My how quickly the seasons change. Fall always brings a new freshness and winter really cleans it all up. I truly hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I treasure every moment I have with my family. I know that I am very thankful for my family, friends and my co-workers. The people we surround ourselves with are where we get our inspiration, direction and strength. Our house has a firm line on Christmas décor. The day after Thanksgiving, we make the change, quickly and thoroughly. It is a wonderful thing that after all of these years we still enjoy decorating our tree, listening to Dean Martin holiday music and our annual screening of Christmas Vacation. Who would have thought that 35 years after this movie came out, it is our transitional holiday experience, complete with family dialog enhancement. Best of all, Jamie loved it A new era begins. I hope you will join us on December 19 at the Intermission at the State Theatre for a special ugly sweater 35th Anniversary Christmas Vacation screening, complete with adult eggnog. Please bring some gently used ugly sweaters to donate. It seems like we are racing down the freeway toward the end of the year. I already feel like every evening is booked and just how will we get everything in. But one thing for sure is that Rockin’ Holiday

is ready to go. Thanks to our SPWG and Collins teams, 10th St Plaza is a Rockin’ North Pole winter wonderland. We are so happy that we are able to do this for our community. Thanks to our sponsors we are able make this a FREE event for people to get pictures with Santa, enjoy the Rockin’ Tree, hear some great local music and best of all, Rockin’ Snow. It is so fun to make some magic and hope you get a chance to enjoy it. As John Lennon once said, “so it is Christmas, and what have you done”. As the year end approaches, please check to see that we are looking out for others. There are coat and toy drives, the Community Christmas tree at the Mall, kettle ringing for Salvation Army and donations for the Gospel Mission and a variety of other ways to help. If each of us do a little, it ads up to a lot for people that are in need. As we look forward to 2024, our goal needs to be teamwork. There are good things happening in our city and there are still challenges. As we gather for the holidays, let’s work together to find ways to do things better, bring more people to the table. It is so great to have a new era of teamwork with our downtown organizations, and as President of Visit Modesto, introducing more people to our community is good for our civic pride, or economy and our future.

There is a new energy this holiday season and people seem to be optimistic. We are making big progress at the Graffiti USA Museum, the Children’s Museum is open, and Mod Shop returned, Rockin’ Holiday is opening and there is a good buzz. I hope you share that feeling and know that’s what we work hard for every day here at ModestoView. Let’s team up, get involved, support our local economy and make sure that we tell Modesto’s story for a shared sense of pride about where we live. I look forward to sharing some great holiday experiences with you this year. See you out and about and please, let me know what you like about ModestoView and also what you don’t so we can keep making it better. With gratitude. Good things are happening in downtown. Blocks are coming to life, new restaurants are opening and the music is ringing in the air. This holiday season, it is even going to be more special with the lights and snow of Rockin’ Holiday and Modesto On Ice. One more reason to explore is the magical corner of 13th and J. There is so much new energy on this entire block. Think about it, we have the amazing walk of the neon lit-up 10th Street Brenden Theatre, from the Doubletree to the Gallo Center, the creativity coming from the Prospect Theatre

Project and now the brightly-lit J Street from the Intermission at 13th the Jewel, the State and up to the new blue lighting of LoFi Labs and Diner at 14th. Block by block, Modesto becomes more walkable and people are coming out. Soon, there will be new exiting downtown lighting idea plan and hopefully the entire length of J will be bright and welcoming. But more is happening here. The State Theatre is home to Modesto’s independent film community and the Ill List, the soldout National poetry slam competition on December 9. Current State board president

Sam Pierstorff, MJC English Professor by day, Ninja Poet at night has been elevating the spoken and written word and adding events like the Crush Congregation Beat Battle. Recently MoSt Poetry hosted their readings at the new Intermission. There are new poetry nights and “Write Night” workshops and soon, ModestoView is teaming up with Burn & Rave/Ninja on a new Haiku anthology, taking submissions now through February. This month do not miss “The Illiterists” Burn & Rave Poetry Night and Haiku Battle at the LoFi Lab & Diner on December 13th . This is Modesto’s beatnik experience, piano backed poetry reading complete with snaps and feels like you could be in the early 60s NYC Village. Check it out. There are just a few seats left. Lo fi also features Trivia nights on Tuesdays. In the mornings, Lo Fi diner is open for breakfast. On December 10, across the street, Modesto Stanislaus Poetry (MoSt) is having their member reading at the DragonFly at 1210 J at 6 pm. Learn more and become a MoSt member at mostpoetry.org “Something’s happening here, and what it is ain’t exactly clear”, but it is very exciting. ART VIEW

December, our last 31 days of 2023, includes holiday shopping days and end-of-theyear closeouts. If you went to the endof-November Shop Local Saturday, with Handmade Arts and resurrected Mod Shop, thank you for supporting local artists. You can still resist the big box stores and find locally created gift ideas in Modesto. Art Walk can accommodate your last-minute seasonal shopping as Third Thursday falls on December 21. Check out downtown creative-related businesses. Watch for neighborhood pop-up art and crafter sales. I may hold one on December 16. Galleries already decked out for the holiday and Christmas season include Dragonfly Art for Life and The Chartreuse Muse before Thanksgiving. Friends of mine also sell art with Assisted Senior Living facilities and all sorts of non-profit organizations. There may be artists and crafters in your neighborhood doing home sales. Purchasing local keeps the investment swirling in our local community, including the arts. Mistlin Gallery presents the Give the Gift of Art members show with a theme of affordable pricing and smaller works. I have a trio of Space Cats in the show, but you can find other affordably priced items in the Mistlin Gift Shop. They have smaller art paintings, 3D art, ceramics, jewelry, and prints. Chartreuse Muse features Suzanne Staud’s art, and they have a great gift shop spot with ceramics, art, jewelry, and the Artfully Yours subscriptions. Muse, Mistlin, and Dragonfly offer classes for kids and adults. In November, several murals appeared, some from the Heartland Grant artists and new ones further out than traditional downtown. Public Storage at 1401 Woodland Avenue has a full series of Modestothemed mural walls by Jerry Ragg and Mural Décor. At 1331 K Street, you can see the Modesto Baseball history-themed wall. I don’t have an artist credit for that one. Moving toward the west side, 401 H Street has a new mural by Hocus on Johnny’s Market, and it’s the first of many planned, one of Heartland grant projects. The mural on H Street is spectacular. FOLLOW US:

Art Makes Great Gifts By Jim Christiansen

Make Studio Modesto had their ribboncutting ceremony on November 9. This art and creative business has an open studio, private parties, workshops, and classes. It has been around for a while, although I didn’t know it. They are open Wednesday to Friday from 11 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Make Studio Modesto is located at 318 Needham Avenue and online at makestudiomodesto.com. I also missed an art exhibition by Jaime Sandoval on November 9 at Retro Bar and Lounge, 1012 15th Street. I checked out Jaime’s art on Facebook, but these shows and events pop up a lot in our area, so keep your eyes open for the creatives in the 209. Kruse Lucas Imports gallery features the abstract and multimedia art of William Taylor. His paintings will be on display in December, January, and February. It is located at 525 Tully Road, across the road from MJC and nearby the Silos murals. Stanislaus Arts Council is sponsoring 2 Photography Competitions, with deadlines on December 15. For more information, visit the Arts Council, which operates the Mistlin Gallery, or go to http://stanislausarts.org/photocontest for applications. Looking ahead to 2024, as December includes Auld Lang Syne, consider a coffee mug, tee shirt, Space Cat Sketchbook, or a 2024 Coffee Cat Wall Calendar. My designs are featured on the web page and published for me by Leo Garcia. Visit Coffeecatscalendar.com to order Coffee Cat and Space Cat items in time for Christmas or the New Year.

Holiday Parades

1937

UNPLUGGED VIEW

Into The Mystic By Aaron Rowan

By Harrison Power

1933 1933 1951

One of Modesto’s anticipated traditions of the holiday season is the Celebration of Lights Holiday Parade. The parade as we now know and love it goes back to 1996, when the holiday parade for the first time was moved to later in the evening to allow for a better lighted spectacle. Prior to that, the “Christmas Parade” was held during the day and was on the same day as the City Tree Lighting. For many years before then, there was no organized holiday parade in Downtown Modesto but over the years dedicated businesses, volunteers, and organizations have all played a part in facilitating holiday festivities. From a review of newspaper coverage in early Modesto, it appears the first regularly organized holiday celebration for the community was in December 1931, with “Yuletide Fetes” planned by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and other trade organizations. Intended to attract shoppers and families to downtown stores and restaurants, the main kick off for the holiday celebration was a “Kiddie Parade” or “Kiddie Chrdistmas Parade.” The 1931 children’s parade included more than 2,000 children from around Stanislaus County adorned in costumes, and over the years additions were made to the parade to add local school marching bands, live animal circuses, and floats which continued until 1942. In 1942, wartime greatly overshadowed the typically cheery and colorful celebration with costumes more often representing nurses and soldiers than North Pole characters and holiday colors. Then starting 1943, it appears no Kiddie Parade was held likely due to community focus on World War 2, although local theater managers of the State, Strand, and Princess did play free holiday children-only screenings. Downtown retail merchants in 1951 sought to revive the holiday festivities, and the Christmas Parade of 1951 was the first holiday parade in Modesto to have giant balloon characters as a focal point of the parade. More than thirty balloons were in the parade, one of which was a giant dragon over 80 feet long! Following this parade, it appears the focus of holiday celebrations pivoted to other surrounding cities through the 1960’s and 1970’s in towns like Riverbank, Turlock, and Ceres. From 1987 to 1989, a Christmas Parade was brought back to Downtown Modesto thanks to the Christian Berets organization. The Parade in 1990 was then sponsored and organized by the KO93 (B93, KOSO) radio station through 1995, along among other various community partners. In 2000, there were 2,500 parade participants, an estimated 500,000 parade lights, and 18,000 attendees showing just how committed the community was to the annual event. Coming up to 2020, despite a public health crisis and global pandemic, the Modesto community rallied in support of a modified parade experience: a drivethru parade of lights through the streets of Downtown, where attendees drove themselves down the middle of I Street which was lined with lighted parked cars and festive parade floats. The holidays are a time marked by community giving and joyful spirit, and one of the best ways to see this is with a parade.

In Luray, Virginia, there is a cavern system that is the most majestic and otherworldly I have ever toured. Spires, waterfalls, pinecones, and rows of tentacles, all fashioned from stone and mineral and painted in shades of pale white and orange. Pristine pools, some perfectly reflecting the formations above, others illuminated in lush aquamarine. And in a vast chamber in the heart of the system, there is music: the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a gorgeous Persian-red machine connected to an array of mallets affixed to the cavern walls, creating melodies to fill the chamber. It’s a fitting visual to mirror the place I find myself in lately, as I explore new landscapes without and within. After a decade of highly prolific curation of live music, 2023 has seen me produce a mere handful of events. It’s not exactly a sabbatical, and it’s by no means a sunsetting - Modesto still needs its most unique and eclectic concert programmer, after all - but I’ve been drawn away from that duty somewhat while traveling and savoring new experiences. Glassblowing. Riding camels. And perhaps most impressively, being outfoxed as both a foodie and a finder of music by the lady I’ve been sharing in all these adventures with. How rewarding to find a fellow cultured conservative to enjoy companionship with, and what a treat it’s been to show her off around Modesto while also showing her the best of our local music offerings. This has been the most exciting year of my life

thus far, and I mean to carry the slower but more satisfying pace into 2024, with a few fantastic concerts. To help wrap up this year, I’m teaming up once again with the phenomenal Opera Modesto for the annual ‘Around The World’ multicultural revue. Folk, classical & jazz songs will be performed in various languages: Spanish, Italian, Tagalog, and Hawaiian, to name a few; along with exotic instruments and a few surprises. This is always the most fantastic showcase I’m involved with each year, and there’s an added twist this time that I’m looking forward to as I’ve not looked forward to in many moons. Join us on Sunday, December 3 at 2 pm at the Prospect Theatre for this special matinee. $30 GA, $20 student, tickets are on sale now at www.operamodesto.org. The last live music I saw last year was by one of the greatest bands our county has ever seen, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, and I see no reason why history shouldn’t repeat itself. On New Year’s Eve, these boys bring their energetic Americana to the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, opening for the Brothers Comatose. TGLTSO features one of my very favorite songwriters, Chris Doud, who’s among the top five poetic lyricists I know of. (I’ve had the honor of working with three of them.) Wind down 2023 in wine country with these powerhouse players. Tickets were still available as of Thanksgiving week. Wishing a merry Christmas to all, and a most enriching new year to all my fellow live music lovers. Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.

Be sure to get your dose of holiday cheer and attend the 2023 Celebration of Lights Holiday Parade, with the theme “Toys, Trains, and Candy Canes” taking place December 2nd at 5:30PM in Downtown Modesto. Follow the View Crew on Twitter, starting with @modestoview

W E I V R E T N I

Chad and Mark with The Ten Tenors at the McCallum Theatre tour. They’d seen some videos of me and wanted to fly me out to NYC to audition for the creative team. The rest is history.

Performing arts are the soul of our com-

munity. In all of the various forms, song, dance, theatre, music, poetry and more, the arts give a community character and builds a foundation for creativity. The arts enhance music and theatre in schools and bring people together and highlights our many cultures. Under the inspiration of Marie Gallo and dedicated community support, the Gallo Center for the Arts opened in 2007 and forever changed Modesto for the better. I am proud to be one of the original committee members and have been a part of the Gallo Center ever since 2001. Modesto’s symphony, ballet and community theatre now had a world-class professional stage and auditorium, stars from around the world were attracted to the Gallo’s excellent acoustics and the size of the auditoriums allow an intimate feel. The Gallo Center has delivered what was promised and our community should be proud. Today, the Gallo Center stands as the way to do the performing arts right, beating the odds of a pandemic, and emerging strong as many cities face dire challenges. The people of Modesto believe in the Gallo Center that also shines light on the State Theatre, the Prospect Theatre, MJC and school arts programs. Modesto has something special. CEO Chad Hilligus has an amazing background. In fact, he first came to the Gallo Center in 2014, when he appeared with the multi-platinum Australian crossover group The Ten Tenors. Chad is a veteran of West Side Story having played Tony in more than 20 countries on the 50th anniversary world tour. He also released a full-length solo album entitled “Take Cover” in 2014 and has had many roles on and off stage. Chad transitioned into arts management in 2015 with leadership roles at the McCallum

12

Chad Hilligus Theatre in Palm Desert before becoming Executive and Artistic Director of Performance Santa Fe in New Mexico. In July 2021, after an extensive national search, Chad Hilligus was named CEO to succeed the retiring Lynn Dickerson. Chad and his husband Mark found their way back to California to a welcoming Modesto. The challenge of reopening the Gallo Center after the pandemic was huge, but with a solid hand off from Lynn, a board led by Dr. Alex Mari and now Christina Gomez, and a stellar staff of industry pros, the transition has been a big success and the 23/24 season is in full swing, delivering many sold-out shows and offerings for our diverse population. If you haven’t had a chance to meet Chad, find a way to say hello at an event, but let’s get to know more about Chad now. ModestoView: How crazy is it that you are the CEO of a performing arts center where you once performed? Chad Hilligus: It was a full circle moment for sure. There was definitely a level of familiarity that made the transition a bit easier. MV: What was the biggest challenge in re-opening the Gallo Center after the pandemic? CH: Keeping up-to-date with changing federal and state guidelines, which created ongoing challenges with staff training and patron communication.

MV: When did you realize you wanted to be in arts management? CH: On tour, actually. I’d been on and off the road as a performer for more than a decade and my focus shifted. The goals I had for myself started to evolve and I knew I needed to make a change. I enrolled in online post-graduate courses in arts management and spent my entire final world tour with The Ten Tenors preparing to make the transition. MV: You have been a producer, performer, director, and recording artist over the years; what have you enjoyed the most? CH: I’m always looking for opportunities to learn and try new things, but I also discovered early on that I needed to build a broad skillset. This might be cliché, but the role I enjoyed the most was whatever I was doing at the time. MV: What was the role that gave you your biggest break? CH: Looking back over my career, there’s definitely a direct through line I can trace back to playing Tony in West Side Story. Your younger readers won’t even know what this is, but that happened because of Myspace. I was finishing out my contract as a resident artist with San Diego Opera back in 2008 and randomly logged into Myspace to delete my account when I noticed a message in my inbox from the producers for the 50th anniversary world

MV: How do you balance all of the tastes, genres and trends when planning programming at the Gallo Center? CH: Providing “arts for all” is at the heart of the Center’s mission. In order to accomplish that, it’s imperative that there’s something for everyone, every season. Not to oversimplify the process, but if we have calendar space for 100 presented shows and I have 25 different genre categories we’ve identified as a team that represent our diverse communities, then my goal is to program four acts in each category. It doesn’t always work out that way, but that’s the idea. MV: What would be your dream booking for the Gallo Center? CH: It’s really difficult to answer that without looking through the lens of the feasibility limitations of only having 1,248 seats. For instance, the number of people who ask me when we’re getting Michael Bublé is staggering. He’s right up there for me as well, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. MV: What has been your most pleasant surprise about living in Modesto? CH: How passionate people are about improving the quality of life and rallying to make good things happen. We’ve also made some very good friends. MV: What do you want our community to know about the Gallo Center? CH: The Center is here for you. We share that same passion to improve the quality of life throughout the San Joaquin Valley and we’re going to continue bringing the world right here to Modesto. We’re constantly adding new shows, so be sure to visit www. galloarts.org regularly for the latest news and updates.

MV: How has the transition to Modesto been for your husband Mark? Does he also work in the area? CH: Mark is a former diplomat with the British Foreign Service, moved to the U.S. in 1999 and is now a consultant for a major hospice pharmacy company based in Philadelphia. He’s traveled, lived, and worked in even more countries than I have, so he’s used to settling in to new places.

Christmas Tree Memories

By Harrison Power

HOLIDAY PARADE Saturday, December 2

One of the most exciting times and traditions of the holiday season, for the kid and kid at heart, is selecting the perfect family Christmas tree to take home for decoration. Yes the perfect tree can found at a local tree farm, tree lot, and elsewhere, but there is no denying the incredible dedication for those who commit to the task of cutting down their own Christmas tree. Wonderful memories of both holiday joy and at times desperation can be made with the whole family as you search for just the right tree, out of thousands of trees, while wading through the snow. And as it just so happens, you have an incredible opportunity to do just that right in Modesto’s own back yard: Stanislaus National Forest. Now offered for the second year, you can purchase a Christmas Tree Permit through the National Forest for just $2.50! As long as the tree meets National Forest tree requirements, and there is consensus that the tree will fit inside the house, then that tree can be your perfect family Christmas tree – just don’t forget the saw! To learn more about designated areas for cutting, access, and tree requirements, check out the details at https:// www.recreation.gov/tree-permits/ TP2648 to purchase you permit.

BIG VIEW

T ’is the season...

By Chris Murphy

Other than the big guy, Santa, no other commercial Christmas character looms larger than Clark W. Griswold, the ultimate family man. No one is more possessed to illuminate his house, take care of family and friends, “kith” and kin, host a wicked vintage RV in his suburban driveway, suffer upper management daily as he invents amazing new non-nutritive cereal varnishes while he dreams of a pool for his family. Pretty much sums it up for all of us. To “Griswold” your house is a verb and when it’s done right, you will see the Christmas star over the nitroglycerine plant. It just doesn’t get better. Well you know that this imaginary family has been lampooning and has be lampooned for 35 years now. Yes, amazingly enough, Christmas Vacation turns 35 years old this month and I think my viewings are in the hundreds and my daughAbigail and I ruin the dialog for everyone else watching. “Why is the carpet wet Todd? I don’t knoowww Margot” and the list goes on. Christmas Vacation is the gateway to the Christmas season at our house. We are fiercely devoted to the celebration of Thanksgiving, and Christmas and holiday décor do not appear until now. Some things are sacrosanct; like a real 1944 MaiTai, or an original mono pressing of Meet the Beatles. But in all of this hilarity, we realize it is our family that makes it fun, the desire to invite people and celebrate is something we all share, no matter how good or bad it goes. At the end of the day, we all clean up the front yard like Clark and Ellen and all have a good night and take a taste from our jelly of the month club. Thanks again to Matt Paine of Collins Electric for helping us make magic here in downtown Modesto for Rockin’ Holiday and agreeing to be our Clark Griswold on our cover. We appreciate Matt, the Collins team and our own Sierra Pacific crew for all they do. If you are craving some good ole holiday spirit, we have so many great ways for you to be the Clark that you can be, from finding your own Griswold family Christmas tree in the mountains, to ice skating, shopping local or experiencing some Rockin’ Snow, a holiday concert, or taste a nice frosted treat or a special holiday cocktail. So get your Wally Word cup ready and let’s enjoy a fun Modesto holiday. December 19, we will celebrate the legendary Christmas Vacation with a special Ugly Sweater showing and party at the Intermission. You can get spiked eggnog and other Intermission cocktails and snacks. Come out and join the fun and be your best Clark, Ellen or Cousin Eddie. No RV Parking. Intermission, $25, limited availability, 5 pm doors, 6:30 pm sweater contest and screening. www.thestate.org

On to the Christmas festivities, presents, presents, presents oh, and also being grateful for what we have and will become. The Plaza has music downtown Thursday-Saturday nights and plenty to do around town. The Blue Monday Band is playing Friday, Dec 8th with our house band and special guest playing those Christmas tunes that we tune up once a year. Blue Monday Party is looking for a new home folks, so any ideas give me a holler. Any venues that would work hosting the Blue Monday Band two times a month give me a holler and let the band play on! Would like to thank my fellow musicians for their dedication to the craft, Dave Hawks and Cortez Flores on Drums, Conrad Johnson and John Ady on Bass, Andrew Rosenblum and John Burt on Sax, Eric Benson and Pat Governor on Keys, and special guest Gene Radino on Guitar for making it happen. And thanks to

Drop Off In Fitness

Recently, there has been a noticeable decrease in fitness levels. The gym is less crowded, and during my runs, I no longer see the familiar faces I used to pass along the way. It’s understandable, though. With colder weather approaching, who wants to go outside? We tend to bundle up in sweaters and jackets, focusing more on fashion than fitness. However, it’s important to remember that during the holiday season, we often indulge in food and drinks, making it even more crucial to prioritize our fitness routines. In January, many people make resolutions to lose weight, resulting in packed gyms, at least

Year-End Charitable Giving: Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum

By Efren Martinez for the first three weeks. To break away from this January routine, consider joining a gym now. Start by purchasing new fitness equipment or setting new fitness goals. Don’t wait until January; take action in December. Stay ahead of the fitness game and maintain your momentum. Grandma worked hard all summer to rock that bikini. Don’t let your fitness routine slip away and have to work twice as hard in the new year to regain it. My advice is simple: just like a pet isn’t just for Christmas, your fitness shouldn’t be either. Fitness, like a new pet, is a lifelong commitment. Additionally, it’s important to mention that we are more likely to catch a cold or other illnesses during the winter. If you’re sick, stay home and avoid spreading your illness to others. Many things in life are meant to be shared, but sickness is not one of them. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

As the year comes to a close, it is the perfect time to reflect on the joy and impact that charitable giving can bring. Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum needs your support.

The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is not just a place to admire cars; it is also a hub of community engagement and education. By supporting our museum, you are not only preserving our classic car culture for future generations, but also investing in the cultural heritage of our community. Here are a few reasons why you should consider making a year-end charitable donation to the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum: 1 Fund Our Construction: The museum has many outstanding projects to complete at an expense in excess of $5 Million Dollars. Your donations will help bring our 50,000-square-foot space to completion, including the build-out of our new museum lobby, gift shop, welcome center, restrooms, exhibits, education center, event center, and more. All construction funds are spent with local contractors, reinvesting your donation into our local economy. 2 Community Engagement: The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is more than just a collection of cars; it actively engages with the community through various programs and events. From our kid’s activities to car shows, the museum provides opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and be inspired. Your donation will directly support these initiatives and help create memorable visitor experiences. 3 Supporting Local Economy: Charitable giving to the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum has a positive ripple effect on the local economy. Our museum attracts tourists and car enthusiasts from near and far, contributing to the growth of local businesses, restaurants, and hotels. By donating, you are not only supporting the museum but also fostering economic development in the community. 4 Tax Deductibility: Donations made to the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. As you plan your year-end finances, consider the benefits of making a charitable contribution that not only brings joy, but also provides potential tax advantages. 5 Satisfy IRA requirements: For those 70 1/2 or older, the IRS allows a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from your IRA to a nonprofit organization. You can donate up to $100,000 yearly to satisfy your required minimum distribution and avoid taxable income. Giving from your IRA is easy. Simply direct your IRA administrator to transfer the chosen amount directly to the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum. 6 Stanislaus Community Foundation: You can also donate to our Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum Fund at the Stanislaus Community Foundation. As you consider your year-end giving, we urge you to remember the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum and the impact it has on our community. Your generous donation will help preserve our shared community history, support community engagement, and contribute to the local economy.

Together, let’s make a difference by giving back.

Hey Modesto! Can you believe it? It’s finally December, and 2023 is coming to an end. I hope your year was filled with unforgettable memories. If you’re looking for fun things to do this holiday season, Modesto has you covered. “Modesto on Ice” recently opened up, and it’s probably one of the main activities I look forward to all year. I recently went with my friends to kick off the Christmas season. It’s the perfect spot to hang out with friends and family and create everlasting memories. For me, going there has become a holiday tradition. The venue is beautifully decorated with cozy Christmas lights, trees, and comfy chairs by the fire pits. The snack shack there also offers the most delicious hot chocolate! I can’t go without getting a cup of it. We’re so lucky to have this rink built every year for us, and it’s located downtown, in the heart of Modesto. I feel incredibly grateful

to live in a city that gives me the opportunity to ice skate every year. Fortunately, the rink stays open until January, so what are you waiting for? Head down to the “coolest place in town.” Will you be seeing the Nutcracker this year? Each December, Central West Ballet puts on a beautiful show at the Gallo Center. There will be shows from the 8th to the 17th of December. They always put on a fantastic show that is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit. Modesto’s annual “Celebrations of Lights Parade” will be on Saturday, December 2nd. The theme is “Toys, Trains, and Candy Canes,” and it begins at 5:30 pm. This has always been one of my favorite events that Modesto puts on. As a kid, I had the opportunity to participate in the parade with my school! I remember having an absolute blast. I love watching the different bands play on the floats and admiring the incredible decorations and effort people put into their floats. Let these holiday traditions be a reminder of the warmth and love that our city holds. I hope you enjoy the last month of 2023. Have a very merry Christmas, Modesto.
