The Aegean. It’s been written about; photographed; made into movies; crisscrossed by cruise ships. Many millions have vacationed on its well known islands, experienced the singular beauty of its sunsets, swam in its crystal clear blue waters, fell in love on its magnificent beaches. Its mention, alone, conjures up beautiful imagery. It seems we all know everything about it. And we also know that, like other desirable destinations, the Aegean’s overrun by tourists, is no longer the unspoiled, authentic, unique, welcoming destination it used to be before millions upon millions pranced through it. But, while this may well be true for parts of it, there are still places that remain largely undiscovered. Like Molyvos, and the island of Lesvos. Now, don’t get this wrong. You’ll still find here the crystal clear blue waters; the wide range of beautiful beaches; the nearly ever-present sunshine; the beautiful sunsets. After all, this is an island in the Aegean. Molyvos, though, is the place for travelers who want to experience and participate rather than to merely passively enjoy the typical, canned, artificial sameness of a tourist destination. Molyvos is a place where visitors can rest and relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area and experience the calm associated with the sun setting over the Aegean; a place to hike, climb, or bike through the lush pine forests and acres upon acres of olive groves; swim, sail and fish or scuba dive in the blue waters of the Aegean; unwind their minds, de-stress and get in touch with their inner self and the spirituality and energy of the island; attend folk festivals celebrating the island’s heritage and visit museums and monuments and learn about the island’s long history and deep culture dating back over three thousand years; visit ouzo distilleries, harvest olives with the locals, and savor the aroma of Greek coffee brewed over cinders in a kafeneio listening to stories of the island’s past and present woven by village elders. Year after year, our many friends travel from around the world to experience again the authenticity and explosion of sensations Molyvos and Lesvos, and the Greece you only think you know, have to offer. We hope to see you among them.

Το Αιγαίο. Έχουν γραφτεί τόσα γι’αυτό. Πρόκληση για τον φωτογράφο. Έμπνευση των καλλιτεχνών. Εκατοντάδες ταινίες γυρίστηκαν στα βαθυγάλαζα νερά του. Χιλιάδες κρουαζιερόπλοια το διασχίζουν απ’άκρη σ’άκρη κάθε καλοκαίρι. Εκατομμύρια τουρίστες κάνουν τις διακοπές τους στα γνωστά νησιά του. Γνωρίζουν τα μοναδικά του ηλιοβασιλέματα. Κολυμπούν στα κρυστάλλινα νερά του, ερωτεύονται στις απαράμιλλες αμμουδιές του. Το Αιγαίο! Ταυτόσημο, στο νου όλων, με την ομορφιά. Ταυτόσημο, όμως, στο νου πολλών, και με τον μαζικό, τεχνητό τουρισμό. Αυτό το Αιγαίο, που εκατομμύρια τουρίστες το πλημμυρίζουν κάθε καλοκαίρι, εδώ και χρόνια, δεν μπορεί να είναι πια ο ανέγγιχτος, αυθεντικός, μοναδικός, φιλόξενος προορισμός που ήταν κάποτε. Αλλά στο ανεξάντλητο Αιγαίο υπάρχουν τόποι, ακόμα ανεξερεύνητοι. Όπως ο Μόλυβος και το νησί της Λέσβου. Φυσικά κι εδώ θα βρείτε τα κρυστάλλινα, καταγάλανα νερά. Τις ποικίλες, πανέμορφες παραλίες. Τον πανταχού παρόντα ήλιο που κατακλύζει την μέρα. Τα πορφυρά ηλιοβασιλέματα. Άλλωστε, μιλάμε για ένα νησί στο Αιγαίο. Όμως, ο Μόλυβος είναι ένας ιδανικός τόπος για τον ταξιδιώτη που θέλει να συμμετέχει στη ζωή και όχι απλώς να απολαμβάνει παθητικά έναν κονσερβοποιημένο, στο τεχνητό ομοιόμορφο περιτύλιγμά του, τουριστικό προορισμό. Ο Μόλυβος είναι ένας διακριτός προορισμός. Μια εναλλακτική λύση διακοπών που προσφέρει ένα πλούτο εμπειριών στον ταξιδιώτη που αναζητά «αυθεντικές εμπειρίες» πέρα από «ήλιο και θάλασσα». Είναι ο τόπος όπου οι επισκέπτες μπορούν να ξεκουραστούν, να χαλαρώσουν, να απολαύσουν την ομορφιά της φύσης, να βιώσουν τη βαθειά γαλήνη του ηλιοβασιλέματος, καθώς ο ήλιος σβήνει στα νερά του Αιγαίου. Εδώ ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να κάνει πεζοπορία, αναρρίχηση ή ποδήλατο διασχίζοντας τα βουνά, τα αιωνόβια δάση από πεύκα και τα χιλιάδες στρέμματα των ελαιώνων. Να διαβεί πετρόκτιστα γεφύρια, που χτίστηκαν αιώνες πριν, πάνω απο πηγές και ποτάμια που κάποτε γυρνούσαν τους νερόμυλους που είναι διάσπαρτοι παντού. Να κολυμπήσει, να κάνει ιστιοπλοΐα, να ψαρέψει στα καταγάλανα νερά του Αιγαίου. Να κάνει καταδύσεις στη μαγεία του βυθού του. Να ηρεμήσει το μυαλό του, να χαλαρώσει από την ένταση στα ιαματικά νερά των θερμών του πηγών και να έρθει σε επαφή με τον βαθύτερο εαυτό του και την πνευματικότητα και ενέργεια του νησιού. Να παρακολουθήσει τις εκδηλώσεις που αναδεικνύουν την τρισχιλιετή πολιτιστική κληρονομιά του νησιού. Να επισκεφτεί μουσεία και μνημεία και να γνωρίσει την ιστορία του νησιού και τη βαθιά του κουλτούρα. Να επισκεφθεί αμπελώνες και οινοποιεία, αποστακτήρια ούζου, να μαζέψει ελιές με τους ντόπιους, να απολαύσει το άρωμα του ελληνικού καφέ καθώς ψήνεται στη χόβολη σε ένα παλιό καφενείο ακούγοντας τους ντόπιους να πλέκουν και να διηγούνται ιστορίες από το παρελθόν και το παρόν του νησιού. Χρόνο τον χρόνο, επισκέπτες από παλιά, πιστοί μας φίλοι πια, ταξιδεύουν από όλο τον κόσμο για να βιώσουν ξανά την έκρηξη των αισθήσεων και την αυθεντικότητα που ο Μόλυβος και η Λέσβος προσφέρουν. Ελπίζουμε να σας δούμε ανάμεσά τους.

aegean REGATTA an extremely important summer event

From August 17 to 24, an estimated 80 yachts from Greece and abroad, will cover more than 100 nautical miles The Aegean Regatta, an International open water Yacht Race taking place annually in the Aegean will take sail from Molyvos this summer. Since 2001, this major sailing race has been held in different ports - stations of the Aegean and brings together sports and culture across the Aegean Sea. The Aegean Regatta is organized by the General Secretariat of Aegean and Island Policy, in collaboration with the Offshore Committee of Greek Sailing Federation and local sailing clubs across the islands, and is supported by the Molyvos Tourism Association. This year’s organizer is the Offshore Sailing Club of Lesvos. From August 17 to 24, an estimated 80 yachts from Greece and abroad, will cover more than 100 nautical miles on a route that starts in Molyvos and continues to Limnos and Skyros and ends in Skopelos. As with previous races, the Aegean Regatta will be coupled with various events organized on the islands along its route to showcase the beauty and culture of the Aegean islands. These events, and the intense world class level of competition in the race, have made the Aegean Regatta an extremely important summer event and an annual celebration of the Aegean Sea.

Από τις 17 έως τις 24 Αυγούστου 80 ιστιοπλοϊκά σκάφη από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, θα καλύψουν μια διαδρομή άνω των 100 ναυτικών μιλίων Η Regatta του Αιγαίου, o Διεθνής Ιστιοπλοϊκός Αγώνας Ανοικτής Θαλάσσης που εδώ και 12 χρόνια ανοίγει κάθε καλοκαίρι τα πανιά του στα γαλανά νερά του Αιγαίου, ξεκίνησε το 2001. Πραγματοποιείται κάθε χρόνο σε διαφορετικά λιμάνια – σταθμούς του Αιγαίου και αποτελεί ένα ολοκληρωμένο αθλητικό και πολιτιστικό γεγονός του Αρχιπελάγους. H Aegean Regatta διοργανώνεται από τη Γενική Γραμματεία Αιγαίου και Νησιωτικής Πολιτικής, με την υποστήριξη του Φορέα Τουρισμού Μολύβου και σε συνεργασία με την Επιτροπή Ανοικτής Θαλάσσης της Ελληνικής Ιστιοπλοϊκής Ομοσπονδίας. Φέτος έχει ορισθεί διοργανωτής ο Λεσβιακός Όμιλος Ιστιοπλοΐας Ανοιχτής Θαλάσσης και συνδιοργανωτές οι ναυτικοί όμιλοι του Αιγαίου. Από τις 17 έως τις 24 Αυγούστου 80 ιστιοπλοϊκά σκάφη από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, θα καλύψουν μια διαδρομή άνω των 100 ναυτικών μιλίων, ξεκινώντας από τον Μόλυβο Λέσβου, συνεχίζοντας στο Μούδρο Λήμνου, τη Σκύρο, και καταλήγοντας στη Σκόπελο. Όπως και κάθε χρόνο, η Αegean Regatta, θα γίνει αφορμή για ποικίλες πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις στα νησιά-σταθμούς του αγώνα, εκδηλώσεις που αναδεικνύουν τις ομορφιές και τον πολιτισμό των νησιών μας. Αυτές οι εκδηλώσεις, καθώς και το υψηλό επίπεδο συναγωνισμού, έχουν αναδείξει την Aegean Regatta σε μέγιστης σημασίας καλοκαιρινό γεγονός για τα νησιά μας, σε μια αληθινή ετήσια γιορτή της θάλασσας του Αιγαίου.

AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF LOCAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, WISDOM AND ARCHITECTURE

A STROLL THROUGH MOLYVOS’ PAST AND PRESENT ΒΟΛΤΑ ΣΤΟΝ ΜΟΛΥΒΟ ΤΟΥ ΣΗΜΕΡΑ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΘΕΣ

Ένα ξάφνιασμα ομορφιάς, καθώς τον αντικρίζεις στην τελευταία στροφή του κεντρικού δρόμου, που από την Μυτιλήνη σε οδηγεί εδώ στο βορρά της Λέσβου.

Against all odds, Molyvos still remains a wonderful surprise for your senses. Provoking an explosion of sensations as you take that last turn on the road from Mytilene, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the astounding beauty of this northern edge of the island. You stop here by the side of the road and begin to feel the magic of this most picturesque village on Lesvos. Characterized as a Heritage site it is a preserved settlement since 1965, an excellent example of local craftsmanship, wisdom and architecture. An amazing amalgam of wood, stone and colours. Molyvos stands opposite Troy and the coast of Asia Minor. It is built on an ancient rock, rising gradually up towards the Byzantine fortress that crowns its top and protects it, as does the primordial mountain of Lepetymnos. Inheriting the glory of ancient Mithymna that stood in its place two thousand years ago, Molyvos presents an extraordinary range of colours depending on the angles of the sun and light that strikes it throughout the day. Enclosed courtyards with jasmine and bougainvillea, winding cobbled streets and open squares sheltered by old growth plane trees will inevitably give you a sense of the area’s history. Here you can spend your days among constant reminders of the past, from Hellenic antiquity, the Roman times, the Byzantium and the Venetian Gattelluzi era, to the post Byzantine era, the Ottoman period, the Middle Ages and even the more recent Asia Minor refugee years, a time of massive internal and external immigration.

From the ancient city of Mithymna that was located in the area behind the harbour, to the remains of the Roman Aqueduct, the Byzantine Castle and the famous post-Byzantine churches of Taxiarchis, Ag. Panteleimonas and Ag. Kiriaki, to the Ottoman Baths and the Mosque now serving as the area’s conference centre, to the public fountains and the excellent samples of 19th century architecture mansions (such as the current School of Fine Arts), to the little stores in the village’s market centre which is covered in wisteria, and to the old fishing harbour… it will all have you magically traveling to another era. You will also find the past in writing among the 13,000 books at the Historical Municipal Library of Molyvos in the market centre. And you’ll see and admire the modern side of Greece at the Municipal Art Gallery among the 200 paintings and sculptures of modern Greek artists (Halepas, Vasileiou, Mitaras, Tetsis, Rokos, Sikeliotis, Mpotsoglou, Katrakis, Varlamos, Hainis, Prekas, Tasos, Akrithakis, Cocosco etc.). Lepetymnos, the mountain overlooking Molyvos, carries its name from the Pre-Hellenic period and among its rich fauna and flora you will come across beautiful small villages with exceptional rural architecture. Vafios, known for its traditional cuisine, Argenos and Lepetymnos, known for their excellent dairy products, Sykamia, home of one of the best known Greek writers Stratis Myrivilis, and Skala Sykamia, the picturesque fishing village with the famous and most-photographed chapel “Panagia Gorgona”.

Ο Μόλυβος παραμένει, σε πείσμα των καιρών, μια έκπληξη αισθήσεων. Ένα ξάφνιασμα ομορφιάς, καθώς τον αντικρίζεις στην τελευταία στροφή του κεντρικού δρόμου, που από την Μυτιλήνη σε οδηγεί εδώ στο βορρά της Λέσβου. Σ΄αυτή την στροφή στέκεσαι για να γευτείς τη μαγεία του εικονογραφημένου οικισμού. Διατηρητέος παραδοσιακός οικισμός από το 1965, ο Μόλυβος, τόπος της πέτρας, του ξύλου και των χρωμάτων, που αποτελούν τα κυρίαρχα δομικά του υλικά, αποτελεί κορυφαίο δείγμα λαϊκής σοφίας και αρχιτεκτονικής. Αποστομωτική ομορφιά που γέννησε η ισορροπία των αναγκών του καθημερινού βίου και της αλήθειας του τοπίου. Χτισμένος αμφιθεατρικά στο βράχο του, προστατευμένος από τον γκρίζο όγκο του βυζαντινού φρουρίου και του αρχέγονου όγκου του Λεπετύμνου, αγκαλιάζει το γαλανό του Αιγαίου απέναντι από την Τροία και τα παράλια της Μικράς Ασίας. Κληρονόμος της αρχαίας Μήθυμνας, ο Μόλυβος είναι ένα χρωματιστό σχόλιο στο φως, το οποίο μεταμορφώνει τα σπίτια και το τοπίο ανάλογα με τις ώρες της μέρας. Περιδιαβαίνοντας τα δαιδαλώδη, λιθόστρωτα σοκάκια του, τις περίκλειστες πλατείες σκιασμένες από πλατάνια, τους κτιστούς αυλότοιχους των σπιτιών με τα γιασεμιά και τις βουκαμβίλιες, θα αισθανθείς το ρίγος της ιστορίας του. Αρχαιότητα, Ρωμαιοκρατία, Βυζάντιο και Γατελούζοι, μεταβυζαντινή εποχή και Οθωμανοκρατία, Μεσαίωνας, Μικρασία και προσφυγιά, εσωτερική και εξωτερική μετανάστευση, σύγχρονη εποχή, αποτυπωμένα με μοναδικό τρόπο στο σώμα του οικισμού και στον μικρό κάμπο που τον περιβάλλει.

Από τον εκτεταμένο αρχαιολογικό χώρο πίσω από το λιμάνι, όπου προσδιορίζεται το άστυ της αρχαίας πόλης, στα απομεινάρια του ρωμαϊκού υδραγωγείου, στο Βυζαντινό κάστρο και στις περίφημες μεταβυζαντινές εκκλησίες των Ταξιαρχών, του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα και της Αγίας Κυριακής, στα Οθωμανικά λουτρά και το οθωμανικό τέμενος, που σήμερα στεγάζει το συνεδριακό κέντρο του οικισμού, έως τις πετρόκτιστες μεσαιωνικές κρήνες, τα μεσαιωνικά και νεότερα αστικά αρχοντικά του τόπου, στα εμπορικά μαγαζιά της σκεπαστής από γλισίνες αγοράς και στο γραφικό λιμάνι, οι εποχές θα σε χαϊδέψουν με τρόπο μαγευτικό και νοσταλγικό. Στην Ιστορική Δημόσια Βιβλιοθήκη του, που ιδρύθηκε το 1859 και βρίσκεται στο κέντρο της αγοράς, και στους 13.000 τόμους της, ξεφυλλίζει κανείς το πνευματικό παρελθόν της πόλης. Στη Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη αποτυπώνεται το σύγχρονο εικαστικό πρόσωπο της Ελλάδας με έργα και γλυπτά σύγχρονων Ελλήνων ζωγράφων (Χαλεπάς, Βασιλείου, Μυταράς, Τέτσης, Ρόκος, Σικελιώτης, Μπότσογλου, Κατράκη, Βαρλάμος, Χαΐνης, Πρέκας, Τάσος, Ακριθάκης, Cocosco κ.α.). Στις πλαγιές του Λεπετύμνου με την προελληνική ονομασία, σ΄ ένα, αισθητικά, μοναδικό ανάγλυφο, με την αρχέγονη δασώδη βλάστηση, βρίσκονται τα χωριά του , στολίδια και μνημεία αγροτικής αρχιτεκτονικής. Ο Βαφειός με την γευστική τοπική κουζίνα του, η Άργενος και ο Λεπέτυμνος με τα εξαιρετικά γαλακτοκομικά τους προϊόντα, η Συκαμιά του Στράτη Μυριβήλη και η Σκάλα Συκαμιάς με το εκκλησάκι της Παναγιάς Γοργόνας.

Στον Μόλυβο οι άνθρωποι, ναυτικοί και ταξιδευτές, γεωργοί, κτηνοτρόφοι και ψαράδες, έμποροι και τεχνίτες, επιστήμονες και καλλιτέχνες είχαν από παλιά, τον δικό τους ήμερο ρυθμό ζωής. Με τη γενναιοδωρία και τη σοφία της Ανατολής και την ανεκτικότητα της Δύσης στους καθημερινούς τους τρόπους, είναι έως σήμερα η ζωντανή ψυχή του Μολύβου. Sailors and travelers have lived here in Molyvos from ancient times to the present day. Farmers, cattlemen and fishermen, merchants and craftsmen all have their place in the local economy. Bringing together the generosity and the wisdom of the East and the West, they symbolize the spirit of Molyvos. You can still meet the shipwright mending fishing boats in the harbor, the fishermen heading out to sea by dawn, the wood and mason craftsmen, the weavers, ceramists, icon-painters and jewelry makers. They can all indulge you into a world of local creativity and expression. And in local fairs and traditional celebrations, often with roots in paganism as worshipping customs from antiquity, folk musicians and singers and the sounds of their traditional instruments, the “santouri” and “laouto”, will also carry you back in time.

In Molyvos space diffuses and time stands still. It becomes a time of fairytales. It humanizes and transforms you. Molyvos will always invite you to live in the moment and to be reborn in its light.

Στον Μόλυβο ο χρόνος διαχέεται. Ο χρόνος δεν υπάρχει. Γίνεται χρόνος παραμυθιού. Σε αλλάζει και σε εξανθρωπίζει. Ο Μόλυβος πάντα σε καλεί να ζήσεις τη μέρα σου και να αναγεννηθείς ξανά και ξανά στο φως.

MY LIFE IN MOLYVOS

I was born and raised in Molyvos. I consciously chose to spend my life here in my birthplace, forever charmed by wood, stone and colour. Here, building always meant merging structures with the land and the landscape in a collaborative manner. An evolving landscape shaped by history from 6.000 BC to today. Each and every cell of my physical existence carries within it parts of everyone who’ve ever lived their own adventure here. A lover of beauty and its truth who struggles to balance the weight of the great responsibility towards her birthplace and its future generations. Every time I return to Lesvos and my birthplace, the feeling of becoming human again surges through the archipelago, the Other Aegean of the North. Once more it’s like I’m on a pilgrimage to man’s roots: the aroma of olive and pin;, the heady smells of ouzo, of freshly baked bread, of sardines and octopus on charcoal sprinkled with crispy salt next to the beach. The violent burst of springtime and the fruitful autumns of the Aeolian land. The brightness of daylight, the copper coloured skies of Homer’s sunsets and the drawn-out rose-scented nights. When the starry night descends on Molyvos it’s an invitation to a conscious participation in immortality. Here in my blessed homeland everything is made with wisdom and skill. It reminds me that when we step away from our daily routines, when we avoid unnecessary miseries, it’s a service to our virtue to remember the real troubles of this world: death, betrayal, old age, incurable illness, unrequited love, all the unhappiness brought to us by the divine natural order. In the maze-like alleys of my home town, the human miracle still works. It commands me to look generously at human truth straight in the eyes and to take responsibility for preserving the beauty of this world. ΜΟΛΥΒΟΣ: ΕΜΠΕΙΡΙΑ ΖΩΗΣ Γεννήθηκα στον Μόλυβο. Επέλεξα να κτίσω την ζωή μου εδώ στον γενέθλιο τόπο. Στην γοητεία της πέτρας, του ξύλου και των χρωμάτων. Στον τόπο μου, χτίζω σήμαινε, από πάντα, συνεργάζομαι με τη γη και το τοπίο. Ένα τοπίο που διαμόρφωσαν τα ιστορικά συναπαντήματα από το 6000 π.Χ μέχρι σήμερα. Στο κύτταρό μου κουβαλώ όλα τα πλάσματα που έζησαν εδώ την ανθρώπινη περιπέτεια. Μια ερασιτέχνις της ομορφιάς και της αλήθειας που ζυγίζει την ύπαρξή της με το βάρος μιας μεγάλης ευθύνης απέναντι στον τόπο και στις αυριανές γενιές. cmyk Κάθε φορά 0, 60, 15,που 0 επιστρέφω από ταξίδια πίσω στην Λέσβο και στην γενέθλια γη το αίσθημα της επιστροφής στα ανθρώπινα σκίζει το αρχιπέλαγος, αυτό το Άλλο Αιγαίο του Βορρά. Σαν να προστρέχω για πολλοστή φορά σε ένα προσκύνημα στις καταβολές του ανθρώπου. Στο άρωμα της ελιάς και του πεύκου. Στην μυρουδιά του ούζου, του φρεσκοψημένου ψωμιού, της ψημένης σαρδέλας με το κριτσανιστό αλάτι και του χταποδιού στα κάρβουνα δίπλα στη θάλασσα. Στην βίαια εκρηκτική άνοιξη, στα καρπερά φθινόπωρα της αιολικής γης. Στην λάμψη του καταμεσήμερου, στον χάλκινο ουρανό του Ομήρου το ηλιοβασίλεμα, στα μακρόσυρτα τριανταφυλλιά βράδυα. Όταν η έναστρη νύχτα πέφτει στον Μόλυβο είναι μια πρόσκληση σε μια συνειδητή συμμετοχή στην αθανασία.

Εδώ στον ευλογημένο τόπο μου, όλα συνταγμένα με σοφία και μαστοριά, μου θυμίζουν καθημερινά πως όταν ελαφρύνουμε όσο είναι δυνατόν τις άχρηστες δουλείες, όταν αποφύγουμε τις δυστυχίες που δεν είναι απαραίτητες, υπάρχει πάντα, για να κρατάει ζωντανή την αρετή μας, η μακριά σειρά των πραγματικών δεινών, ο θάνατος, cmyk οι αρρώστιες δίχως γιατριά, ο τα γερατιά, έρωτας δίχως η προδομένη 0, 67, 57,ανταπόκριση, 0 φιλία, όλες οι δυστυχίες που οφείλονται στη θεϊκή φύση των πραγμάτων.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of Ancient Mithymna dating from the PostGeometric, Archaic, Hellenistic, and Roman eras between the 8 th and 1 st centuries BC. The excavation sites leaflet for the surrounding area of Molyvos is available at the Molyvos Tourism Association’s office, Monday to Friday, 10:00 - 14:00. When Mrs. Kaldi, the vice-chancellor of the Ionian University, proposed that I organize the 1 st Guitar Summer Academy in Molyvos, I accepted with pleasure. After all, ancient Mithymna was home to Arion, the Dionysiac poet and kitharode and inventor of the dithyramb, so there was some historical precedent in this. Though initially somewhat hesitant about the way the Summer Academy might be accepted by the local community, I was pleasantly surprised to find Arion’s compatriots welcoming and excited and willing to contribute to the success of the project. Their organization and cooperation was a pleasantly discordant note to the usual – uncooperativetune in Greece in our days, something that lead to the success of the whole event. And, of course, proof of this success is the 2 nd such event planned for this summer in Molyvos. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Όταν η αντιπρύτανης του Ιονίου πανεπιστημίου κ. Καλδή, μετά από μια αρχική ιδέα του κ. Αριστείδη Γιαπαλή, μου πρότεινε να επιμεληθώ την «Α΄ Θερινή Ακαδημία κιθάρας», ως παράρτημα της Θερινής Ακαδημίας του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου, στον Μόλυβο της Λέσβου το 2012, δέχθηκα με χαρά. Άλλωστε, η αρχαία Μήθυμνα δηλαδή ο σημερινός Μόλυβος, είναι η πατρίδα του πρώτου κιθαρωδού Αρίωνα του εφευρέτη του διθυράμβου. Έτσι, ξεκίνησα την προετοιμασία, με μια επιφύλαξη στο βάθος του μυαλού μου για την υποδοχή που θα είχε η πρωτοβουλία αυτή απο την τοπική κοινωνία. Προς μεγάλη μου έκπληξη και με αφάνταστη χαρά, οι συντοπίτες του Αρίωνα ήταν έτοιμοι να μας υποδεχτούν: μας καλωσόρισαν φιλόξενα και χωρίς πολλές επεξηγήσεις ανέλαβαν δράση. Η οργάνωσή τους, το πνεύμα συνεργασίας και η ανιδιοτελής φιλοξενία τους, ήταν μια ευχάριστη παραφωνία σε σχέση με τη νοοτροπία που κυριαρχεί στη χώρα μας, οδηγώντας στην επιτυχία της διοργάνωσης. Η καλύτερη απόδειξη του θετικού αυτού αποτελέσματος είναι, ότι όλοι μας, διοργανωτές και σπουδαστές επιστρέφουμε και αυτό το καλοκαίρι στον γοητευτικό Μόλυβο, για δουλειά αλλά και για διακοπές!

CHARMING EXCURSIONS Experience the area’s culture, nature, architecture and traditions In the wider Molyvos area, within the area that was ancient province of Mithymna, the extensive history and rich culture of the generations past history has left its mark all over: ancient temples, stone bridges, Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches and monasteries, olive presses, modern museums; protected heritage settlements built with stone handcarved by master masons, jewels of local handicraft and traditional architecture.

Our journey on the western peninsula ends at the Petrified Forest (10), an area of 16,600 hectares of great ecological value that’s listed among the Natura 2000 areas for natural protection in the European Union and is included in Unesco’s Global Geoparks Network since 2004.

Μόλυβος Molyvos

Journeying to the central and northeastern part of the wider region of Molyvos we will certainly visit the twin monasteries of the early 16 th century: The Nunnery of the Virgin Mirsiniotissa and the Limonos Monastery (11). Built in 1527 AD these were significant places of worship and education during the years of the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The library at Limonos Monastery is particularly worthwhile as it’s collections of manuscripts is second only to those held at Mount Athos.

“Kremasti” Bridge

In nearby Petra, the church of Panagia (1) on the imposing rock that overlooks the area and the elegant mansion of “Vareltzidena” mark the social and religious development of the site in the past. Crossing the stone-built, terracottatiled villages to the west of the island - Skoutaro (2), Filia (3), Skalochori, Anemotia (4) – with the 17 th century churches and impressive mansions we reach the heritage site of Vatousa (5) an architectural jewel built by local mason craftsmen. In Chydira, the George Iakovidis Digital Art Museum (6) is evolving into a unique art destination exhibiting the rich collection of paintings by this great representative of the German “academic naturalism” school, the so-called “Munich School”. From ancient Antissa, birthplace of the musician and poet Terpander, and its seaside castle (7) we reach the Ypsilou Monastery (8), a typical example of ecclesiastical architecture of the 16 th century that holds a small but distinguished collection of religious relics and documents and Eresos (9), home of the poet Sappho and the father of modern philosophy and ecology, Theophrastus and its small archaeological museum. The acropolis of Eresos, the early Christian Basilica of Agios Andreas, Perivolis and Pithariou monasteries and the Sigri castle are some of the most important monuments of this area.

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is a petrified forest ecosystem made up of hundreds of lying and standing fossilized tree trunks which were covered by volcanic material, petrified in place 20 million years ago and can be characterized as a window on the geohistoric development of the Aegean. In Agia Paraskevi,one of the most beautiful small villages on the island, the 14 th century arched, stone-built bridge of “Kremasti” (12) is a famous example of local traditional architecture, while the 6 th century temple of Apollo of Napeos in Klopedi (13) is one of the greatest examples of Lesbos’ archaic architecture. Continuing on this journey we’ll encounter the Sanctuary Temple of Meson (14), the religious center of all Lesvos in antiquity, dedicated to Hera, Zeus and Dionysus. In addition to worship, the temple hosted important court hearings and women’s pageants celebrating their p hysical and spiritual beauty. The Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production (15) narrates the olive oil tradition of the island. Housed in the large 19 th century community olive press building is the “machine of the people” as it was called then. Our journey ends in Mantamado, home of the renowned Monastery of Taxiarchis (16). At this post-Byzantine 18 th century monastery you’ll find the famous and unique in the Orthodox Christian world likeness of Archangel Michael, said to have been shaped with the blood that wet the monastery’s soil when monks were brutally slaughtered by the Ottomans. The monastery is the site of a national pilgrimage and festival that takes place on Myrrh-bearers’ Sunday. Mantamados is also home to the Pottery Museum (17) and a large collection of handicrafts shops that hand-make pottery is still flourishing in the area.

Από την Άντισσα και το αρχαίο παραλιακό της κάστρο (7) φτάνουμε στην Ιερά Μονή Υψηλού (8), χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα εκκλησιαστικής αρχιτεκτονικής του 16 ου αιώνα με μικρή αλλά εκλεκτή συλλογή εκκλησιαστικών κειμηλίων και εντύπων, και τέλος στην Ερεσό (9) πατρίδα της ποιήτριας Σαπφούς και του πατέρα της μοντέρνας φιλοσοφίας και οικολογίας Θεόφραστου όπου λειτουργεί μικρό αρχαιολογικό μουσείο.

Στο τέρμα της δυτικής πολιτιστικής μας διαδρομής μπαίνουμε στην εντυπωσιακή επικράτεια του Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου με το ομώνυμο Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου (10). Η περιοχή αποτελεί ένα παράθυρο στην γεωιστορική εξέλιξη της περιοχής του Αιγαίου τα τελευταία 20 εκατομμύρια χρόνια, ένα διατηρητέο φυσικό μνημείο με παγκόσμια αναγνώριση που ανήκει στο Ευρωπαϊκο Δίκτυο Γεωπάρκων και στο Παγκόσμιο Δίκτυο Γεωπάρκων της UNESCO.

Κρεμαστής (12) λιθόκτιστη και τοξωτή, είναι περίφημο δείγμα της ντόπιας λαϊκής αρχιτεκτονικής από τον 14 ο αιώνα. Ο Ιερός Ναός Κλοπεδής (13), ναός του Ναπαίου Απόλλωνα του 6 ου π.Χ. αιώνα αποτελεί ένα από τα σημαντικότερα δείγματα αρχαϊκής αρχιτεκτονικής της Λέσβου. Και τέλος συναντάμε το Ιερό του Μέσου (14)το μεγάλο λατρευτικό κέντρο όλων των Λεσβίων στην αρχαιότητα, αφιερωμένο στην Ήρα, τον Δία και τον Διόνυσο. Εδώ εκτός από τις λατρευτικές τελετές εκδικάζονταν μεγάλες δικαστικές υποθέσεις αλλά και διοργανώνονταν καλλιστεία γυναικών ομορφιάς και πνεύματος. Στην Αγία Παρακευή, ένα από τα πιο όμορφα αρχοντοχώρια, το Μουσείο Βιομηχανικής Ελαιουργίας (15) διηγείται την ελαιουργική παράδοση του νησιού. Στεγάζεται στο μεγάλο κοινοτικό ελαιοτριβείο της πόλης, του 19 ου αιώνα, με την μηχανή του κοινού, όπως ονομαζόταν παλαιά.

Παμμεγίστων Ταξιαρχών (16), ένα μεταβυζαντινό μοναστήρι του τέλους του 18 ου αιώνα με την περίφημη γλυπτή εικόνα του αρχάγγελου Μιχαήλ, μοναδική στον ορθόδοξο χριστιανικό κόσμο, και πόλος έλξης για προσκυνητές. Στον Μανταμάδο θα μάθουμε ακόμα την ιστορία της κεραμοπλαστικής και αγγειοπλαστικής παράδοσης της Λέσβου τόσο στο Μουσείο Κεραμοπλαστικής (17) του Μανταμάδου όσο και στις πολλές βιοτεχνίες χειροποίητων κεραμικών που ανθούν και σήμερα εκεί.

The “Vareltzidena” Mansion Διασχίζοντας τα χωριά προς τα δυτικά του νησιού, Σκουτάρο (2), Φίλια (3), Σκαλοχώρι, Ανεμώτια (4) με τις εκκλησιές και τα ξωκλήσια του 17 ου αιώνα και τα πετρόκτιστα αρχοντικά τους, φτάνουμε στην διατηρητέα Βατούσα (5) ένα αρχιτεκτονικό κόσμημα λαϊκών μαστόρων. Στα Χύδηρα, το Ψηφιακό Μουσείο Γεώργιος Ιακωβίδης (6) εξελίσσεται σε ένα εικαστικό προορισμό με το πλούσιο ζωγραφικό έργο του Γιώργου Ιακωβίδη, μεγάλου εκπροσώπου του γερμανικού ακαδημαϊκού νατουραλισμού της λεγόμενης Σχολής του Μονάχου.

Από την αντίθετη πλευρά στο κεντρικό και Β.Α. κομμάτι της ευρύτερης περιοχής του Μολύβου, θα σταματήσουμε ασφαλώς στα δίδυμα μοναστήρια των αρχών του 16 ου αιώνα: τη γυναικεία Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Μυρσινιωτίσσης και την ανδρική Ιερά Μονή Λειμώνος (11). Χτισμένα στα 1527 μ.Χ. τόποι λατρείας αλλά και εκπαίδευσης στα χρόνια της οθωμανοκρατίας. Η βιβλιοθήκη της Μονής Λειμώνος θεωρείται δεύτερη ως προς τον πλούτο και τη σημασία των χειρογράφων, μετά το Άγιο Όρος.

Keep an eye out for various “kasseri”, gruyere, feta, “touloumotyri”, and its trademark “ladotyri”, many of which are with a "Protected Designation of Origin" (PDO).

The unique local varieties of fish and shellfish, such as scallops ("xtenia") and baby sardines were first studied and categorized by Aristotle in the Kalloni Bay. Sour frumenty (“trahanas”), stands out among the many types of pasta produced and consumed on the island. Trahanas is not only eaten in a soup as is traditionally consumed elsewhere in Greece, it is also worked by hand into the shape of a cup, filled with cheese and tomatoes and baked in the oven. There are more than 11 million olive trees on Lesvos and the olive oil produced on the island is of extraordinary quality and has won numerous awards worldwide. There are many unique delicacies that stand out in Lesvos cuisine: The “sfougato” (omelette with zucchini), “sougania” (stuffed onions), chickpeas with mutton, “ouzatoi” meatballs (with ouzo), and “giouzlemedes” (fried cheese pies). The ultimate island experience? A group of friends, fresh sardines from Kalloni bay salted with coarse sea salt and left to marinate for a few hours - the perfect accompaniment for a glass of locally produced ouzo.

Here in Lesvos you can still meet folks who’ll talk about cooking with the same respect they reserve for discussions of their religious faith. And local women who’ve spent a life cooking will tell you that it all starts with the meticulous search for the purest and freshest ingredients. Ingredients are scrupulously selected so the meal is a literal ode to joy and cordiality. Every meal and every dish captures the art involved in its preparation and presentation bearing witness to the philosophy and the aesthetic of the cook, as well as the culinary culture of its birthplace and the way it influenced the cuisine and its flavors. The local culinary culture is centered on the attention to detail that doesn’t necessarily translate into expensive meals and luxurious restaurants or require novel and complex recipes. Εδώ στην Λέσβο μπορείς και σήμερα να συναντήσεις ανθρώπους που θα σου μιλήσουν για την μαγειρική με τον ίδιο σεβασμό που θα μιλούσαν για την θρησκεία τους. Όταν μιλάς με γυναίκες που πέρασαν τη ζωή τους στην κουζίνα θα σου πουν όλες πως η μαγειρική ξεκινά πάντα με τη σχολαστική αναζήτηση των αγνών υλικών. Κι ύστερα έρχεται το μαγείρεμα. Ολα τα υλικά επιλέγονται ευλαβικά ώστε το γεύμα ή το δείπνο να είναι μια ωδή στην εγκαρδιότητα και στην χαρά. Κάθε φαγητό και κάθε πιάτο χρειάζεται τη δική του τέχνη στο μαγείρεμα και στην παρουσίαση, ώστε να μαρτυρά τη φιλοσοφία και το αισθητικό σύμπαν εκείνου που το μαγείρεψε, αλλά και τον γαστριμαργικό πολιτισμό του τόπου που το γέννησε και τον τρόπο που αυτός επέδρασε στην κουζίνα και στις γεύσεις. Η μεγάλη φιλοσοφία της τοπικής κουζίνας είναι η προσπάθεια να λέμε για το φαγητό αυτό που τείνει να λησμονηθεί: πως η μαγειρική επιμέλεια δεν απαιτεί πάντα πολλά χρήματα και πολυτελή εστιατόρια ή την εφεύρεση νέων συνταγών, αλλά την διάθεση να βλέπουμε τη ζωή ως μοναδικό έργο τέχνης. Mytilene Oven Roasted, Stuffed Lamb Γεμιστό αρνί από τη Μυτιλήνη Ingredients (5-6 servings): The torso of a lamb without the head or legs, the juice of 1 lemon, salt & pepper to taste, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 2 heaping tablespoons cooking grease, 2 cups of rice, 1/2 the lamb’s liver chopped, 2 large onions diced, 1 medium-sized potato cubed, 2 slices of bread without the crust, cubed, 2 level tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons black currants, 2 tablespoons pine nuts, parsley finely chopped, mustard.

Stuffed Zucchini Flowers Ingredients: 25-30 zucchini flowers, 250 grams feta cheese, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup ricotta cheese, salt, pepper, oil for frying. For the batter: 2 cups flour, 1 cup water, 1 egg and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Preparation: Prepare and wash the zucchini flowers. Mash the feta cheese into a bowl, add the ricotta, the 2 eggs and some pepper. Mix well. Fill each zucchini flower with one spoonful of the mix, dip one by one into the batter and fry in hot oil both sides ‘till golden brown.

Υλικά: Ο κορμός ενός αρνιού χωρίς το κεφάλι ή τα πόδια, ο χυμός ενός λεμονιού, αλάτι και πιπέρι, 1 κουταλιά ελαιόλαδο, 2 γεμάτες κουταλιές μαγειρικό λίπος, 2 φλιτζάνια ρύζι, μισό από το συκώτι του αρνιού κομμένο σε μικρά κομμάτια, 2 μεγάλα κρεμμύδια κομμένα σε κυβάκια, 1 μέτρια πατάτα κομμένη σε κύβους, 2 φέτες ψωμί χωρίς την κόρα του κομμένο σε κύβους, 2 κοφτές κουταλιές ζάχαρη, 2 κουταλιές μαύρη σταφίδα, 2 κουταλιές κουκουνάρι, μαϊντανός Preparation: ψιλοκομμένος, μουστάρδα. Βουτήξτε τα ένα-ένα μέσα στο χυλό και τηγανίστε τα σε καφτό λάδι κι από τις δυο πλευρές μέχρι να ροδίζουν.

ΠΕΡΙΠΑΤΗΤΙΚΕΣ και ΠΟΔΗΛΑΤΙΚΕΣ ΔΙΑΔΡΟΜΕΣ WETLANDS, PINE FORESTS, OLIVE GROVES... Lesvos is home to a multitude of rare species of birds and plants and part of the Natura 2000 EU-wide network of nature protection areas. On Lesvos you’ll find wetlands, pine forests, olive groves, natural springs and waterfalls, medieval castles, roman aqueducts and thousand year old monasteries, picturesque walking paths and cobbled trails laid by monks hundreds of years ago, archaeological monuments and a petrified forest that’s unique in the world. One way to really discover Lesvos is to walk its paths. There are many well marked and groomed walking trails all around Molyvos and the northwestern area of the island and all promise a unique experience. Start by visiting the castle in Molyvos, admire the magnificent sunset or, if you’re a bit more adventurous, choose one of the more challenging trails on the Lepetymnos mountain. Walk from Petra toward Molyvos or Vafios across the “limnodexameni” w e t l a n d s a re a . T h e w a l k i n g trails here are easy with low gradients. C ro s s i n g t h ro u g h dense olive groves you’ll reach Vafios, a charming village on the wester n slopes of Lepetymnos mountain, and if you time it just right you’ll encounter one of the most astonishing sunsets. The “limnodexameni” (wet land area) is a bird watching attraction in the Molyvos area, so you’ll have the opportunity to observe and photograph a wide variety of rare bird species. More skilled walkers looking for a bit more challenge can walk to Stypsi or Vafios, or the peak of Mount Lepetymnos. These trails cross through the “Lagos” region, a magnificent wide area with rich vegetation, old growth plane trees and water fountain ruins. Another area you’ll encountered on these trails is the “Limnes” region where you’ll encounter old oak woods, water tanks (“giolia”) built to collect rainwater, and outdoor stone threshing floors where farmers would thresh the grain harvest and then winnow it. The end of this trail leads to the peak of Mount Lepetymnos and the church of Profitis Ilias built on top of steep rocks. The panoramic view from here is magnificent and stretches across most of the island and to the Turkish coast.

For those interested in unspoiled natural beauty, the path around the valley of Ligona, is the ideal choice for you. Ligona is a beautiful valley, with rich flora and fauna, a multitude of streams and springs and old watermills used until the mid 1940s to grind wheat into flour for the nearby villages. Water would drop onto the mill paddles of the waterwheel setting the wheel in motion, and would then go on to the next mill through stone purpose-built ditches. The climbing walk from Ligona to Petri or Vafios also offer magnificent views of Petra and Molyvos. You can also wander around the small churches of the Molyvos region, starting from the picturesque church of Agios Ioannis and continue to Agia Rodotou, enjoying the breathtaking views of Molyvos, Petra and the Turkish coastline across the water. The area around Sykamia offers t w o m o re m a g n i f i c e n t w a l k i n g trails. Starting from Agia Anna and moving through Agios Konstantinos to Sykamia, the walker follows the signposts that lead to the small church of Agios Konstantinos and the Platoyannis olive press. The s t o n e - b u i l t p a t h s t a r t i n g f ro m Sykamia leads up to Kria Vrisi where three water streams can be found. Continuing eastwards, the walker reaches the Agia Anna cemetery, located on the northeast of the Lepetymnos village. For those who love cycling, there is a dense network of routes that provide access to incredible scenery of green hills, sandy beaches, old growth plane trees (Platanus Orientalis), and ancient springs. You can choose the easy paved roads and graded paths or the more challenging routes through rocky mountain sides and gorges. Either way, you’re bound to be delighted.

Ξεκίνησε με την πιο απλή βόλτα ως το κάστρο του Μολύβου, για να θαυμάσεις την μαγευτική δύση του ήλιου, και ακολούθησε την πιο απαιτητική διαδρομή για να γνωρίσεις την κρυμμένη ομορφιά αυτού του τόπου. Αρωματικά φυτά. Εξωκλήσια, πλακόστρωτα, καλντερίμια, ντάμια και υδραγωγεία. Με αφετηρία την Πέτρα, θα φτάσεις ως τον Μόλυβο και τον Βαφειό, μέσω της Λιμνοδεξαμενής. Οι διαδροµές αυτές είναι ιδανικές για όσους προτιµούν τις ήπιες κλίσεις στην πεζοπορία. Διασχίζοντας τους πυκνούς ελαιώνες που βρίσκονται στην περιοχή, θα φτάσεις ως τον Βαφειό, στις δυτικές πλαγιές του Λεπέτυµνου, και θα αντικρίσεις ένα από τα ωραιότερα ηλιοβασιλέματα στη Λέσβο. Στην Λιµνοδεξαµενή θα έχεις την ευκαιρία να παρατηρήσεις, να καταγράψεις και να φωτογραφίσεις σπάνια είδη πουλιών, που δύσκολα θα συναντήσεις σε άλλα μέρη. Οι πιο απαιτητικοί περιπατητές μπορούν να επιλέξουν ως προορισµό τους οικισµούς της Στύψης, του Βαφειού, αλλά και την κορυφή του Λεπέτυµνου. Κομβικά σημεία για αυτές τις διαδρομές είναι η περιοχή «Λαγός», ένα καταπληκτικό «άνοιγµα» από ρεµατιές πλούσιες σε βλάστηση, µε γέρικα πλατάνια και χαλάσµατα από παλιές βρύσες, καθώς και η περιοχή «Λίμνες» με τα πέτρινα αλώνια και τα χτιστά «γκιόλια» (δεξαμενές) που µαζεύουν το νερό της βροχής. Το τέρμα

του μονοπατιού οδηγεί στην κορυφή του Λεπέτυµνου, στο ξωκλήσι του Προφήτη Ηλία, που βρίσκεται πάνω σε απότοµα βράχια. Η θέα είναι καταπληκτική, και περιλαμβάνει σχεδόν όλο το νησί καθώς και τµήµα των Μικρασιατικών ακτών. Για όσους λατρεύουν το φυσικό παρθένο περιβάλλον, η διαδρομή γύρω από τον κάμπο της Λιγώνας είναι η ιδανική επιλογή. Πανέμορφη κοιλάδα, με πλούσια χλωρίδα και πανίδα, με πηγές και υδρόμυλους που πριν χρόνια (ως το 1946) λειτουργούσαν για να αλέθουν το σιτάρι από τα γύρω χωριά. Το νερό της πηγής, που βρίσκονταν ψηλά στον βράχο, έθετε σε κίνηση τις φτερωτές των µύλων και µέσα από κτιστά αυλάκια πήγαινε από τον ένα µύλο στον άλλο. H ανηφορική διαδροµή από τη Λιγώνα προς το Πετρί ή τον Βαφειό προσφέρει εξαιρετική θέα στην Πέτρα και τον Μόλυβο. Η περιπλάνηση γύρω από τα εξωκλήσια της περιοχής, μπορεί να γίνει με αφετηρία το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Ιωάννη, προς την Αγία Ροδοτού, αγναντεύοντας την καταπληκτική θέα προς τον Μόλυβο, την Πέτρα και τη γειτονική Τουρκία. Η περιοχή της Συκαμιάς προσφέρει δύο ακόμα υπέροχες πεζοπορικές διαδρομές. Με αφετηρία την Αγία Άννα, μέσω του Αγίου Κωνσταντίνου προς Συκαμιά, ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να ακολουθήσει τα σήματα της διαδρομής για να οδηγηθεί στο εξωκλήσι του Αγίου και στο ελαιοτριβείο του Πλατογιάννη. Με αφετηρία την Συκαμιά, και ακολουθώντας το λιθόστρωτο μονοπάτι, ο περιπατητής θα φτάσει στην περιοχή της Κρύας Βρύσης με τα τρία ρέματα. Στη συνέχεια, με ανατολική κατεύθυνση, θα οδηγηθεί στο νεκροταφείο της Αγίας Άννας στη Β.Α. πλευρά του χωριού Λεπέτυμνος. Για όσους λατρεύουν το ποδήλατο, υπάρχει ένα πυκνό δίκτυο διαδρομών με απίστευτες εναλλαγές τοπίων από καταπράσινους λόφους, αμμώδεις ακτές, γεροπλατάνια και πηγές. Μπορείς να επιλέξεις από τους πιο ήπιους ασφαλτόδρομους και βατά μονοπάτια έως τις πέτρινες βουνοπλαγιές, ρεματιές και τις πλέον απαιτητικές διαδρομές.

A few years ago we were fortunate enough to be asked to devise a programme of walks around Molyvos on the Greek island of Lesvos. Our initial reaction was not good. “What is there here for us?” we thought. We are now quite ashamed of that initial thought. We have discovered an area that gives us delightful walks, new sights, smells, sounds, tastes and experiences each time we visit. A place where the air itself seems to contain a secret nectar and from where we return physically and mentally refreshed. The local people are genuinely welcoming and, having visited Molyvos a few times, we are greeted like old friends. But don’t worry if you have never visited before, even first-time visitors are welcomed and made to feel like they’ve just come home. Lesvos is wonderfully free of the trappings of mass tourism and Molyvos is an ideal base for walking journeys around the island. It’s crowned by a hill-top castle and its cobbled streets are shaded by a profusion of wisteria. Molyvos boasts its own easily visited archaeological sites, a beautiful harbor and a fine choice restaurants, many with stunning views and all serving excellent food combining the very best of Greek and Turkish cuisine. I have walked in groups and with

my husband but I also feel perfectly safe walking by myself on the paths around Molyvos. On one occasion I even had a friendly dog accompany me until he was satisfied I knew where I was going! We love the variety of paths. One day we might decide to visit the ancient monasteries, walking along cobbled paths laid by monks we stop at Moni Limonos for lunch. After greeting Rula and catching up on news she serves Jim home-made spinach pies and freshly squeezed orange juice and prepares for me a Greek salad dressed with the olive oil she has pressed herself. After lunch the path winds downhill and Jim and I each try to be the first to catch sight of terrapins, dragon flies and frogs. The stunning view over the Bay of Kalloni is one of our favourites and we often muse about Aristotle sitting there on the seashore with his pupils. Another favourite walk is the Valley of the Mills. Looking at the old water mills we can just imagine the farmers trudging up the paths with sacks of corn on their backs. The trees and thick vegetation are a delightful contrast to the cobbled monastery paths. Lunch, however, is just as good. Nicolas, at Achilles Well, always greets me with a great big bear hug and Jim with much hand shaking – before bringing out plates of freshly cooked local delicacies! After lunch we stroll along the sandy path with views of the sea, the Church on the Rock at Petra and the fertile fields in the valley. Sometimes, when we’re really lucky, we’ll catch sight of tadpoles swimming around in puddles!

A really special treat is to jump into the clear blue waters of the Aegean at the end – or sometimes in the middle - of a walk. If you know where to go (and locals will be pleased to tell you, too), you can swim through the hot springs that rise into the sea. Our favourite beach lies to the east of Molyvos just past tiny hamlet of Eftalou. Here you can enjoy the hot springs and also marvel at the stunning patterns in the vertical rocks. For us, walking around Molyvos offers everything we could wish for. During the day we enjoy beautiful and varied views, a sense of peace, feeling close to nature, and visiting traditional villages for a lunch prepared with the best and freshest local produce. At the end of a walk we can swim and in the evenings there are the bars and restaurants of Molyvos. If you are lucky you may even catch Fortis providing songs and music for dancing at the weekly Greek Night held at the Triena. We’re told there are now new paths - with brand new signage to guide walkers and cyclists - all around Molyvos. We can’t wait to get back. It felt like the best thing in the world to conquer a majestic Lakeland peak, enjoy a beer at the end of the day or arrive at a high alpine hut to be refreshed by an “apfelschorle”. BIRDING HEAVEN

ΚΟΡΥΦΑΙΟΣ ΠΡΟΟΡΙΣΜΟΣ ΓΙΑ ΠΑΡΑΤΗΡΗΣΗ ΠΟΥΛΙΩΝ Lesvos is among the top birding destinations in Europe. Its geographical position and varied habitats, particularly wetlands, make it an important stop-over for migrating birds passing through the eastern Mediterranean in spring and autumn. It is also home to birds unique to the island (like Kruper’s Nuthatch) and some with very limited ranges within Europe like the Cinereous Bunting (typical summer visitor). Birders will also find other species of interest that are largely confined to the Balkan peninsula like the OliveTree Warbler, Masked Shrike, Cretzchmar’s Bunting, Ruppell’s Warbler and Western Rock Nuthatch, in addition to impressive concentrations of other, more widespread species.

Some of the best locations on the island for birding are: 1. Kalloni Wetlands (Aristotle’s Lagoon) This large area east of Kalloni and the Tsiknias River is a big draw for many open country migrant and wetland species including herons, storks, waders, rare pelicans, gulls, terns and wildfowl. 2. Ypsilou Monastery Ypsilou is about 10km east of Sigri on the west coast and is one of the top migrant areas in both spring and autumn. Breeding birds include Cinereous Bunting, Rock Sparrow, Isabelline Wheatear and Sombre Tit. 3. Potamia Valley and Metochi Inland Lake The area around the Kalloni-Parakila bridge is good for waders and herons in the Spring. Upstream, the area around the weir and to the south is good for migrant Passerines and it’s possible to run into Olive-Tree Warblers beginning in May. The Metochi lake is an excellent spot for Night-Herons, Purple Herons, Little Bitterns, marsh terns, warblers and hirundines. 4. Napi Valley The Napi Valley runs north from the Kalloni wetlands up to Mantamados and is a major migrant passage route as well as one of the main cross-island routes for raptors and other large migrating birds. 5. Faneromeni The fields on either side of the Tapas River are great for migrant passerines and another area for observing falcons and harriers. 6. Meladia Ford Rufous Bush Robin breeds in the scrub surrounding the river ford that’s also a major migrant trap.

Η Λέσβος είναι μεταξύ των κορυφαίων προορισμών για παρατήρηση πουλιών στην Ευρώπη. Η γεωγραφική της θέση και οι ποικίλοι οικότοποι, ιδιαίτερα οι υγρότοποι, την καθιστούν ένα σημαντικό σταθμό για μεταναστευτικά πουλιά που περνούν από την ανατολική Μεσόγειο, την άνοιξη και το φθινόπωρο. Είναι επίσης το μοναδικό νησί για κάποια πτηνά όπως ο Τουρκοτσομπανάκος του Kruper και κάποια που βρίσκονται σε πολύ περιορισμένες περιοχές στην Ευρώπη, όπως το Σμυρνοτσίχλονο (τυπικός καλοκαιρινός επισκέπτης). Εκτός από τις εντυπωσιακές συγκεντρώσεις άλλων, πιο διαδεδομένων ειδών, παρατηρητές πουλιών θα βρουν επίσης άλλα ενδιαφέροντα είδη που σε μεγάλο βαθμό περιορίζονται στην Βαλκανική χερσόνησο, όπως η Λιοστριτσίδα, η Δακκανούρα και άλλα. 7. Sigri The fields just north of Sigri are a great migrant passerine area for spotting falcons and harriers. 8. Molyvos / Petra Reservoir This is the primary location on the island for Rüppell’s Warbler. Check out the scrubby areas north of Petra at Kavaki and at the lay-by just above an abandoned building. 9. Skala Sykamia The valleys along the coast are excellent for migrants and raptors and among the best spots to see Audouin’s Gull.

For many decades now, the beaches of Molyvos, Eftalou and Sykamia’s Kagia have all been awarded for their cleanliness. Petra’s, Eresos’ and Skala Kalloni’s long sandy beaches are ideal for relaxation or water sports. Waters in all these parts are crystal clear and provide visitors the opportunity to participate in various activities. Its unique light, the cool breeze of the sea, the unique aroma overflowing the entire area in combination with a sequence of beautiful small coasts covered with grey pebbles, perfectly describe the essence of the Greek summer. Swimming in crystal clear waters in the blue flagged pebble beach of Agioi Anargiroi is a unique sensation. The famous Yoga School offers summer lessons near the Eftaliotis cottage and has been a favourite destination for numerous visitors from all over the world for many years now. The small dirt roads and the surrounding areas, decorated with beautiful flora, are fascinating walking routes. Built amongst sculptured rocks rising from the sea, the hot springs of Eftalou await you. The building consisting of a small internal pool and a dome, dates back to the Roman times. Having recently been renovated, visitors can enjoy treatments and relaxation sessions under the care of the trained staff. Visitors may choose from enjoying a separate individual bath in their own private room or taking a dip in the communal bath. Further down, at the point where the coast of Eftalou meets the coast of Argenos, visitors may come across a most unique geological phenomenon, the geothermic field of the area known by the locals as “The Great Springs”. For millions of years now this geothermic field has stretched from the shore and across the sea bed, ending up on the opposite coast of Asia Minor.

Κοντά στο εξοχικό σπίτι του Εφταλιώτη, εδώ και χρόνια υπάρχει σχολή γιόγκα διεθνούς φήμης, με τρίμηνα καλοκαιρινά μαθήματα, που επέλεξε, για όλους τους παραπάνω λόγους, να εγκατασταθεί στην Εφταλού. Όλα τα μικρά και κατάφυτα χωμάτινα μονοπάτια της περιοχής αποτελούν μαγευτικές περιπατητικές διαδρομές. Στην τρίτη αγκαλιά της Εφταλούς, ανάμεσα σε κατάφυτα από φρύγανα βράχια - γεωλογικά γλυπτά, που αναδύονται από τη θάλασσα, βρίσκονται τα γνωστά θερμά - ιαματικά νερά της Εφταλούς. Το οίκημα με την εσωτερική μικρή πισίνα και τον θόλο βρίσκεται εκεί από τα ρωμαϊκά χρόνια. Σήμερα μετά από αναγκαίες, για τον επισκέπτη, μικρές επεμβάσεις στο κτίριο, μπορείς να συνδυάσεις τη θεραπεία με την χαλάρωση, κάτω από τη φιλόξενη περιποίηση του προσωπικου, στον κοινό λουτήρα ή στα δωμάτια με τις ατομικές μπανιέρες. Λίγο πιο πέρα, προς την παραλία της Αργένου, θα συναντήσεις ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα γεωλογικά φαινόμενα του νησιού: το μεγάλο γεωθερμικό πεδίο της περιοχής, τα μεγάλα Θέρμα, όπως ονομάζονται από τους ντόπιους, απλώνεται από την στεριά έως το βυθό της θάλασσας, τη διασχίζει και βγαίνει στα απέναντι μικρασιατικά παράλια.
