HUSKERS LOOK TO ROLL TO SIXTH NCAA TITLE IN 2017 The Nebraska bowling team returns to the lanes for its 20th season with hopes of adding another NCAA championship to its trophy case in 2016-17. After finishing as NCAA runner-up in 2016, the Cornhuskers have their sights set on a sixth NCAA title this season. The Huskers, who have competed in an NCAArecord four-consecutive national championship matches, return nine bowlers from last year’s talented squad, including three All-Americans from 2016. “I think the group is very cohesive,” head coach Bill Straub said. “The chances of success, at least by being supportive of one another, are excellent. We’ve got a lot of people on the team that have been stars in their own city or their own country, for that matter, and it should lead to a good season.” Straub returns for his 20th season at the helm, and looks to lead Nebraska back to the National Collegiate Bowling Championship for a 14th-straight season. Nebraska is one of just two programs to have qualified for every NCAA Championship since bowling became an NCAAsanctioned sport in the 2003-04 season. Assistant head coach Paul Klempa also returns to the Huskers for his 20th season in a prominent coaching role. Seniors Gazmine Mason and Briana Zabierek and junior Julia Bond will look to lead the Huskers this season, as each brings All-America honors and NCAA Championship experience to the lanes in 2016-17. Bond, a first-team All-American in 2016 and the 2015 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Bowler, led the team with a staggering average of 210 last season. Mason has earned third-team All-America honors in each of the last two seasons and posted a sizzling 204.4 average a year ago. Zabierek earned honorable mention All-America honors in 2016, and came on strong at the end of the season to become one of Nebraska’s most consistent performers out of the leadoff spot. She averaged a strong 203.6 last year. Bond and Mason were both members of Junior Team USA during the summer of 2016 and won multiple medals for their country in addition to gaining a wealth of international experience. “Gazmine and Julia had excellent success through the summer playing for the U.S. (Junior) National Team and winning gold medals for their country,” Straub said. “That says a lot to me. It means they’re really proud of what they’re doing. They’re succeeding on a very high level, and we’re very lucky they’re with us. Bri is such a great leader and is our captain. She’s really good at that and an excellent player as well.”

The Huskers will hope to replace two seniors from 2016, Bethany Hedley and Melanie Crawford, who were forces in the lineup for multiple seasons and strong leaders both on and off the lanes. Three of the top candidates to grab the last two spots in the rotation include senior Alexandra Mosquera, junior Kelly Belzeski and sophomore Meghan Straub. Mosquera has provided valuable depth throughout her Husker career, but looks to take a step forward and become a consistent contributor as a senior. Belzeski averaged a shade under 200 last season, and looks to gain a top five roster spot as a junior. Straub, the daughter of Nebraska head coach Bill and former National Collegiate Bowler of the Year Kim (Berke) Straub, saw extended action as a freshman, and hopes to take the next step this season. Kelly Huddleston, Julie Lohman and Allison Morris each redshirted last season, and will look to add depth to the Huskers in 2016-17 with hopes of breaking into the rotation. Raquel Orozco joins the Nebraska program this season as a freshman. A native of Tijuana, Mexico, Orozco brings international experience to the Husker roster as she has been a member of Junior Team Mexico for five years. She becomes the first player from Mexico to join the Husker bowling program. Estefania Prieto also brings

international experience to Nebraska, joining the Huskers as a freshman from Bogota, Colombia. The Huskers will begin their season at the Wildcat Invitational in Orlando, Fla., in October, before returning to the KAT Klash in early November. The Huskers have won the past two editions of the Klash, which is hosted by 2014 NCAA champion Sam Houston State. A week later, the Huskers will return to the lanes for the final time in the 2016 calendar year at the Warhawk Classic in Kenosha, Wis., where NU won a season ago. A trip to Arkansas will kick off the new year for the Huskers, as Nebraska looks to claim the Mid-Winter Invitational for a second time in five seasons. Two consecutive trips to Texas will follow, first at the Prairie View A&M Invitational at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, followed by the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Invitational just outside of Houston. NU won the PVAMU Invitational a season ago, and finished third at the Ladyjack Invitational, which is hosted by 2016 national champion Stephen F. Austin. The next week, the Huskers will travel to the Windy City for the Valparaiso Invitational. The Huskers have finished in the top three in each of the last six seasons at Valparaiso’s Crusader Classic as the tournament moves to Chicago this season. A week later, NU will head to the Lincoln Women’s Invitational in Kansas City. The Huskers will return home for the annual Big Red Invitational, held March 2-4 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. Nebraska has scored the highest overall total pinfall at the tournament in both of the past two seasons. The 2016-17 regular season wraps up at the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tenn., in midMarch. The Huskers finished third at the loaded tournament last season, while Mason earned MVP honors at the 2015 edition. The 2017 National Collegiate Bowling Championship will be held at River Center Baton Rouge in Louisiana, where the Huskers will look to claim their sixth NCAA title.

Bill Straub has been the head coach for the Nebraska women’s bowling team since 1996. However, his dedication and commitment to Nebraska bowling runs much deeper, as he coached both the men’s and women’s teams for over 20 years dating back to when both programs were club sports. During his tenure, the Husker men’s and women’s teams have combined for 12 national titles in the past 26 years. The Nebraska women’s bowling program won national championships in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015, while the men’s program captured national titles in 1990 and 1996. The 2003-04 season was a huge success for Straub and his Huskers, as bowling competition was held at the NCAA level for the first time. Nebraska capped the season by winning the first-ever NCAA championship, rallying through the loser’s bracket to defeat Central Missouri State in the nationally televised final. Shannon Pluhowsky was named the MVP of the NCAA Championship. Straub then guided the Huskers to a second NCAA title in 2005, as Amanda Burgoyne was named the NCAA Championship MVP. Straub and his team captured the 2009 NCAA title as Husker Cassandra Leuthold earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament. He also led the Huskers to the 2013 NCAA championship, using a great all-around effort led by MVP Lizabeth Kuhlkin to defeat Vanderbilt 4.5 to 2.5. Most recently, Straub guided the Huskers to the 2015 NCAA championship that was played in front of an ESPN nationally televised audience. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin by a score of 4-2 at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, behind strong efforts by Kuhlkin and Julia Bond, who was named MVP of the tournament. In 2016, Straub led Nebraska to a national runner-up finish after reaching the NCAA championship match for a fourth-consecutive season. The Huskers were victorious in four of
their 10 events in 2015-16. Bond earned firstteam All-America honors, while Gazmine Mason garnered her second-straight third-team AllAmerica award. Briana Zabierek was also an honorable-mention NTCA All-American for the Big Red in the 2015-16 season. In the 13 years that the NCAA has sponsored bowling, Nebraska is one of two programs to have qualified for the NCAA Championship in every season (Central Missouri). For his efforts, Straub was honored as the National Tenpin Coaches Association Coach of the Year in both 2005 and 2013. Straub has coached seven bowlers who have been tabbed for a total of nine NTCA Collegiate Player-of-the-Year awards, including Kim (Berke) Straub (1992), Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty (2000), Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Burgoyne (2007), Leuthold (2010) and most recently Kuhlkin in 2015. Straub has also coached four bowlers to NTCA Rookie-of-theYear honors, including Berke (1989), Pluhowsky (2001), Baker (2005) and Leuthold (2007). Along with winning 10 national titles, Straub’s squads have not been ranked lower than seventh in the top 25 team rankings since becoming a varsity sport in 1997. Straub’s bowling history goes far beyond the University of Nebraska. A Lincoln native, Straub had an illustrious professional career, both locally and nationally. A member of the Nebraska Bowling Hall of Fame, Omaha Bowling Hall of Fame and the Lincoln Bowling Hall of Fame, Straub has gained more honors and titles than any other bowler from the state of Nebraska. His numerous local, state and national titles give proof that his success as a bowler and coach are mirrored by the success of his bowlers. Straub graduated from Kensington University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He and his wife Kim, a former four-time All-American and 1992 National Collegiate Bowler of the Year, have one daughter, current Husker bowler Meghan.

ASSISTANT HEAD COACH | 20TH SEASON. Paul Klempa returns for his 20th season as the Nebraska bowling assistant head coach, while his association with the program dates back to 1992. After a collegiate career in which he earned All-America honors as a senior in 1994, Klempa remained in Lincoln and was hired as the Huskers’ assistant coach in 1997. During his tenure as a coach at Nebraska, Klempa has helped guide the Huskers to seven national championships - including back-toback NCAA titles in 2004 and 2005, and NCAA championships in 2009, 2013 and most recently, 2015. Klempa has tutored numerous bowlers who earned All-America honors during their careers and 12 student-athletes who went on to represent various national teams. Klempa served as interim head coach for the Nebraska bowling team for much of the 2013-14 season, while head coach Bill Straub recovered from a medical issue. Klempa led the Huskers to a pair of tournament titles and a No. 2 national ranking. He also helped guide the Huskers to their 11th-straight NCAA Championship appearance. “I thought he did a great job,” Straub said. “He gives me a great supporting cast. It helps me think better when I need it. Paul didn’t have that option (that season). He had to make the main decisions on his own. Week after week, it is taxing.” “I think Coach grew more by having more responsibility,” Straub added. “He not only had
his own duties, he had most of mine to boot. I think that is a growth period, and he performed admirably.” Klempa helped guide Nebraska to its fifth NCAA title in 2015. Liz Kuhlkin was named the National Collegiate Bowler of the Year, while Julia Bond and Gazmine Mason earned thirdteam All-America honors. Bond was also named the Most Outstanding Bowler in the NCAA Championship. In 2016, Klempa helped Nebraska to a national runner-up finish after reaching the NCAA championship match for a fourthconsecutive season. Bond earned first-team All-America honors, while Mason collected her second-straight third-team All-America award for the Huskers. Briana Zabierek also claimed honorable-mention All-America honors for the Big Red. A native of Johnstown, N.Y., Klempa graduated from Nebraska in 1994 with a degree in psychology. Kim (Berke) Straub came to the Nebraska bowling program after an illustrious bowling career, both as an amateur and as a professional. As a Husker, she was a four-time NTCA All-American (1989-92) and a three-time NTCA Scholastic All-American. Additionally, she was named the 1992 National Collegiate Bowler of the Year. An eight-time champion with the Professional Women’s Bowling Association, Straub retired from her athletic professional career and is now Husker bowling’s office manager. A native Nebraskan from Beatrice, Straub is a member of the Lincoln Bowling Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Bowling Hall of Fame and is a 10-time Lincoln Bowling Association Player of the Year. The most decorated female bowler in the history of the state, she graduated with distinction from Nebraska in 1992 with a degree in business administration. Kim and her husband, Bill, who is the head coach of the Nebraska bowling program, have one daughter, current Husker bowler Meghan.
Tom Dufresne enters his 19th year as head women’s gymnastics physical therapist and athletic trainer in 2016-17, and serves as the athletic trainer responsible for women’s golf, bowling and rifle. Dufresne also assists in the coordination of rehabilitation for Nebraska’s Olympic sports, including men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball, men’s and women’s track and field and softball. A former head student athletic trainer at Nebraska, Dufresne joined the Husker athletic medicine staff as an assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist in 1997. He previously served as an assistant athletic trainer at UCLA for nine years before receiving his master’s degree in physical therapy in 1991 at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, Calif. Originally from Ventura, Calif., Dufresne graduated from Nebraska in 1980. His brother, Mark, was a letterman on the NU football team in 1976 and 1977. Tom and his wife, Iffat, have been married for 31 years.

Sheri Hastings serves as an academic counselor at Nebraska. Hastings has been with the athletic department since August of 2006. She will serve as the academic counselor for women’s basketball, rifle, bowling, women’s gymnastics and soccer during the 2016-17 academic year. Before coming to Lincoln, Hastings served as a mathematics learning specialist for Student Support Services at UNL. Prior to that, she was a secondary mathematics teacher at Grand Island High School. A Grand Island native, Hastings earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics from UNL in 1987. Hastings continued her education at Nebraska and earned a master’s degree in educational psychology in 1995. Hastings and her husband, John, have three daughters, Megan, Kathryn and Abigail.
Stacey Burling enters her fifth year as a Life Skills Coordinator in 2016-17. Burling serves as the Life Skills sport counselor for bowling, football, soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis. She facilitates community outreach requests seeking student-athletes, as well as coordinates all other major outreach events. Additionally, she is responsible for coordinating the Husker Life Seminar, Letterwinner Induction Ceremonies, the annual Department of Athletics service abroad trip, as well as assisting with the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Burling earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management with a minor in business administration in 2009. She earned her master’s degree in marketing, communication studies and advertising from the University of Nebraska in May 2012. She served as a Life Skills Assistant at Nebraska while she was completing her master’s degree program.

Mike Arthur completed his 40th year with the Nebraska Athletic Department in 2015-16. In January of 2008, he was promoted to director of strength and conditioning for the athletic department. Arthur coordinates all aspects of strength and conditioning workouts for the Husker baseball and bowling programs. During his three decades at Nebraska, he has worked with all of the Huskers’ 24 athletic programs, coordinating sportspecific workout programs. Previously, Arthur was the associate director of athletic performance, coordinating workout programs for every sport. Arthur’s years at Nebraska have produced many advances in the strength programs used by athletes around the nation. His research helps Nebraska stay on the cutting edge, allowing Husker student-athletes to further develop their skills and talents. Arthur was named to the U.S. Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in June 2003, and earned the distinction of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association in 2001. He also received the Collegiate Strength Coach-of-theYear award in 1995. Arthur is from Lincoln and earned his bachelor’s degree from UNL in 1978. He and his wife, Reena have two daughters, Tara and Rachel, and a son, John.
James Hajek is in his second season as the communications contact for the Nebraska bowling and women’s gymnastics programs. He joined the Nebraska Communications Office as a studentassistant in August of 2015 after working as the associate director of broadcasting and media relations with the Los Angeles Dodgers rookie-league affiliate Ogden Raptors in 2015. A native of Omaha, Neb., Hajek graduated from Weber State University in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was a center on the men’s basketball team at Weber State for five seasons from 2010 to 2015 and participated in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament. He is pursuing a master’s degree in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration at Nebraska.

On Jan. 12, 2015, the Board of Regents appointed lifelong educator Hank M. Bounds, Ph.D., as the seventh president of the University of Nebraska. Bounds began his tenure as president on April 13, 2015, bringing with him a demonstrated record of expanding opportunities for students, improving higher education outcomes and efficiencies, and building successful partnerships with policymakers, donors and business leaders. Bounds grew up on a small farm in rural Mississippi, where his family raised hogs and cattle and he hauled hay. His service in the Army National Guard helped him pay for college, and he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi. Bounds has devoted his 25-year career to helping change students’ lives in the same way education opened doors in his own life. He began as a high school teacher, then rose to principal, superintendent and state superintendent before becoming Mississippi’s commissioner of higher education in 2009. In that role, he oversaw a complex system of eight public universities including research universities, regional universities, an academic health science center, historically black institutions, a law center, a school of veterinary medicine and 200 institutes and centers. Together the system enrolled 85,000 students, employed 26,000 faculty and staff, and operated with a combined annual budget of $4.5 billion, including $500 million in research and development. During every year of Bounds’ tenure as commissioner, student enrollment and degrees awarded by the institutions in the Mississippi system increased, by a total of 13.3 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. He advocated with legislative leadership for improved faculty compensation and providing greater opportunities for students. He also provided oversight for private fundraising in excess of $250 million per year. Bounds worked with the Board of Trustees to implement a performance-based allocation model that distributed funds equitably and rewarded universities for operating efficiently and achieving attainment outcomes. He designed an efficiencies plan that saved more than $90 million, an internal audit function, and a comprehensive diversity initiative that led to increased diversity among Mississippi faculty, staff and students. Bounds also worked with partners to increase educational attainment in Mississippi, including a Center for Education Innovation focused on improving learning opportunities for disadvantaged children. Bounds created an office to foster relationships among university researchers, business and industry, and economic developers. He was tapped by the business community to chair a major statewide initiative to create an action plan to improve Mississippi’s competitive position. Bounds brings this experience to the University of Nebraska, which he believes can serve as a catalyst for change and growth in the lives of students and people in the state and around the world. He is working to make the University of Nebraska a giant in higher education—for the benefit of the state, the country and the world. Bounds holds faculty appointments in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and in the Colleges of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He and his wife, Susie, are the parents of a son, Will, and a daughter, Caroline. They reside in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Board of Regents consists of eight voting members elected by district for six-year terms, and four non-voting student Regents, one from each campus, who serve during their tenure as student body president. The board supervises the general operations of the university, and the control and direction of all expenditures. He was named a fellow of ASAS in 2014 and, in 2015, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. In the recent years, she has appeared in media reports in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Washington Post, CBSSports.com, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Insider Higher Ed among others. She has presented to the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, the Texas Commission of Higher Education, NCAA regional conferences, law conferences and law firms, NACDA, and to universities and law colleges, including the Universities of Istanbul, Washington, Maryland, Oklahoma, Santa Clara, Arizona State, Baltimore, and Mississippi. Potuto is a past adviser to the Uniform Law Commissioners Committee to draft a sports agent statute, has drafted rules governing search and seizure and hearings for the Nebraska Racing Commission, and also has written on issues of gender equity in college athletics. She has authored numerous articles on sports law issues. She just completed articles on NCAA treatment of student-athlete violations and on NCAA and Olympic treatment of athlete violations (co-authored with an Olympic arbitrator). Potuto delivered the 2012 Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture. She serves on the senate’s intercollegiate athletics committee. She is a past member of the UNL academic senate and also served on Nebraska’s NCAA site certification steering committee. Potuto teaches constitutional law, procedure, federal jurisdiction, and sports law. She has been a visiting professor of law at the University of Arizona, Rutgers University, the Cardozo College of Law at New York’s Yeshiva University, the University of Oregon, the University of North Carolina, and Seton Hall University. She has worked as an assistant prosecutor in both the Essex and Morris County (N.J.) prosecutor’s offices. Potuto was project director and a drafter of the Uniform Law Commissioners Sentencing and Corrections Act, as well as the drafter for the Nebraska Supreme Court Committee to Draft Criminal Jury Instructions. She is the author of three books. She was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, and the Douglass Society. Potuto earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism at Rutgers’ Douglass College, and her master’s degree in English literature at Seton Hall. She earned her juris doctorate at the Rutgers Law College. She is a member of the bars of Nebraska and New Jersey and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for Nebraska and New Jersey.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS | FOURTH YEAR | WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER (1990). Shawn Eichorst was recruited and hired by the University of Nebraska in 2012 and quickly displayed an incredible passion for the University and for its student-athletes as well as the State of Nebraska. As the leader of a tradition-rich athletic program with 24 intercollegiate teams, 600-plus studentathletes and more than 325 full-time employees, Eichorst has relied on a strong value system and a student-centered approach to lead the department. Nebraska’s primary mission is to provide student-athletes with the resources and support they need to be successful in academics, athletics and life. The health, safety and welfare of student-athletes are priority one and the essence of every decision made at Nebraska. Since Eichorst arrived in Lincoln, resources and services in every student-athlete support unit have been reviewed, improved and enhanced, including academics, athletic medicine, life skills, nutrition, sports psychology, strength and conditioning and performance/research (i.e. Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) and the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3)). Eichorst has continued to move Nebraska forward aggressively with several new initiatives to enhance the student-athlete experience. Beginning in the summer of 2015, Nebraska became the first athletic department in the country to offer laptop computers to every studentathlete and created a data analytics department. Husker student-athletes in all sports now receive four-year, full cost of attendance-based scholarships. Nebraska was also the first-known department of athletics to create a post-eligibility opportunity (PEO) program, where every Husker letterwinner who graduates and has exhausted his or her eligibility has an opportunity to pursue either an internship, study abroad or graduate school program valued at $7,500. Nebraska was also one of the first institutions to create a spring service abroad trip, taking a team of student-athletes and staff to Guatemala in 2015 and to the Dominican Republic in 2016. Eichorst is in high demand and has made more than 500 public appearances around the state and country and his monthly radio show and “Connecting on Campus” online column provide opportunities to connect and share the incredible activities, initiatives and accomplishments happening at the greater University and in the department. As a member of the Chancellor’s Senior Administrative Team, Eichorst maintains a strong connection and collaboration between the University and athletics. A highly respected national leader, Eichorst was appointed in 2015 to the Division I Football Oversight Committee. Most recently, Eichorst was named co-chair of the NCAA Division I Football Recruiting ad hoc working group. He also serves on the Big Ten Conference Program and Budget Review Committee. Eichorst was the first Director of Athletics from any conference to visit the Big Ten Conference-based Academic Alliance (formerly known as the Committee on Institutional Cooperation) at its Champaign, Ill., headquarters. of 15 schools, including all 14 in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska is leading the Big Ten and the Big Ten Academic Alliance in several areas, including Digital Humanities and head injury research. Under Eichorst, Nebraska extended its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to 325 and its nation-leading total of NCAA Top Ten Award winners to 17. More than 700 awards were presented at the 26th Annual Student-Athlete Awards Show—A Night at the Lied. In 2015-16, 109 student-athletes earned undergraduate or graduate degrees and the Big Ten Conference honored 209 Husker student-athletes with academic All-Big Ten awards. For the first time in school history, all Nebraska teams had an NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 960 or higher and the overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 86 percent is the highest in program history. In addition, seven Husker teams (women’s basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, tennis and volleyball and men’s tennis) had a GSR of 100 percent as reported in the fall of 2015. During Eichorst’s tenure, Nebraska has won three NCAA team Championships, increasing its total to 27. In 2012-13 and in 2014-15, the Nebraska women’s bowling team earned the program’s fourth and fifth NCAA titles, while the Husker volleyball team won the 2015 NCAA Championship, the program’s fourth national title. In 2016, the Husker men’s track and field team swept the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championships and 14 Nebraska teams competed in NCAA postseason action, including bowling, football, volleyball, women’s swimming and diving, wrestling, softball, baseball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, rifle, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. In 2015-16, Nebraska produced 41 All-Americans who won 49 national awards, including 21 first-team honorees. In 2013-14, Nebraska became one of only two NCAA institutions – and the first Big Ten program in history – to qualify for a football bowl game, and advance to NCAA postseason in the major team sports of volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Additionally, Nebraska was the only institution to win a postseason game in six of those seven sports. Nebraska’s fan support continues to be unparalleled in college athletics. In 2015-16, top 15 national rankings for average attendance were reached across 10 sports—football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, soccer, softball, baseball and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Nebraska is the only school in the country to rank among the top 15 nationally in both football and men’s basketball attendance and in volleyball and women’s basketball. A tribute to loyal Husker fans, two sports lead the nation with consecutive home sellout streaks. Football had 347 consecutive sellouts and volleyball had 204 consecutive regular-season sellouts at the start of the 2016-17 season. Under Eichorst’s leadership, Nebraska continues to focus on improving its facilities and the game-day experience at all athletic venues. In August of 2015, Hibner Stadium and Barbara Hibner Field for soccer and the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center were completed. A new center-hung video board and sound system was installed in the Devaney Center in 2015 to improve the game-day experience for volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s gymnastics. In 2014, the largest wireless network system at a college football stadium in history was installed in Memorial Stadium, along with a state-of-the-art sound system. In the summer of 2013, Memorial Stadium expansion added the innovative NAPL inside East Stadium next to the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3). That same year, Nebraska’s men’s and women’s basketball teams became the primary tenants at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and the renovated Devaney Center became the home for Husker volleyball, wrestling and the men’s and women’s gymnastics programs. Eichorst came to Nebraska after serving as Director of Athletics at Miami in 2011 and 2012. He hired legendary men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga, who led Miami to the NIT Second Round in his first season and ACC regularseason and tournament titles as well as the NCAA Sweet 16 in his second. The women’s basketball program posted its highest national ranking in school history (No. 5) and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Miami women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight season, and the baseball team made its 40th consecutive NCAA appearance. The

Before heading to Miami, Eichorst was the Deputy Athletics Director at Wisconsin. He was the Chief Operating Officer and oversaw the department’s daily operations, as well as the men’s basketball program under the direction of Director of Athletics and former Husker Barry Alvarez. From 2004 to 2006, Eichorst served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration at South Carolina, overseeing the department’s daily operations, as well as the football and baseball programs under legendary coaches Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier and Ray Tanner, respectively. From 1999 to 2003, Eichorst served as the Director of Athletics at Wisconsin-Whitewater, which produced four top 10-percent finishes in the NACDA Directors Cup, one NCAA team title and two NCAA runner-up finishes. The program also featured 11 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections. A native of Lone Rock, Wis., Eichorst was an all-conference defensive back, three-time letterwinner and 1990 football team captain for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He graduated magna cum laude in business from UW-Whitewater in 1990 and in 2015 was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement. He earned a law degree from Marquette Law School in 1995, practiced law in Milwaukee until 1999 and is a past member of the State Bar of Wisconsin Board of Governors. He served as an assistant adjunct professor of law at Marquette, where he taught classes in sports law. He serves on the Marquette University National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors and in 2006, Marquette awarded Eichorst the Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award. Senior Associate Athletic Director Bob Burton enters his 18th season with the Nebraska athletic department since joining the Husker staff in 1998. Burton reports to the Director of Athletics and serves on Nebraska’s senior management team. He assists in NU’s financial and facilities master plans, providing supervision to the Athletic Business Office, Concessions, Capital Planning and Construction and Information Technology/Computing Service areas. He also oversees complimentary ticket and gift-in-kind approvals and reconciliation. Burton, who serves on the Big Ten Sports Management Council, is the Athletic Department’s contract administrator, including all game/event agreements, and serves as the department’s liaison to the NU General Counsel Office. He also plays a major role in NU’s risk management program, while overseeing the operations of Nebraska’s camps and clinics. Burton acts as the department’s liaison to Haymarket Park. Working with the Lincoln Saltdogs, he helps set the budget for field and stadium operation costs and create strategic plans for the facility. Burton is Nebraska’s sport administrator for wrestling, bowling, men’s and women’s track and field and cross country. Burton joined the athletic department in 1998 as an associate athletic director for compliance/ sports administration. He served in that role until 2007, ensuring that the conduct and operations of Nebraska’s athletic teams were in compliance with NCAA, Big 12 and institutional rules and regulations. He also performed as the primary sports administrator for many of Nebraska’s teams. Burton filled a similar position at Oklahoma State as
the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sports programs as well as the training and strength and conditioning, wrestling, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s tennis programs. Burton came to Nebraska from Texas Tech, where he served as an associate athletic director for compliance for one year. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyzed the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department. Burton, who was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer committee for three years and was a member of the NCAA Division I bowling committee, served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in the development of legislation, interpretation of regulations and reviewed legal issues related to the application of the association’s regulations. He served as an NCAA liaison to committees and conducted comprehensive education to several intercollegiate athletic conferences. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the Nebraska College of Law in 1989. A native of Falls City, Neb., Burton and his wife, Krista, have a daughter, Elly Kathryn, and sons Robert Falk, McClain John and Abram Lawslo.

A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon serves as Executive Associate Athletic Director for Administration and is a member of NU’s senior management team. She is Nebraska’s Senior Woman Administrator to the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference and serves on the Big Ten Sports Management Council. Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office. She also oversees the areas of Department Travel, including bowl and postseason travel, the Department’s Gender Equity Plan, equipment and serves as a liaison to adidas.
In addition, Logsdon manages student-athlete end of season evaluations and exit interviews. She also serves as the sport administrator for volleyball, beach volleyball, softball and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Previously, Logsdon spent 23 seasons in football operations, including six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations. Logsdon earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska.

She is a true leader and an extraordinarily fine player.” – Head Coach Bill Straub After emerging as one of Nebraska’s top performers in her first three seasons, Gazmine Mason (pronounced JAZZ-min) looks to provide leadership as one of three seniors on a Husker team trying to reclaim the NCAA title in 2016-17. A two-time NTCA All-American, Mason is firmly entrenched in a top-three roster spot. Following her junior season, Mason competed for Junior Team USA in multiple international events, highlighted by her performance at the World Bowling Youth Championships at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. Mason took home singles and all-events gold medals, and won silver in the doubles and team of four competition. She also earned bronze in the masters competition at the tournament.
finished 10th overall with an average of 212.7 to help the Huskers to a second-place finish. She was also a member of the NCAA all-tournament team. Mason was at her best at the Crusader Classic where she earned MVP honors with a score of 223.8, helping the Huskers to a third-place finish. Mason posted averages above 208 at the Big Red Invitational and the TRACK Kat Klash, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. She was also strong at the Warhawk Invitational, contributing a 205.6 average to help the Huskers to the team title. In January, Mason was named a member of Junior Team USA 2016 after finishing 19th overall and seventh among competitors in her age group at the 2016 U.S. Bowling Congress Team USA Trials. Mason earned academic All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season and was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for the third consecutive year.

Mason was a top contributor for the Huskers and one of the best players in the country during her sophomore campaign. She was named a thirdteam NTCA All-American while posting a season average pinfall of 207.8 in 54 games for NU. Mason posted a strong performance at the Big Red Invitational. She tied for sixth on the second day of competition with a 210.2 average. She finished 12th at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, helping the Huskers to a tournament victory with a 218.5 average. At the Central Missouri Women’s Invitational, she was named to the all-tournament team while finishing fifth overall with a 209 average and a high score of 268, helping the Big Red claim the tournament crown. Mason won the individual competition at the loaded 23-team Music City Classic, putting up a dazzling 230 average. She contributed a strong 206.9 average in the NCAA Tournament, helping the Huskers claim their 10th national championship in program history. She continued her strong work off the lanes, as
she was named academic All-Big Ten, while being named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters. She also earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2015. Mason competed at the 2015 Youth Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships in Panama City, Panama, following her sophomore season. She took home a gold medal in singles, while winning four silver medals at the event.

Mason made an instant impact for the Huskers with several exceptional performances during her freshman season, including a team-high 225 in the opening match of the NCAA Championships. She began her collegiate career by helping the Huskers to a team title at the Big Red Invitational at Sun Valley Lanes. She recorded two strikes in the Huskers’ second game of the tournament to contribute to a 2,813 total pinfall. Mason captured NTCA Scholastic All-America honors for her performance in the classroom. She was also a two-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection and was named to the inaugural Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Mason ended her high school career at Cranston East High School in Rhode Island as one of the nation’s top recruits. She rolled a perfect 300 game and added a high series of 786, while winning three state championships (2011, 2012, 2013). Her 225 average as a senior was the best in the state of Rhode Island. Mason also won the Rhode Island Pepsi state title in 2012. She was a standout in the classroom as well, earning a spot in the National Honor Society with high honors.

Zabierek played a key role in Nebraska’s run to a fifth NCAA title in 2015, participating in every regular-season tournament for the Huskers. She contributed a season average pinfall of 195.5 in 43 games. She was at her best during Nebraska’s home tournament, the Big Red Invitational, rolling a 202 average in five games. She helped the Huskers take second in the 17-team Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Classic, producing a 201.5 average in six games. An honorable-mention NTCA Scholastic AllAmerican, Zabierek added academic All-Big Ten honors in 2015. She also earned a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award and claimed a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as a sophomore. Zabierek helped lead the Huskers to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships by delivering several outstanding performances. In her first game of the tournament, she erupted for a 255 to power the Huskers to a victory over Sam Houston State in the second qualifying round. She produced a team-leading 222 total
pinfall in her second game against WisconsinWhitewater. She rolled a 213 in a win over UW-Whitewater in the second game at the Big Red Invitational, helping Nebraska to the team title. Zabierek finished 14th individually with a 1,040 pinfall at the Mid-Winter Classic. She starred in the classroom, claiming NTCA Scholastic All-America accolades in 2014. She earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters, and she was named to the inaugural Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her work in the community in 2014.

Zabierek joined the Nebraska bowling team after compiling a tremendous high school career at Lockport Township East in Lockport, Ill. Zabierek posted a high series score of 747, earning two top-20 state finishes in high school. She placed 14th in 2012 and 23rd in 2013, while also recording a school-record 211 average. Zabierek was also an honor roll student all four years of high school.

She earned a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award and a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2015. Zabierek took a step forward during the second half of her junior season, becoming the leadoff bowler in Nebraska’s five-woman rotation and earning honorable-mention NTCA All-America accolades along the way. Zabierek posted a 203.6 average on the season and helped lead Nebraska to an NCAA runner-up finish. She competed in each of NU’s 10 events in 2015-16. She earned the first two top-five finishes of her career in back-to-back weeks in February, finishing fifth at the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic and third at the Warhawk Invitational. After providing clutch relief performances in her first two seasons as a Husker, Belzeski hopes to compete for a top-five roster spot as a junior. A standout off the lanes, Belzeski earned NTCA Scholastic All-America and academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore, in addition to earning a prestigious Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. Belzeski saw extended action for the first time in her Husker career as a sophomore,
participating in nine of Nebraska’s 10 events in 2015-16. The Schererville, Ind., native averaged a 199.2 for the season, helping the Huskers to a second-place national finish. At the Crusader Classic in November, Belzeski posted an average of 203.3 to help the Huskers to a third-place finish. She was at her best at the TRACK Kat Klash in early December, averaging a 205.5 to help the Huskers to the tournament victory. Belzeski continued her strong work off the lanes as a sophomore, claiming a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. A two-time NTCA All-American and Scholastic-All American, Bond is also a standout off the lanes, as a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. She earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016, and was also named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in each of her first four semesters as a Husker. Bond competed for Junior Team USA in the summer following her sophomore season. She earned silver medals in the doubles and team competitions in addition to a bronze medal in singles at the World Bowling Youth Championships at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln.

Bond finished in first place individually at the NCAA Championship with an average of 228.4, earning a spot on the all-tournament team and helping the Huskers to a second-place national finish. As a sophomore, the Aurora, Ill., native posted six top-10 finishes in Nebraska’s 10 events. She averaged over 200 in eight events on the year as well. She was at her best at the Warhawk Invitational in February when she finished second individually with an average of 229, helping the Huskers to the team title. At Nebraska’s own Big Red Invitational, Bond finished second overall with a 223.4 average. In early January, Bond was named a member of Junior Team USA 2016 following her performance at the 2015 Junior Gold Championships. The top-rated high school bowler in the country during her senior season, Bond came to Nebraska to compete to win a championship, which is exactly what she did in her first season as a Husker. She was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Bowler after Nebraska’s fifth NCAA championship. She was a constant force in the NU starting lineup in 2015, as the always-clutch Bond was the fourth bowler in the five-personrotation. For her efforts, Bond was named a third-team NTCA All-American while also earning a spot on
the NCAA All-Tournament team. In five of Nebraska’s eight tournaments, Bond scored at least a 200 average. She was at her best at the Mid-Winter Classic where she won the individual competition with a staggering 223.4 average. At the Big Red Invitational, Bond was a leader for the Huskers during all three days of competition. She compiled a 211.2 average throughout the competition, placing her sixth in the individual standings. A standout in the classroom, Bond earned NTCA Scholastic All-America honors in 2015, while claiming spots on the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters. Bond was also recognized for her outstanding work in the community, capturing a place on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. Bond competed for Junior Team USA in the summer after her freshman season. She won five gold medals at the Tournament of the Americas in addition to gaining experience in multiple other international competitions.

Bond joined the Nebraska bowling team after being ranked as the top high school female bowler in the United States. Bond rolled two 300 games and an 805 series during her career at Waubonsie Valley High School. Straub ended her career at Lincoln Pius X High School as a two-time state champion for Coach Rod Machacek. She earned all-state and all-conference honors all four years of her high school career, being named conference MVP in 2015. She was a state champion in 2012 and 2015, while finishing as a state runner-up in 2013. Straub bowled a high game of 280 and a high series of 735. She was also a highly rated volleyball recruit, earning two letters in high school, before an injury ended her volleyball career. She also lettered in track as a triple jumper. Morris ended her high school career at Ann Arbor Huron as one of the nation’s top recruits. She was an MHSAA individual state champion in 2012 and 2015 for Coaches Marti Marshall and Juan Matthews. She bowled two perfect 300 games and was a member of the all-state first team in 2012, 2014 and 2015. She was named Detroit Free-Press 2015 “Miss Bowling” and she was the 2014 and 2015 Ann Arbor News Girls High School Bowler of the Year. She also played field hockey in high school, and was a member of the 2013 MHSFHA state championship team. Morris was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with honors.

Orozco competed for her country this summer as a member of Junior Team Mexico, and saw

Orozco has been a member of Junior Team Mexico for five years and is a six-time national champion. She also won multiple medals representing her country internationally, including a gold medal in trios at the 2015 Youth Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships in Panama City, Panama. After advancing to the NCAA Championship match for an NCAA-record fourth consecutive year, the Nebraska bowling team wrapped up a successful season by finishing second in the nation in 2015-16. The Cornhuskers were victorious in four tournaments on the season, and performances by three All-Americans paved the way for NU’s second-place national finish. Nebraska fell just shy of becoming the third NCAA bowling team to win back-to-back NCAA championships. After breezing through the opening round and the bracket rounds, Nebraska dropped the final to Stephen F. Austin in a sevengame thriller, 4-3. The Ladyjacks exacted revenge on the Huskers after NU defeated SFA to win the 2015 NCAA championship. Following the result, Nebraska has finished first or second in eight of the 13 NCAA-sponsored women’s bowling championships. “It was a very productive year,” head coach
Bill Straub said. “Any year that we’re in the final round for the title is a good one. I think the girls performed really well. Unfortunately, they lost in the last game. It certainly wasn’t because of bad play, it just didn’t work out. It certainly was a very productive year, and I’m very proud of them.” Julia Bond earned first-team NTCA All-America honors for the first time after she led the Huskers with a season average of 210. The sophomore from Aurora, Ill., finished in first place at two tournaments and added top-five finishes in four more. She was also named an NTCA Scholastic All-American and earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016. Gazmine Mason was named a third-team NTCA All-American for the second season in a row after posting a 204.4 average as a junior. The Cranston, R.I., native finished first in one tournament and posted two other top-five finishes. Mason also earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016.

A strong second half of the season propelled Briana Zabierek to honorable-mention NTCA AllAmerica honors. She posted back-to-back top-five finishes in addition to three more top-10 finishes as a junior. The Lockport, Ill., native was named an NTCA Scholastic All-American and earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016. Seniors Melanie Crawford and Bethany Hedley wrapped up impressive careers in 2016, as each was a consistent contributor to the Nebraska rotation all season long. Hedley contributed a pair of top-10 finishes while Crawford posted one top-five and three top-10 finishes, as both finished with season averages above 200. The two seniors were both named NTCA Scholastic All-Americans and earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016. “We were very fortunate to have both players throughout their careers,” Straub said. “Melanie was a transfer in after she spent two years at Stephen F. Austin. She got one second and a first-place team finish while she was here, a really productive career. Bethany had two firsts and two seconds (team finishes) in her four years here. She just came in, won twice, finished second twice, and it would have been very hard to get that accomplished if she wasn’t here.” In all, eight Cornhuskers earned NTCA Scholastic All-America honors and the Big Red placed six on the academic All-Big Ten team. Husker bowlers also claimed 20 spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll across the fall and spring semesters and 11 spots on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016. NEBRASKA Bowling Invitational in Kenner, La. Zabierek led the way with an average of 199.3, good for 15th individually. NU also finished third at the Crusader Classic in early November, as Mason won MVP honors with a 223.8 average. The Huskers returned home to the annual Big Red Invitational and put forth a strong showing leading to a first-place overall finish at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. As each day was its own tournament, the Huskers won the traditional competitions on Day 2 and Day 3. Bond and Mason were named to the all-tournament team, as Bond finished second overall with an average of 223.4, while Mason finished fourth with a 208.3 average. Nebraska continued its winning ways at the TRACK Kat Klash, winning the tournament hosted by Sam Houston State for the second-consecutive season. The Huskers defeated the host Bearkats in seven games in the championship match. Bond finished third overall with a 214.4 average, while Mason finished fifth with an average of 208.6. The Huskers got off to a rough start in the 2016 calendar year, finishing seventh in the Mid-Winter Invitational in January. Zabierek led the Huskers with a 209.8 average, which was good for 10th overall. NU quickly shook off that result, winning the championship at the Prairie View A&M Invitational two weeks later. The Huskers took down topranked Arkansas State in the final, which went seven games. Bond led the way for the Big Red, finishing fifth overall with an average of 220. The Huskers finished third overall at the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic in Houston, wrapping up another successful weekend. Crawford, a Texas native, finished fourth overall with a sizzling average of 217.8 to lead Nebraska, while Zabierek finished fifth with an average of 217.2. Another tournament victory followed at the Warhawk Invitational, as NU posted the eighth-

highest pinfall average in school history with a score of 1,072.6 in five team games. The Huskers swept past Central Missouri in the championship match, one of four victories over the Jennies on the weekend. Individually, Bond finished second overall with an average of 229, while Zabierek finished third with a 225.2 average. Freshman Meghan Straub finished sixth overall with an average of 213.2. A strong performance gave way to a third-place finish at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic to close the regular season. The tournament featured 30 teams, including 23 of the top 25 teams in the country. Crawford led the way for the Big Red with an average of 203.7, good for 11th overall. After continuing its streak of qualifying for every NCAA Championship since bowling became an NCAA-sponsored sport during the 2003-04 season, Nebraska used strong performances in the opening round to position itself well heading into the bracket round. Bond finished first individually in the qualifying round, posting an average of 228.4 which earned her a spot on the alltournament team. Zabierek finished seventh with an average of 213.9 and Hedley finished eighth with an average of 213. The third seed in bracket play, the Huskers used victories over Central Missouri, North Carolina A&T and McKendree to set up a rematch of the 2015 NCAA Final. In the championship match, the two teams split the first four games. After the Ladyjacks won game five, the Huskers used a dominating game with their backs against the wall in game six to force a game seven. In the decisive game seven, Stephen F. Austin hit six strikes in a row to open the game and took the game, 247-192, and the match, 4-3. The Huskers left just one frame open, but hit only three strikes in the final game. The Huskers posted a final season record of 9733 with a 1,014 average in team games and 198.9 in Baker games.

NEBRASKA BOWLING HISTORY In its 19 years as a varsity sport, Nebraska has become one of the top programs in the nation. Nebraska Coach Bill Straub has guided the Huskers to unprecedented success, winning 10 national championships, including five NCAA titles since capturing the inaugural crown in 2004. Once bowling became an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 2003, the Huskers won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 and captured another in 2009. The Huskers again added to their trophy case in 2013. After a runner-up finish in 2014, the Huskers stormed to their nation-leading fifth NCAA crown in 2015, behind National Tenpin Coaches Association Player of the Year Lizabeth Kuhlkin and NCAA Championship Most Valuable Bowler Julia Bond. With 94 tournament titles in 187 competitions through the 2015-16 campaign including national championship tournaments, Straub has created a dynamic foundation for success for Nebraska bowling. With a world-wide approach to recruiting, Nebraska bowlers have been well-represented in national and international competitions. Under Straub, 12 Husker bowlers have qualified for their national teams, including U.S. National Team members Shannon Pluhowsky, Diandra Asbaty (Hyman), Brenda Edwards, Elise Bolton and most-recently Lizabeth Kuhlkin. Recent Huskers Danielle van der Meer (Netherlands), Valerie Calberry (Canada), Shalima Zalsha (Indonesia), Tan Yan Ling (Singapore), Andrea Ruiz (Colombia), Bethany Hedley (England) and current Husker Alexandra Mosquera (Colombia) have also represented their home countries on the international level. While the Husker team accomplishments have been paramount, numerous bowlers have also enjoyed individual success. NU has had at least one All-American in each of the last 24 years, dating back to the bowling club program days. Since 1989, 29 Huskers have combined for a total of 61 All-America awards, while Kim Berke (1992), Diandra Hyman (2000), Shannon Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Amanda Burgoyne (2007), Cassandra Leuthold (2010) and Lizabeth Kuhlkin (2015) were each chosen as the National Collegiate Bowler of the Year. Straub has been a visionary in the sport of college bowling, championing the sport through its club program days and was a natural to become Nebraska’s first varsity head coach in 1997. The first year was historic in several respects, but most important was granting of the first full scholarship in the sport’s history to Jennifer Daugherty, who went on to earn first-team All-America honors in both 1998 and 1999. College bowling has experienced rapid growth in recent seasons, with over 70 schools set to compete in the 2016-17 season. In 2002, the NCAA announced that bowling would become an NCAA-sanctioned sport, and legislation was approved on April 24, 2003, allowing for the first NCAA Championship in the spring of 2004. Since the NCAA Championship was initiated, NU has captured the title five times in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015 giving NU 10 national crowns in the sport. Most recently, the Nebraska bowling team was crowned the 2015 NCAA champions at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin, 4-2, for the crown. Bond was named the Most Valuable Bowler at the NCAA Championships, while Kuhlkin joined Bond on the alltournament team.
Lizabeth Kuhlkin was the 2015 NTCA Collegiate Bowler of the Year and won three NTCA All-America honors, in addition to leading Nebraska to two national championships.

NEBRASKA BOWLING The Nebraska Bowling Facility in the East Campus Union is home to the Nebraska bowling team. The six-lane facility provides the Huskers with a tournament-quality practice facility and is one of the best in the nation. The bowling team also enjoys Husker Power, with weight rooms in Memorial Stadium, the NU Coliseum and the Hendricks Training Complex. Nebraska’s excellent practice facilities have played an integral role in the Huskers capturing five national team championships over the past 13 seasons. The Huskers also played host to the 2008 NCAA Championships at Thunder Alley in Omaha. Overall, the Nebraska women’s bowling team has claimed 10 national titles (five NCAA, five IBC) under Coach Bill Straub since 1990, including the 2015 NCAA crown.

GROWING CHAMPIONS Nebraska has established one of the richest traditions in collegiate women’s bowling over the past two decades. Coach Bill Straub led Nebraska to four national championships during the 1990s, before adding another championship in 2001. The Huskers took their championship success to another level by winning the first-ever NCAA title in the sport in 2004. Nebraska made it backto-back NCAA Championships with a title in 2005, before claiming another crown in 2009. The Huskers added to their historic hardware haul in 2013, before capturing the 2015 title to give the program its fifth crown in the first 12 years of the NCAA Championships. Nebraska bowlers have been well-represented in national and international competitions. Under Coach Bill Straub, 12 Husker bowlers have qualified for their national teams, including U.S. National Team members Shannon Pluhowsky, Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty, Brenda Edwards, Elise Bolton and Lizabeth Kuhlkin. Recent Huskers Danielle van der Meer (Netherlands), Valerie Calberry (Canada), Shalima Zalsha (Indonesia), Bethany Hedley (England), Tan Yan Ling (Singapore), Andrea Ruiz (Colombia) and current Husker Alexandra Mosquera (Colombia) have also represented their home countries on the international level.

From Memorial Stadium to Pinnacle Bank Arena and the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Husker student-athletes have the benefits of training and competing in some of the nation’s finest facilities. Fans around the country follow the Huskers with amazing passion across all sports. In 201516, Nebraska finished second in the nation in attendance across its seven primary team sports, attracting more than 1.3 million fans to its home stadiums and arenas. The Nebraska volleyball team captured its fourth NCAA title with a win over Texas in the championship match at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha on Dec. 19, 2015. Five Husker volleyball players, including NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Mikaela Foecke, earned All-America honors in 2015. Volleyball’s championship was the first of seven top-10 NCAA team finishes for Husker programs in 2015-16.
Ryan Boldt helped the Huskers advance to the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American was chosen in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tierra Williams earned a trio of All-America awards in 2016. She finished fifth in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She also swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor titles in the triple and long jumps.
Nick Percy captured the 2016 NCAA discus crown. The twotime All-American from Ventnor, England, also won the Big Ten discus title to help the Husker men sweep the Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships.
MJ Knighten claimed first-team All-America honors at third base while helping the Nebraska softball team advance to the 2016 NCAA Regional final. Knighten hit .376 with 21 homers and 60 RBIs in 55 games.
Julia Bond earned first-team AllAmerica honors by leading the Nebraska bowling team to an NCAA runner-up finish in 2016. Bond was the Most Outstanding Bowler in powering NU to the 2015 NCAA team title.

The Nebraska men’s track and field team swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor titles, giving the Big Red their first sweep since 2004. A total of 19 Huskers combined for 24 All-America awards in men’s and women’s track and field in 2016.

Nebraska was the only NCAA Division I program to rank in the top 15 nationally in attendance in football and men’s basketball in 2015-16. In fact, Nebraska ranked in the top 15 in attendance across 10 sports and drew well over 1.3 million fans in 2015-16.

ATHLETIC MEDICINE Providing expert care to more than 600 Husker student-athletes, Nebraska features one of the most well-trained and highly skilled athletic medicine staffs in the country. Under the guidance of Director of Athletic Medicine Dr. Lonnie Albers, Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Jerry Weber, the 2016-17 Nebraska athletic medicine staff consists of five doctors, 14 full-time athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers, two fulltime in-house athletic psychologists and sports psychiatry consultants who work directly with student-athletes. Nebraska’s medical facilities have long been among the nation’s best, and NU’s athletic medicine center within the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex will keep the Huskers on the front line of technology for decades to come. In addition to Nebraska’s North Stadium facility, Haymarket Park, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Pinnacle Bank Arena and the Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex all feature athletic medicine areas. The Devaney Center’s Athletic Medicine facility underwent an extensive expansion as part of the Hendricks Training Complex addition in 2011.

Nebraska’s Athletic Medicine Center features a hydrotherapy area that includes a three-level laned pool. The Hydroworx 1000 Treadmill Pool is equipped with two cameras underwater for evaluation and assessment.
The hot and cold plunge tanks in the Holthus Family Hydrotherapy area help the Huskers recover after workouts and injuries.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-America awards to 325, adding five Huskers in 2015-16. Senior guard Shavon Shields (Olathe, Kan., Biological Sciences) earned his second consecutive first-team Academic All-America award in men’s basketball before being named Nebraska’s Male StudentAthlete of the Year. Shields (pictured right with Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst) was also a member of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his outstanding community service. He was joined by Nebraska Female Student-Athlete-ofthe-Year Mattie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz., Finance) as a first-team Academic All-American in 201516. Fowler (pictured below) was the President of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Board in 2014-15. She and Shields were Nebraska’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in 2015-16. The Nebraska men’s track and field team continued its extraordinary run of CoSIDA Academic All-America success with three-time first-team honoree Levi Gipson (Lincoln, Neb., Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science) and fellow first-team award winner Cody Rush (Grand Island, Neb., Nutrition Science). Rush, who earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2014, joined baseball outfielder Ryan Boldt (Red Wing, Minn., Nutrition Science) as a two-time honoree. Boldt also earned thirdteam recognition in 2015. Graduation is the ultimate achievement, and 109 Husker student-athletes earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in three commencement exercises at Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2015-16.
A total of 109 Nebraska student-athletes earned their degrees in 2015-16, including 62 in May 2016, 39 in December 2015 and eight in August 2015. Lizabeth Kuhlkin (above left) earned her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in May of 2015 after leading the Huskers to the NCAA title as the NTCA Bowler of the Year. Rush was also an 11-time All-American.

In 2015-16, 109 Huskers earned their college degrees including senior track and field standout Levi Gipson. Gipson became just the second three-time first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American across all sports at Nebraska, while adding prestigious NCAA and Big Ten Postgraduate scholarships worth a total of $15,000. Gipson was also a seven-time All-American.
Junior outfielder Ryan Boldt earned his second CoSIDA Academic All-America award in 2016, after helping the Nebraska baseball team to the NCAA Tournament. Boldt, who was a member of the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, was a secondround pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.

Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).
ACADEMIC COUNSELING
Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.
TUTORIAL SUPPORT
A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.
STUDY HALL
Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Additional performancebased or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.
MENTORING
Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION
Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.
PERSONAL COUNSELING
Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.
COMPUTER RESOURCES
The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs for student-athletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska. STUDENT-ATHLETE LIFE In May of 2016, 20 Husker studentathletes, a Nebraska letterwinner alum and and four staff members participated in a service trip abroad to the Dominican Republic. The Huskers spent time with members of the community of Las Pajas to create a local sports court and create a mural at a community center. Included on the trip were Husker bowlers Melanie Crawford and Alexandra Mosquera.
In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to student-athletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. • Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities. • Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics. • Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every student-athlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school.

Lizabeth Kuhlkin captured National Tenpin Coaches Association Bowler-of-the-Year honors while leading Nebraska to the 2015 NCAA championship. Following her magical senior season, Kuhlkin was named Nebraska’s firstever Female Athlete of the Year across all sports.
LIFE SKILLS AWARDS
Melanie Crawford captured a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award as a senior in 2016. The award is presented to NU’s most committed student-athletes to community service across all sports. The senior from Plano, Texas, was a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and an NTCA Scholastic All-American in 2016.

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD SERVICE TO A MUCH LARGER COMMUNITY
The Nebraska Life Skills program offered its second service trip abroad in 2016, taking 20 student-athletes to the Dominican Republic to help the community of Las Pajas. Regarded as the premier and most comprehensive Life Skills program in college athletics, the Husker program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support throughout college and beyond, promoting total person development and preparation for life after sports. Five full-time staff members coordinate a wide array of services benefiting Husker studentathletes.
PROACTIVE EDUCATION
The Life Skills team organizes several orientations aimed at acclimating student-athletes to college life. Additionally, all incoming student-athletes attend the fall semester Husker Life Seminar. This interactive class promotes responsible decisionmaking, personal brand, financial literacy, leadership, involvement and service.
INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS
Every Nebraska student-athlete is assigned a Life Skills Coordinator who arranges individual meetings during the academic year to enhance personal and career development. The meetings help studentathletes identify a career focus and implement a plan to increase career marketability.
CAREER COMMITMENT ORKING
Annually, Nebraska Life Skills organizes a StudentAthlete Career, Networking Night and other career events aimed at connecting Huskers with companies desiring competitive, hard-working, accountable candidates. Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career opportunities across the country.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Nebraska student-athletes readily accept the role-model challenge, giving more than 2,500 hours annually to impact 25,000 across Nebraska. Outreach events include hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies (including the Sportsmanship 4 Life Pep Rally, Make-A-Wish, NFL Play 60 and Husker Heroes.
LEADERSHIP
Nebraska Life Skills provides student-athletes with opportunities to enhance leadership skills while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Student-athletes can participate in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes or Husker Distinction Council. UNL offers more than 600 recognized student organizations allowing athletes to collaborate with campus leaders for common goals. Nebraska Life Skills funds and coordinates an annual one-week service abroad trip that allows 20 student-athletes to work toward a common goal while enriching cultural competencies.
RECOGNITION
In 2015-16, a record 347 Husker student-athletes were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for completing a minimum of six service projects in the calendar year. A host of other recognition opportunities at the institutional, Big Ten and NCAA levels that all reflect the high ideals, character and servant leadership nurtured through community involvement also are available.

The Nebraska bowling team is committed to succeeding in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Huskers Bethany Hedley (left) and Briana Zabierek (right) were honored in all areas throughout their careers. Hedley, a 2016 senior from Watford, England, helped the Huskers to a pair of NCAA titles and was an NTCA Scholastic AllAmerican. A three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, Hedley was also a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner in 2016. Zabierek, a 2017 senior from Lockport, Ill., is a returning NTCA All-American on the lanes and in the classroom. She is also a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and a recipient of a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2015.

Effective December 2015 and beyond, studentathletes who letter and graduate have a three-year window to benefit from one of three post-eligibility opportunities ($7,500 each). Upon completion of required seminars, graduates can either study abroad, complete an internship or begin graduate school within the University of Nebraska system.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
The Life Skills program is responsible for all Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for Husker Athletics. The first Diversity and Inclusion Summit occurred in January of 2016 and reached all student-athletes and staff with a message of acceptance and unity.
