4WD Treks of the High Country

Cathy Savage and Craig Lewis have travelled to every corner of Australia, from the tip of Cape York to bottom of Tasmania, through vast deserts and over great mountain ranges. They are full time travel writers and photographers and over the past 20 years have published 50 titles and sold more than 1.5 million books. From camping and 4WD treks, to bush cooking and Aussie pubs, Craig and Cathy are the Aussie outdoor experts. In 2002, they embarked on their biggest trip of all - three years and 200,000km driving around the country in their trusty Land Rover Defender researching for a series of 4WD tour books. “At the time, we were renting a place down near Cobargo, Craig said. “We packed everything up and put it in storage - we were essentially homeless. They decided to treat the trip as a chance to find somewhere permanent to settle. “If we found somewhere we really liked, we would stay there.

7 Craig and Cathy met in 1996 at the Variety Bash rally in Newcastle. Craig was doing freelance work for the weekend edition of the Newcastle Herald and Cathy was organising the event. “I was a four-star motel girl when I met Craig,” Cathy said. “He took me on my first camping trip and now we spend most of our time outdoors.” “Or in front of the computer,” Craig said. When they met, Craig had a collection of magazine stories about 4WD touring from his years of freelancing and was keen to put them into a book. “We taught ourselves everything, all the design and layout, and whacked this little book together,” Craig said. NRMA Open Road Magazine got wind of the book and featured it in their magazine. That led to the first edition of 4WD Treks Close to Sydney, which has sold over 100,000 copies and is now in its sixth edition. Craig and Cathy have since added an array of outdoor books and guides to their publishing house Boiling Billy Publications. They’ve written camping guides for every state in Australia which they continually update. They spend about three months of the year on the road and have published seven books this year alone.

“A few years back we put together a book on Australian Bush Pubs which became a bit of a cult,” Cathy said. The hardcover book features 45 iconic watering holes across the country, including Queensland’s famous Birdsville Hotel and the Tilpa Pub in outback NSW. “A lot of people travelling around, particularly grey nomads, would visit each pub and get their book signed by the publican,” Craig said. “It became a bit of a pub crawl!” The couple are most often asked about the equipment they use on their trips. “There are people out there with everything that opens and shuts, but they don’t actually use it,” Craig said. “We don’t worry about all the bells and whistles. The easier it is, the better it is. The most important thing is to just go out and do it,” Cathy said. Cathy and Craig are all about adventure, but are careful not to go too hard and take good care of their vehicle. “We’ve seen so many people ruin their trip because they were in a hurry,” Cathy said. “If you’re on holiday, that’s your trip over. Take your time and look out the window, it’s about experiencing

it all.” Their latest 4WD trekking book, 4WD Treks of the High Country, guides readers through the alpine areas of Victoria and NSW and features delightful mountain scenery, camping and fishing opportunities as well as the High Country’s unique history and folklore. “Our 4WD treks are not necessarily about getting from A to B the hardest way. We want to take people on a journey through places of historical interest and natural beauty,” Cathy said. As well as great 4WD tracks, they’ve pinpointed fishing spots, lookouts, bushwalking trails, waterfalls, river crossings, huts, historical sites and caves. Many of the 26 tours can be joined together, or done separately as shorter weekend trips. The ‘Grand Tour’ of the High Country strings together treks from either Mansfield or Licola in Victoria to the outskirts of Canberra using 4WD tracks and gravel roads while traversing only a small section of bitumen. Throughout winter, Craig was up in the mountains photographing the alps with fellow photographer Chris Munn. Their latest collaboration Alpine Australia is a hardcover pictorial featuring the rugged ranges of Victoria and NSW captured in the depths of winter.

So where did Craig and Cathy end up settling after that three-year trip around Australia in 2002? They travelled 200,000km to some of the most beautiful and remote corners of the country and have experienced more than many of us could comprehend. They ended up back where they started in South East NSW, on a property at Kybeyan. With their beloved mountains within reach and the coast just down the hill, the Snowy Monaro is where Craig and Cathy call home.

Thredbo Mountain Bike Park is open for summer chairlift assisted gravity mountain bike riding. After an amazing winter, Thredbo is now ready to welcome the huge influx of mountain bikers for a massive summer of adrenaline fuelled fun. Running from November 17 to April 28, Thredbo will be a mecca for two-wheeled action with the famous Kosciuszko Express Chairlift ready to take riders 1,937 metres above sea level to access over 20 kilometres of gravity mountain biking trails. The trails are in great condition, with the refurbished areas packing in nicely with recent rain. The retail store is fully stocked, new top line bikes are ready for hire, there will be lessons and clinics all season long available for all levels of riders, as usual Thredbo will be looking after the après side of things with festivities, parties, giveaways and entertainment throughout the summer. The opening of the Thredbo’s mountain biking season also means that Australia’s biggest mountain biking event, the Cannonball MTB Festival, 5-9 December, is not too far away. The scene is set for one of the hottest on mountain showdowns in the Southern Hemisphere with over 1,000 riders expected for the sixth instalment of the festival. The five day program is packed with five mega gravity inspired events and along with non-stop entertainment there is something for everyone on both sides of the mountain. The mix of events includes the prestigious Commencal Australian Open Downhill, Maxxis Flow Motion Cup, Osprey All Mountain Assault, Deity Whip Wars Big Air and the RockShox Pump Track Challenge on the Village Green. There’s $100,000 on the prize table, some of the world’s biggest names in the line-up and a fired up format, so the 2018 event is set to stamp its mark as Australia’s biggest, richest and most prestigious mountain bike event. The award winning event is not only on the radar to some of the biggest names in the sport, the format attracts amateurs and rising stars of all ages, mountain bike styles and abilities. There’s 20 categories in each event ranging from groms in under 13’s to the most experienced over 50’s, the Cannonball Festival caters to all and is a great introduction to mountain bike competitions. After a stellar World Cup season New Zealand rider Brook Macdonald is heading across the ditch, to race - consistent riding saw him cement his place in the world top ten. “I’m stoked to be coming back to

Cannonball, I didn’t have much luck on my last visit, I’m hoping to change that. Always good local competition as well, I’m looking forward to it” said Macdonald. The jewel in the crown, Commencal Australian Open Downhill, will be a world’s best spectacle. The record books show that only two people have won the event in both the men’s and women’s categories. Troy Brosnan and Andrew Crimmins have three and two wins respectively. Local rider Tegan Molloy and world cup racer Tracey Hannah share the women’s crown and will both be lining up this year. “I am really excited to be coming back for the Cannonball Festival, I love riding in Thredbo and it’s a great time of year to have a race” said Hannah. Other riders to watch - Aussie world cuppers Connor Fearon, Dean Lucas and Jackson Frew, enduro crossover king Tim Eaton and young gun Kye A’hern who is sure to take it to the top riders ahead of the world cup season. World Cup Rider and three peat Cannonball Downhill champion Troy Brosnan is returning to Thredbo to defend his title and see if he can move into a sub five minute time for the 3.5km track. “I feel like Cannonball is going to be bigger than ever this year for 2018. The events and fans are getting more exciting with more and more people making the trip up to Thredbo for an amazing weekend of riding and racing” said Brosnan. The event offers just as much action off the trails as on them, with the resort pumping with iconic mountain biking celebrations. Thredbo village will play host to an awesome line-up of DJ’s and live gigs with the region’s stellar offering of bars and restaurants also open. Event registrations are now open, please click here for full event details and to register. Thredbo Mountain Bike Park is one of Australia’s premier mountain biking destinations and this summer it takes gravity riding, cross country exploring and MTB action to a whole new level and elevation. With new trails opening and revamped existing tracks, there is over 20 kilometres of awesome riding to enjoy. From downhill, flow, all-mountain, cross-country and a number of skills parks for all ages, there is a lot to love about riding in the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park this summer from 17 November 2018 – 28 April 2019.

*IM=COMTEI %FIQ 3L;CF Perfect for those looking for an introduction into downhill riding or a warm up for the Cannonball. Starting at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, riders roll through flowing single-track down the slopes of the Crackenback Supertrail with never ending rollers and smooth berms to keep the flow going, it is a blast top to bottom. A new section towards the finish for this summer will test riders as they descend straight back into the Valley Terminal base area. The steady gradient and smoother surface gives riders a more mellow ride than the Cannonball, but still providing the adrenalin rush of downhilling.

Cannonball Downhill Thredbo’s signature trail, the famous Cannonball DH Trail takes riders to their physical and mental limits. Starting at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift and descending 600m vertically through the tree-lined Supertrail slopes, Cannonball tests riders with off-camber roots, rock drops, jumps, wall-ride and other technical features that the gravity specialists dream about. An exciting new section will see the finish arena come alive with two huge jump lines testing the most advanced freeriders.

All Mountain Trail The All–Mountain Trail starts at the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. Riders travel over 10 kilometres down through the impressive mountain landscape to the village below. Traversing across the slopes of the Central Spur area, the use of natural rock slabs rewards riders with spectacular terrain. The trail then passes the top of the Gunbarrel Express Chairlift, the door to the Cruiser area that is regarded as some of the best flowing single track in the region. Towards the base of the trail at Creek Station, you can either head back to the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift via the Village Trail Loop or the new Home Run trail, take the easy cruise back via the Friday.

Thredbo Valley Track Meandering along the banks of the famous Thredbo River, riders can maintain flow undulating through open grasslands and thick eucalyptus forests and cross some amazing suspension bridges. The section to bridge 3 (5km return) or Rangers Station (12km return) is perfect for the beginners with some climbing involved on the return trip. Continuing downriver there are smooth descents and short uphill bursts with rollers to keep the flow going. Riders can continue on to Thredbo Diggings (14.5km one way) or head on to Lake Crackenback Resort (20km one way).

The Man from Snowy River Rodeo’s 75th anniversary By Al Rowson This is a very special rodeo this year with the event turning 75. It is still the only continuous event linking the old town to the new town, a big achievement considering all that has happened over the past 75 years. The 75th Jindabyne Man from Snowy River Rodeo will be held on Friday December 28, starting at 11am at the John Connors Oval Jindabyne. It will offer all the high action events with the Open Bull Ride Saddle Bronc, open Bare back, Poley Buck jump for locals to show off their style, Junior and Senior barrel racing events plus the Ladies only steer ride was a lot of fun last year will ensure an actionpacked afternoon. The Rodeo is fast becoming one of the bigger events on the Southern Zone calendar with over 200 competitors taking part in last year’s event. The big attraction for spectators is its high action all the way the Jindabyne Rodeo is the first of three rodeos in five days with

Nowra and Moruya to follow. The rodeo committee would like to thank all the sponsors who continually support the event, if we didn’t have the sponsors we would not have a rodeo. The committee has made improvements up at the Rodeo arena again this year with shade provided over five of the grandstands to improve comfort for spectators, some more work on the back-stock yards to ensure stock/crowd safety and purchase of stock panels for extra yards at the back of the existing complex, also trying to secure a shipping container to store all the items that are used on rodeo day. The day will begin at 11am with some junior events with barrel races and steer rides. The action-packed afternoon will see the Bulls and Buck jump events. There will be a full bar and barbecue facilities on-site as well as side show alley and several clothing stalls will make the 75th Rodeo a great family day.

The Man from Snowy River Rodeo would like to thank the following sponsors for supporting this event: Snowy River Tyre Power, Snow Country Automotive, Lake Jindabyne Plumbing, Jindabyne Towing & Automotive, Terrences Oversnow & ATV, Pats Patch Caravan Park, Get Fenced, Sundance Bakery, Hogs Breath Café, Snowy River Travel, Caltex Service Station Jindabyne, Leesville Laundry Jindabyne, Jindabyne Real Estate, Snowy Mountains Audio, Banjo Paterson Inn, Greg Louder Electrical, Jindabyne Butchery, Kevin Biilmann Builder, Gavin Patton Plumbing, G T Mountain Glass, A & K Mechielsen, Kraft Earth Moving, Woolworths Jindabyne, Perisher Resort, Nick Kirshner Property & Livestock, High Country Outfitters, You Skit It, John Irwin, Jindabyne Refrigeration and Brumby Bar & Grill.

Situated in the heart of Australia’s high country, the Wildbrumby team is kept busy all year round, serving up the distillery’s award-winning line of schnapps, gin and vodka. Founders, Brad and Monika Spalding, have applied years of distilling experience to their growing range of Australian-made spirits. In November they rolled out a limited-edition Black Label gin, created from their awardwinning Rubus Patch botanical base, with added twists of festive fruit, elderflower and citrus notes to celebrate the ‘spirit of Christmas’. Brad Spalding says that unique mineral trace elements within the pristine alpine water, and hand-picked mountain botanicals, are behind the smooth and satisfying finish of his award-winning range of gin. “Our goal has always been to create unique and contemporary Australian spirits that bring something very fresh and original to their respective categories,” says Brad. “Exclusive access to home-grown organic fruit and botanicals has been the driving force behind our growing range of premium and liqueur schnapps, created with both local and seasonal produce.” Although traditionally associated with alpine regions, Wildbrumby’s range of Aussie schnapps can be enjoyed neat, on ice, or as a star ingredient in fruity, seasonal cocktails. A pure, high-proof vodka is also distilled onsite. As well as distilling world-class spirits, Wildbrumby is also a place to relax and be inspired, says Brad. Surrounded by a contemporary sculpture garden, visitors can sit outside and soak up the

stunning surrounds or enjoy the eclectic interior right beside the still, where imported ales are also on offer. Brad has made art central to the spirit and workings of Wildbrumby, and is also a celebrated local artist in his own right. “As you wander throughout the restaurant and sculpture garden, you will see many works to engage with the alpine landscape of the Snowy Mountains,” he says. “There, you can stroll through the Orbs, peep through the Bowerbird Nest, listen to Yellow’s carbon fibre reeds, or cuddle a Buisman rock.” Austrian-inspired meals are also available from Wildbrumby’s popular distillery cafe, where fresh local produce complements the daily menu. Monthly markets, music and special events are also an essential part of the Wildbrumby visitor experience, with local acts such as the bluesy Hip Replacements and the brassy Cooma District Band making regular appearances in the warmer months. All distillery visitors are also offered a free tasting tour, and can either purchase bottles onsite or from the distillery’s online shop. “Our full range of schnapps and gin is always at the ready, and because the distillery is open year round from 10am until 5pm, we pride ourselves on offering the warmest possible welcome to visitors to this unique region of Australia,” says Brad.

Blundell will be performing at the Cooma Hotel on December 1 (tickets via Moshtix). The first day of summer is a big one for live music, with local talent Oscar Litchfield playing at the Alpine Hotel Cooma, the ever-popular Jay Podger at the Bredbo Inn and Matt Dent at the Banjo Paterson Inn. Feast your ears on that! The following weekend kicks off with ‘Country Rocks’ at the Alpine Hotel Cooma. Multi award winner Tori Darke will take the stage on December 8 for what is sure to be a huge show following the Cooma Races. Get in early!

If you’re in the mood to show off your own talent on stage, head to The Federal Hotel in Nimmitabel for Karaoke Monaro on December 8 and 22, or Karaoke Night at the Cooma Bowling Club on December 14. The caroling continues on Saturday December 15 at Jindabyne’s Claypits Park. Entertainment from 5pm with carols starting at 7.45pm. There will be fireworks around 9pm - be sure to bring a chair, rug, blanket and your best singing voice! Local singer/songwriter Jay Podger will be back at The Berridale Inn on December 21 performing country classics, pub rock anthems and everything in between.

Then it’s time for the well known and loved Thredbo Blues Festival from Friday 18 - Sunday 20 January. The festival is bursting with talent in 2019 for its 25th year, with another amazing program of exceptional Australian and International blues players getting up close and personal in a music festival like no other. The following weekend is the famous Numeralla Folk Festival - the little festival with the big heart. The tiny town of Numeralla will be alive with music from Friday 25 - Sunday 27 January. Numeralla takes great pride in being one of the last traditional festivals in Australia, there are no tickets, no bookings and camping is completely free! It’s a long weekend of music, dance, dips in the river, yarns around the campfire and convivial conversation. ‘Country Rocks’ continues with Jonny Taylor performing at the Alpine Hotel Cooma on February 2. Jonny’s music has been described as a combination of Keith Urban and Pearl Jam and is sure to have your toes tapping.

Lobbs Hole Landing

high flying HISTORY

by Bob Piper

Deep in the Snow Mountains, out from Kiandra, lies the deep and remote valley of Lobbs Hole. In April 1937 one of the most amazing feats of flying in Australia occurred when a young pilot managed to alight there, repair his plane and fly out. Deep in the Snow Mountains, out from Kiandra, lies the deep and remote valley of Lobbs Hole. In April 1937 one of the most amazing feats of flying in Australia occurred when a young pilot managed to alight there, repair his plane and fly out. In April 1937 young Jack Price departed Canberra in his Gypsy Moth for Geelong in Victoria. His direct route took him over some real “tiger country” and as he approached the Yarrangobilly Caves his engine began to back fire. Tall tree, cliffs and steep valleys below and not a clear patch in sight to set down. Things looked very grim indeed for the young pilot. Col Hoad was doing his correspondence lessons at

Yarrangobilly Caves house when the Gypsy Moth passed over 30 metres above. “The engine was backfiring and with every bang a large puff of black smoke could be seen. “I fully expected the plane to crash,” he has recounted in recent years. However, the Moth somehow continued down the valley with occasional surges of power, its light weight and dual wings still providing some sort of gliding ability. One mistake, turning up a blind valley of hitting a tall tree would have been fatal. Winding in and down the valleys, just above the Yarrangobilly River, pilot Price just made the old, and then abandoned, copper mine town of Lobbs Hole. A small clearing suddenly came into view and with incredible skill and luck Jack set it down safely. Stepping out and looking around he found the valley deserted. An old home on a nearby hill looked promising so he went up there, nobody answered so he opened the door. Joy oh joy, there was food inside and on the wall was an ancient telephone. In fact our daring pilot had entered the winter home of George Yan, who was up in Kiandra for the summer months. Surrounding the home were 900 metre mountains and the whole area really appeared like a forgotten Shangri-La.

Eventually curiosity was too much for Jack and he lifted the receiver on the phone and spun the handle. It rang and a young girl answered at the other end. It was nine-year-old Patricia Paterick at her grandfather’s home and post office at Kiandra, 20 kilometres to the east. The exchange there was still connected to the remote valley home. Jack was advised by the Yan family to stay at the home, use the food and facilities, and they would come down by horseback to assist him. At the same time Jack managed to slowly relate to the family how the order the magneto part he required from South Australia, by telegram, to repair his plane. In due course the new magneto arrived and our intrepid airman managed to repair his Gypsy Moth. Now the big moment had arrived. How to get sufficient speed to take off and fly out of the tiny clearing. The aircraft

was unloaded of as much weight as possible including a spare wheel, heavy tarpaulin cover and even a trophy cup Jack had won in a flying competition. In fact the cup was a present to the family who had so kindly assisted him.

19

The Moth was towed up a slight gradient by a horse and tied to a large stump, facing downhill. The engine was revved up to its maximum power and at a signal from Jack the rope was cut. The Gypsy Moth raced down the hill, quickly gathered speed and took off. Up and up it climbed. Col Hoad’s father later told him that George Yan, when describing the plane’s departure said “He riz (rose) and riz, and he riz until he was almost out of sight like an eagle”. But there is more to Jack Price and his flying career. On the way to Melbourne he stopped at Albury to refuel and on takeoff his wheels struck a ditch. The Moth tipped forward on its nose, smashing the propeller. Price was not injured and the aircraft had to be taken to Melbourne by truck for repairs. By 1941 Jack Price had joined the RAF Ferry Command as a command captain transporting large bombers from Canada to Britain. On 10 August 1941 he lost his life when a four engine Liberator transport took off in bad weather with a crew of three and 19 pilot passengers. It crashed, low flying, into a peak on Arran Island off Scotland killing all on board. Today Jack is buried on the

same island with most of the others on board. His epitaph on white marble and the RAF badge reads: Captain Jack Price for Australia. RAF Ferry Command. 10 August 1941 Aged 30. A long way from a remote mountain valley in the Snowy Mountains and the rumours and legends that have existed for over 70 years of his amazing flying feat. Today Col Hoad (92) and Patricia Howard (90) nee Paterick, live at Tumut NSW. It was only this year that Jack Price was finally identified for his amazing mountain valley landing by the writer’s aviation historian friend, Neil Follett, in Melbourne. # The author of this story, Bob Piper, is a Canberra based military historian who has flown in and around the Snowy Mountains in light aircraft for over 30 years and prior to that in New Guinea. He is well able to appreciate Jack Price’s remarkable flying feat in 1937. Anybody who wishes to contribute to this story please email: kendallpiper@hotmail. com

24 HOUR NRMA DEPOT - TOWING SERVICE

Snowy Scheme Museum History of the Museum On April 6 April 2002 an unusual event took place in Adaminaby. A unique collection of machinery and vehicles, that had been used to run an earth-moving business by the Kennedy brothers (Max and the late Cliff Kennedy), was offered at auction. Fascinating from an historical perspective was that many of the machines and vehicles had been used for the construction of the Snowy Scheme. Max and Cliff Kennedy were contractors on the Scheme, purchasing some of the machinery and vehicles to support their locally based operation after 1974. Interested people came from all over Australia to form part of the 2000 strong crowd, with 600 registered bidders attending the auction. The event drew media attention and was featured on the ABC’s 7.30 Report. A month prior to the auction, a group of local residents formed a committee with the aim of retaining as much as possible of this history in Adaminaby. Frantic activity before the auction saw the committee raise $40,000 from interested individuals and organisations, which allowed the purchase of eight of the 10 items identified as the most historically important. These eight items were the beginning of a unique collection and the formation of an association known as the Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection. The idea for a museum was born. The Collection The Snowy Scheme Museum houses a nationally significant collection and exhibits material relating to the design, construction and operation of the Snowy Mountains HydroElectric Scheme in NSW. The collection commenced in 2002 with the purchase of eight large technology items: TD24 and BTD6 bulldozers, a Le Tourneau scraper, a Harman face shovel, an Albion Tipper, a man-haul bus trailer, a tunnel testing dome plug and a V-shaped snow plough. Today the collection includes machinery, historic vehicles, laboratory equipment, surveying and drafting equipment, artworks, photographs, maps, plans, paper records, books, pamphlets, newsletters, small tools and equipment, precision instruments, medical equipment and domestic items of the Scheme’s era. The objects and materials of the collection continue to be acquired

through donations or purchases and there are more than 1000 items in the collection. The collection has three separate categories which reflect the Museum’s three subject areas: Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme Historical collection; Museum Collection; and Archive Collection. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme Historical Collection is the Museum’s core collection, representing material relating to the design, construction and operation of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. It is both representative and selective. The Museum Collection contains material of historical importance, but it does not meet the higher level criteria required for inclusion in the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Historical Collection. The Archive Collection comprises historically important documents, photographs and/ or material that assists in interpretation of material in all other parts of the collection. New Acquisitions The Cooma North Post Office Collection comprises a sign from the front of the former post office building, two mail bags, a bank of private mail boxes, a cabinet containing keys to the private mail boxes, two stainless steel mail boxes plus seven small signs. The collection has recently been acquired for the museum, thanks to the foresight of two of our long standing volunteers: Hazel Mackenzie-Kay and Glynn Kay of Cooma. What does this collection have to do with the Snowy Scheme Museum? Prior to purchase, the Cooma North Post Office Collection was appraised by our Honorary Curator, Denis Shephard. Denis reported that the collection is historically significant because of its general association with one of Australia’s largest national engineering and construction achievements; and for its specific association with housing established for workers on the Snowy Scheme. Cooma North and Cooma East were two new settlements constructed close to the existing township of Cooma where the headquarters of the Snowy Mountains Authority had been established. Construction of Cooma North commenced in 1949, with the provision of a range of different styles of cottages to accommodate its future residents. The Cooma North Post Office Collection is likely to become part of a display featuring many aspects of family and community lifestyles during the construction era of the Snowy Scheme.

australia day

conquer kozzie

Bombala has been selected as the centre of Australia Day celebrations for the Snowy Monaro region in 2019. This is the first time Bombala has had the opportunity to host the regional celebrations and will combine that honour with the town’s usual Australia day activities. With the NSW Strong Wool Shearing Championships being held on the weekend of Australia Day each year in Bombala, it is an important date, and January 26, 2019 is no different. The Bombala Australia Day Celebrations will include a full day of shearing competition, a well as other traditional favourites such as the Citizen of the Year Awards. There will also be an address from the region’s 2019 Australia Day Ambassador, while the National Anthem always concludes the official ceremony of the day. But if you thought you knew what else to expect from Bombala’s Australia Day activities, then you might be wrong. In 2019 there are some exciting new additions, the most unusual of which will include an Eel Fishing Competition! This will actually kick off the week before Australia Day, with Dave Goodyer doing the honours in terms of measuring and weighing the catches, but you can be assured that the bragging photos will be on show for all to see.

Thredbo is inviting Aussies to celebrate Australia Day at the highest point in Australia, on top of Mt Kosciuszko 2228m.

Another newbie to the line up will be inflatable golf darts. Yes, you read that right! A giant inflatable dart board will be set up on the day, with punters using golf clubs to drive their velcro darts towards the bulls-eye to battle it out for the highest score. Australia Day goers can also look forward to the return of the Zorb Balls that proved so popular this year, while the jumping castle and kids craft activities will also keep the young amused. The horse enthusiasts among the kids will have the added excitement of a Horse Funkhana on the day, while the Delegate Pony Club will be catering with lots of tasty food for all. That brings us to the second year of the Sausage Making Competition, and once again the happy crowd will serve as judges, so the more discerning sausage lovers on board the better! What else can we throw in? How about a photography competition, some raffles and a possible chainsawing demonstration? And let’s kick the whole day off with a Mini Triathlon for all ages! Yes, Australia Day in Bombala is shaping up to be an absolute cracker, so make sure you set aside Saturday, January 26, 2019 for some Aussie fun at the Bombala Exhibition Ground.

Perfect for the family or a long weekend away with mates, Thredbo will be taking Australia Day festivities to new heights celebrating with an exciting line up of iconic Aussie entertainment and activities, offering an unforgettable Australia Day!

9am At your own leisure start hike to Mt Kosciuszko – Make sure you pick up a free Australian flag from the bottom of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift.

10am - 2pm Grab a snag from Australia’s highest BBQ located at Rawson Pass. Gold coin donation to go toward the Children’s hospital foundations Australia.

12pm Stand of top of Australia and listen to the iconic the man from the Snowy River poetry reading. Don’t forget to share you experience and #conquerkozzie

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

(M.App.Sc Physiotherapy& M.App.Sc.Human Movement)

She lies proud and forgotten amongst the peaks out from Kiandra and is now becoming a part of the alpine environment. With her rusty panels and just a glimmer of chrome on door handles and a front bumper she’s an Australian motoring icon, in fact a rare 1936 Ford utility. Who owned her, where did she work, what loads did she carry and what roads did the amazing old Ford follow. Perhaps some reader knows? However, for the present she remains a mystery in a remote and inaccessible area. In 1932 or thereabouts, legend has it, a farmer’s wife wrote to Ford in Melbourne and asked them to build a vehicle “that could be used on her property all week but was proper enough to go to church on Sundays”. Ford liked the idea and set one of their young engineers, 22-year-old Lewis Brandt, to the task.

Defying all odds the 1934 Ford utility was born and sold for around 295 pounds. In today’s money this is approximately $35,000. Henry Ford back in America was impressed and is said to have called his latest creation down under, the “kangaroo chaser”. In their first year, 345 came off the Geelong (Victorian) production line with many more and newer models in the years to follow. The new ute was an instant Australian success. In those days, nearing the end of the Great Depression, banks were reluctant to lend money to farmers for cars. But this was different, this vehicle could carry a hefty payload for the farm and make money. With a strong 221 cubic inch V8 engine that put out 75 horse power (56 Kw) and ran a low compression of only 6.33 to one it is said the Ford at the time was

very economical, at around 22 miles per gallon. Australians continue their love affair with the powerful V8 engine and their utes right up to today, some 80 years later. Some of these 1930s Ford utilities still exist in Australia, converted by the hot rod fraternity or restored back to their original immaculate condition. # Bob Piper, in Canberra, discovered the old Ford in a remote area in the Snowy Mountains while photographing wild horses and dingoes. He is still pondering how and when the old girl got there. He wanted to share his photos and story with readers in the hope that someone may know the history behind this unique old Ford. Old timers from Kiandra who he spoke to can’t remember it in their area in the 1950s.

Lower altitude streams begin to get a little low and warm often at this time, but that’s okay as the beautiful rivers and streams in Kosciuszko National Park really come into their own now. Most of you already know that we‘ve just had another excellent snow season with above average snow depths. Couple this with some regular rainfall since the trout season began and the outlook is looking great for summer fly fishing. Early summer will see some of the waters a little high on occasions and a two-fly rig with a small nymph trailing a couple of feet or so under a larger buoyant dry fly will often be the best choice when this is the case. But the big attraction at this time is the dry fly fishing on offer in these beautiful clear waters. There’s nothing quite like quietly wading a pristine mountain river, enjoying the surrounds and either spotting a trout (with the aid of polarize lens sunglasses) or searching likely holding water with a dry fly. Of course, if we can see the fish then they likely can see us too! So, a careful approach is always necessary. It’s interesting how often the fly fishers I’m either teaching or guiding haven’t realized that trout being wild creatures will run for cover at the first sight/hint of danger – us!

Fortunately, the trout in these mountain rivers aren’t often too fussy when it comes to fly selection. Royal Wulffs, Red Tags and Adams dry flies are all great all-rounders and will do the job most of the time. As summer progresses, grasshoppers will also be on the menu and it’s hard to go past a Stimulator dry fly when the hoppers are about. As mentioned earlier, a nymph or two and a couple of bigger wet flies may be handy after some rain if the water’s up. Brown, Hares Ear or olive nymphs with a little weight are useful. Most fly fishers practice catch and release on our rivers these days, so if you’re after a feed, the big lakes, which are regularly stocked, are the best bet. Lakes Eucumbene and Jindabyne both have some good midge hatches in December and finding some trout rising (surface feeding) in shallow bays in the afternoon tends to be a giveaway. Trying a pupa pattern up to a metre under a midge ball can get results. Dragon fly lava (Mudeye) patterns fished early or late evening are the mainstay for many lake fishers in summer right through to mid-autumn. With such a bright outlook for the coming months I’ll be out there as often as I can and hopefully you will too.

DON’T LET THE WATER WASTE YOUR LIFE OR YOUR MATES In the lead up to summer, Member for Monaro John Barilaro is urging the community to stay safe in and around the water, as the NSW Government launches its 2018 water safety advertising campaign. “Last summer, 36 people tragically drowned in NSW waterways, and seven of those were between Christmas and 2 January 2018,” said Mr Barilaro. “While this is an improvement on the 2016-17 summer, we want everyone to return home safely from their day enjoying the water. “Each year, men aged between 18 and 24 are overrepresented in our state’s drowning deaths and I am urging them to look out for their mates and don’t drink alcohol or take drugs before swimming. “The Monaro is home to many beautiful waterways; we can all play our part to keep safe around them this summer.” Based on the findings of a Royal Life Saving NSW (RLSNSW) report, the Be Water Safe, Not Sorry campaign aims to drive home the very real risks associated with water and educate people on what they can do to stay safe, including:

• Stay sober – don’t drink or take drugs and then go swimming • Always supervise small children in or near water – don’t let phones or household jobs distract you. Expanding on last year’s campaign, people will be reminded to stay safe as they head to the beach, pool or other waterway via radio, social media, newspapers, billboards and buses, and while listening to summer playlists. Minister for Police Troy Grant said people are understandably excited for the Christmas break and school holidays, and often flock to our beautiful waterways to celebrate this period. “Unfortunately, the festive season is also the peak time when we lose loved ones to drowning, especially on public holidays” said Mr Grant. “While we want everyone to have a good time, mates don’t let mates do stupid things, so we are reminding everyone to take care and step in if you think someone shouldn’t be swimming. “Just like the NSW road toll, we want zero fatalities at our beaches and waterways, so please remember – where there’s water there’s danger.”

Jindabyne 2036

Consultation into the revitalisation of Jindabyne has begun, under a prpgram announced by Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, and Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts. ‘Jindabyne 2036’, is a new plan to revitalise Jindabyne in a $2.4 million masterplan to 2036. Mr Barilaro said Jindabyne is bursting with potential, and now is the time to act and form a clear vision for the future. “Jindabyne is the gateway to the beautiful Snowy Mountains, it is a thriving town with enormous potential for growth, and proper planning will see Jindabyne become known as the nation’s premier alpine destination,” he said. “This masterplan will ensure Jindabyne is not only able to cope with future growth, but is also in a position to thrive for decades to come. “Jindabyne is home to a landscape that tourists and visitors dream of, but it is also a fantastic place to live, work and raise a family. The masterplan will take into account the needs of permanent residents, as well as the region’s tourism needs for the future.

“We need to focus on delivering well planned, efficient and sustainable development that complements the region, supporting the unique character of the beautiful Snowy Mountains. I am looking forward to delivering a detailed plan for the growth of Jindabyne.” Mr Barilaro said the plan would: • Include analysis on the location of future services including schools, health services and community centres. • Set out a plan to unlock the Lake Jindabyne foreshore, allowing better utilisation of the lake and greater access to the CBD’s focal point. • Look at the links and opportunities in surrounding towns and villages including Adaminaby, Berridale and Dalgety. • Identify sites for future residential and commercial developments. • Investigate the potential of a bypass, taking busy traffic out of the CBD. • Redesign Jindabyne as Australia’s premier alpine destination. Mr Roberts said Lee Shearer APM, who heads up the state’s Resource Regulator, would lead the development of the masterplan.

Hoping to involve entrants from the whole region this year, Tony is excited for an even bigger event for 2019. The race will be held on January 20, 2019 at the Cooma Showground, starting at 9am for entrants and 11am for general public. A gold coin donation is required as entry from spectators. All the funds raised will go to the Community Chest. This event will have all the carts checked on the morning of the event to ensure they meet all the requirements. Entry forms can be collected from either Roses Restaurant or the Cooma Visitors Centre. They are also available to cut out here in The Snowpost. Places are limited so get in quick with your entries. There are six categories for the derby including 5-8 years, 9-14 years, 15-18 years, 18+ years, novelty and business/group. Each cart can have up to three runs. The carts must have no more than six wheels and no less than three. The maximum measurements of the cart are 1200mm high, 2400mm long and 1200mm wide. They must

have working brakes, with no sharp of dangerous objects. Tony says this year the competition is looking for more classic and novelty carts. The Cooma Car Club have purchased some new inflatable arches to mark the starting and finishing lines, which Tony says will look fantastic. “I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to enter. It’s a good opportunity for businesses to get their team together and enter a creative cart for some healthy competition. “It’s a good chance to get those creative juices flowing. We have seen some wonderful entrants in previous years and it is always exciting to see what people can come up with in terms of the designs. “It’s a great family day out for spectators and competitors alike, so make sure you come along.” Last year the quickest speed was 42km per hour and Tony is keen to see even faster times this year. The fastest run of the day was in the five to eight years division, where Reece Allport won in 17 seconds flat.

Everything but the kitchen sink A bribe from her husband, Dale, enticed Lee Poulton to move to Berridale. Dale promised Lee she could have all the animals she wanted if she moved from Avalon on the northern beaches of Sydney, to the Snowy Mountains. Lee has worked in retail since she was 15 years old, firstly in a pet shop and then in other retail outlets. When she first started work in the pet shop she was assigned to look after the fish, then later was given the birds to look after. There began a life-long love of birds. Known as the Berridale Bird Lady, Lee is a valued volunteer for the organisation, LAOKO (Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans). When Lee turned 21, she decided it was time to think about a secure career so she enrolled in a floristry course at her local TAFE College. After completing her course, Lee landed a job working in the florist shop in the prestigious Sheridan-Wentworth Hotel in Sydney. Lee said the shop would be called upon to dress the windows of the David Jones store in the city with elaborate flower displays, well as various floral arrangements within the store. “During Fashion Week, we were also busy making beautiful flower arrangements for the various fashion parades,” Lee said. When the florist closed down, Lee was overwhelmed by the number of people suggesting she start her own business. “I didn’t think I could open a shop on my own,” Lee said. But eventually she took the advice and decided to open her own shop in the old stone bakery.

Lee has been collecting all manner of things since she was a child. “I started collecting milk bottle tops when I was eight years old,” she said. “My father owned a pawn shop, so I guess it is in my blood.” Lee’s shop is above the Mark Kenmir and Co. office and the Whisk and Cocoa Café, next door to The Berridale Bakery and petrol station. She carried the name, Stone Cottage with her when she moved to the new premises in July 2016. Lee caters for a niche market, especially women. “A lot of women don’t want to buy clothes at an Op Shop or a garage sale but know they can buy quality preloved clothes in the Stone Cottage,” she said. “My shop is full of things for people on the same wavelength as me. “It has a very old-fashioned shop keeper atmosphere.” Lee’s best-sellers are clothes, handbags and shoes, but she stocks a lot more, from interesting knick knacks to beautiful crockery, jewellery and some men’s clothing. People say to Lee, “You have everything in this shop”. With a laugh Lee replies, “But not the kitchen sink…yet!”

Snowy River Historical Society & Science Museum

Within the heritage centre at Berridale Public School lies a museum curated by a very special community organisation committed to preserving the history of the Snowy River Region. An archive of school days, war days, rags and riches stories, rare and unique pieces that brings life to those who shaped the early days of the Snowy Monaro. Complimenting this is the Bill Croziers Science Museum. Bill was a CSIRO Scientist who has donated his life’s work collected throughout his career. Monaro’s spectacular grasslands

undertook a side trip to Top Hut Travelling Stock Reserve to assess the quality of the grassland at that spectacular site, although the Monaro Golden Daisy has never been recorded there. On Sunday, we started at a previously recorded site at Bibbenluke Common. While this site looked truly spectacular, with wildflowers of many species in glorious full-flower, unfortunately no Monaro Golden Daisy plants could be found. I discovered this population in the late 1990s, and then it was quite a healthy one, with more than 20 plants present,

The community group Friends of Grasslands held a Monaro Golden Daisy field trip on the weekend of 17 and 18 November. The main purpose of this was to assess the health of all known populations of the vulnerable Monaro Golden Daisy, Rutidosis leiolepis on the Monaro Plains. Our process involved visiting the sites of all known populations, mapping them, and making an estimate of

each population’s size. The group spent a couple of glorious days in the Monaro grasslands. I led the trip on Sunday, and some of the grasslands I saw were truly spectacular; as good as I’ve seen in my 28 years of studying the grasslands of the Monaro. Those who were present on the Saturday reported similar observations at some of their surveyed sites. The Saturday team surveyed a small patch at Old Cooma Common, and then sites along Dry Plains Rd and Bushrangers Hill Rd near Adaminaby. They

along with a large population of Native Flax, Linum marginale. While the beautiful blue-flowered Native Flax is still present, its numbers are severely reduced, with only three plants seen. The lack of Monaro Golden Daisy and the very much reduced population of Native Flax at Bibbenluke Common shows just how vulnerable the biodiversity of our Natural Temperate Grasslands is. As far as I can ascertain, Bibbenluke Common has been used exclusively for cattle grazing for 150 years or even more. However, within the last 15 years or so, an

entire population of a threatened species has apparently disappeared. The likely causes: a combination of tooheavy grazing, grazing at the wrong time, and a series of severe droughts. The Native Flax population has been subjected to the same pressures and has fared only slightly better! The still spectacular nature of the grassland remnant at Bibbenluke Common serves to highlight the incredible diversity that we have lost elsewhere throughout the region. This is why Natural Temperate Grassland is listed as a critically endangered ecological community.

Bibbenluke Common and a handful of other sites like it across the Monaro point to an untapped tourism potential. Friends of Grasslands see a future when tourists will not just go to Kosciuszko National Park for wildflower walks in the middle of summer; they will also make time throughout the spring seasons in order to ramble in the special wildflower gardens that are the Monaro region’s rare remnant grasslands. Take a trip down memory lane and visit the gold rush and heritage trails in the Tumut region. Adelong, Batlow and Kiandra all have a rich history of gold mining from the 1850s which is ready to be explored.

Adelong The Adelong Gold Rush began in 1852 with the discovery of alluvial gold at upper Adelong. The state heritage listed Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins is a must-see destination. It is one of the most important historic sites that identifies the discovery of gold in southern NSW and is a unique site forming part of an intensive gold mining landscape 1.5km from Adelong. The remarkable stone ruins of the ingenious Reefer ore crushing machine remain for all visitors to view from the platform, or wander through to interpret how reef ore was processed. This mill processed ore from miners from Adelong and the wider district and ceased operation in 1914. Entry is free, but donations are welcome and encouraged. Disability access, bus parking, picnic shelters and public toilets available.

Batlow Batlow’s gold rush began in 1854 when prospectors converged on Reedy Creek. An area known as “Mayday was yielding good returns with claims that gold was being carried out by the bucket. The gold deposits were quickly exhausted and farmers found the area better suited to growing produce, which led to the establishment of many orchards and farms. Within a few years, fruit became a major industry, and in 1923 the first cool stores in NSW were constructed at Batlow.

Kiandra Further afield, Kiandra was also the site of a gold rush. By March 1860, 10,000 prospectors from around the globe were scouring the district in search of gold. Within 18 months the rush had moved on, leaving only a few hundred diggers behind. Although today the town no longer exists, walking one of the historic trails conjures images of how life must have been in such a remote location almost 200 years ago. There are remains of the gold mining days scattered throughout the landscape along with the old Courthouse, historic cemetery and the remains of Yans store.

Tourism is

my Business!

Ian Arnold - Snowy River TyrePower

Whatever you do for a crust right across the Snowy Mountains region you are positively affected by tourism. In fact, last year spending by tourists was worth almost $38,000 for every man, woman and child in our community - more than double anywhere else in New South Wales. A whopping $787 million dollars a year that has a multiplier effect creating jobs and opportunities for all our families. Tourism is everybody's business. To find out more about being part of growing our visitor economy, visit www.snowymountains.com.au

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro made the announcement in Jindabyne, ahead of this year’s race. “Over 3000 cyclists from across Australia and the world will race through some of the most stunning mountain terrain in the country, enjoying a unique experience as close to riding in the famed Tour de France as an amateur cyclist can get,â€? Mr Barilaro

said. “This is the third year we have welcomed L’Étape Australia to the beautiful Snowy Mountains and it has become a popular event with locals and visitors alike, so I am delighted it will be returning once again in 2019. “Next year, we expect more than 5500 visitors to travel to the Snowies for L’Étape Australia, injecting around $2.6 million into the NSW visitor economy. “Not only do world-renowned events like L’Étape Australia provide valuable support to local communities within regional NSW, but they help the NSW Government achieve its goal of reaching

$55 billion in overnight visitor expenditure by 2030. L’Étape Australia is part of a strong calendar of major events in the Snowy Mountains, with Snowtunes Music Festival, the Snowies Mountain Bike Festival and the Australian National Cross Triathlon also driving visitors to the region. L’Étape Australia has been secured for the Snowy Mountains by the NSW Government. For more information on L’Étape Australia, visit www. letapeaustralia.com.
