Editor’s Note Happy New Year! 2014 is here and now is the time to leave behind all of the bad that 2013 introduced into your life. With the new year brings new challenges and new rewards. So strap yourself in. It should be one hell of a ride. MLK weekend is fast approaching and this would be a great time to reflect on his life and legacy, and weave a little bit of it into your life. What is your dream? What are you doing to make it a reality? What are the steps necessary to propel you into your destiny? In this issue, we have spotlighted some of the great music artists within our community. Many are established artists with a vast catalog of music available for your enjoyment. Some are new artists trying to find their place in the industry. It was a wonderful thing to be able to spotlight so many artists from our community, openly representing themselves. There were a large number of artist I could not spotlight because of the space available, but I will do my best to shine the light on them in future issues of Mocca Magazine. I’m very proud to be able to provide a platform to spotlight all of the wonderful and creative members of our community. And I take it on as my obligation to uplift each and every one of them so that they can get to their promised land, wherever that might be for each of them. Please feel free to send me any comments or suggestions to comments@moccamag.com Rodney L. Berry

Mocca Magazine Music Spotlight

Beyoncé It almost seemed like magic when Beyoncé shocked the world by dropped her new album just before midnight on December 05, 2013. The album “Beyoncé” was released with 13 new songs and 17 new videos. Sources state that iTunes received the album one day before the release of the album to avoid any leaks. Everyone associated with the album’s release had to sign an iron-clad non-disclosure agreement. Radar Online reported on the timeline for producing this album and its 17 videos, all done during her “Mrs. Carter World Tour”. They list the video shoots took place in eight different cities and on 4 different continents. They also report that one of the first shoots was for “Pretty Hurts”. It took place at Bishoup Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY. A few days later she and Jay-Z were in Miami filming the “Drunk In Love” video on August 15. After two concert dates in England, she was back in Brooklyn filming the “XO” video at Coney Island. That shoot drew a lot of attention when a couple got trapped on the ferris wheel. Two days later, Beyonce performed in Philadelphia and then went to South America for two weeks of concert dates. On Sept 17, she filmed the video for “Blue” in Trancoso, Brazil. She then performed in Brasilia that same night. After finishing concert dates in South America, she performed in Mexico until September 26. She then flew to Houston 9

Mocca Magazine Music Spotlight Beyoncé to film the video for “Blow”. By October 2, she was in Oakland, NJ filming scenes for “Heaven” Then on October 10, she was filming scenes for a video at the Greenham Common bomb shelter in London. On October 13 she and Jay-Z filmed scenes for “Partition” at the Crazy Horse Strip Club in Paris, France. On October 16, she was in Auckland, New Zealand kicking off the austrailian leg of her tour. On Oct. 20, her crew filmed scenes for “No Angel” near the Cuney Homes projects on Houston’s South Side. Three days later, she filmed her scenes for the video in Brunswick, Australia. She finished the Australian tour on Nov 9th. By Nov 11th, she was filming “Haunted” in Los Angeles. On November 13th, she was filming “Superpower”. On Nov. 19, she was back in New York filming “Jealous”. RadarOnline listed this timetable for 11 of the 17 videos on the visual album; so somewhere in this timetable she managed to film videos for “Bow Down”, “Flawless”, “Ghost”, “Mine”, “Rocket”, and “Yoncé”. This feat has made her an even busier woman than has been accounted for thus far. But it all paid off. Her exclusive release with iTunes netted her the number one spot in 104 counties and 2 sales records. The album went platinum within a week of release. And it was only available thru iTunes at that time.

The Back of the Closet

You Should Always Bring Fire to the Ice Castle by Rafael Solece 2013 was a trying year for a lot of people including me. It seemed everyone I met was fighting some type of emotional, mental, or spiritual battle; a lot of peoples lives were in perpetual change and disarray. Even for me a lot of the things that I expected to accomplish or the success that I expected to achieve last year was over shadowed by the constant struggles I faced. My money was never right, my career was stagnant, and my emotional stability was always threatened. I lost friends, I hurt people, and I failed myself in a lot of ways; and although I would like to think of 2013 as just not being my year, the truth of the matter is that I did not enter 2013 prepared for a fight. I walked into 2k13 thinking that I was going to be faced with the same challenges and that because I already knew what those challenges would be, I kept the same mentality. Unfortunately for me my old way of thinking did not help me in that New Year.

Clearly this was a problem that a lot of people faced in 2013. Most of us entered the New Year with the presumption that because we had challenges the year before and because we had not conquered those challenges that they would just spill over into the New Year. We assumed that if they spilled over into the New Year, we would have an opportunity to face those old challenges with new ideas and a renewed spirit. What we did not expect was that not only would we face our old demons, but new ones would show up to the battle. Sure, we would deal with joblessness, but we would also have to fight homelessness and depression. Sure you would deal with relationship problems or the lack thereof, but you would also lose friends and family. Who said life was fair? It’s a common mistake that we have all made; thinking that life is going to be a crystal star. Thinking that we can deal with new problems in the same ole way; HELL, you can't even deal with old problems in the same manor. 15

The Back of the Closet

You Should Always Bring Fire to the Ice Castle by Rafael Solece What we sometimes don't see is that our lives, our destinies; don't follow any particular set of rules. Life is forever changing the game; and the challenges that life brings our way aren't simple or textbook. Life has a tendency to think outside of the box. But it is imperative that we understand when life starts to get creative with us, we have to get creative with Life. It is ridiculously INSANE to think that we can do the same things and get better results. No, we have to go crazy, get inspired, and make insane decisions to deal with the insanity of Life. People say all the time that you should never bring a knife to a gun battle, but I say you should always bring fire to an ice castle. How in the hell do you expect to get into that bitch if you don't burn it to the ground.

In 2014, I challenge everyone who reads this article to think of this year as an opportunity to go crazy. Stop being scared to challenge yourself. Do things that you would never do. Take those risks that you normally would never take. We have tricked ourselves into thinking that there are rules in life that we have to follow. That is a lie. There are no rules; there is no specific way you are supposed to conduct yourself. Life is constantly changing. Our minds are the only things that try so hard to stay the same. But, evolution is a good thing. You should evolve in 2014. Be a better you. They say wars are won on the battlefield; life is the place that we fight most of those battles.

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl:

I’ve been dating this guy for about 1 and a half years. His job has him traveling for long periods of time to different cities. He has been gone for the last 5 months. His job has changed and he is now about to stay permanently in our city. He is so excited that we can finally see each other on a daily basis. I have messed around with other guys but always considered him to be my number one. While we will continue to live separately, I’m not sure I’m ready for him to be in the same city with me for an extended time frame. The guy I’ve been messing around with for the last few months is amazing. The sex is great. He is so cool to hang with. And he’s not looking for anything serious. How do I handle this. I don’t think the new guy will continue to be with me with him being around so much. But I ‘m not ready to give him up yet. What should I do? Dear Mr. Have It All; Sounds like you have a case of is the bird in the hand worth more than the one rockin the bushes. From your letter, it sounds like guy #1 is ready to see where your relationship with him can go and guy #2 is just looking for a good time. You might be able to juggle them both for a little while until you can figure out what is more important to you. I think guy #1 would be willing to keep thing slow while you get adjusted to being together on a more regular basis. I’m also sure that if guy #2 is only looking for a good time, he’s not too worried about what other irons you have on your fire, as long as his remains hot. Just set a boundary with guy #1 so that you maintain some of your free time. Then you’ll have time to spend with guy #2. If you juggle this right, You can keep them both for a little while. Just don’t get greedy. This won’t last forever. Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. Or one will be made for you. And you might not like that one.

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: I just found out that my boyfriend of one year is cheating on me. He has been messing around with this guy in his fraternity. This guy is married and his wife recently had a baby. I see the situation as a distraction for the married man but I don’t know how to handle this. My man has always been attentive to me and only recently did I begin to see the change in him. I’m not one to try and make someone promise to leave the other guy alone, because I know if someone wants to cheat, they will make it happen. I have fallen in love with this guy and I believe he has fallen in love with me. I just think we might have a different definition of what being in love means and how that effects your actions. I believe that he feels its ok to cheat as long as home is being taken care of. I feel that because of what you have at home, you should not cheat. How would you handle this situation? This is the first time I’ve dealt with this with him. I really don’t want to be in a relationship where I’m always wondering if my man is out cheating. Dear My man has another Man: From your letter, it sounds like you think your man is just cheating for the hell of it. The first thing you need to do is find out if that is really the case. You also need to get on the same page as your man about the components of your relationship, because if you don’t you will always be in the dark about his actions. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, but your love for this man is clouding your vision. I suggest you get a clear vision of what you have and it will be easier to make a decision about what to do next. It will be easier to decide what you can put up with when you know the whole story. If you have a question or situation that you would like Aunt Pearl to share some of her knowledge with you, send your letter to askauntpearl@moccamag.com or you can submit the letter from the comments page at www.moccamag.com.
