ED’S MESSAGE
Hello...
Welcome back! We had some phenomenal feedback about Issue One and have spent the last month tinkering with websites and layouts in an effort to make Modern Vintage Magazine more accessible and more interactive. We really don’t like to make things easy for ourselves! It’s been a busy month for everyone I think, certainly there has been a mad rush here over the last couple of weeks! This months issue takes a distinctly arty turn with reviews of Art and Design books and an interview with Hether Storm, the driving force behind ‘Srt of The PinUp Girl’ a brand new musical.
But first thing’s first; Marilyn. This year marks fifity years since the untimely passing of the legendary actress. We take a look at her life, with some of our favourite quotes and pictures. I’ve loved looking at your posts on the website. Your vintage finds seem to have a distinctive 30s feel while all of your images are just 50s pin up through and through and yet the most hip, happening events are being attended by Mods! What a mixed bunch we are :-) I hope you enjoy this issue and just a hint as to the flavour of next month’s....there will be ink!!! Ed

The iconic Marilyn Monroe No one ever told me I was pretty when I was a little girl. All little girls should be told they’re pretty, even if they aren’t.

Was there ever a more iconic face than that of the late, Marilyn Monroe. As we approach the anniversarry of her untimely death, Modern Vintage Magazine looks at the life of an American sex symbol. Although she passed away aged just 36, Marilyn Monroe remains one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. Born Norma Jean Mortensen in 1926, in Los Angeles, Monroe would become the quintessential American sex symbol; but her path from shy brunette to blonde bombshell, was not straight-forward.
FROM SHY BRUNETTE TO BLONDE BOMBSHELL Monroe’s early life was tumultuous. Her mother Gladys was mentally unstable and the young Norma Jean was passed between foster families, relatives and orphanages for much of her childhood. NORMA JEAN BLEACHED HER HAIR AND HAD COSMETIC SURGERY ON HER NOSE AND TEETH TO BECOME MARILYN MOPNROE
Sadly some of her guardians were abusive and eventually married her friend Jim, to avoid returning to state care when one of her foster parents decided to relocate.
I DON’T WANT TO MAKE MONEY, I JUST WANT TO BE WONDERFUL. When a photographer referred her to The Blue Book Modelling Agency in 1945, Monroe was working in the Radioplane Munitions Factory, spraying aeroplane parts and inspecting parachutes. She became one of their most successful models and was soon spotted by 20th Century Fox. She was initially signed to 6 month contract and she and executive Ben Lyon began the search for a stage name. Taking her mother’s maiden name, Monroe and after much debate, the first name Marilyn: the icon was born.
BEING A SEX SYMBOL IS A HEAVY LOAD TO CARRY, ESPECIALLY WHEN ONE IS TIRED, HURT AND BEWILDERED.
Marilyn had various small, non-speaking parts and was dropped by 20th Century Fox. She struggled for some years and made films with various producers with little success. She even posed nude for rent money and the photographs would eventually be sold by the photographer and printed in Playboy Magazine. JULY 2012 - MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE

Monroe met talent agent Johnny Hyde who secured her a contract with 20th Century Fox and her career was back on track.
‘A CAREER IS WONDERFUL, BUT YOU CAN’T CURL UP WITH IT ON A COLD NIGHT.’ During the early 50s Monroe’s ‘dumb blonde’ persona was established with films such as How To Marry a Millionaire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven year Itch. The famous white dress which billows in the breeze in The seven Year Itch sold for $4.6 million in 2011. The scene, where Marilyn’s dress blows up revealing her legs and underwear infuriated then husband Joe Di Maggio who was watching as the director insisted the scene be shot again and again. They separated a few weeks later. Monroe went on to make many films of varying degrees of success with the critics and her peers. Ed Sullivan described Monroe’s performance of the song “Heat Wave” as a ‘flagrant violation of good taste’ whereas Laurence Olivier described her as ‘an extremely skilled actress’. After winning awards for her part in The Prince and the Showgirl, Marilyn took a break from acting with her then husband, playwright Arthur Miller. She suffered a miscarriage in the Summer of 1957.

Miller encouraged her to return to Hollywood and she did so with a renewed love of acting and a desire to be recognized as a serious actress. Monroe had developed quite a reputation behind the camera. She was notoriously late, often
unwell and crippled by stage fright. Insisting that her acting coaches be allowed to accompany her at all times and frequently refusing to take direction, Monroe’s behavior on the set of ‘Some Like It Hot’ was described as unpredictable. Nonetheless the film was a resounding success and earned Marilyn a Golden Globe for her performance. Marilyn suffered a second miscarriage in December 1958
‘THE THING I WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE? I WANT TO HAVE CHILDREN. I USED TO FEEL FOR EVERY CHILD I HAD, I WOULD ADOPT ANOTHER.’ Her next few films were much less successful and her relationship with Miller began to break down; they divorced in 1961. Marilyn’s health began to deteriorate. She reportedly suffered from manic depression, struggled with her fierce longing to have children and her fear that she was growing old. Drugs, alchohol and ill health plagued the final months of her life as she began filming Something’s Gotta
Give, a film that would never be completed. Monroe was often absent from set, attending just 12 out of 35 days of filming. When she chose to miss an appointment on set to famously sing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy, she was dismissed. Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her apartment just 2 and a half months later, on August 5th 1962. Although her death is recorded as a probable suicide, conspiracy theories abound. Marilyn left the World with quite a legacy. Probably one of the most recognizable faces in popular culture, Marilyn’s was for a time, a true Cinderella story. We may never know who the real Marilyn was, but we know one thing for sure; she was a star!

“I have met people from all over the country who like the same things and with events like this, we can all come together.” It isn’t long before some of the infamous ‘Twitterati‘ begin to descend, all looking curiously at one another. It’s then that it strikes me, nobody knows who anybody is!? Having chatted for hours online about music, fashions and this very event, everyone knows their new best friends only by their Twitter nickname! Before long, people begin to meet in real life and a wonderful atmosphere develops. I’m more accustomed to twee, vintage events held in halls and tea rooms, this felt more like an incredibly hip, private party and everyone was invited!
A HIP PRIVATE PARTY AND EVERYONE WAS INVITED! Guests came from as near as next door and from as far as Zurich; all ages came together to enjoy the musical stylings of Je Suis Natalie, the Leeds based Double Hip DJs, Rock and Roll Lounge DJs and the event’s special guest DJ Miss Stacie Stewart. Stacie was one of the most unassuming and easy-going headlining acts I have ever met. A Masterchef finalist and owner of The Beehive Bakery, Stacie is a full time mod and a rather talented northern soul DJ! I found her outside, playfully chatting with the other DJs before her set.
IT’S EARLY AFTERNOON AS WE ENTER THE TRENDY BAR IN MANCHESTER’S NORTHERN QUARTER. WE’RE RATHER UNFASHIONABLY ONTIME: THE BAR STAFF ARE STILL STOCKING FRIDGES AND A LONE FIGURE, DRESSED IN THE LOUDEST SHIRT I HAVE EVER SEEN IS PREPARING HIS SET FOR THE AFTERNOON. THIS IS THE SLEEPING GIANT THAT IS THE ROCK AND ROLL LOUNGE’S MOD ALLDAYER. Hosted by Cord Bar and the second of it’s kind, the Mod Alldayer began slowly as one by one, DJ’s, soul lovers, mods and lucky passers-by, came together in one of the friendliest, most welcoming events I have ever attended. Jim, the organizer proudly explains that much of the organizing was done via Twitter.

Inside the event had gone from a great idea, to a good effort, to a rip roaring success. Mods and soul fans of all ages chatted about music and upcoming events and the Twitterati became real life friends.
“SOME GOOD STORIES TO TELL.” Well known Northern Soul DJ Dave the Suede shared tales of how the Manchester mod scene has developed and one couple who have enjoyed northern soul since it was ‘new’ said; “There’s a lovely mix of people here. It’s nice that the youngsters have respect for us older ones who have been here since the beginning. We’ve got some good stories to tell.” The music carried on well into the night and the laid back atmosphere just got better and better. The Rock and Roll lounge hope to organize further Mod Alldayers around the North of England and potentially a regular event and we hope we’ll be asked to pop in again! Ah Summertime, how long we’ve waited for you to arrive…..some of us are still waiting! For many people around the UK and indeed around the World, respite from the cold weather comes only when they take their Summer vacation….and some like it hot! How did the glamour-pusses of yester year manage to remain so polished even in hot, humid conditions? The truth is, they didn’t. They were just very good at making sure that ohtographs were taken at the ‘right time’! Natural beauty is one thing, but it can’t protect you from pink skin, shiny noses and frizzy hair!

Thankfully modern ingenuity offers us solutions that just weren’t available in the last century. Here is the Modern Vintage guide to staying fabulous, when temperature goes up! 1. Fake it ‘til you make it: It is a widely held belief that a tan makes you look healthy; ironic then that it is not good for you at all. A good quality sun-cream will protect you from harmful rays whilst still allowing you develop a holiday glow. Until that glow arrives, just slap on the fake tan! 2. Pale is the new tan: Why not embrace your pale skin and be confident enough to forego a tan (fake or real) completely. More and

more celebrities are jumping on the pale skin band wagon, why not join them. Use a high factor sun-cream and cover up with kaftans and wide brimmed hats. 3. Chin Up: Strut your stuff out there! Hold your head high and keep your back straight, wear wedges if you prefer, either way, be proud of your beach body. Nothing is more attractive than confidence. 4. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! If you do nothing else for your skin, do this! There are some great aftersun products available, but a good quality body moisturizer will go a long way to helping your skin recover, after a day in the sunshine. For burnt skin (not that you will allow your skin to burn of course) nothing beats good old fashioned Aloe Vera Gel, which is available from most health food stores and pharmacies. For sun parched faces, take Grandma’s advice and each for some simple Cold Cream. 5. Be a savvy traveller: Research your destination long before you travel. Is it better to change your money before you travel or will you get a better exchange rate at your hotel? Are there any activities for which you’ll need special clothing such as aqua shoes etc? Have you had all necessary immunisations 6. Keep it fresh: There’s nothing less attractive than the melted make-up look, so keep it simple. Wear as little as you can bear. If you have problem skin, wear a light, liquid
concealer and trust the sun to help clear up imperfections. Shiny skin is better combatted with blotting sheets as powder can become cakey in the sun. If you are self-conscious about pale eye lashes, invest in a good quality waterproof mascara and if not, try a clear mascara, to open up the eyes without risking the panda look. A lipstick with added SPF will kill two birds with one stone and your evening makeup should be kept to a minimum to show off that holiday glow. 7. Be a bag lady: Take a couple of carrier bags with you. They can be used to protects against leaks from liquids packed in your hold luggage, as storage bags for dirty laundry or to protect your belongings from wet swimwear on your way home. You can even use them to line the bottom of straw beach bags to stop the contents from getting damp. 8. Pack clever: ‘Take fewer clothes and more money’ is the advice given by travel bloggers and lets be honest, all of us have had holidays where half of our clothes have come back home with us unworn. Check whether your hotel has laundry facilities and take clothes that you can mix and match to create different outfits. 9. Keep up: There are so many products on the market to help combat the effects of sun, sea and swimming pools. Most do help and allow you to create lovely sleek hair for the
evening. But how long does it last? For those plagued with frizzy hair, give yourselves a break, why not master a few ‘up do’s’ for those days when your locks just will not be tamed. 10. Be prepared: 1000s of bags went missing in Airlines last year. That’s 1000s of holiday makers who either never saw their belongings again or at least had to live without them for a few days on holiday. Be clever about it. Put a tag on your bag saying your name, number and your departure and destination airport. Put the same information on a piece of paper inside your bag incase the tag becomes detached. Pack your carry on luggage with everything you’ll need for your first day. Swimwear, a change of underwear and perhaps a maxi dress; your sun-cream, toothbrush and essential cosmetics. That way if your are one of the unlucky ones, you can still enjoy your holiday while you wait for your luggage to arrive or at least have something appropriate to wear while you shop for replacement holiday clothes.

Homemade 1. Preheat the oven to 220 or Gas Mark 7 2. In a large bowl combine the flour and baking powder 3. Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips, until you have a ‘bread crumb’ consistency. 4. Stir in the sugar 5. In a measuring jug, beat the eggs together and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence. 6. Add semi skimmed milk up to the 300ml/1/2 pint line. 7. Set 2 tablespoons of the egg mix aside for brushing. 8. Gradually add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients, combining well with each addition. 9. You will eventually have a soft dough. 10. Don’t worry if your mixture is a little sticky, all good scone dough is! 11. On a lightly floured surface, roll
the dough to 2 cm / ¾ inch thickness. 12. Cut out rounds, we use a 5cm/ 2 inch cutter. 13. Gently gather the remaining dough together, roll and continue to push out rounds. 14. Arrange the scones on a baking tray leaving a couple of cm gap around each one. 15. Brush the tops with the egg mixture. 16. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown and well risen Serve as fresh as possible with jam and clotted or whipped double cream, perfect for afternoon tea. Dressing Marilyn: How a Hollywood icon was styled by William Travilla
This book is lovingly written and of course beautifully illustrated. It offers insight into the workings of the costume department in the studios in the golden era and the relationship between designer Travilla and Marilyn Monroe. Featuring photographs of glorious gowns and delicate original patterns, the mbook is a must for Monroe fans and design buffs alike. Monroe adored William Travilla. She wrote a note to him which read - “Billy Dear, please dress me forever. I love you, Marilyn.”
Joss Stone: The Soul Sessions Volume Two Joss Stone released Volume One in 2003 when she was just 16. Now older and wiser and with sufficient living and heartache under her belt to bring the needed bite to some of the more emotive songs on the album, Joss sounds better than ever. She is still at her strongest when belting out a note with purpose, but there are beautiful soft tones to her voice that make this a very grown up, sophisticated album indeed.
The Lorax - Dr Seuss This is a beautiful story, cleverly told...in the original book that is. Sadly despite the bright colours and exciting chases, this film falls oddly short. Small children will probably find it exciting but if you are planning on taking them or yourself for sentimental reasons, then don’t bother, this just isn’t as good as the book.

The Complete Pin-Ups Gil Elvgren THIS IS A REALLY BEAUTIFUL, SUBSTANTIAL BOOK. PERFECT TO ADORN A COFFEE TABLE, GIVE AS A GIFT OR USE AS A REFERENCE. The layout is wonderful. So often art books are awash with too much writing and too few images. The book keeps all the information, which is well researched and written, at the beginning of the book. This allows for pages and pages of uninterrupted, glorious, vintage pin-ups. As you wouldexpect from Taschen books, the images are cleverly arranged into loosely defined sections. These range from the time of painting, to the pose of the model and nature of the scene. The publishers have done well to amass such a large collection of Elvgren’s work and it’s nice that they chose to include images for which they could only obtain a less than perfect example. Despite the grainy appearance of some of the lesser known works, which the writer admits are some times a ‘Xerox of a Xerox of a bad photo’, any true lover of Elvgren’s work would much rather see a poor copy of a rare image than not see it at all.
The only ounce of negativity we can muster about this book is that there are numbers in the corner of each image. As an art book, it would be nice if it depicted the pieces in a clear, unblemished way. Numbering and overlapping images is one of our pet-hates All things considered, thanks to the luscious content, the skilled layout and the fantastic quality of this book and because we simply adore Gil Elvgren pin-ups, Modern Vintage Magazine would happily recommend this book to you. The Complete Pin Ups is available from Amazon and all good book stores.

Heather, we at MVM love Pin-Ups as much as anyone, but you have really gone above and beyond the average fan!! What first inspired you?
Originally I was inspired by the coffee table book, “the Great American Pin-Up”, which is a compilation of most of the great artists of pin-up. I kept looking at them and thinking: what if this girl came to life? what would her story be?? Then I wrote the theme song for Pin-Up Girl and that seemed to start the ball rolling. In this case - the music came first. I always imagined the pin-up girl singing.
You have met some very interesting people on this journey including pin up artist Baron von Lind! How did that happen?
Shortly after coming across his work online I discovered that he lived only an hour from my home. I sent an email into the great abyss of the internet - not expecting to hear anything back. He called me the next day, and about a week later I went to his home and visited his studio. . He agreed to do an original piece for our show - which was a great honour. But what was even more wonderful, was his vast knowledge of pin-up. He personally knew (and was mentored by) Gil Elvgren and many of the artists at Brown and Bigelow - where he worked as well. Many of the times and places that I had written about were places he had been. It seemed a natural thing to incorporate his legacy and fascinating life story into this love letter to our pin-up girl.
Are there any other ‘real life’ characters in the show?
The story follows pin-up girls - some real life like Ruth Etting, Lena Horne, Bettie Page - and some imagined - in pivotal moments in their lives - that are also pivotal moments in the history of pin-ups. I also write about Anna Mae Clift and her love story with Alberto Vargas. It is one of the most romantic stories I
encountered because their love was so deep that when she died before him - he ceased to paint.
You must have done a huge amount of research, have you uncovered anything interesting?
To me it is all interesting - and beautiful and glamorous! But perhaps the most interesting story of the entire piece is a biographical one from my husband’s family. My husband’s father was a jazz musician and a radio personality in the 50s and 60’s in New York. He was well-known and when he passed away, his wife discovered a box of personal effects which included telegrams and love letters from the actress Lena Horne! They had been having an affair and meeting in secret for several years. My husband (who is also our composer) remembers meeting her as a young boy about age 6 - he was the only member of his family to meet the movie star. We re-enact the day that he met her - but we go behind the closed doors to see what might have happened.
You have already accomplished so much, what is the next step?
This show has been a work in progress for over 10 years - so even though it seems like things have happened quickly in the past year - it’s really been a labor of love. We are putting together a live band/group to perform the songs - called Popeye & the Pin-Ups and soon we will announce castings in South Florida. Official merchandise will be available soon. Completing the staged reading was wonderful and now we are hopeful that a theatre company will take the show and give it a world premier.

This hair style works best on day old hair or hair that is feeling a little worse for wear ie holiday hair! To create this look you will need: Kirby grips in the colour of your hair, A bobble/hair band A scarf Hair spray - strong Straightening irons or curling tongs A fine toothed comb A large round hair-brush
5. Separate the front into 3 sections 6. Back comb the middle section, spraying with strong hairspray 7. With the round brush, brush the whole front section together to create your big curl with your fingers 3and pin in place with Kirby grips. 8.
Spray well!
1. Start by sectioning off the front of your hair in a U shape.
9. Tie on your scarf, clipping into place if necessary
2. Tie the rest of your hair back in a high pony-tail
10. Curl the ponytail in small sections
3. Curl the front of your hair in small sections in the direction you would like your curl to fall. Spray
11. Spray and back-comb the pony tail and either leave as a pony or clip in place to make a large bun
4. Gently brush the curls together once

AS A RULE, VINTAGE EVENTS, SHOPPING BASED OR OTHERWISE ARE DOMINATED BY THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES; BUT NOT MOD EVENTS. WHAT IS IT ABOUT MOD CULTURE THAT MAKES IT SO POPULAR WITH GENTLEMEN? ‘Originally known for scooters, amphetamines and punch-ups, the Mod sub-culture sprang up in the late Fifties. It peaked with startling clashes between Mods and their arch rivals the Rockers – who rode motorbikes, wore leathers and listened to rock ’n’ roll. Mods thought Rockers were dirty morons while Rockers thought Mods were squeaky-clean snobs. In 1964, fights between them across the UK caused a moral panic.’
But what does Mod Culture mean now in 2012? Is it only about the music now; the clothes and the hair? Or do today’s
mods still hark after a time, when smartly dressed chaps on scooterswould stick it to the man!? Mod culture today, is the culture of the likely lad! Mod culture and Northern Soul has had a resurgence in popularity over the last two years. Sharply dressed with just lithe right amount of cheekiness, the ‘modern day mod’ still has that edge of rebellion, that confidence to not care that they stand out. Nowadays the Mods are more social towards ‘outsiders’ and less likely to be riled up by leather clad rockers!! You’ll find them in cool bars listening to Northern Soul and they’ll be more than happy to have you join them.

So much fun learning the Charleston By Carrie-Ann Wade Williams Readers Articles I’M SLIGHTLY OBSESSED WITH ANYTHING ART DECO SO WHEN I MET SOPHIE AND KATE FROM KASO STUDIOS I COULDN’T PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY THE CHARLESTON. Sophie and Kate are trained dance teachers who have bundles of energy and enthusiasm. This is what makes them such great instructors. Having got to know them through local fitness classes in Buckinghamshire, they soon picked up on my love for the 20s and 30s. When I mentioned wanting to try the Charleston, they were only too keen to help.
So far I have had four lessons and have already mastered two lifts (I’m grateful to have an obliging husband who indulges my Deco obsession), a part-

nered step routine and I’m just working on a few solo moves. Sophie and Kate make the lessons challenging but achievable and are patient teachers. They have also shared the history of the Charleston with me which has really helped me get into the spirit of the dance.
I am still not sure how the Flapper girls made it look so easy dressed in all their finery. The Charleston is so much fun and a great workout. I’m looking forward to trying a few Charleston steps in public soon!
