PARIKRAMA THE CIRCLE OF LIFE AND DEATH

STUDIO TYPE: VISUALIZATION SITE: PREMABHAI HALL, AHMEDABAD The contrast selected here is Life and death, and in accordance with it the two programs selected are Crematory and a Maternity center, as play and work, respectively. I believe life is the starting of all sufferings. As a person’s life starts, one starts doing karma. According to one’s karma, it is decided whether or not he will achieve mukti or not. Hence a person is under the continuous dilemma of doing what is right or doing what is needed. When a person dies he is on his path of enlightenment liberation and releases from this world where a person undergoes injury, disease, and aging. By release from this cycle of life and death, the suffering involved in this cycle also ends. Hence life is work and death is play according to my philosophy. One the first floor is the reception area and waiting area, while on the second floor is where the general wards are and the third floor consists of operation theatre and cremation kilns. In between these two floors is a waiting area common for both. On the fourth floor is the meditation center common for both there is also a baby care room and a CNG unit. The hall has been converted to an amphitheater which can also be used as a besna hall.

An activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.

To engage in an activity which does not involve effort done in order to achieve a result. Death is freedom from all the sufferings, one achieves Mukti or Moksha after dying. When a person dies he is on his path of enlightment liberation and release from this world.

Play and Work

Mukti Dham Crematorium

Life is starting of sufferings, one is under constant pressure of doing what is right and not doing what needs to be done. A person undergoes injury, diseases and ageing while he lives, due to which he suffers.

Sheth hospital

Strategy The design is based on the strategy of insert of cross programming where the Maternity hospital has been inserted in the Premabhai Hall and the maternity hospital has been interwoven with the crematorium.

Crematorium X Maternity Hospital Program Brief Crematorium Maternity Hospital

within 6 kilometers of premabhai hall there is no crematorium, hence the residents have to go to far places and premabhai hall becomes the perfect place for a crematorium, being in the center of old city.

Old city is a rural area, where proper medication is not given attention to. Hence the need for a maternity hospital with better facilities, and proper hygiene is arises.

Theme The theme of cross- programming is Life and Death, I believe life is the starting of all sufferings. As a person's life starts, one starts doing karma. According to one's karma, it is decided whether or not he will achieve mukti or not. Hence a person is under the continuous dilemma of doing what is right or doing what is needed. SAGA OF INSPIRATIONS AN INTERLUDE OF NATURE AND FURNITURE

STUDIO TYPE: SPACE PLANNING SITE: DEEWANJI NI HAVELI, AHMEDABAD

Indian traditional crafts are the roots of our society. India’s history has been rich and diverse, so are its crafts. The existence of contemporary crafts in today’s world is an example of how efforts are being put into their conservation. The theme of this curated exhibition is bringing back nature in our lives. It is time to not look at things directly, but indirectly. In a subtle way to comprehend and co-relate to the things we see around us i.e. nature. The aim is to tell stories about their relationship between nature and furniture and how nature has inspired the forms of furniture. Artists have started incorporating nature and its forms in contemporary crafts. The exhibits reflect the amalgamation of nature and furniture. The objects have been further classified into different rooms, namely marine afloat, autotroph, heterotroph and feathered. As we go from the first room to the last room we simultaneously go from deep water to liberating sky.

Experiencing the exhibition: The theme and the curatorial narrative allow the designer to develop a strategy for overall planing. The final; exhibition is a combination of four ideas: the exhibition as a artifact display, the exhibition as a visitor activity, the exhibition as an environment, the exhibition as a communicator of ideas.

Perceiving way: Way finding in context to interiors refers to the experience of the users in terms of navigation, orientation within a built environment. This exercise dealt with designing the exhibition graphics and way finding for the exhibition. The idea here is basically to shape experiences that orient, inform, educate the visitors.

MISCELLANEOUS WORKS BEFORE AND OF FIRST YEAR

Hand skills: First thing we learn was free hand drawing, by first doing lines, shapes, 3d forms, assemblage.

Hand drafting: This exercise helped us to learn drafting plans, sections and exploded view, which helped us learn how different layers rested on each other.

Model making: This model was made to learn the basics of model making and strength. The aim was to make 25 bricks stay on the model, the test model could bear 20 bricks, later additions were done in the model. This model also helped us learn different joineries and threading.

Joneries used

Basic idea behind the model

Triangles are the shapes that do not deform, they just buckle or break. In the first design only three triangles were formed, to divide the load further a stick was added in the middle, but still it could not provide stability hence to increase the stability instead of one, two sticks were used in the center.

This exercise helped us to learn drafting plans, sections and exploded view, which helped us learn how different layers rested on each other.

In the test model there was no support in the center due to which the model collapsed , so an extra center line was added which provided support for the model and connected the top to the bottom.

Views of the final model

Load was going to be equally divided so then the ‘X’ form was used in which two sticks from opposite corners meet the diagonal corner. Thus it helps in dividing the load.

The columns were at first pinned from the top and bottom then they were threaded from 30% to 70% of the column so the thread supported the model and the tendency of breaking the stick was extended. Two small sticks were added on the sides of the column to provide extra to the column so that the beams don’t fall.

Testing the model

Works before first year: Before entering CEPT i did different types of drawing methods which included dry pastels, color pencils, pencil shading, doodling, coffee painting.
