TOULOUSE an artist’s-eye view
modul-dance Modul-dance is a multi-annual cooperation project with the participation of 20 European dancehouses from 16 countries. One of the project’s key elements is the promotion of mobility, so that artists receiving its support follow itineraries across Europe to develop their creative work and present it to different audiences. Each of the guides in this collection shows a city from the viewpoint of a local artist, who proposes his or her own particular route to artists in transit, seeking to put them in connection with their host city. While these city routes share some basic features, each one is different and in their differences lies a wealth of gazes, aesthetics, approximations to the local and much more. In a word, they form a mirror of the diversity that modul-dance has always fostered. The Toulouse city guide has been possible thanks to the curatorial work of the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique, a partner in the modul-dance project.

Coraline Lamaison presents Toulouse
Coraline Lamaison is a stage director and choreographer. She trained at the Academy of Dramatic Art of Toulouse and then at the Théâtre Sorano in Toulouse under the supervision of Jacques Rosner. Between 1996 and 2003 she performed on different works directed by Claude Bardouil (the assistant and choreographer of Krzysztof Warlikowski); namely, Bal des Anges, Jusqu’au dernier baiser, Les Innocents and Les Vaniteux. In 20042005 she performed for Jan Fabre on The Crying Body at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and for a European tour, as well as performing L’Histoire des Larmes at the Festival d’Avignon in 2005. In 2002 she created Etude pour un homme seul at the Théâtre de la Digue in Toulouse. In 2004 she directed and performed 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane with the support of Claude Régy (copyright owner) at the Théâtre de la Digue in Toulouse. In 2007 she presented Rugby at the Théâtre National de Toulouse and at the Stade Toulousain, a work in progress for dancers and rugby players. Her works also include Narcisses-0, created in 2009 and presented in Avignon and Ex/stase, Narcisses-1, presented at the Novart Festival in Bordeaux in 2010. In 2012 she directed Altérité together with Bouziane Bouteldja for Parvis Scène Nationale in Tarbis. The piece received the first price of Reconnaissance concours of Maison de la Danse Lyon and Le Pacifique Grenoble. As assistant to Jan Fabre/Troubleyn she worked on L’Empereur de la Perte and Le Roi du Plagiat at the Festival d’Avignon in 2005, subsequently touring in France until 2008. She also collaborated with Guy Cassiers/Toneelhuis in Anvers as the coach for actor Dirk Roofthooft on the French version of Rouge Décanté at the Festival d’Avignon in 2006 which was followed by a European tour lasting until 2010. In 2010 she was selected by the modul-dance project to develop the piece Narcisses 2.0, which was premiered in 2012 at Tanzhaus NRW Düsseldorf. Since this year she is an associated artist at Théâtre Sorano in Toulouse where, one year later she premiered Vulnerables, the first movement of La Mort des sentiments.

Sylvain Huc & Cécile Grassin present Toulouse
Sylvain Huc & Cécile Grassin Sylvain Huc & Cécile Grassin have been working primarily as dancers and choreographers in the Cie Divergences since 2010. Sylvain Huc discovered dance following his studies in the History of Greece at University. He trained at CDC Toulouse in 2003 and performed for different companies (Divergences, La Zampa, Coraline Lamaison, etc.). Cécile Grassin graduated from Rosella Hightower School in Cannes and performed for different companies and projects (Cie Kossiwa, Laura Scozzi, Pierre Meurier, etc.). They met in 2009 and worked together to create Le Petit Chaperon Rouge for young audiences, a manifestation liberating traditional Little Red Riding Hood from narration and silliness. In 2012 they developed this project transforming it into Rotkäppchen for adult audiences, focussing on the physical archaism of fear. Following the success of both pieces, their next project Kaputt deals with the notion of failure.
