History - Honor - Team

For over fifty years the Mounds View Mustangs have

been a pillar of success in Minnesota boys’ high school basketball. The Mustangs have made 13 appearances in the State Tournament with 2 State Championships and 12 Conference Championships. There have only been two coaches in school history, Jim Geske and Ziggy Kauls. The current coach, Ziggy Kauls is 3rd all-time in wins for the state of Minnesota. The program has also produced three Mr. Basketball Award winners since its inception in 1975 (Steve Schlotthauer 1986, Nick Horvath 1999, and Travis Busch 2005). On the cover, you will see the Seniors on this year’s team along with images of Coach Kauls, the 1999 State Championship team, Mark Landsberger, Steve Schlotthauer, Nick Horvath and Travis Busch, all great contributors to Mounds View basketball.

The 2010-2011 team is a group of hard working men who play with passion, energy and respect. The fusion of History, Honor and Team basketball continues at Mounds View. First Mounds View Coach Honored The Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Honor has been established to honor those persons who have helped to improve/promote/ and or serve basketball in Minnesota. To be eligible for the Hall of Honor, a person must have been involved with basketball for at least 20 years. Mounds View is proud to have in this first class of inductees, our first Coach, Jim Geske a “founding father” of the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association. Coach Kauls shared this photo of “open gym” from 1966 when it was actually outside. This was a year before he became Head Basketball Coach and was actually hired to supervise open gym by the Mounds View 621 Public Recreation Department... times change...

Personal Sports Memorable Moment - shooting 8 free throws in a row last year due to a Roseville player’s mop-tossing tantrum and coach’s ejection. Just bizarre! I’m inspired by Herb Brook’s pre-game speech in the “Miracle” – pure adrenaline rush. My favorite player is Dirk Novitski

Beating Cretin in football in the first round of the State Tournament and a pick six in the same game certainly standout as highlights. “Never settle for success” is inspirational ...and I love tacos. Advice to younger players... get in the gym!
