Matt’s Media Tips 11-19 ‘Tis The Season to Share and be Thankful As I think about and reflect about things that I am thankful for within Discovery Education, I have to say that the ability to share and support others with the My Content, My School, My District, Quicklists, and MediaShare tools have to be at the top of that list. What’s all that content stuff about? For those of you who harken’ back to the days of unitedstreaming, you may remember this thing called “playlists.” That feature has changed quite a bit over the years and the new added functionality is guaranteed to make you logging in for a second helping of the good stuff (sorry for the pun - I have Thanksgiving dinner on the mind). Over the next couple of pages I’m going to outline a few things that you might not have known about these relatively new features and functionalities. Now I covered a lot of the My Content how-to’s back on April 2, 2012. So I’m not going to repeat those steps (you can click on that date’s link to get an extensive walk-through). But I do want to point out that the location of the My Content button looks a smidgen different today see picture above. To add something to your content find and click on the little blue down arrow (next to the blue + symbol) next to your chosen asset. Then select the My Content link. The QuickList We’re going to skip along now to the brand new QuickList feature and functionality. This is pretty cool.

How am I doing? I would love to know your thoughts. Use this link to tell me!

Pick an asset, any asset, and you’ll find the QuickList count and play button located in the lower lefthand corner of your screen. The QuickList gives you the ability to find anything and everything and quickly book mark it for viewing later. You can also assign your bookmarks to an individual student, entire class, or even incorporate this list into a Writing Prompt, Assignment, or Quiz! See I told you this feature is pretty cool.

Adding things to your QuickList is easy. Simply find the blue + symbol that is associated with your full video, segment, song, image, sound effect, etc and click on it. This will automatically add your asset to your QuickList queue.

Click on this blue + symbol to add the full video to your QuickList.

Once you’ve selected content and beefed up your QuickList you can choose to dish it all out or portion it out bit by bit - whatever suits your appetite (I guess I’m still thinking of that turkey). After you click on the play symbol you will see all of the things that you’ve bookmarked. Then it is just a simple matter of clicking on the forward or backwards arrows to shuffle through your stuff. To share your bookmarked content to a student, class, or assignment scroll over to the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and click on the List Options up arrow. This will pull up your QuickList menu. When you’re done viewing this menu simply click on the List Options down arrow.

Click on this blue + symbol to add any of these segments to your QuickList.

Ok Matt, I’m with you on the QuickList - but what’s the difference between that feature and the My Content feature? Well, my friend, I am so glad that you have asked. Think of the My Content area as your way of organizing your bookmarks. Remember that you can create folders of content within the My Content area. This includes anything that you’ve created like quizzes, prompts, and assignments. You can also share your content with your school and district. I’ve seen districts map their curriculum to Discovery Education assets in their District Content folders. I’ve also seen Department Heads create and share content using the School Content folder. And if you have MediaShare turned on, you can upload your own work (lesson plans, presentations, rubrics, videos, etc) and either add it to your own My Content or share it across your school or district. To see how to do that check out this edition of Matt’s Tips and Tricks. Here’s a quick tip. All DEN Stars have access to MediaShare. This means that you can add their work to your My Content, School Content and District Content folders! Check out the Narrow My Results column on the left-hand side of your screen. If there are DEN Assets associated with your search you will see a blue By Source section. Check the DEN Assets box to see and/or add their great work! How am I doing? I would love to know your thoughts. Use this link to tell me!
