The essence of “green holidays” is a tradition at the Arboretum, indoors and out. The Great Hall of Trees in the Oswald Visitor Center features an encore “Poinsettia Tree;” and gracing the tree top (thanks to generous donors, Arboretum Foundation Trustee Don Ryks and his wife Mary Anne) is the Star of Minnesota glass sculpture by artist Craig Mitchell Smith. Fragrant pines festooned with natural ornaments and a whimsical “snowflake tree” round out the display. The “shop local” green tradition by our Gift Store features many Minnesota-based products, including jewelry, home décor, food, books, cards, framed art and more. Outdoors, a new, don’t-miss green tradition is the Haggerty Pine Walk along Three-Mile Drive. It showcases the Arboretum’s nationally certified pine collection with a marvelous interpretive station (see page 3). At the heart of “green holidays” is the spirit of sharing. Weekends feature local musical groups sharing their talents. Holiday teas, Sunday brunches and the new Sunday Suppers (Dec. 21 and Jan. 18) beckon family and friends to share time together. Through the recent Gala in the Gardens and with the Arboretum Campaign, we are blessed to receive gifts from private donors who wish to share and preserve the Arboretum as a “green environment” of discovery, learning and renewal, for generations to come. Thank you. Happy “Green” Holidays! See you at the Arboretum.

Pine Walk Offers a Dose of ‘Green Therapy’ Barbara DeGroot Public Relations Specialist

Winter offers a unique opportunity to experience an Arboretum hidden “treasure” located just a few steps off Three-Mile Drive: the Haggerty Pine Walk. Because motorized traffic is not allowed on the drive in winter (except for Arboretum maintenance vehicles), the season is a great time to explore the scenic roadway on foot. Pick a sunny winter day, bundle up and head out into the invigorating, crisp air. About halfway along Three-Mile Drive, just beyond the “sleeping” dahlia trial gardens, you’ll discover the Pine Walk. Measuring over 1,000 ft. in distance, this winding, cement-block pathway meanders through the Arboretum's acclaimed and lovely Pine Collection. Along the walkway you will see engaging interpretive signage and a large, attractive sculpture resembling a pine tree trunk. Visitors can enjoy looking at several images through the windows of the structure or walk inside and peruse the accompanying displays and info on the tree species. Did you know the Arboretum’s Pine Collection has been widely lauded and recognized as a “National Collection” by the North American Plant Collections Consortium? It is the first and only pine collection in the country to be recognized for the depth of plant diversity and significance to the preservation

and collection of pine genomes. The 14-acre collection is home to 300 specimens, representing 22 species and 12 cultivars. The Pine Walk continues toward the Maze Garden and Ornamental Grass collection where it connects with the Jaffray Edible Pathway and conveniently loops back toward the dahlia garden. Experiencing the Pine Collection provides a therapeutic dose of “greenery” in the gray palette of winter. Savor the stately, tall white pines, the native red pines and other cold-hardy species, including the Korean pine and the Swiss stone pine. You might even be inspired to add a few of these stately evergreens to your home landscape! The Pine Walk was made possible by a generous gift from Dan and Ruth Haggerty (a former Arboretum Foundation Trustee.) A previous gift from Barbara Spannaus funded an adjoining portion. Read more: “Conifers For Gardens” – comprehensive and most current reference on conifers for gardens. Richard L. Bitner, $59.95; “Conifers” – all you need to know about conifers at a glance in one handy and superbly illustrated manual. Andrew Mikolajski, $9.99; and “Life Cycle of a Pine Tree” – children’s book designed to excite and inform young people about the wonders of plant cycles. Jason Cooper, $22.95 – all available in the Gift Store (612-301-7619).

Hit the Trails for Winter Fun Whether you “swoosh” along tracked ski trails or “crunch” along on snowshoes, you can enjoy the serene beauty of winter on Arboretum trails. Just pick your gear of choice, then stop by the Visitor Center info desk for a trail map (and optional snowshoe rental) and get outside for a refreshing workout! The Arboretum boasts eight miles of cross-country ski trails and eight miles of snowshoe trails that meander through 1,200-plus acres of woodland, wetland, prairie and open fields. The ski trailhead is located just east of the Snyder Building, near the Staff Parking Lot (however, please park in the visitor lots). You can choose from easy to difficult trails that mainly course through the eastern grounds, with the exception of the Prairie Trail that extends westward. The snowshoe trailhead is located just west of the Oswald Visitor Center (which conveniently offers snowshoe rentals). Options include traversing the wooded areas along the southern shore of Wood Duck Pond and continuing to the Western Loop or Western Ridge Trail. Additional trails are found south and west of Three-Mile Drive. Please stay on trails and follow directional signs. It is advised that you ski or snowshoe with a companion as the Arboretum doesn't have a ski patrol. If you're new to snowshoeing, check out the Arboretum Outdoors with Hoigaard's event on Friday, Dec. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Oswald Visitor Center. Arboretum and Hoigaard's staff will guide you on group snowshoe hikes with free use of snowshoes, provided courtesy of Hoigaard's. No reservations necessary.

WINTER GARDENING TIPS In the midst of a bone-chilling Minnesota winter, it's refreshing to look ahead to the flowers of summer. January and February are a perfect time for brushing up on your gardening skills and devising a new landscaping plan. Check out the Arboretum's adult class offerings – we have a great stable of teachers and interesting class topics. HERE ARE SOME OTHER JANUARY GARDENING TIPS: • Keep your indoor plants clean. Use a soft, wet rag to wipe away any dust that accumulates on leaves. This will enhance the photosynthesis process for your light-hungry plants. • Keep cut-flower bouquets and floral arrangements in cool locations, out of direct sunlight, so they will last longer. • Flowering potted plants, however, usually perform longer if placed in or near a window with some direct sun. They need that valuable light for photosynthesis; without an energy source, new buds will produce flowers that are smaller and less intensely colored. • Study the winter landscape in the Arboretum gardens, your neighbors’ yards and community parks. Take photos of favorite natural scenes and do a little research to identify plants and grasses that create interest in winter gardens. Use this knowledge to create a garden and landscape for year-round interest. The Science of Gardening: Seeds (150-01-31-15) Saturday, January 31, 2015, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Learn from an expert! Understand the biology of seeds, germination techniques, scarification, stratification and more. Discover fascinating science-based lessons in propagation to de-mystify how to use seeds to grow your plants. Take home several seed-based promises for spring growth. To register: www.arboretum.umn.edu/gardeningclasses.aspx. When planning your garden, check out Andersen Horticultural Library (Snyder Building). The library’s extensive seed catalog inventory, exquisite Nakashima furniture and beautiful study space provide a perfect winter spot to envision and plan your dream garden. See more on page 10.

Of Passenger Pigeons and Mourning Doves – A Cautionary Tale Matt Schuth Naturalist

The mourning dove is one of the most numerous bird species in America today (287 million individuals). The beauty of the dove with its soft, soulful coo-cooing is a joy to see and hear. It is difficult to believe that the mourning dove could become extinct, but it can happen, for just 100 years ago, the last of the passenger pigeons died in the Cincinnati Zoo. “Martha” was the name of the last survivor of a species that numbered between three and five billion individuals at one point in time. In 1806 Alexander Wilson, the father of American ornithology, witnessed a passenger pigeon flock in Kentucky that he conservatively estimated to number just over 2 billion. It was a mile wide and 240 miles long. The mass slaughtering of this species took place over forty years, from 1840-1880. Pigeons young and old were clubbed, netted and shot by the millions. The young pigeons called squabs were especially desirable as they were fattened by 'pigeon milk' which was a regurgitated mix rich in protein fats and salt. They were little butter balls.

Gardens of Roberto Burle Marx Photo by Malcolm Raggett

Pigeon hunters would take a captured pigeon and sew its eyes shut and tie it to a stump or perch to attract pigeons flying overhead. The term 'stool pigeon' derived from this cruel method. In nesting areas, the calls of the pigeons were like rolling thunder. Large branches were constantly crashing to the ground from the sheer numbers of birds. Pigeon dung lay two to three feet thick on the ground. Male pigeons would gather sticks and pass them to the females one at a time for nest construction. Pigeons laid one egg synchronously all on the same day. Uncontrolled slaughter and massive habitat destruction led to the demise of the passenger pigeon. Hopefully, future generations will learn from this sad story.

WINTER PROGRAMS & EVENTS...

Arboretum Campaign: Much Left To Do The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum stands out as a world-class phenomenon. Breath-taking gardens in bloom, majestic tree collections, waterfalls and ponds, natural habitat, even an iconic Red Barn. Named “One of the Top 10 Places to Smell the Flowers” by USA Today, the Arboretum is a unique connection to nature and the outdoors. In our fast-paced world, the Arboretum often stands alone as a place to experience the wonders of nature… where lessons of nature serve as lessons in life. With a rich horticultural heritage, the Arboretum is a place of discovery, learning and renewal, a part of family life for generations of Minnesotans. The stakes are high for the Arboretum to grow and meet the needs of a changing world. The Arboretum Campaign’s promise is to preserve an environment of discovery and renewal; and to ensure enriching, inspiring and life-changing moments in nature and the outdoors. For example, the half-mile Wurtele Bog Boardwalk (pictured) around Green Heron Pond provides a refreshing escape into nature, creating a “living classroom” for learning about our rare glacial-remnant bog, and its diverse ecosystem that can be enjoyed year-round – from spring’s yellow marsh marigolds and lady’s slipper orchids to the golden tamaracks of fall and the pristine beauty of winter. This natural teaching habitat further resonated with Angus and Margaret Wurtele, beyond their lead gift in 2010 to complete their construction. Now, they have provided funding for a major restoration of the bog itself – and significant endowment to ensure the perpetual care of the bog and the boardwalk. There is much left to do. The opportunity to enrich lives, inspire learning and make a difference is a challenge worth achieving. Among the projects in progress are: • Slade Perennial Garden Renovation • Farm Garden and Red Barn • Bee & Pollinator Discovery Center • Upgraded Maintenance Building • Nature-Based Therapeutics/ • Lake Tamarack Woodlands Animal-Assisted Interactions Area Recreation and Research Gardens • Woodlands Performance Stage YOU make a difference! To support the Arboretum Campaign with your gift, visit Oswald Visitor Center; go online at www.arbcampaign.org; call the development office at 612-301-1263; or mail a gift to: Arboretum Campaign, 3675 Arboretum Dr., Chaska, MN 55318.
