Trekking the trail Summer or autumn, in the Thredbo and Perisher area there are a wide variety of mountain bike trails and walking tracks to choose from. Take a short one hour ride or challenge yourself to that trek of a lifetime. Explore Australia’s highest mountain Kosciuszko, experience the pioneering heritage of the NSW High Country with a visit to one of our historic huts, take a dip in a cool mountain stream and discover the wonders of the NSW Snowy Mountains. For those with mobility issues you can hire free of charge our TrailRider from the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne. Just call ahead to book. The TrailRider offers new opportunities for people with mobility restrictions to experience our parks for themselves, and with their family and their friends. It has handles at the front and back, which allow guides to manoeuvre the chair on walking tracks that are not wheelchair-accessible, including up and down stairs. The use of a TrailRider requires a minimum of two guides. The Thredbo Valley Track is an iconic summer mountain bike trail and year round walk which is one of the Snowy Mountains most popular and easiest adventures on two

5

wheels. It’s a moderate three hour ride or an eight hour walk between Thredbo Alpine Village and Bullocks Flat Skitube Terminal. If you prefer to tackle just a section of the track, there are access points at Ngarigo or Thredbo Diggings campgrounds, and at Bullocks Flat. The track starts from Friday Drive, in Thredbo, and meanders along the pretty Thredbo River valley, crossing five suspension bridges on the way to Ngarigo campground. Soak in the views of the Ramshead Range as you ride by the banks of the Thredbo River, through tall mountain gum forest, snow gum woodland, and open grasslands. The track is mostly smooth for easy riding or walking with some short climbs and descents, making it a great family, small group of individual adventure, suitable for most ages. Arrange a car pool, or take advantage of several shuttle services and tours in summer, to return to Thredbo. Lower Thredbo Valley track extension: The Thredbo Valley track is being extended downstream from Bullocks Flat to link with trails around Lake Jindabyne. The new sections of the track will progressively be opened as construction works are completed.

Time to get on your bike, put on your hiking boots to explore and discovery the beauty of Kosciuszko National Park and its stunning Alpine Environments. For more information contact one of our visitor centres at Jindabyne 02 64505600, Tumut 02 69477025 or Khancoban on 02 check number.

Lake Light Sculpture is an inspiring outdoor sculpture exhibition and competition which will be held along the stunning foreshore of Lake Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains of NSW from the 30th March to 2nd April 2018. The Easter long weekend offers a fantastic opportunity to experience Jindabyne. The sculptures are displayed in an evocative setting with the reflections of the Snowy Mountains on the lake, providing a living studio for the artworks but it is as night falls that the real magic begins. Illumination has, since the festival’s inception, been a defining element of Lake Light Sculpture, and the sculptures are lit from sunset to 10pm each evening. Artists embed lighting, reflection and optical

tricks into their sculptures to play on the light of Easter’s full moon. The effect is dramatic, transforming the already interesting sculptures and revealing hidden elements. It’s an ideal time to bundle up against the autumn chill and walk hand-in-hand with the ones you love along the foreshore. Artists of every calibre – including professionals, experienced and emerging artists, community groups, and local tradesmen – participate in the event. Previous years’ prizes have included a sculpture residency at the Australian National University, the coveted People’s Choice Award, and the Illumination Award for the sculpture that best lights up the starstrewn night.

Easter Art Show and Sale Opening Night and Exhibition

This year’s Lions Easter Art Show and Sale held at the Jindabyne Memorial Hall is attracting a lot of attention and organisers are expecting over 300 entries from over 90 local and interstate artists. The show starts with the Mitre 10 Jindabyne Opening Night at 7pm on Thursday 29 March, a wonderful way to start the Easter break. Tickets are available at the door and with delicious finger food supplied by CWA this is always a popular event. The hard-working Lions will be on hand to make sure the wine is flowing, and the night runs smoothly. Admission to the Opening Night is $15 which covers the light supper, beverages and of course the first chance to snare that artwork that you have always wanted. Long-time Lions member and Art Show committee head, Terry Chalk says that once again, the quality and variety of the artworks is amazing. “We have a wonderful mix of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and craft. There is something for everyone, whether it is a grand statement for your ski lodge or a feature for your living room, this is the place to pick up an absolute bargain. All of the artwork is priced at below $1,500, with some as low as $50 and a tremendous selection of very high-quality items in the $200 to $400 price range”, he said. The Art Show runs from Good Friday, over Easter (10am5pm) then through to l the following weekend(10am4pm). Mr Chalk has praised the local businesses who make this event possible through prizes and support. “We must publicly thank Kosciusko First National Real Estate, Mitre 10 Jindabyne, Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa, Wendy Hukins Home Cleaning, Blizzard Print & Design, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Kunama Galleries, Mountain Maid Cleaning, Perisher, Nugget’s Crossing and NPWS for their support.” Without the support of these local businesses this event would not be able to be held. General admission to the show each day is by $2 donation.

Walked in for a cut &

walked out with a business

Last October, Lee TaylorFriend walked into Shear Delight Hairdressing Salon in Berridale and walked out with a new haircut and exciting new business idea. In four short months, Lee’s idea has become a reality, and as of March 1, Snowy Mountains Remedial Massage will be back up and running after a 15-year hiatus.

9 In four short months, Lee’s idea has become a reality, and as of March 1, Snowy Mountains Remedial Massage will be back up and running after a 15-year hiatus. “I went to Mandy for a haircut and was telling her about how I wanted a shop front again, said Lee. “She said, ‘You know my front room is free?’ As destiny would have it, Berridale was also missing a massage therapist after Nicola Johnson moved her business to Canberra in January. “It was just fate, serendipity, that I went in for a haircut and ended up setting up a business, Lee said. Lee’s story started far from the Snowy Mountains in the hustle and bustle of Sydney, where she worked as a property manager for a busy real estate agency in the northern suburbs. “It was a high pressure, high stress job in the hectic real estate world, she said. Lee’s life was brought to a halt when her father passed away suddenly. She took a step back, reassessed her life and made a decision that would completely change its course. “I realised stress really isn’t great for you, she said. “Money is one thing, but quality of life is another. Lee had been thinking about massage therapy for a while, and with the support of her husband, enrolled in a Diploma of Remedial Massage at the Australasian College of Natural Therapies in Surry Hills. Coming from a job where she rarely had time for exercise, Lee treated the career change as a lifestyle change as well. She walked 40 minutes to the college carrying a backpack full of textbooks and switched to a healthier diet. Through her course, Lee learned the way the body works, with a focus on anatomy, physiology, nutrition, remedial therapies, aromatherapy, reflexology and shiatsu.

“A lot more goes into study than people realise, she said. When Lee and her husband moved to the Snowy Mountains in 2000, she opened a massage therapy practice at the Banjo Paterson Inn and later, the Alpine Gables Resort. By 2003, she had two sons under two years old and was unable to provide the level of service she wanted for her business. “It felt better to step away from having a shop front, so I became a ‘stay at home mum’, which is the busiest job in the world! She said. “When my second son, Jake, was one, I started to write. I wrote stories of local people, got involved in community events and encouraged people to share their stories and history. In 2009, Lee’s husband had a lifechanging accident and their life was diverted in yet another direction. Lee started working for community services in Berridale, supporting people with dementia and other specific needs. She soon realised the healing power of writing and developed therapeutic writing and poetry workshops for Carers ACT. “It is empowering for people to learn a skill, said Lee. “Writing can be used as a positive selfhelp tool to increase wellbeing and reduce stress. Lee hopes to bring these workshops to the Snowy Mountains and combine her two loves, massage and writing. Lee has years of experience in a variety of massage techniques. She offers remedial massage, sports massage, relaxation/ therapeutic massage, pregnancy massage, seated/corporate massage, trigger point therapy, remedial therapies and reiki. From March 1, you can find Lee at 56 Jindabyne Road Berridale, next to Shear Delight Hairdressing Salon or call 0408 166 200.

“I went to Mandy for a haircut and was telling her about how I wanted a shop front again, said Lee.

THREDBO CRAFT BREWING FESTIVAL @ Thredbo Alpine Hotel Thredbo Resort showcased the latest in craft beer brewing in style at their inaugural Craft Brewing Festival in February.

Visitors from as far away as QLD’s Sunshine Coast and New Zealand enjoyed beer tastings from local and national craft beer brewers, watched a brewing demonstration by Kosciuszko Pale Ale’s brew master Chuck Hahn, and listened to great local music by the pool. Those lucky enough to attend the “Brews, Ales and Tales” Degustation Dinner with a difference, on Friday night, had the first taste of the wide range of craft beers on offer. Thredbo Alpine Hotel’s Executive Chef, Kane Stamp and the craft brewers collaborated to create an outstanding five-course degustation masterpiece, with a selection of matching beers for each course. For over 100 guests, the taste journey began with Merimbula rock oysters, dill and juniper salmon, beef brisket sliders, massive T-Bones with truffle fries, with a decadent dessert tasting plate to finish… if there was room. Each course was savoured alongside Pale Ales, Hop Ales, Lagers, IPA’s, Fruity, Dunkel and Porter varieties, and no-one was left hungry. “It was the most amazing meal I’ve had in the Thredbo, especially that T-Bone” said a guest from Sydney, who had never visited Thredbo in summer before. The craft brewers included Kosciuszko Pale Ale, James Squire, Yenda Beer Company, Capital Brewing Co, Jindabyne Brewing, Bentspoke Brewing Co, Monteith’s Brewing, Young Henry’s, Bridge Road Brewers, Maisel Weiss, and Modus Operandi. Nick from Capital Brewing said, “We were stoked to be involved in the craft beer

festival at Thredbo, and it was amazing see how enthusiastic everyone was about independent Aussie craft beer! We had an amazing time at the event, connecting with the crowds whose favourite from our tent seemed to be a mid-strength - our Summit Session XPA.” “Thredbo’s event was a great opportunity for Bridge Road Brewers to showcase our beers to a new audience. Our beers are well received in Falls Creek and Mt Hotham, and this festival gave us just the opportunity to showcase our wares to the ski-fields of the Snowies. Most importantly, it was great to see resort management leveraging small beer brands, and hopefully this opens the door for small independent business into the coming and future winter seasons. The crowd was great,” said Bridge Road Brewers Ben Kraus. With his locally based Kosciuszko Brewing Company, Chuck took festivalgoers on a craft beer journey through masterclasses, presentations, blind tastings and information sessions. It was an opportunity to learn how to become your own craft brewer, master and sample the unique flavours of local beer. “I am thrilled to be part of the inaugural Kosciuszko Craft Beer Festival at Thredbo, and even brewed a specialty Thredbo batch especially for the event,” said Chuck. “As a nation, we love the frothy amber ale, with over 200 craft breweries in Australia and double the number of craft beer volumes in the last five years, representing over four percent of the total market,” Chuck added.

Over 100 guests packed Thredbo Alpine Hotel’s Kosciuszko Room to experience a fivecourse feast, enhanced by carefully selected ales from 11 craft brewers exhibiting at the inaugural Craft Brewing Festival in Thredbo.

Camping in platypus country

With a picturesque river setting and a family of platypus just on the doorstep, it is hardly any wonder that the Bombala Caravan Park has been getting such rave reviews. The caravan park has steadily grown in popularity over the past handful of years, and just over the last holiday season was pumping with happy visitors to the area. Over December and January just passed there were almost 500 vans stopping at the park, with peak times in December seeing it completely booked out for several weeks. And overall, its visitors have been delighted with their stay! Positive comments have flown in for the caravan park, complimenting everything from the park’s cleanliness and amenities, through to the friendly site manager and convenient location. And that’s where the Bombala Caravan Park really comes into its own. Not only is the park situated very conveniently, just minutes from the main street eateries, pubs and shops, but it also sits on the banks of the beautiful Bombala River.

The river of course is home to one of the largest populations of platypus in the country, and this has been a huge drawcard to visitors, who have had the great pleasure of watching the platypus swim right in front of their campsites. In fact, many international visitors have come to the Bombala Caravan Park just for that experience, and have of course sampled the rest of the area’s offerings while visiting. Even should the platypus not be on show, the caravan park sits along a wonderful walking track that takes in the river, with two footbridges crossing the water, and two separate playground areas on offer. While the caravan park has its own barbecues and kitchen set up, the nearby park also offers covered barbecue areas, while there are picnic tables aplenty and even exercise equipment available at stations around the walk. And all is set amongst beautiful old trees that provide much needed shade in summer, as well as beautiful colour in the autumn, with flowering bulbs being another highlight in spring.

When you consider that the town itself is just an hour from the coast and little more to the mountains, the Bombala Caravan Park is certainly an attractive option for those visiting the region. Here’s what a few of its visitors had to say this last holiday season – “Really good park on the river. Lots of shade, green and leafy. Great spot for dog walks, near the river is off-leash for a part. Town people friendly and helpful. Playground next door.” “Awesome park right beside the river. Generous sites with some cement slabs and shady. Wonderful amenities, very clean, best disabled facility with heating in shower areas for winter travelling. Definitely would return.” “This is just a lovely site and a beautiful town; we would have stayed three or four nights if we knew how good it was. Fantastic amenities, amazing trees, big sites.”

DAN SULTAN set to headline THE PEAK MUSIC FESTIVAL

23 Gold Album Artist DAN SULTAN is signed on as a Major Headliner of the PERISHER PEAK FESTIVAL, not to be missed on the Opening Weekend of the Snow Season in Perisher, June 8-11, 2018. Dan Sultan is one of Australia’s most recognised and prolific songwriters. Music lovers have found a home in his ability to bare his longings and wounds, with Dan’s rich and soulful voice spilling all sorts of guts and glory over memorable rock and blues hooks. With a voice that is simultaneously sweet and rough, this front man knows how to turn on a crowd. DAN SULTAN REUNITES WITH HIS BAND TO PLAY AT PEAK This hard working musician will hit the road for a stream of intimate shows from March through to June. His fans are then set for a real treat at the Peak Music Festival where Dan Sultan will hit the Perisher ski slopes in NSW for a big gig reuniting with his amazing band, headlining at the 10th Annual Perisher Peak Music Festival. ARTIST LINEUP FOR AUSTRALIA’S COOLEST MUSIC FESTIVAL The diverse lineup for the 10th Annual Perisher Peak Festival also includes Hot Potato Band, Electrik Lemonade, Nomika (previously His Merry Men), Hussy Hicks, Allensworth, Balkan Elvis, The Morrisons, Felicity Lawless, Matiu “The Hook” Te Huki, Lizzie Flynn & The Reckoning, Sahara Beck and more. Evolving from their roots as a roving band on the streets of Sydney, they continue to capture their unique energy and interaction on stage. Hot Potato Band has put an Australian edge to its ‘multi-genre’ music which is influenced by ska, blues, funk, pop, reggae and afro-cuban, as well as the classic brass band sounds of New Orleans. Beware, as they make you the centre of their performance… literally! EXPERIENCE PEAK AT ITS PERISHER BEST In 10 venues across the Perisher Ski Resort, Australia’s Coolest Music Festival will boast its zany vibe for the 10th year, activating the mountain’s snow scene with an eclectic gathering of divergent music for young and old. Wake up to the fresh mountain air and catch a free lift on the Quad Express Chair to experience the sights from the top of Australia. Take a snow-shoe walk around the block to make the most of your time in the snow. To top off your weekend of fun, keep your eyes peeled for the phenomenal Perisher fireworks display at 7pm Saturday Night (subject to favourable weather conditions). As autumn reaches our region, we can expect some beautiful, big skies highlighted by Mother Nature’s own special light. Country shows over the hill

A country show is a chance to bring the community together to celebrate the backbone of rural communities, the agriculture industry. From sheep and cattle, poultry and vegetables, flowers and photography, there is always something impressive to see at a country show. It is a family outing, with plenty of entertainment for young and old, and a chance to catch up with your neighbours over a dagwood dog. Adelong – Saturday March 11 The Adelong Show is one not to miss. Entertainment for everyone, the kids will love going on the rides and coming home exhausted at the end of the day, showbag in hand. This year there is a new event added to the line-up, a Children’s Pet Show. Children can bring along their pet of any shape or size, with categories such as biggest and smallest, most colourful, best fancy dress and most obedient. Judging is to take place at 9.30am, so come along for a hoot. Another new addition is the hay section with categories of one biscuit, pasture mix and small square bale.

The Adelong Show also has all your favourites, horse events, Stockman’s Challenge, livestock sections and the pavilion entries.

Tumbarumba – Saturday March 17 The Tumbarumba Show is another fine example of a classic country show. This year you will find Bruce the Balloon Man, the Snake Man, the Kentucky Farm, Bubbles mania, rides, and many other attractions. Check out the pavilion entries for all the fresh fruit and veg, wonderful photography and art sections, and of course the delicious homemade cakes and condiments.

Batlow – Saturday March 24 Batlow, the country’s apple capital, have put their own style into their country show. The pavilion has a new installed ‘Great Wall of Batlow’. Using panels from timber apple crates marked with the names of the local orchards, the wall of the Batlow Show art exhibit is now a masterpiece itself. Another unique feature of the Batlow Show is the best dressed scarecrow. With kids and adults scrounging through piles of second hand clothes to find the most creative outfit for their scarecrow. For an entertaining day out in charming Batlow, you won’t find a better day than Saturday March 24.

Perisher Historical Society Host 2018 Conference

A PHS organising committee was formed at the end of last year’s Mt Hotham conference, and immediately began planning the Perisher conference, to be held from 5th - 7th May 2018. Corroboree Lodge have provided enthusiastic support and will be the focus for the social activities, including the Welcome on Friday night and Conference dinner on Saturday night. Perisher Resort is assisting by providing conference facilities at the Perisher Ski-Tube building for Saturday’s conference day.

A guided historical field trip is scheduled for Sunday, including an archaeological component at the site of the old Hotel Kosciusko at Sponars. The PHS committee urge all to attend, especially local community members, and gain insights to the area we all treasure. “This is an opportunity not to be missed! The conference is an opportunity for people who love the area to gain a real insight to its beginnings and history.” Perisher Historical Society (PHS) is a non-profit

organisation of voluntary people with a love of those areas accessed by the Kosciusko Road including Charlotte Pass, Guthega, Smiggin Holes and Perisher Valley. For more information about the Historical Society and the Conference in Perisher please email the President Phillip Woodman of visit their Facebook page or www.perisherhistoricalsociety.org.au

There are two great pleasures in winter life - skiing and après. This season in Thredbo there is lots to love about après with a mighty line-up of events, celebrations and entertainment both on and off the slopes. Whether it is a quiet drink by the fire with friends, layered up for live music outdoors in the Village Square or dancing in your ski boots till late, Thredbo has “after ski” covered in 2018.

Here are a few après highlights: Heineken Saturdays Village Concert Series 9 june

First Base Vintage Après Soirée 30 june

Corona Sunset Poolside Sessions 21 july

It’s back! The Heineken Saturdays Village Concert Series last year turned the village into an après party atmosphere like no other, with some of the best artists in Australia bringing the village and vibe to life. From Alice Ivy, Montaigne, Winston Surfshirt, The Faders, Hot Dub Time Machine and lots more, the village could not get enough of the Saturday night après vibes that every artist brought to Thredbo last winter. Best news is that it’s all happening again and the line-up is looking extra exciting.

It’s time to dust off the retro colour wear, one piece ski suits and of course…the fluro frame sunnies, First Base is hitting Thredbo for its second undertaking, which is set to be nothing short of ‘ the best après session ‘ to ever hit the Australian Alps. With thanks to Falcona and Canadian Club, this winter Tom Tilley & Hugo Gruzman are bringing some special guests that are coolest cats in the Australian music scene to bring the non-stop party vibes to Thredbo.

Summer vibes is what comes to mind when you first think of sipping back on a Corona… or two. However, have you ever experienced a sunset in the Australian Alps? Some say, it’s the best sunset you can enjoy, top it off with a bucket of Coronas, mates and some of the Australia’s best live artists…it makes for a pretty awesome way to finish off your day in the mountains!

Nestled in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, along the eastern rim of the Riverina food bowl, Batlow has become famous for apples, as orchards take easy advantage of soil types and climatic bounty. Quality fruit and vegetables, plus grass-fed beef and lamb, grace local tables; cold-climate waratahs and rhododendrons take a viewer’s breath away; but one of the best things about Batlow is the developing cider industry that adds value to Batlow’s famous apples. Apple cider proudly takes its place alongside honey, berries, nuts and nurseries amongst cold-climate specialties. It provides families with income and has the added advantage of bringing people together socially. Sparkling rivers and streams compete with Blowering Dam for relaxation and the freedom of fresh-water activities. Horse riding occurs alongside photography; ski resorts, caves and historical displays vie for attention in a region housing the nation’s Snowy Mountains Scheme; fishing spots are jealously guarded; but enthusiasm and imagination abound in arrangements for Batlow’s annual CiderFest. In the seven years since its inception, CiderFest has reinvigorated community morale and raised the bar on celebrations and major events. Its preparation/staging involves more than 140 volunteers who work closely with an enthusiastic organising committee to ensure that each event is the best it can be. On the third Saturday in May families are reunited, friendships are renewed, local produce assumes new popularity and apple cider reigns. In the lead-up to this year’s event (Saturday 19 May) world attention will be focused on a royal wedding. However, organisers are hopeful that “Harry’s Granny and Pa” will be in attendance at Batlow’s CiderFest because rumour has it that the “royal bucket list” includes a caravanning and camping tour of the Snowy Valleys. Details will appear on the website as they come to hand. One step at a time, hard-working community members are turning a small country town into a place worth visiting. Breathing crisp mountain air, growing fresh farm-gate produce and providing country hospitality certainly helps. Enthusiasm for all things apple is averting the threat of complacency; communitymindedness is driving the pursuit of excellence; and the inclusion of an annual CiderFest among major town events has encouraged townsfolk to become “excidered”. Further information about Batlow’s CiderFest can be found on Facebook or the CiderFest website www.batlowciderfest.com.au Chris Horsle

New data reveals NSW mountain range Snowy Mountains growing as hot spot for Aussie holidays

A number of towns in the NSW Snowy Mountains region are growing in popularity among Australian travellers, with bookings growing between January-June 2017 through the world’s leading hotel price comparison platform. Located south east of New South Wales, the towns were identified as travel hot spots based on an analysis of bookings on hotel price comparison platform HotelsCombined.com.au. The HotelsCombined. com.au platform attracted seven million bookings globally last year. HotelsCombined identifies a hot spot as any travel destination that has seen at least 20-30 per cent growth between January-June 2017. The towns experiencing growth include Perisher Valley, Berridale, Thredbo, Adaminaby, Guthega and Kalkite. Collectively, the yearon-year growth was 26%. Perisher Valley experienced growth of 82.4 per cent, while Thredbo – the most popular destination in the region by accommodation bookings – experienced growth of 12.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2016. According to data from Destination NSW[1], the Snowy Mountains region attracted 744,000 domestic overnight visitors in 2016, which was an increase of 5.8 per cent from 2015 visitors. Chris Rivett, Head of Marketing at HotelsCombined.com.au Australia and New Zealand, says: “Many people visit the Snowy Mountains during the snow season, so they miss out on experiencing the beauty of the region and mountainous terrain in the warmer months. “Contrary to popular belief, Aussies wanting to visit the Snowy Mountains should consider travelling over summer and autumn. There’s much more to see than just snow at Perisher Valley, Thredbo and Jindabyne, and it’s an easily accessible destination for a weekend away. HotelsCombined has more than 400 hotels in the Snowy Mountains region on offer, from luxury spa retreats to farm stays, hotels and self-contained houses. HotelsCombined.com.au’s top things to do in the Snowy Mountains outside of the snow season: 1. Experience a multi-day trek with Cochran Horse Treks where you’ll ride through the beautiful scenery and enjoy a campfire dinner. 2. Take a day trip to Lake Jindabyne and experience water activities including canoeing, fishing, sailing and canoeing. 3. Celebrate Autumn with local produce tastings and culinary demonstrations at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa’s inaugural Autumn Food & Wine Festival (23-25 March). 4. Throw on your cowboy hat and experience the Tumut Rodeo (April). 5. Take a landscape photography workshop with award-winning Australian photographer Ben Koplow on Snowy Mountains Photography Weekends (in May), where you’ll photograph the landscape, serene countryside and flowing rivers of the Snowy Mountains.

Canadian singer-songwriters JD Edwards and Cara Luft, and Australian star Claire Anne Taylor packed the Dalgety Hall on Thursday night, with around 120 local music lovers enjoying folk music and engaging storytelling.

majoring in Anthropology at Sydney University, but deep down knew she had to follow her passion for music, so became a professional musician in 2014. Through her study pathway, she has developed a global perspective,

During the winter, Claire will record and write new material for her next CD and spring tour. Claire grew up in a small rural village, Milabena, an agricultural town on the edge ag of the Tarkine Wilderness area are in north-west Tasmania, so many of her songs reflect the sentiment of small rural towns. She has enjoyed tow meeting the characters and me discovering the history of dis villages on this tour. vil After intermission and a Af delicious supper, Canadians de Cara Luft and JD Edwards C of The Small Glories entertained d the h audience with songs from their debut au CD C as a duo “Wondrous Traveler” and an unique arrangements of songs they love. Locals were delighted th by their down-to-earth manner, b warm friendly “Aussie” jokes. Cara’s w gorgeous laugh and stage antics g gave the show energy and humour. g

Starting in Tasmania at the Cygnet Folk Festival and touring ten small halls on the island, the artists also attended Woodford and Illawarra Folk Festivals, playing Goulburn Hall on Wednesday night. Each Festival of Small Halls tour is a collaboration between community groups, councils, state bodies, international musicians and other stakeholders. Festival producer Eleanor Rigden says the tour offers more than just a rare opportunity for towns to access a high standard of music. Claire Anne Taylor opened the evening with her acoustic steel string Robert Taylor guitar from USA (her father’s name is also Robert Taylor), and passionate husky vocals from her first CD “Elemental”. Claire gained her Bachelor International and Global studies

Claire won a busking competition at the 2013 Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival, a defining moment in her career. She has also recently picked up electric guitar, and loves the spontaneity of unplugging in the middle of a performance and mingling with the audience. Claire Anne Taylor delivers heartfelt folk songs that capture elements of her personal life and human condition. Her music ranges from warm, magical ballads to epic anthems and vivid storytelling, impressive vocals and engaging stage presence. She draws inspiration from her family, the e environment and global perspectives.

As this is her first visit, Cara has found Australia to be quite different to what she had imagined, reflecting that parts of the Monaro are like Calgary Alberta where she grew up. JD has toured Australia before, yet this was his first visit to this region. They are both enamoured by the variety of unique landscapes and communities they have encountered so far on this tour. Excited after spotting some kangaroos in the field, the interview was suddenly interrupted by a local grazier moving his mob of sheep with several black and tan kelpies down the main street in front of the Buckley Crossing Hotel. After rounding up a few strays, the mob was pushed up past the Dalgety Hall, across the historic Dalgety Bridge and into the setting sun. We may hear a song about “the long paddock” from this duo in the future!

the ambience at intermission, and dancing in the mosh-pit. The Small Glories handed out token trophies to two members of the audience, Eileen Greenwood and young Luka Pamphilon-Penning, for their folk dancing efforts. “The Festival of Small Halls is a wonderful program, that not only celebrates outstanding music but also puts the spotlight on regional towns and historic halls, connecting our present and our future” said Festival Organiser Eleanor Rigden. Vikki Wallace of Dalgety District & Community Association was delighted with the attendance and response from the community. She thanked tour manager Courtney Wild, saying “let’s see if we can get them back again next year”.

Girls on top OF THE MOUNTAIN

The traditionally male dominated world of mountain bike riding is in the middle of a revolution, with more women taking up the adrenaline-packed sport than ever before. Mountain Bike Australia 2017 Annual Report found more people are getting on bikes, with women’s and junior participation on the rise. Jindabyne rider, Vanessa Knee has been teaching and motivating women to get into the sport for the past six years. “There has been a real push for bike companies to put out women-specific clothing and bikes,” Vanessa said. “Cycle education, like skills clinics and camps have been really good for women’s biking as well because it gives women to opportunity to learn the basics and gain confidence on the trails.” Vanessa fell in love with mountain bike riding by chance while living in Whistler in 1991. “I was over there skiing for the season and someone said they were going for a ride, so I tagged along not knowing much about it. “I really loved it and spent most of the 90s in Whistler living the dream of skiing all winter and riding all summer.” Vanessa went on to compete in the National Series back in Australia and the World Cup in Sydney in 1999. She soon realised there was a gap in the market for women wanting to get into mountain bike riding. “I put up a Facebook post asking if any women would like to learn and 17 showed up! “It’s really taken off from there.” Vanessa’s passion for upskilling women in mountain bike riding led her to start her business, Jindabyne Girl Riders, in 2011.

Her aim is to encourage more women to ride in the Snowy Mountains area, particularly women with young children who have started to get into riding. Home of the highly successful Scardey Cats clinics, Jindy Girl Riders has helped women of all ages and abilities face their fears and get riding. Scardey Cats clinics are designed for women who want to learn the fundamental skills of mountain bike riding to help build confidence on the trails. “We often get women who are really afraid of falling off and hurting themselves,” said Vanessa. “We provide a fun atmosphere and great learning environment and as a result, learning to ride becomes really fun rather than scary. “We hear so many success stories from women who never thought they could do it. “Now, a lot of them are out there every weekend with their kids and even competing. “It’s so empowering, and really rewarding for me.” Vanessa was instrumental in bringing the National She Rides program to Jindabyne in 2015 and has helped put the Snowy Mountains on the map of women’s biking destinations. “For our small population in the Snowy Mountains, there is a huge number of women who mountain bike ride. Probably every second or third woman is on a bike; people come to the area and can’t believe it.” Vanessa believes this is partly due to the vast and varied trail network in the Snowy Mountains region.

“We “W are lucky l k that th t our area has h a trail t il network that is really conducive to women and children,” she said. “The local bike shops really support women and the whole area is really getting behind biking.” Local schools offer mountain biking as a sports option which encourages more kids and their parents to get into biking. “As a region, we are becoming a real destination for mountain biking, with trails at Thredbo being upgraded, great beginner trails at Jindabyne and the grant for the Cooma trail network as well.” Vanessa continues to compete in mountain bike riding events and lead the way for women wanting to get into biking in the region. Earlier this year she won her age group category in the Snowies MTB Festival and was the first of the non-elite riders to finish.

First held back in 1954 the idea was a festival to celebrate the arrival of autumn and the falling leaves which characterised the town’s many parks and gardens. In 2018 the Festival will celebrate its 64th anniversary and this year’s theme is ‘Tumut, Then & Now’. Tumut, Then & Now represents a look back at those things which made Tumut what it is today, and to celebrate where we are now as a community. The festival includes the cherished and long standing Coles street parade and the Snowy Hydro Market Place with stalls, food and live entertainment for the whole family. In the evening the Festival hosts the spectacular Visy fireworks display. There is something for everyone on Festival day, including great market stalls, rides and activities for the kids, live music entertainment and lots of delicious food and drink. Festival goers can kick up their heels with some old fashioned bush dancing including the ‘heel and toe polka’, and ’Do-Si-Do’ when our headline act the Australian Bushwackers Band take to the main stage. Fresh from five Golden Guitar nominations

at Tamworth this year for their latest album, The Hungry Mile, the Bushwackers proudly play Australian music, much of it based on the traditional folk and working songs of the early 20th century. The festival starts at 9am and officially kicks off with the Coles Street Parade from 12.30pm with festivities continuing down in Bulla Park at the Snowy Hydro Market Place and Entertainment precinct until 4pm. Then up to the Bull Paddock in the evening for the Visy Fireworks display at 7pm. Held on Saturday 28 April 2018 from 9am, Tumut’s Festival of the Falling Leaf is an event for the whole family. Driving Beyond

41

the Bitumen and Berridale with AAR

Mark Benson’s ‘Chimera’ is waiting for your business sponsorship, to showcase the Snowy Mountains region in the 2018 Beyond Bitumen Rally.

On the morning of 23rd March 2018, around 40 teams of off-road enthusiasts driving a mix of old cars and modern 4WDs, will take on the NSW Central West region in the Beyond Bitumen fundraising rally. Their four-day tour rolls out from Bathurst, and finishes around Orange on Monday 26th March, having tackled 1400 kilometres of forest and farm dirt roads. Last year, the rally traveled through the Far South Coast and Monaro region. Alpen Auto Rentals are entering their 80 Series Landcruiser in the event. Mark Benson explains “Our 4WD’s name is ‘Chimera’, a mythical creature made up from the parts of other animals. That fits so well with our car, as it’s had an engine conversion, and parts from so many different sources.” Mark’s Landcruiser has been with him for over 10 years, and has been integral to his journey with mental health, well set up as a getaway 4WD trip vehicle. Depression and anxiety have touched so many aspects of Mark and his family’s lives, and he considers this fundraising rally as a great opportunity to help an organisation that helps so many. The event entry cost is $2000, ($500 entry fee and $1500 minimum donation) and does not include fuel, meals and accommodation. AAR are seeking sponsorship to cover the entry fee, and donations to support this very worthy organisation. To date, this event has raised nearly $90,000. “This ‘variety bash’ style event supports Beyond Blue, and likely to attract substantial media attention. As our 80 Series is big and loud, it also tends to attract attention. We think it would be a great advertising opportunity to cover the vehicle in local business sponsorship,” said Mark. Since Mark Benson and his family bought the business in December, their focus has been to integrate with the

community, both in the daily lives of the locals, and with the broader tourism industry. It is also ideal to showcase the Snowy Mountains region, particularly smaller businesses who don’t have a big advertising budget. Mark’s concept for is to make the car a mobile billboard, with ads for as many local businesses as possible. “Berridale is known as the heart of the Snowy Mountains, where our business and home are now located, and we would like to proudly feature Berridale on our car. If I could get 40 sponsors contributing $50 each… we would get it over the line,” said Mark. Alpen Auto Rentals is all about helping people. Whether it’s helping customers with daily life tasks like a trailer to go to the tip, providing replacement cars when their car is damaged or breaks down, or meeting visitors at the airport with their hire car. It’s just natural for Mark to extend that philosophy to an event like Beyond Bitumen to raise funds for an important community service. “Our Open Day held in February was great fun, to put it out there, and meet some great people,” said Mark. “The Beyond Bitumen event is an extension of that journey, by giving something back through wider community service, whilst exposing the local Snowy Mountains business community to new customers who will see the signage on our rally vehicle.” The vehicle will retain the signage for a month after the event, spreading the sponsors’ message longer in the local area. For information on sponsorship of the rally car or rental bookings, please visit www.alpenautorentals.com.au or email reservations@alpenautorentals.com For more information about Beyond Bitumen visit: www.charitycarevents. com.au/beyond-bitumen/

To the limit

Aussie tri champs give their all

It was a hard fought race which came down to a battle of wills on the final run leg as international greats Sam Osborne (NZL), Ben Allen (AUS), Jacqui Allen (GBR) and Penny Slater (AUS) jostled for position in Saturday’s Australian Cross Triathlon National Championships on February 25-27. The Australian Cross Triathlon National Championships hosted at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa in the iconic Snowy Mountains challenged contenders with a course which has rapidly become renowned as the one of the toughest, challenging, and most rewarding courses on the international circuit, after playing host to the ITU World Championships in 2016. It was team Allen who dominated the swim with Ben (NSW) leading out in a time of 17:27, Gerard Wild (NSW) just two seconds off the pace and Osborne (NZL) right on their heels for the full distance of the 1,500m swim. Jacqui Allen (GBR) led the female race finishing the swim in 19:16, one minute and 33 secs ahead of closest rival, Penny Slater (NSW) with Leela Hancox in third. With a blisteringly fast T1 transition from Osborne, it was Allen and Osborne wheel to wheel heading into the 30km mountain bike leg which encompasses two alpine lakes, the Thredbo River, Kosciuszko National Park and spectacular views of the Thredbo Valley. And that was how these two great athletes continued for the full 30km of the heart pumping flowing single track before heading into T2 recording a time of 1:20:54 and 1:20:56 respectively. Brodie Gardner (Qld) made a big comeback on the mountain bike to pull into third in a time of 1:23:57. In the women’s race, Slater started to make up ground on Allen who finished the leg in a time of 1:34:16. Slater managed to pull back 20 seconds on her mentor to record a time of 1:33:56, while Hancox also put in a strong performance in a time of 1:36:20. Into T2 and this was where Osborne made his move on Allen, gaining a full 15 seconds in transition heading into the run leg and from this point he never looked back taking line honours in 2:23:38. Allen, who lost all his nutrition in an unfortunate collision on the bike, finished a fighting second in 2:27:44 and was the first Australian across the line, regaining his national title. Brodie Gardiner finished across the line in third in 2:37:52 and Jacob Storey (VIC) finished fourth overall and took silver in the Australian Title.

In the women’s race, Jacqui Allen demonstrated her domination on the run leg with a 57:14 split to hold onto the lead from Slater who recorded a 58:06 run time. Overall, Allen took the line honours in a time of 2:52:13 with Slater finishing second across the line and claiming the Australian National Title with Hancox in third and Maeve Kennedy (NSW) taking the bronze in the Australian Title. The TreX Series serves up a tough challenge for racers in the standard distance course, however, with Sprint, Junior, Teaser and Dirt Kids courses it’s also about participation. The TreX series offers an opportunity for athletes of any age or ability to come along and enjoy the off-road experience. In the sprint event which included a 400m swim, 15km XC MTB and 3.3km trail run there were also some amazing performances, especially from Queensland young gun Callum Kingston who took overall line honours in an amazing time of 1:08:53. In the Junior course Joseph Milgate (Qld) took line honours for the males in a time of 27:14 and local Catherine Stynes-Garratty from Snowy Mountains Grammar School for the females in a time of 32:26. The TreX Dirt Kids was certainly the feature event of the day with our young off-road champions of tomorrow aged 7-10 years tackling a 50m swim, 1.5km mountain bike around Lake Crackenback and a 500m run. After learning all the skills at a free tri clinic with international superstars Ben and Jacqui Allen from B&J Racing, the Dirt Kids raced hard and finished with big smiles at the finish line. The TreX series continues on its national tour with round 6, TreX Back 2 Back Enduro and the Queensland Cross Triathlon Championships hosted in the beautiful Moreton Bay Region in South East Queensland. Events are open to all newcomers and there are courses and distances to suit all ages and abilities which makes it a fantastic weekend away for the entire family. The Snowies MultiSport Festival is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
