NL Envirothon Current Issue Sustainable Large Scale Land base Management Learning Objectives 1.) Define Protected Lands and crown lands. What percentage of the province of NL is in Protected state? Identify and differentiate between protected area types. Understanding of the rights to usage of these areas. 2.) Define Newfoundland ecological sites; understand these protected ecological processes and definitions. 3.) Familiar with the principles behind Gros Morne National Park’s Management plan to maintain a Large scale, nonfragmented and ecologically sound landscape. 4.) An understanding of stakeholders as well as the stakeholder approach to management within different land communities (wetland, riparian, Protected and forested areas). A sense of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) used by land managers. 5.) An understanding of our large mammals and interactions within their natural ecosystems. Familiarity with Newfoundland and Labrador’s Species at Risk. 6.) Definition of the historical land use of Newfoundland. Understanding of our major industries in the province (Forestry, fishing, oil/gas, energy and tourism).
