A Tradition of Success

Coach Robin Krapfl continues to emphasize the principles of achieving excellence on and off the course in her 25th season as Nebraska's head coach. It shows. Since Krapfl took the reins in 1987, the Huskers have: Earned a nation-leading 59 NGCA Scholastic All-America honors. In 1992, all five of Krapfl’s starters were honored with this distinction. It was the first time in women’s college golf history that a team had accomplished such a feat. Again in 2003, five Nebraska starters earned Scholastic All-America honors. Won 95 academic all-conference awards.  Produced two NCAA All-Americans, two conference champions, the 1990 Edith Munson Award winner, a twotime TrueTemper Scholastic Award honoree, one Big 12 Golfer of the Year, one Nebraska Student-Athlete-of-the-Year and 22 all-conference (16 Big Eight, 6 All-Big 12) awards. Qualified for 11 NCAA Regionals. Participated in the first three NCAA Tournaments in school history with trips in 2000, 2003 and 2006. Consistently finished near the top of the Big 12 standings since 1996. Posted a team GPA of 3.71 in 2006-07, the fifth-highest team GPA in the nation. Despite the past success of NU's program, Krapfl believes the best is yet to come.

Huskers Take Aim at 12th NCAA Regional

Nebraska had its streak of three consecutive NCAA Regional bids end in 2008-09, but the Huskers will focus on earning their 12th regional bid since 1994 in 2011-12. NU advanced to its third consecutive regional in 2008, qualifying as the No. 17 seed in the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas. The Huskers missed a berth to the fourth NCAA Championships in school history by just one stroke, finishing in a tie for 10th with a score of 903 on the University of Texas Golf Course. NU qualified for regionals on the heels of a solid sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla. Along with their strong play on the course, all five starters in Nebraska’s lineup earned academic All-Big 12 recognition. In 2006-07, NU earned a second straight NCAA Regional bid with a fourth-place Big 12 finish. NU claimed three team tournament titles, led by All-Big 12 performer Elli Brown. NU also led the conference with five academic All-Big 12 selections. The Huskers produced one of the best seasons in school history in 2005-06, with a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Nebraska also posted its best-ever score at the NCAA Championships by firing a 1,221 over four rounds, 18 strokes better than the 1,239 NU shot at

the 2000 NCAA Championships. The final-round 299 was NU’s best NCAA Championships mark in history. The 2005-06 Huskers finished eighth at the NCAA Central Regional after entering as the No. 15 seed in the 21-team field. The Huskers also tied for fourth at the Big 12 Championships at the Country Club of Lincoln. NU also produced the best team stroke average in school history (304.88). Stephanie Ruiz earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and finished in a tie for 38th at the 2006 NCAA Championships. In 2003, the Huskers played host to the NCAA Central Regional, held at Lincoln's Firethorn Golf Club. Nebraska was ranked 19th going into the tournament, but ascended to fifth place to qualify for the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskers closed the season strong by finishing 22nd at the NCAA Championships. NU finished with a four-round total of 1,281 led by Sarah Sasse’s 40th-place showing. Krapfl, a native of West Point, Neb., has been associated with the Husker program since 1979 when she played collegiate golf for Nebraska (1979-82). A three-year letterwinner, she graduated from Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1984. Krapfl went on to become a PGA Professional at The Country Club of Lincoln, where she worked as an assistant under head professional and former Husker coach Jerry Fisher. Krapfl also worked under Fisher as an assistant for the Huskers from 1984 to 1987. As head coach, Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 28 tournament titles. She is only the third coach in Nebraska women's golf history, following former men's coach Larry Romjue and Fisher. She is married to Richard Krapfl and the couple has two sons, Robert, born on Oct. 30, 1992, and Ryan, born Aug. 20, 1994.

Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past four seasons. With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program as a whole, Osborne has made historic decisions to help the University of Nebraska athletic programs for years to come. In June of 2010, Osborne joined Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany to announce the Huskers would join the Big Ten beginning on July 1, 2011. Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten is expected to add University-wide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come. Just a few months later, Osborne announced an aggressive expansion plan for the east side of Memorial Stadium that will increase attendance past 90,000 for the first time, while continuing Nebraska’s NCAA record-setting sellout streak. The expansion, which is set for completion before the 2013 football season, will include athletic and academic research components. In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on a 16,000-seat downtown arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14. The basketball programs, the wrestling program and many of NU’s other sports will also benefit from the Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The facility, which is set to open in October of 2011, will include new practice and team areas, in addition to expanded athletic medicine and strength training areas. The Nebraska baseball and softball programs will also benefit from a new indoor practice facility at Haymarket Park, which is scheduled to open in September of 2011. The first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s facilities began in the summer of 2010, as the Huskers

Hastings College (1959)

broke ground on the Student Life Complex on the west side of Memorial Stadium. The Student Life Complex, which opened in the fall of 2010, directly benefits every Husker student-athlete with expanded academic resources. While Osborne has helped initiate landmark moves off the field, he has continued to help coaches and student-athletes focus on Nebraska’s tradition of success in competition. In fact, the Huskers have enjoyed renewed success in Osborne’s first four years as athletic director. In 2010-11, eight Husker teams finished among the top 20 in the nation, while 15 NU squads advanced to postseason play in their respective sports, including the Husker football team’s second straight Holiday Bowl appearance. One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini, who had spent the 2003 campaign as NU’s defensive coordinator, has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with back-to-back 10-win seasons and a trio of Big 12 North Division titles in his first three years. In 2009 and 2010, Pelini’s Huskers finished among the top 20 teams in the nation in the final polls. The tradition-rich NU volleyball program has claimed three Big 12 titles and advanced to three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, while the women’s basketball program has earned two NCAA Tournament trips, while notching the best season in school history with a 2010 Big 12 title and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. The NU wrestling program shared the 2009 Big 12 title and finished in the top 16 at four straight NCAA Championships. The NU men’s and women’s track and field teams combined for three conference crowns, while producing seven top-20 finishes indoors and outdoors over the past four years. The men’s and women’s gymnastics teams have produced top-10 NCAA finishes the past two years, including a schoolrecord-tying fourth-place showing by the women in 2011. The Husker bowling team won the 2009 NCAA title and has finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships each of the past four years. The NU rifle team has produced a pair of top-six NCAA finishes in the last four years, while the men’s and women’s tennis teams both earned NCAA Tournament trips in 2010 and 2011. The 2010 NCAA first-round victory for the women was the first in school history, while the men’s appearance in 2010 was the first in school history. The Husker softball team has made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, while the Husker women’s golf and baseball programs both earned NCAA Regional bids in 2008. Osborne made his second coaching hire since his return to Nebraska, when he named two-time Major League All-Star, three-time Gold Glove award winner, and former No. 1 MLB Draft pick Darin Erstad as the baseball team’s new coach on June 2, 2011. Erstad was not only one of the best Husker baseball players in history, he was the starting punter on NU’s 1994 national championship football team coached by Osborne. While the Huskers have continued to make advancements in competition and in recruiting under Osborne’s guidance, they have continued to set the bar high academically. Nebraska led the Big 12 with 14 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2010-11, increasing its nation-leading total to 291 CoSIDA Academic All-

INAUGURAL BIG TEN CONFERENCE SEASON

Americans all-time, across all sports. The Huskers also led the Big 12 with a league-record 192 academic all-conference selections, along with a conference-record 688 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections. NU graduated 113 student-athletes from August of 2010 through May of 2011. Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to Nebraska as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006. He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991. TeamMates provides encouragement to school-aged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season. In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998. Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons. Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games. In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history. Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska’s Athletic Director from 1967 to 1993. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren.

Bob BURTON

Executive Associate A.D. Ninth Season Kansas State (1984)

Associate A.D. 14th Season Nebraska (1985)

A member of the Nebraska Athletics senior administration since May 2003, Marc Boehm (pronounced BAME) serves as executive associate athletic director and is the top assistant to the athletic director. Boehm fulfills the director’s responsibilities in his absence and also serves as the department’s chief operating officer. Boehm oversees the efforts of several areas within athletics, including marketing, media relations, HuskerVision, facilities and events. Boehm also oversees the Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs and the Husker soccer program. He also played a major role in the athletic department’s negotiations for its contract extension with IMG College Sports. To date, it is the largest multi-media rights contract in college athletics. As the primary administrator for the NU basketball programs, Boehm played an integral role in the hiring of Doc Sadler to be the Huskers’ new coach on Aug. 8, 2006. Sadler had the Huskers on the brink of the postseason in the final weeks of the campaign and then signed a recruiting class ranked among the top 15 in the nation by several services. Boehm has worked tirelessly with Nebraska’s media partners to provide the men’s basketball team with extensive television package in recent years. His efforts in providing a fan-friendly atmosphere at the Bob Devaney Sports Center have helped Nebraska to recordsetting attendance for women’s basketball at the Devaney Center. Under Boehm’s supervision, Coach Connie Yori’s women’s basketball team enjoyed the best season in school history in 2009-10. The Huskers made their seventh straight postseason trip, advancing to the school’s first NCAA Sweet 16. Yori captured 2010 National Coach-ofthe-Year honors by leading the Huskers to a Big 12 record-tying 30-game winning streak and the 2010 Big 12 regular-season title. NU ranked in the top 10 in the final national polls and seventh nationally in home attendance with 7,390 fans per game. In conference play, NU led the league with 11,383 fans per game. The men have added four postseason trips during Boehm’s tenure, including a trip to the 2011 Postseason NIT. Boehm has also played an integral role in the planning of Nebraska’s new downtown arena for men’s and women’s basketball, which is scheduled to open for the 2013-14 season. He has also worked to help develop Nebraska’s new practice facility - the Hendricks Training Complex - which is set to open at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in the fall of 2011. Boehm has also played a part in helping the Nebraska athletic department make a functional transition to the Big Ten Conference in 2011-12. Boehm was instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the Husker Nation Pavilion, which quickly became the premier pregame event around home football games. Boehm also took the lead role in obtaining First National Bank and Ameritas as premier sponsors for the Nebraska Athletic Department for a combined deal worth more than $7 million over a three-year period. First National Bank and Ameritas joined ALLTEL, Pepsi and adidas as premier corporate sponsors for Husker athletics. Boehm held the same position at Pittsburgh from 1997 to 2003. Boehm assisted in the rise of the Panthers’ basketball program with the men’s team posting back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. During construction of the Panthers’ new athletic facilities, Boehm played a central role in Pitt’s athletic teams moving to the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center. Boehm served as interim athletic director at Pittsburgh for nearly five months before coming to Nebraska. During that time, he hired new men’s (Jamie Dixon) and women’s basketball (Agnus Berenato) and soccer (Sue-Moy Chin) head coaches for the Panther program. Under Dixon’s direction, the Panthers have advanced to eight straight NCAA Tournaments, while Berenato has rejuvenated the women’s program with three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2007 to 2009. Boehm also spent five years as associate executive director of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He directed and managed a 125-member fund-raising committee of Arizona business people responsible for generating more than $4.5 million in cash and in-kind partnerships. Previously he spent four years as associate executive director and public relations director of the Sun Bowl from 1987 to 1991. Born in Grand Island, Boehm earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Kansas State in 1984 and added a master’s degree in sports management from St. Thomas (Fla.) University in 1985. Boehm and his wife, the former Janelle Broderick of Minot, N.D., have three boys, Broderick, Christian and Lukas John.

Associate Athletic Director Bob Burton joined the Nebraska athletic department in 1998. He spent 10 years as associate athletic director for compliance/sports administration from 1998 to 2007. Burton is responsible for the direct administrative supervision to the sports of golf, tennis, men’s gymnastics, track and field, cross country, bowling, wrestling and swimming and diving. He also oversees the operation of Haymarket Park. Working with the Lincoln Saltdogs, he helps set the budget for field and stadium operation costs and create strategic plans for the facility. Burton is a member of the athletic department’s executive team, which helps set policy, develops short- and long-term goals and objectives, and creates strategic plans for the department. Burton also reviews and monitors compliance with all contracts for the athletic department. Burton filled a similar position at Oklahoma State as the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sports programs as well as the training and strength and conditioning, wrestling, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s tennis programs. Burton came to Nebraska from Texas Tech, where he served as an associate athletic director for compliance for one year. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyzed the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department. Burton, who was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer committee for three years and was a member of the NCAA Division I bowling committee, served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in the development of legislation, interpretation of regulations and reviewed legal issues related to the application of the association’s regulations. He served as an NCAA liaison to committees and conducted comprehensive education to several intercollegiate athletic conferences. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the Nebraska College of Law in 1989. A native of Falls City, Neb., Burton and his wife, Krista, have a daughter, Elly, and sons Robert Falk, McClain John and Abram Lawslo.

Pat LOGSDON Associate A.D./SWA 32nd Season Nebraska (1989) A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon was promoted to senior woman administrator on March 7, 2008, in addition to her duties as associate athletic director for administration. She previously served in the role of assistant athletic director. Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office; oversight in the areas of administration, athletic medicine, nutrition, football operations, softball, women’s gymnastics and rifle; developing and implementing administrative policies and procedures, assisting with strategic planning, reviewing and maintaining game and coaching contracts and oversight of the administrative budget. Previously, Logsdon spent six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations. Logsdon served three years as assistant to the director of football operations and 14 seasons as the football recruiting secretary. Logsdon received a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1989.

Huskers Hope For Strong First Year in Big Ten The Big Red has moved to the Big Ten, and the Nebraska women’s golf team is planning to show some big benefits from experience in 2011-12. The Huskers, who were one of the most inexperienced teams in the Big 12 Conference last year with four first-year players in the lineup at times, return all but one starter from a year ago. Returning senior starters Madeleine Sheils, Kayla Knopik and Katie Keiser will lead a young and talented collection of seven freshmen and sophomores into Nebraska’s inaugural Big Ten campaign with plenty of reasons for optimism. Although the Huskers are still relatively young, Sheils and Knopik played in every round for the Huskers last season and have combined for 137 career collegiate rounds. Keiser added 26 rounds in her first year at NU in 2010-11. Nebraska’s three seniors have not only combined for 163 rounds as Huskers, but have also combined to make six appearances at conference tournaments. Compare that to the start of the 2010-11 campaign when the Husker roster featured lone senior Mary Kate Bird, who had competed in just 67 career rounds and one Big 12 Championship. “There is no doubt that we will be more experienced at the top of our roster this year compared to last year,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “I think that is really going to help us in all areas of our program.” Sheils, a three-year letterwinner from Boise, Idaho, brings a load of collegiate and national amateur experience to the top of the Husker lineup. She has played every round in the Husker lineup the past two seasons, posting a 76.34 stroke average during that span. Sheils owns four career top-10 finishes and eight top-25 showings, while owning Nebraska’s top returning stroke average from 2010-11. While battling for All-Big Ten honors on the course, the three-time NGCA Scholastic All-American will try to become just the fourth Husker in history to earn four Scholastic All-America awards, while also contending for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. “Maddie has been a tremendous leader both on and off the course during her career, and she had an outstanding summer to set the tone for our season,” Krapfl said. “We expect Maddie to have her best season as a Husker because she has put in the work to deserve it.” Knopik heads into her senior season at Nebraska after being a fixture in the lineup in 2010-11. Overall, Knopik has competed in 41 consecutive rounds in the Husker top five the past two years. A first-team academic All-Big 12 pick in 2011, Knopik has continued to shave strokes off her game each season and enters her fifth year after producing a 77.63 stroke average as a junior. “Kayla has developed into a very good college golfer by making major improvements in her time at Nebraska,” Krapfl said. “She is a great example of what hard work and a great attitude can do for your game. We hope she has a great senior season.” Keiser is the least experienced of Nebraska’s seniors, but she learned valuable lessons in her first year as a Husker in 2010-11. The Gothenburg, Neb., native produced a 79.77 stroke average on the season while playing 26 total rounds, including 17 in the Husker top five. “Katie worked hard to make some adjustments to her game throughout the year and those changes began to pay off for her as the season wore on,” Krapfl said. “We expect Katie to contend for lineup spots again this season.” In addition to three seniors with playing experience, the Huskers will also welcome back three true freshmen from the 2010-11 season who earned significant lineup time. Sophomore Steffi Neisen headlines the talented trio after competing in all 32 rounds for Nebraska last season. The New Prague, Minn., native produced the Huskers’ No. 3 stroke

Madeleine Sheils returns to the Nebraska lineup for the fourth season. The Boise, Idaho native has started 72 consecutive rounds in the Husker lineup entering her senior season. She is also shooting for her fourth appearance on the NGCA Scholastic All-America team.

average (77.13) on the year, which also ranked as the thirdbest stroke average by a freshman in school history. In the classroom, she was also an NGCA Scholastic All-American. With a year of collegiate experience and a strong summer under her belt, Neisen will be looking for even better results as a sophomore for the Huskers. “Steffi is a great student with outstanding character who has natural leadership qualities. She is a hard worker and cares about those around her,” Krapfl said. “She has a solid all-around game with outstanding fundamentals. She is also extremely competitive and will never give up.” While Neisen was a fixture in the Husker lineup as a freshman, Remylee Molyneux and Katelyn Wright also made multiple appearances in the NU top five. Molyneux played nine rounds in the Husker lineup at the end of the fall season, but was sidelined by injury early in the spring. She competed in 18 rounds on the year. Wright was regularly NU’s No. 6 golfer early in the year, but earned spring lineup spots at the BYU Entrada Classic and the Mountain View Collegiate. For the season, she posted an 80.08 stroke average over 25 rounds. “Katelyn and Remylee really gained some valuable experience last year,” Krapfl said. “We think they are going to see some pretty big jumps in their games this year to give us six experienced golfers heading into the year.” Along with added experience, the Husker roster will feature more depth in 2011-12 with the addition of four talented freshmen. Nebraska entered 2010-11 with just eight players on the roster, and Bird and Molyneux each missed significant portions of the season with injuries. “Last year, inexperience and lack of depth were two pretty big issues that we had to deal with all year,” Krapfl said. “We are still going to be pretty young this year, but we think we are going to be a much deeper team, which usually creates more competition in qualifying.” A pair of talented Nebraska natives will try to bolster the Huskers this season with the addition of Lincoln’s Jackie O’Doherty and Morgan Smejkal from Columbus. O’Doherty, a two-time Nebraska Class A state champion, was a three-time Class A all-state pick in golf. She was also a member of the 2011 Four State Team and the 2010 Nebraska

Junior Golf All-Star Team. She was also a competitive swimmer and posted better than a 4.0 GPA at Lincoln East. “Jacqueline is a perfect example of the type of athlete we love to recruit. She is a great student, hard working, and has a wonderful personality,” Krapfl said. “She has the length to really become an outstanding college player. She has a very good swing and her short game is developing into a dependable part of her game.” Smejkal was a two-time Class A all-state selection and produced a pair of top-five performances at the state tournament in her career. Smejkal was also a member of the Nebraska Junior Golf All-Star Team in 2009 and 2010, and she was a member of the Nebraska Four State Team in 2010 and 2011. She was also an outstanding basketball player who set Columbus High School’s three-point record. “Morgan is a great athlete who has the potential to become a great golfer,” Krapfl said. “We feel once she gets in our program where she can focus on one sport and learn from the coaches and players around her, that she is going to become a very good player. She has very good fundamentals and a strong work ethic.” One of the top high school golfers in the state of Arizona over the past four years and an experienced junior golfer at the national level, Shelby Martinek brings a decorated resume to Nebraska. The 2008 Arizona Class 5A-II state champion, Martinek was ranked as one of the top 175 players in the GolfWeek/Sagarin girls rankings as a senior at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe. “A lot of schools were recruiting Shelby, and we feel great about her choice to become a Husker,” Krapfl said. “She has an outstanding short game, works hard and has really developed into a player who can manage her game and shoot low numbers.” One of the top young golfers in California, Cassidy Stelzmiller brings loads of potential to Nebraska. At the junior level, Stelzmiller was one of the top 400 players in the GolfWeek/Sagarin girls ratings. “Cassidy not only has above-average length, she also possesses a great feel for the greens - a combination that is hard to find,” Krapfl said. “She is young for her class, so her potential to continue to develop and grow is outstanding. We feel she has the potential to be an All-America-type player.”

OUtlook (2011-12) Katie Keiser enters her second season at Nebraska after earning a part-time role in the Husker lineup as a junior in 2010-11. The Gothenburg, Neb., native produced a 79.77 stroke average on the season while playing 26 total rounds. Seventeen of those 26 rounds were played as a member of NU’s top five in six tournaments, including the Big 12 Championships. “Katie worked hard to make some adjustments to her game throughout the year and those changes began to pay off for her as the season wore on,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “We expect Katie to contend for lineup spots again this season as one of the more experienced players on a young team.” Junior (2010-11) Keiser helped Nebraska by making six appearances with 17 rounds inside the Husker lineup. She earned lineup spots at both the Baylor Spring Invitational and the Big 12 Championships to close her junior season, finishing in a tie for 54th (77-80-81-238) at the conference tournament in Columbia, Mo., April 22-24. Overall, Keiser played 26 total rounds on the season and produced NU’s fifth-best stroke average (79.77). Keiser earned a spot in the Nebraska lineup in the regularseason finale at the Baylor Spring Invitational, April 11-12. She opened the tournament with a 79, which counted toward NU’s team score. She closed the tournament with rounds of 85 and 84 to close at 248 in a tie for 78th in a 94-player field. Keiser’s performance in Texas followed on the heels of arguably the best tournament of her career when she produced a career-best 228 at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., March 25-26. Keiser’s effort in Arizona included a final-round 69, shattering her previous career-best round of 72. She tied for 57th while playing as an individual at Mountain View. Keiser played in NU’s top five at the season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational, finishing in a tie for 71st (79-83-162) at the rain-shortened event at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln. She traveled as an individual to the Marilynn Smith/ Sunflower Invitational and tied for 50th (81-85-81-247), before sitting out NU’s next two competitions of the fall (Johnie Imes Invitational, Dale McNamara Invitational). She closed the fall campaign on a high note by earning a lineup spot at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio. After an

opening-round 80, she scorched the Briggs Ranch Golf Course with a then-career-best, even-par 72 in the second round. She added a final-round 78 to finish with a then-career-best 230 in a tie for 38th. Keiser opened the spring in the NU lineup, tying for 93rd (83-76-81-240) at the 33-team Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. She made her fourth lineup appearance at the UNLV Spring Invitational where she tied for 63rd (84-77-77-238). She added a trip to the BYU Entrada Classic as an individual, where she finished in a tie for 51st (85-77-81-243). Keiser, who enrolled at Nebraska before the start of the fall semester in 2010, produced a solid summer on the course, capturing runner-up honors to former Husker JC Stevenson in the 2010 Nebraska Women’s Stroke Play. Current Husker teammate Kayla Knopik took fifth. Keiser also advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 Nebraska State Match Play, falling to eventual champion Susan Marchese. Keiser knocked out Knopik in the round of 16. Winthrop (2008-10) Keiser spent her first two collegiate seasons at Winthrop University, where she posted an 80 stroke average. High School/Amateur Before heading to Winthrop, Keiser captured the 2007 Nebraska Class C State High School championship as a junior at Gothenburg High School, helping the Swedes and Coach Jim Henke to a runner-up team finish. She also earned Class C All-State honors following her senior season in 2008. A four-time high school state qualifier, Keiser was also the runner-up at the 2008 Nebraska State Match Play Championships. Coach Robin Krapfl and the Huskers are counting on a healthy Molyneux to return and push for time in the Nebraska lineup as a sophomore in 2011-12. “Remy was playing pretty well and showing improvement throughout the fall, then her injury slowed her down during the spring,” Krapfl said. “She had a good summer and she is healthy, so we expect her to build off her experiences as a freshman and compete at a higher level for us this year.” Freshman (2010-11) Molyneux made an instant impact on Nebraska’s lineup during the 2010 fall season. She opened her collegiate career by tying for 29th with a 155 over two rounds at the rain-shortened Chip-N Club Invitational at Wildnerness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln. The New Prague, Minn., native competed in the Husker lineup in all 32 rounds as rookie and produced NU’s No. 3 stroke average (77.13) on the year. INAUGURAL BIG TEN CONFERENCE SEASON

18 | nebraska women’s golf | 2011-12

Young Huskers Lay Foundation for Future The Nebraska women’s golf team experienced some growing pains in 2010-11, but a young Husker roster half-filled with first-year players continued to improve throughout the season. “We were definitely playing our best golf down the stretch, and you could see our young players making adjustments and improvements on a daily basis,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “We put together some really strong rounds as a team late in the year, but our youth and inexperience tended to contribute to some inconsistency.” Nebraska’s final Big 12 Tournament appearance was probably the most telling example of Krapfl’s assessment of her 2010-11 Huskers. True freshman Steffi Neisen fired an even-par 72 to lead Nebraska to a tie for third after the first round with a solid 297. The Huskers were just three strokes back of Texas Tech and one shot behind Texas while sitting in a tie with the hosts from Missouri after one round at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia. Neisen continued to play well with a 74 in the second round, while NU’s lone senior, Mary Kate Bird, kept the Huskers in the hunt with a three-under-par 69 in the second round. The Huskers closed the second round with a 298 and headed to the final round in a tie for seventh at 595, just eight strokes out of a top-three tournament finish. Bird, Nebraska’s top player throughout the season, moved to the final round in a tie for second at one-underpar 143. Neisen, who posted one of the best seasons by a freshman in school history, joined Bird in the top 10 after two rounds at 146. Bird, Neisen and the rest of the Huskers struggled in the third round and closed the tournament with a finalround 314 to end the season in a tie for 10th at the Big 12 Championships. Bird just missed out on All-Big 12 honors by tying for 14th at 222, while Neisen settled for a tie for 28th at 226 in her first conference tournament appearance. “We started strong at the conference tournament, then left a lot of shots out on the course in the second round,” Krapfl said. “I think we let some of the shots we left on the course in the second round affect how we played in the third round and they snowballed on us. More experienced golfers learn to minimize those things.” Bird exemplified the benefits of experience throughout her senior year. The Kansas City, Mo., native produced the sixth-best stroke average in NU history (75.74) and finished among the top-30 individuals at each of her final seven tournaments. Her accomplishments came despite playing with pain to start the year and electing to have surgery that knocked her out of NU’s final three fall tournaments. Bird posted a season-best tie for 10th at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate to open the spring, after tying for 18th at her final fall tournament at the Marilynn Smith/ Sunflower Invite. She added a 19th-place showing with a season-best 220 at the UNLV Spring Invite, and contributed

Mary Kate Bird closed her Nebraska career with the sixth-best season stroke average in school history. She was also a three-time academic All-Big 12 selection and a two-time winner of Nebraska’s Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for her commitment to all aspects of NU’s award-winning Life Skills program.

a tie for 23rd at the Baylor Spring Invitational before her tie for 14th at the Big 12 Tournament. Bird added first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the second time in her career and claimed a Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for her extensive commitment to outreach work in the community. “Mary Kate was a tremendous leader for our team this year, and the example she set is going to have a positive impact on our current players for years to come,” Krapfl said. “She was an outstanding example of what we expect from a student-athlete at the University of Nebraska.” A four-year starter who battled injury and illness throughout her career, Bird finished with the No. 3 career stroke average (77.08) in school history. In addition to Bird’s senior leadership, junior Madeleine Sheils provided stability in the lineup. The Boise, Idaho, native played in every round in the NU lineup for the second straight season. Her 76.34 stroke average over 32 rounds ranked second on the team, and she produced four top-25 finishes on the year. The highlight of Sheils’ season came with a tie for third and a season-best 223 at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invite. She added a tie for 10th (229) at the BYU Entrada Classic, and tied for 15th (227) at the Dale McNamara Invite. She also established a career-best with a final-round 69 at the Mountain View Collegiate (226). Like Bird, Sheils was a leader in the classroom and the community for the Huskers as well. She claimed NGCA Scholastic All-America honors for the third straight season and first-team academic All-Big 12 accolades for the second straight year. She also Bird among Nebraska’s 2010-11 Nebraska Individual Stroke Averages joined 30 Student-Athlete HERO Golfer Strokes Rounds Average Leadership Award winners. Fellow junior Kayla Knopik also developed into a consisent scorer in her fourth season. The Papillion, Neb., native posted NU’s No. 4 stroke average with a 77.63. Knopik joined Sheils and Neisen in the top five for all 32 rounds in 2010-11, and posted 26 rounds of 79 or better. “Kayla has continued to improve every season at Nebraska, and her confidence is growing in her game,” Krapfl said. “She just keeps plugging away and brings a great attitude to the course each day.” Junior transfer Katie Keiser rounded out Nebraska’s top five late in the season and finished the year with a 79.77 stroke average. The Gothenburg, Neb., native fired a career-best 228 at the Mountain View Collegiate, including a career-best three-under-par 69 in the final round, which matched Sheils’ final round in Tucson, Ariz., for the best round by a Husker in 2010-11. “Katie’s hard work showed in her game late in the season, and we saw some good results and what she is capable of shooting,” Krapfl said. “We think she can make bigger strides for us in her second year in our program.” Neisen grabbed headlines for her performances throughout the year. Her 77.13 stroke average ranked third on the team and was the third-best average by a freshman in school history. Her season was highlighted by a tie for ninth with a 223 at the Dale McNamara Invitational, and included four other top-30 finishes on the year. Neisen also earned NGCA Scholastic All-America honors. “Steffi has a really bright future,” Krapfl said. “She is an extremely hard worker with a perfectionist attitude at everything she does.” Two more promising freshmen joined Neisen in making immediate impacts in 2010-11. Katelyn Wright and Remylee Molyneux both earned lineup spots during the season. Wright made spring lineup appearances at both BYU and Mountain View, while Molyneux claimed lineup spots at the Johnie Imes, Dale McNamara and Alamo invitationals to close the fall season. Molyneux suffered a wrist injury at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate to open the spring, which sidelined her for nearly all of the remaining season. “Katelyn and Remy showed some real promise, and they are only going to get better as they mature,” Krapfl said. “Our freshmen are going to provide us with a strong nucleus as we move forward in the Big Ten.”

NEBRASKA

ebraska continues to add to its impressive tradition of success in women’s golf. In 2008, the Huskers earned their 11th trip to the NCAA Regional Championships, just missing a bid to the 24-team NCAA Championships. The Huskers have finished among the top 24 teams in the nation three times in the past 12 seasons. In 2006, the Huskers posted the best NCAA Championship score in school history, while finishing 20th at the event. Entering her 25th season at the helm of the Nebraska women’s golf program, Coach Robin Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 28 tournament titles, 11 NCAA Regional appearances and all three of the school’s NCAA Tournament bids. Husker women’s golfers epitomize Nebraska’s commitment to success in athletics, academics and life. Husker golfers have captured a nationleading 59 NGCA Scholastic All-America honors and annually produce one of the top team grade-point averages at the University of Nebraska. The Husker women’s golf team is also one of NU’s most active teams in the community.

The 2006 Nebraska women’s golf team (main photo) enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history by finishing 20th at the NCAA Championships. Steph Ruiz (bottom left) matched the best four-round NCAA Tournament score in school history with a 301. Sarah Sasse (bottom middle) made history in 2003 when she earned first-team All-America honors for the Huskers. Sasse was also named the Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Year and led the 2003 Huskers (top right) to a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Sasse went on to be a competitor on the Golf Channel’s “Big Break III” in 2005. The 2000 Huskers (middle right) posted the best NCAA Championship finish in school history by taking 19th. Heidi Wall (bottom right) captured CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica honors for the Huskers in 1996. The Lincoln native helped NU to three straight NCAA Regional appearances from 1994 to 1996.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS The success of Nebraska student-athletes reaches far beyond athletic competition. More Husker student-athletes have been selected to CoSIDA Academic All-America teams (291) than any other school in the nation, and Nebraska has produced more NCAA Top Eight Award winners (16) than any other school. As it enters its first season of Big Ten Conference competition in 2011-12, Nebraska continues to set the standard for the approximately 1,400 NCAA member institutions. The Husker football team leads all individual sport programs in the nation with 99 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. The NU volleyball progam has captured more Academic All-America awards (36) than any other women’s team in the nation, while the Husker softball program ranks second on that list with 29 selections. Nebraska also ranks among the top 10 schools in the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in men’s and women’s track and field/cross country, baseball and women’s basketball.

Huskers Grow Academic Tradition in 2010-11

Husker student-athletes produced another stellar year at the University of Nebraska, continuing NU’s tradition of academic success. Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports to 291 with a Big 12 and Big Ten Conference-leading 14 honorees in 2010-11. Nebraska also set Big 12 records with 192 academic all-conference selections and 688 picks to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the year. Track and field All-Americans Nicholas Gordon and Natalie Willer led an impressive season for Coach Gary Pepin’s program. Gordon, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and the 2009 NCAA indoor long jump champion, All Sports as of August 2011 claimed Nebraska’s Male StudentAthlete-of-the-Year award. A twotime Big 12 long jump champion and a five-time All-American, the senior from Kingston, Jamaica, was a three-time first-team academic all-conference selection as a political science major. Willer, a three-time All-American and four-time Big 12 pole vault champion, added Female StudentAthlete-of-the-Year honors. Willer also joined Gordon as a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2011. The biological sciences major from Elkhorn, Neb., was one of three Huskers across all sports to earn prestigious $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, joining softball’s Julie Brechtel and rifle’s Ryann McGough. Willer also received a $7,500 Dr. Prentice Gautt Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship.

Gordon, Willer and fellow two-time track and field Academic All-American Bjorn Barrefors headlined an impressive class of 14 Husker Academic All-Americans in 2010-11. Barrefors, who earned first-team honors, joined Gordon, Adam Dailey, Tyler Hitchler and Nate Polacek on the men’s track and field/cross country Academic All-America team. The Husker men’s track and field program led all sports nationally in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2010-11, while tying the NU record for most Academic All-Americans in one season by a Husker program (1997 football). The women’s track and field team added Willer (first team) and Ashley Miller (second team) as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Safety Austin Cassidy earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors to become the 99th Husker football Academic All-American. Softball players Ashley Hagemann and Nikki Haget, who were also high school teammates, added CoSIDA Academic All-America honors of their own, along with wrestler Tucker Lane, soccer player Morgan Marlborough, rifle team member Ryann McGough and baseball player Casey Hauptman. The pitcher from Omaha who was a 26th round pick of the New York Mets in the 2011 MLB Draft became the 10th Husker baseball player since 2001 to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. He also earned a $7,500 Dr. Prentice Gautt Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship. Student-Athlete Orientation

Academic Counseling

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

Tutorial Support

Designed to enhance cultural awareness, staff members concentrate efforts on issues of transition, adjustment and retention. These support programs include Ladies First, International Night and Your Degree First. Your Degree First is a program designed to assist, motivate and promote minority student-athletes in pursuing the degree of their choice.

Study Hall

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Each student-athlete is required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. In addition, weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall may also be determined by the academic counselor.

Mentoring

Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

INAUGURAL BIG TEN CONFERENCE SEASON

The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

Personal Counseling

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

Computer Resources

Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with more than 50 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.
