DOWN AND OUT IN PARADISE By Charles Leerhsen This is a book for fans of Anthony Bourdain who may have been looking for closure or, perhaps, just wanting to know more about him, the mystery behind his life, but mostly about his death. Who was this guy? He seemed open, candid, said and did what he wanted; he was a brilliant writer, had a dream job and international fame. So, the question is Why. The book contains interviews, texts, emails, tales about his childhood, his addictions, his desire for perfection. I don’t know if we should be allowed to read these private messages, but it does give us some insight. Doesn’t it? Maybe this book is as close to a glimpse as we’ll ever get into the private life of Anthony Bourdain.

OUR LITTLE WORLD By Karen Winn Growing up in the 80’s with my younger sister, I was immediately intrigued by this book. Oh goody, a nostalgic read about sisters, Bee and Audrina, growing up in an idyllic cul-de-sac circa 1980’s. A cute boy, Max, moves in across the street; there is jealousy and competitiveness and then … there is tragedy. Sally, Max’s little sister goes missing at the lake. The mystery goes unsolved for years and the sisters grow up under rumors and speculation of what happened to Sally – the bucolic life in the suburbs spoiled forever. The story is really about Bee’s and Audrina’s relationship and how they go from friends to adversaries over the course of time, misreading each other’s intentions. In the end, we are given answers, but maybe not the ones we were looking for.

KALEIDOSCOPE By Cecily Wong This is a story of sisterhood, ambition, and the complex tangled-ness of relationships between sisters, lovers, and parents. Morgan and Riley are the closest of sisters. Even if Riley lives in the shadow of her beautiful and talented sister, Morgan. Morgan falls in love with James (Riley’s crush) and Riley is swept up in their relationship, kinda like the third wheel, even though she is treated with love and affection by both. So, life goes on contentedly for everyone, until one day, just as they are to celebrate Riley’s birthday, a devastating tragedy occurs and things get messy. Riley, who has been hiding in her sister’s shadow, is forced to figure out who she is and what she wants. She is also forced to have a relationship with her parents whom she basically held at arm’s length, and her relationship with James begins to change. As the story unfolds, Riley faces and reveals some truths. A book about love, grief, and forgiveness.

THE RULE OF THREE By E. G. Scott The mystery begins as soon as you open this book. Three husbands, three wives, and a murder. And a coma. And a missing person. It all starts innocuously enough – poker night for the hubbies and book club for the wives – and it all takes place within the gated community of Kingsland, a posh suburban paradise. Could it be any more banal? But the secrets of said suburbia are soon revealed. The story is told by the wives and various other characters, the detectives, the neighbors… it was confusing at times keeping track of who’s who. There are twists and turns as the juicy drama of the rich and famous unfolds. This is a fun fireside read.

A Perfect Weekend

AT THE I N N A B OV E TI D E

m

y sister and I haven’t had a kid-free weekend, just the two of us, in about twenty years. With my last bird leaving the nest to pursue his dreams in San Francisco, and my sister’s youngest now at an age where a weekend without mothering promised uninterrupted playtime on her iPad, it seemed as if the stars had finally aligned – we were granted the gift of two days of “Me Time,” or in this case, “We Time.” A sister weekend twentyplus years in the making deserved something special – something spectacular. What to do, what to do? Let’s go to Sausalito – less than two hours away, we would be able to enjoy our precious hours together ASAP.

Sausalito is a picturesque enclave just across the Golden Gate Bridge. With the rolling hills dotted with colorful homes and the stunning views, Sausalito is said to remind one of a seaside town in the Mediterranean. So, for less than a two-hour drive, you can have an Italian-esque vacation without having to go through customs. As for us, we just felt lucky to be Californians because we got it like that. We had an ambitious list of things to do: 1 Take the ferry to San Francisco and go shopping at the Ferry Building Farmers Market 2 Hike at least one of the many trails in the area 3 Hit a local bar or two and/or go wine tasting (we were kid-less after all) 4 Eat at only restaurants with a good view 5 Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge To name a few. We did exactly none of those things. Why? Because we were staying at The Inn Above Tide, a deceptively modest-looking wooden structure that sits at the edge of the water. We already knew, of course, that all of the rooms and suites at the inn would be firstclass with beautiful views of the bay. We do have the internet and the pictures were impressive. So, we entered the tiny lobby where we were warmly greeted by the

friendly staff and within a few short minutes, we were led to our suite. Once we walked through the doors of the Founder’s Suite, the first thing we saw through the expansive wall of glass was an enormous deck which sat directly on top of the water and where an incredible view of the San Francisco skyline was picture perfect. Notably, the suite itself is the epitome of luxury. To say it is spacious at 1,000 square feet, is an understatement. There’s a fullsize kitchen, a powder room, a tastefully decorated dining room, living room, and bedroom with en suite bathroom. And then there’s that deck. The deck is massive with two seating areas and a dining table, and of course, the stunning view of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, Angel Island, and the East Bay. The Founder’s Suite is certainly a splurge at over $1,800 a night, but there aren’t many places anywhere along the coast of California where you will feel like you’re floating on the water. For a special occasion, a romantic weekend, a milestone birthday – any room or suite at the Inn Above Tide would exceed expectations but the Founder’s Suite is the crème de la crème of waterfront luxury. It’s worth the splurge. Besides the amazing views, there are the details: breakfast in the morning and wine in the evening delivered to your room each day of your stay, custom bed linens, complimentary

slippers that you can take home, plush robes, binoculars, Bluetooth enabled sound system, and Bvlgari toiletries. Be prepared to feel spoiled. After relaxing on the deck for a while, we realized that luxuriating in the suite, was what we wanted to do most. Hiking, taking a ferry, walking across a bridge? For peasants! We donned our plush robes and our complimentary slippers and shared a bottle of a good red wine and fine cheeses (complements of the inn) on the deck while reminiscing about our childhood. We had made reservations at a few nice restaurants nearby but decided to DoorDash our meals as soon as we realized that there was no way any restaurant would have a view more breathtaking than the one we already had. This became de rigueur for the remainder of our stay. In the morning we would enjoy flaky croissants, quiche, fresh fruit, coffee, and tea on the deck. After a leisurely breakfast, we would walk from one end of town to the other. My sister, an avid runner, had scoped out the town during her 6AM run, so she had already created a mental map of cafés, restaurants, and shops that we could inspect more closely

later on in the day. We went shopping and bought a candle and some books to enjoy in front of the fireplace to further luxuriate in our fabulous room. I contemplated the purchase of a pair of Jimmy Choo’s from a well-curated consignment store. We enjoyed coffee from a small café that took their coffee seriously. And we walked. We walked through the neighborhoods, past the houseboats, through the busy tourist-busy waterfront. It’s a small town, but there’s a lot to see. At dinner, we would order from one of the many restaurants nearby and dine on the deck with the twinkling lights of the city as our backdrop. We could get used to this. We did get used to this. But kids and husbands, work and reality were waiting for our return. We were already planning to come back soon. Maybe we’d even bring the family, or at least the husbands. Or maybe we’ll come back just the two of us again. Two sisters luxuriating at The Inn Above Tide.᯽

dinner at Terra

W

e had dinner reservations at 5:30 to dine at Terra, located in the three-story Eataly emporium at Valley Fair. We were right on time, but I wish we had arrived earlier. Terra is on the top floor of a vast specialty shop purveying a mind-boggling abundance of Italian edibles. I wish I’d come earlier so I could take my time perusing the store from bottom to top, but we had reservations. And reservations are hard to come by at this hot spot, so shopping would have to wait.

We were seated at a table for two in the charming roof-top atrium, hanging flowers and plants providing pretty greenery and the mix of metal, wood, and glass made for a chic dining room, giving the space an open feeling, even if the tables were a little close together. Terra is a good date night spot and, judging by the celebrations around us, a good place to celebrate birthdays and special occasions. To start, we explored the cocktail menu. We were intrigued by the Build Your Own Gin & Tonic menu where you can choose from a selection of fancy gins to mix with your choice of fruits, flavored tonics, and herbs, but the smoked cocktail menu beckoned and we followed. We sampled the Diabolik – coffee bean infused rye with cherry liquor and chocolate bitters; it was slightly bitter, sweet, and smoky, delicately balanced in just the right amounts. Next was the Lafitte & Maracuja, a concoction of rum, Mezcal, and Campari with house made smoked pineapple syrup, passion fruit, lime juice and mint – fruity and refreshing with just a touch of smokiness. The cocktails did not disappoint. As we sipped our cocktails, a wooden board laden with slabs of toasted thick-sliced sourdough arrived, served with two domes of creamy buffalo milk butter and flaky salt. It should have come with lardo, unctuous pork fat usually seasoned with herbs and spices, but alas, 18

M

the kitchen had run out, so tonight, we could only taste the buffalo milk butter, which, when sprinkled with the flaky salt, was pretty tasty. The bread alone, was delightful – one of the highlights of dinner. I made a note to myself to pick up a loaf on my way out.

indistinctive tuna sauce – a little lemon and some flaky salt was all it needed. Terra has an extensive wine list, including a lovely selection of Barolos; it was a tough decision. Luckily, our server surprised us with the perfect glass to go with both the steak and the pasta.

We were told that we must order something cooked on the grill so we ordered the Gamberoni Alla Griglia, grilled prawns seasoned with fennel, chili, lemon, and olive oil. A plate with four fat, juicy prawns arrived swimming in olive oil and spices arrived and were devoured.

The grand finale was dessert – an event unto itself. A big bowl containing a pale, creamy mountain of housemade gelato was wheeled to our table and scooped into a bowl; shaved chocolate, pistachios, and amaro cherries were added as requested. The combination of smooth gelato with the bittersweet chocolate, the crunchy pistachio and the drunken cherries were sublime. I added gelato and amaro cherries to my grocery list. Not to be ignored are the beignets – warm, freshly fried, rolled in sugar and resting atop a fluffy Chantilly cream – enjoyed with an expertly crafted espresso martini, it was a perfect ending to a delightful dinner at Terra.᯽

Of course, pasta at Terra is a must. The Chitarra Alla Nerano was recommended. The pasta was like a thick spaghetti, sturdy enough to carry the bits of fried zucchini and with enough surface to attract the Parmigiano Reggiano. It was toothsome and satisfying. From the grill we tried the Bistecca Alla Griglia, coulotte steak, perfectly charred, served with crisp potatoes. We ordered a side of the charred broccolini which was served atop a rather

A NIGHT AT THE PUB:

Brazen Head in San Francisco

S

an Francisco has so many amazing restaurants and everyone has had to step up their game as a result. Earlier this year, we discovered Brazen Head – a neighborhood eatery and bar located in Cow Hollow, right between the Marina and Pacific Heights. The streets are usually packed and parking is literally nonexistent. But you wanna know a secret? There’s a motel across the street and, for five bucks, they’ll let you park your car in their lot – just ask the guy at the front desk. This information is top secret – don’t tell nobody. This place radiates old school. There are only about fifteen tables, including a couple of cozy booths and an old wooden bar where plenty of locals are seated in their usual spots. Chatty bartenders churn out endless orders of cocktails and wine while making conversation. The vibe is old world English pub with dark wood walls covered in old black and white photographs, and the signature stained-glass door. You’ll fee like you’ve walked into a genuine pub in London. The restaurant and bar open at 5PM and serve late into the night; reservations are not accepted. The best time to go is during the week, as soon as it opens, before it gets too busy and procuring a table is almost impossible. Weekends are crazy, parking nearby is impossible, and the service is slow. We have visited several times now and tried nearly everything on the small menu. We’ve never been disappointed. For starters, they make a wonderful classic French Onion Soup – beefy broth topped with gooey melted Gruyère and mozzarella cheese. And there’s a delicious Heirloom Tomato & Burrata made with ripe heirloom tomatoes and the creamiest Burrata. Another favorite appetizer is the Garlic Bulb & Camembert with Prosciutto. A whole roasted garlic bulb, caramelized and

20

M

rib. The meat was perfectly medium and the sauce was on point – rich with brandy. Another favorite is the Chicken Marsala which is a sauteed breast of chicken with a classic sweet marsala and mushroom sauce. I see this on a lot of menus, and sometimes it seems like a throwaway dish, but they really nail their sauces at Brazen Head. The Lobster Ravioli is a generous serving of lobster-filled pasta in a rich, creamy cheese sauce. The sauce is tasty and bread is required for sopping up every drop. If you still have not found your dish, those meatballs and marinara show up again as entrees as “Penne and Meatballs” and a “Meatball Sandwich.” Plus, there is an excellent burger. And for vegetarians, there’s a burger made with the Impossible Burger, and they do it well. The vegetarian in our party who was dubious at first, with the Impossible Burger being almost the only vegetarian option on the menu, was surprisingly delighted.

spread on a slice of crisp toast, slathered with cheese, then topped with a sliver of salty Prosciutto. On our last visit, we tried the Meatballs Marinara and we’re glad we did – a simple dish made with ground veal, pork, and beef served in a pool of tangy housemade marinara. Ask for an extra serving of their excellent garlic bread to mop up the sauce. Add a cocktail or a glass of wine and already, you have a great meal! But we didn’t come all this way to ignore the entrees! The go-to dish at Brazen Head is their house specialty: Prime Rib. It’s a must-have. What it is, actually, is a slice of rib eye Roast, no bones, roasted and served in the style of a traditional prime rib. It has all the slow roasted beef goodness you’d

expect but what makes Brazen Head’s prime rib special is the lightly herbed pool of shallot-imbued jus. Of course, a small dish of horseradish sauce is included on the side. You are offered the choice of a hearty loaded baked potato or their garlic mashed potatoes – choose the mashed potatoes – they’re garlicky and buttery and because they’re served au jus, there’s a meaty savoriness to them. To round out the meal to perfection, there’s the creamed spinach which is warm and creamy and delicious. The NY strip topped with brandy veal demi-glaze cream sauce is said to be their most popular dish so we gave it a shot. It was very good and I will remember it anytime they run out of prime

Save some room for dessert. They have all the regulars…creme brûlée, carrot cake, cheesecake, bread pudding. But here are the two must-taste items. First is the Fallen Angel Torte, a chocolate mousse on top of a super chocolatey torte, topped with whipped cream. Ask for extra whipped cream. And always get the Upper Crust Fruit Pie du jour. There’s a different pie every day and it is always fresh and is served a la mode. Upper Crust is a local pie maker and their fruit pies have an amazing ultra-flaky buttery crust you can only get from a pie specialist. You might want to order dessert when you order your entrees because the pie is known to sell out. Enjoy the sweets with a cappuccino, port, or one of their dessert drink specialties. Next time, you’re in San Francisco, eat at the Brazen Head. It’s a little off the beaten path, but the vibe, the drinks, and the food are all worth the side-step.᯽ Brazen Head 3166 Buchanan St San Francisco, CA 94123 415-921-7600 brazenheadsf.com

What I Ate in

FRENCH POLYNESIA By R O B E R T Q U I H U I S

SOMEHOW, THROUGH MIRACULOUS GOOD FORTUNE, I FOUND MYSELF IN FRENCH POLYNESIA. I arrived not really

knowing what to expect beyond the bright blue lagoons and towering coconut trees you see on postcards. The people here have a symbiotic relationship with the land. There's something about the environment where people are content to take only what they need from the land and the sea. Somehow this lack of competition along with the isolation from the western world has inspired a pride in the nation's history and a preservation of their recipes. I hit the streets of Moorea, the island closest to Tahiti, with Heimata, a local chef who has traveled the world working in kitchens and taking culinary courses. He returned to his homeland where he became a co-founder of Tama’a Street Food Tours. He introduced me to many of the local hot spots while explaining their history and how they fit into the lives of the surrounding residents. His goal is not to take people away from the fine dining one would enjoy at the resorts, but to expose them to a world of flavors unique to the islands. Not only did we talk about the eateries themselves, but we went as far back as the history of the ingredients. To begin at the beginning, we have to start with what makes French Polynesia so magnificent in the first place, the reef. The unbelievably clear surrounding waters are teeming with life. During my entire trip, I was hard pressed to find a beach where I couldn't look down and see droves of neon fish swimming past my feet. As it turns out many of those fish are quite delicious. I was fortunate enough to try the snapper, the tuna, and the parrot fish. Delicious grilled, raw, or baked into a very

interesting loaf, these are the core protein of most dishes on the island. While there is livestock being farmed on the island, most dishes I encountered seemed to revolve around fish and poultry. To compliment the meats, there are multiple versions of every tropical fruit you can think of. From what I'm told, centuries ago, the natives climbed to the mountain tops and planted as many seeds as they could so they would trickle down the mountain and vegetate the then barren island. The humid rainforest climate and fertile volcanic soil resulted in a jungle of edible plants up for grabs to anyone and everyone. The saying is “ If you have feet, you can eat” – there’s always something delicious within walking distance. Most of the fresh fruit is free to everyone and hoarding is looked down upon, adding to the communal vibe. Now that we have a short background on what the original Polynesians had to work with, we can get into a very brief history that is reflected in their current culinary style. As the epithet French Polynesia suggests, the islands were, of course, colonized by the French. Thus, you will see many fine French cooking techniques applied, especially to their baked goods. I came across some delectable chocolate croissants and it seemed every mile I covered, I would pass someone carrying a bag full of baguettes home for dinner. Eventually, the Chinese were brought in as forced labor. This explains why many of the meats were glazed in a soy sauce-based marinade and many of the local snack shops took pride in their unique versions of chow mein. This fusion of flavors and cultures gave way to some unique delights I am yet to find anywhere else. Among the highlights were: Poisson Cru - This is the national dish of Tahiti and it’s so simple and delicious

you'll be sure to want to try and make it back home. Made with fresh raw fish (usually tuna), cucumber, tomato, and onion marinating in tangy lime and creamy coconut milk, it's like a ceviche with a coconut cream twist. Its filling, refreshing and served everywhere on the island. Tuna Cake - I had this homemade for breakfast at the Moana Lodge on Huahine. It had the texture of banana bread sans any sweetness. Instead, it was baked with hearty fresh tuna. I know it sounds weird but I drizzled this savory cake with a mayo-based dressing and it essentially tasted like a condensed tuna sandwich. Crazy! But I loved it. Beef Heart Skewers - Barbecued in teriyaki sauce, this was exactly what it sounds like. The chunks of meat were so tender and lean, I wonder why I’ve never tasted this savorysweet treat up until now. I would take this over Wagyu any day! Banana Beignet and Tiare mā'ohi Ice Cream - The chunks of sweet, ripe banana paired perfectly with the soft, doughy center and the crisp sugary shell of the beignet. The tiare mā'ohi (national flower of Tahiti) ice cream was amazing. It had the texture of the handmade ice cream I used to make as a kid with a Ziploc bag and the rock salt. The tiare mā'ohi were like a giant version of the jasmine flowers I have back home in my yard, such a beautiful scent and an equally beautiful flavor. The trip and the food were pretty amazing and I hope that by sharing my experience, someone might be inspired to make a trip and check it out, or even just look up some of the recipes and try them at home. Either way I'm sure you will find that it's worth it. Until the next adventure, au revoir and māuruuru!᯽

ANY OF US WHO GREW UP IN THE AREA WILL RECALL DINING AT LA

FORÊT AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER.

It has been the go-to fine dining restaurant for many a special occasion for over 35 years – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations – if there was something to celebrate, La Forêt was the place to go. And it continues to be a favorite place for celebrations until now. Set deep in the Almaden Valley, the restaurant is located in what used to be the Hacienda Hotel which once housed employees of the Quicksilver Mining Company. Later, in the 1930’s, it became the Café Del Rio Restaurant before becoming what we now know as La Forêt. With the news of chef-owner of almost 40 years, John Davoudi retiring, there was fear that this legendary restaurant would close its doors – or perhaps worse --- the doors would remain open under new management, but would never be the same. But never fear, enter the Carrubba brothers, Maurice and Giuseppe, who are masters at transforming old-school restaurants. They take grand old restaurants and add their special touch without disrupting or taking away what we’ve always loved, but revitalizing exactly what needs to be revitalized.

A CLASSIC RESTAURANT REVISITED La Forêt is destined to be your new old favorite

If you have been to the Mount Hamilton Grandview Restaurant, you know what I’m talking about. The Carrubba brothers certainly have found their niche: Destination Dining. Both Mount Hamilton Grandview Restaurant and La Forêt are a bit off the beaten path, but with the views and the ambience to make the drive more than worth it. But aside from the pretty views (you’ll feel as if you have been transported to the French countryside), the food at La Forêt is excellent. La Forêt continues to impress with its classic French menu – many of the original dishes remain, as do the chefs, saucier, and wait staff. La Forêt also continues to use the same purveyors, with the addition of fresh eggs and produce from their own Grandview Farms. New touches at the restaurant include a gorgeous transformation in the bar

(brick walls, plush new seating and elegant chandeliers) and the dining room (dark wood paneling and beamed ceilings, rich wall paper and white linen tablecloths). The private dining area upstairs is equally lovely. Maurice credits his wife Melissa with La Forêt’s refreshed vintage charm. But good looks aren’t everything and La Forêt has the food to prove it. From the bread to the cappuccino, everything is absolutely delicious. We put ourselves in the capable hands of Giuseppe Carrubba to guide us through our meal. We started with the bread – and what an auspicious beginning. The bread is baked by La Forêt’s in-house baker – a flavorful sourdough with a crusty exterior and a tender, chewy interior, perfect for sopping up amazing sauces. And then the escargot, which were perfectly prepared (not chewy as can happen when not properly cooked) and submerged in a flavorful butter and Pernod sauce. Next came a delicious Romaine Salad made with crisp Romaine lettuce, fresh chevre, and toasted pumpkin seeds. The next course was our favorite: Lobster Ravioli – lobster encased in handmade pasta, made with the fresh eggs from Grandview Farms, swimming in a stunning sauce redolent with rich lobster and fish stock, plenty of butter and a touch of thyme. This is something that should not be missed. Our next course was Roasted Elk with Portobello mushrooms and a savory cognac reduction. La Forêt is known for serving a variety of wild game and the elk did not disappoint. By this time we were nearly defeated by Giuseppe’s tour of the menu, but the famed La Forêt

soufflé is an experience not to be missed. The same chef has been whipping up this heavenly concoction for many years and he is, indeed, an expert at his craft. The soufflé is light as clouds with just a whisper of Grand Marnier. If it’s been a while since you’ve been to La Forêt, or if you have not had the chance to visit La Forêt in its new incarnation, be sure to take the scenic drive into Almaden Valley to experience what fine dining is truly about. The welcoming and attentive service, a lovely setting and remarkable food are sure to make this old favorite a new one again.■
