Dear Friends,

Transition

We

are delighted to welcome you back to Response after a one-issue absence. We hope you missed us! Transition is the theme of this issue and it was a perfect storm of transitions that caused our absence in the fall. Sisters Mary Lou Simcoe and Patricia Butler retired from their positions as Director of Communications and Mission Advancement, respectively, at the end of August and at that same time, our Province Leadership Team, Sisters Patricia Heath, Yvette Ladurantaye, and Mary Lou Sullivan, completed their term of office. We are grateful to these five talented and faithful women religious for their dedicated service to our province over many years. Transitions bring new people and new possibilities into our lives and in this issue of Response we want to introduce you to both. While you may have seen our names or pictures in earlier issues, we’d like to introduce ourselves to you. Our new Director of Communications and Mission Advancement, Kenneth Gustin, will introduce himself and describe some new possibilities he sees as his work with us unfolds. And we’ll tell you about a congregational meeting we participated in recently that foresees major transitions and new possibilities for our beloved congregation. When we began our new ministry as the Leadership Team for the United States Province, we had travelled different paths to this significant transition in our lives. Carol and Joan, natives of Fall River, MA and Pawtucket, RI had been educated by Holy Union Sisters, joined the congregation soon after finishing secondary school, and spent their early years in religious life as teachers in elementary and secondary schools. Originally from

Brooklyn, NY, Kathee met her first Holy Union Sister as a young professional working as the maître d’ of the executive dining room in a major investment firm on Wall Street. All three of us have been blessed by the opportunity to study theology at the graduate level. Joan and Kathee have long been pastoral associates in lively parishes where they formed lasting friendships and relationships. Fostering the flourishing of religious life itself, within our congregation and through programs and organizations that serve vowed religious, was often Carol’s ministry. All of us have maintained some involvement with our previous ministries and colleagues, Kathee and Joan in the parishes they served, Carol with the Religious Formation Conference. While our transition still continues, there is much we have learned in the past six months and your faithfulness and generosity to our province lead the list!

Your steadfast support, both moral and financial, since we began our ministry to our sisters has touched us deeply. We look forward to being in regular contact with you over the next several years; we promise you a secure place in our hearts and in our prayer … and we know our sisters join us in this promise to you! With our affection and our gratitude,

Director’s Column Kenneth Gustin Director of Mission Advancement and Communications

It is a joy to be joining the sisters this year in the role of Director of Mission Advancement & Communications! As the product of a family steeped in Catholic education I find my life coming full circle, as I return to where I belong, with the sisters again. After several decades in corporate marketing and sales positions, I finally asked God for guidance on what my next role should be. And so, I found my way here. My intention is to use what I have learned in my career to increase the visibility of the extraordinarily beautiful works being done by the Holy Union Sisters, so that those with a kind and open heart will be moved to support their efforts financially.

exploring several social media platforms, enhancing our website, and creating more opportunities for us to engage with each other directly. These new vehicles will not replace the ways we’ve always stayed in touch with you over the years. Those will continue. Rather this is a broadening of them for those who choose to use them. With so many now using social media platforms we want to give everyone the opportunity to connect with us, allowing us to share information with you on a more regular basis. These platforms also provide a means for you to communicate with us via comments, which we hope you will take advantage of. This new effort will also allow us to grow our exposure to new populations who may not know us and who may be interested in our mission, history, and faith. Social media can be a powerful tool in spreading the Word of God to all nations, as Jesus commissioned us all to do. If you have ideas on this new undertaking or want to share the platforms you use, please write us a note or visit our website at www.holyunionsisters.org and click on the Contact Us tab. Please know we are praying for you, and I ask that you pray for us as we undertake this exciting new path together!

I’m fortunate to be following Sister Patricia Butler, SNDeN in this role. After many years of her excellent work, I hope to build upon her efforts representing the province to you, our wonderful friends and supporters. We will be putting in place some new communication channels to help keep you informed on the various ministries the sisters are involved in. We’ll also begin sharing helpful information and faith formation materials to aid you in your spiritual journey. This effort will include

*In tribute to the sisters, who for many years called, "Be Good!" out the front door of the school as we ran out into the midday sun at the end of the school day. I have used this closing for decades in all my correspondence, and so I humbly pass their advice on to you.

Jane E. Sullivan, Esq.

If You’re Exploring Estate Planning Options Estate Planning is something we all need to do regardless of age, marital status or wealth. You want to do the right thing for yourself and your family. You want to protect your financial future by preserving your assets. You want the security of knowing that your estate will be handled exactly the way you want. Estate Planning involves putting the right legal and financial pieces in place to provide for your own financial security and that of your loved ones. The Holy Union Sisters would like you to know that there is an array of ways that you can remember Holy Union in your Estate Plan. Including the Holy Union Sisters in your Estate Plan demonstrates your love and support for the Holy Union mission.

• You may leave Holy Union a bequest of cash, stock, real estate or other property in your Will or in your Trust. A Will designates to whom you wish to leave your probate assets, that is, assets that are titled in your individual name at the time of your death. The probate of a Will is the Court process that validates the Will, and is a public and potentially expensive process. Creating and funding a Living Trust is a way to avoid the time, expense and public nature of the probate process. If you already have a Will, you may amend it by adding a Codicil to include a provision for Holy Union. Likewise, a Trust Amendment can add Holy Union as a beneficiary to your Trust.

A different approach would be to name Holy Union as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement account. Because Holy Union is a tax exempt entity, the added benefit of leaving a tax deferred account such as an IRA to Holy Union is that no income taxes will be paid on the distribution. Gifts to Holy Union through your estate plan or through lifetime planning qualify for a charitable deduction, for both estate tax and income tax planning purposes. continued on page 15

ENLARGED GENERAL COUNCIL “Are We Not of Interest to One Another? “

Sister Paula Coelho, our congregation leader, quoted these words of the poet Elizabeth Alexander in her opening remarks to the Enlarged General Council which met in Dublin, Ireland, March 1431st. Indeed, we are of interest to one another and so we want to share with you something of our experience in Dublin and the direction taken there. But first, what’s an Enlarged General Council? The ordinary governance of our congregation is the responsibility of our General Council which currently includes Sisters Paula (American), Teresa Finn (Irish), Caroline Njah Bongnavti (Cameroonian), and Ilsa Jofre (Argentinian). Our Constitutions call for regular meetings of an Enlarged General Council (EGC), that is, a gathering of the General Council and leadership teams and others from the different areas of the congregation. And so, some 30 of us met in Dublin in March; we were mostly Holy Union Sisters holding leadership positions in the different areas of the congregation, but the group also included translators, secretarial staff and others The theme of the EGC was with administrative respon- Living the Vision Today sibilities, and resource per- and into the Future...

sons such as a canon lawyer, a liturgist, and the congregation’s financial advisors. The EGC was literally a time of transition for us. We left snow in Boston to find daffodils and forsythia blooming in Ireland. Suddenly we were in the middle of different accents and languages, and for the first time, we were participating in an EGC as members of a province leadership team. The theme of the EGC was Living the Vision Today and into the Future and in the opening ritual, Sister Evelyn Treacy, liturgist, described us as “people of the in-between.” The description fit! Because we are of interest to one another, much of our time was spent in conversation together and often these were courageous conversations. Each area of the congregation reported on its context, the ways it attempts to live our congregation’s vision, the challenges it and the congregation as a whole face now and will likely face in five years’ time, and the gift each area is to the whole.

In spite of the goodness and grace we see everywhere in our world, we are all facing serious challenges.

all facing serious challenges. Most immediate is the violence devastating the anglophone sections of Cameroon, but unrest, insecurity, and division mark most of the areas in which we live and engage in mission. Our “Holy Union world” reflects global reality: in the north, our population is aging and diminishing even as a young and growing population characterizes the south; our financial resources are unevenly dis- LEFT TO RIGHT: Sisters Brid Long, S.S.L., Marie Genevieve Fossaert, Alice Nyaga, tributed, with our strength Kathleen Corrigan, Paula Coehlo concentrated in the north while the south is an area of greater need. We claim ours is an Incarnational spirituality, grounded in reality, in the concrete and particular. How does this situation call us to respond? How do we become a more “holy union” in these circumstances? We pondered the implications of our name, Holy Union, and asked where it might lead us as we confront our reality today. Our questions, reflections, and courageous conversations led us to see that we are being asked to restructure the whole congregation … governance, personnel, and financial resources … in response to the signs of our times and to our present reality and we are committed to doing just that. We are in a time of transition, for sure; yes, we certainly are “people of the in-between,” between what has been and what will be; and we are being led to new possibility: a new way to be a more Holy Union in this our time. As this process unfolds in coming years, we know you will make this journey with us and support us through it and we will keep you informed of its progress.

OUR JUBILARIANS

Sister Adrienne DeChamplain – 80th S. Adrienne Elise

&Today

Yesterday

This year we honor ten Jubilarians, all of whom have dedicated their lives to ever-evolving ministries. Their vocations are living examples of transitions guided by God’s plan and born out of the changing needs of our world over time. We hope you find several sisters below whom you may have had as a teacher, principal or guidance counselor. Though each has seen many transitions the one constant is a focus on remaining at the heart of the world revealing God’s love.

Sister Marilyn was not a teacher, but rather her vocation pointed her to other service areas. Visit our website to learn more about her ministries.

To learn more about our Jubilarians more recent ministries since they left teaching please visit our website: www.holyunionsisters.org. Many of them have immersed themselves in extraordinary works in locations all over the world. Pope Francis recently advised those with a religious vocation that the “shepherd must have the smell of the sheep on him”. This theme is reflected in the sisters’ charism, to be at the heart of the world revealing God’s love. Please take a few minutes to see just how the sisters have been living out that vocation. I promise, you’ll find some unexpected surprises! May God bless you all !

A THANK YOU EXPRESSED BY A MOTHER IN HAITI Sister Eileen Davey recently returned from Port-au-Prince, Haiti after 18 years. She was one of several Holy Union Sisters ministering to the people of Haiti just outside its capital city, and was there during the devastating earthquake of 2010. She started a Nutrition Center for the younger children, recognizing many were under nourished. The Center ensures at least one hot meal a day for them, enabling the development of the fine motor skills they need in pre-school and beyond. Below is a brief remembrance of an incident which touched her heart.

There was a family of girls who

Center. At first, I didn't know the relationship, but I came to find out that Soraya was the granddaughter of this mother and the child of one of the three girls. The older sister of Maria must have been more than five years old when we opened the Nutrition Center.

attended the Center several years ago. Maria, Shirley, Ellie and Soraya were their names. Maria, the first child was in the first or second group of children in the Nutrition Center, 18 years ago. I used to watch her put some food from her plate into a container to bring home. Maria's mother took the opportunity Two years later Shirley and Ellie, her twin sisters entered to say how much she has appreciated the Nutrition Center. Several the Nutrition Center when the girls years later Soraya entered the were younger.

I give this background because Sr. Helen, one of my colleagues in Haiti, recently told me that Maria's mother was asking for me. She had come to ask for

• Another tax-wise planned gift would be to create a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust that can provide you with income for life, with the remainder going to Holy Union to further its mission. Alternatively, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can be made to Holy Union from a retirement account during your lifetime, which can satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) up to a maximum of $100,000.00. The QCD must be paid directly from your account to Holy Union, so it must be coordinated carefully with the account or plan administrator and Holy Union.

help with a medical concern for Ellie who was in the hospital. As I am no longer in Haiti, Sr. Helen was able to assist her. Maria's mother took the opportunity to say how much she has appreciated the Nutrition Center when the girls were younger. She said, “I don't believe I could have made it thru if it was not for Sr. Eileen and yourself”. Maria's mother would stop by the house at different times to say hello and show off the girls. It was good to see these tall, slim girls looking so good and confident, and it touched my heart that she would take the time to come and say thank you. There are other stories of gratitude, this is just one.

God bless each and every one of you. Sister Eileen Davey

All of our supporters have much to be grateful for since it is because of people like you that Maria's family was able to make it thru the tough times. I've always said that I could have done nothing in Haiti if it was not for the good and generous people who supported, and still support, our Haiti project. Thank you again.
