who is andra miyanka? A first child out of 3, she was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 9th of July, 1991. Always being the youngest in class, she started elementary school a year earlier than others, she then skipped last year of highschool and went straight on to college, and now she graduated her Advanced Diploma in Visual Communications by the age of 17. She is currently pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design at Raffles Design Institute, Singapore. Continuing further studies is in her future. Although her passion have been a lot about designing, she also has an interest in law. She is argumentative, she is not afraid of competition, and she thinks critically.
002
She was never the one who draws on the school tables. She is more of the one who finishes early in math and science assignments. But as time goes by, she began to get interested in graphics. It amazes her how they can influence people on how they think, what to believe, even sometimes what to do. She began to realize that everything around us is design. She wants to make an impact in the world. She thinks she can do that by being a designer. She’s a newborn in this industry. She still has a lot to learn. In this book, is a little sneak peek of works that she has done so far.

My personality, how I act, think, and feel as a designer, and most importantly, my inspirations are what this manifesto is all about. In this 21x21cm book, I tried to make it reflect me as a designer. My theme was to make it like an old journal, that’s why I used an old paper texture as the background. I went on using serif fonts to make it modern-looking and to add a little twist, I used different orientations and sizings on the typeface.

This manifesto was perfect bound. The cover was laminated to add dove texture to it. It is done in this way so it would be a book that is enjoyable and light to read, almost like a magazine, as they tend to have these characteristics as well.

how are shoes?
This is a publication that was done by me and my classmates, Giva, Ricky, Shierly and Trixie, as a group project. We called ourselves G-Star, which was also the name of our ‘publishing company’. I was appointed as the copywriter, although I contributed to other rhings in the book as well. I came up with the title ‘how are shoes?’. The book talks about everything that people need to know about shoes.

TOM DELONGE
“I got really heavily involved in wanting
to understand the workings of the world and wanting my band to change the world”
of Angels and Airwaves Tom and his personal life
Born December 13th 1975 with the name Thomas Matthew DeLonge, Jr, he is best known as the founder of bands Blink182, Box Car Racer, and Angels & Airwaves. Tom went to Rancho Bernardo High School and to a junior college for a few years. But he didn’t went to college. Being asked about this in an interview, he said that he sees himself as a humble student of the world and that he’s always keen about knowing how the world works. Today, Tom lives with his wife Jennifer DeLonge, along with daughter Ava Elizabeth, son Jonas Rocket, and a German Shepard named Grey in California. Tom is expecting He created his latest band with guitarist David Kennedy, drummer Atom Willard, and bassist Matt Wachter. He made the band’s logo which coincidentally was his daughter’s name. Tom once said that Ava was the muse of the band, because she was one of the reasons why he quit Blink-182. Expanding his career, Tom also started his own footwear label called Macbeth and a clothing label called Atticus.
Tom and his music
Right after Angel & Airwaves’ first album was released, Tom had an interview with Larry King. He was asked about how the world war 2 became an inspiration for his new album. Being in the studio with the blinds closed and the projector turned on showing pictures from the world war 2 was how he started writing his songs. Seeing pictures of the war, while writing love songs was what made his writing method unique. He believed that by combining his thoughts about love and war, he can create a whole new kind of music. Angels & Airwaves’ second album, I-Empire was released on CD on November 5th 2007. The band’s debut addressed infinite possibility in the human experience. Then, I-Empire furthers the topic, referencing the idea that the empire that one builds exists within oneself. “It’s a way of looking at the world, as the world is yours,” DeLonge says.
“If people are gonna give this record a chance, I ask that they find a hill that’s nearby, park their car, open the car doors, lay on the hood, blast the music at night and pretend that the city below is theirs”
magazine spread This is a magazine spread featuring Tom Delonge of Angels and Airwaves. The colors I picked for this spread was thought out thoroughly so that it suits the featured artist perfectly. In this case, orange and yellow were used because Angels and Airwaves often uses these colors.

history of graphic design
This A5-sized book is a timeline of the history of graphic design. Talking about graphic design goes way to the 1800s, so I decided to make it look like an old journal. Everything on the left page is a brief description of the time being and examples of design styles back then. Pages on the right are my original design adopting the styles in which years I was describing on the opposite page.

telefon tel aviv vinyl record Telefon Tel Aviv is a music group from New Orleans. Their music genre is ambient techno. Listening to their upbeat songs somehow reminded me of the disco. Their uplifting beats also made me think of an equalizer, how they go up and down to the music. I then used these elements into making Telefon Tel Aviv’s 9-inch vinyl record.

This was a group project done by me and two of my fellow classmates. This is an advertising campaign for the Museum of Modern Art. Our aim was to make teenagers want to come to the museum, as these days teens tend to see museums as a boring place to go. I came up with the tagline ‘Even the Masterpiece Goes to MoMa’. The humorous mood in the campaign makes it approachable to young people.

miyanka: typography
uniquely formal
This typography project was a group work. We combined 4 different typefaces to create a whole new typeface, in which we called Uniquely Formal. The 4 typefaces we used were Garamond (shown in red), Bodoni (shown in black), Clarendon (shown in yellow), and Baskerville (shown ini green). Different parts of the different typefaces were taken apart and put together into a new family font. Our goal in creating the font was to come up with a font that is not only usable for any purposes but that is also physically unique, which was why we came up with the name ‘Uniquely Formal’.
040
041
miyanka: typography
042
After the ‘Uniquely Formal’ family font was created, we made a 3D model of it. We first created a phrase which was ‘A Little Rebellious’. The letters were made out of blue foam. We then placed the letters on a background that would match the theme.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stencil, stencil is a template used to draw or paint identical letters, symbols, shapes, or patterns every time it is used. I divided this chapter into 4 sections based on the different types of stencil. Numbering stencils, stencils for government use, stencils for branding, and typefaces that are stencil look-alike.
CHAPTER 1. STENCILS.
1
2
Stencils are often used by organizations such as the military or the government. They can be used to label objects or to display warnings on the streets. These stencils are made to lower the cost of production as these stencils are usually made for large number of objects.
These are examples of numbering stencils that are being used on hydrants and streets. It’s important to have coding on these objects or places to clearly identify its source. The color of these kind of stencils are usually made highly contrasted to the color of the object it’s being placed on.
3
4
044
Similar to stencils for government use, stencils for branding are used to label objects that belongs to them. Simple, they are made so that it won’t get stolen or people won’t claim those objects as theirs. Most of the time, not only fonts are used in this kind of stencil, but also the brand’s logo.
Similar to numbering stencils, stencils for government use are usually used to label objects that belongs to them such as dry risers, electricity boxes, and many more. They’re also used for warnings. They use stencils basically because they are easy to make and cost effective. These stencils are usually not highly detailed.
5
7
Other purpose of this kind of stencil is also to identify places, like the one that says Lock Smith. The place offer services that has to do with keys. That’s why they placed a picture of a lock as the background to compliment the stencil of the name Lock Smith. This kind of branding stencil is more well-thought than the ones that are put on street objects, like the one shown above sayng Samwoh.
Stencils used in labelling government’s objects are usually made with not much consideration in terms of colorings, although they still make them fairly clear. As of the size of the typefaces, they’re made to fit the object that’s being labelled. The shape of the typefaces are about the same. They have a typical rigid look.
6
8
Mango uses a typeface that resembles a stencil. They chose white color to put on top of a black background. Uppercase letters are used to spell Mango. Like most stencils usually look, Mango’s typeface has sharp and well defined edges.
9
Stenciled letters usually have this same look, which is the separations between lines. This signature look is somehow unique and interesting. People nowadays don’t only use stencils as the way they’re supposed to be used, made on paper, cutted out, and sprayed or painted to print out the shape. Instead, they purposedly make fonts looking like stenciled fonts.
For their sale season, Topshop introduced a new concept to their decorations. One of them is to the typeface they used. On one of their decorations, a stencil look-alike font is used. They are sans serif, but they have the look of a stencil which is the separation between lines, which in this case is ocated in the middle of every letter.
STENCIL LOOK-ALIKES
10
Every musician in the world, whether it’s a band or a soloist, has to have something unique so that they can be recognized by people all around the world, of course, other than their music. One of them is the logo. Their logo usually spells out their names clearly, which means they uses typefaces. These typefaces aare chosen to match the personality of the musician.
CHAPTER 2. MUSICIANS.
11
12
As these type of music sounds contemporary, the logo and typeface they used are mostly modern or even futuristic looking. Steve Mac and Paul Johnson are DJs that focuses on electronica music. They performs in exclusive bars and clubs, therefore typefaces they used are clean and simple to achieve the look and feel of modernism.
Goldfrapp and Felix Da Housecat chose typefaces that are fairly clean and simple. Goldfrapp’s typeface is in italic style which makes it look more sophisticated. As for Felix Da Housecat, the typeface are simple with white color and bold black outlines. Ewan Pearson named his album Piece Work, which is a compilation album. He sort of chose a typeface that relates to the concept of his album. The design was like a patchwork and the letters of his name are cropped according to the shapes
House and electronica is a genre that has a wide range of contemporary music. These kind of music are usually played for casual dancing or even just for foreground listening. They’re often played in cafes and bars.
Daft punk is more of a band that’s youthful. Their album is widely known all around the word and they’re sold in big music stores. That’s why they used a typeface that’s more young looking. The typeface looks like a rough handwriting and it has metallic colors to make it still looking modern.
13
14
This sub-chapter is categorized as others because it consists of few different genres. Bob Sinclar is a reggae musician. As he calls his latest album ‘Soundz of freedom‘, he tries to match the typeface he used to what it’s called. The typeface is colorful and it doesn’t have a definite shape. It looks sort of hand-written and almost looking like a child’s handwriting. This sends out the message of freedom that Bob Sinclar’s trying to make.
045
These 4 bands are known as bands that is new to the music industry. Therefore as a new band, they want to be recognize instantly. Thats why the typeface they chose is clear, so it is easy to read. The Starting Line target young generation, so the typeface they use must look modern. That’s why they use a sans serif font that has bold straight forward lines.
Above is the soundtrack album of the award winner movie ‘Juno’. It’s a movie that tells a story about the lives of teenagers these days. In order to attract teenagers to watch the movie and listen to the music, the whole look must be appealing to them. The typeface they chose is a grungy-looking hand-writing. The color is shocking green which adds a more youthful-look to the whole theme.

typography book
Typography are here, there, everywhere around us. This project was to pick different themes to work on, travel around Singapore to search for interesting types, and finally analyze them. Analyzing the types from basic things like their sizing, shapes, and colors, to going even deeper by analyzing how the characteristics of each type affects the feelings of people who sees it. I had two different backgrounds used through out the book, both revolving around the same theme. The pictures I took were ‘hung’ onto the wires that goes through out the brown colored pages and others were ‘pasted’ like polaroids onto a notebook. The book is in a landscape A5 format.

This was initially a web design project, done to practice my dreamweaver skills. I designed this HTML-based website to showcase some of my artworks. I personally love puzzles, which is why I thought of having ‘puzzles’ as the theme to my website. Puzzles tickles my sense of curiosity. That is how I want people to see myself as a designer. I want them to be curious of my design and I hope they will be looking forward to seeing more of what I can do. Fortunately, this site is already up and running. sweet home cafe This was a group project on identity system. We designed a brand new cafe. Starting from, of course, their logo, to the waitress’ uniforms. We also compiled a corporate guideline book which shows details on how the logo of the cafe should be applied, and many more. Not only we have to design, but we also have to be able to produce the real thing. The place in which the cafe is located was also chosen carefully, considering the our target audience.

AM ligature This ligature design was made based on my name. Every element in the ligature has its own meaning. The color orange and brown represents my personality being not too feminine, yet not that boyish too. The line strokes crossing through the letters means that I have a strong stand point. I know that this path I’m on now is leading to success.

This A2-sized poster is for a global warming advertising campaign. The design was inspired by Stefan Sagmeister, one of the world’s greatest designers, which happens to be my greatest inspiration. In this poster, I concentrated in the tagline that I was going to use. I assumed that a catchy line would appeal more to people that sees it. In the end, I came up with the tagline ‘Global Warming, The problem is the way that we are thinking. Burn fat, not fuel!’.
