hey are advocates, fundraisers, participants and bloggers, but mostly, they are a family.

“The most frightening thing about Alzheimer’s,” says Joe Wiler, “is that the vast majority of people know little or nothing about the disease or its warning signs. As a result, countless people are effectively robbed of the chance to get help.” The Wiler family is learning as they go and they’re learning together. Joe and his wife, Marty, reached out to the Alzheimer’s Association for resources, guidance and information when Joe was diagnosed at 55. With courage, energy and conviction, Joe and Marty along with their two daughters, Lesley and Jen, have dedicated themselves not only to supporting Joe, but also to becoming the faces and voices of Alzheimer’s disease—speaking out for those who cannot.

Joe’s smile is infectious as he enters the Alzheimer’s Association’s main office. He greets staff and volunteers, as well as fellow members of the Early Stage support group that he attends. Joe retired from his job as a salesman when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but he can still light up a room and “sell” — his product now is his Walk to End Alzheimer’s team.

Don’t Miss

Last year, Joe and his family put together the top-earning individual team at the Walk, raising more than $19,000 and earning national recognition. “Dad,” writes Joe and Marty’s daughter Jen on her blog, “your positive outlook and ability to lead by example is ingrained in you and I am certain you will continue to mentor me even when you can’t remember where you put the kitchen tongs.” Last spring, Joe and Marty traveled to Sacramento as advocates to tell their story Continued on back cover

Our Vision A world without Alzheimer’s disease.

R

emember the expression, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.”? Very sixties.Very simple. But life isn’t very simple these days and sorting out the parts can be a challenge. At the Alzheimer’s Association we see all the parts. There is the frightened phone call looking for advice, the spouse at a support group looking for understanding and the scientist looking for a breakthrough. They are each playing a critical part. More parts… In this issue, you will read about Joe and his remarkable family. You can learn about Jean, Alisa, Lucia and Alana – our front line team who are making a profound difference to every person they meet. You will see lists of donors – some celebrating, some grieving. We’ll tell you about scientists who are accomplishing big things and some others who are just getting warmed up! There’s a story about Sandy, a one in a million volunteer and a loving tribute to our darling friend, Mary.

Sometimes parts change. My own part has evolved from committee member to board member to board chair to interim executive director. They have each been a privilege. We have a team doing their part to find our next leader for this extraordinary organization. But even that part is no more important than yours. So, what’s your part? Is it to be among the 40,000 contacts we make each year with those who need our services? Is it to hold the hand of someone making their way through this difficult time? Is it to help with critically needed funds by attending the amazing Memories in the Making Art Auction? Is it to participate as one of our precious volunteers? Is it, simply, to write a check? The problems we face are vast and we can’t find solutions without you. It’s not just important, it’s imperative. That is how solutions begin – by asking… WHAT’S YOUR PART?

Goodbye to a Friend

2011 Alzheimer’s Association Research Grant Awards

Mary Paun had a smile that could light up a room and a laugh that echoed through the hallways. We are sad to report that this friend and volunteer to the Alzheimer’s Association passed away on August 29.

The driving force behind the Alzheimer’s Association International Grants Program is the desire to improve quality of life for people affected by Alzheimer’s. This includes achieving new insights into the basic biology of Alzheimer’s and other dementias; using these findings to identify novel approaches to risk assessment, diagnosis and treatment; improving care and support for those living with the disease; and furthering our understanding of brain health and prevention.

Mary volunteered with the San Diego/Imperial Chapter for five years, helping with office work and bringing joy to the staff during the hours she was in the office. Mary had younger onset Alzheimer’s disease, only in her 50s, but this did not stop her and her family from enjoying each day as it passed. Often, she would talk about a baseball game she had attended, an outing with her family or their most recent trip to Sacramento where they would meet with legislators to talk about the disease. When Mary was in the office, it was easy to remember to live in the moment and enjoy a quiet conversation or a raucous joke. We are touched by Mary and her family’s courage in living with Alzheimer’s disease and we are all better people for having known her.

2011 Alzheimer’s Association Young Scholar Awards

T

his year marks the fourth annual Young Scholar Awards presented by the San Diego/Imperial Chapter and funded this year by local donors Margaret Wood and Judith Wenker. These awards are designed to encourage young scientists very early in their research careers to continue pursuing their interests in the field of Alzheimer’s disease. Submissions are accepted from local undergraduate, postgraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students from a variety of disciplines including biomedical, clinical and psychosocial research.

In 2011, the Alzheimer’s Association International Research Grant Program awarded more than $12.8 million in funding to 78 investigators. Included in the 2011 funding are two San Diego-based researchers who will be recipients of New Investigator Research Grants: Tomohiro Nakamura, Ph.D. (Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute) Role of S-Nitrosylation in Alzheimer’s Disease Grant - $97,443 over two years Does nitric oxide help promote the toxic activities of beta-amyloid by hindering normal ubiquitination? Robert A. Rissman, Ph.D. (University of California San Diego) CRF Receptor Antagonism in Alzheimer’s Disease Grant - $100,000 over two years What role does the brain protein corticotropinreleasing factor (CRF) play in toxic tau and beta-amyloid production, and which genetic and drug therapies hinder Alzheimer’s-related CRF activities?

Planned Giving: Creating your Legacy

Applications are reviewed by an expert panel from the chapter’s Medical & Scientific Advisory Board. Full awards were given to Jeffrey N. Savas, Ph.D. (Scripps Research Institute) and Rahul Desikan, M.D., Ph.D. (UCSD). Savas is applying proteomic technology and mass spectrometry in mouse models to identify proteins and pathways responsible for irreversible Alzheimer’s disease progression. Desikan is combining structural neuroimaging methods with cellular and genetic markers, to look at the relationship between tau, apolipoprotein E and amyloid-ß in older individuals at risk for developing dementia.

Planned giving allows you to make a significant charitable gift to the Alzheimer’s Association without depleting your current assets. While a simple bequest is the most common planned gift, other types of planned gifts such as charitable gift annuities allow you to reduce income taxes, avoid capital gains tax, avoid estates taxes and retain payments for life.

Full awards consist of a $1,500 cash award and $500 to attend a conference. Honorable mentions were given to Lila Habib, Ph.D. (UCSD); Sonia Kim (UCSD); Grace Woodruff (UCSD); and Gali Weissberger (UCSD).

Other types of planned gifts include Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Lead Trusts, Life Insurance, and IRA charitable rollover gifts. For more information or to request an appointment with our Planned Giving Officer, please call Jody Bong at 858.205.0872.

Hearts and Minds

A

lzheimer’s disease can be overwhelming. Fortunately, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Family Consultants provide free, personalized consultations to address the needs of families and to evaluate their home situations through a program called “Care Consultation”. Our Family Consultants are experts who have a wealth of experience in providing education, personalized guidance and support in coping with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia and navigating the complex world of care options. They provide calm in a stressful situation and help bring order to a disorderly disease. “You have,” writes one client, “enlightened my heart and my mind.” Care Consultation begins with gaining a thorough understanding of the family’s situation, who lives at home, who is available to help with care, the limitations of the loved one, and the resources that are being used for care. Family Consultants also address issues such home safety, driving, legal & financial considerations, and available supportive resources. Finally, and most essentially, a care plan is outlined that includes an action plan to address all aspects of the assessment and the “what-ifs?” regarding emergency care, transportation, respite hours, help with essentials such as bathing and meals and other daily needs. The care plan may include accessing support groups, education programs, respite care, in-home care, residential care, and other professional resources in the community.

Meet our Team Jean has been with the Alzheimer’s Association for 15 years. She provides leadership to the Family Services team. In addition to Care Consultation, she also facilitates a support group for individuals with early stage dementia. From left to right: Jean Alton, Lucia Eto, Alana Kalinowski and Alisa Cox.

Lucia offers bilingual Spanish and English support and has been helping families who come to the Association for more than ten years. She provides compassion and a sense of humor to our families. Alisa has been at our chapter for more than eight years. She is an integral part of the Care Consultation team as well as our support group manager. Alana is one of the first voices you will hear when you call the Association. She has been dedicated to our Helpline for three years. She also oversees a team of experienced and trained volunteers who provide guidance and support to families in need. If you are in need of a Care Consultation, please contact our 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900.

World Alzheimer’s Day

September 21 was World Alzheimer’s Day and over 550 students at Southwest High School in El Centro gathered to walk the track and spell the word “WALK” to inspire others to get involved. Thank you to all who participated!

Volunteer of the Year On September 14, the Alzheimer’s Association honored support group facilitator Sandy Braff as our Volunteer of the Year at the Combined Health Agencies awards held at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Sandy’s commitment as a volunteer to the organization stretches more than 22 years, and she has provided vital support to countless family caregivers. Sandy says that she has learned so much about giving, accepting, aging and maintaining one’s dignity as well as the importance of helping, loving and embracing. “Getting to know the family caregivers at a deep and personal level, I’ve learned that we need to be flexible and adapt to the situations that are beyond our control, and that a sense of humor is essential,” Sandy says. The Alzheimer’s Association is proud and thankful to have the benefit of Sandy’s skills and dedication to the cause.

Stirring Memories

T

here is a nice story about these two men and these two paintings. Phil Blair and Mel Katz own Manpower and they, along with their wives, are true change agents for our community. Almost every corner of San Diego has been made better by their efforts. Even their offices have been designed to welcome a constant flow of civic meetings and gatherings. So we were especially thrilled when the Katz and Blair families attended our Memories in the Making Art Auction last year and made some significant purchases. They bought things they loved for the look and for the story behind the paintings, all part of the Memories in the Making Art program. Memories in the Making art classes are conducted at 25 facilities throughout San Diego County with more than 150 participants monthly who are suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease. At each class, instructors guide participants through projects using themes, props and conversation.

From left, Mel Katz and Phil Blair, owners of Manpower Inc., display an artwork pairing from the Memories in the Making Art Auction. The next event takes place Friday, March 23, 2012 at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park.

Through the physical act of the paint meeting the paper, creativity emerges and builds upon the artists’ imagination. Through this creative process, these individuals “speak.” It is not unusual for them to paint memories from long ago or something they can no longer find the words to express. The Art Auction showcases some remarkable art that has been juried and some of which is selected by professional artists who do a companion piece — a powerful coupling. “We loved the energy and color and life that was part of both of these works”, said Mel Katz, referring to “Hot Palms” done by Gary Provenzano from the MIM program and “The Illusion of Thought” by community artist, Cree Scudder. “They’re an inspiration!” The two pieces hang proudly in their headquarters, along with a colorful collection of palettes done by the San Diego art community. More than 50 palettes make up the rest of the auction offerings. “That event is a great chance to find some unique pieces with great heart and do some good for an organization at the same time,” said Phil Blair. “And it’s a wonderful evening!” This year the Memories in the Making Art Auction will be on Friday, March 23rd at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Grant funding I was introduced to the Alzheimer’s Association by my friend Lyn Granger who knew that I had lost my mother to Alzheimer’s disease. I was excited to get involved with the Memories in the Making Art Auction because it marries things I am passionate about, art education and therapy and advocacy for those with Alzheimer’s. It is going to be an amazing evening!
