it would be good to teach their kids the responsibility. Native animals aren’t like kittens and puppies and need specialised care.

Don’t forget that it is illegal to keep native wildlife without a licence, they must be passed on to a licensed carer or Wildlife Rescue Organisation. As cute and cuddly as the animal may appear, it’s unfair to give them nothing but the best possible chance of survival.

JOSH TO WEAR THE GREEN AND GOLD Cooma swimmer Josh Alford has been selected to wear the green and gold at the 2016 Paralympic games to be held in Rio. The 21 year old is no stranger to representing his country making his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow at just 18. He made it to the final of the 200m freestyle for S14 swimmers and finished in sixth place. S14 is a classification used for categorising swimmers with an intellectual disability. Josh has also represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he achieved a personal best in six different races and finished sixth place in the 200m freestyle. REIGNING CHAMPION Chris Froome TO RIDE IN NSW AT L’ÉTAPE AUSTRALIA British Tour de France reigning champion Chris Froome will be riding in L’Étape Australia by le Tour de France in the NSW Snowy Mountains on 3 December 2016. Chris Froome, OBE has been appointed L’Étape Australia’s Pro Mentor; he will mentor the amateur racers and riders, providing tips on training for the event, racing tactics, riding safely in packs, breakaways and the physical and mental attributes required to continually improve. Froome will be holding a series of clinics and rides before L’Étape Australia gets underway on December 3, then he will ride from the back of the pack through to the front along the 157km mountainous route.

Former ski pro and Skeena Heli Ski co-owner, David Freuden, has launched the Snowcomparison.com website this week for skiers and boarders looking to get the most from their resort of choice. Snowcomparison.com allows skiers and boarders to search for a resort that suits them based on terrain, vertical drop and accommodation prices.
