Jounama power station opens Snowy Hydro Limited has officially opened its first significant new power station asset to be built since completion of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1974. The $30 million Jounama Small Hydro Power Station at Talbingo will produce up to 14.4 MW of renewable electricity. Over a 12 month period the power station produces 55 000 mega watt hours – enough to power more than 6000 homes. This is done by utilising water that would otherwise have passed unharnessed through the Jounama Dam’s spillway. CEO and Managing Director, Snowy Hydro Limited, Mr Terry Charlton said: “It’s projects like this that represent Snowy Hydro’s ability to adapt in a changing electricity market through innovation, continuous improvement and looking for new opportunities to increase the generating capacity of the Snowy Scheme today. “The success of Snowy Hydro in the National Electricity Market to date has allowed us to earn sufficient income to undertake projects like the Jounama Small Hydro Power Station. “It’s a positive outcome for the company, local community and

energy users who support renewable energy. More than 350 people worked on the Jounama project – a mix of Snowy Hydro employees and contractors from both the local area and further afield. Major works included a 30m high, 13m diameter silo that was built on the downstream side of Jounama Dam to house the turbine generator and associated control systems. To accommodate the new hydro power station, the existing river diversion tunnel was modified, which involved teams of divers working 30m under water for a six-month period to open up the intake of the river diversion tunnel. Under the dam wall the original 500 tonne concrete plug was removed to allow a new 4m diameter, 60m long steel pipeline to be installed to carry water to the power station. The Kaplan turbine installed in the Jounama station is the first of its kind for the Snowy Scheme. The station connects to the electricity grid via an 11kV transmission line which extends from the station to a new switch yard, which connects to the 66kV Talbingo-Tumut transmission line via 700m of upgraded lines.

Health advisory committee The Cooma Health Service Local Advisory Committee has welcomed three new members to its ranks, with local residents Kaye Anderson, Therese Ferguson and Maria Linkenbagh joining current community representatives Pat Scheele (chairman), Lee Evans, Sue Litchfield and Chris Reeks. The primary role of the local advisory committee is to act as a conduit between the local community and the health service. Local and district residents can contact any of the committee members to pass on their concerns and/or comments in respect of local health services. In this way, the committee is able to identify the service needs of local communities and pass this information to the site manager, Elizabeth Mendes, to ensure that

decisions about local health services reflect community needs. The telephone contact details of committee members are: Kaye Anderson 6 4 5 2 1782; Lee Evans 6299 4899 (b/h), 6452 1329 (w/ends); Therese Ferguson 6453 3278; Maria Linkenbagh 0403 080 445; Sue Litchfield 6453 3269; Chris Reeks 6452 3381; Pat Scheele 6454 4134. The committee meets at the hospital on the third Thursday of each month. If you have anything you would like brought to the attention of a meeting, just call one of the above committee members and let them know the details.

Club assists MEIS funds Monaro Early Intervention Service Inc (MEIS) is very grateful for the financial assistance of Cooma Ex-Services Club who has recently donated $1000 to help trial a transport access scheme for some MEIS families. Occasionally, some families who need to access the services at MEIS have difficulty organising transport to and from the Hill Street centre, so the money will supplement taxi fares for those who can’t make alternative arrangements. This will ensure that the children’s progress is not interrupted, as regular participation in the programs is essential. MEIS is a non government, not for profit, community managed organisation, which helps children aged 0-6 with a disability or

developmental delay, such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Verbal Dyspraxia and Down Syndrome. It receives some government funding but relies heavily on fundraising and donations to continue its programs. MEIS gratefully acknowledges Cooma Ex-Services Club’s support of its community based work. The recent donation will help the centre to provide equal opportunity for everyone who needs to access it.

Cooma Ex-Services’ club secretary manager Kade Morrell presents the cheque to MEIS director Rhonda Howie and president Robyn Boyce.

Top honour for Lion Tony Last Wednesday evening saw the annual changeover dinner for the Cooma Lions Club held at the Cooma ExServiceman’s Club. Incoming President John Neilson was proud to announce that Tony Kaltoum was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award. The announcement was made at the end of the meeting and completely took Mr Kaltoum by surprise. The award is recognised internationally and Mr Kaltoum will now have his name on the board at Lions Headquarters in America. “I was so surprised, it is the highest honour of the Lions Club to be awarded this. I am honoured that the Cooma members nominated me and recognised the work I have done for the community,” Mr Kaltoum said on Thursday morning. “I couldn’t sleep last night, I was too excited. We are blessed to live in a community like Cooma, I can compare from when I came from Lebanon. In 1962 I decided to visit my sister in Sydney after the civil war and stay for one year. I opened a hairdressers in Sydney then when I was on holidays in 1971 to visit a friend who owned a motel in Cooma he told me to stay here. I decided I’d try it for one year and opened my hairdressers and I’m still here today. “My eldest son was born in Sydney but the next two were born in Cooma and we are all proud Australians.” Lions International recognises outstanding individuals by bestowing on them an award that

is named for its founder, Melvin Jones. Fellowship Award (LCIF) is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The recipient of this award becomes a model because of the exemplary service to his club and the community for which it serves. There have only ever been two other Lions members in Cooma to receive this award, John Field and John Davies. Mr. Kaltoum joined the lions in 1977; he has been president twice and treasurer for 20 consecutive years but 23 years in total. Baring secretary, Mr. Kaltoum has performed all of the committee positions available on the board over his 33 years service to the Lions club.

Bombala High School RFS cadets graduate Member for Monaro Steve Whan has congratulated 14 Bombala High School students for completing the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Secondary Schools Cadet Program. Mr Whan presented the students with their graduation certificates during a ceremony at Bombala High School. “These 14 young people are a credit to their school and their community. They’ve not only learnt valuable lessons about fire safety, they’ve also shown great commitment and team work while completing the Program,” he said. “They’ve also experienced the RFS ideals of dedication and community service and the rewards of volunteering.” The RFS Secondary Schools Cadet Program is conducted over 10 weeks, teaching students basic fire-fighting skills and helping them to develop leadership skills, initiative and community spirit.

“The RFS has a proud history of volunteering, protecting the community during fires and helping out in times of emergency,” Mr Whan said. “Members of the RFS are exemplary community citizens and I encourage all of these graduates to build on their new skills and experiences by joining their local brigade”, Mr Whan said. 2010 Cadets: Sam Buckman, Michael Harris, Lindsay Ingram, Lucy Illes-Ingram, Shae Jones, Chantelle Lewis, Kate Mustard, Lily Platts, Eliza Reed, Luke Rowling, Harry Sellers, Dallas Stewart, Richard Stewart and Sara Stres. A very special thanks needs to go to Vern Dunning, a volunteer member of the Cooma-Monaro RFS team who has brought the fire truck down from Cooma each week and taken the Cadets through the program. NZ Visitors Welcome Ediitor, I wish to apologise to our New Zealand visitors for the negative advertising which continues to invade our local airwaves in the name of our tourist industry, particularly the Skifields. I for one, wish to make it quite clear as a Motel operator and Tour Operator, that the theme of the adds does not reflect the views of the majority of those Australians who hold our Kiwi neighbours in the highest regard. They were there with us at Gallipoli, there with us in Vietnam, and share with us a very unique relationship in the world. The advertisements which are aimed at deterring our skiiers from travelling to NZ for a winter holiday, have worn out their welcome, having now suitably offended our visitors and friends for two years. This is now akin to verbal underarm bowling.

My comments are made as a result of a discussion with one of my young guests, and comments from visitors last year while doing 4WD Tours to the snowfields. The humour has worn thin, the effect is counterproductive and the odium of racism lingers loud and clear. New Zealanders consider yourselves welcome in our mountains, as much as we are welcomed in yours.

Praise for RFS Editor: Fire Mitigation Sparks Praise for RFS We would like to congratulate the NSW Rural Fire Service for the balanced and positive approach to the current planning of bushfire mitigation works within the village of Eucumbene Cove. We live in an area which may be subject to fire threat in the future. It is also environmentally sensitive as it adjoins Kosciuszko National Park and is close to the Jagungal Wilderness Area. The most effective method of fire mitigation is to ensure that the immediate area surrounding assets (eg residences) is relatively clear of fine ground fuels and overhanging tree limbs. While we had concerns about the procedures adopted during previous fire mitigation works it is great to see that the current approach is so well-planned. All residents and absentee owners are currently being consulted by members of

the local RFS Monaro Team and State Headquarters regarding the removal of trees which may pose a risk during a fire event. The RFS recommendations to remove trees are being made in accordance with the provisions of the Bush Fires Act and within the Review of Environmental Factors being currently undertaken. RFS Officers have assisted us and our neighbours to identify trees for removal and are providing support in this process. As the authors of the original and adopted Plan for the Mitigation of Bushfire on the Village of Eucumbene Cove, we applaud these efforts and the professional manner of the RFS Officers who are involved in the planning and conduct of these works. The Labor School of Backflips seems to have just changed management, not curriculum. But some media are spreading more spin which is quite alarming. Most of it is sledging our erstwhile leader, painting him every shade of unsavoury,

soulutions pty ltd Anne and Brian Smith beside the 1960 photo of the Man From Snowy River Hotel, Perisher Valley One hundred and fifty guests upheld the party reputation of the Man From Snowy River Hotel in Perisher Valley on Saturday June 26, when they danced to a 14-piece swing band as part of the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Hotel. It was a golden, glamorous evening beginning with canapés at 6.30 pm, supper at 8.30 and winding up at 2.30 on Sunday morning. The informal party evening was organised by Ann and Brian Smith who wanted to share the occasion with their friends and clients who had visited the “Man” over the past 25 years while they have managed the hotel. Built in 1960 by Ken Murray, whose company K G Murray Publishing held the franchise for the ski lifts and hotels, the Man From Snowy River Hotel opened for business on June 30 with Fritz Feisinger as the licensee. Fritz with his harp, and the European ski instructors who played any available musical instrument, very quickly created the lively atmosphere for which the venue became known. Adam Zapenski was famous for his bongo drum performances. When Fritz took his harp to Marritz following its completion in 1962, Ken Murray’s sister Gwen Cooper and her husband Alan, took over the licence and managed the “Man” for 12 years. The Coopers were much loved by the hotel and mountain staff. Known as “Mother Cooper”, Gwen was known to be strict but very fair. It is said that she sprinkled talcum powder behind the bathroom doors when the guests departed, and she then checked to see if the house staff cleaned the bathrooms correctly. Woe betide the staff member who had not removed the talcum powder. The Cooper reign ended in 1973 when Kerry Packer and Consolidated Press purchased K G Murray Publishing Company and its Perisher Valley assets. Next followed a series of managers including Chris Brown and his wife Susie, until 1985 when Ann and Brian took over the management for a Sydneybased syndicate of four families – Lendvay, Breuer, Burger and Bart – who had purchased the Hotel from Consolidated Press. Originally catering for 90 guests, the “Man” underwent extensive renovations in the 1980s and extensions were built to provide accommodation for the owners and family rooms, increasing the bed capacity to 150. Today the 3-star NRMA rated hotel offers a steam room, gym, beauty salon, and undercover parking for cars. In the future, the Smiths hope to make the Man From Snowy River Hotel into a boutique family hotel. During the first week in August this year, special offers such as beauty treatments, yoga, pilates and snow shoeing, will be available for people wanting an alpine experience without needing to ski. Whilst billed as a family hotel, this August there will be also be a couples only week. When asked if she wished to add a comment regarding the past 25 years, Ann promptly replied “they were the best 25 years of my life!”

It’s tax time again

Time to start thinking about lodging your tax return

Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo today reminded people to start thinking about preparing and lodging their 2010 tax return. “From July1, people can prepare and lodge their return online using e-tax, which is secure and easy to use,” Mr D’Ascenzo said. “Nearly 2.4 million people used e-tax last year – the quickest and easiest way to lodge. People who use e-tax will receive their notice of assessment and any refund due more quickly than paper returns.” E-tax also allows you to download information from a range of government departments and third party organisations directly into your tax return, including: • pensions and allowances • payment summarie • bank interest • private health insurance details.

Building approvals reflect impact of successive rate rises, says MBA-ACT “The only glimmer of hope in these figures is that Statement by Executive Director of the MBAapprovals for private sector houses actually rose by ACT, John Miller 1.7 per cent for the month,” he said. Canberra’s peak building and construction industry organisation, Master Builders ACT has expressed concern 1.00pm Saturday 10th July 2010 at the degree to which rising interest rates have impacted consumer sentiment in the wake of the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics building approvals data revealing a 6.6 per cent national seasonallyadjusted decline.

MORTGAGEE AUCTION

The executive director of the MBA-ACT, John Miller said the 6.6 per cent decline represented a significant indicator of the degree to which activity levels within the Australian home building industry had been and would be affected by the rapid tightening in monetary policy.

Claire’s gardening notes for July With Claire Caldwell of Cooma Gas & Garden Supplies Okay, July is here and now maybe the true winter cold will be here as well. June has been a relatively warm winter month with a few teasing drops of rain but nothing like what we really need, a few frosty mornings and some really mild sunny days. Some garden plants have started to respond to this milder weather with some spring flowering bulbs pushing through and producing some flowers already. The good weather has enabled us to spend plenty of time in the garden getting it into ship shape condition for the rest of the winter, in preparation for spring. In the coming month there will be still plenty to do even on the colder days. FRUIT TREES. For those of us who have really embraced the “Grow Your Own” at home concept, will be able to plant out bare root fruit tree stock which will arrive in store this month. Available will be apples, pears, apricots, nectarines, peaches, almond, quince, mulberry, plums figs, dwarf nectarine - NEW!!!! Berries will include boysenberry, raspberry, thornless blackberry, gooseberry, strawberry, red currant, black currant and both black and white grapes. If you would like to reserve any of the above fruit tree and or berry stock, please contact us ASAP and they will be put aside for you. There will also be some stock of ornamental deciduous trees and lilacs arriving with the fruit trees. These are Malus ioensis (Crabapple), Claret Ash, Golden Elm, Silver Birch, Manchurian Pear, Flowering Apricot and Lilace. If you are interested in these and would like bare rooted stock, let us know and we can reserve these as well. ROSES. We had our first delivery of NEW SEASONS Roses arrive during June and are expecting to receive another batch this month and the final delivery in August. If you haven’t already placed an order for bare root roses to be held for you then now is the time to do so before the next lot of roses arrive. There are some of the New Release roses for 2010 arriving and these include: Slim Dusty, View Beauty, Betty Cuthbert, St John, Climbing Jashina, Climbing Moonlight, Climbing Laguna. Some of last year’s releases: Jane McGrath, Ebbtide, Climbing Blushing Pierre, Climbing Golden Gate are coming in as well. We will have the Mary McKillop rose in stock this season in remembrance of the soon to be Saint, plus plenty of your favourites: The Childrens Rose, Double Delight, Blue Moon, Just Joey, Mr Lincoln, Iceberg, Friesia, Black Boy. Roses in stock are Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, David Austin, Climbing and Standard. BARGAIN!!!! Last season’s roses – some still available 25 percent discount. WEEPING BEAUTIES Now available are the beautiful specimen garden treasures – weeping trees. Varieties are: Weeping Apricot – Pink blossom in July/August, Weeping Cherry – Pink and white blossom/single or double flowers, Weeping Pussy Willow – Ornamental catkins

in spring, Weeping Peach – Dark pink and mid pink blossom, Standard Crabapple – Spreading horizontal to pendulous branch / pink flowers, Weeping Birch – Standard weeping form of silver birch. These weeping and standard trees make a wonderful statement in your garden when fully grown. I have a weeping apricot which when in flower during July makes a stunning feature in the winter garden. The flowers are not affected by frost and it will have a floral display right through July and into August. The pendulous branches weep to ground level creating a real umbrella effect and also has a sweet perfume. Truly beautiful. NATIVE PLANTS For those gardeners looking for no fuss garden plants then maybe natives are for you. There are new varieties coming available quite regularly. Bottlebrushes (callistemon spp.) come in a large array of colours and heights. Grevilleas range from ground covers to tall shrubs and also come in a large colour spectrum. Eriostemon or Philothica have new varieties available called Winter Rouge and Flower Girl. To keep natives looking good, a regular prune is all they need and a bit of TLC to get them established. VEGETABLE GARDEN If you are considering joining the “Grow Your Own” revolution, why not begin to prepare an area of your garden for vegetable growing. There are some great products available for enclosing vegie beds, or you can build your own using sleepers, concrete blocks etc. If using treated pine sleepers try and get the eco friendly treated timber, not the CCA treated timber, as it can leach into the soil. Dig over virgin soil and remove any weeds and grass – add plenty of organic matter and dig in. Check pH level and add lime or dolomite lime if necessary. If the soil is dusty dry then a wetting agent may be needed. Now if all of these tasks are not enough to keep you busy for the month, then the following should fill up your spare time. • Sharpen or get sharpened all gardening shears, secateurs, saws. We can arrange this. • Oil handles and hone blades of shovels, spades etc. • Give your mower a clean and overhaul. • Keep potted plants watered when and if necessary. • Check plants for insect attack especially aphids on hellebores and pansies. • Check indoor plants are coping with the artificial heating – not too dry – no insect attack. • Check pansies for powdery mildew fungus attack. • Prune apple, pear plum, nectarine, peach trees to keep to manageable size. • DON’T prune apricots or cherries and leave ROSES until August. • Stock up ready for spring – fertilisers, potting mixes, mulch, garden chemicals. • If you are planting bare root stock DON’T FORGET THE SEASOL. • Even though it is winter there is still much to be enjoyed in the winter garden and the winter season eg a warm sunny spot, a hot cup of coffee and a good gardening book.

Families needing Farmers Campaign Lifetime traceability easily lost campaign will see the unveiling of a television commercial at the NSW Farmers’ Association’s Annual Conference 2010: The Value of Agriculture. TV personality Ben Dark and Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes have both come on board to support the campaign, and will appear in the television commercial to air in Sydney and across rural NSW later this year. “Both Ben Dark and Phillip Hughes have a solid understanding and background in farming and I thank them for supporting this exciting campaign,” Mr Armstrong said. Also included in the NSW Farmers’ Association’ campaign will be a website highlighting the produce farmers are producing around the State. Mr Armstrong will launch the Families needing Farmers campaign on Tuesday July 20, during his official address to the NSW Farmers’ Association Annual Conference. NSW Farmers’ Association Annual Conference: Value of Agriculture will be held July 20-22 at Sydney’s Olympic Park.

$140 enclosure permit rent for one year The NSW Government’s rent concession on enclosure permits over Crown roads will continue for another year. Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly, said from July 1, enclosure permit rent for farmers will be $140 for a year. “The new rent is substantially less than the general minimum rate of $412,” the Minister said. “Enclosure permit rents had previously been frozen since 2004 at $350 for three years. “The rent concession was introduced to ease the financial burden of drought on rural land holders. “At that time land holders were offered the opportunity to purchase enclosed roads with the incentive of reduced application costs.

“These incentives remain for any landholder who wants to make an application. “As of today, nearly 13,000 applications have been received from the 32,000 current account holders. “Barring environmental restrictions or other impediments, the NSW Government believes nonessential enclosed roads are better managed by private land holders.” More information about purchasing roads held under enclosure permit is available on the Land and Property Management Authority’s website (www.lpma.nsw.gov.au) or at local Crown Lands offices. An enclosure permit allows a property owner to enclose a Crown road or watercourse within their property by fencing.

Chris Haylock District Veterinary Inspector The National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) was set up to track the movements of an animal throughout its lifetime, from birth, to saleyard, new property and further. At slaughter, the entire lifetime history could be tracked, if demanded by export markets. While many animals are now lifetime traceable, many lose their traceability at some stage in the process. Each week, a report of cattle that lose traceability is created. At each Livestock Health and Pest Authority (LHPA) across the state, these reports are checked and many owners contacted to try and work out what has caused these stock to lose their lifetime traceability. In recent months, the main cause of lost traceability in the Bombala area (and possibly much of NSW) has been through agistment movements. Sometimes stock haven’t been recorded as coming back home again. Another common mistake is the sale of stock on a home Vendor Declaration form, when they were away on agistment. Producers can be notified directly of problems, if they have their own NLIS account. “Any producer with access to the internet is encouraged to get their own NLIS account”, said Chris Haylock, District Veterinarian with the Southeast LHPA. “If you have an account, you will be contacted about any errors”. If errors are found quickly, they can often be corrected. This can also ensure

lifetime traceability for those remaining on the property. If you have an NLIS account, you can also use it to check on PIC numbers of straying stock that you find on your place. You can check that movements on and off your PIC have been recorded and you can make your own notifications of stock movements, such as when buying bulls, moving stock to agistment or to reserves or shows. An NLIS account costs nothing and is available to any producer with a Property Identification Code (PIC number). There is help in familiarising yourself with the database. “The telephone help staff for the NLIS database are fantastic and can work through any issue with you”, Chris Haylock said. “They know they can save your valuable time if you ring and get their help.” The contact number is 1800 654 743. There will be confusion, as there always is, in the early stages of computerisation. With the use of the NLIS database to monitor sheep movements, producers will have even more use for their database account, such as when buying rams privately. Recording sheep movements on the NLIS will hopefully deliver the traceability of sheep products that our markets demand, without the expense of electronic tags that the Victorians are pushing for. If we can make a mob movement work on the NLIS database, so that one record provides details for a whole mob of sheep, it will be a lot less work than scanning individual animals and paying for electronic tags.

NSW Farmers’ Association will launch its Families needing Farmers campaign next month at its annual conference in Sydney. NSW Farmers’ Association President Charles Armstrong says this campaign will be the first of its type to be seen anywhere in NSW and aims to bridge the gap between metropolitan consumers and farmers. “Research has shown that consumers in Sydney have very little understanding of where their food comes from and what happens on a farm to produce that food,” Mr Armstrong said. “Around half the people living in Sydney, between the age of 25-34, have never set foot on a farm! “Our campaign will invite those people to look beyond the supermarkets shelves and their kitchen pantry and get to know the people who are producing their food,” Mr Armstrong said. “Each year, every farmer feeds 150 people in Australia and 450 overseas - and they do it with pride.” Phase One of the Families needing Farmers

Simon Bolton and Alicia Clarke are the new owners of Mainstreet Clothing. The previous owners of the store Jane and Oliver Cay said they had sold the store after four years of successful trading so that they could concentrate on their other business interests, Birdsnest and farming. Jane said they were so grateful for the amazing job Mick Askell had done managing the store and were now thrilled to hand over to such a capable, hard-working and enthusiastic young couple. Simon and Alicia are both “locals having been born, bred, educated and “grown up in Cooma. Simon previously worked with Kerry and Lorraine Blencowe at Cooma Menswear (now Mainstreet Clothing) for 11 years and continued to work with Jane Cay at Mainstreet for a short period. Simon has extensive experience and knowledge in the retail industry, and in particular, a good understanding of the needs of our local customers of all ages, catering to our climate. Riposte Lisa Ashurst How do you catch a unique animal? Unique up on him! It’s also a good way to catch chooks; unique – sorry, you sneak up on them while they’re busy scoffing their dinner and just snatch up the ones you want. It saves a lot of stress and feathers and none of them even realise what’s happening, but by the time they do, it’s old news. I discovered this method some time ago and was happy to find that it still works just as well when I needed to catch three of my excess roosters last week and pop them into a travel box for their trip down south to

my sister’s place. You see, she needed two and one of her neighbours needed one and as I had plenty to spare (thanks to a hidden nest that produced a lot of males) I had more than enough to go round. I still have plenty of spares if anyone knows anyone who wants a pretty speckled rooster, okay! It got me thinking though about the number of times we pull swifties like that on our pets. Like the worming tablets cunningly concealed in tasty morsels, the cuddles that precede the quick squirt of medication into an unsuspecting mouth and if you own pets you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. If you don’t, but have kids, you’ll still get the idea. It’s downright sneaky, I know, but given the difficulty in explaining to Moggy and Doggy why they need to have these things, it’s just easier to slip it to them on the sly.

us a call or pop in and speak to one of the friendly staff. They can also arrange music, flowers photography anything you require for your special day or function. PJ’s @ Dodds is located in the Dodds Hotel, 94 Commissioner Street Cooma, phone 0438 060 066 or email Pjsdodds@hotmail. com to place your order before you collect it or to have it delivered. Pictured, Paula Hovey with two satisfied diners.

Ditto with chooks. Holding the door of the travel box open and inviting them to step inside because they were about to embark on a pleasant journey down to Gippsland was not going to cut it. Sneaking up on them, snatching them up and slipping them quickly into the box however worked a treat! Admittedly, they weren’t thrilled with the confinement but that’s only because they had no idea of the joy and bliss that awaited them once they reached their destination where they’d be introduced to their stylish new digs but it would have been too hard to explain it to them so I didn’t. Anyhow, they arrived okay and have settled in well and are very happy and that’s all I can ask for...except maybe some other nice homes for a few more of these speckled boys. Any takers?

Promoting Cooma and region Cooma Chamber of Commerce & Industry has this year accepted a new role in partnership with the Cooma Monaro Shire Council to manage the Region’s representation at the 2010 Country and Regional Living Expo. The Country & Regional Living Expo is an annual event held in Sydney with the aim of highlighting the benefits of a move to regional NSW for both family and business. At a time of ever increasing population congestion and rising cost of living in metropolitan centres the attractiveness offered by a tree or sea change is at the fore of many people’s minds. David Shelley, President of Cooma Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said “Our participation in this year’s Expo is as much about attracting new business and families to Cooma and the region as promoting existing businesses. Cooma and the region has great potential for healthy growth and we want to facilitate this by promoting what the town has to offer; Opportunity, Affordability and Lifestyle. “This year’s Expo has a business focus he said, we want to highlight to businesses considering relocating to or setting up in Regional NSW just what Cooma can offer them. We have a purpose built light industrial area in Polo Flat and across the entire town precinct we have significant under-utilised infrastructure, including infrastructure ready for the rollout of advanced technologies. As a town we are ahead of many other regional centres in this regard and we need to

promote it to potential businesses. In addition to investing in the fit-out costs of the regional exhibit, members of the Cooma Chamber of Commerce & Industry will man the stand at this year’s Expo promoting existing businesses, the opportunities for new business and the quality of life offered by the town and surrounding region. “Cooma is the regional service centre and hub, with mountain lakes and other high country recreation, Canberra city experience and the far south coast beaches all just around an hour away, Mr Shelley said, “Add to this a relaxed rural lifestyle, great sense of community, affordable housing, extensive retail, sporting facilities, good health, educational and other services, Cooma is where you need to be! The travel time for many city families to reach just one of those lifestyle experiences let alone all is significantly longer. An important factor underpinning the viability of growing Cooma is that with all this infrastructure already available and additional benefits such as the planned introduction of international flights into Canberra, Cooma can achieve a phased population growth over time of say 50 percent without losing its enviable rural town character and sense of community. The Cooma Chamber of Commerce will be holding a General Meeting at 6pm next Tuesday July 13 at the Cooma Ex-Services Club open to both members and non-members.

St Patrick’s School renovations complete As it is quite obvious to see St Patrick’s school has nearly completed their renovations in the primary and infants departments. The extent of work that has been carried out would not have been possible if it weren’t for the Building Education Revolution (BER) and the Primary Schools 21st Century (P2) program. Work has now continued for almost 12 months and has given St Patrick’s wonderful facilities, including a new staffroom, toilets for both staff and children, security fences, covered outdoor areas, sheltered walkways and storage areas. There is now crimsafe mesh on the windows that allow for security as well as good vision out and offer privacy if looking in. “The BER has allowed the school to upgrade school infrastructure that would have otherwise been beyond our resourses for many years to come” principal Phil Stubbs

said. “The school will be responsible for the final stages, including landscaping, play equipment and internal fitouts.” “I have had imput the whole way through the process, from regular meetings with the architect to the CEO finance controlled side of the program and almost daily meetings with the sight supervisor. This was mainly so we could voice any additional concerns, improve efficiency and ensure we were getting value for money.” “This redevelopment has featured a significant amount of work from local tradespeople who expressed interest and submitted a tender for the project when it was advertised. “The main focus on K-6 now can be learning rather than maintenance and making do, as we had been and would still be if it weren’t for the BER. “Under the teachers guidance the SRC and primary environmental group have been raising funds for their sensory garden, which will be a highlight in the infants campus. They have been designing the garden and are going to include a path, ‘feature rock’ and plants that can be smelt

and touched. Amongst this will be the indigenous totem poles that the children helped make. “In all the whole process has been one I have been proud to be affiliated with. It has gone smoothly from the start, with great communication through the entire process from all involved. “The school is now able to concentrate maintenance on the high school as the primary and infants have new, modern minimal maintenance buildings and covered walkways”, Mr Stubbs said.

Spinning Hill revisited by CORC

Cooma Off Road Club welcomed its members to its third round of racing for the year at Spinning Hill. The venue was once again generously hosted by landholders Fred and Julie Freebody. Racing proved to be just as exciting as a few weeks ago when the Amcross riders descended here for one of the series rounds. Spinning Hill proved to be a very popular venue amongst the riders and they were not disappointed with the layout of the track. The track was approximately two kilometres in length, challenging in some spots, but safe enough to fend off any injuries. According to Vicki Flynn, she did not have to write out one accident report and was thankful for not having to deal with that task. As usual, spectators were rewarded with some spectacular racing with a view to most areas of the racing track.

Working bees are always on the day before a race day. Please make an effort to attend the working bees so that jobs can be done in a timely manner. Three volunteers turned up on the Saturday before race day – is this fair? How about some of the younger members of the Cooma Off Road Club giving a helping hand. It would be appreciated. Also, the following positions need filling. RACE SECRETARY – Currently CORC does not have a Race Secretary and relies on outside help to fill in on race days. If anyone could fill these shoes please visit our website: www.corc. org.au. You’ll be amazed at what a fulfilling and rewarding job it can be, CORC committee members will guide the applicant through the process, please give it some thought. SECRETARY – The club’s current

Cooma Colts results Under 10s Cooma Colt’s under 10s played Queanbeyan Blues and won the game 24 points to 18 points. The boys came out strongly with Luke Day having a very strong run to score the first try minutes into the game, Jack Reid then converted. The boys went on to score during the first half with James Hill scoring one and Lachlan Inskip scoring two. We were lucky with our conversion as Sean McDonald, James Hill and James Cahill all converted. Queanbeyan came out stronger in the second half to take control of the ball and score three tries but the boys kept up the strong defence and won the game. McDonald awards went to Luke Day and Chris McDonald and player of the week went to Matthew McDonald. The boys would like to wish Cameron Faulkner a Happy Birthday for this week. Thank you to Bernie McDonald, Peter Gersak (league safe) and Amber Zammit (FAO) Under 11s The Under 11s had an early start travelling to Yass to verse the team that was equal on the ladder with them. In cold foggy conditions Yass got off to a great start with all of the possession and the Colts were down 12 nil within the first 10 minutes of the game. Finally the Colts got some possession and a great solo run by Zac Saddler made the half time score 12 points to 4. In the second half with the sun finally out, the boys stepped it up a gear in defence and attack with several good runs by Carson Barrett, Jake Hedger and Casey McLeod. The boys hit back at Yass with another try and conversion by Zac Saddler to make the score 12 points to 10. Yass also hit back with another two quick converted tries making the score 24/10. With 10 minutes to go the Colts started throwing the ball around with Zac Saddler scoring once again and Dane Freimanis was able to convert the try to make the score 24/16. Will Shingles stepped and weaved his way through carrying two Yass players, to score and Timothy McGregory converted leaving the score at 22/24, unfortunately time ran out and this was the final score with Colts narrowly losing their first game of the season. This was the best effort in defence and attack by the team as a whole so far this year. McDonalds awards went to Casey McLeod, Zac Saddler, Dane Freimanis, Carson Barrett, Video

Ezy Award went to Jake Hedger and the medal went to Will Shingles. Thanks to those parents who helped run the kiosk this week. Under 12s The Colt’s U12s played Bungendore Tigers in Bungendore on Sunday. The young colts displayed their best team effort of the year. The game was only in its infancy when Mitch Rolfe scored out wide for the boys to take a 4 points to 0 lead. The Tigers then pressed the Colts’ line hard but great defence held them at bay. Dan Swain took the score to 8 points with a typical hard running try. Soon after Jesse McMahon finished off a great team try to increase the lead to 12. Just on half time Mitch Rolfe raced in for his number two to make it 16 to 0 at the break. The boys continued where they left off in the first half by scoring another five tries. Damo Hayden, Jimmy Russell, Ben Hayden and Mitch Rolfe all scored 4 pointers. Jess McMahon was the only successful goal kicker of the day. The final score 38 points to 0. Coach ‘Schoie’ was very pleased with the boys effort, particularly their team work and defence. The medal this week went to Harry Nichols, the Percy’s award to Dan Swain, and the McDonalds’ awards to Damo Hayden and new recruit Abe Patton. Under 13s The U13s played Crookwell on Sunday at the Cooma Showground. With the right attitude, the boys started with plenty of vigour. The boys managing to put on three tries in the first half, going to the break up 18 to nil. The boys continued the attack and great defence to finish the game up 38 to nil. The coach was pleased with holding Crookwell to nil; this was achieved by great defence from Josh Zammit, Nick Gersak-Dwyer, Connor Rendoth, Austin Riley, Sean Bodycott- Pielli and Patrick Bond. Our attack was pleasing with Aaron Pidcock and Jerod Blyton setting up some great plays that led to good team tries. As usual Andrew Crimmins and Daniel Anderson ran with great vigour leading to great tries. Our outside backs Josh Steinke, Jeremy Mackey, Travis Patton and Daniel Hopkin never let the side down in both attack and defence. Point scorers Andrew Crimmins three tries, Daniel Anderson three tries, Josh Steinke one try, Aaron Pidcock four goals, Connor Rendoth one goal. Our

next three games will be tough, as we play the three top teams on the ladder. We are looking forward to the challenge. Under14s Cooma’s U14 team took on the Tuggeranong Buffaloes at the Showground on Sunday. In the opening minutes it looked like Cooma were going to drop off tackles and let the depleted Buffaloes take an easy passage to the try line, but that wasn’t to be. Cooma stood strong in defence and following a kick that was toed ahead by Austin Willis-Reynolds and re-gathered, the Colts took an early lead. Luke Johnson took a bustling run to score out wide with Josh Hogan successfully kicking the very difficult goal. Jack Williams let loose on the Buffaloes and scored three tries, taking the half-time score to 26 to 4 Cooma’s way. Forwards Kurt Rindermann, Ned McDonnell and Mitch Sagodi-Hogan ran the ball at the line all match and Nick Rosten darted around the Buffaloes defence from his position at hooker. Luke Platts went very close to crossing the line but it took a determined Josh McDonald to actually get the ball down for another Cooma try. Captain, Richard Bensley led the team by example and was close to crossing the line himself, but it took another forward in Jamie Clifford to put the ball down to take Cooma to a 32 point lead. Cooma’s back line soon took care of any breaks made by the Buffaloes with hard tackling by James Minards, Ben Bruce, Pete Craze, Dean Blyton and James Robinson. The final score had Cooma ahead by 36 to 16. All players stepped up to the challenge making it difficult to select the Medal winner which went to Kurt Rindermann with Luke Platts taking out the McDonald’s encouragement award. Under 15s With the under 15s only able to field 10 players this week the odds were stacked against us, however the willingness of the under 14s to back us up meant we could notch up our second win for the season against the Tuggeranong Buffaloes. Outstanding in defence were Glen Payne, Joel Smith, Jack Williams, Blake Jones, Blake Byrne and Michael Watsford. A good completion rate and the ability to keep the Buffaloes away from their scoreline meant the boys are capable of mixing it with the best. Great team work and back up play in attack and defence

from Jacob Moon, Harry Road, Eric Conley, Jack Downey, Ben Bruce, Ned McDonnell, Kurt Rindemann and Luke Johnson consolidated a great win with the scoreline in the colts favor 30 points to 14. Tries were scored by Harry Roach showing a brilliant move between Jacob ‘Dudey’ Moon and himself pay off, Blake Jones, Jack Williams x 2 and the tireless Joel Smith. With successful kicks by Dudey and Luke Johnson. Players player went to Joel Smith and Jack Williams picked up the man of the match honors. Once again thanks to Luke, Ben, Ned, Kurt and jack without your commitment we would have had to forfeit. Under 16s The boys travelled to Bungendore last Friday night to take on the Bungendore Tigers in wet and slippery conditions. Once again the boys got off to a bad start with a very concussed Campbell Hillman being assisted from the field in the opening minutes. The ball didn’t seem to bounce in our favour and Bungendore raced to an early lead. They were ahead by twelve when Chris Evans crossed from 20 metres out after eyeing a break from dummy half. Bungendore scored another converted try and we went to the break behind 20 to 4. At half time, Coach

Mark Williams praised the boy’s efforts in the trying conditions and told them to minimise their mistakes, go to the man with the ball in defence, and to just get out there and have a dig. That is precisely what the boys did and they totally dominated the play for the next 20 minutes. The resurgence was mounted via a 60m break from Jesse Jackson that scattered the opposition’s defence. A quick play of the ball saw us launch one of our best backline moves of the year that culminated in a try to Brian Cronan. Moments later, Chris Evans crossed for his second try and we were only behind by 8 points. Tim Williams and Mitchell Hynes were both denied tries in the ensuing minutes and we looked like a side within reach of victory. Unfortunately, in the final minutes of the game we were reduced to 11 players. Martin Williams sustained a serious shoulder injury and we were also without the services of Chris Evans and Andrew Jones. Bungendore raced in two more ties in the dying stages and the final score was in their 32 to 12 in their favour. Jesse Jackson picked up the “Man of the Match” award and Coach Williams congratulated the entire team on an outstanding performance. Well done boys.

Boyce team in City 2 Surf Challenge Team members of Boyce Chartered Accountants have been encouraged to dust off their joggers and begin serious training for the annual City 2 Surf race, as part of the firm’s efforts to raise funds for Dr Charlie Teo’s Cure For Life Foundation. The Cure For Life Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to saving the lives of people suffering from brain tumours through promoting advances in research and education in neurosurgery. “Our goal is two-fold – to promote a healthy team activity, and raise funds for this very worthy cause,” said Boyce Director, Julie Schofield. Last year, the accounting firm raised more than $12,000 for the Foundation by entering a team in the charity event. This year they are hoping to do even better. “Not many people are aware that brain tumours are the most common life-threatening tumours in children,”

said Julie. “So we are encouraging as many people as possible to join our fundraising effort by either participating in the event as a member of the Boyce team, or by supporting the team’s participants by making a donation.” Donations can be made on-line at www.everydayhero.com.au/boyce_ ca and are tax deductible. Those entering the event as part of the Boyce team will receive a complimentary Boyce team t-shirt and invitation to the post-race barbeque celebration. Entrants don’t need to run the course, it is quite acceptable to walk and take in the great spectacle and scenery along the way – it’s all about contributing in some way. Everest Women’s Seven Summits team to tackle Mt Kosciuszko

The nine Nepali women who will tackle the Snowy Mounatins this week.

Cats downed by determined Jets Outplayed by a far more determined team – that was the simple fact upon which the Cooma Cats can reflect following their disappointing loss to competition cellar dwellers, the Gungahlin Jets in Canberra on the weekend. The Cats went down 8-6-54 to the Jets 12-4-76. The Cats knew this return clash against the Jets – who they thrashed by over 200 points in round one of the season – was going to be a much different affair. But it was the Jets who showed they were keener for a win, being first to the ball and consistently looking for team-mates in a systematic approach to football. Cooma Cats Club President Dave Paterson said the performance on Saturday was a real let-down considering the fantastic effort the Cats made against competition leaders Goulburn the week before. “We knew this was not going to be an easy game, especially with the Jets coming off their first win for the season last week and with a lot of positive momentum. But we also had some momentum from our game last week and in the end we failed to capitalize on it as we should have,” Dave said. The first quarter saw the Jets come out fast, strong and motivated on their home ground and while they only kicked one goal, they could easily have kick another five but for inaccuracy in front of goal and the pressure created by the Cats’ backline which battled hard all day. The second quarter was a tough affair, with neither the Cats nor Jets being able to break the game open. It was hard football with both sides adding a couple of goals each. Again the Jets we inaccurate in front of goal and the teams went into half time with the Jets leading by nine points. It could have been a lot more. With the game far from over and in perfect conditions, there was great hope on the Cats’ bench that they could wrestle the lead from the Jets and take control of the match. But it wasn’t to be with the Jets coming out fast after the half-time break and kicking several unanswered goals before

the Cats managed to peg back a couple through some great work by Adam Asanovski and Stu Wood. These couple of goals put some life back into the Cats as they stayed in touch with the much more determined Jets. In the last quarter, the Jets managed to kick away and despite another couple of hard won goals through Sean Allan, the Cats failed to take the points and face some serious soul searching over the next two weeks while they have a bye. The Cats’ major weakness during the game was their inability to complete regular transitions in play from defence into attack. The number of costly turnovers through the midfield, coupled with a forward line which failed to fire, robbed the Cats of any chance to win the game. One of the positives from the game for the Cats was determined effort by the backline throughout the game. Jimmy Russell again led by example running himself into the ground. He was well supported by Dave Maxwell. Other Cats’ players to stand out during the game were Mick Johnston and Daniel Burke across the centre, Adam Asanovski, David Clyde, Greg Abrahamffy and Nick Dawes. “I know the coach Damien Asanovski kept the boys in the sheds for a while after the game and asked them to have a bit of a think about their approach to footy and where they were going from here,” Dave said. “We have a great bunch of blokes at the Cats and this loss was disappointing for everyone. But the blokes are fighters and will work hard over the coming two weeks to rebuild and refocus so we can be ready for our next game (17th of July) which is at home at Snowy Oval against the Harman Hogs,” he said. The Cooma Cats train on Tuesday and Friday evenings (the juniors on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) and everyone is welcome to come down and get involved in the club.

This week, a team of nine Nepali women will begin the first international leg of a tour that will see them climb seven of the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. The team is in the Snowy Mounatins this week. On successfully climbing all seven summits they will be setting a world record for being the largest team to do so. In May 2008 this team of inspiring young women became the most successful women’s expedition ever to Summit Mt Everest. Against all kinds of socioeconomic odds the team succeeded in doing what none thought possible. All of them reached the summit and spread the message of ‘Unity in Diversity’ from the top of the world. During that expedition the issue of climate change struck the members deeply, and subsequent travels across the country motivating students allowed them to witness

further instances of the serious effects of climate change. So with the first, and arguably the most challenging summit behind them the climbers have now taken up a mission that is both meaningful and helpful not just in Nepal but globally. The members of the team are Asha Kumari Singh, Chunu Shrestha, Maya Gurung, Ngabhang Phuti Sherpa, Nimdoma Sherpa, Pema Diki Sherpa, Pujan Acharya, Shailee Basnet and Usha Bist. The Seven Summits Eco-Action began in Australia on June 29. The team fly into Sydney and travel down to the south coast of NSW and then up to the alpine region, to climb Mt Kosciuszko/ Targangil. They will be meeting with schools, environment groups, famous climbers, environmentalists, scientists and politicians during their tour, as well as speaking at several public events in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

Cooma ladies golf Frozen greens greeted the ladies last Wednesday. That put an added challenge in front of us…the ball just kept on sliding gathering ice like a snowball. However, in the 18 hole Stableford, Lyn Last found her range and won the competition on a countback with 34 points. The ball winner was Dulcie Thistleton who was also pleased with her effort in the conditions. In the 9 hole event Ailene Smith was the winner with 19 points. Ailene’s game was also solid in the conditions. On Saturday the Monthly Medal was contested. The competition was won

by Leanne Green from Khancoban with a net 75. Balls were won by Lorraine McGregor, 77 net, and Lyn Last, 79 net. Some of our members played in the Pambula/Merimbula Ladies Open. Unfortunately the course soundly beat us but the weather and hospitality were excellent. Coming up: Wed, 7th – 18 hole stroke; Sat, 10th – 9 hole Stableford; Sun, 11th – 3BBBvPar. Should like to try your hand at golf, please feel welcome to contact us at the Golf Club. See you on the course!

Coolamatong golf Sunday’s 4BBB stableford was won by Brian and Jan O’Halloran with 47 points. The ball winners were Roy Gabriele and Jenny O’Byrne on 46 and Hans Kunz and Jenny O’Byrne on 44. Nearest the pins for the ladies on the sixth was Marcelle Burton and on the 17th Mary Obermaier. For the men Ross Thompson was the winner on the eighth and Roy Gabriele on the 12th. On Wednesday the ladies winner was Marcelle Burton on a count back from Mary Obermaier.

The ball winners were Mary and Carolyn O’Byrne, with nearest to the pin being Vickii Roarty. For the men Ben Clancy won the day with 72 nett and the runners up were Brian O’Halloran, Harry Hovasapian and Warren Regan. With the course watering system now nearing completion it’s time to come and enjoy a game of golf with the fairways well grassed.

Stefan Borsato in action in Darwin.

Borsato breaks the Ice In what was his first foray into the National Formula Ford Championship; Synergy Motorsport driver Stefan Borsato came away from the fourth round that was held recently at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway up in the Northern Territory pleased with his efforts. After having spent the past 18 months running in the NSW and Victorian State Championship competition; the Snowy Mountains (NSW) based teenager took up the opportunity presented to him by the Synergy Motorsport to test the water in the National Championship and it was an experience that he thoroughly enjoyed. “It was certainly a big step up for me from running state level competition and I was pleased to come away having achieved my goals of finishing all of my races and most importantly gaining more experience,” said the 17-year-old from Kalkite. “The National Championship is really tough in terms of the competition and also very professional in all aspects. Running with the Synergy Motorsport team was a big benefit too as it was great to be able to work with

their full-time drivers and it certainly made the transformation a lot easier.” In regards to the future, Borsato is aiming to contest further rounds of the National Championship this year in order to step full-time next year. “It’d be great to be able to contest a few more rounds this year in the National Championship but that is going to all depend on sponsorship and work commitments,” he said. “Now that I’ve sampled what it’s like to run in the National Championship I’d love to do a few more rounds this year. The goal is to do the entire National Championship next year and hopefully we can make that happen.” The fifth round of the National Formula Ford Championship is going to be held on the streets of Townsville up in North Queensland on the weekend of July 10 – 11. At this stage it is not confirmed whether or not Borsato will be on the grid. Borsato would like to say a special thanks to Synergy Motorsport, Brunelli’s Cafe and Perisher for all their ongoing support in 2010.

SuperCats battle hard in close loss to Jets A good third quarter by the visiting Gungahlin Jets saw the Snowy SuperCats Under 14 side suffer their first loss in a couple of weeks in a great display of junior AFL footy in Jindabyne on Saturday. The SuperCats went down 6-9-45 to the Jets 9-5-59 at the new home of AFL footy in the Snowy Mountains, the Station Resort Oval. SuperCats’ coach Marty Currie said that despite being down on numbers, the SuperCats put in a great effort which showed just how much the team had progressed over the past 18 months. The SuperCats only had 17 players against a full Jets’ side, but battled hard to keep in touch throughout the game. The game started well for the SuperCats who managed to create a small lead by quarter time. Key players in the first quarter were Brad Dunstan, John Hukins and Jake McGaw. Marty said getting off to a good start was critical for the SuperCats because they struggled against the Jets the last time the two sides met. The second quarter was another close one with the two sides pretty much even at the halftime break. John Hukins played another good quarter, with Jake Clarke really stepping up to

have a significant impact for the SuperCats. But it was the third quarter during which the Jets managed to kick four goals which tested the SuperCats. The SuperCats had their chances, kicking one goal, four behinds and falling off the pace. But despite being behind on the scoreboard and without anyone available on the interchange bench, the SuperCats came out hard in the final quarter and matched the Jets goal for goal. But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and the SuperCats went down by 14 points. Marty said that despite the loss, the SuperCats were still in great spirits and could be proud of how well they have played this season so far. Other good players on the day included Brandon Williams, Cooper Stevens and Luke Foster. The SuperCats now have a break for a couple of weeks during the school holidays, with their next match at Snowy Oval on July 24 – part of a double header with the Cooma Cats’ senior side later that afternoon. The Snowy SuperCats train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Snowy Oval and everyone is welcome to come down and get involved in the club.

McGregor held a slender 17 -16 lead after 16 ends and proceeded to win the next four ends to take the match 24 – 16. Seven shots on the 16th end to Joan Brotherton, Richard Nichols and Geoff Venables turned their match with Ron Wainwright, John Vincent and Leonie Snell on its head. Despite Snell picking up 5 shots on the 20th end, Venables won the game 23 – 15. Natalie Cannell, Renate Winckel and Ray Downey had a very tight tussle with Xin Cottam, Lorraine West and Jim Fletcher. The sides shared the ends with the difference being a five shot haul to Downey on the 10th end. His side ran out winners 17 -14. The finalists in the Cooma Bowling Club’s minor singles championship were decided on the weekend with Peter Marsicano again one of the stars. Marsicano will play the final – he has made the final in the last three championship events – against Jack Sajina after both recorded comfortable wins on Saturday. Marsicano had another flying start in his semi final with Don Jarvis. By the 14th end he had established a 21 – 5 lead and set an enormous challenge to Jarvis who had recorded remarkable come from behind wins in his previous two matches. Jarvis did stage a fight back in this match. He steadied and started to play better bowls to put some pressure on Marsicano. However, as he has done in other games, Marsicano stayed focused. While Jarvis was able to narrow the margin, Marsicano finished off the game to win 31 – 17. Sajina played Colin Roberson and held the upper hand throughout. Roberson stayed in touch for the first 18 ends. At this stage Sajina had a 17 - 13 advantage and while Roberson looked a chance he wasn’t playing his trademark aggressive shots with his usual confidence or success. Sajina dominated the next section of the game. He won seven of the last nine ends to race to a convincing 32 -15 win. The final between Marsicano and Sajina will be a very interesting battle! A good number of social players braved the cold on Saturday afternoon with three competitive games of triples played. Keith Goodwin, Col Cottam and Neil McGregor finished strongly to swamp Sue Cottam, Sergio Roncelli and Paul Cannell.
