Tsunami Summer in Sharm

SPOTLIGHT Seasonal Sweetness at Marriott Bakery Guests of the Sharm El Sheikh Marriott Resort can indulge in any number of ways, from lounging by the pool, to splashing in the sea. But the hotel’s sweetest temptation may just be its most literal, because the Marriott Bakery, with its fresh, seasonally-inspired treats, is creating its own confectionary culture that’s proving downright irresistible. Its cake-of-themonth, for example, combines the joie-de-vivre of pastries with the foodie trend of seasonality. (May’s flavor is mouthwatering Kiwi and Date Tart, for instance.) Guests can take their treats to go or relax over Illy espressos and cappuccinos inside the charming, sunlit bakery or out on the patio. Complimentary Wi-Fi is even available for those who like to stay connected (and upload Instagram shots) while tucking into tarts and cakes. Quality confections and the relaxed ambiance have earned

Marriott Bakery a reputation for unbeatable quality befitting its 5-star status. So why not pop in for a cake, pastry or sandwich and give your taste buds a treat. Marriott Bakery is open from 8am – midnight 7 days a week.

SPOTLIGHT New Ferry Service

Air Arabia announce new route Air Arabia Jordan, part-owned by Dubai-listed Air Arabia, will launch operations from its Amman base on 18th May 18, the company announced on Wednesday. Air Arabia, which bought a 49 percent stake in Petra Airlines in January, has rebranded the airline as Air Arabia Jordan and assumed management control. The carrier’s maiden flight will be to Kuwait City, with regular services to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Erbil in Iraq and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt also starting that week. Further routes will follow this year as the airline serves Europe, the Middle East and North Africa making it yet another option for connecting to Europe.

The Red Sea Ports Authority announced that a new ferry line will start in one month to connect Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada. The planned regular timetable of departures between the two resorts will serve tourism in the two popular resorts and provide more job opportunities. Currently travellers must either fly which is costly or drive which adds up to 10 hours to the trip. The ferry will offer an affordable and fast solution to connecting both resort towns.

Show your support for our Editor Moira Tune and Jilly Healy from Ocean College who on the 29th May will be attempting to cycle from one end of Sharm to the other; Ras Mohamed National Park to Nabq National Park to raise money for Carrol Flowers chosen cancer charity. Carrol Flowers is a long time Sharmer, who is well known and loved and adored by many residents and tourists. She is currently in the UK fighting her fight against cancer. As a true community member we decided to support her in her uphill struggle and fight with her by backing her up and biking. It may not seem that far, but both Jilly and Moira haven’t been cycling for long and from park to park the route takes them through the desert. A Virgin Money Giving fundraiser page has been set up for the charity Brains Trust in Carrol’s name http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiserweb/fundraiser/displaySomeoneSpecialPage. action?pageUrl=jillyandmoira and the event details can be found on Facebook https://www.facebook. com/events/928676083840186/ After the ride the girls will relax a little and then continue the fundraiser with a party at the Half Crown Rocks home to the famous Friday night BBQ. SharmCycle the power behind the pedal SharmCycle was honored to be appointed by the South Sinai Governor Khaled Fouda as the official body to collaborate with General Mahmoud Solia, Sharm El Sheikh City Council in preparing for the official opening of first designated cycle path in the city. The cycle path has been a long project supported by SharmCycle which was set up in 2014 by Ehab Elsayed as the leading initiative in promoting Green Tourism. The group has been working tirelessly to gather support for cycling for a ‘greener’ Sharm and also encouraging many Sharm residents to take up cycling by organizing many events. Governor Fouda accompanied by former Governors of South Sinai and key public figures officially cut the ribbon, while Ehab Elsayed blew the starting whistle for the SharmCycle team to take off on their bicycles decorated with several countries’ flags heading towards Naama Bay. In a statement to Mix Magazine, Ehab Elsayed said that cycling in Sharm El Sheikh is growing fast thanks to the dedication of his teams 1200 members, and the determination to convert Sharm El Sheikh into a Green City by recognizing bicycles as a major commuting method. SharmCycle has been and remains self-funded and financed by Ehab Elsayed, who invested over 500,000 L.E so far and plans to invest even more by increasing the groups owned bicycle fleet from 50 bicycles to over 400 bicycles by end of 2015, which are made available for free to tourists to cruise Naama Bay and help promote his initiative. ACTIVITIES

Tsunami Summer in Sharm

By Moira Tune & Jonas Mergl Photography by Yousef Mergl

Summer is here and what better way to spend the day than mooching along a lazy river; relaxing and reclining whilst your boat is propelled downstream by the gentle flowing water. For some that may sound idyllic but for the teenage generation ‘booooorrrrring’; so what better way to spend the day than racing down the rapids of a fast running stream, getting sucked into a whirlpool or plunging head first into fast moving water off the edge of cliff. Whatever your preference, the question seems irrelevant; Sharm doesn’t have any lazy rivers or fast and furious rapids and normally both scenarios don’t go hand in hand, now that is where you are wrong. Our dysfunctional family set off to prove that one poker faced ‘nothing fazes me’ teenage boy, one ‘I want to try everything’ happy go lucky boy, an ‘I don’t want to get in 10

the water’ Father and an ‘I’m not sure I want to do this’ me can have a fun day out, doing all of the above. Yes that’s right we set off to the Sea Club Aqua Park in Nabq for a fun filled day. After checking in at reception and getting our ‘all inclusive’ wrist bands and towel cards we were politely pointed in the direction of the park. The aqua park area is set in the resort, surrounded by the hotel rooms and facilities, in well maintained landscaped gardens. The facilities are set out all on one level; with plenty of chaise lounge and sun shades. There is a large children’s area where parents can keep watch whilst the little ones paddle in ankle deep water, a wave pool, lazy river and the main attraction the colourful slide tower which looms down on you like a giant octopus with multi-coloured limbs. My journalist assistant (aged 12) quickly persuaded me to

strip down to my swimwear and start the climb up the tower for the first foray into the rushing rapids, whilst my official photographer waited in anticipation to snap us in action as we got spat out at the other end. Meanwhile Father stayed poolside, safely clothed, watching with a small smirk on his face. As Jonas explains “Once you are ready to go down slides you normally would like to start with the easy ones before going on the really big and scary ones , you get a single or a double inflatable rubber doughnut – looking raft and start climbing up the colorful stairs which feels like nothing when you have a friend to talk to on the way up, once you make it to the top, you pick which slide you would like to go down and then a life guard comes and makes sure you go down safely and end up in the swimming pool.”

MIX May 2015

On Jonas’s advice, we did start with what could be perceived as the easier slide and we did thankfully end up in the swimming pool. We also decided to use the double doughnut, which was just as well as I screamed all the way down. Going solo was not an option for me at this early stage. Yousef (Photographer) then directed our team which included another young friend (Zane aged almost 9) to try the other rides whilst he ‘straight faced and serious’ waited to capture our rapture. My deal to stay in the double doughnut was swiftly changed to solo riding, as Zane seriously declared ‘he wasn’t ready to die yet’ and would stay safe in the double with Jonas. Little did I know that the dark and fast ride and the whirlpool backwards ride would pale into insignificance, once Zane got a taste for it and realized you do actually end up in the swimming pool every time. Meanwhile I decided to take a

MIX May 2015

break and convince ‘I don’t want to get in the water’ Father to go for a relaxed ride around the lazy river. With his phone in his pocket we picked up our boat and gently cruised the blue. There were no rapids, no splashes of water, just smooth sailing whilst catching some sun rays. Little did I know that my trusted colleague Jonas would be plotting my next hair raising ride. “When you get to the “scariest” slide AKA the ‘Tsunami’ you can speak to the life guard and tell him how you would like to go down, personally I like going in backwards and screaming my head off while doing it, you can also try going forwards or spinning, there is normally always one of your siblings or parents waiting for you at the bottom with a camera to film your priceless

reaction. The first time you go down, it seems scary but then you’ll always go again due to its addictive feeling on the way down.” Needless to say I did the ‘Tsunami’ once and only once, going forwards in a double doughnut and yes screaming my head off much to everyone’s amusement. Jonas and Zane (who now was death defiant) catapulted themselves down backwards, forwards, spinning single and double numerous times. Even Yousef decided to give it ago and looked like it was a walk in the park. Obviously it’s just not cool to scream when you are the coolest kid on the block.

ACTIVITIES “Once you have ridden all the slides and feel exhausted, you can go and get a drink and maybe a snack, have a seat and take a break. If you would like to ride slides again after your little break you can go for another round and ride as many slides as you like.” On Jonas’s advice I enjoyed some of the all inclusive refreshments and relaxed a little on the comfortable chaise lounge. Father was happy chillaxing as well, enjoying the allinclusive beverages. The kids didn’t need to continually ask for things as the day entrance includes refreshments. The café/bars even have little steps for kids to get eye-level with the bar staff when ordering. Apart from the soft drinks available the kids also enjoyed delicious milkshakes – just the thing to replenish their energy, ready for the next round. There is so much to do and something to suit everyone and various ages. Just before lunch we were invited to join the aqua aerobics by the animation team, we dipped in the wave pool and had a game of giant chess and then tucked into a plentiful lunch of burgers, pizza, hot dogs and chips. Everyone really enjoyed the Sea Club Aqua Park experience, whether it’s to relax,

12

run wild or cruise, you know everyone is in safe hands. As Jonas said “Sea club Aqua Park is one of the best water parks, whether you want to go by yourself or with a friend, once you enter, you can instantly feel the warm breeze as it contacts with your body, you can see children and adults having fun going down dozens of slides with that giant smile on their faces.” Sea Club Aqua Park is open 7 days a week. There are various day passes available with different all-inclusive offers. The staff are very friendly, helpful and professional and the grounds are well maintained and clean. Aqua Park is a great family outting and it’s just so nice to escape the down-town heat of the bay and get up to Nabq for the day.

Parmizzano Pleasures

If you are down town in Naama Bay and fancy a touch of fine Italian food then take a stroll along the promenade and pop into Parmizzano’s on the sea front of the Marriott Beach Resort. Executive Chef Amgad and his team of talented chefs will be waiting to whip up a magical meal of the finest Italian tastes from simple salads to mouthwatering mains. The restaurant is situated alongside the beach promenade with a choice of indoor air conditioned dining or outside terrace seating. As the weather hasn’t quite hit the heady highs of summer, we decided to sit on the terrace. The tables are nicely spaced and dressed with traditional red and white checked table clothes, crisp white napkins, soft lighting and a very cute planted pot of baby basil. Our waiter gave us the menus and explained about the Italian imported wine on offer and the daily specials which included freshly caught Sea Bass. As there were so many delicious options on the menu, we decided to choose some classic Italian from there. We couldn’t quite decide so we opted for a classic Beef Carpaccio and Fritto Misto to share. While we took in the ambiance of the promenade our waiter served us wine and also a basket of freshly baked on the premises rustic Italian bread with mixed olive tapenade and roast pepper marmalade. He then tableside mixed house made rosemary infused virgin olive oil with balsamic vinegar and freshly grated parmesan cheese for us to 18

dip chunks of bread into. The combination of flavours was amazing and extremely moorish. With a nice relaxed wait we were then served the antipasta. The Beef Carpaccio was one of the best I have tried and seasoned to perfection with a delicate scattering of finely chopped tomatoes and herbs. The thin cold slices of prime beef were a perfect partner and contrast to the juicy tender pieces of calamari and jumbo shrimp in the Fritto Misto which came with a spicy tomato sauce. For the main we chose the classic Osso Buco served on a bed of Milanese Risotto and Branzino; Sea Bass fillets served on wilted fennel with tomatoes and black olives. Both dishes were excellent and presented beautifully. The veal was cooked to perfection and was fall off the bone tender. The delicate Sea Bass paired amazingly well with the fennel with an excellent balance of tanginess from the olives. The presentation is five star but at Parmizzano’s that doesn’t mean tiny portions, we were happily full after the mains. After a little break our attentive waiter convinced us to share a dessert so we choose the orange scented crème caramel and for good measure our waiter added some ice cream. Parmizzano’s is a perfect place to relax and enjoy fine Italian dining within a relaxed semi-casual atmosphere, so next time you are down town pop in to Parmizzano’s for a tastebud treat. NIGHT LIFE

Hot Summer Nights with the best beats in town

By Tina Roume

Summer is here in Sharm, which for many tourists seems slightly strange as it’s kind of summer all year around, but for us residents we definitely get that buzz when the heat hits the highs and we declare summer is here. It’s the summer spirit, the holiday vibe where girls want to dress up in heels and sip cool cocktails and boys just want to have fun. 26

So where is the place to go to look cool and stay cool with the latest mixes hot off the decks from the White Isle? It’s got to be Little Buddha the sister venue of Buddha Bar Paris, where DJs TopAlex and K-FunK are mixing with the town’s movers and shakers.

know Little Buddha has one of the most creative fusion menus in town; a little Sushi before a shimmy, or some Teppanyaki before you get your toes tapping, or maybe just a marvelously mixed Martini? Whatever you decide just make sure you are on the floor at 11.30pm when the lights dim down and Whether you decide to dine be- the sounds start to spin. fore dancing is up to you as we MIX May 2015

Little Buddha has one of the best cocktail menus on the scene with a whole range of Martinis, long drinks and shots expertly shaken by the resident Mixologist and bar tenders. Unlike other venues the bar sweeps in a huge arc along the back wall making it a central feature and a place to hang out – there is room for everyone and it creates a friendly vibe. If you want to chill out and lounge a little why not book a VIP table? The area is behind the main bar which is the perfect place for people watching but still you are part of the party and seen in the scene. The sounds TopAlex and K-FunK are spinning are the latest of genres of house music. The party starts off with some classic Buddha beats but then works its way up into a fantastic frenzy with the skillful mixing of Deep House and EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Little Buddha isn’t a chill out zone no more; it’s a dance dream with vibes keeping you alive until the early hours. So let’s break out the heels, dress up a little and feel the heat of the summer with some of the best beats in town. It’s party time.

Three peak Egypt Challenge By Moira Tune

In the last few months I’ve noticed a growing phenomenon in Sharm; people are doing things, getting active, enjoying the great outdoors and generally getting fit. Sinai seems to becoming the next destination for extreme sport challenges. We’ve hosted the Paris-Dakar, we’ve witnessed the deepest SCUBA dive and now we’ve got the ultimate endurance challenge, namely the ‘Three peaks Egypt Challenge’.

international hikers ‘whose aim is to develop a worldclass mountain route that showcases the best of Egypt’s beautiful wilderness’. St. Katherine’s protectorate and community are cleverly re-inventing themselves by putting the region’s rugged remote peaks on the map of adventure challenges with the aim to create a sustainable economy that helps mountain communities and preserves traditional knowledge and lifestyles.

This is the brain-child of a group of St. Katherine’s local Bedouin, Egyptian and

It seems way out there, as most people would re-coil in fear if they were asked to

38

climb Sinai’s three highest peaks and cover 38km of rugged landscape all within 24 hours – but for two Sharm residents it was like a red rag to a bull. On the 11th April at 5.00am Waleed Ali and Ezzat Draz set off to prove it’s doable. When they arrived Ben Hoffler one of the organizers suggested that they set a record, to show others that to complete the challenge in 24 hours is a reachable goal for most people – in order to prove this, our Sharmers decided to do it in 12 hours 52 minutes beating the previous record held by an Austrian Mountaineer of 16 hours. MIX May 2015

I sat and had a chat with Waleed to see what makes him tick and how he felt about the challenge. Firstly it is normal to assume that you need to be super fit to even contemplate this kind of endurance but it really doesn’t take a lot of time to improve fitness levels, and Waleed is proof of this. Waleed has worked in the tourist industry in Sharm for almost 18 years; he started getting fit when he joined the Sharm Shark’s Rugby club in 2012– at the time most of the members joked that they were all too old with the average age being 35. When the Shark’s had a small break in training in 2013, Waleed started ‘Sharm Runners’ a facebook group to encourage people to run by organizing group runs. The group had 6-7 regular runners and over 100 members on facebook. Waleed started with 5km runs but as he regularly trained saw a quick improvement which resulted in a 21km run from Naama to Nabq. He then joined the International Half Marathon in Ras Mohamed National Park where in came in 13th out of 80 runners and is also a regular at the annual fundraising ‘Pink run’ at Rixos resort. With this kind of mentality it is no surprise that Waleed and his friend Azzat (a gymnastics coach for Waleed’s daughter) decided to take up Ben’s record busting challenge. Although it was a major feat for the pair; Waleed is quick to point out that by accomplishing it within 12.52 just highlights that for the average fitness person it is highly achievable in 24 hours and the feeling of accomplishing it should encourage others to try it. Adventure Tourists travel to the very south of New Zealand to do the highest bungee jump, travel to Morocco to do ‘Marathon des Sables’, sign up to do base camp Everest, so why not put another tick to a box and do the ‘Three peak Egypt Challenge’ – it’s a must do for any adrenalin junkie. So before you sign up what exactly is the challenge? The organizations website states ‘The THREE PEAKS EGYPT CHALLENGE is a new, community-founded hiking challenge in the Sinai. Stretching 38km, and tackling three of Egypt’s biggest, most iconic mountain peaks, the main aim of the challenge is to finish in 24 hours. This is the first Three Peaks Challenge in the Middle East and Egypt’s ultimate mountain hike. It’s a route that will push you to the max – and your personal peak – all the way.’ For most keen fitness people this will immediately ‘peak’ some interest so what where the highs and lows for our super Sharmers? LIVING

Waleed said the biggest problem was there was 100% humidity with 1°c temperature which meant they had a lot of moisture on their bodies which felt freezing with the low temperature. They kept an average pace with the help of the mobile app Endomondo which tracks the route, average pace, accent and descents. Ben accompanied them on the complete route as did the un-sung heroes the two Bedouin guides who shared the route between them. The first peak was 2383 metres above sea-level Jebel Abbas Basha, followed by Jebel Katherine – 2637 metres above sea-level and finally Jebel Musa 2285 metres above sealevel. The hardest part was the last 300 metres of Jebel Katherine. Waleed said he could not have done it without the encouragement of his team mate Ezzat. Their moods also followed the highs and lows of the terrain, with almost silent accents turning into cheerful chats on the descents. What was the most amazing thing of all is the absolutely awesome scenery – “you literally feel on top of the world”. Incredibly this was the first time Waleed and Ezzat had ever climbed a mountain, the only accent before was the little MFO mountain opposite

40

South Camp – but this fades away to a mere ‘hill’ in comparison to these mighty mountains. To sum up the experience; I asked Waleed if he would do it again. Surprise surprise he said “Yes” but next time he wants to take it at a slower pace so he can appreciate the grandeur of the Sinai desert and what an amazing place we live in. Finally I asked “any regrets?” the answer “I wish I did it earlier” and his advice to others is “Everybody, don’t waste time and go and see this beautiful place.” If you would like more information on this incredible initiative then the organization has a very informative website http:// www.threepeaksegypt.org/ packed full of information, tips, maps and preparation guides. They also have a facebook page https://www. facebook.com/threepeaksegyptchallenge?fre f=ts If you are considering taking this awesome challenge and becoming a ‘3 Peaker’ then the next scheduled trip will be in May. I’m tempted how about you?
