Running for a safe climate A group of first response emergency service personnel including some from the Victorian fire brigades and police force stopped to catch their breath in Jindabyne en route from Cape York Peninsular to Melbourne on Tuesday, November 17. The runners, many of whom were involved in Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires, were on a mission under the banner “Run for a Safe Climate”, to raise awareness of the fragility of the Australian ecological systems which they were visiting along the way and giving talks at communities and schools. Before making a detour to Charlotte Pass, some of the athletes addressed students at the Snowy Mountains Grammar School. The month-long run, which kicked off from where Captain Cook made landfall at Cooktown, covers

three eastern Australian states, including the length of the Murray River from Tom Groggin Station and then back along the Great Ocean Road, finishes on Melbourne’s St Kilda pier on November 29. The core group of 25 men and women, carries a message stick from the indigenous people in Cooktown. Each runner will run a distance of 300 kilometres over the entire length of the journey. Acting Police Sergeant Matthew Astill said “One person alone cannot complete the 6,000 kilometre journey in one month, but 25 people can achieve the journey as a group, as is the case for a safe climate – one person cannot make a difference but collectively a safer climate can be achieved.” You are invited to seek more information on this initiative by going on line at www. runforasafeclimate.

Going hairy for a reason, from left, Liam McCoy, Paul Thompson, Rob Tapply, Mark Hartas, Steve Hopkin and Adam Lee. Members of Cooma’s emergency services have been taking part in the Movember challenge, with particular emphasis on the friendly rivalry between the police and ambulance services. The police and ambos set up a barbeque at Coffey’s Hotel on Saturday to gain some attention for their cause, and raise a few extra funds. People have been donating through the Movember website, and at this stage Cooma ambo Liam McCoy is the leading fundraiser for the entire ambulance service. Movember is an initiative that is designed to raise money and awarness about men’s health, particularly depression and prostate cancer. By growing a moustache for one month, the ‘Mo Bros’ become walking billboards and encourage men to think about their health.

“It’s all about raising awarness, and raising a few dollars and having a bit of fun,” Mo Bro Paul Thompson from the Ambulance service said. Movember started in Australia in 2003, and in the first year 30 members took part. Last year, 125,000 people took part in the event in Australia alone and over $60million have been raised for the event. The Movember phenomenon has since spread to the UK, Canada, The US and New Zealand, and has been a very effective means of raising awareness about men’s health. With five days to go, the moustaches on the Mo Bros from our local police and ambos are looking healthy, and people can still donate to either an individual or group cause by going to the Movember website.

Police report Over the weekend the Celebration of Motorcycles was held in Bombala. Police are full of praise for the organisers and patrons as they made no arrests. There were only a couple of people who failed to quit a licensed premises. Race day The Adaminaby races were also held and again there were no arrests made, only a couple of move on orders issued. RBT A 37-year-old Victorian male was charged with mid range drink driving at Bombala on Saturday after being pulled over for a random breath test. He will appear in Bombala Local court at a later date. Offensive behaviour On Saturday at 10.20pm a 49-year-old Cooma male was issued with a court attendance notice and criminal infringement notice for offensive conduct

for urinating in Sharp Street. Cooma police said this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. Traffic accident A minor accident occurred at the intersection of Soho and Commissioner Streets on Friday at 9am. An 84-year-old male from Cooma failed to give way to a vehicle traveling along Commissioner Street. No injuries were reported. Wet roads At 10.30am on Saturday a 32-year-old person was traveling along the Alpine Way past Thredbo Village when their vehicle slid on the wet, rainy road and they collided with a tree, narrowly avoiding going over the edge. They were given a lift back to Jindabyne police station by a passing vehicle and were treated at the police station by ambulance officers for minor injuries.

Bushwalkers rescued due to EPIRB use Snowy Hydro SouthCare rescued a group of bushwalkers north of Jindabyne last Tuesday evening. One of the bushwalkers was suffering a cardiac condition and was transferred to The Canberra Hospital once retrieved. The group had with them the 406 MHz Emergency Beacon which is now the standard EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Response Beacon) for use within Australia. It is encouraged that all bushwalkers have with them an emergency beacon and success was shown overnight with the patient being found and retrieved

within 45 minutes, potentially saving his life. The Emergency Beacon set of a satellite call which notified the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) Rescue Coordination Centre who in turn notified the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Rescue Helicopter which was able to find the group using the GPS coordinates given from the beacon. “Searching for people in rough and heavy bush land can be a challenge, the emergency beacons make it much faster to locate people in distress and if a member of your party has injuries, you can see the benefits of being able to locate you immediately and transport you

Cooma Dance Co. presents....

for further medical treatment you may require CEO Steve Gregory said. “AMSA advises that old analogue beacons can no longer be used as distress alerting devices and as of February 1, it will be illegal to operate a 121.5 MHz beacon. They should be removed from the environment immediately to ensure they do not block out true distress alerts and take valuable resources away from real life and death situations. Mr. Gregory added.

Snowy excluded from assets sale The exclusion of Snowy Hydro P/L from bidding on NSW electrical assets has prompted a mixed response from the community. The NSW Opposition is claiming excluding Snowy Hydro from the tendering process will ultimately lead to job cuts in the region, but the State Government is defending the decision. Cooma-Monaro Shire Mayor Vin Good also has concerns with State Government’s decision to keep Snowy Hydro’s bid out of the State’s electricity assets sale. Cooma-Monaro Shire Council’s Mayor, Mr Vin Good has two concerns at the NSW State Governments decision. to limit competition by refusing to consider Sno “Firstly, I would have thought that it would be in the State’s interest to have as many competitors bidding to get the price up as high as possible”. “It is understood that the State Government’s concern with its recent power privatisation process is that a perceived government owned entity such as Snowy Hydro’s involvement would frighten off private sector buyers such as AGL Energy, Origin Energy and others”. “Although I do not support privatisation, it is my understanding that Snowy Hydro is reasonably well geared and fully self funded and operates on commercial financial disciplines outside any controls or guarantees by the State and Federal Governments as shareholders. Everyone in the power-energy industry knows that”. “My experience, as former Commissioner of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Authority, is that recent utilities sales in Australia suggest that the involvement of state-owned or shareholder companies have not deterred private interests in the past. Certainly, the presence of state owned entities in utilities sales have not scared off AGL

Energy, Origin Energy or Singapore Power, just to mention a few private companies, which have bought into a range of Australian electricity assets despite governments interest in the past”, Mayor Good said. “Secondly, I take the position that to exclude Snowy Hydro from the bidding process may jeopardise growing their business in its own market which may have an adverse effect on the benefits and business generated within Cooma and the region”. “Snowy Hydro is the largest employer in Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Region and has close ties with this Council, the business and community sector. To this end, I urge the NSW State Government to re-consider its decision and accept Snowy Hydro’s expression of interest, which it will fund from its own balance sheet. This will enhance competition in the bidding process, further Snowy Hydro’s commercial business in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and provide more competition in the NEM in the future”. A spokesman for NSW Treasurer Eric Roozendaal has confirmed the NSW Government would not consider any Expression of Interest lodged by Snowy Hydro Corporation to participate in the Government’s forthcoming energy reform transactions. “The NSW Government owns 58 percent of Snowy Hydro and it is inconsistent with our objective to withdraw from the competitive aspects of the electricity market to consider an Expression of Interest from Snowy,” the spokesman said. (The Monaro Post has tried to get a comment from Snowy Hydro’s managing director, Terry Charlton, but none has been forthcoming).

Boyce Chartered Accountants has announced Cooma local, Jodie Dobbie as the 2009 winner of the firm’s employee of the year award. The award, named in memory of Tony Quirk a director of the firm who died prematurely in 2005 at the age of 34, is presented annually to recognise the extraordinary contribution made by a member of the firm. The criteria for judging includes demonstrating a genuine care for clients, contributing to the social fabric of the firm, acting in a professional manner, living the firm’s values on a daily basis and meeting the performance expectations of the role. Boyce has six offices throughout the state and a team of more than 140 staff. Award finalists from each of the Boyce offices are selected by their peers and are then required to submit a submission to the panel of judges, chaired by the Independent Boyce Chairman, John Gordon. This year the judging panel, although faced with a daunting task due to the high quality of the candidates, unanimously agreed that Jodie Dobbie was the stand-out finalist. Jodie has been with Boyce Cooma since July 2000 and is a Manager supporting Boyce Director, Kathy Kelly as well as managing her own client base. Both technically and professionally Jodie exceeds the performance expectations of her role. “She has the skills and she delivers,” Kathy said. “It is however, in the care that Jodie displays towards clients and fellow team members where she truly shines. Jodie lives the Boyce philosophy that every client is important and all need to be treated with the same respect and concern”, Kathy said. “Jodie goes out of her way to fit in with client time-frames and takes a proactive approach, thinking ahead of any issues that might impact clients.” This is the second year that the Cooma team has nominated Jodie as the finalist for their office—which in itself is an indication of the esteem in which she is held. Kathy nominates Jodie’s ability to listen as one

of her most valued traits explaining that Jodie is sought out by her fellow team members for advice and guidance, both professionally and personally. “She is a positive person with a friendly nature, who takes pressure in her stride and keeps smiling,” Kathy said. “It is for all the above reasons and more that Jodie is indeed a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.” The award is a practical way to honour the memory of Tony Quirk, who was at 27, the youngest director ever appointed to the firm Kathy, explained. “We wanted to use the example of what Tony had achieved to inspire our team.” Jodie was presented with a perpetual trophy and will receive a travel voucher which she will use to help fund a trip for herself and her husband to New Zealand.

Australia’s biggest drink-driving operation has begun as police nationally have revealed an estimated quarter of all drivers involved in fatal crashes have had a blood alcohol reading above 0.05. Police are expecting to conduct more than 500,000 breath tests during the three weeks of Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers). Operation RAID runs from 0001 hours Friday November 30 11.30pm Saturday December 12. During Operation RAID last year, police throughout Australia conducted some 569,000 breath tests in the three weeks of RAID, and charged more that 4000 motorists with drink or drug driving offences. More than 20,000 motorists were also reported for speeding and restraint offences nationally. National Operation RAID spokesperson, NSW Police Force Deputy Commissioner Dave Owens, said what began as a Murray River based initiative has grown into Australia’s largest and longest

drink-driving and drug-impaired driving operation. “This really does mean that no matter where you are and how much you have had to drink or what drugs you have taken we will find you. There truly is nowhere to hide,” Deputy Commissioner Owens said. “Alcohol continues to be one of the biggest killers on our roads. “An estimated quarter of all drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes across the country have a blood alcohol content above 0.05. “This is a staggering and frightening figure when you consider the number of people in this country who would have grown up with random breath testing as a part of their lives.” By October 31, 143 people died on roads across the country last month – this is a 13.5 per cent increase over the October 2008 figure. There have been 1282 road deaths in 2009 to the end of October - this is a 7.6 per cent increase over the same 10 month period in 2008.

On November 13, Jindabyne Police issued a $550 infringement to an 18-year-old Jindabyne man for supplying alcohol to a minor. Jindabyne Police would like to remind the community that it is an offence to purchase for, or supply alcohol to, a person under the age of 18. It is also an offence for a person under the age of 18 to be in the possession of or consume alcohol. With the summer holidays fast approaching Jindabyne Police would like to remind parents and juvenilles of their responsibilities with respect to the consumption and supply of alcohol. Basically if you supply ANY alcohol to anyone under the age of 18 and that person is detected

by police and the minor is not in the immediate control of a responsible person - police will decide who that is and it cannot be the juvenille’s mate for example - the person who supplied the alcohol and the minor will be dealt with accordingly. Many of the incidents police are called to or investigate involve people under the inluence of alcohol. What may seem a good idea at the time can have serious repercussions both financially and personally if people make a rash decision or take a rash action whilst under the influence of alcohol. Do not let it happen to you or someone close to you.

Tip closed due to asbestos A controversial waste transfer facility, the subject of recent heated debate between Snowy River Shire and ratepayers, has been closed indefinitely because of the illegal dumping of asbestos on the site. At last Tuesday’s council meeting, council was to vote on a staff recommendaton to close the Eucumbene waste facility as of December 31. Ratepayers have been protesting the proposed closures of the tip and had prepared a report for council, illustrating how the facility could be kept open. However, since that meeting, council has announced the facility has been closed because of asbestos contamination. On Thursday November 19, illegal dumping of possible asbestos contaminated rubbish at Eucumbene Waste Transfer Facility was reported to council’s senior waste management officer. Council’s Jindabyne landfill supervisor was instructed to investigate the reprt and provide photographic evidence. Further investigation of the site was conducted on Friday at approximately 12.30pm by council’s senior waste management officer and manager of environmental health. Based on preliminary investigation and a report

from the manager of environmental health, it has been confirmed Eucumbene Waste Transfer Facility was contaminated with asbestos. Department of Environment and Climate Change and Water (DECCW), Snowy Hydro and NSW Health have been informed of the confirmation of contamination at the site. Council’s General Manager Joe Vescio has advised “Due to Public Health and Occupational Health and Safety concerns, Eucumbene Waste Transfer Facility will close effective immediately and will remain closed until such time as it is deemed to be completely free from Asbestos contamination”. A notice advising of the contamination and closure of the site will be placed at the transfer facility and the public are advised to refrain from using the site until further notice. Council will commence the decontamination process as soon as possible and in consultation with the relevant authorities. For any further information please contact Council’s Director of Engineering & Operations, Mr Suneil Adhikari or Sr. Waste Management Officer Mr Sean Crowe by telephone on (02) 6451 1195.

Resident objects to proposed subdivision Editor,

A number of Cooma residents have received notification from the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council of a development application, submitted by the “Highland Engineering” Pty Ltd (dated 3/11/09). Proposed development for a 120 lot subdivision Property description 167 Yallakool Road, Coma NSW 2630 Lot 1/DP845442 LOT 2/DP845442 Application number 46/10/DA The notificaton requests a voluntary letter of support or objection to the above application. To the best of my knowledge, only some residents received this letter. I intend to oibject to the proposal for the following reasons:

a. Water, the Murrumbidgee is struggling to meet the need for water now; b. There appears to be no provision for green space; c. there appears to be no provision for a children’s playground; d. is the existing sewerage infrastructire sufficient to handle 120 more households; e. what about transport and other facilities?; f. I have roughly counted the vacant blocks in Cooma and they number approximately 50; g. there are already approximately 200 houses for sale at the moment; h. do we need more vacant land?; i. where are the people (approx

500) coming from and where are they going to be employed?; j. what information is being given to the development companies that we the citizens and ratepayers of the shire are not privy to? The full application may be inspected at council‘s environmental services division at 81 Commissioner Street, Cooma during normal business hours. I suggest that if you have not received this notification that you inspect the plan at the above address.

Garnock appointed Boyce director The Directors of leading professional services firm Boyce Chartered Accountants are pleased to announce the appointment of Lindsay Garnock as a Director of the firm’s financial advisory division, Boyce Financial Services (BFS). Mr Garnock is a Certified Financial Planner and has been the Senior Financial Advisor with BFS since inception. He initially joined Boyce in January 2000 as an Accountant in the firm’s Cooma office before pursuing a career in financial planning. Mr Garnock has more than eight years experience in the financial advisory field and is a member of the Financial Planning Association of Australia. BFS was established in August 2008 to offer a comprehensive range of financial services and advice to maximise the wealth potential of individuals, families and businesses. Boyce Managing Director, Bernard Kennedy, said that the business had progressed ahead of expectations despite being established at the height of the global financial crisis. “Lindsay has been instrumental in this success,” said Mr Kennedy. “He is an outstanding financial advisor who works hard to understand the needs of clients to help them achieve their wealth creation goals.” Mr Kennedy said that Lindsay’s appointment as a Director is in recognition not just of his achievements to date, but also his drive and enthusiasm to make BFS the pre-eminent financial advisory

business in regional Australia. BFS recently introduced a “fee for service” model in a proactive approach to address concerns in the industry regarding financial advisory remuneration structures. “We have moved away from the more common financial services model where fees are linked to the value of funds invested or advisors are remunerated by commissions,” said Mr Garnock. “This removes the potential for fee increases due simply to market movements and any possible conflict of interest for advisors is significantly reduced.” Mr Garnock is based in the BFS head office in Wagga Wagga and is supported by a team of advisors from across the Boyce office network including Phil Alchin (Moree), Luke Carr (Dubbo), Richard Cummins (Orange), Peter King (Goulburn) and Elizabeth Timmins (Cooma). “I am delighted to be appointed as a Director of BFS and together with my experienced advisory team will continue to work hard to assist rural and regional Australians to maximise their wealth,” Mr Garnock said. Lindsay Garnock, Phil Alchin, Luke Carr, Richard Cummins, Peter King, Elizabeth Timmins and Boyce Financial Services Pty Limited are Authorised Representatives of Lonsdale Financial Group Limited, ABN 76 006 637 225, AFS Licence No. 246934.

growing obsession with technology and gadgetry, according to new research from NRMA Insurance. The average NSW household has 9.4 ‘screens’ – which includes TVs, computers, MP3 players or mobile phones. The insurer also revealed: • 79 per cent of NSW households have one or more iPods (or another MP3 player); • One TV is no longer enough – 80 per cent have two or more TVs; • 99 per cent have a computer or laptop; and • Almost half (49 per cent) have three mobile phones or more. NRMA Insurance spokesperson Emily Gatt said our fascination with technology was changing our lifestyles. “In 2009, the average NSW household is not all that far removed from an appliance showroom floor,” said Ms Gatt. “Most households have plenty of choices when it comes to home entertainment – and our obsession really doesn’t seem to have slowed too much because of the global financial

The research also revealed that two in three survey respondents spend more than three hours a day using technology when at home. “This represents a dramatic shift in how we spend our time at home, when compared to as little as a decade ago. We are seemingly leading busier lifestyles with less home time, but somehow in all of this, our technology obsession is growing.” Ms Gatt said the time spent on technology could be affecting our relationships with friends, family and our engagement within our community. “In any one house in NSW, different household members could be on different screens in different rooms of the home for hours on end. “We are encouraging people to find balance in their lives. Sure, technology is meant to be making our lives easier and more enjoyable, but finding time for traditional social interaction is also important.” For more information on NRMA Insurance, visit www.nrma.com.au

Liv 4 for your Christmas gifts Shopping for Christmas gifts could not be easier than a trip to Mitre 10 Cooma’s Liv4 Home and Kitchen section. Liv4’s well-stocked giftware, kitchenware and lifestyle selection have been increased with plenty to choose from for Christmas gifts or entertaining. Liv4’s manager Carolyn Hayden, with assistants Kelly Reed and Lee Parkinson, has selected an extensive range of Christmas goodies to suit all tastes and budgets. With the end of the school year looming, Liv4 has some great ideas for gifts for teachers, such as Maxwell and Williams’ range of mugs, which benefit breast cancer research. There is also a range of drink bottles and cooler bottles for the kids. With the festive season only weeks away, Liv4 offers a great range of glassware which would look great of the Christmas table or would make a good gift. Boxes of glass are available from only $24.95 per box. Acrylic wine glasses are also available and these would be ideal for anyone heading for Cooma races on December 5. Other gift ideas include salad bowls and servers, ($20) boxed biscuits and chocolates (also good for teachers’ gifts), aprons and a wide range of crockery, especially designed for Christmas. Liv4 also has a good range of wine glasses for all occasions. For the Christmas cooks, there is a selection

of cookie cutters, pudding bowls, and a range of disposal baking containers – simply bake the cake and the container serves as an attractive gift-wrap as well. A new range available this year is Maxwell & Williams ‘Microstoven’, bake ware which is microwave, oven and stovetop proof and can also be used in the freezer. Washing up is easy in a dishwasher. Liv 4 has a popular range of cups and mugs featuring Australiana and Carolyn says, these have proven very popular to send overseas as gifts, for any occasion. The kitchenware includes just about any tool or gadget designed to make life easier for the cook, from peelers to utility knives to spatulas, etc. There are also cookbooks and recipe journals Another clever idea for a stocking filler is the range of string bags – in a variety of great colours, which sell for $2.95 or $3.50, depending on size. Liv4 also offers a range of quality bath towels, which can be complimented by gift wrapped soaps and choice of candles and other scented requisites for the bathroom. A shipment of fly streamers has also just arrived and these are either bamboo or string, just the thing to keep flies out. For a more decorative idea, see Liv4’s range of figurines by WillowTree and their selection of photo frames – all good gift ideas. Liv4 Home & Kitchen is open seven days a week.

Avoiding Christmas prangs

NOT SURE WHAT TO BUY?

NRMA Insurance is urging last minute Christmas shoppers to be patient especially in and around shopping centres, after it revealed December is the worst month for parking prangs.* In 2007 the insurer recorded more than 2,500 parking bingles in December alone – about 80 a day. NRMA Insurance spokesperson John Hallal said the majority of parking prangs occur in busy shopping areas where a high volume of cars regularly arrive and exit car parks. “With so many of us in shopping centres picking up last minute Christmas presents, we are encouraging drivers to be both patient and focussed when entering and exiting car parks” said Mr Hallal. “Around 16 per cent of all car collisions are the result of parking, and those annoying little dents, scratches and bumps cost on average around $1600 in repair costs.” “Typical parking collisions include hitting other cars, trolleys, railings, walls and pylons and many are caused when reversing” he added. Mr Hallal said adhering to the road rules of the shopping precincts, was particularly important in avoiding a parking bingle. “This may well be the busiest time of the year at shopping centres, so drivers should allow for extra time and be considerate of other drivers” he added.

NRMA Insurance offers the following tips to driver: Be alert at all times and watch out for other drivers who may disobey traffic signals, such as one-way signs, or park incorrectly, creating collision hazards If you are reversing in a car park, go slow and don’t just rely on your mirrors – look over your shoulder too New car technology such as cameras and reverse sensors can assist drivers when they are reversing, however drivers still need to be aware of what is around them Do your bit to keep the car park free of obstacles and hazards by returning shopping trolleys to their bay Use indicators every time you make a turn Don’t pull out around cars that are waiting to drive into a parking space – be patient and give them room to move If you are involved in a collision and hit another parked vehicle, do the right thing and leave a note with your details – nobody wants to come back to their car and find it damaged with no details left If you witness a collision, pass on any information you have to the innocent party * Based on NRMA Insurance comprehensive motor insurance claims 2007/08

demand on all our services”, John Picot, CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, said today. “Families who have been struggling during the year often find the demands of Christmas unbearable. For many of the families who turn to Vinnies, finding themselves unable to cope at this

special time of year can be the final straw.” In aiming to raise almost $2 million dollars in NSW, Vinnies is asking Australians to consider what it would be like if you took the ‘merry’ out of Christmas. “We are challenging them to think about how they would feel if there was no Christmas dinner

to share with loved ones, no gifts to light up the faces of young children or, worse, if they did not even know where they would be sleeping on Christmas night,” Mr Picot said. “We ask Australians to join with us in ensuring all children feel that magic and enjoy both the sweet anticipation and the memories

Christmas cooking ideas Fruit Cake Ingredients

3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1 1/2 cups butter 1 3/4 cups superfine sugar 6 eggs 2 cups raisins 2 cups golden raisins 4 cups dried currants 1 cup candied cherries 3/4 cup chopped almonds 2 tablespoons brandy Method Grease an 20cm (8 inch) cake tin and line it with parchment paper. Set aside. In a large bowl, combine the flour, mixed spice, cinnamon and lemon zest. Stir with a whisk until blended. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing until each one is blended in. Stir in the dry ingredients just until moistened, then fold in the raisins, golden raisins, currants, cherries and almonds. Spoon into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Make a slight impression in the center with the back of a spoon so the cake will turn out level. Cover and leave in a cool place overnight. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Place the cake tin on a baking sheet. Bake for 4 hours in the preheated oven. When the cake is done, a skewer inserted into the center should come out clean. Cool in the pan for 1 hour, then turn out onto a wire rack and remove the paper. When completely cool, poke with a skewer every inch or so, and spoon brandy into the holes. Wrap in waxed paper and store in a cool place until serving.

MEN’S HEALTH CHECKS AT JINDABYNE 10am on Wednesday 16 December Mark the date! Uniting Church site, 19 Gippsland Street Monaro Rural Health Service is supporting the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners to conduct men’s health checks at the Jindabyne Men’s Shed on Wednesday 16 December. This is happening as part of the M5 Project, a national campaign to raise male awareness about the disproportionate health risk men sustain, and how easy this can be to address. This follows a very successful event at the Windale Shed, in Charlestown NSW on 24 September. Around 40 men turned up from both Windale Shed and a nearby shed in Swansea and due to extensive media coverage from newspaper and radio a handful of extra men were attracted too.

BARON AND COMMISSIONER STREETS INTERSECTION

The College provides the health check pro-formas that men complete during the check plus a letter they could take with the completed check to their GP. The check covers basic assessments such as height, waist and weight (BMI), blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, family history.

Work has commenced on the installation of the roundabout at the intersection of Baron and Commissioner Streets in Cooma. Trenching has begun in preparation for the construction and realignment of the 250mm diameter watermain that traverses through the intersection.

For more information on the M5 Project check the website at http://www.m5project.com.au/menshealth

The intersection is closed to traffic and work is expected to be completed by 18 December.

Contact Health Communities Manager, Janine Robertson on (02) 6455 3311.

YALLAMBEE CATCH-UP Residents enjoyed immensely the Snowy Mountains Grammar School students’ visit on Remembrance Day as well as the letters the students have written to residents and staff since. Interaction between the elderly and the young is always very special and in this case doubly so because everyone had such a good time. The best news is that this will now become an annual visit – it’s already marked on our calendar for 2010. Residents enjoyed an afternoon outing and tea at the Snowy Hydro Cafe recently, while events are already planned for the lead-up to Christmas. On 20 November residents had the choice of visiting Berridale for lunch at the Winery followed by Maggie’s Concert or an outing to Nimmitabel for the Nimmitabel CWA Christmas Party. 28 November will be the residents’ own Christmas Party and all families and friends are invited to attend to make this a truly festive event. The ever popular Dave will provide entertainment. 3 December is the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party at the Ex-services Club and 10 December will see a visit from Cooma North Preschool to sing Christmas Carols with everyone.

The lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted.

ENJOYABLE TRIP It was great to hear Christina and her daughter Esther Laub had such an intersting trip overseas recently. Christina tells me they flew to San Francisco for five days then on to Vancouver, ten days on the Rocky Mountains, ten days in Quebec Country and an amazing three day visit to Prince Edward Island. They both loved The Anne of Green Gables country and theit last 24 hours was in New York where they saw a live presentation of Phamtom of the Opera. Centre, Vale Street, Cooma and will cover many ideas for future events. You are welcome to have your say. Also an invite to attend a talk on Medieval English and Culture to be given by Naomi Pereboeff on Wednesday December 2 at 6pm at the same venue.

Many festivities have already begun for the Christmas season. Last Friday the University of the Third Age held their Christmas thank you party to all the volunteer tutors and committee. Fourteen guests enjoyed themselves at a luncheon at Dodds Hotel which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Jim Hart thanked President Lyn Last, for all her hard work and amongst those enjoying themselves were Michael Stubbs-Rice and Mrs Stubbs-Rice, Sue Clayton, Jackie Fox, Sandra Venola, Elizabeth Laught, Brenda Miles and Vera Beckmann. Also last Sunday there was a Christmas three course luncheon out at Carmen Henkel’s property and also a welcome back from her recent overseas trip. A beautifully decorated table in red and black colours adorned with crystal glasses set the scene for a fun filled Christmas luncheon enjoyed by Marlies Kappel, Robin Mould, Leonie Snell and several other guests.

HOSPITAL KIOSK When visiting the Cooma Hospital please make time to see the new line of hand made gifts by volunteer Marilyn Watson which I feel would cheer any patient. They are available in the kiosk and well worth seeing.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst If you really want to appreciate just how dexterous you are when all your digits are functioning at full capacity, just slam a couple of them in a sliding door. Trust me, this will bring the message home to you in no uncertain terms and you’ll never take fingers and things for granted ever again. How do I know this? Well, having slammed a sliding door on the two middle fingers of my right hand was a start but what really brought it all home to me was the ring-pull on the dog food, having to manipulate the can opener on the cat food and the struggle with the lid on the coffee jar. Typing this column with only six fingers instead of the usual eight is also a trial (never spelt fingers as “fomg3rs before in my entire life!) but nothing compared to accidently hitting a key with one of the squished digits which can bring on a spate of major profanity (and I didn’t know I could swear so well!). Even worse though is that the squish took in the nails. Now a standard broken nail can bring on a bout of PND (Post Nail Depression) in most females but squished ones that look like they may eventually part company altogether with the fingers in question can lead to a serious case of PNP (Post Nail Psychosis) and that’s the bad one. Sufferers have been known to go to ridiculous lengths to hide the cause, like stay home in a darkened room or travel hand in glove/pocket/bandage/something until the nail grows back. I’m not quite that neurotic though. If mine get loose and drop off I’ll just use a couple of bandaids and think happy thoughts. I know I can do this but trying to do a lot of other things at the moment is not having a very positive effect on my emotional state and the expletives just keep slipping out when I least expect them, like when I forget and do something that presses on the squished parts and I have to peel myself off the ceiling as a result. %&*@#!!! No doubt my condition is going to rule out things like the vacuuming, dusting, sweeping and quite possibly a number of other domestic activities for a day or so at least, possibly longer if I can manage to look pathetic enough, so there is an upside, and who’s going to know I’m milking it for all it’s worth if I don’t tell anyone! Hey, maybe I actually broke one of these babies! Now that’s got to be worth a week on the couch with a good book. I could hold it in my left hand...

New rules for learner drivers The pressure on parents to teach their children to drive is about to be eased under new rules announced by the Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport, David Borger. Mr Borger said that from December 19, one hour of structured driving tuition by a professional driving instructor will count for three hours in the learner driver logbook. “These changes to the NSW Graduated Licensing Scheme for novice drivers will be capped at a maximum of 10 one-hour lessons counting as 30 logbook hours. “This means learner drivers will still need to complete 120 hours of driving in total, but 30 hours will be recorded in the driver’s log book for 10 hours of professional driving instruction.” Mr Borger said. “Also from December 19, learners who are 25 years old or over will no longer be required to complete a log book.

“This is a sensible approach as research shows older learner drivers are more inclined to drive safely than younger novice drivers. For many of these older learner drivers, the 120 hour logbook requirement is a significant barrier that impacts on their work and family commitments. “ Mr Borger said. NRMA Group CEO Tony Stuart congratulated the NSW Government on today’s announcement and said it was a win for learner drivers and their parents. “The NSW Government has obviously listened to the concerns of parents of learner drivers and responded accordingly,” Mr Stuart said. “The NRMA is pleased the NSW Government has struck a happy medium between making sure learner drivers get the best breadth of driver training experience possible while also providing some relief to parents who had to spend 120 hours in the

car with their children. “These changes will help ensure learner drivers qualify for their Ps as better drivers and will help parents too.” Mr Borger said that under the changes, lessons are not compulsory. However the program will act as an incentive for learner drivers to obtain professional lessons while they are learning to drive. “In the early stages of driving solo, many novice drivers crash through inexperience. “We know from research there are road safety benefits for learner drivers obtaining as much practice as possible in a wide range of driving situations and conditions, Mr Borger said. “Parents and non-professional supervising drivers play a vital role in helping learners get experience but professional driving tuition also plays an important role.

“In particular, research shows that lessons are more likely to be of benefit if they are structured, focusing on safe driving practices. “These changes will help learner drivers as well as mums and dads and other supervisors who may find it difficult to reach the 120 hour target,” Mr Borger said. Jeff McDougall, President of the Australian Driver Trainers Association (ADTA) is working with the driving instruction industry to roll out a structured program for NSW learner drivers. “The program focuses on hazard perception and safe driving and will be of particular benefit in the early stages of the learner licence. “It will be used to develop a partnership with parents, thereby supporting learner drivers and encouraging much needed practice,” Mr Borger said.

Grassroots

IR powers transferred As of January 1, 2011 NSW State Awards will no longer exist: a change for the better according to the NSW Farmers’ Association. NSW Farmers’ Industrial Association Spokesperson Graham Morphett says half a million workers employed by small businesses in NSW will instead be covered by national workplace laws for the first time. “This is a significant change for farmers and rural business as it removes antiquated State differences and reduces the confusion associated with determining which award covers workers” Mr Morphett said. “We have been heavily involved in this process on behalf of Members across all industries, successfully maintaining the Pastoral Awards flexible hours of work and are now focusing on the unfavourable provisions within the drafts of the Horticulture Award 2010” he said. “We have made numerous submissions, in conjunction with the National Farmers’ Federation, to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and Minister for Employment, Education and Workplace Relations, Julia Gillard,”

he said. Under the change from State to Commonwealth Industrial Relations laws, all unincorporated employers not currently covered by the Pastoral Award in NSW will become covered by Modern Industrial Awards, as administered by Fair Work Australia from January 1, 2011. The Association wishes to highlight that Members who employ under the Federal Pastoral Industry Award will be covered by the Pastoral Award 2010 from January 1, 2010. “The Association will be working hard to ensure all workers and employers understand what these changes will mean, and we have in fact already been heavily involved in the Fair Work Education and Information Programme,” he said. “The Association provides extensive assistance to its IR Essentials Members, and we will of course continue our vital lobbying to ensure Members are adequately supported and safeguarded,” Mr Morphett concluded. For information about upcoming Fair Work Act seminars call the Member Service Centre on 1300 794 000.

Dalgety Dog trial results The Snowy River Festival saw dog trial competitions and as well as a working dog auction this year. The auction had a catalogue of 19 entries, ranging from well-trained dogs to younger, started dogs about six to nine months old. A demostration of their working ability preceded the auction, with 32 registered bidders buying to a top price of $2650 for lot 4, a 22-monthold Kelpie, showing good style and a calm touch on his stock in the yards and paddock. Other sales were $2000, $1850, $1650 and younger dogs sold from between $88 and $300. There were five lots passed in. A big crowd enjoyed both events in warm weather and a friendly

atmosphere. The results of the yard dog trials were: Novice Trial: (Judge Alan Rutter) 1. Chris Stapleton – Katie, 199pts; 2. Chris Stapleton, Cougar, 191pts, Chris Stapleton, Chance, 187pts, 4. Steve Sellars, Doc, 186pts. Open trial: (judge Neville King) 1. Chris Stapleton, Reef, 190pts; 2. Larry Wallace, Roo, 188pts, 3. Alan Rutter, Ben, 187pts, 4. Alan Rutter, Al, 185pts; 5. Chris Stapleton.

RFS cadets graduate

Rural Fire Service cadets at Bombala High School graduated recently and were congratulated by the Minister for Emergency services and Member for Monaro, Steve Whan.

New Minister welcomed The NSW Farmers’ Association has welcomed Tony Kelly as the new Minister for Primary Industries. NSW Farmers’ Association President Charles Armstrong says the Association will continue to maintain close links with the Government and its relevant Ministers to ensure effective representation for the people of NSW. “We have worked closely with Minister Kelly in the past as the Minister for Lands, and we welcome him to the Primary Industries portfolio, and look forward to meeting with him at the earliest convenience. “Our role is closely linked to that of the Government of the day, and particularly the

Minister, as we are continually trying to ensure the best decisions are made for our Members. “As the largest representative body for farmers in NSW, we are ideally placed to provide feedback and resources to the Minister and his department. “We’d also like to take this opportunity to farewell Ian Macdonald from the portfolio, and thank him for his years of service. “Ian Macdonald has been a strong advocate for the agricultural industry, and we have had the pleasure of working with him for many years. “While debate has on occasion been robust, I am sure he would agree that it has been a fruitful working relationship for the rural people of NSW,” Mr Armstrong concluded.

Monaro Wool Services

Pictured at Monaro Wool Services at Polo Flat are Cooma manager Ben Litchfield, Peter Gersak, Lou Moore and Shute Bell’s Managing Director Robert Ryan.

Monaro Wool Services are undergoing some positive movements in their business and their long relationship with Shute Bell Badgery Lumby has a lot to do with it. Shute Bell Badgery Lumby is one of the oldest and most recognised and respected company names in rural Australia. The company began operating in 1906, trading under the names of Schute Bell Badgery Lumby, Schute Bell Queensland, Wool Auctions of Australia, Goddard Wool Marketing and Monaro Wool Services. The company has an unrivalled reputation as a personalised and professional Wool Broker and Stock and Station Agent. Shute Bell also offers a professional and personalised service in Wool, Livestock, Property, Finance and Insurance.Having maintained a relationship with Monaro Wool Services for over 100 years, Cooma manager Ben Litchfield was happy to advise of Shute Bell’s reactivation of older branches across the Monaro, especially the investment in the purchasing of the Monaro Wool Services building at Polo Flat.

The purchasing of the building has demonstrated the commitment Shute Bell has in the Monaro as well as demonstrating their continuous commitment to their current clients and potential clients ensuring the stability of this relationship and the wool industry itself. ‘Although we are moving on to a new phase, fundamentally the ethos of the business will remain the same, and that is to continue to provide the advice and customer service to all our clients,’ Ben Litchfield said. Who better to understand the industry than Ben, who began his career at the tender age of 17 and has never worked in any other industry. Shute Bell’s Managing Director Robert Ryan said that the business relationship is about extending the profile of the Monaro and attracting a strong wool investment. Strangely enough, the Sydney office has a stronger turn over than its affiliated branches as the demand for Australian wool stems highly from China, Italy and India. These committed wool brokers work closely with the man on the land and pride themselves on their industry methods that are uniquely Australian.

Nadia Efstathiadis from Sahara Bellydance was at Cooma North Preschool last week to take the children through a range of different belly dancing moves and get them involved in something different. The kids had a great time and were very involved with the dancing, weaving and jumping their way around the room. Nadia has been belly dancing since she was a teenager, and runs classes on Saturdays at Cooma Public School, so it was a very fun occasion for everybody in attendance.

Why we need a bowling centre Athletes set 64 PBs The Cooma Indoor Bowling Centre Committee was formed to look into proposals of 2 types of Indoor Bowling Centres. One being the American AMF Ten Pin bowling and the other the European Kegel 9 Pin Bowling. Why does Cooma need an Indoor Bowling centre? 1. The only place for families to go for a family entertainment, is either the movies or a Restaurant/club. 2. Apparently the crime rate in Cooma is on the increase. Why? Maybe because there’s no entertainment for our youth. 3. If you’re not very sporty, there are very little activities for our youth to participate in. 4. With our extreme weather conditions an Indoor Bowling Centre gives you all year round enjoyment. Mr Heinz Gress who is the Managing Director of Kegel Bowling Centre at Coffs Harbour came down to present Kegel Bowling which is a favourite over in Europe. It is practically

the same setup as ten pin but played with a 30 game software package. This enables the games to be played by 5 year olds to 95 year olds as the balls are smaller and the lanes aren’t slippery. No necessity to use bowling shoes either. We also had quote and a manual presentation from AMF Ten Pin Bowling. It seemed AMF were more expensive to set up and maintain. The meeting concluded that Kegel Bowling using the Vollmer Bowling Equipment was a cost effective way to go. The Committee will now draw up a Business Plan, locate a building large enough to accommodate the centre or use plans already drawn up by Roger Vandersteegan to have it built. We will be asking for Investors, Community Groups to join in and Government funding. Also fundraising to raise awareness of how important it is to keep the ball rolling on such an important endeavor for our town.

Dogs of all breeds roll into town! Cooma will be host to our K9 friends of all shapes and sizes this weekend as the top dogs of all breeds come to compete in the Annual Cooma Championship Dog Show. Three days of competition will begin this Friday 27 November at the Cooma Showground, and will wrap up around 1pm on Sunday. With more than 80 different breeds represented, from Jack Russell Terriers through to Great Danes, and over 400 dogs set to compete each day, the competition is sure to be fierce as all battle it out for the Cooma Ex-Services Club Best in Show Perpetual Shield. Cooma and District Kennel Club President, Peter Fazey, is looking forward to a great weekend of

competition and welcoming all competitors to Cooma, especially those who braved the cold weather last year. “Last year’s event saw weather of all seasons from rain, hail, snow and gale force winds and competition went on regardless. This year we are expecting much better weather, and look forward to seeing those regular competitors who travel from all over the country to compete at our show.” This year competitors are expected from NSW, Victoria and even South Australia to compete, with the draw card being judges from all over the country including Queensland and Western Australia.

On a very warm evening 33 athletes set 64 Personal Best performances, equalling the most set this season. Kelsey Branscomb (U/11) again tops the list with four PB’s out of four events. Kelsey is improving every time she steps onto the track. Kelsey eclipsed her old mark in the 200 m where she carved four seconds off her performance a month ago; her new mark is at 48.48 sec. Her time for the 60 m Hurdles has come down by two seconds from her first trial over the Hurdles. In the Field events Kelsey is slowly nibbling her way up the U/11 competition, with small gains in both the Long Jump and the Shot Put. Eight other athletes gained three Best Performances on the night, Charlie Pendergast (U/6), Aidon Childs (U/7), Taylah Maurier (U/7), Brianna Rankin (U/7), Harrison Jones (U/8), Annabel Croft (U/9), Gabrielle Steiner (U/9), Zach Ingram . Charlie Pendergast (U/6) returning after a short break enjoyed improvements in 70 m, Long Jump and Vortex Ball. Aidon Childs (U/7), had massive improvements in both of his track events by decreasing his time in both by 2.5 seconds, clocking 52.15 sec for the 200 m dash and again in the 60 m hurdles recording 15.50 sec. Taylah Maurier (U/7) had an enormous PB for the 200 m ripping 4.5 seconds off her old time in clocking 44.79 sec for it. This new speed that Taylah displayed in 200 m also hurled her down the runway of the long jump to launch her into the air to record a jump of 2.27 m, a half a metre gain from her previous leaps. Taylah’s other PB was a small increase in the Vortex Ball. Brianna Rankin (U/7) is another Under 7 girl who smashed her PB over the 200 m by more than three seconds. Brianna came in just behind Taylah in this event, clocking 45.26 seconds. In the long jump, Brianna’s new leg power lifted into the air to her 2nd PB on the night recording a distance of 2.35 m, this time just in front of Taylah. Brianna’s third PB was also in the Vortex Ball with half metre gain to 11.30 m. Harrison Jones (U/8) creamed his Discus throws this week with a PB of 9.31m shattering his old mark by m. His hurdling style is on the improve, as he reduced his time by 1 _ seconds to 14.69 sec. As with the others that have lowered their times in the sprints there has been a vast improvement in the long Jump and Harrison’s leg speed now has propelled him to a PB of 2.42 m, 30cms gain. Annabel Croft (U/9) nearly running at maximum speed over the 60 hurdles is getting the ideal clearance, just clearing them so not to spend too much time in the air. Annabel is reducing the time over each hurdle so more speed can be created between them. She eclipsed her last run by 1 _ seconds to record her best of 13.72 sec. The same result occurred for Annabel, the faster you go on

39

the track the better your long jump will be. In the long jump Annabel extended her PB to 2.87 m 43 cms gain. Another PB came in the Discus where she moved her mark out to 7.48 m, a small gain of 92 cms. Gabrielle Steiner (U/9) has broken through the 13 second barrier for the 60 m hurdles for the first time recording 12.93 sec. Gabrielle can probably lower her times for this event below the 12second mark by the end of the season. Again, we see that increase speed on the track = greater distance in the horizontal jumps and Gabrielle again proves this as she leapt 2.72 m on the night, a 12cs increase. Another milestone was passed by Gabrielle in the Discus, where she broke through the 10m barrier to post her third PB of the night... Zach Ingram (U/10) a new comer this season, hit his straps this week with three PB Performances and equals another in the high jump with a 1metre leap. Zach creamed all his old marks in the 200m with a time of 38.56 sec, and a PB breaking run over the 60 m Hurdles in 12.94 sec. Zach picked up his third PB in the long jump improving his previous best by 16 cms. Other outstanding results: Hugo Steiner (U/7 60 m hurdles with a marvelous time of 14.22 sec less than a second behind the Age Group Record of 13.25 sec (P.B.). Elanna Bateman (U/9) equalled PB over the 60 m hurdles in 13.28 sec. Mikaylah Bateman (U/11) set the grass on fire with two scorching runs with a season Best and a PB for our track in clocking 31.83 sec for the 200 m. Then a PB over the 60 m hurdles with a great time of 11.72 sec. Mikaylah has fantastic ground speed, but needs to concentrate on her hurdling style. If she can do this she will become an awesome hurdler. Renee Wortley (U/14) on her way back towards her best (1.25m), in the high jump leapt 1.15 m on the night. Tony Corey (U/15) cleared 1.20 m at his first high jump for the season. Kirralee England (U/16) enjoyed a good night with two PBs, the first in the Javelin 15.09 m and second one in the Discus with a heave of 19.07 m. Isaac Worley (U/16) looks like he has been watching some WW2 movie “Reach for the Sky”. Isaac managed to create a new PB mark in the high jump with a leap of 1.45 m, a 10cms improvement. The 1.50m mark will be passed by Isaac before New Year. Naomi Burges’s impressive run over the 100m hurdles on grass in 17.84 sec, in her lead up to the Australian All Schools Championships in Hobart on December 4-6.

Tie in Monaro cricket

On Sunday November 15 the Cooma Monaro Under 14s played the ACT DarraWests team at Gordon in very warm conditions and somehow managed to come away with a victory after getting into trouble early. Cooma was first into bat with Laurence Redmond and Michael Bowman and were cruising along at 0/37. The Darra Wests side had a combination of fast bowlers and those just learning and the mix of fast and unorthodox deliveries troubled the Cooma batsman all day. A combination of lack of patience and respect for each delivery and some genuine rushes of blood and enthusiasm for some big hitting resulted in many of the Cooma batsman not going on to make reasonable scores with everyone except Laurance Redmond failing to make double figures despite promising starts. Thankfully Laurence played strong all morning and made an excellent 46 runs. Noah Learoyd didn’t give his wicket away easily batting through for 10 overs but Cooma managed to make only 103 being bowled out in the 24th of their 50 overs. The Darra Wests side came to the crease and had the opportunity to take the game with 50 overs to make the 104 for victory and it looked like they would reach this easily with their opening batsman taking to the Cooma attack with a flurry of boundaries.

Cooma knew their bowling and fielding had to be first class if they were to be a chance and soon enough the Cooma bowlers started to make their mark with Joel Parkyn really stepping up taking three valuable wickets. Kevin Fraser and Isaac Young were unlucky not to get amongst the wickets but their bowling spells still troubled the Canberra side. The Cooma fielding was good despite some missed run out opportunities but the turning point in the match was a classic diving catch taking by Matty Bruce just when the Canberra side was looking like making the runs easily. The Canberra side was soon on the backfoot and the Cooma 14s dug in to try and win the match with Laurance Redmond taking two wickets. Matty Bruce and Noah Learoyd also took their opportunities with a wicket each and at the lunch break Darra – Wests only had one wicket left and still needed more than 30 runs to win. The Cooma boys sharpened up their fielding after the break with Cooma fast bowlers Jared Tonini and Josh Hogan returning to the attack to try and finish the Canberra side off and Jared found the stumps clean bowling the last Canberra batsman. Cooma won the game by more than 20 runs with Laurence Redmond’s heroic 46 runs and 2/3 saving the game for Cooma.

Anthony Wellsmore at the crease for Berridale against Aussie 3s on saturday. Round five of the Monaro District Cricket competition was held on the weekend, with a number of under strength sides being forced to take the field short on numbers. Berridale/Dalgety took on Aussie 3 at Berridale, posting a modest total of 169 off 41 overs. Berridale went out to bat first, with Ben Hearn (21) and Dave Bartle (60) knocking up a solid total at the top of the order. The side was well supported by Simon Freebody and Les Taylor, scoring 32 and 30 respectively, but the tail collapsed, and a string of ducks in the lower order saw the side miss out on a big total. S Bale and D Asanovski were the pick of the Aussie 3 bowlers, taking three wickets apiece, and the bowling was tight with the majority of the bowlers being very economical. G Van Der Plaat and D Asanovski came out firing for Aussie 3, before Van Der Plaat was dismissed by Freebody on 27. Asanovski kept the run rate moving before being bowled by Taylor for 64. Royal Hotel beat an under strength Coffey’s outfit at Snowy Oval, with Coffey’s only managing 77 runs from the innings.

S Joyce on 21 and Mike Introna on 22 were the only Coffey’s batsmen to get a start, with tight bowling from man of the match Chris Jenkins and Aaron Rogers. Tim Lewis batted well at the top of the order for Royal, scoring 32, and was well supported by Rogers who finished on 29. Aussie 2 defeated Colts convincingly at Rotary, with the Colts struggling to 52 after 27 overs. Damien Roach (13) and Josh Fraser (16) were the pick of the batsman, but had no support from the rest of the order. J Cox kept the bowling tight, with six maiden overs and three wickets from his nine over spell. Sam Williams was also strong, taking another three wickets. It Took the Aussie 2 batsmen just nine overs to reach the total, with Cox and Steve Dunn scoring 28 and 22 respectively to secure victory and allow them to keep their position at the top of the ladder. Jindabyne defeated Aussie 1 in another low scoring affair, with Aussie 1 going out to bat and posting only 59. None of the Aussie 1 batsmen got a start, with S Anlezark the only batsman to reach double figures, and sundries being the top scorer on the day. The wickets were shared among the Jindabyne Bowlers, with N Hind taking three, and C Oliver, M Bottom and M Waller picking up two apiece. The Jindabyne batting looked a little bit shaky, but M Lowe (17) and Bottom (23) did enough to secure a win. Next week, Colts play Berridale/Dalgety at Nijong 1, Royal play Aussie 3 at Rotary, Aussie 1 play Aussie 2 at Snowy and Jindabyne play Coffey’s at The Resort.

Simon Freebody anticipated a “bodyline” from Ian Tucker.

spinners. Nic Keighley then took the second wicket at the 30 over mark but then Todd Billman and Jacob Moon got three more wickets to swing the game back in Monaro’s way. Outstanding fielding from Weston, Billman and Young kept the pressure on. Crookwell closed in on Monaro’s score but Harry Roach got four wickets as Crookwell equalled Monaro’s score with their last batsmen at the crease. Joel Smith then bowled the last batsman with two overs left. The game finished with both sides on 175, a great game of cricket. Man of the Match was Harry Roach 26 runs and 4 for 24. Monaro under 15’s cricket side played Crookwell in their second rep game of the season at Nijong on Sunday. In blustery conditions Monaro batted first and Harry Roach and Michael Bowman settled in against the accurate Crookwell bowlers. Bowman fell for three and Roach was joined by Joel Smith and together they built a great partnership in trying conditions with the ball swinging around. Roach was next to go with a good score of 26. Mathew Moxon then pushed the score along with a well hit 23, Jacob Moon then cracked 20 runs and with Luke Bracher 15, Joel Smith 13 and Laurence Redmond 12, Monaro finishing with 175 from their 50 overs. In reply, Crookwell played the same type of game and settled in to work through their overs and to maintain wickets in hand. After a good bowling spell from the opening bowlers of Moxon, Moon, Roach and Smith, it was Michael Bowman that got the first breakthrough with his flighting

As part of an effort to restrict the amount of alcohol related crime and drunken behaviour at the Cooma races, new measures have been put in place in a bid to reduce the amount of intoxicated patrons at the event. Cooma police have given the Cooma Race Club a list of guidelines, which have been treated as recommendations and taken on board by the club. “We’re not having a crackdown, we’re working with the organising committee to try and make it a fun and enjoyable day for everyone,” Cooma Police Inspector Peter Rooney said. “We’re making it a safe and enjoyable event by reducing the amount of alcohol related offences during and after the event.” A licensing sergeant from Queanbeyan met with the race committee on Inspector Rooney’s request, and discussed the issues that affect the event, and measures that could be put in place to eliminate them. The guidelines recommend that only mid strength beer be available at the event and no

alcohol over five percent is to be available. The availability and frequency of transport is to be increased, and no underage drinking will be tolerated, no alcohol is to leave the area, along with other recommendations. The race club would like to enforce the idea that the races will still be a very enjoyable day, and the new restrictions are in place to help enhance the safety and fun for all in attendance. “It’s going to be a great day, we don’t want to scare anybody off,” Race Committee member Ezio Deotto said. “We’re working with the police, not against them. [The race club] is a licensed venue and you need to treat it like you treat a hotel,” Race Club committee member Ezio Deotto said. Inspector Rooney emphasised the fact that the race club and the police have been working hand in hand to restrict intoxication at the event. “[The race club] are being very proactive and keen to come up with solutions to eliminate some of the problems that have happened in the past, and we’re helping them,” he said.

Beddingfield wins open Local Squash player Corey Beddingfield has travelled to Bega to play in the South East Open earlier this month, taking out the competition against some of the region’s best players. Beddingfield defeated another Cooma player, and long-term friendly rival, Justin Bolton, in the semi final, before going on to play Troy Northey, Bega’s number one player who he has never beaten. “I played him last year in the finals and he gave me a flogging, this is the first time I’ve beaten him” Beddinfield said. “It was a very, very hard game. Northey had Beddingield down 2-0, but then Beddingfield fought back to win the final three, after a very tough

third game. Northey had a match point in the third, calling a short game on 14 all, and Beddingield managed to regather and take out the game, and fought back to win all three final games. The South Coast Open takes in players from Cooma, Bega, Narooma, Moruya, Bateman’s bay and surrounding areas, and is one of the biggest squash competitions in the area, thus making it a great accomplishment for Beddingfield to win in just his second year in the competition. Beddingfield will now continue to play locally until the next tournament, and is currently leading the A grade competition.

Finsko’s final fling

Cooma’s fours champions decided

From P44....

Mel Storta (above) has captained his team to success in the men’s fours championships at Cooma Bowling Club. Right, team member Paul Schulz. Peter Marsicano, Paul Schulz, Ross Russell and Mel Storta are the new fours champions at the Cooma Bowling Club after two tremendous performances on Sunday. Required to play two games in the one day they mastered the windy conditions to outplay their opponents in both the semi final and final. On Sunday morning they were up against Mario Frezza, Ignazio Mondello, Troy Pastro and Dave Pastro in what promised to be a very competitive semi final. The early ends were tight with the two sides sharing the spoils. Storta played a telling bowl on the sixth end to change the tone of the game. Troy Pastro had given his side a two shot advantage with two excellent bowls only to see Storta reply with a ‘boomer’ that resulted in his side picking up four shots and a 8 – 3 lead. From this point Storta’s four started to impose themselves on the match. They won eight of the next nine ends to set up a 16 – 4 advantage. Marsicano and Russell were in particularly good touch in this period of the game. Despite their best efforts Pastro’s side could not get any momentum to allow them to get into the game. Every time they looked dangerous Storta and Russell were able to respond to either limit the damage or take the shot. In the end Storta won the game 23 – 7. The final was played after lunch with Storta’s team opposed to Robbie Roberson, Andrew Caldwell, Bob Lowe and Terry Croker with a very gusty wind that proving a real challenge. After a strong showing in their semi final, Croker’s team was confident of performing well. However, not only did the inexperienced members of their team find the conditions very difficult they also ran into a side in great form. Storta’s team picked up where they had left off before lunch. All four players were in great touch as they dominated the match. They handled the windy conditions much better than their opponents and by the 11th end had established a match winning 22 – 3 lead. Croker’s team never stopped trying and fared better in the second half of the game. However, they early lead was too large to catch. The final score was 30 – 12. Meanwhile the second series of the ‘fab five’ social competition is starting to get very interesting with several draws

keeping the players close together. A win and a draw on the weekend sees Col Cottam on top of the table with 13 points and plus 20. Jock Davidson is close behind on 13 plus 19. Jack Sajina is next on 13 plus 10 with Keith Goodwin on 12 plus 5. The winners on Saturday were Ken Boate, Jack Sajina and Denis Steinfort; Jock Davidson, Sandra Wialletton and Paul Cannell; Max Povey, Richard Nichols and Neil McGregor; Col Cottam, Renate Winckel and Keith Goodwin and Mark Venables, Peter Marsicano and Giulio D’Amico. On Sunday Jock Davidson, Mick Mellion and John Schoon had a big win. Gaile Fitzgerald, Cobber Seears and Peter Caldwell finished strongly to take their match. The third game was a draw between Mario Frezza, Col Cottam and Denis Steinfort and Tony Gray, Daphne Buckley and Jack Sajina. The busy district schedule resumes this coming weekend. On Saturday the fourth round of the Monaro Clubs Challenge will be played at Nimmitabel with the hosts playing Cooma and Adaminaby playing Coolamatong. The Cooma side for the Nimmitabel game is: Neil McGregor, Mark Buckley, Peter Marsicano, Ignazio Mondello, Giulio D’Amico, Sergio Roncelli, Denis Steinfort, Paul Cannell and John Schoon. On Sunday the semi finals and final of the district mixed pairs will be played, also at Nimmitabel. Dell and David Turner from Jindabyne will play Lorraine West and Neil McGregor from Cooma in one semi final while the other will be between Coolamatong’s Molly Siddle and Tony Butler and Dawn and Ross Russell from Cooma. The semi finals will start at 9.30am with the final scheduled for 1.15 pm. At Cooma the draw for the triples championship has been completed. One game will be played on Saturday with Simon Schoon, Keith Goodwin and Richard Nichols playing Robbie Roberson, Cobber Seears and Tony Gray. With the very busy district calendar and local carnivals, sides are asked to check the draw and arrange to play games if possible. Games that can not be played beforehand will be scheduled to be played on the weekend of December 19 and 20. There will be fab five social bowls on both Saturday and Sunday.

These included becoming an accomplished disabled skier having been severely affected by polio at 18 months of age; the establishment of Disabled Winter Sports Australia which he served for 31 years; and achieving two of the finest accolades possible for an Australian citizen - he is now a member of the Order of Australia and induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Guest Speaker, the Para Olympian Gold Medallist Michael Milton, began by remembering Ron presenting him with his first NASTAR Snoopy medal at the age of eight, when he had two legs, and then a second one at the age of 10. A gold NASTA medal eluded him until 2003 when whilst working at Beaver Creek ski school, he awarded himself with one of the many in the drawer. Winning the Gold Medal in 1992 at the Para Olympics was a highlight to share with Ron. Paul Griffiths recalled that Ron at the time lying the snow and shouting “You f... beauty! You f... beauty!”. Michael concluded by saying that Ron Finneran and the values he demonstrated, was a role model for people and showed the way forward. The second guest speaker Ashley Blondell, President of DWA, Chairman of the Australian Ski Areas Association and past CEO of Perisher Resorts, described Ron Finneran as having led DWA with honour and passion, independence and a “can do, will do” attitude. He said that due to Ron, two of the finest disabled skiers have been produced – Michael Milton and Dave Monks. Ashley went on to say that the reputation of DWA in leading the way was due to the work of Ron and that he had provided opportunities for disabled people to experience the alpine environment. Ashley expressed thank you to Ron on behalf of the thousands of people who would not have otherwise experienced the Australian Alps. Adrienne Smith who had worked together with Ron for so many years used the words of Sit Skier Dave Monks to describe Ron as a “big heart in a little frame.” Finally it was Ron’s turn. He began by thanking his family - his Swedish-born wife Lisa, daughter Carina and son Timothy for their support to enable him to do his work for DWA. In his speech, Ron spoke of gun ho Marty Maybury who lost both legs to Meningococcal disease, and is now on track for the Para Olympics in Vancouver. Ron read from a letter from Marty’s father, Paul who thanked Ron for making such a contribution to disabled skiers by showing there was a way forward and help rebuild self esteem. The support and advice given to Marty through the elite training programme gave him the opportunity to reach his full potential and Marty has now been accepted into a medical degree. In closing, Ron said “It’s not what you do on the hill, it’s what you do as a result of it! The ability to ski from the top of Crackenback to the bottom was one of my greatest achievements.” Ashley Blondel hosted Finsko’s Final Fling participants to breakfast on Sunday and to farewell Ron, who now at the age of 65, is headed for serious golf and joining the Australian Grey Nomads Association by commencing on the international scene with a trip to Sweden in June. He will be accompanied by Lisa.

Local NRL footballer Stuart Flanagan has signed a one-year deal with the Cronulla Sharks earlier this month, and is looking forward to the opportunity to prove himself with a new club. Flanagan has spent time with the West Tigers and the Canberra Raiders in recent years, and was released from his contract with the Canberra based side to pursue his career with the Sharks. A shoulder injury early in 2009 meant that first grade matches were hard to come by for Flanagan, and he found himself in the lower grades towards the back end of the season. “Last year was a bit disappointing. Cronulla have given me a go up here,” Flanagan said. “I’m looking forward to a good season with the Sharks.” Following on from a disappointing season in 2009, the players and coaching staff at Cronulla are looking for much improvement in 2010, and Flanagan believes he can be a part of that as a starting member of the first grade squad. “It will give him an opportunity to get his career back on track after falling out of site over the last couple of years,” coach Ricky Stuart said. “His ability out of dummyhalf as an attacking player is great and is something we will be looking for throughout next
