Editor’s note

I’m a pack rat. I save receipts, ATM slips, thank-you notes and every Christmas card I receive each year. The way I see it, the person who sent me a card thought enough about my family to buy a stamp, write my address on an envelope and put it in the mail. It seems like a simple task, but I don’t take it for granted because I know how busy everyone is. Unfortunately, my stacks of season’s greetings have gotten out of hand in recent years, and I feel like I have two options: continue to keep the cards or throw them away. Thankfully, this issue of Smart holds a third, more useful option. On pages 16 and 17, you’ll find an easy way to recycle your holiday cards by turning them into coupon holders. It gives the cards shelf life and helps you stay organized. This fun craft activity could also help stave off cabin fever, just one of the many ways we hope you’ll use Smart to make these long winter months a little easier and more comfortable.

ON THE COVER

Pages 8 and 9 hold tips for picking out the perfect comforter, something you’ll need during chilly nights. For some warmth and nourishment, try the soups on pages 19 through 22. And if you already feel like giving up on your New Year’s resolutions to get healthy or lose weight, turn to page 54 for some inspiration from a York County woman who kicked her smoking habit and took up running.

When it comes to snuggling, Susan Ricchiuto is an expert. The Manchester Township mother of four owned a sewing company in York from about 1997 to 2005. Today, when she’s not working as a substitute teacher, Ricchiuto sews for pleasure. Her latest project is a blue patchwork, batting-filled blanket held together with knots, to comfort a family friend in the hospital.

Filling • The “loft” of the filling will determine the physical size of the comforter as well as the insulating ability. Stitching patterns or quilting helps secure the filling inside the comforter and helps it stay evenly distributed. • The higher the filling the more insulation the comforter will have. • The most expensive down blankets and comforters are made of pure, white, hypoallergenic goose down.

Cover or not to cover your comforter? • A comforter without a cover is called a duvet. A duvet cover will help keep the filling from leaking out. • A duvet cover will make machine washing easier. Instead of a big bulky comforter to clean, simply remove the cover instead. Source: www.pacificcoast.com PHOTOS BY BIL BOWDEN for Smart

More buying tips: • Make sure edges are not frayed. •Inspect quilting, or knotting, so that batting, or filler, is secure. •Fabric should be soft to the touch, and give a little when tugged. •Read labels. Blankets, especially for children, should be washer and dryer safe. To learn more about snuggle quilts and other cozy items for babies, toddlers and new moms, visit online boutique www.babyseeshell.com.

Making the quilt is a labor of love. “When I tie the knots, I say a prayer of healing,” she said. “It’s for comfort . . . warmth.” Sharon Abendschoen is CEO of See Shell Baby Products. She hired Ricchiuto to make Snuggle Quilts for the online boutique. “The ‘snuggle quilt’ was my idea, and I told Susan the size, shape and materials to use,” Abendschoen said in an e-mail. “I wanted a person who was quality oriented and creative.”

Tame your taxes

Year-round organization goes a long way toward making tax time a breeze.

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG for Smart

If dealing with your taxes leaves you frazzled every year, consider taking some time to collect and organize your papers to make 2010 filing a breeze. One way to keep all of your paperwork organized is to create three files: one for your income, one for deductions you can make and one for documents supporting tax credits you plan to claim. Use envelopes in each file — or regular file folders inside of three hanging ones — to store receipts for each category. The Internal Revenue Service advises that you keep track of your receipts and other records throughout the year. “Good record-keeping will help you remember the various transactions you made during the year, which in turn may make filing your return a less taxing experience, according to the Internal Revenue Service’s Web site. In most cases, the IRS does not require you to keep records in any special manner. But it’s good to keep any and all

documents that might have an impact on your federal tax return, including: •Bills •Credit card and other receipts •Invoices •Mileage logs •Canceled, imaged or substitute checks or any other proof of payment •Any other records to support deductions or credits you claim on your return, including charitable donations But you don’t need: •Receipts for smaller, everyday purchases and groceries •ATM receipts, deposit slips and canceled checks (once they show up on your bank statement) •Bills (after you’ve paid them and the transaction shows up on your monthly credit card or bank statement) •Monthly or quarterly student-loan, investment, 401K, daycare or flexiblespending account statements (once the year-end account summary shows up)

According to the IRS, an eligible taxpayer must buy, or enter into a binding contract to buy, a principal residence on or before April 30 and close on the home by June 30.

By SEAN ADKINS for Smart

Home buyer

tax credit extended, expanded

In November, President Barack Obama inked legislation that extended the tax credit of up to $8,000 for qualified firsttime home buyers if they opt to buy a new principle residence. He also authorized a tax credit of up to $6,500 for qualified repeat home buyers. The Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009 stipulates that current owners must have lived in their home for five consecutive years out of the past eight years to be eligible for the credit. Also, the income limits are set at $125,000 for singles and $225,000 for married couples. The National Association of Home Builders provides prospective home buyers with information on the legislation online at www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com.

Here are a few facts to keep in mind: •Home purchases in 2010 may be claimed on an amended 2009 income tax return. •Married couples are not eligible to claim the first-time home buyer tax credit if either spouse has previously owned a home. They may, however, qualify for the repeat home buyer tax credit. •Neither the first-time home buyer tax credit nor the repeat home buyer tax credit has to be repaid unless the home is sold or ceases to be used as the buyer’s principle residence within three years after the initial purchase. •Homes priced above $800,000 are not eligible for either the first-time home buyer tax credit or the repeat home buyer tax credit.

Germs love to hang around Keeping a germ-free home By TERESA McMINN for Smart

Germs love winter. The season causes people to spend more time indoors and can create a breeding ground for the common cold and other bugs. But there are several ways to combat menacing microorganisms and keep a home fresh, a local cleaning expert said. Pat Wherley, an office assistant at Merry Maids in West Manchester Township, gives the following tips for a germ-free home: •Disinfect doorknobs, light switch plates and telephones. “That’s a major germ collecting area,” Wherley said. •Dip a cotton ball in bleach and set it — for a few minutes — in corners where mildew grows. •Vacuum a mattress at least once a month to remove allergens. • Use rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth to remove spots on a mirror. •Mix half a cup of crushed dried lavender flowers and one cup of baking soda, sprinkle over carpet and vacuum. This will create a fresh scent. ILLUSTRATIONS BY SAMANTHA DELLINGER for Smart

Chic h me office accents By KIM COOK Associated Press

By choice or necessity, more workers are doing at least some of their job from home these days. Upgrading the home office can be an affordable project, with immediate payoff and long-term appeal. Joe Noonan, office goods expert for CSN Stores, called it “the new bathroom renovation.” Retailers and designers offer some intriguing pieces that reflect broader decor trends. “My goal when decorating a home office is to develop a space that inspires — that’s as stylish and approachable as every other room in the home,” says Jeanine Hays, a San Francisco-based interior designer and blogger.

Christmas card craft Recycle your holiday cards

Before you pitch all those holiday cards in the trash, create this easy-to-make coupon holder with a few of them.

What you need:

❏❏Assortment of holiday cards ❏❏X-acto knife ❏❏Straight edge ❏❏String ❏❏Cardboard ❏❏Scissors ❏❏Duct tape ❏❏Clear tape

Step 1:

Cut folded cards to these dimensions: 33/4 inches for height by 5 inches for width. Cut a tab at top, so you can label your sections. (Use card template on opposite page.) Soups

Whether you serve it with crackers, salad or a sandwich, a bowl of rich, hot soup warms you from the inside out.

By BETH BENCE REINKE for Smart

People at Liberty Christian Fellowship in Seven Valleys rave about the delicious soups Ann Geiman brings to their monthly church luncheons. “I try to make something different each time for the potluck,” said Geiman, an East Hopewell Township resident. “Most of the time, my pot is empty when I take it home.”

Geiman usually creates her soups the old-fashioned way — in a large pot on the stovetop. Instead of overloading on salt, she seasons her soups with a variety of herbs and zesty spices, trying various combinations. Geiman said one secret to good soup is allowing time for different tastes to blend. “I find that letting the soup sit for a day in the refrigerator brings out the flavor.” Deb Wilderson of York Township likes the convenience of her crock pot for cooking homemade soup. “You can kind of throw everything in there and forget about it,” she said. Wilderson recently whipped up her “loaded creamy potato soup” for 35 women at a ladies luncheon. Dig out your stew pot or slow cooker and try one of these recipes for a hearty, satisfying supper.

Geiman adds her own spices to the Betty Crocker recipe.

SMART TIP:

Legume-based soups such as split pea or ham and bean can get too thick as they cook. For a smooth, lighter consistency, transfer a few cups of soup to a food processor and puree until chunks are blended in, then return to the pot and stir well.

Caramelized Onion and Sweet Potato Soup 2 tablespoons butter 5 large sweet onions, thinly sliced 11/2 tablespoons sugar 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 quarts chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring constantly, for five to seven minutes or until browned. Add sugar, then cook and stir for three more minutes. Add sweet potatoes, broth and spices and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender. Makes 14 1-cup servings. — Ann Geiman, East Hopewell Township, adapted from “Betty Crocker’s Diabetes Cookbook” Floral melamine bowl, $1.79; dinner plate, $1.99; available at Target

Beef Barley Oven Stew 1 pound extra-lean ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cups beef broth 2/3 cup uncooked barley 2 teaspoons fresh oregano, chopped (or 1/2 teaspoon dried) 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 can (14.5 ounces) chopped tomatoes, undrained 1 can (8 ounces) water chestnuts, undrained 1 package (10 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 10-inch nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Cook beef and onion in skillet over medium heat seven to eight minutes, stirring occasionally until beef is brown. Drain. In an ungreased 3-quart casserole dish, stir together beef and onions, beef broth, barley, spices, tomatoes and water chestnuts. Cover and bake 30 minutes. Stir in frozen vegetables, cover and bake 30 to 40 minutes longer or until barley is tender. Our little angels sometimes show their horns By BETH VRABEL for Smart

We’ve all been there. While stopping at the store at 10 p.m. for milk to save tomorrow’s breakfast, a frazzled parent drags a worn-out child. The toddler throws himself on the sticky floor. He demands fistfuls of candy. He screeches, kicks and flings. The parent pulls him up and yells, “Act your age!” “I think, he is,” said Kirsten Freitag Murray, Family Life Education supervisor with COBYS Family Services in Leola. But what if you’re the parent with a child who knows nothing of gratitude? Or maybe your child’s favorite form of communication is screaming, hitting and maybe even a bite or two? Perhaps it hasn’t gotten that far, but lately you seem to yell more than talk to your children. Getting your middleschooler to take out the trash is an epic battle. Or your teen locks herself in her room and you have no idea why. Murray has good news: You can change. And when you do, so will your child. Even better: “It’s never too late to start.” Step 1: Stop thinking of parenting as a job. Murray bristles a bit when folks refer to parenting as the hardest job they’ve ever had. “It’s really the most dynamic and important relationship you’ll ever have, but it’s not a job,” she said. “A lot of what we’re able to do in our parenting depends on the quality of our relationship with our kids. To teach them, we need to understand how to influence them rather than control them.”

Step 2: Get everyone on board. Take a good long look at your family. Now, how do you want your family to look? Think about the traits you value. “Once you know them, you need to articulate them to your spouse,” Murray said. “You need to know if you’re on the same page. And you need to transfer them to the kids.”

Murray suggests this question: Do I consider all of my talents and my relation- “You can’t blow your fuse and then pretend it didn’t happen, and then make ships and my material things as a gift or it up by, ‘Hey, let’s go out for ice cream.’ do I think I’m entitled? On the shelves Here are some books Kirsten Freitag Murray, Family Life Education supervisor with COBYS Family Services in Leola, recommends to parents: • “Active Parenting” by Dr. Michael H. Popkin. This series of books asks parents to take an active role. Family meetings are a central theme. • “Positive Discipline” by Jane Nelson. This book breaks down discipline plans based on age. • “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids will Talk” and “Siblings without Rivalry” by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. The communication tips work for parents in all stages, including empty-nest families.

to take that opportunity to be a servant leader.” Just remember these pointers: Explain, but don’t excuse. Say you were wrong. Talk about how you could do it better. Holding yourself accountable doesn’t weaken your position as the leader, Kile said. “I think it shows strength that you’ve done wrong or to admit that you’ve done and make it better.” Step 6: Don’t lose sight of your values, even when you’re stressed. Picture a tube of toothpaste, all of its contents squeezed out onto a plate. Then imagine the toothpaste represents unkind words parents use to lash out at their family. “Tell me, how can I put that toothpaste back in the tube?” Murray said. “I can never undo that damage.” Needing to vent isn’t a good enough reason to lash out. Apologizing might soothe the injury, but it won’t cure it. Right now, Murray is battling cancer. It means taking the train for treatments. It means worry, pain, fatigue and heartache. “Every single day, I have to make choices. Am I going to do the right thing — am I going to do the mature thing — or am I going to do the easy thing? If we take the easy route, we tend to do damage,” Murray said.

Time for change: • Kirsten Freitag Murray, Family Life Education supervisor with COBYS Family Services in Leola, offers the following red flags: • If you are feeling extremely frustrated on a regular basis with one child or with several of your children or with a particular area. • If you’ve been trying to teach your child to use the toilet for two years and he’s only 3, that’s a sign you need to do some reading about child development stages. • If you’ve got a teenager who’s using a social networking site for 13 hours a day and you think it’s OK because she’s in her room and not getting into trouble. Don’t think that because they’re in your four walls they’re safe. • Don’t put it on the kids to work it out. Help them. “When we say to kids ‘work it out,’ we’re putting them in a horrible position.”

How to... Raise a bilingual child Languages help children embrace other cultures By JENNIFER VOGELSONG for Smart

When Rosalinda DeJesus got pregnant for the first time, she knew she wanted her daughter to grow up speaking both English and Spanish. DeJesus’ parents came from Puerto Rico and raised her to be bilingual. She saw firsthand how useful it was to know two languages. Now a mother of three girls — Shannon, 6, Olivia, 5, and Delaney, 3 — much of what the Manchester Township woman has learned came from her own

research, ideas from others and through trial and error. DeJesus has collected a number of strategies that can be used to teach young children a second language, whether or not you’re a native speaker.

Here are some of her suggestions: If you’re a native speaker, speak only Spanish when communicating with your child. Don’t worry about the child getting confused. “Everything I had heard was the

sooner you get them to learn, the better,” she said. If you are not a native speaker, you can learn the language alongside your child, making it a fun project you do together. You will just have to seek out more ways for you both to hear native accents. Luckily, as society has become more culturally diverse, it is easier to find ways to hear them.

John had been a manager of a Catholic parish, but with the earning potential Mieke had, he considered staying home with their kids instead. “We knew that it might be where we were headed when we invested in the earning power of law school,” John said. “I’m well-built for staying at home, and it’s been a real blessing.” The couple always knew they wanted to have their children close together, and that one of them wanted to stay home while the kids were small. “We both believe that no one can raise kids as well as their own parents can,” Mieke said. In many ways, it’s worked out perfectly for them. John is more organized and concerned with keeping house in general. He also loves home projects and yard work. When Mieke returns home from work, he’ll cook dinner while she spends time with their kids. There are also many challenges that come with such a situation. “Sometimes, once I come home in the evening or for the weekends, John will disappear on some project, which is great because he’s enthusiastic and it needs to be done, but then it becomes hard to balance our time together,” Mieke said. John worries that spending his days without much adult interaction has atrophied his brain in certain ways. Mieke admits a similar fear, more for John’s lack of social involvement with other adults with children. “He’s not really involved in any ‘moms’ ’ groups, or play dates of any sort, which would probably be a good idea,” Mieke said.

Because the traditional roles have been switched, a big question for the couple is who is responsible for certain chores. If there’s a load of laundry to fold, it’s hard to label who should do it. But they work it out, and they feel fulfilled in the roles they’ve chosen. “It’s been a trade-off, not having two incomes, but it’s been worth it,” Mieke said.

New mammogram guidelines confusing A federal group says women should wait to get screened By NICHOLE DOBO for Smart

Nine years ago, Lori Clark was working on a breast cancer quality management project at York Hospital. She was 39 years old, just a year shy of the typical age for a first mammogram, but her work on the project prompted her to go for one. They found a lump. It turned out to be cancer. Further testing showed it had spread to her lymph nodes. Treatment was long, intense and, ultimately, successful. Clark said she believes that early detection saved her life. The cancer was deep in the tissue, so there was no way she could have felt it herself, she said. When Clark heard about a federal government task force’s recommendations, released in November, to move back mammogram screenings to age 50 unless there is a family history of the cancer, she was shocked. “I would probably not be alive today if

I had followed those guidelines,” said the North Codorus Township mother of two. A federal government task force released recommendations that were met with anger and confusion from some women, their physicians and groups such as the American Cancer Society. The government responded with the Secretary of Health and Human Services saying the task force recommendations were not federal policy. In its report, the task force concluded that getting screened for breast cancer so early and so often leads to too many false alarms and unneeded biopsies without substantially improving women’s odds of survival. Dr. Beth (Baughman) DuPree, a breast cancer specialist and York County native who now practices medicine in Bucks County, said the report confused many of her patients. She believes the proposed changes will mean many more women will die from breast cancer. “I think they are looking at this as a

Clark, who did not have a family history of breast cancer, said many women she knows are upset with the proposed changes. It’s been especially upsetting because the recommendations were partly based on a cost analysis, she said. “That just really struck me cold when I read that,” she said. “It is certainly worth it when you are the person or if you know the person.” — The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Several doctors groups and advocacy groups set guidelines for cancer screening, and they update that advice periodically as new information emerges. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-appointed, independent panel of doctors and scientists, also makes recommendations looked to by doctors groups, insurers and policy makers. The latest advice from the major medical groups for routine screening — primarily for people who don’t have a family history of a particular cancer or other risk factors:

• American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists: Mammograms every 1-2 years for women in their 40s; annual mammograms age 50 and older; breast exam by a doctor annually from age 19; breast selfexam can be recommended.

BREAST CANCER

• Cancer Society: Start Pap tests about three years after first intercourse but no later than 21; annually or every 2 to 3 years for women older than 30 who have three normal tests; stop at 70 after at least three negative tests and no abnormal tests in last 10 years; discontinue after a total hysterectomy.

• American Cancer Society: Mammograms yearly beginning at age 40; breast exam by doctor at least every three years in 20s and 30s, annually after 40; breast self-exam an option.

• U.S. Preventive Services Task Force: Mammograms every two years for women ages 50 to 74, after 75 the risks and benefits unknown; recommends against self-exam; value of exams by doctors unknown. CERVICAL CANCER

COLON CANCER • Cancer Society and other major groups: Start screening at 50 with one of these tests: colonoscopy every 10 years; a sigmoidoscopy of the lower colon every five years; CT colonography or “virtual colonoscopy” every five years; barium enema every five years, stool blood test annually; stool DNA test, no interval given.

• Task force: Screen from age 50 to 75 with one of three tests: colonoscopy every 10 years; a sigmoidoscopy every five years, combined with a stool blood test every three years; a stool blood test every year. — The Associated Press

OTHER GUIDELINES: New guidelines by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say most women in their 20s can have a Pap smear every two years instead of annually to catch slow-growing cervical cancer. The change comes amid a separate debate over when regular mammograms to detect breast cancer should begin, in a woman’s 40s or 50s. The timing of the Pap guidelines is coincidence, said ACOG, which began reviewing its recommendations in late 2007 and published the update in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology in November. — The Associated Press

Seduction begins with communication Take the time to learn what your partner really wants

42 | smart

By NICKI STIGER for Smart

On countless newsstands, you can find 10 ways to be better in bed, 20 ways to seduce your man and 50 ways to spark your sex life. Despite sexual images filling television, movies and music videos, Jack Osman, retired professor of health science at Towson University, said many Americans reject sex, shushing people who talk about it and punishing children for natural sexual behaviors. But, Osman said, studies show that a healthy sex life at home leads to a healthier and happier human being. Healthy sex, Osman said, blooms from honest communication between partners. “You can’t read your partner’s mind,” Osman said. “If you don’t ask, you won’t get.” Osman offered these two strategies to try with your partner to rediscover what pleases you both.

10 things: All you need is a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Label the paper from one to 10. On that list, each partner should write 10 things he or she loves to do sexually. Be honest, be explicit and be detailed. When the list is complete, see where you stand. After this list is done, see how well you know your partner. Try to fill out his top 10 things. After the exercise is over, compare notes. Osman said this is a great activity to do on a special anniversary or occasion because sexual preferences don’t stay the same throughout life. “Not only do people tend to have different things on their lists,” Osman said, “but erogenous zones shift.”

Sexological exam: This strategy is used to help couples discern between what is acceptable and what is not. “It sets up parameters,” Osman said. It also helps them discover pleasurable experiences. The idea is to play a game of adult doctor, taking turns touching various parts of the body in different ways. The partners should rate each action on the following scale: -3: Painful, stop immediately -2: Not good at all -1: Uncomfortable

0: Neutral 1: Good 2: Very nice 3: Awesome

Suggestions for spicing up your relationship In a world full of neverending responsibilities, bonding with your mate can slip down to the bottom of your “to-do” list (which can be lethal to romance). Check out these fresh ways to get a little closer. 1. Use food as foreplay. Purchase a gourmet cookbook (or log onto www.letseatpa. com) and then grab your mate and head to the store to purchase all of the ingredients. Break open a bottle of wine, light a few candles and turn on your favorite tunes while working together on a decadent meal. 2. Give him a challenge. Challenge him to a game of pool, Monopoly or another favorite physical activity such

as soccer or basketball. He’ll love your playfulness, and you’ll get a kick out of watching him show off. Make a bet that’s win-win, such as the loser has to plan a date for the following night or act out a devilish little fantasy later that evening. 3. Go retro. Whether it’s a day at the amusement park, or ordering a movie on-demand and loading up on your favorite candy in your pajamas, grab your partner and do something you both loved as kids. 4. Enjoy a lazy weekend together. Turn off your phones, stay in your pajamas, order in and lie on the couch until the sun goes down. There is something to be said about doing nothing at all. — MCT

Meet Central PA’s ‘beautiful baby’ The October contest raised thousands for March of Dimes. By KARA EBERLE for Smart

When Jennifer Gibboney heard about the Central Pennsylvania Beautiful Baby Contest, she knew she had to enter her little girl. “Because we think you’re the cutest baby,” Gibboney said before giving her daughter, 7-month-old Ryleigh, a smooch on the cheek. As it turned out, the voters agreed with her. Ryleigh received the most votes and became Central Pennsylvania’s most beautiful baby. She won a $500 gift card to Capital City Mall in Cumberland County and a junior bedroom suite from Wolf Furniture. More than 250 babies were entered into the contest, which raised more than $17,000 for the March of Dimes.

About the March of Dimes Each year, 543,000 babies are born prematurely, which is one in every eight babies. The March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.

ONE SMART WOMAN

Running strong Former smoker reduces stress with exercise.

By TARA HAWKINS for Smart

What made you decide to quit smoking? I had been smoking for 20 years. In August 2007, my doctor told me that I had high cholesterol. I decided that I did not want to take medicine. Instead, I made a lifestyle change. That meant stopping smoking, eating a lot more fruits and vegetables and exercising. How did quitting change your life? Well, my cholesterol has dropped 80 points. About a year after quitting smoking, I started running. Why running? Before, I wasn’t a very active person. I would work out occasionally but didn’t really stick to anything. My job can be pretty stressful. Running really reduced those stress levels. The races keep me motivated. I am always looking for another race. How often do you run? I run about three times a week. When I am training for a race, I add another day. It is harder to get it in with it getting dark so early this time of year. I would much rather run outside than on a treadmill.

Has your commitment to running inspired any of your friends to start running, too? Yes. At work, a group of five girls decided to run with me in the Army 10-Miler in Washington, D.C. We all trained together in July. We would even get together and run on the weekends. My husband has been very supportive, too. When I was training, he would come along and ride his bike behind me. What do you do when you are not running? Well, I just finished up my associate’s degree online through the University of Phoenix. My husband, Scott, really pushed for me to finally get my degree. He hadn’t ever finished his, either. We went back together and both got degrees in information technology. If not for him, I probably wouldn’t have done it. I also just started doing some trail riding on a mountain bike. It sounds like a triathlon might be in your future. (Laughs) I haven’t made my mind up about that. Anything is possible.
