All Day All Year The Indispensable Skincare Shield

*Consumer test and clinical test performed under dermatological supervision.

All day, all year

All day, all year, the face is exposed to multiple aggressions which are the number one cause of ageing. This is why Sisley, the expert in anti-ageing skincare, has created All Day All Year, a highly sophisticated skin care shield which will protect it from UVA and UVB rays which cause damage during all seasons even in the city. It also protects the skin from pollution and stress. For the first time, a revolutionary method of encapsulating filters, allows more than eight hour continuous protection all day, and perfect innocuity as the filters do not penetrate the skin, all year. Skin can therefore focus 100% of its natural energy on self-regeneration. Results have been clinically proven*. Day after day the skin becomes more toned, brighter, and firmer; lines are reduced and it is visibly rejuvenated.

Rudy Sotomayor was on top of the world. He was a rising makeup-virtuoso for the stars: Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson, Beyonce, Drew Barrymore, Halle Berry, Pamela Anderson and the list goes on and on. It was a fast paced, high profile life with benefits and perks. Rudy spent his time working for top fashion magazines, traveling the globe. But some stories have an unhappy middle. In November of 2007, Rudy’s world came to a halt when he Rudy Sotomayor was struck by a car in a Manhattan crosswalk. He suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for 2 months. More than a year later, he's still on the road to recovery. “It was God’s way of telling me to slow down.” Rudy says, looking back at his accident. Matrix Model Management’s Jacquelyn Willard and Jennifer Petti sat down with Rudy, his brother Frank and his dear friend Julie, to learn more about his amazing story. Frank, (Brother) speaking about Rudy’s Accident: "From the day of the accident, he was unconscious immediately. We all thought he wasn’t going to make it. One of his therapists (vocational therapist) asked Rudy what happened to him and the therapist ended up

being one of the people who witnessed the accident (which shows what a small world we live in). I quit my job as a flight attendant, and took over taking care of Rudy (along with Mom and Dad). There were always people there wanting to help Rudy. His friends in the industry were very supportive. He had to relearn everything, even swallowing- and had to be fed through a tube.

About a week after the accident, we received a phone call with two options for Rudy: remove part of his skull to give the brain more room to expand, or do nothing which will most likely not let Rudy survive another night. The choice of removing part of his skill still only gave us a 50/50 chance that he would make it. We decided to have the surgery done and it was the longest night ever. When the doctors came out telling us Rudy was stable we were so thankful. Thankfully, Rudy’s memory came back, “ I am still bi-lingual,” Rudy chimes in. All of his functions are back. He is still working on mobility and speech. His brain is still rewiring, there is still damage in the front part of his brain, but everyday he shows us miracle after miracle. His physical condition and

strength was really what kept him alive, if he wasn’t in good shape, he wouldn’t have made it. Before the accident, we never realized how important family is. As brothers, we are inseparable now, where as before, if we were in the same city for work, we would sometimes not make the time to see each other because of our busy schedules."

Aftermath:

After Rudy's rehab, he really didn’t know what to do with his life. One of the therapists put in a call to cosmetology schools in the area, and some were interested in him. Rudy chose one to go to and put together a presentation for the many young, aspiring make-up artists. Rudy gave his presentation and it was so inspiring that one student who was planning to drop out after her dad passed away, continued on. Rudy coached the students prior to a statewide competition for make-up artists and all 4 of his students won.

Photo: Rick Day at SBartists

Rudy continues to do makeup but is now focusing on being an inspiration for other people. He now helps students in technical schools, helping them build skills and instilling confidence in them to follow their dreams. Rudy has become an inspiration to others and a mentor. RUDY’S INTERVIEW: Q. How has the accident changed your life? A. The accident changed my life completely. It’s amazing out of something so ugly and scary, came blessing after blessing. I know that God has a plan for me and that was his way of telling me to wake up and smell the coffee. Before my accident all I concentrated on was work. Now I appreciate my family and loved ones and all that life has to offer. Q. What drew you to wanting to become a make-up artist?

A. I actually wanted to be an artist; I was always painting and taking art classes. I never went to a make-up school. One day my high school art teacher told me to change the canvas to a face. That’s how becoming a make-up artist let me express my artistic abilities on a face. My first job as a make-up artist actually consisted of me using colored pencils to paint the faces of black and white headshots for a photographer I worked for. Q. How do your editorial/high fashion clients differ from your commercial clients? A. The editorial/high fashion clients allow me to be more creative because that industry likes expressing art. The commercial clients are really all about what they want and I just produce their vision. Q. How did you build your prestigious client list?

Photo: Rick Day at SBartists

A. Work, work and more work. I was constantly on the go trying to do another job and network with everyone in the industry. If a client liked me they would call me to do another job and refer me to other people, which eventually led to celebrity clientele. Q. What is your favorite aspect about this field (make-up artist)? A. The traveling. I am fortunate enough to have a job that requires a lot of traveling. I have gotten to see so many beautiful places; I lived in Europe for four years. There is something special about each and every place I have been to. Q. What is your advice to all the aspiring make-up artists out there? A. Follow your dream and find a focus. It’s best to choose which field you want to work in (editorial, high fashion, commercial work). Then you can cultivate your talent with a focus. Q. Which field do you prefer?

A. I prefer high fashion because it is where I get to be most creative. The commercial field doesn’t allow an artist to be as creative. Q. What do you consider most important in your life? A. My family. They are amazing and I don’t know where I would be without them. My brother, Frank should be my manager. He is always there for me looking out for my best interest. Q. Do you have any stories about your celebrity clientele? A. One singer tried telling me how to do her make-up (I don’t want to mention her name) but I asked her, “Do I tell you how to sing?” That shut her right up, ha-ha. Her make-up ended up coming out beautiful and she called Photo: Rick Day at SBartists me so many times after that. I actually ended up doing her last album cover. I will mention how sweet Beyonce is. When I did her make-up for album cover, we ended up salsa dancing in the studio. She really knows how to have a good time. Q. What is the best feature a model can have in order for you to work efficiently? A. The model must have good skin, it is absolutely essential. Good skin and features to work with allows me to do anything with the make-up. Q. What is your plan for the future? A. Getting better, staying focused and enjoying life even better than before! He quotes Confucious - “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but rising every time we fall.”

Sekou Carradine He's been praised by Giorgio Armani as "Bellisimo," has left long-lasting impressions as a spokesperson and supermodel, and possesses acting and television hosting talent. Sekou Carradine is not just a Belgian chocolate-skinned beauty, but a traditional American innovator, producing results for the most respected brands in the fashion industry. While attending the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Carradine was discovered by the Candy Ford modeling agency. Immediately whisked to Milan, Sekou's career would span over nine years, producing steady, high-end fashion work. during just one week in Milan, Carradine started making his mark in the indistry, opening runway shows for giants like Giorgio Armani, before returning home to the United States.

Immediately upon his return, major advertisers like Abercrombie & Fitch, Perry Ellis, Nautica Sport and Tommy Hilfiger, sought out Sekou for his clean, striking features and his ability to engage audiences. Shot by world-renowned photographers Walter Chin, Arthur Algort, David LaChappelle, Steven Meisel, Arnaldo Anya, Ben Watts and Peter Lindhberg, the recently discovered model became the face for America's model industry. Overwhelmed with his all-American, handsome looks and that killer smile, he landed over twelve national campaigns, including: TAG Heuer, Brooks Brothers, Liz Claiborne, Benetton, Kenneth Cole, Gap, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Sean John, BMW, J. Crew, and Banana Republic. One of the major indications of Carradine's rise to success was the controversial Abercrombie shoot shot by world reknown photographer Bruce Weber, featured side-by-side with Ashton Kutcher and Tom Welling ("Smallville"). Another symbol of strength and leadership came with two back-to-back appearances in GQ Magazine, a rare occurrence for an African American model. Throughout seven years of taking the fashion industry by storm, Carradine invested in his acting passion by attending theater school at William Esper studios. Pursuing acting work within independent films since then, Carradine has been groomed for Hollywood screens and television hosting assignments. The multitalented actor has been featured in Code Magazine, Black Woman Magazine, Honey Magazine and was also filmed for E television's Fashion File "Where the boys Are." It may seem that Carradine has already reached the top, but this is just the beginning. Embraced by Milan, American fashion campaigns and runways, Carradine's next step is making a mark within the film industry. http://www.myspace.com/scarradine http://twitter.com/scarradine

& Looks

Modeling was the most far fetched idea for this Polish-African who was born & raised in Oklahoma. This certified tomboy marched to a different beat. Diane Capozzi was adopted into a white, extremely educated, religious, conservative family growing up in an environment practically hidden from the opportunities of modeling. Her father was a biochemistry professor, her mother was a chemistry graduate, and she has two older brothers, so it is no shock that Diane either had her nose in the books or dirt under her nails. “I grew up in my brothers’ hand-me-down Tough Skin jeans and old, used sneakers.” I distinctly remember my mother saying, “live a simple life and take pride in being frugal”. Sprouting at an early age, Diane was taller than her first grade teacher and almost 5’9” at 9 years old. “I was clumsy, moved my body like a bull in a china store. I hated it then, but didn’t know how much it would come back to help in life and I definitely didn’t belong in this southern town.” Diane’s mother started her in sports, gymnastics and ballet, in hopes she would learn body awareness, move more gracefully, and reduce the awkwardness. Naturally, she gravitated towards sports and excelled in track & field, so.ball, basketball, but her real love and skill was discovered when she joined the swim team at age 5. Swimming became her entire universe for the next 15+ years. Through her dedication, relentless training and spending several hours in the pool a day, Diane quickly became a nationally-ranked swimmer. The discipline and extreme work ethic in sports and school paid off and Diane received a full scholarship to attend Drury University. She found much success, graduating cum laude and even qualifying for the Olympic trials. At her father’s request, Diane went on to complete a Masters’ degree in cardiac rehabilitation.

Finally, coming into her own and feeling confident, Diane was ready to sign with a small modeling agency in Tulsa. Her first gig was on a boat! The opportunity to work on the cruise ship was a way out of Oklahoma! Being on stage everyday and speaking on the microphone opened her eyes and she soon realized how much she enjoyed the limelight and performing. Further exploring the world, Diane lived in Hungary, England, Bermuda & the Cayman Islands where she always found representation. This afforded her the opportunity to gain extensive experience in the industry. Diane started with print work and runway for several boutiques and clothing lines, commercials, even ad campaigns for the Department of Tourism, and acted in a short, independent film. Back on American soil, Diane did not waste any time getting agents to represent her in Miami. “This was the first city I did commercial acting and modeling full-time and took it seriously. Everyday I worked several hours researching, learning more about the industry and getting work”. Some of her work encompassed print, commercial, runway with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, AutoZone, Sports Authority, Sebastian Wella, Ujena Swimwear, even, Miami Fashion week.

Now living in Boston with her husband, they own and run an entertainment company booking over 200 events a year. “Boston has been a great city for me and helped advance my modeling career. My opportunities have variety and are challenging.” Clients include Reebok, New Balance, Saucony, Boston Magazine, Hasboro, Charles Nolan, Escada, Rhode Island’s Monthly Bride, Especially Yours, Eleme, Planet Aid, The Improper Bostonian, Lelite to name a few. Diane was also a finalist in 2007, making it to the 3rd round for the new tv series, “She’s Got the Look”. She will audition again next year in hopes of taking one more gigantic step in her modeling career. Now the kicker, Diane is a stunning, athletic 38-year old who is working her dream! “I may have gotten a late start in the game. When I was younger, I didn’t possess the knowledge or confidence like I do now and I am blessed with more opportunities than most models. It is remarkable how much work is available for the women/sophisticate division and commercial acting, remember ‘better late than never’. I am relentless in the pursuit to secure modeling and commercial projects until I am physically unable. I am looking for anything that challenges me and makes in stronger as a person and model. Never give up, keep casting, auditioning, casting, auditioning…… This is the most amazing, unbelievable journey I am living!” Next step is securing further representation in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York City and becoming a trained DJ!

I would describe myself as easily approachable, generous, lovable, vivacious with endless amounts of energy & motivated. My friends would describe me as bubbly, up-beat, disciplined, goofy. When I am not working with my husband or pursuing the modeling, my hobbies including volunteering at the humane society, kickboxing, running, weight li.ing, swimming, riding our Harley with my husband, cooking, photography, making cards/scrap booking, gardening/ floral arranging, & walking my poochie!

I am sitting at my computer trying to read my email so I can plan my week. "mom, my

brother won't stop bothering me" my 7 year old daughter yells from the other room. "She is not sharing!" my five year old screams in protest. The commotion of them fighting gets our shiht zu all worked up and now he is barking wildly....uuugh not again. Laptop in tow I walk into their bedroom and ask them to please make amends because I have a crazy schedule to get under control and the noise is giving me a major headache. This is going to be a brutal week.

I was a child of hippie parents who turned missionaries when I was born . I spent a good portion of my childhood in numerous foreign countries helping those in need. I travelled to South America, Africa, the Philippines, and all over the USA. I cannot call any one place home, somewhat like a modern day bedouin. I was married to a man in our church at a very young age and continued to help serving other until my mid twenties. One day I had a epiphany and decided I wanted more to my life than working a church circle. I moved to the Northwest and went back to school working toward becoming a midwife and eventually a nurse. always intreigued from a very young age by black and white photography and the human form. I would sneak off to the library and hide with a book on B&W nudes. I was astounded at the beauty of the human form void of all clothing. Remember I was raised with long dresses and sometimes head scarves and the body was a temple for other not to see. Just viewing the beauty of the human body in its natural form was so fulfilling. I remembered that childhood joy and decided to take both a

I had a huge passion for gardening and would a lot of times create gardens for friends of friends. There was a add in our local paper asking us to send in a picture of yourself in your garden . OK this was easy. Maybe I would get a free load of plant or a gift certificate of out it from a local plant nursery? We had just bought a house and I had transformed a very ugly back yard into a amazing oasis. I loved having a edible landscaped yard for both beauty and harvesting to eat. I sent in picture. Four days later I was called and requested to come to this casting office? This was weird. This is about my garden right? Ok whatever. They told me to stand behind the camera and give them 30 seconds on how I transformed a mess into this amazing garden today. I WAS SO NERVOUS. But I remembered what my modeling teacher had taught me. Act like the camera is just one of your good friends. I talked for nearly three minutes on gardening, it

was a passion so it was easy. I thanked them and left.

Five days later I get a call, Congrats you won!. Nice won what? They wanted me to be the face their gardening department advertisement. Sweet! SO I did shoot and voice over. Within two months I was the poster child for the gardening section and on billboards and on tv. Not bad

for my first time. The company that had my audition asked me to sign on as a extra, which was fine because this would give me more opportunities to become more comfortable with myself.

I moved to NYC three years ago for personal reasons. I was still doing a lot of extra work on sets. I had to get a fulltme regular job to support myself and my two small children, so modeling is just a hobby that helps me support my little family. I went to a show case for agents the first month I was here and I was picked up by 2 agents right way. campaign. I was again on billboards, magazines and web. I was at the the time living in times square subletting a very tiny apt. I was taking my kids for a walk when I happened to look up at a new billboard I noticed and was in disbelief. There was a picture of me about 8 stories tall on the Nasdeque Building in times square. NO WAY. My kids were stoked! "Mommy your so big!". Wow not bad for my second big job.

NYC is a brutal competition of wonderful talent and I had two major things against me at all times . I am older and petite. I am fine with because modeling is a outlet for my passion for photography and it helps pay bills. It can be long and tiring on set all day with people pulling at your hair, fussing over your clothes and constantly touching up your make up . I have continued to work humbly as a beauty model, artist fine art model and what comes my way. Its a hobby and yet I really enjoy shooting when I get a chance. It like therapy, humbling, exciting and I get to play dress up for a day. Being a single parent, juggling 2 jobs and modeling can be a challenge but when the week is over its I know I

worked really hard Photo: Blaise Hayward for my money. A lot of people are shocked when I show up for a casting because they assume from my pictures I am super tall and I am from Brazil or Italy and sometimes shocked by my array of ink. NO one is perfect but if I can portray a stunning elegant women in my pictures then my client are happy! People tend to always ask me why I do not do this all the time for a living. Well I have never been given that opportunity yet. I have kids -they always come first and every thing else works around them. Some ask what would be your dream job. Thats a no brainer! I would love to be the face of David Yuram-yes I know its a dream. Or I would love to be picked up by a large cosmetic company to portray the older naturally lovely women. My hobbies are Bikrim yoga, running (doing the ING NYC marathon this year-wooohoo), traveling and of course photography. Height: Weight: Measurements: Shoe size: Hair color: Hair length: Eye color:

Model Venture Magazine (www.modelventure.com) Information For Models Who Are Serious About Modeling modelventure.com

Angela

Heather picture by loveliveflirt.com

Angela Roberge did not grow up thinking she would become a model. She was an awkward child with braces, glasses and a height that rivaled the boys. “I was definitely not the popular child growing up; grade school was not a fun place for me”. Further more, raised on a small farm in rural Alberta, Canada, she was taught that school was to be her only priority. “There was no such thing as photo shoots or dressing up where I come from, just tom boy stuff like dirt bikes and quads. My mom always told me to finish school first above anything else”. Focusing on school, however, was not always easy. “When I graduated high school, it was a time when everyone went straight to work on oil rigs or other such high paying jobs and did not bother with college. I knew I Photo: Nic wanted something more than either of those”. Angela still managed to maintain focus on her studies, however, and moved to Edmonton for University. Edmonton offered a new culture in fashion and modeling to her that

she had never seen. “By the time I moved I had started shedding my ugly duckling persona and wanted to see what Edmonton had to offer me. I was told several times that I should model because of my height, so I thought why not”. Angela got her first taste of modeling at age 19 when she joined a modeling website and was recruited for a lifestyle shoot. “There was something so enthralling about playing another person for a bit and seeing the great results”. After this shoot, she was hooked on modeling. “I just wanted to do more and more shoots just to see what I could do, it was addictive!” Angela did not give up her schooling. For the next four years after, she did shoots on the weekends and school during the week. “It was hard balancing the two out, but I knew in the end it would be a good idea to have a couple career options”. Finishing with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, she was ready to peruse some more modeling options. Angela decided not

to sign with an agency. “I did not really sign with any agencies throughout this time just because the market was such that I could get plenty of jobs without any help. Although this really required you to sell yourself, you get really good at it after awhile”.

Photo: J. P. Erickson

The last several years have been the most lucrative for Angela. “With more time to focus on what I enjoy doing, I really produced some great shots and got to do some amazing promotional model events. I think my favorite would have to be being on the Miss Edmonton Indy Race Team last year. It was so much fun to walk out on the racetrack and meet some great people. Modeling has really allowed me to do things that I would normally never get to do and I love it”. Angela recently went to Florida in April and plans to doing more traveling in the near future. “I think it is essential for models to travel and diversify their portfolios. If you stay in one area, you can really stagnate and get bored with the types of places and things you can do. Where I come from, there is not as much hot weather, so outdoor shoots are less common. When I went to

Florida, it’s all I did, it was so much fun. The resulting shots from traveling are always great. And who wouldn’t want a vacation to see a new place?” Just how long is she planning on continuing with modeling? “I think that I got a later start on the whole thing just because of the restrictions that school had, but I’m finding that my look is evolving as I get older. I’m still fairly young and I like the work now more than I did when I was younger. I am getting more comfortable with myself in general as a woman and this comes across in the pictures. I don’t think I’ll necessarily stop modeling altogether at any time, I think what I do will just change. It is important to always be comfortable with yourself and what you are doing. I love what I do and am always up for what is coming next. Stayed tuned, it’s only going to get better!”

Discoveries of

Matrix Proportions

New models are signed everyday.

The challenge is that few make it big. So when success stories happen, we need to take note. The question is not “was she pretty enough?” because being beautiful is only one component of making it in modeling. The real question is “was she/he prepared”?

Matrix Model Management has been responsible for the discovery of these new models for ’07, who have all been signed to top agencies: Lauren - Ford NY Jennifer - Red Thailand Danny - Elite Atlanta

What do these models all have in common? They were supported, coached and/or walked in by our company, Matrix Model Management (www.matrixmodelsny.com), the same company that publishes this magazine. They understood that gaining insight and knowledge about how to best approach their goal was important; and that the best way to

go about becoming a real model was to talk with one. We will be featuring them and other models we’ve signed with agencies in coming issues. Their stories will be familiar to you. They are regular people who took the initiative to make it happen; and had the wisdom to ask for help.

Health

Help Yourself to Health by Jordan Ciambrone, M.S. Kinesiology Do you ever wake up in the morning with puffy eyes, swollen joints, and feeling more lethargic than a black bear in hibernation? Do you find yourself yearning for the mornings you feel energized, and ready to conquer the day? Have you ever taken a systematic look at your dietary habits to see what may be adding to or subtracting from your overall sense of well being?

Let’s trace how you feel this morning back to how clean your nutrition was yesterday. Did you eat lots of salty foods? Maybe that’s why you’re retaining more water than the Delaware Water Gap! How about that soda or candy you reached for around 4 PM instead of enlightening yourself with a yoga class? Perhaps the sugary foods are to blame for your sluggish behavior, and those deep dark circles under your eyes.

All guilt trips aside, the point is that your day to day nutrition plays a pivotal role in physical, mental, and emotional well being. Try introducing the following super foods, spices and health practices into your daily regimen to reach your picture perfect self! (model weight- use whatever appropriate model jargon fits). Diminish inflammation and detoxify! Spice up your veggie dishes with herbs and spices! Ginger, turmeric, and rosemary, have antiinflammatory properties that may all help support healthy joint function. Too tired to work out? Don’t sweat it; hit the steam baths or saunas! They may help the body eliminate toxins, but be sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate yourself. Avoid excess salt, sugar, dairy and refined white and wheat products, as these may lead to inflammation. Clear skin and zap zits Take a trip to sea world twice a week! Salmon and tuna are loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids and they are high in vitamin D. Eating fish is a wise choice because Omegas are good for your brain, and our amphibian friends are a great source of Vitamin D. Although the sun's rays provide a sufficient amount of vitamin D, our unhealthy human habits have wreaked havoc on the ozone layer. Excessive exposure to the sun makes for sun spotted skin, and in extreme cases melanoma and skin cancer! Eliminate this whole paragraph if you need to cut material: (Sometimes hormonal imbalances and stress manifest in pitiful pimples. Try applying tea tree oil, an Australian import and powerful disinfectant. Tea tree oil is a good treatment for fungal infections of the skin. Apply pure tea tree oil two or three times a day. )

Renergize – Go Retro to get your energy fix! According to ancient Incan folk lore Maca, or Peruvian ginsing was used to increase stamina, energy, and sexual function. Peru doesn’t do it for you? Go for the Goji! These berries have been used for thousands of years by herbalists in China, Tibet and India. The berry or extract is purported to protect the liver, help eyesight, improve sexual function and fertility, boost immune function, improve circulation, and promote longevity. Goji berries are rich in antioxidants, but be mindful of marketing schemes! There are actually few published clinical trials in humans. Strengthen: Amino acids and proteins are the building blocks of your very beautiful being! Experiment with different sources of protein until you find the right one for you. You might find it beneficial to decrease animal sources and try plant based proteins like soy, rice, or spirulina. Spirulina contains high amounts of protein, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids and vitamins and minerals.

The truth of the matter is that you’ve probably come across every one of these tips at some point, but the proof is in the execution! Make it easy on yourself to make healthy choices. Go food shopping in a positive mindset, and satiated with a healthy meal to avoid unhealthy or impulsive decisions. If you feel overwhelmed try just ONE of the above health practices for a month, and see if you notice a difference. If you actually experience a positive change, you are more likely to sustain the behavior since selfmastery experiences increase one’s self-efficacy for a particular behavior. May we all multiply our sense of self-efficacy toward health, and help ourselves to a heaping of healthy habits!
