A woman’s home has long been recognized as her sphere of power and influence. From their first appearance in Berlin in the late 1780s to their continuing presence in major US cities today, Jewish women’s salons served as welcoming havens where a diverse group of people could openly learn and exchange ideas about art, music, literature, politics, and religion. Meet 13 fascinating Jewish women whose tastes and philosophies influenced the leading art and political figures of their times.

What’s the point of living Jewishly? What ideas, beliefs, and practices are involved? This course examines a wide variety of Jewish sources to discover the deeper meanings underlying Jewish holidays, life–cycle observances, and practices.

Poetic License Adults February 6–May 22 Wednesdays, 10:45–11:45 am Instructor: Rabbi Michael Bernstein This course offers a fresh and fascinating examination of Israeli society. Through the pens of its leading writers, participants encounter an Israeli society that is original, contemporary, honest and proud. Reflections of the mythic Israel are matched by poetry and prose that is challenging and self–critical, and both offer profound insight into the Israeli national psyche.

The Book of Psalms Adults April 22–July 1 Mondays, 10:00–11:30 am The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta Instructor: Dr. Shelley Buxbaum The Book of Psalms has been a source of both solace and joy for countless readers over the millennia. The musicality of its powerful rhythms moves all readers in a manner in which no other biblical text manages to achieve. Today, as throughout the past, this book provides us with a means to express our innermost thoughts and feelings. This course will provide us an opportunity to explore a path to spiritual restoration and rejuvenation. Fee: Member/Non–Member $185 (includes materials)

Jesus for Jews: A Jewish Understanding Of the New Testament Adults February 6–May 22 Wednesdays, 10:45–11:45 am Instructor: Dr. Steven Chervin Have you read the New Testament? Why not?! Are you afraid that it’s anti–Semitic? Studying these texts can actually help Jews to appreciate their own identity more deeply. Most Jews and Christians would be surprised to learn just how thoroughly Jewish Jesus was, and how his Jewishness permeates the New Testament. We will learn about the intertwined histories of Judaism and Christianity, how the two religions came to a parting of the ways, why the Jews rejected Jesus, and how we can use our knowledge to strengthen interfaith relations.
