Limit 40, Learning Center Hike into the sugarbush to tap a maple tree and taste its sap. Visit the sugarhouse where sap is cooked into syrup. Learn about maple sugaring traditions of native people. Greet spring and sample the sweet flavor of photosynthesis. Suggested for grades 1-6.

EARTH WEEK FESTIVAL: THE 10 PLANTS THAT CHANGED MINNESOTA (965-04-25-13) April 25, 10-1 pm $8 member/$10 non-member, includes adult admission for home school education. Limit 100 This Earth Week we invite you to consider the impact plants have had on Minnesota. From food plants to invasive species, plants have shaped the economy, culture, environment, and agriculture of this state. The festival will take place in the buildings and grounds of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and will feature plants from the “Top 10 Plants That Changed Minnesota” http://www.arboretum.umn. edu/10PlantsMinnesota.aspx. See, taste, and touch living examples of these plants, and meet scientists and community experts who will share the impacts these plants have had on the state. Suggested for grades 4-8.

People, plants, insects, birds--everything alive has a habitat. With the help of the talking tree, discover how we can plant habitats for butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. Take the silent bird hike to explore the habitat in the back yard of the Learning Center. See aphids up close, and release ladybugs in the greenhouse. Take home butterfly, and caterpillar food plants. Suggested for grades 1-2.

Limit 40, Learning Center A Japanese Garden reflects Japanese culture and values. Discover the traditions and visit Seisui-Tei, the Garden of Pure Water. Bake orchid flavored cookies and discover the secrets of one of the largest families of flowering plants in the world. Examine orchids up close with microscopes. Create a detailed botanical illustration of your favorite flower to take home. MAPLE SYRUP MADNESS

Saturdays and Sundays in March, noon-4 p.m. Free with Arboretum admission, Learning Center Celebrate the arrival of spring with the sweet sap of sugar maples. Can you tell the difference between real and artificial maple syrup? Take a maple taste test challenge. Learn how to recognize a maple tree from a twig, even before the tree leafs out. Make a maple keepsake to take home. Grab a map and follow the path from sap to syrup on self guided hike. SPRING INTO THE GARDEN

Saturdays and Sundays in April, drop in noon-4 p.m. Free with Arboretum admission, Learning Center Get ready, get set, get your garden going. Design a plan for a vegetable garden, create plant labels, and start seeds to get a jump on the growing season. Use microscopes to get a close look at seeds sprouting and explore the process of plant germination. Take your plan, labels, and planted seeds home, and watch your new veggie garden grow!

GREEN FUN FOR THE YOUNG PEA PODS FOR PRESCHOOLERS

Healthy kids have a healthy relationship with the natural world. Our very young children develop a love of nature when they explore and create experiences with a caring adult. Pea Pods for Preschoolers provides the opportunity for you and your special little one to be enchanted by the plant world. Weekly themes delight the young learner through planting, art, sensory and science discovery, action, music and story time, snack, outdoor/ greenhouse adventures and the garden. Continue to use your imaginations in our Pea Pods garden and the Green Play Yard - The Arboretum’s place that invites young children to play in a “nearby nature” setting. Come play and learn about nature!

OUT TO PLAY

Free play in nature helps produce healthier children physically, mentally, and emotionally. Outside time allows a place for doing, thinking, feeling, and just being! The Arboretum’s Green Play Yard - natural play environment for early childhood and the Learning Center gardens and grounds are certain to inspire discovery and creative play. We will focus on a different aspect of outdoor play each week, with activities set up, ideas to get you started on your own, and time for you and your little one to discover the wonders of the natural world. Head home refreshed with a tool bag of ideas for nature play. Spend just June with us OR come back in July for a whole new set of adventures! Come out and play! CHILDREN’S GARDEN AT THE MARION ANDRUS LEARNING CENTER

The Children’s Garden is THE place for hands-on discovery, creativity, growing adventures, and nature fun. It’s a place where kids get to taste their accomplishments and use their imagination. Two gardeners will tend a kid-size plot of vegetables and flowers throughout the summer. Our harvest will be used during the class and the extra bounty will be brought home. All gardeners and their families are invited to the evening garden celebration on Wednesday, August 14 from 6-8pm. Price includes snack, project supplies, Children’s Garden t-shirt, and a cookbook with the recipes we made during class. Hike through the woods and around water to find little miracles, discovered by looking through a camera lens. Learn how to use your digital camera better in the field and then how to edit photos to take them to the next level. Select your best photos for a slide show on the last day. Requirements: a digital camera with SD card, a laptop with (free) Picasa photo software installed and an open mind. Taught by Willis Bowman, an engineer, artist and co-designer/builder of the Arboretum’s “Under the Oak” nature play area.

Learn various carving techniques to show textures, backgrounds, and focal points. JUNE 21: SCULPTING NATURE | 993-06-21-13 Build magical sculptures from found natural materials. Use woodworking tools like hand saws and cordless drills; learn quick, clever ways of joining your materials. Taught by Willis Bowman, an engineer, artist and co-designer/builder of the Arboretum’s “Under the Oak” nature play area. JUNE 28: WAX! | 993-06-28-13 Harvest materials from the garden and woods to make molds and cast wax candles or sculptures in the shape of fruits, veggies, leaves and sticks!
