Great

Materials are powerful communicators. And the right materials can take any project from good to great. This includes envelopes. Envelopes are equal parts function and first impression. Whether used as a container for personal correspondence or a carrier for direct mail, the envelope is a handshake that says “hello” and “open me first!” Use this guide as a source of inspiration and education to help you strengthen your knowledge of how to use envelopes.

H O W TO U S E T H I S B O O K

Study up. Reference this guide at the beginning of the design process. Use it to be a strong collaborator, and apply these approaches to your communication objectives and the brand strategy of your project.

Educate. Share this guide to help those you’re working with understand how your material choices communicate the message. If others buy into your materials strategy, you’re less likely to be blindsided by a last minute change.

Build it in. Add a paper and envelope spec into your style guides to control how others create with your standards.

Pace yourself. Start the conversation about materials early so that it’s well established by the time you go to press.

Have a strong point of view and stick by it. Make sure everyone involved knows the materials chosen are essential to the communication.

The competition for our audiences’ attention has risen to a fever pitch. They are overwhelmed, bombarded with more-more-more, with less and less impact. What we make needs to matter, to make an impression, to elevate itself from the endless churn of communication.

Make effective things, great things, that slow people down, activate their senses and command their attention. This guide is here to help you do that, by teaching you to use envelopes as a tool to move the needle from good to great. 4

INTRODUCTION

We’ll show you how. 5

A Maker’s Field G uide to E N V E LO P E S

An envelope is a simple and familiar form. It requires no power source or special reader to be held, read and understood. The material we choose for this humble, yet powerful carrier makes all the difference in its perceived quality, provides a hint at its contents and effects the impact it makes on the recipient. At its most basic, an envelope is a social exchange. Like a handshake, it brings with it a first impression and creates anticipation for what is enclosed.

6

SOCIAL RECIPROCITY

E N V E L O P E S O U T P E R F O R M D I G I TA L

A meaningful or satisfying exchange is likely to spark good feelings and a willingness to respond or pay it forward. We feel committed to it. In social psychology this is known as social reciprocity. We enjoy repaying those who put forth an effort. This explains why response rates to a letter or direct mail are significantly higher than response rates to email.

According to a Data & Marketing Association Response Rate Report direct mail outperforms all digital channels—combined—by nearly 600%.

INTRODUCTION

Envelopes convey a message through their color, texture and shape. The materials they are made from and the shapes they take are powerful communicators providing information our brains unconsciously translate into thoughts and emotions. Materials touch us in an emotional way, at an intuitive level. When we use our hands to pick up and open an envelope it creates an instance in our memory. And unlike digital correspondence it provides a tangible artifact we hold on to. Physical interactions are more memorable, more uniquely multisensory than digital interactions, creating deeper experiences. Consider how an envelope engages our senses. We see the visual design elements. We feel the weight and texture. We hear a sound as we open the seal with our fingers and we hear the shuffle of the paper as we move it around. At the first processing level, we notice that a physical piece of mail or stationery is attention-grabbing. At the second level, the more interesting something looks and feels, the more time we spend thinking about

it. At the third level, these experiences combine: high levels of attention and thought create deeper memories that are likely to linger in our mind.1 Even more, an experience that evokes emotions will create a more memorable experience. 2 How can we take advantage of all these design elements to create greater impact? An envelope is a material that sends a message to the receiver. What message do you want to send, and how do you want the receiver to process and remember it?

Consider Texture Texture amplifies your message, capturing your audiences’ attention through touch. As their fingers move across the surface, it sparks their senses and their interest is focused on your content. Envelopes never work alone—they contain, conceal, protect and ultimately reveal your message. And texture is the first way to defy expectations and focus attention.

D I S C O V E R M O R E G R E AT T E X T U R E S The variety of finishes uncoated paper offers gives you more options to control your communication through the interplay of imagery and texture.

Consider Color Your mental model of an envelope probably looks a lot like a 10 commercial envelope made from plain, lightweight white paper. But an envelope can be so much more. Color can be a delicious di≠erentiator. Here we take the standard dimensions of a 10 envelope and let color create an unexpected first impression. And we know that unexpected design choices can spark curiosity about what’s inside. 3

A white wove envelope will do but a 10 commercial envelope in Mohawk Via Safety Yellow jumps out in the mail. A 10 policy envelope in Mohawk Carnival New Black shatters expectations. While the shape says that this is totally appropriate for business this is definitely not business as usual. The unique flap deepens the experience of opening the envelope by forcing us to interact with it in a new way.

Consider Style Choosing the right envelope style signals the care you have taken in preparing your mailing. Once you’ve chosen your paper the next step is to select an envelope style. Style has everything to do with how the envelope comes together. This includes how it opens, the seam style and special details like flap shape and windows.

A SQUARE DOES NOT MEAN A SQUARE FLAP

Square envelopes have been wildly popular for wedding invitations for years. But today a square envelope does not mean you have to select a square flap. Consider the Strathmore envelope in this section, showing a deep Euro flap for a high-impact touch. THEN MAKE IT WORK HARDER

Most envelopes are printed after the paper has been cut, folded and glued and made into an envelope. Printing converted envelopes like this is efficient but it has limitations: you can’t print close to the folds, you can only print one side at a time, you can’t print solids over seams and letterpress printing or embossing will show through on both sides. You can open up a new world of possibilities by printing pre-conversion. And while this takes more time it allows for great creative freedom. The large catalog envelope to the right was printed pre-conversion. Notice how the uninterrupted graphics flow smoothly from side to side.

Consider Flap Shape Unique to envelopes, flaps offer a clue to what is inside. More than just the seal of the envelope the flap is an opportunity to be unique and interrupt the ordinary. And creative design elements may account for up to 25% of whether people pay attention to mail, open it and respond. 4 Study 4

H I N T AT T H E S T O R Y B E F O R E I T U N F O L D S

The traditional pointed flap of a baronial envelope evokes love notes and other sweet sentiments. Shown here in Loop Antique Vellum it is crisp, clean and timeless. The deep square flap brings to mind invitations to elegant events. Strathmore Pastelle’s lush texture makes it dramatic on its own. But with a raw deckled edge along the seal edge it becomes refined and fresh. And the stylish steeply-pointed Euro flap is totally unexpected regardless of the contents. This Superfine Eggshell envelope defies expectations and is a modern alternative.

Consider Size For print advertisements, design choices Mohawk stocks envelopes in a tremendous like size, color, images, and typography range of sizes. But when standard isn’t big play a crucial role in attracting consumer or small enough for your project Mohawk attention and generating emotional impact. 5 can manufacture envelopes in a custom size from any Mohawk paper. S TA N D A R D S I Z E S

The size of an envelope is equal parts function and provocateur. A standard commercial envelope signals an official communication, while an A7 envelope is closely associated with an invitation to a special event. Used strategically, a standard size envelope can help your message get special attention by disrupting expectations. UNIQUE SIZES

Consider an unusual size for a big impact or a small standard envelope as a hidden, special element in a campaign. Using the envelope as an interactive part of a communication can be a powerful and memorable way to make an impression. Study 5 Craik, F.I.M. and Lockhart, R .S. Pieters, R. and Wedel, M. (2004).
