Thredbo presents charities with Merritts chair auction proceeds

n a presentation at Thredbo on Thursday 17 October Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo Resort, presented six local Snowy Mountains charities and non-for-proﬁt organisations with $12,000 cheques as part of the $200,000 plus proceeds raised from the Merritts Chair Online Charity Auction. The remaining funds were then presented to the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation at their biggest fundraising event of the year, Radiothon at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead on Friday 18 October 2019. The Merritts Chair Online Charity Auction, held over the period 24 September to 1 October 2019, far exceeded expectations with every one of the 112 historic Merritts Chairs that were listed in the auction converted into monetary donations that will serve to beneﬁt the local and wider community. Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo Resort addressed the attendees at the cheque presentation in Thredbo and said “Thredbo, and the Snowy Mountains community is so fortunate to have local organisations that support, nurture and deliver so much good into our

community. It is only with the selﬂess commitment from volunteers and organisations who care, that we have such a thriving, supportive community.” Local Snowy Mountains charities and not-for-proﬁt organisations that attended the cheque presentation in Thredbo included: • Thredbo Early Childhood Centre • Thredbo Volunteer Ski Patrol • Disabled Wintersport Australia • Jindabyne Trail Stewardship • The Fly Program • Thredbo Historical Society The response on the day was extremely positive. Thredbo Volunteer Ski Patrol Ambassador Tommy Tomasi accepted the cheque on its behalf and said, “Our organisation is completely volunteer based and relies on support such as that shown by Thredbo to continue running our essential service. We love the mountains, including all the challenges that come with them, and we look forward to using this donation to help people continue to enjoy all that Thredbo has to offer.”

Rick Coate, Chief Executive Officer of Disabled Wintersport Australia said “Thredbo’s generous donation helps us to achieve our mission — allowing our members and their families along with DWA to provide equipment, staff and volunteers to ﬁnd freedom on snow, realising the barriers they can overcome and achieving independence. Our organisation is all about supporting grass roots level participation in snowsports and this money will go directly towards providing specialised equipment and aiding volunteers to help our athletes.” At the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation’s Radiothon, Stuart Diver presented a cheque to the value of $170,000 to the Foundation. Nicola Stokes, CEO of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation said “Thredbo really understand their place in the community and the amazing joy they bring to people each winter. The sale of the chairlifts and Thredbo's donation will help to bring joy to thousands of children who many never get the opportunity to ski. We are extremely grateful to Thredbo for extending joy to thousands of families across NSW and truly living their values of community support.”

TSM appoints Mr Luke Kneller as Executive Officer I

n accord with the TSM Board’s strategies for development and promotion of the region, we are pleased to announce the appointment of an Executive Officer. The successful candidate is Mr Luke Kneller. We were very pleased with the calibre of the candidates the position attracted and Luke was a stand-out amongst the very strong field of twenty (20) who applied. Luke is a Jindabyne local who has extensive and very relevant experience for his new role. Luke is tasked with helping to develop the next steps of TSM’s Business and Marketing Plans and will be responsible for their implementation. Luke has worked across Tourism Boards, broadcast TV, feature films, ski resorts, PR companies, publications and significant brands. He’s been involved in developing and executing marketing, communications, PR and media strategies as well as delivering genuine, engaging consumer content and experiences. Luke’s experience includes: • Founder and sole Director of Rhosa, a Production Company/ Creative Agency, through which

he has worked with Lake Wanaka Tourism, Tourism NZ, Air NZ, Japan Tourism, Devold of Norway, Amisﬁeld Wines, Toyota, Thredbo, The North Face, and Skins. • Co-Founder, Rob Kneller Youth Foundation, 2014 – present. • Expert Commentator, Sochi 2014 & Pyeonchang 2018 Winter Olympics, Channel 10 and Channel 7. • Winter Campaign Manager, Lake Wanaka Tourism, 2015 – 2016. Some of Luke’s recognised achievements include the following: • Mumbrella Travel Marketing Awards (2019) - Winner ‘Breakthrough Destination of the Year’ for work with Lake Wanaka Tourism. • Australian Young Citizen of the Year Award (2015) – awarded for his on-going work with and as the founder of the Rob Kneller Youth Foundation. • ‘Young Stars Rising Above’ Award (2015) – seen as a young role model in the Snowy Mountains Region for work with The Rob Kneller Youth Foundation. The Royal A pub for the people

he Royal Hotel has reopened and new publican Ray and head chef Ian want it to be the traditional pub it was in its hay day. The Royal was built in 1858 on the corner of picturesque Lambie Street, which used to be the main street of Cooma. Ray used to live in Cooma 40 years ago. Back then, The Royal was known as ‘Bundy’s’, after the owner Mrs Bundy. It was Ray’s, and many others, favourite pub in town. Wielding a wooden cane and a ﬁery personality, Mrs Bundy ‘suffered no fools’, as Ray puts it. She ran the pub for 40 years herself, and her legacy still carries on today, with many locals still referring to the Lambie Street pub as ‘Bundy’s’. One of the most iconic features of the pub is the cast iron decorated balcony. While many shops in the main street of Cooma used to have these balconies, they were all removed to make the town look more modern. Mrs Bundy put her foot down and fought to keep it. Ray and Ian want to embrace that history of The Royal, and celebrate the idea of a traditional Australian pub. Ray and Ian intend on utilising the balcony and are excited to get some live music happening up there on a regular basis.

The pub has been refurbished under Ray and Ian. The dining room has been given a facelift, and antique pressed metal wallpaper has been added throughout the pub. They have also added artworks from Ray’s personal collection and the ﬁreplaces have been resurrected. With outdoor seating, the bar, lounges and the dining room, there are plenty of options for patrons to choose where they are most comfortable. Ian describes the food as honest, wholesome pub grub. Fresh ingredients make up the traditional rissoles, bangers and mash, chicken schnitzels, steaks, pot pies and fush n chups, to celebrate Ian’s New Zealand heritage. They also have some fun retro dishes on the menu, such as prawn cocktails, and have had a bit of fun with the kids’ menu as well. “This pub is for the people, it belongs to the people so we want to look after their needs,” says Ray. The Royal also has 15 rooms available to stay, with shared common room and shared bathrooms. All of them have access to the balcony. Simple, budget style accommodation, just like traditional pubs all across the country. So call into The Royal Hotel for a cold one on a hot afternoon and say hello to their friendly new operators.

Wilderness Trekker The virtual guide to real-life hikes

ver been interested in hiking through some of the local National Parks but weren’t sure where to begin? Well, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) have teamed up with Google to create the Google Street View Trekker in NSW National Parks. This allows people to check out some of the states most incredible hikes and walks through the Google Street View from the comfort of their own home, before tackling them for real. Earlier in the year, NPWS rangers began trekking some of the NSW National Parks most spectacular walks, whilst carrying the new Google Back-Pack trekker, a 360-degree camera on their back which would take a 360-degree photo every few metres. The back pack mounted trekker camera is speciﬁcally designed to go

off the grid and works even in adverse conditions. The fruits of their labour mean that anyone can virtually take the walk through the Google Maps or Google Earth programs. The State has been broken up into six regions which will include the Street View Trekker. These are Sydney and Surrounds, North Coast NSW, South Coast NSW, Snowy Mountains - Kosciuszko National Park and Outback NSW and Murray Riverina. Within each of these regions are a handful or more different treks, accounting for 35 treks in total so far. In the Snowy Mountains - Kosciuszko National Park, you can experience the Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko walk, the Kosciuszko summit walk, Perisher resort trails, Thredbo village, South glory Cave and Jillabenan cave

at Yarrangobilly Caves and the Snowgums boardwalk over the main-range. On top of this, trained NPWS are able to occasionally take the backpack-mounted trekker into ecologically sensitive areas that are otherwise closed to the public, giving people a sneak-peek into areas they otherwise wouldn’t get to see. Make sure however, that when hiking these tracks in real-life, stick to the marked tracks so that these areas can be properly preserved. To start exploring these areas on NPWS Street View Trekker, simply drag and drop “Pegman” the little yellow man in Google Maps. Alternatively, you can visit www. nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/google-trekker and follow the links straight to the various treks.

The main race was named in honour of the movie, ‘The Sundowners’, which was ﬁlmed in and around Cooma, Nimmitabel and Adaminaby in 1959. One thousand locals were extras at the Ti Tree Racecourse when the race scene was ﬁlmed for the movie. This year’s race theme, therefore, is The Sundowners and patrons are encouraged to come dressed accordingly. Cooma’s Fashions on the Field this year has thousands of dollars of prizes to be won and Cooma also provides an ATM for the convenience of patrons. The new ﬂying fox attraction is sure to please local and visiting children and was made possible through the Stronger Communities Fund Major Projects Program.

In addition to the ﬂying fox a few more upgrades have been made to make the park safe and enjoyable for all who visit.

Grant funding was provided by the NSW Government to complete the flying fox project with the SMRC Facilities contributing additional funding to cover the grant funding shortage. SMRC Resource and Waste contributed to the completion as well by providing granite boulders for the playgrounds retaining walls and landscaping, giving the playground a new look. The principal contractor for the flying fox, Play Workshop from Lane Cove on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, is highly regarded for high-quality, intelligent and unique designs of Australian playgrounds. This big timber double, 30 metre flying fox is made of Australian hardwood posts, galvanised steel crossbars, stays and footings, stainless steel fixings,

A new connecting concrete path has been laid to join the existing playground to the all accessible flying fox, which sits on a bed of rubber under surfacing and certified playground mulch for a soft fall, preventing any serious injuries. Turf has been reinstated along with full playground fencing enclosure, new plants, a new boulder edging and retaining walls using granite rock which formalises the playground footprint. Construction of the new flying fox and playground upgrade was commenced on Monday September 16 and officially opened to the public on Tuesday October 29. This 43-day project means the neighbouring children and visitors can have a safe play space to gather and enjoy a much-loved attraction built in many playgrounds across Australia.

he Australian National Busking Championships are just around the corner, with the grand ﬁnal concert taking place right here in Cooma on Saturday November 16.

Then in the afternoon, winners from the other seven regional ﬁnals will come together to compete for the title of 2019 Australian National Busking Champion.

“His latest coup, however is that he discovered Tones And I at the ANBC Noosa Busking Championships. I remember Oz telling me “mark my words, this girl is going to be huge!” Oz then invited Tones And I to perform at Noosa Come Together and Gympie Music Muster. And the rest has been a meteoric rise for Tones And I with a huge Australian and overseas tour and number one hits in seven countries.”

Founder and organiser of the ANBC Allan Spencer says the regional ﬁnals have been fantastic and the level of talent in the buskers just continues to get better and better.

Luke Tierney, deputy director of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music and founder of Tier 1 Arts will also be one of the new members of the judging team, which Allan is also very excited about.

“The ANBC is entering its ninth year and I can’t believe how far we have come,” says Allan.

The ANBC creates a fantastic atmosphere in town and being completely free for spectators, it is an event not to miss.

The regional final will take place first, with local musicians and entertainers hitting the streets to try and secure a spot in the final.

“We now have eight regional finals across the country, at Stanthorpe in Queensland, Kilmore in Victoria, Narooma in NSW, Noosa Heads in Queensland, Peak Hill in NSW, Braddon in ACT, Gundagai in NSW, and of course, the birthplace of the ANBC, Cooma.” Through the ANBC and his local business, the Cooma School of Music, it is clear to see the passion Allan has for music and the power it has to bring people together. Allan sits on the judging panel of many of the regional finals, and the national final in Cooma. Allan will be joined by some new faces on the judging panel this year including Oz Bayldon. “Oz has a huge reputation in the music industry both in Australia and overseas,” says Allan. “Oz is the music director and operations manager of several music festivals including the iconic Gympie

he NSW government has launched a new app – I Spy Koala.

The app allows community members to record their sightings of koalas in the wild.

James says the app is a great idea, particularly in the Peak View area where he has seen evidence of the koala population increasing.

App users can enter information about the location and condition of the koala, as well as photos and other information.

“The app is very easy to setup on your phone and use to record koala sightings,” says James.

The SEED Portal was developed with and for the community of NSW as a central place for everyone to ﬁnd data about the environment.

Reporting koala sightings is essential to help koalas in the wild. Better information about koalas leads to better koala conservation and better planning decisions. The app is available for download for Apple and Android devices. If you see an injured koala, contact local wildlife rescue group LAOKO (Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans) on 6456 1313.

L’Etape 2019 L'Étape Australia 2019 will be held on November 29 and 30 this year. This is the last year it will be held in this region, as it moves to the South Coast in 2020. The huge cycling event is in its fourth year and provides amateur cyclists with the chance to experience conditions similar to the Tour de France. The event attracts thousands of cyclists who get to ride along closed sealed roads in the stunning scenery of

the Snowy Mountains.

In 2018, the fastest time for the Race was 4h:48m:45.

Motorists need to be aware the running of the race will result in road closures for most of Saturday November 30.

The Ride will follow the same route as the Race but will return to Jindabyne after Col de Beloka to ﬁnish at the L'Étape Australia village, which is located on the banks of Lake Jindabyne.

The local towns get into the spirit by decorating the streets and lining up with cow bells and signs cheering the riders on. This creates an amazing atmosphere for the event, and keeps riders coming back for more each year. There are two route options for the cyclists in L'Étape Australia. The Race takes riders from Jindabyne to Rocky Plains, Berridale, the King of the Mountain sections at Col de Beloka and Col de Kosciuszko and then descends back to Jindabyne.

Berridale Loop - 60km The Berridale Loop is one the shorter and gentler rides on this list, taking you through picturesque farmland without challenging elevation changes. Beginning at the Eucumbene Rd bus stop, ride for 16km before turning right on Rocky Plains Rd. Follow for a further 20km before turning right onto Middlingbank Rd which will take you through the town of Berridale. Turn right onto Kosciuszko Rd and return to the

The Route travels up the Alpine way from Jindabyne to the high point at Dead Horse Gap 5km past Thredbo Village. While the challenging uphill leg is not for the faint of heart, it is well worth it for the downhill return through the country’s most spectacular Alpine scenery.

Dalgety Loop - 80km This trip features an enjoyable but steep downhill section that leads into a steady undulating ride to the beautiful and quaint Dalgety township.

Heading down the Barry way from the starting point in Jindabyne, follow the road for about 4km before turning left onto Snowy River way towards Dalgety. After crossing the bridge in Dalgety, turn left onto Dalgety Way, maybe stopping by the town’s historic pub, on your way to Berridale. From Berridale, head left back to the starting point in Jindabyne.

Around the Block 330km

Around the Block is the longest but most rewarding ride the region has to offer, typically taking three days to complete, it covers the entire Snowy Monaro area and winds through some of Australia’s most spectacular Alpine scenery.

Day 1 - Jindabyne to Adaminaby 115km Leave Jindabyne towards Berridale and turn left on Middlingbank Rd and follow until you hit Snowy Mountains highway where you take a left toward Adaminaby. You can stay in Adaminaby or continue on to Providence Portal.

Day 2 - Adaminaby/Providence to Kanchoban - 105km Follow the Snowy Mountains Highway into Kosciuszko National Park past Kiandra. Turn left on the Link Road to Cabramurra, the highest town in the country. Continue until you hit the Alpine Way then turn left and follow until you reach Kanchoban.

Day 3 - Kanchoban to Jindabyne 110km This section is tough and uphill but also scenic and rewarding. Climb up the Alpine way to the top of Australia and take a moment to bask in your achievement at Thredbo. From here it’s a nice downhill ride back to Jindabyne through beautiful Alpine country. You’ve just completed one of Australia’s most challenging and cherished rides.

Late start to the trout season T

hose looking for a challenge this trout ﬁshing season are in luck, as while it is certainly possible to land the iconic bounty of the Snowy Mountains, prevailing drought conditions and inconsistent temperatures have resulted in a far than favourable start to the season. According to local guide and owner of the Adaminaby Angler tackle shop Col Sinclair, the season has got off to a late start. Late frosts and lack of rain have meant that the spring cycle of life has yet to kick into gear. “The season’s off to a later start than usual,” Col said. “It’s not beneﬁcial to trout stock and we’re not seeing the level of insect activity that we’d like to see at this time of year. So, everything’s sort of on hold at the moment.” While the conditions are not ideal, Col points out that

this has been the case for a few seasons now and that it is far from impossible to catch fish. “Trout fishing has always been hard,” he said. “I went out for a fish the other day and managed to catch three or four. Now while that’s less than I would have caught in previous seasons for the same amount of time and effort, it’s certainly still something.” Col conducts regular level checks of the local lakes for angler’s information. As of Wednesday 30 October, the levels are as follows. • Eucumbene - 29 percent and steady. • Jindabyne - 77 percent and rising • Tantangara - 23 percent and falling Despite this, Tantangara has apparently had the best start to the season and is currently fishing the best of

Michelago Spring Fair Biggest event of the year for Michelago

Coming up on Sunday 10 November from 10am to 3pm is the biggest event of the year for Michelago – the annual Spring Fair. Last year, 1,500 people came through the gates of the picturesque Michelago Oval. That’s three times the size of the population of the village and its surrounding rural region. More than 50 market stalls have registered for this year’s event. Their products range from plants, clothing, jewellery and skin care to all kinds of handicrafts and toys. There’ll be plenty of food on offer: French crepes, gozlemes, a big barbecue, wood-ﬁred pizzas, as well

as ice cream, fairy floss and homemade cakes. There’ll be a licensed bar and a coffee van. Entertainment is being organised to suit young and old. For the small ones, there’ll be face-painting, a jumping castle and alpacas to pat. For the older visitors, an exciting new Inflatables attraction, helicopter rides and rural displays will provide amusement. Over $1,000 worth of raffle prizes will be drawn on the day. The Captain of the Michelago Rural Fire Brigade, Brent Wallis, will have his crew on site to educate visitors about the importance of planning for the bush fire season as part of Get Ready Day. The Brigade will also set up the Smoke House for the children.

The Michelago Spring Fair is a community fundraiser jointly organised by the Michelago Rural Fire Brigade and the Michelago Region Community Association. Entry is by gold coin donation. New exciting mural for the town of Jindabyne A

t Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s meeting on October 17 a unanimous decision was made to allow a local Jindabyne artist to create a mural on the external wall of the Jindabyne water tank. Artist, Mike Shankster approached Council asking for their permission and approval to complete the artwork on the water tank along with assistance through a grant funding application to complete the concept design and artwork. The mural will be the artist’s interpretation of the view over the mountains.

Mike Shankster is a local artist who has been successfully creating large scale artworks up and down the east coast of Australia for the past few years. His unique style has been a major attraction to many councils throughout QLD, ACT, NSW and VIC.

In order to complete the artwork Mike will need funding and is in the process of working with council for a grant.

After completing multiple artworks on buildings, water towers, bridges and other city infrastructure he is keen to make a contribution to his home town of Jindabyne.

He uses multiple disciplines of art to express himself and the world around him. Mike’s focus and talents

are on commercial advertising and branding, painting, digital illustration and commissioned public murals. Mike has worked on many previous Jindabyne based businesses including illustrating No Bad Days Photography’s logo, Rhythm Snowsports over many project designs, Thredbo 365 logo design, Jindabyne Skate Park mural and many more. His high-proﬁle artworks have gained him work in collaboration with many businesses including Thredbo, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, YMCA, National Parks and Wildlife Services, City of Ipswich, Red Bull, Rhythm Snowsports and more. Snowy Valleys Council invested $385,000 in the redevelopment of the Rose Garden including raising the existing garden beds, landscaping and the establishment of new plantings, edges, hedging. New decomposed granite pathways and over 5,000 square meters of turf was also laid supported by an irrigation system.

bushes were replanted into the new garden beds including 121 white roses representing the people who lost their lives during the Snowy Scheme construction.

At the time, the rose garden was one of the very few rose gardens in Australia, providing a unique amenity for local residents and the many visitors to the township.

The Lady Hudson Rose Garden was originally established over several years commencing in 1959 when Khancoban was recognised as a permanent township. Len McInnes, working for the then Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority was given the task of designing the garden.

Today, the rose garden is a popular site for weddings, and a lovely spot to visit while in Khancoban. “It is looking fantastic again and we encourage local residents and visitors to come down to the garden and see the beautiful blooms,” said Clr Hayes.

Summer forecast looking bleak The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) released their most recent monthly drought statement on Tuesday 8 October. The report looked at rainfall deﬁciencies and dry conditions across the Murray-Darling Basin, which have been the most extreme in the country. Unfortunately, the immediate outlook is bleak, with meteorological trends showing no end to drought conditions in the near future as a near record strength positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) continues to affect much of the country.

A positive IOD means that there is less moisture in the atmosphere to the northwest of Australia, generally resulting in less rainfall and higher temperatures across most of the country throughout winter and spring. While the positive IOD is believed to be at its peak, the BOM is still predicting lower than average rainfall across the country throughout November and December. Daytime and night-time temperatures are expected to be higher than average across November and December.

The Southern half of the country is expected to be affected by a negative Southern Annular Mode (SAM) which along with the positive IOD, typically brings warmer and drier conditions to much of the southern mainland during spring. The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is expected to remain neutral throughout the rest of the year and the ﬁrst quarter of 2020. When the ENSO is neutral it will have little effect over the Australian and global

climate, meaning that other inﬂuences such as the IOD and SAM are more likely to dominate weather patterns. The BOM climate outlook is predicting a 75 percent chance of receiving at least 50mm of rain across the Monaro region between November and January, less than half of what’s expected for the surrounding Snowy Mountains, Southern ACT, South Coast and Victorian border regions. There is only a 25 percent chance of receiving more than 100mm over the same period across the Monaro.

Last L’Étape in the Snowy Monaro

his year will be the last opportunity to ride the Tour de France event L’Étape Australia in the Snowy Mountains, with it relocating to Kiama in 2020. This year’s event will take place on 29 and 30 November, with thousands of cyclists entering to take part in the closed-road amateur race. Following four successful years in the Snowy Mountains, the 2020 L’Étape Australia event will be held on 27 and 28 November 2020 in the rolling coastal region of Kiama, and 6000 riders are expected to take part. The Tour de France and its public participation event L’Étape du Tour move location regularly. Australia’s slice of the world’s greatest cycling race aims to share the beneﬁts throughout different regions of the state. Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said Australia’s leading tourism state, NSW, had exclusively secured the event for another two years. “We are delighted L’Étape will remain in NSW through to 2021. To date, the event

has generated more than $6.5 million for our state’s visitor economy. Ultimately, this contributes to the NSW government’s ambitious goal of reaching $20 billion in regional NSW visitor expenditure by 2025,” Mr Ayres said. Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro noted his support for the event remaining in NSW, encouraging the residents of Monaro to get involved in this year’s race. “Once again, we welcome L’Étape Australia to the beautiful Snowy Mountains for the fourth consecutive year. Levelling the GST playing ﬁeld for Australian hotel room sales

here is now a level playing ﬁeld between domestic and offshore sellers of commercial accommodation, like hotels, thanks to a change in the way goods and services tax (GST) is charged. Offshore sellers of Australian commercial accommodation (including online sellers) now need to add GST when selling Australian-based accommodation, when these sales exceed AUD$75,000 in a 12-month period. ATO Deputy Commissioner Deborah Jenkins said the change means regardless of whether you book an Australian hotel room through a domestic or offshore seller, GST will now apply.

“We’re pleased to see this loophole closed. This change removes the competitive advantage that offshore sellers had over domestic accommodation providers. It also allows businesses that book accommodation through offshore sellers to obtain a tax invoice and claim GST credits.” Ms Jenkins said. Ms Jenkins added that the change doesn’t affect offshore agents that organise Australian accommodation on behalf of domestic accommodation providers. “If you purchase through an offshore agent you will generally pay the hotel provider directly and they will charge you GST and provide a tax invoice.”

New pump track for Tumut Pump tracks are one of the fasting growing recreational spaces across the country, and now one is coming to Tumut.

“Following on from the successful 2018 pump track build in Tumbarumba, it’s now Tumut’s turn for this great recreational facility for all ages and abilities to enjoy,” he said. The asphalt pump track will be built in the south-west corner of the Tumut Bull Paddock near the corner of Fitzroy and Sydney Streets. “Situating it adjacent to the existing skate park and basketball courts means that this area of the Bull Paddock is developing into a really exhilarating youth

National recognition for Correctional Museum

he State Correctional Museum in Cooma has received a TripAdvisor Certiﬁcate of Excellence.

The museum has grown signiﬁcantly over the years and has unique and original pieces of corrective services history from all over the state. Many TripAdvisor reviews describe the museum as the best thing to do in Cooma. For just a gold coin entry, visitors get a one-hour guided tour from an inmate of Cooma Correctional Centre. Not only do they describe what it was like to be an inmate throughout history, but also share an insight into their current experiences. The museum includes the original gallows from Bathurst, over which people were hung for their crimes.

There is also a genuine rope used for hangings in NSW, whipping posts, stocks, death masks, a padded cell and much more. With so many historical correctional pieces from all over the state now in the collection, Statewide Manager of Corrective Services Museums Andrew Weglarz said it is not just about the Cooma prison. “I think a lot of people, when they hear Correctional Museum, they just think of boring badges and buttons, but it’s actually more about the whole history of Australia and how gaols link in with that.” The museum also includes a shop, where visitors can buy items handmade by the inmates of the Cooma Correctional Centre. The most popular items are bags

made from denim jeans, which are sourced from the local Salvation Army store. The majority of the money from these purchases goes directly to the inmates who made the item. There are also other items on display that have been made by inmates, such as intricate models of ships made from matches. A TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence is only awarded to 10 per cent of total businesses on TripAdvisor. To qualify for the certificate, the business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five, must have minimum number of reviews and have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months. The museum is open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Saturday at 1 Vagg Street, Cooma.

he charming historic village of Nimmitabel sits about 20 minutes southeast of Cooma, and at 1070 metres above sea level it one of the highest altitude villages in the region. It is also one of the region’s best kept historical secrets, and there is no better way to experience that history than through the Nimmitabel Heritage Walk.

Journey

Steeped in history, the name Nimmitabel means ‘dividing of the waters’ in the local indigenous language. The area ﬁrst saw European settlement in the early 19th century and was named “Nimmytabell” in 1837. Since then, the spelling of the town name has changed at least 10 times but Nimmitabel has remained true to its traditional farming roots.

Many of the towns most celebrated buildings and sites were built throughout the 19th century and the Nimmitabel Heritage Walk takes visitors on a tour around the towns most important historical structures. Beginning at the centre of town and working its way towards the outskirts, the walk showcases 11 historic buildings and takes roughly an hour to complete in its entirety. Included in the walk is the still operating Royal Arms Hotel. Built in the 1850s, the Royal Arms

famously appeared in the iconic Sundowners film starring Robert Mitchum. Geldmacher house is another highlight of the walk. Built in 1863 by John Geldmacher, the building was originally a general store before it was recently converted to a heritage museum. Geldmacher himself proved an influential local, a skilled craftsman as well as the general store owner, he also constructed the famous old mill alongside a number of other buildings and structures. The Nimmitabel mill was built in 1872 and is reportedly one of only two wind driven flour mills in the country. Other highlights of the walk include: The town well, St Andrews Church, the police station and lockup, Pioneer Cemetary, the Cenotaph and more. The walk can be done as a whole or in blocks and is accessible for all ages. A short drive further along Bombala Street to the southeast and visitors can also experience Pipers Lookout and the breath-taking views of the Bega Valley. Backcountry and hiking preperation

alking in national parks and reserves provides a great opportunity for solitude and selfreliant exploration. If you’re keen to head out on a longer walk or a backpack camp, that’s great – you’ll never run out of options. But always be prepared. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) provides the following advice to make sure you return from your walk safely. Plan your walk • Research your walk and make sure everyone is comfortable with the planned route • Go at the pace of the slowest person and don’t overestimate your abilities • Walk in groups of three or more people – in an emergency one of you might need to wait with the injured person while the other gets help. • Check the difficulty – some walks require rock scrambling and abseiling skills. If you’re not sure of the difficulty, contact the local NPWS park office.

• Check weather forecasts and park conditions and be aware that weather conditions can change. • You may also come across waterfalls during a bush walk, so be sure to also check our waterfall safety page. Tell somebody • Give route details to your friends and family or the NSW Police. Tell them about any medical conditions and when to expect you back. • Check in when you return • The NSW Police Force and NPWS provide bushwalkers and adventurers in the Kosciuszko National Park with a free loaned Personal Locator Beacon. Stay on track • Walking tracks in NSW national parks are not always signposted or maintained, so be sure take care. • To protect our landscapes for generations to come, please ensure that native plant and animal communities are disturbed as little as possible.

What to bring • You may not have mobile phone service; if you’re really heading bush, consider taking a locator beacon which can be used as a last resort. • For longer walks take plenty of water, snacks and a first aid kit • Wear or take appropriate clothing and closed-toe footwear and always take a windproof and waterproof jacket • Take a topographic map and compass and be confident with how to use them • If you’re camping take a good tent, sleeping bag, insect repellent and a torch. • In a natural environment, there is sometimes no escape from pests including mosquitoes, ticks and insects. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing to prevent bites, spray clothing and exposed skin with an insect repellent and reapply as directed, particularly if camping – and be sure to close that tent flap at night.
