concerts Del McCoury Band

with special guest Chatham County Line

Sun. September 9, 2012 • 7:30pm

Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music $38 “I’d rather hear Del McCoury sing ‘Are You Teasing Me’ than just about anything.” – Vince Gill For 50 years, Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for hard-core bluegrass fans. A direct musical descendant of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, and armed with a musical open-mindedness, McCoury has parlayed the traditional sounds of the genre to a much broader audience by way of unconventional collaborations including Phish and country rocker Steve Earle, among others. The Del McCoury Band has won 31 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards and a Grammy® for Best Bluegrass Album. Sponsored in part by the H.G. Quigg Endowment

Join the Modlin Center for the Arts in kicking off the 2012-2013 season with a pre-show reception beginning at 6pm in the Booth Lobby.

Red Baraat Fri. September 21, 2012 • 7:30pm

Alice Jepson Theatre $20 (seated tickets and standing orchestra pit passes available) “Imagine a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat — you can’t? Then just listen, because your day is about to get better. It’s a crazy blast of fun.” – All Songs Considered

This tour engagement of Red Baraat is supported in part by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Tours program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program.

Pioneering Brooklyn dhol n’ brass band Red Baraat has made a name for itself as one of the best live bands playing anywhere in the world. Led by dhol player Sunny Jain, the nine-piece band – comprised of dhol (a double-sided, barrelshaped, North Indian drum slung over one shoulder) drumset, percussion, sousaphone, and five horns – melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go, Latin, and jazz. Simply put, Sunny Jain and Red Baraat have created and defined an explosive sound entirely their own. Due to the potential for overwhelming fun, the Modlin Center is offering both seated tickets and standing orchestra pit passes for this event.

Buika Sun. October 21, 2012 • 7:30pm

Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music $34 “A mesmerizing, cross-cultural stew featuring the wailing emotionality of cante (flamenco song) and coplas... with undercurrents of Latin jazz and soul.” – Washington Post A trailblazing force in contemporary Spanish music, Buika has become a true revelation to those who thought flamenco had little left to contribute to Spanish music. Her unique blend of flamenco, jazz, funk, copla, and neo-soul has made her one of NPR’s 50 Great Voices of all time and led The New York Times to call her music “luminous... magnificent... superb!”
