Mount Dynamics For MMA By: Morne Swanepoel

One of the most emphasized coaching instructions in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) No Holds Barred and Submission wrestling today is - POSITIONING. The Oxford Dictionary explains positioning as follow: Place occupied by person or thing; proper place; way thing is placed, mental attitude, state of affairs, situation, rank or status, strategic point. The above explanation is clear, but what does this mean in the world of MMA and Submission wrestling ? The goal to obtain superior positioning over one's opponent in the stand up position and on the ground ranges from knowing when to executing devastating strikes, submission and choke holds. This has become imperative for any combat athlete. Attaining the mounted position is one of the most sought after positions for most fighters & students in MMA/Submission wrestling. This occurs when one fighter is on top of his opponent, astride his chest with both knees on the floor. There are various reasons why this position is sought after: •

• • •

Fighter with top position has dynamic striking opportunities; in most cases the top fighter has superior reach and mobility, whereas bottom fighter is limited in their mobility and capacity to land strikes. Top position will have maximum momentum behind punches, elbows and head strikes. Bottom fighter has almost no momentum due to being pinned against the floor. More options for choking and submissions from top position while it is next to impossible to apply these from the bottom position. Bottom fighter's breathing can be affected by top fighters weight putting pressure on the chest and abdomen area which result could result in the bottom fighter to becoming more fatigued and possibly start panicking. Thus the mounted position offers a potentially devastating advantage to the person or fighter who attains it. Escaping the Mount If your opponent has mounted you, the onus is on you to escape. Attempting submission holds and strikes from this very disadvantageous position is not recommended. Your focus should be on escaping to a better position, such as the guard position, to your knees, or standing up. Four basic mount escapes It will be in your best interest to expose yourself to at least 4 basic mount escapes. Do not just accumulate techniques without having the ability to successfully apply them under full resistance. A ‘basic’ technique is one that has a high chance of success in all out sparring. We must ensure that we have a sound foundation of basics which we can apply under most conditions. One of my coaches and mentors, Burton Richardson has a great quote I would like to share with you which stresses the fact that more is not always better: ‘ Knowledge is not power, the ability to apply your knowledge under pressure is true power’ Here are the four techniques I consider to be the basics for your mount escape. Please check the Instructional sequence photographs for more comprehensive explanations: 1. Bridge or Up Escape Your opponents limbs are trapped on the one side of his body. One can escape by thrusting the hips up and to the side, making it difficult for your opponent to control his balance.

2. Elbow Escape Here your elbow and hands are used to create space between your hips and your opponents legs, giving you the opportunity to pull a leg or two out providing you the opportunity to transfer into the half or full guard positions.

3. Escaping Through the Back Door Your escape route is created by moving underneath your opponent.

4. Elevation/Hip Escape By placing your hands on your opponents hips and thrusting upwards elevating your opponent, you have the opportunity to pull your knees up and catch your opponents weight on your shins starting your butterfly guard game.

Conditioning yourself to be able to withstand being mounted is just as important as the counter techniques to the mount. I developed a term/concept a couple of years ago which is imperative to the success of every MMA and Submission wrestling student. It is called Performance Games and is based on isolated sparring! The basic idea behind performance games is to isolate certain sections within a MMA or submission wrestling bout and to focus specifically on the offense and defense tactics and techniques within that parameter. For example, let’s say I want to improve on my takedowns and improve on not being taken down from the clinch. Performance Games can be structured to help you improve this specific area of your game, i.e.: Round 1 - The first round you will work on your takedowns. Your partner will work on not being taken down. This can be done from actual clinch range or from Kick Boxing. So for simplicity let’s say you start in the clinch range pummeling. Your goal will be to dominate clinch positioning to set up your takedown and your partner will be working on his sprawl and avoiding those dominating clinch positions to make it difficult for you to take him down. For this round there are no strikes allowed. Round 2 - Swap roles so you have to work on defending the takedown. Round 3 - Both parties go for the takedown. Still no strikes. Round 4 - Same as round one but this time your opponent can add punches. So besides trying to take your partner down you also have to work on defending the punches. Round 5 - Same as round two but now you can throw the punches. Round 6 - Same as round three but both parties can throw punches now. This is just a basic idea of performance games. These games can include as many variables as you want. One can use these games for preparation for MMA no holds barred bouts or Submission wrestling competitions. The goal with these games is to assist the student in improving certain areas of their game. I like using the word ‘game’ as it should be trained in that manner where both athletes have fun doing it and help each other improve.

Mount Dynamics For MMA By: Morne Swanepoel

Here are a couple of Performance Games (Isolated sparring drills) one should add into their preparation to stand a better chance of escaping the mount: Positional Performance Game - Partner mounts you. You get 10 seconds to try and escape the bottom getting into a better position such as the guard, side control, back or mount and all of their variations. After 10 seconds you swap around. The one at the bottom has 10 seconds to try and change the position and the one at the top needs to maintain the mount for the 10 seconds. Many variables can be added to the specific drill such as extending the time limit to let’s say 20 seconds, one minute etc.. One can then also determine the position the fighter at the bottom must try and obtain such as the half guard for example. One can also put the one at the bottom under more pressure by allowing the one at the top to add strikes to the game etc. Standing up Performance Game - This doesn’t have to start off from being mounted but from any of the controlling positions on the ground. Same goes for the first performance game I mentioned above. For the purpose of this article we will stick to being mounted. This performance game works on the same concept as the first one, the only difference is now your goal is to get to your feet. You can use various time limits and play the game with or without striking. Bottom line is you want to get to your feet as quickly as possible. Your partner should obviously try and keep you on the ground and maintain the mounted position if possible. Ride the Bull Performance Game - Again your partner mounts you. Your goal in this game is to keep moving trying to upset the partner on top’s balance and posture. The game can again be controlled with various time limits, i.e. 10 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec etc. Move your body, especially your hips vigorously side to side and create momentum by driving off your feet and bucking the hips. Your hands and arms also come into play by pushing and pulling at your partner. Continue building up momentum making it difficult for the partner on top to control the mount. This will increase your stamina and endurance to be able to work at a high rate without stopping and add plenty of explosiveness to your bottom game. All these performance games are a whole lot of fun and make a huge difference in your game when escaping the mount. It is important to vary the level of intensity (resistance) to ensure that the bottom person doesn’t just get overwhelmed but rather improves by being exposed to progressive resistance training concepts. It focuses on improving your endurance under the stresses of being mounted and ensures you develop functional explosive muscles. Both partners become more skillful in escaping and maintaining the mount by using functional tactics and techniques during these performance games. Developing a high level of work capacity is what allows one to have endurance in strength and speed. If one can only maintain a high level of performance for half of a match or fight, then it won’t be long before someone matches their physical and mental will and takes them beyond what they’re capable of. Most of your workout should focus on increasing work capacity. If your work capacity is poor, then you will fail to execute high speed strong movements. Executing strong high speed movements under pressure will help you win a MMA/submission wrestling bout. In Conclusion - Being mounted is one of the most dominating positions in the MMA and submissions wrestling arenas. When being mounted it is imperative that you prioritize escaping. Besides having a strong foundation of basic escapes from the mount it is important that you implement dynamic training methods and tactics. Preparation in the form of performance games will help you learn how to withstand the pressures of being mounted.

Growing Your Club By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

Like any business, an MMA club will eventuality have to close its doors if it stagnates and stops growing. This means that the owner or instructor has to be flexible and open to change in the market and adapt his business accordingly. This can be a challenge, because unlike other business types, an MMA club has only one product to offer, and that is MMA, right? Wrong! Although you don’t want to diversify too much, it is wise to offer more than just sports MMA at your gym. MMA is still martial arts, and the martial arts have an array of avenues that can benefit athletes, members of the community, and ultimately your gym. I’m not saying commercialize to the extent that some other well-known martial arts have done, but you can make your gym an interesting and fun place to be. It might just be your chance to give back to the community while growing your business at the same time. Self-defense courses are a simple example of something that will draw people to your gym, with no apparent interest in MMA. A well structured and advertised course will attract mostly women and young teenagers, and equip them with the skills that might just end up saving their lives. Besides the fact that you will be earning extra from the courses, these people will get exposed to the inside of an MMA club. This exposure might just spark an interest in doing the sport recreationally, thus more students for you. The added benefit you get from this is free advertising by word of mouth. If the experience is a pleasant and useful one, these people will tell others and so forth and so on. I have been working on introducing into my club the concept of MMA for street survival. This takes the normal concept of MMA and combines it with some powerful military hand-to-hand combat techniques. This would produce a MMA street survival system that might not be suitable for the octagon, but works well and has sparked a huge amount of interest. Once again you have visitors to your gym, free advertising and potential students that just might sign up.

INDUSTRY ADVICE Growing Your Club By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

Another way to promote your club would be to host a competition in your area, invite a few other clubs to advertise on a big scale and keep your fingers crossed. Although I love organizing competitions, it’s a bit more risky than hosting courses at your gym. It is more costly but the reward might be a lot bigger than playing it safe with courses. If this is the route you decide to take, make sure that you have representatives and sign-up contracts ready at the competition! Nothing gets the testosterone fired up like watching a good MMA match. Before you know, the ego takes over and guys are ready to sign away half their paycheck for a membership and a t-shirt! When you have everything in place and all your efforts are bringing in new students, make sure to keep your gym tidy and interesting. I’m not suggesting a total change in decor every six months, but make some healthy changes. Perhaps you should replace that old Bruce Lee poster that has been collecting dust for the last decade with something fresh. Spend some money on your club, and the rewards might just surprise you! Happy training, and remember, Never Back Down! [ Read More ]

JAMES TONEY VS. RANDY COUTURE PREVIEW By: Rich Bergeron

James “Lights Out” Toney (72-6-3, 44 KOs) is likely the most experienced traditional boxer to ever make the switch to mixed martial arts, and yet Dana White’s decision to allow Toney into the Ultimate Fighting Championship is being viewed by countless critics as a setup for a “freak show.” Toney—in a video interview with MMA Fighting Reporter Ariel Helwani circulating widely on the Interweb—claims with pride that the only freak show is, “in my pants.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4Spg2vn-XM&feature=player_embedded Randy “The Natural” Couture (18-10, 7 KOs) will be Toney’s first opponent in the octagon, and the 47year-old pioneer of the sport of MMA is actually 6 years older than his newcomer opponent. The pairing seems more about age than ability, but Toney has reportedly been developing his ground game with some very tough fighters. MMA Standout “King” Mo Lawal even claims Toney tapped him out in a training session. One thing is for sure about Toney’s game plan: he is very confident in his ability and seems to want Couture to know he is in no way intimidated. Toney is a Mayweather-like master of mouthing off about his opponents and creating buzz around his fights by being brash and in-your-face. His latest publicity stunt involved dressing up a Couture action figure in a dress and proudly displaying it for the cameras in the above video. James Toney is no stranger to controversy due to being a repeat “banned substance” offender, and he admits it’s been hard for him to get a fight in boxing these days. Still, his decision to enter into the realm of mixed martial arts seems to have more to do with UFC President Dana White’s past diatribes about the sport of boxing that clearly offended Toney. This fight has become for Toney a turning point in his life and a way to show White that the right boxer can truly thrive in mixed martial arts.

FEATURED BLOG JAMES TONEY VS. RANDY COUTURE PREVIEW By: Rich Bergeron

Couture has a bit of baggage himself. Randy took a hiatus from the UFC and engaged in a bitter contract dispute involving Mark Cuban and the civil court system. Judges in Nevada and Texas juggled the dispute before Couture settled the matter on good terms and returned to the league to finish his career in late 2008. White, not one to forget being called out on the carpet by one of his most recognizable fighters, has thrown some of the best fighters he can find in the division in the cage with “The Natural” since his return to the UFC. Toney’s hoping to follow in the footsteps of Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who beat Couture in his first two return bouts. Back to back wins against Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman put Couture’s career back in overdrive, but Coleman is also a fighter in his mid-40s. So, it appears White is grooming Couture for the senior circuit so the former champ can go out in style. Still, putting him in with Toney is not necessarily a gift. For Toney, it’s all about bragging rights, and it may not be so far fetched to think he has a good shot at getting the debut victory. Despite the multiple disciplines needed to master MMA, Toney is unlike the sport’s fads like Herschel Walker and Kimbo Slice. He’s been entrenched in a sport that is one of the major disciplines involved in MMA. His ring experience is truly legendary, and he’s never been knocked out. He has a picture perfect stinging and repetitive jab and power in both hands. He also claims to have some street-fighting experience as well. This is not going to be the kind of fight that leaves Toney looking like Former World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski did against Former UFC champ Tim Sylvia in May of 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9VML_HUU0w&feature=player_embedded [ Read More ]
