Research and Innovation center ARCH 401 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V Fall20 Işık Neusser, Metin Şahin, Rüya Balaban The design task was to create spaces for research, teaching and learning. It was expected to explore innovative, visionary architectural concepts and strategies. As a part of the design task, we experimented on form-finding strategies analyzing the complex relationship between form, content and program. A strategy merging different layers of each idea was defined. The systematic development of complex spatial models was part of the design process. It was required that the final design is occupant-oriented and contextual in its relationship with the site. 5

Ecolodgy Sustainable Housing ARCH 302 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV Spring20 Burkay Pasin, Lale Başarır, Onurcan Çakır For this project, we were asked to design a sustainable housing complex, which will function as a lodge for the staff members of Izmir University of Economics. The project concentrates on advanced architectural problem-solving skills by treating a specific spatial program for communal housing, site planning, landscaping, detailing, structure in relation to environmental, economic and social concerns for sustainable living. Thus meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 13

Urban Design of Altınpark ARCH 480 Urban Design Principles Fall19 Hugh Clarke

Group members: Aybüke Türkmen, Benhur Taşkın Altınpark is located in the centre of Izmir, it is a rich archaeological site that is closed by a fence and not prepared to welcome visitors because of the lack of security, lighting and the difficulty to access the site. We were asked to redesign the site to make it one of Izmir’s places to visit by giving the site its life back. As well as having the standers of an archaeological site so people can go around and explore the site safely by having a controlled route. A museum was added so visitors can have an idea of the history of the site. 21

Building Construction Project ARCH 303 Building Construction Project I Fall19 Işık Neusser, İlknur Uygun, Onur Erinç, Vedat Tokyay Group member: Muhammet Özdemir

As a construction project, we worked on technical drawings rather than designs. We got to understand the steps of constructing a building in detail. As part of this, we had the ability to know the requirements of the municipality and applied them to the project drawings. Besides that, we made a section model that shows the hidden layers of the building and the structure system that we chose to have. 29

The Wind Center ARCH 202 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II Spring19 Güzden Varinlioğlu, Hugh Clarck, Filiz Özkan In this project, we were asked to design a Sailing Academy for the Urla Peninsula. That will operates year-round and host local and host international small vessel (e.g. centreboard or Olympic) sailing competitions. In addition, it was required to design the covered and open exterior spaces within the boundaries of the site by considering sailboat and public access and entrance to the complex as well as parking, landscaping, etc. The centre will host students, sailors and instructors from the local region and from all around the world to learn about, collaborate and compete in sailing. 39
